Older engines often have parts that are weakened by age. The 10-16 psi of constant cooling system pressure puts a stress on those parts and at some point they will begin to fail. DAVID’S 1957 CHEVY BELAIR DREAM CAR By JIM WEICHERDING David Lallier can still remember back in the day, when he was in his early teen years, that he was lucky enough to be able to hang around with his older brother Ray from time to time, growing up. He would teach him how to work on cars by letting him help him work on his own cars. David remembers the time after he was out of school. He worked on an engine that required all of the assembly units to be completely removed and disconnected. He was able to have the engine ready to take out when he got out of work later in the day. All he and his brother Ray had to do was to hook it up to a cherry picker and yank it out. By the end of the night they both had an engine running in that same car. Ray used to have all kinds of cool cars back in the day like Chevelles, an El Camino, a Vette and many others. Although David loved most of his brother’s cars, the one that got his attention the most was a 1957 Chevy. He thought it was the coolest car and absolutely loved the wings. Unfortunately, at that time, he was under the age of 16 and did not have enough money to be able to purchase it for himself. All he could do was hope that someday he could afford to buy one. He did finally end up with a 1969 GTO, with a 4-speed and a 400 engine under the hood when he was 18 years old. David said that was a great car too. He loved that car. Well, life goes on. Before he knew it he no longer had his GTO. He was raising his family and time flew by over the years.

Unfortunately, as time went by, prices on his dream car kept going up. Now that he is older and not necessarily wiser, a good friend of his spotted a 1957 Belair for sale locally and called him about it. He had to go take a look at it. When he was able to go see the Chevy he saw that this ‘57 had a metal flake burgundy wine paint job and was a 2 door sport coupe Belair. It had a hood scoop from a mid-60’s Vette, 4-speed transmission, 327 engine under the hood and had nice stance. Exactly the way David likes it. The custom interior was also an attractive selling point. This was the ‘57 Chevy he had been looking for all these years. This ‘57 Chevy is not perfect but it is in very good shape for a classic car that was restored about 23 years before that. David knew this car was calling his name when he walked around to the back of the vehicle and spotted the Harley-Davidson decal on the back window (he owns a Harley). CARRYING T Carl Tasca Senior Con�nues His Father’s Cobra Jet Legacy ED YESSAIAN If you’ve been a long-time reader of Motorhead, you know that every January we like to pay our respects to Rhode Island’s Hot-Rodding Hero, Bob Tasca Senior. I personally had the privilege of spending quite a few moments of my childhood around Tasca Ford as well as at New England Dragway with the Tasca family and was always excited to get sneak peaks at new and exciting Ford Performance vehicles before most of the general public got to see them. One of my favorite Bob Tasca Sr memories was seeing him literally glow with pride when his son Carl first took delivery of their 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang. Being the Godfather of the original Cobra Jet, this was a great moment for Bob Sr. and continues to be Carl’s way of honoring his father’s legacy. Carl recalls his father’s reaction to seeing the car for the first time, Bob Sr. had tears in his eyes, as he took it all in. This is one of Carl’s most cherished memories because his father’s entire existence revolved around his love for racing. Bob Tasca Senior once said, “Business made me money, but racing made me famous”. Bob Senior’s integrity and exceptional values held true in whatever he was doing. He was once quoted as saying “If you make people happy, the bottom line will happen”. And the way to make people happy was to give them a decent product. According to Bob Senior, “When you build something right, you don’t lose”. He proved this point time after time but the most significant instance was when he handed the set of keys to his 1968 Cobra Jet over to Mario Andretti who had never drag raced before. Andretti made short work of his opponent and was quoted as saying that he knew he would win, simply because Bob Tasca Senior built the car. This was one of the greatest compliments Bob Senior had ever received, but again he attributed the victory to the Cobra Jet, which he claimed was untouchable on the streets and strip. Forty years later, his son Carl would start his journey to keep the Cobra Jet on top of the world as well and has thus far done so in a couple different cars. multiple World Records by Carl, with each car having a completely different drivetrain set-up. This progression of the Cobra Jet cars exhibits an awesome timeline, showing the changes in technology and their returns on investment, in terms of elapsed times growing faster and faster through the years. It’s hard to believe how much these cars have evolved from the original Cobra Jet built by Bob Tasca Sr. in 1967 but alongside Carl Tasca Sr. and his crew we got a first hand look at all three cars, their powerplants, and some cool history about where it all began. Our story starts in 1967 when Bob Tasca Sr had enough of Ford being left behind and set out to once again make the Blue Oval the “King of the Road”. combination of parts straight from his own dealership’s inventory. There were no secret components, no classified information, just a pile of factory sourced items that worked unbelievably well together. Bob Sr started with a factory stock 428 Police Interceptor short block topped with high-flow 427cylinder heads, he then ground a camshaft for the combo and the KR-8 (King of the Road) was essentially born. Finishing off the package was a 427-oil pump, 427 distributor, an aluminum dual-plane intake, and a Holley 735 CFM carburetor “. The car ran low 13’s which kept it far ahead of the pack but could also drive cross country and back, which made it that much more impressive. This was the bar that all future Cobra Jet cars would have to live up to, including the current generations that have taken the drag racing world by storm. It’s only fitting that Carl Tasca Sr is constantly taking credit for some of the fastest quarter mile runs in the world and he has done so in three different Cobra Jet cars… In 2008 Ford released 50 units and obviously one went directly to Tasca’s flagship location in Cranston, RI. The car ran a best of 9.28 @ 147mph and was campaigned by Carl until the release of the 2010 Cobra Jet that Carl piloted to countless records all over the country. The 2010 car was the first Cobra Jet into the 7’s, ticking off a pass of 7.96

