Through seven NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races, Tommy Baldwin Racing leads by 22 points in the owners championship standings, as the series hits the halfway point of the season in their next event. We certainly didn’t have the car with the same forward drive we had in May, and that’s just a product of a couple of small adjustments that we maybe needed to make, and the track being a little bit different with how they prep the surface.” Doug Coby will return to the track at Seekonk Speedway with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series on Wednesday, June 29. MAINE MERCURY CAPRI By ROB MAY and SHAWN SULLIVAN Always listen to your boss. Lou Cicerone said find more Mercury Capri owners to feature. In Standish, Maine, we find this fantastic 1985 Mercury Capri owned by Shawn Sullivan. Shawn’s oldest son, Jack, was starting to get into cars. They wanted to get something they could work on together. This Capri was the perfect platform. Shawn was 14 when he fell in love with the Mercury Capris. “I was an apprentice at Ronnie’s Truck service in Winchester NH in my 8th grade school year. There was a gentleman who worked there who had a green 1986 Capri with T- tops 5.0l with 5-speed. How I wanted a car like that I would often say. My grandparents always proclaimed, ‘you definitely don’t need that’.”

To start the car owning journey, his first car was a four-door 1976 Buick LeSabre powered by 4-bbl 350 with automatic transmission. “I was 16 years old, and my uncle, George Butler, showed me to flip the air cleaner lid to get a little more power out of the Buick. Same as any other kid, I fell in love with the noise that quadra jet made.” Sadly, 6 months in, the motor blew up. He waited through the winter of 1995 to buy another vehicle. While Shawn found a 1986 Mustang GT for sale, he turned it down because that Ford was in awesome shape, and he didn’t want to drive it in the NH winters. He settled for a 1985 Monte Carlo SS. This was followed by multiple T-Birds and another Monte Carlo. “Just before I bought my house, I sold all my cars. Life and bills got in the way; therefore, I sold off my toys to get serious about life.” For the last 20 years, Shawn had been without a hot car as he likes to say. “Back in 2018, I was looking at Facebook Marketplace, and I saw a post for the Capri I have now.” The Canyon Red caught his eye. It wasn’t an ‘86 with the fuel injection; instead, it was a 302 carbureted car with T 5 5 speed and 3.42 rear gears. Shawn thought “I’d love to own that.” However, before he could get in touch with the owner, the ad was gone. The $10000 asking price with 155000 miles would have been a bit high. “Even if the car was as nice as it looked in the ad, I thought ‘nope, too much money for an 85.” He had the chance but waited too long to pull the trigger. “I kept looking for the ad to pop back up in the summers of 2019 and 2020, but it never did. Instead, he found a 1985 Mustang GT. “The price was right. It needed paint, but the car had zero rot on it. So, I purchased that drove it for the summer.”

In March of 2022, strangely enough, the Capri ad popped back up on Marketplace for $8250. “I wasted no time, messaged the owner, and asked bottom dollar?” The first response was $7500. “I responded with $6500 cash today. He said, ‘ok meet me at the storage container I keep it in at Scarborough Maine.’ Upon arrival, there was 4 inches of mud the whole way to the container. After introducing myself, we opened the container.” There was barely enough room to open the door and start the car. “The Capri fires up, and the howl of vortex mufflers is music to my ears along with the lope in idle due to the aftermarket camshaft. I looked the car over best I can and see that it had a 3-point Kenny Brown strut tower brace, factory dual snorkel air cleaner, and adjustable rear bar tying the rear lower shock mounts together along with subframe connectors. I thought ‘well they definitely want this thing to handle.’ Also note, someone optioned the rear seat delete. Plus, the 17” Ansen slotted mags looked pretty badass along with the sunroof. We talked for a couple hours about everything under the sun. This was a gamble as I’ve never bought a car without driving it, but something told me that this was a lucky find that wasn’t too good to be true.” Shawn looked at the previous owner’s registration, and he had only driven about 270 miles the previous summer. “We filled out the bill of sale exchanged cash and away I went.” A week later, Shawn went back to pick up his car. “We had to trailer it out of the unit. My friend ,Justin Villacci, the co-owner of Wheels and Deals in Windham Maine, helped me get the car to the road. He does the work that I’m not equipped to do on my own on all my vehicles. We get the car on the dry ground, I pop the hood to do a full inspection. To my surprise it has a MSD 6 AL ignition system, aluminum Edelbrock performer heads, and Edelbrock aluminum intake. We thought ‘wow this is a score.’ So I drove it home, called my brother, and sold him my Mustang GT that day.” The Mercury is in terrific shape inside and out. Paint is a couple years old, but it still looks good. “I have plans to tint the windows and purchase a rear color matching seat.” Shawn drives the Capri pretty much only on sunny days. “The car is awesome to drive. It handles well, and it can get down and boogie. It definitely gets looks and thumbs up everywhere along with rubbernecking from anyone who is into cars. The most unique thing is it is a sunroof car, and it still has the bubble hatch. A lot of people swapped the hatches for a mustang rear hatch. The plan is to go to New England Dragway this summer to see how it performs. Next summer, Shawn wants to do the Bonney Eagle car show in Standish Maine as well as the Ford Nationals in Carlisle Pennsylvania next year. CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

BACK TO BACK TO BACK JACK Jack Sandahl wins seven straight and keeps on counting ED YESSAIAN Photos By PRIMETIME VIDEO AND PHOTO I have always stressed the importance of getting the next generation involved in drag racing, which in turn, will keep our track alive for many years to come. The current roster of youngsters seems to have no problem taking over the Winner’s Circle, with quite a few recent track championships belonging to the up-and-coming stars. One particular track Championship in the works is happening in Outlaw 10.50, as Jack Sandahl has been on an absolute tear, with 6 straight Super Street wins and a win at the Steve Reis Race last year to make seven straight victories. No surprise here though, as Jack is the son of Outlaw Legend Jon Sandahl. According to Jon, Jack has been going to the track since he was 2 years old and has only missed a handful of races since that time. He has also been involved in the building and maintenance of quite a few well-known cars in the area, as Jon is the owner of Tube Chassis Designz (www.tubechassisdesignz.com). Jack starting helping as a Continued Next Page 16| Motorhead Magazine - July 2022