Carl’s 2016 Cobra Jet has run a best of 7.73 @ 183.24, which was only topped “temporarily” by one other car in the class. Carl is more than confident that once the 2021 season gets underway and the world returns to some normalcy, he will be able to again put the Tasca name on top of the world where it belongs. He plans on running this car for quite some time, despite also having a 2018 Cobra jet that is currently untouched, based on its historic signifi-

Tasca’s 2018 Cobra was intentionally built with serial number 001 in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Cobra Jet. It was presented to the Tasca family to honor Bob Senior and Carl was the guest speaker at the 50th Anniversary celebration where he was quoted saying, “It means everything to have our name held in such high regard”. He recalls one of his father’s last moments when he called a family meeting and told each and every one of them, that he “… created an impeccable reputation, so don’t screw it up”. And to this day those words resonate in the minds of the entire family as they strive to keep the family tradition alive, adapting to the changing world and embracing the technology that will be the future. I asked Carl what he thought of the future, specifically electric cars and he cracked a little smile as he took me to a plaque on the wall featuring Bob Tasca 3rd having already set a record for electric passenger cars in of all things, the new Cobra Jet 1400 electric vehicle. With an elapsed time of 8.37@ 168.89, Bob 3rd once again put Tasca in the record books and kept the Cobra Jet on top of the world. According to Carl, “This was an amazing accomplishment, both for Ford Motor Company and the Tasca Family, but it should come as no surprise because this is what my father did, he lived to keep Ford on top of the world.” I asked Carl if he had any plans for the 2021 season and his reply was simply this, “I’m going to go out there and have fun. I don’t do this for any other reason but to honor my father. When I am in these cars, I have a picture of my father in my pocket and we accomplish what we do TOGETHER. Let’s begin the New year with his Cougar story. “How did my love affair with the ‘68 Mercury Cougar begin? I would say it’s a bit unusual being that my first Cougar was originally my Grandma’s car. If you’re picturing some cool grandma that was into muscle cars, well that certainly wasn’t the case. My grandmother was a white haired 70-something year old woman that didn’t even drive till she was 60!” So why was she driving this cool muscle car?