K

crew member for the Sartori Pro Mod at age 14 then eventually took his first trip down the track in his sister’s car. Just one week later he piloted Jon’s famous orange Nova down the track to a 9.40 @ 145 elapsed time. It was at that point that Jon knew he had to head to shop and put something together because his boy was hooked! Jack’s weapon of choice would be a 1969 Mustang with quite a history to it. The car was originally built for Jim Sartori, who later sold it to another very famous Outlaw family, the Sanfords. Michelle Sanford would drive the car for two seasons before she inherited her Dad’s iconic 1964 Nova. The Mustang would briefly return to the Sartori camp but Jon knew it was the perfect car for Jack and brought it home. The car started with a 452 cubic inch engine that was force-fed by a Procharger. It was incredibly reliable and consistent. Eventually the blower would come off and an Applied Nitrous setup and Holley EFI would join

the party. This made the car even more consistent and I can definitely attest to Jack’s success in the car because I got absolutely killed both times that I faced him in Fast Street. But of course, Jon couldn’t leave well enough alone and took it back to the shop once again. For the 2021 season the engine was stroked to 482 cubic inches and got stuffed with a bigger cam. A Mustang 2 front end was dropped in and the cage was updated and certified to 7.50 specs. This made the car too fast for the 10.50 index so an ET Genie slowed it down and helped Jack go rounds. He finished in 2nd place for the year, after winning the last two races and the nickname “Back to Back Jack” was born!! For 2022 he missed the first race but after removing the ET Genie and adding the plate back, he ran a 9.22 @ 145mph. Jon said this was a scary run as the car drifted to the middle of the track, but was assured by Jack that everything was Ok, and he was trying to avoid a turtle crossing the track. Jack would then make his debut in Super

Street the 2nd week and take both #1 qualifier spot and the win. He would move on to the double header in June and win both of those races as well, then follow up the next weekend making it seven total wins straight. By the time this article hits the streets there will be one more Outlaw race, which means as you’re reading this Jack could be up to 8 straight wins already. Jack will be 20 years old today, as I am writing this, and has already accomplished an unbelievable record, earning the respect of everyone who knows him. He did however mention that during these events there is a really creepy guy named Henry always lurking around his trailer, but we assured him that we’ve all had to deal with that guy.

DJ Shaw Rockets To Granite State Pro Stock Series Win at Monadnock Speedway

By JEFF BROWN

an event in Maine opened the schedule for Shaw and a couple other drivers to make the trip to “Mad Dog” for Saturday’s racing. Under cloudy skies, Joey Doiron clocked in fastest in time trials, with Dylan Estrella drawing the pole position in the pre-race redraw.

for Granite State Pro Stock Series WINCHESTER, N.H. - DJ Shaw did not plan on a trip to Monadnock Speedway. Monadnock Speedway did not plan on a rain delay. But Shaw made the most of both turns of fate. The multi-time Super Late Model champion picked up the win in Sunday’s rain-delayed Doghouse 75, the fourth race of the Granite State Pro Stock Series 2022 season. An early cancellation of

But clouds quickly gave way to popup rainstorms that soaked the track beyond recovery, and with no break in the pattern, track officials were forced to call the night early, moving the evening’s feature racing to Sunday afternoon.

Estrella led the field to green under sunny skies, distancing himself from the pack as outside polesitter Garrett Hall fell back through traffic. Shaw, who started fourth, climbed to second and began chipping away at Estrella’s advantage. As the race approached halfway, Shaw and the top-five cars quickly closed the gap to Estrella, with Shaw looking for a way around the race leader. On lap 42, Shaw found an opening at last, getting underneath the rookie and driving on past. While Doiron and Jimmy Renfrew, Jr. worked on Estrella, Shaw drove away, setting a blistering pace. Doiron eventually cleared Estrella, but Shaw was already several car lengths ahead, and with the race running clean and green, Doiron would have to chase Shaw down the hard way.

Doiron’s second-place finish, his fourth topfive run of 2022 in four starts, helped the 2019 GSPSS champion to pad his points lead.

Early leader Estrella was sixth across the line. Maine’s Joe Pastore, another of the last-minute additions to the entry list, made his first-ever trip to Monadnock successful with a seventh-place run. Five cars, including third-inpoints Luke Hinkley, had other plans in place for Sunday and were unable to return for the feature. BUILT NOT BOUGHT

By MARK LaBRANCHE

This is a series of articles that will be looking at cars that are built not bought. Simply said people who built their cars themselves with friends and family. Nothing wrong with buying an already built car turnkey. I have much respect for any Motorhead! If you out there having fun, riding in a car that is just cool to me. For myself, I can’t stop looking with amazement at the caliber of cars that are built in someone’s garage or under a lean-to. In the up-and-coming articles you will see jaw dropping cars that were built by their owners, with their own hands, sweat and tears. Some will have close friends or family helping them, guiding them or maybe even painting it for them. The bottom line is that they took the time to build their car, their time and long hours, to get it done. This article is about Steve Tanzella’s beautiful 1956 Chevy Gasser. It is old school and I personally love

it. This just SCREAMS Gasser and takes you back to the days of old. I mean, just look at the front end jacked up with the moon eye gas tank. Big block Chevy with fuel injection hanging out of the hood. White headers coming out of the fenders. Side pipes coming out of the fenders and dumping out to the side. The blue tinted glass with wheel wells cut just like back in the day. This looks like it is going 100 mph just sitting there. When Steve drives around the pits, every single person turns and looks at this Gasser. Steve calls this work of art “Rat Patrol “and how can you not love that name.

Steve is a quiet man who is very humble. I had to squeeze information out of him. Trust me, you can just tell he’s got the racing bug like all the rest of us. The details of this car is what is most impressive about “Rat Patrol”. He made sure everything was period correct and top shelf. Look at the pictures and you will see exactly what I am talking about. Steve purchased the car from a friend in Stow, Massachusetts in 2000. His friend was driving around western Mass and saw the car being

pushed out of a barn. Two brothers had owned the car and raced it at Lebanon Valley back in the day (Steve found a win sticker on the window from Lebanon Valley). The car first had a 4-inch roll bar and the motor was a healthy 283 with an Olds/Pontiac rear end with 5.57 gears. Talk about winding the 283 to the moon. Ironically, the rear end is now in Walden Automotive 33 Willy’s that run with the SEGA down south. Continued Next Page

Steve decided to make a two-lane clone when he first got the car. He ran a 55-glass front end with a 454 and 4 speed. The car did have some issues. Steve had to cut out the C channel front rails because they were not straight. He replaced them with 2x4 tubing and a new front straight axle and built a roll bar that later became a cage. Steve drove the car on the street for a few years and raced it in nostalgia races a couple of times. That is when he got bit by the racing bug. Like most of us, he just wanted to go faster and faster. He got rid of the tunnel ram and added Hilborn stack fuel injection on it and changed over to alcohol and ran the car for 5 years like that.

hurting. So, he fixed the motor and put back the Hilborn stack fuel injection on alcohol. Like all of us Steve likes the stacks poking out of the hood. The car launches like a bear out of the hole. Figure 4 - 7 You can see the rear tires screaming and wrinkling up on the starting line. To date, the car has run its best with the fuel injection of 9.85 at 133 MPH. If you ever get the chance, go to New England Dragway. Most of the time they have some type of old school racing going on at the end of the month. You can check out their schedule for details.

That’s a wrap for this edition of BUILT NOT BOUGHT. Hope you like it and always remember to, have fun, race at the track and be safe. Photos by Mark LaBranche Media and Primetime Video and Photo Mark LaBranche Founder of NEW ENGLAND GRUDGE Supporter of all drag racing

He put in pistons and a can with a 6/71 blower and drove it on the street like this for about a year or so. Then the racing bug came back again. Steve raced the car like this for about 3 years. The ”Rat Patrol” ran its best time ever at 9.58 at 138 mph. But, the party was over, and the motor was CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

IN WHAT STATES ARE RADAR DETECTORS LEGAL TO USE? By JAN @ ARTICLEBIZ.COM Originally Published May 23, 2022

Most Americans are not satisfied with a moderate speed while driving. They want to be the fastest driver on the road, as well as get to the places they’re going to in record time.

A fair amount of people that own cars in the United States have their own radar detectors. Their reason for having one is because they feel the speed limit presently is too low.

The radar detector serves as their alarm whenever there are police near by. Once the radar detector alarm sounds, they can ease up on the gas pedal and slow down their speed.

The radar detectors work by picking up a signal from the policeman’s radar gun. Unfortunately they are not effective 100%of the time. Because of the radar detectors being used by so many motorist, cops have resorted to hiding in alleyways or behind bridges, in an attempt to avoid being detected by the radar detectors. Motorists on the other hand are being clever themselves, they are aware of these tactics from the police. So to overcome the cops strategy of being deceptive, more enhanced, top-dollar detectors have entered the market. Although the police are always improving their techniques of catching the radar detector users, they are not able to keep the road radar detector free.

-Laser Jammers are illegal to use in California, Illinois, Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Tennessee, -Virginia, and Washington D.C. And since there is no federal law banning them, they can be used in other states. If you are considering buying a radar detector be sure to know what your state’s law is regarding the use of them. Also do some research on the different types of radar detectors available to suit your needs. Before you start shopping for a radar detector, make sure you understand what options are available. Such as:

Another form of radar detection are laser jammers. They work by transmitting an invisible light source back to the original police laser gun. The return signal confuses the laser gun and the officer is unable to clock the driver’s speed.

Corded Radar Detectors

Radar detectors are legal in many cities and states throughout the United States. But, in some of the states that allow radar detectors they have some restrictions.

The Factors:

I have prepared a list below that discusses the states with laws against radar detectors and the states with restrictions.

Filtering

-Virginia, Georgia currently prohibits the use of radar detectors.

Cordless radar detectors Remote-Mount Radar Detectors Range Smartphone or GPS connectivity Budget

-The District of Columbia does not allow radar detectors. Radar detectors are also not allowed in all commercial vehicles and all vehicles over 18,000 pounds or heavier. -Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Maine, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming have all banned mounting radars and/or obstructions on the windshield. -Missouri and North Carolina have no restrictions on window obstructions. -Radar jammers are not allowed in any state. This is a federal law. -Alabama prohibits radar detectors on all commercial vehicles.

Take your time in selecting the right radar detector. Lighten up on the heavy foot with the gas pedal and be safe. Jan is retired, enjoys golfing and reading a good book on a rainy day. www.centercapsautoparts247.com Article source: https://articlebiz.com

NEW ENGLAND TOP FUEL MOTORCYCLE: TOM McCARTHY

MICAH FENWICK

Photos by Tom McCarthy Photography Micah Fenwick of Belmont Performance Motorcycles, from Belmont Maine, is a man on a mission with a grand vision: to go Top Fuel motorcycle drag racing with the best in the business. It’s a project he has been cultivating for close to a decade now and it starting to bare fruit. As of June 2022, he’s entered his first national event level of competition with his newly minted Top Fuel bike created by Alwine Top Fuel. Micah now has a tiger by the tail, a tiger capable of generating in excess of 1,200 HP. On June 17th, 2022, Micah and his team entered the excitement with the Pingel Enterprise Top Fuel Motorcycles, during the WorldWide Technology Raceway, Summer Speed and Fire Spectacular, held in Madison, IL. The Mid-West Drag Racing Series will showcase six exciting classes during the event, including some of the fastest and quickest Top Fuel Motorcycles in the world, sponsored by Pingel Enterprises. Micah’s team, in joining in with the Mid-Western Drag Racing Series (MWDRS), is now on the books as an active Top Fuel motorcycle drag racing team, in a national points series. The race in Madison, IL, is race 28| Motorhead Magazine - July 2022

two, of a three race series, which will conclude in Tulsa, Ok on October 7-8, when the MWDRS enters the famous Throwdown in T-Town event, to entertain thousands of fans who flock to the Osage Casino track every year for this event. Micah Fenwick, of Belmont Maine is a Top Fuel motorcycle drag racer who has had a love of the sport since his youngest days. During his youth Micah had his share of dirt and trail bikes before moving on to street bikes. His love of all things fast led him to motorcycle drag racing where he became fast attached to the biggest and baddest bikes, the Top Fuel motorcycles, which are the kings of the sport. After seeing his greatest inspiration, the legendary Elmer Trett make a pass, that was it for Micah, he was hooked. He wanted in on that action! Micah has owned his own business, Belmont Cycles since 1998 and has been repairing and modifying motorcycles since 1986. In motorcycle drag racing Micah has raced everything from bracket ET bikes to Top Gas Sportsman racing machines and the much quicker Funny Bike type machines. He purchased his first Top Fuel bike of vintage origin in 2007 and began getting his early education in T/F motorcycle drag racing. After he sold that bike in 2015, he moved up to having a state-of-the-art modern Top Fuel bike built from the Continued Next Page

motor featuring side mounted cam-shaft drive by external toothed belt. With a stronger, more robust crankshaft and larger output shaft area, this motor is made for maximum power output and dimensional stability. In 2021, Micah began testing and getting a feel for the new bike and has run numbers in the 4.0-eighth mile at close to 200 MPH which puts him right on the 5 second doorstep in performance. His performance at the MWDRS event qualified him in the number 4 spot with a 4.36 @ 160.73 MPH. Micah is used to tuning for 200’ and New England Dragway. At Madison he was greeted by 96 degree temps, high humidity, 4,000’ of corrected altitude with 145 grns of water. His team stepped up the blower drive, adjusted the nitro percentage and did just fine for a

During eliminations, Micah drew Sam Wills in the E-1 round as he found himself facing a man who’s been building and tuning T/F motorcycles since 1976. Sam unleashed a 4.26 to Micah’s struggling 5.32, but the learning experience was worth a boat load to come this far. Racing on the road a thousand miles from home, in sweltering heat, with a new team and a new bike is difficult at best. Micah handled it like a pro, including a flat tire on the way back from the race. This is life in the fast lane. Micah Fenwick has arrived and is in it to win it. Race number one, to learn and experience for him was mission accomplished. Micah Fenwick’s Team includes: Ron Lambert, Ron Saunders, Dennis Green, Mike & Mike Zombik. ang GT 5.0

By Bruce Anthony The Ford Mustang always stimulated an interest in my mind but in the early 90s, my first fox body ride catalyzed the thrill, with its acceleration and smell of burning rubber at the initial hit which set the hook for me. So in 2002, fresh out of high school, I was fortunate enough to score a 2002 4.6 convertible and was excited to add the basic modifications (within my capacity at the time) like a full exhaust system, cold air intake and a plug-and-play tune. With my head held high, I drove that car everywhere, but unfortunately having a child at a young age necessitated the sale of the car to provide for my new family. Years later, intense sweat and some luck, I located a 2019 GT with a PP2 package, which was the perfect base for what I intended to do Continued next page

with it...and the icing on the cake was there was only 2000 miles on the odometer. Having a 6-speed with no leather interior (sweating summers), I was very happy after only a 10 mile test drive. The next morning, with my coffee in hand, the excitement of the “build” was momentarily overwhelming. I ordered a Roush 750 HP supercharger because I wanted to keep the factory warranty. Once it arrived with other parts on order, I started construction with the installation of the supercharger, the oil gear and crank sprocket (known weak points), a bigger radiator to avoid the heat soak with the Roush blower, a 170 degree thermostat and swapped out the coolant tank to a Mishimoto. In addition, I went down 4 sizes on the blower pulley, swapped out the injectors for 1000 cc units, and put in a 3-line return style fuel pump. The drivetrain upgrades included a Barton short throw shifter, Mantic clutch kit, 1-piece aluminum driveshaft - with the stock M/T -82 that I know I’m on borrowed time with. I then installed Kooks exhaust long tube headers with a Roush X-pipe, keeping the factory electric exhaust only because I like pulling up on “quiet mode” and switching off to “track mode”. Now that I knew I was approaching the 1000 horsepower club, I went with G Force Outlaw half-shafts and a full Ford track pack including BMR spherical vertical links, adjustable toe links, cradle lockout bushings, driveshaft loops and a few other miscellaneous extras. With Brembo brakes and Michelin tires, it stops and goes to my liking. As far as exterior cosmetics, I installed smoked out Euro tail lights, LED reflector lights, new reverse lights that also have LED brake lights. On the interior, I have a custom steering wheel with built-in shift lights and digital readout display. An in-dash passenger gauge display made by Navos was also installed. Along with other small details, 38| Motorhead Magazine - July 2022

most of the factory interior panels were replaced with custom carbon fiber made panels. I had the glass tinted all around and then laid on my blue stripes. Even after all these mods, I seem to come up with something new to do to it every week. I’m not sure when enough will be enough. All I can say is I love every second I’m behind the wheel. It’s a sense of accomplishment, where I was to where I am. The work I put into not only building the car, but to also get to the point that I could build it...its a dream I chased and never let go of. One day I hope to pass it down to my kids to enjoy.

Originally published May 8, 2022 Excavators are massive construction machines with a stick, boom, cab, and bucket mounted on the “house.” Hydraulic cylinders, fluid, and hydraulic automobiles are used to carry out a hydraulic excavator’s capabilities and actions. A hydraulic cylinder operates in an essentially distinct manner from cable-operated excavators, which appoint winches and metallic ropes to reap actions. ATTACHMENTS AND PARTS OF EXCAVATORS Excavators are made so that they can be used for various works. The power of hydraulic excavators has grown far beyond bucket excavation. Excavators are now commonly used for multiple purposes other than excavation. Many excavators have a fast coupler for easier attachment mounting, allowing the machine to be more productive on the worksite. Excavators are often used in

conjunction with loaders and bulldozers. A dozer blade is found on compact, wheeled, and medium-sized excavators. This horizontal bulldozer blade is mounted to the undercarriage and is used to level and push discarded material back into a hole. It’s made up of attachments that help in digging and holding. It also has a rotating platform and wheels, which provide it with the moving

The branches and parts used in excavators are augers, buckets, coupler, clamps, breakers, rippers, thumbs, boom, hydraulic cylinder, engines, cab, track frame, and a counterweight. People use excavators in massive and small systems. These machines have a prolonged growth and arm, giving a wide operating variety for duties pretty far from the system that is difficult to attain, including deep trenching and underwater digging. BOBCAT BACKHOE EXCAVATORS Another device you might often see on production sites is the backhoe loader. It is likewise frequently used for landscaping and mining duties. The edge of the backhoe loader is used to push surfaces with miles of substances together with the soil. The boom and arm on the lower back have the same motive as a general-motive excavator. However, as opposed to being capable of rotating 360 degrees, it best rotates approximately 205 degrees.

The 22 Rally, Driving for Veterans By ALLEN “VIP PRIMO” HARRIS, EXECUTIVE AUTOMOTIVE SOCIETY Every year a group of dedicated drivers in very fast cars head out to tracks across New England. At first you may think this is all just for fun and far be it from me to deny that it isn’t. Imagine hitting the track in any vehicle to see what it can do is compelling, but that is not the main goal they have. The real ideal that pushes these drivers to head out before the sun has risen from all across the area is something bigger, supporting veterans. Indeed it’s even in the name. The 22 Rally name comes from a number that is used many times by veteran support groups and has become synonymous with the various causes. It’s the number of veterans that take their own life per day. No matter how stalwart you are that number will stagger you to the core. These are people that supported your freedom, lived through adversity just to make this choice when they come home. People you would give up comfort to make sure they are, yet they still take this drastic action. These are your neighbors, even your friends. I would love to explain the reasons, but that would be an article unto itself written by people far more wellversed than myself in them, but it would be better to suggest looking those articles up to understand more. Today’s purpose is to define why we support these events; to get that 22 down to zero. The 22 Rally’s main supported charities are Mission 22 and Veterans 42| Motorhead Magazine - July 2022

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Inc. Mission 22 offers programs that directly support veterans in their struggles and Veteran Inc. helps with housing veterans who don’t have a place to go. To get ahead of the underlying issues takes these support programs to accomplish. The first hurdle they face alone is just spreading awareness. Go to any of the 22 Rally events and whether you know it or not you’re running into someone that has benefited from one of these programs directly now returning to the cause that funded their healing. That was what really made events like this so important to me is to realize that someone I’ve known for years say they were in one of the programs and we just never knew it. Assistance that many can’t even put into words. For the event, this is where it all started for the 22 Rally back when it was known as the White Mountain Rally. Now they’re on their 6th running, only skipping one year due to the pandemic. Drivers drove up through New Hampshire and took on the Canaan track in New Hampshire first. The next day a car show at Waterville Valley Estates where you could enjoy a photo booth, vinyl printing, or purchase items from the charity. Later that night they had fireworks. The last day they headed up the mountain for pictures to celebrate the event. The event itself was jam packed with activity from beginning to end. The great thing about this event is the positive feel from everyone in the event. When you’re supporting great charities the little things that normally bother you like the hotel or construction suddenly seem so small. Take the wrong exit? Who cares, we’ve got a cause to

support! Getting to the goal is the purpose. It’s prevalent in everything everyone does and you can see it in the smiles on all the faces, the handshakes, the laughter and even in some cases, the tears. Everyone knows they’re part of something that is indeed bigger than themselves.

If you ever consider having your own event we hope that you’ll always consider a charity. It just improves the value of your event and the car community as a whole. If you’re looking for an event that will engage you and drive you, even provide some purpose, then maybe you should consider the 22 Rally.

THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES

The automotive industry in the United States began in the 1890s and, as a result of the size of the domestic market and the use of mass production, rapidly evolved into the largest in the world. The United States was the first country in the world to have a mass market for vehicle production and sales and is a pioneer of the automotive industry and mass market production process. During the course of the 20th century global competitors emerged especially in the second half of the century primarily across European and Asian markets, such as Germany, France, Italy, Japan and South Korea. The U.S. is currently second among the largest manufacturer(s) in the world by volume. American manufacturers produce approximately 10 million units annually.

13 County Road, East Freetown, MA 02717

Phone: (508) 995-6764

Notable exceptions were 5.7 million automobiles manufactured in 2009 (due to crisis), and more recently 8.8 million units in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. While production peaked during the 1970s and early 2000s at levels of 13–15 million units.

Starting with Duryea in 1895, at least 1900 different companies were formed, producing over 3,000 makes of American automobiles. World War I (1917–1918) and the Great Depression in the United States (1929–1939) combined to drastically reduce the number of both major and minor producers. During World War II, all the auto companies switched to making military equipment and weapons. However, by the end of the next decade the remaining smaller producers disappeared or merged into amalgamated corporations. The industry was dominated by three large companies: General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, all based in Metro Detroit. Those “Big Three” continued to prosper, and the U.S. produced three quarters of all automobiles in the world by 1950 (8.0 million out of 10.6 million). In 1948, 50 percent of U.S. households owned at least one automobile. Imports from abroad were a minor factor before the 1960s.

Beginning in the 1970s, a combination of high oil prices and increased competition from foreign auto manufacturers severely affected the companies. In the ensuing years, the companies periodically bounced back, but by 2008 the industry was in turmoil due to the aforementioned crisis. As a result, General Motors and Chrysler filed for bankruptcy reorganization and were bailed out with loans and investments from the federal government. But according to Autodata Corp, June 2014 seasonally adjusted annualized sales is the biggest in history with 16.98 million vehicles and toppled previous record in July 2006. Chrysler later merged into Fiat as Fiat Chrysler and is today a part of the multinational Stellantis group. American electric automaker Tesla emerged onto the scene in 2009 and has since grown to be one of the world’s most valuable companies, producing around 25% of the world’s fullyelectric passenger cars. Prior to the 1980s, most manufacturing facilities were owned by the Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) and AMC. Their U.S. market share has dropped steadily as numerous foreign-owned car companies have built factories in the U.S. As of 2012, Toyota had 31,000 U.S. employees, compared to Ford’s 80,000 and Chrysler’s 71,100. “DAI Services Commercial, Industrial & Residential Properties” THE WATER RESTORATION PROCESS

1. Inspection & Assessment An initial and thorough inspection of your property is completed to assess the extent of the damage. This will identify and eliminate safety hazards, and determine a category of water damage and class of intrusion.

2. Water Removal/Extraction Liquid water is vacuumed, mopped, squeegeed, and/or otherwise “forcefully” removed from the structure. Any damaged and/or contaminated contents and material are removed from the affected area.

4. Cleaning Soils and debris must be removed to expedite the drying process contaminated materials, surfaces, and content that can be restored require cleaning. 5. Reconstruction Demoed or removed and discarded materials are replaced or rebuilt - such as drywall, flooring, and insulation. Detailed cleaning completes the process.

3. Drying Disruptive. These methods involve removing wet items, injecting air, or perforating surfaces. Aggressive: Used when contamination and damage are not concerns. Air Movement: Promotes fast drying of surfaces and provides air circulation. Dehumidification: Reduces the amount of moisture content in the air.

WATER DAMAGE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A VERY SERIOUS MATTER FOR PROPERTY OWNERS – IT CAN DESTROY CEILINGS, FLOORS, AND WALLS; AND IF NOT IMMEDIATELY TREATED, MAY LEAD TO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE AND MOLD GROWTH. MOST COMMON CAUSES OF WATER DAMAGE ARE: • PLUMBING FAILURES (PIPE LEAKS, CLOGS, AND BURSTS) • WATER HEATER LEAKS AND RELEASES • APPLIANCE FAILURES (DISHWASHERS, WASHING MACHINES, REFRIGERATORS, A/C UNITS, ETC.) • TOILET, SINK, AND TUB OVERFLOWS • ICE DAMS, ROOF LEAKS, STORM DRAIN AND GUTTER BACKUPS • NATURAL DISASTERS • SUMP PUMP FAILURES • SPRINKLER / FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM FAILURES

VACATION TRIPS TO ADD TO YOUR 2022 BUCKET LIST By BLAKE McCOY

Home to romantic canals and distinctive architecture, Amsterdam is loaded with character and hospitable people. Do as the locals do and rent a bike to roll through the streets. This picturesque city gets a lot of attention for legalized marijuana and a red light district but offers much, much more. Whether exploring on the water, by bike, or on foot, Amsterdam has proven itself on more than one occasion to be a bucket-list-worthy destination and often serves as a gateway for American tourists to the rest of Europe.

Originally published April 12, 2022 The pandemic dealt a big blow to travel bucket lists everywhere. With many COVID-19 travel restrictions being lifted, this could be the year to revisit those travel plans. Here is a starting point for travel inspiration so you can begin booking travel accommodations.

Spot Wildlife at Serengeti National Park For an immersive safari experience only found in Africa, Serengeti National Park is teeming with wildlife such as elephants, zebras, lions, and more. This national park is regarded as one of the best safari destinations in the world. The scenery and big game are some of the most awe-inspiring views humans will gaze upon in their lifetime. On my trip with family in 2007, we even took a hot air balloon ride at sunrise over the savannah. Absolutely breathtaking.

Greece’s tourism was among some of the hardest hit during the pandemic. With a hopeful future ahead, the country is now welcoming back tourists. To escape the touristy islands of Santorini and Mykonos, opt for a sailing trip with stops on some of the lesser-known but beautifully inhabited islands. With over 2,000 islands, Greece has a ton of options. Set sail on calm seas and soak up the sunshine by exploring empty beaches. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, he works in heavy highway construction along with structural construction (roads, bridges, barrier walls, cattle guards, and water tanks). Juan’s wife, Mindi, and their four kids love cruising the “old school” vehicle. “Bought in 2000, this Mercury is the first car of this nature I’ve had. It is a 200 horsepower 200 C.I. straight 6 with auto transmission. Neither needed any rebuild, and overall, the car has not received any restoration due to nothing needing attention. The exterior Palomino Red paint compliments the large red interior with all-vinyl, red bucket seats.

THE GREAT RACE

JIM WEICHERDING

Rocky Point on Saturday, June 18th, just to witness these cool antiques, muscle cars, classic trucks, jalopies and more outlandish vehicles start The Great Race.

The Great Race annual automotive event is 39 years old and based upon the movie with the same name that showcased at drive-ins and movie theaters nationwide back in 1965. The starring roles in this very successful movie featured the actors and actress, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk and Natalie Wood. Over the past years, this event began in states all across the USA but never in Rhode Island. It never started here and it never ended here. This year however, The Great Race started at the infamous Rocky Point State Park with an end run 2,300 miles away in Fargo, North Dakota. (I actually lived in Fargo, North Dakota for a couple of years when I was a kid. Beautiful place to end this race.) Rocky Point State Park in the state of Rhode Island was a great place to start the race this year. I mean, secret race. Nobody is supposed to know about this race so please keep this article to yourself. It’s our little secret. 1,000’s of spectators converged at 52| Motorhead Magazine - July 2022

The initial road course took the 130 drivers and navigators through the Narragansett Bay area on their way to Fargo, North Dakota. Drivers rely heavily on their navigators and their fine-tuned epic course timing and navigation skills. Similar to the Death Race Movies without all of the blood, guts and burst into flames vehicle crashes. Drivers and navigators vying for that $50,000 grand prize if they are able to cross the finish line before anyone else does, arrived from around the world. Participating drivers and navigators were from the USA, Canada, England, Australia and as far away as Japan hoping to

be the first place vehicle crossing that finish line at the end of this endurance course. All of the vehicles were pre-dated, automotive manufactured and older than 1975. More than 50 of those manufacturer’s vehicles actually pre-dated WWll. The 2 oldest secret race registered vehicles were 1916 Hudsons. 55 year old Smithfield resident and automotive enthusiast, Tom Laferriere,

registered his 1939 Packard 120 Model for this race. He is joined by his navigator, 57 year old A.J. SanClemente from Northborough, Massachusetts. Tom has said that he wanted to participate in The Great Race for decades. Aware, that this year’s race was leaving Rhode Island, he made his move and signed on to be a part of something challenging yet fun at the same time. It will no

doubt gain him some well deserved bragging rights down the road. The 1939 Packard 120 Model was purchased by the Laferriere family back in 1970 and fully restored by 1988. Tom is well known in the area for his buying, selling, trading and servicing vintage vehicles. The Great Race started on a beautiful Saturday with mild temperatures and

sunny skies. A special thanks to Lou Cicerone for his wonderful photos at the starting location of this automotive event. All of us here at Motorhead Magazine hope that the same starting point weather pattern stays with all of these drivers and navigators throughout this entire race and everyone stays safe behind the wheel and passenger seat.

AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN

In the United States, automotive design reached a turning point in the 1920s when the American national automobile market began reaching saturation. To maintain unit sales, General Motors head Alfred P. Sloan Jr. suggested annual model-year design changes to convince car owners that they needed to buy a new replacement each year, an idea borrowed from the bicycle industry (though Sloan usually gets the credit or blame). Critics called his strategy planned obsolescence. Sloan preferred the term “dynamic obsolescence”. This strategy had far-reaching effects on the auto business, the field of product design, and eventually the American economy. The smaller automakers could not maintain the pace and expense of yearly re-styling. Henry Ford did not like the

model-year change because he clung to an engineer’s notions of simplicity, economics of scale, and design integrity. GM surpassed Ford’s sales in 1931 and became the dominant company in the industry thereafter. The frequent design changes also made it necessary to use a body-on-frame rather than the lighter but less adaptable monocoque design used by most European automakers. Some U.S. designers include Gordon Buehrig, who was responsible for the Auburn 851, as well as the Cord 810 and 812 (hence also the Hupmobile Skylark and the Graham Hollywood). In the 1930s, Chrysler’s innovations with aerodynamics helped launch the Chrysler Airflow in 1934, which was revolutionary and

Forward look design in the mid-1950s. Exner is also credited with using wind tunnel testing to justify incorporating tailfins, thus moving the company away from boxy-looking cars into more aerodynamic and futuristic designs. Raymond Loewy was responsible for a number of Studebaker vehicles, such as the Starlight (including the bullet-nose). Starting in the 1960s, Dick Teague, who spent most of his career with American Motors Corporation (AMC), originated the concept of using interchangeable body panels so as to create a wide array of different vehicles using the same stampings, starting with the AMC Cavalier. Teague was responsible for unique automotive designs such as the two-seat AMC AMX muscle car, the subcompact Gremlin, the Pacer, and Matador coupe, as well as the original and market segment-creating, Jeep Cherokee (introduced in 1983, and built to 2001 in the U.S. and through 2005 in China). Additionally during the 1960s, Ford’s first-generation Ford Mustang and Thunderbird marked another era leading into new market segments from Detroit. The Ford Mustang achieved record sales in its first year of production and established the pony car segment. Designers at work in 1961. radical compared to the contemporary vehicles. However, inadequate consumer acceptance of the advanced appearance of the cars forced a re-design of succeeding models of the Airflow. This marketing experience made the entire industry take note of the high risks involved in incorporating major design advancements into their production cars. A major influence on American auto styling and marketing was Harley Earl, who brought the tailfin and other aeronautical design references to auto design starting with the rear fenders of the 1948 Cadillac. Another notable designer was Chrysler group’s designer Virgil Exner, who developed the

JEFF THISTED: HOT ROD & MUSCLE CAR GUY JIM WEICHERDING When you write as many articles and contribute creative content to as many automotive magazines and radio shows nationwide year-after-year as I do, you make friends along the way. If you aren’t already familiar with

Jeff Thisted, and if you are a car guy or gal I find that highly unlikely, he is all about this automotive hobby and classic car culture. Jeff and I were brought together by the folks at CarShowNationals.com located in the state of Minnesota. Mike Linner is the domain owner and operates one of the largest and busiest car show websites in the USA. He also supports everything I do for this automotive lifestyle and industry. Jeff also participates regularly with Mike as co-hosts on the “Let’s Roll!” podcast viewed on the same website. I’m scheduled to be a guest on this popular podcast this summer with an open invitation to join-in whenever I get the time to do so. Jeff is originally from the state of Colorado. His love of cars and game shows eventually put him on the road to Hollywood, California. A self-admitted “Car Guy”, Jeff is also a television show and live-events host. Jeff is the

host for the HOT ROD POWER TOUR, The Car Craft Summer Nationals, The Car Craft Midnight Drags, The F-Body Nationals, The C-10 Nationals, The Summit Racing Autocross Week and The Goodguys Rod & Custom Autocross and Awards Ceremony. Jeff has presented cars at The North American International Auto Show, Chicago Auto Show, New York International Auto Show, Los Angeles Auto Show and many more automotive shows and events nationwide. He has also reviewed hundreds of vehicles for AutoTrader. com and Wheels-TV. Jeff ’s love of game-shows put him on the fast track to hosting two live/ interactive game-shows on GSN. He hosted “Quiznation” and “100 Winners” television shows. Jeff turned wrenches on classic American iron while starring in the hit show: “Rods ‘N Wheels” televised on The Discovery Channel and Velocity Network. He has appeared as an automotive expert on The History Channel’s “The History of Hot Rods & Muscle Cars” television show. Jeff also attended the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving 4-Day Grand Prix earning him an SCCA racing license. He enjoys slalom water-skiing, skateboarding pools, mountain biking and driving the tires off of his 1955 Chevy 210 Station-Wagon. No! It’s not a Nomad. Jeff is a great guy and very down-to-earth. We have each other’s cell phone numbers and communicate from time-to-time about cool automotive activities happening in America. The Outlaw GTO heads for high ground knowing very well that those drivers and passengers he just passed on the straight away stretch of the road are on their cell phones calling “911” saying they just saw a classic muscle car drive by them in their EV’s. Everyone knows damned well that these cars are banned from roadways across America. It’s all over the news. Etch turns on his car stereo and starts to laugh. The radio station just started playing: “I Fought The Law” by the Bobby Fuller Four. He reaches down and puts his finger and thumb on the dial and cranks it up. With a smile on his face, he mats the gas pedal launching his GTO down the road at a high rate of speed with nobody in sight anywhere near him. Trees line both sides of the road and nothing else. Minutes

later, he cruises slowly past a church with worshipers leaving the building watching him travel down the main street. Etch pulls a driver’s side u-turn fast bringing the GTO completely around facing the other direction. Tires scream to a halt and the engine RPM drops causing the car to slow down. Etch pulls over and gets out of his GTO. He leans up against the driver side front fender with both of his arms crossing his body and his left foot draped over his right foot and just stands still looking at the group of people heading towards their parked vehicles on the side of the church. His black scissors cut sleeveless button up shirt and worn out black jeans with loose laced black work boots looks out of place outside a church full of well dressed families. An attractive woman stops in her tracks

and starts walking his way with her eyes affixed on him just leaning on his car. “What are you doing here Jimmy?” she asks, with her head lowered trying to avoid making eye contact. Etch just stands silent and reaches out to her. He pulls her into his body and gives her a big hug and kiss on the cheek. Her body goes limp and he holds her up tighter as she lowers her head just below his left shoulder. Etch stands over six feet tall and she stands at five feet something. She looks up into his eyes behind his dirty sun tinted glasses: “You shouldn’t be here.”

OUTLAW RUN THE MOVIE, TELEVISION SERIES & MERCHANDISING JIM WEICHERDING What began a decade ago as a published paperback book titled: OUTLAW RUN, then becoming Motorhead Magazine’s longest running monthly feature series published in any automotive magazines available anywhere in the world titled: OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book Series, is now one mile closer to becoming a Hollywood full feature film titled: OUTLAW RUN The Movie and OUTLAW RUN The Television Series. Marra Design Associates, located in the state of Minnesota, recently offered an OUTLAW RUN Intellectual Property Agency Representation Agreement with their sights set on turning the popular book and series into a screenplay with professional screenwriters and potential celebrities wanting a starring role in both scenarios. Also included in the agency representation agreement was the exclusive two years rights to license OUTLAW RUN video games, toys, puzzles, apparel and a wide range of popular merchandise that would be available to the consumer related to the book, magazine series, movie and television series. OUTLAW RUN continues to receive editor rave reviews in automotive magazines across America, Canada and worldwide. With the current automotive climate we are dealing with right now, OUTLAW RUN, has gained a lot more traction and interest due to its unique and original storyline premise. Ten years ago, it was a fictional story about automotive enthusiasts losing their rights to drive classic muscle cars, cool trucks, hot rods, antique vehicles and high performance vehicles on America’s roadways. It’s against the law with severe consequences if caught doing so. I owned a jet black, 1969 Pontiac GTO and other GTO’s over the years, but my favorite was my “OUTLAW” GTO. Today’s soaring gas prices, manufacturers producing electric vehicles and drastic automotive equipment transformations, is a definitive prerequisite for what’s to come down the road for more than 120,000,000 automotive enthusiasts nationwide. It’s a political push to take away our automotive rights and freedoms. Other countries are in the process of banning gas fueled vehicles and switching over to EV-only means of transportation. Over time, the USA will be doing the same exact thing. I’m glad I’m not in my 20’s or 30’s right now with the future automotive climate we are facing in the years to come. Life is completely changing for everyone. OUTLAW RUN is one very fast, oil slick black, 1969 Pontiac GTO, driven by an owner with the courage to take his outrage to the streets, roadways and highways across Rhode Island and New England. An “Outlaw” born from Washington rules and regulations that hurt average people and remove our historic automotive culture and hobbies. What started out as fiction is

now becoming factual. It’s every car guys and gals apocalyptic horror story coming true. OUTLAW RUN is a high octane, adrenaline pumping, actionpacked story with compelling characters and continued twists and turns that will have everyone on the edge of their cinema seats and drive-in lawn chairs while watching the full feature movie. Magazine editors and critics write: OUTLAW RUN is a cross between Vanishing Point, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy except with banned muscle cars. The Pontiac GTO is the star muscle car. Pontiac manufacturing plant has been shutdown for years. Who saw that coming before it happened? The “Buckle Up!” action puts the reader in the drivers seat with no signs of slowing down. Hot Rod Magazine Live and The Muscle Car Place Radio Show Celebrity Host and my friend, Dennis Pittsenbarger quoted: “Buckle Up! OUTLAW RUN is one helluva ride and the only book I’ve ever read that requires seatbelts in order to read it!” It’s a non-stop car chase action story with great characters and surprises throughout, from front cover to back cover. OUTLAW RUN captures the reader from the first paragraph and doesn’t let go until the dramatic ending. OUTLAW RUN has also been featured as a multi-month abbreviated series, project build photos and articles along with my GTO artwork in The Legend Magazine nationwide. Many automotive magazines, radio shows and podcasts feature OUTLAW RUN Content here across the USA and worldwide. OUTLAW RUN The Movie and television series is considered to be the next The Fast And The Furious automotive franchise during a time where heroes are average individuals hoping to send the message: “Our automotive rights and freedoms are not going to go away without a fight! If you want to scrap it, you gotta catch it!” You can read OUTLAW RUN Beyond The Book Series published every month in 1,000’s of Motorhead Magazine printed copies distributed across New England or online at www.getmotorhead.com for a continued, “Ride of Your Life!”, that leaves you wanting more. Watch for OUTLAW RUN The Movie, television series and merchandising feature articles over the coming months in your favorite automotive passion publication: Motorhead Magazine.