There really is no clear answer to that question. Marc’s uncle Jay was always in the car business, and he was the one that was instrumental in getting the Cougar. Maybe it was something he liked? “Nobody knows, but looking back it still seems an odd choice for his mother, especially given that she wasn’t an experienced driver and honestly not even a very good driver. It was only when I was about 14 years old that I suddenly noticed that this car was very cool, and it wasn’t just ‘the car grandma drives’ anymore.” Although by then it was looking a little rough, and the Cat was not running very well at all. “In 1982, grandma decides to get a new car, and she asks me (I’m sure with a hint from my mother) if I want the Cougar.” 15-yearold Marc spent most of his free time the next year rebuilding the motor with direction from his father. “Once we get it running well, my dad worked a deal with a friend who did auto body and soon the Mercury had a fresh coat of Black Cherry paint. The car was really sharp, and I drove it through high school and into college.” However, being an almost 20 year old car, Marc seemed to always be chasing repairs and decided he should get something a little newer and hopefully more dependable. “It was the right choice at the time, but I always had a bit of regret. So in my early 30’s, I used to look on and off in the auto trader magazines for another Cougar but never found anything I liked enough to purchase.” Fortunately, with the explosion of the internet and eBay in the early 2000’s, Marc started to look a little more seriously. “Having a demanding job and three young kids, I realized I didn’t have time for a project car; so I decided to look for something that didn’t need a ton of work.” Marc knew he wanted

something similar to his original Cougar…a 1968, black interior, black vinyl roof, similar paint color, automatic transmission, center console, factory AC (although my first Cougar’s never worked) and also maybe some things the original didn’t have such as front disc brakes and possibly the XR-7 package. “I looked for a few years mostly on eBay and did place a few bids but most of the cars that piqued my interest were too far away for me to feel comfortable buying sight unseen. Then in 2005 I saw one advertised that had basically everything on my wish list. While it wasn’t an XR-7 (not a deal breaker) and the factory AC didn’t work, it was almost a twin of my original Cougar but with front disc brakes and a cool “G” hood scoop added.” It also was a Dan Gurney Special, although besides the sticker in the rear window the other “upgrades” were long gone.” The fact that it was within driving distance made me feel comfortable. So I bought it and drove it the four hours home.”

The young man Marc purchased the Cougar from had done a lot of the work himself with the help of his father, which was so reminiscent of Marc’s first car. Mechanically it was in good shape and the paint was new and looked great. “I spent the first year getting the factory AC working and having new springs installed.” The new front springs led to some front end and power steering components being replaced, but mechanically it was very solid. “A previous owner had installed a wood grain contact tape on the dashboard I assume to give an XR-7 look. The tape was now all cracked and peeling but it gave me an idea. While I liked the look of the wood grain dash on the XR-7 models, I actually preferred the layout of the standard Cougar Dash, especially the roll-up door storage compartment under the radio as opposed to the clock which comes with the XR-7 package. Therefore, I took the dash pad off and traced it on a piece of cherry wood and my father-in-law did all the cutouts and finishing for me. It looks great even years later!” Marc also had installed two chrome Shelby bullet mirrors to add an awesome accent to an already beautifully designed car. “Marc has enjoyed his “new” Cougar now for over 15 years. “It’s a daily driver when the weather is good, and I get compliments everywhere I go. People honk and give thumbs-up every time I’m on the highway.” Marc can’t get gas without somebody wanting to ask him about the Mercury or tell him about one they had or somebody they knew had years ago. “My only pet peeve is that everyone asks what year it is because my plate is CUGR68!” (Special thanks to Larry Forte and Pete Ashworth of Central Truck in Cranston, RI for all their expert advice and guidance along with the many repairs over the years). Adam-12 in MI

By ROB MAY and MICHAEL HANCOCK Last month, we reached out from the South West (near Los Angeles California) to the North East. This month we did it again and found Michael Hancock’s Adam-12 car in Michigan. “It all started back in 1969 when, as a kid, I watched Adam-12 religiously on TV. For me, watching Reed and Malloy in action every week was a must. Just like thousands of other kids who watched the show, it made me want to pursue a career in law enforcement.” The show ran for seven seasons, from 1968 through 1975, with a total of 174 episodes. Fast forward to the early 2000s, when Michael saw an Adam-12 replica car for sale. “While that car was out of my price range, it got me thinking. The

networking and searching classified ads in order to obtain the parts I needed.” This was before Facebook, where today you can find a group for almost any subject or hobby. “I was able to track down most of the original equipment after learning what I needed, right down to the Trio T-2 “can” lights.” Today, they are extremely rare. “Luckily, a friend in Delaware had a set that was in great condition, and he agreed to sell them to me. The only thing not original is the hot sheet desk. They are nearly impossible to find, and I was unable to obtain one. Consequently, I had to have a replica fabricated from scratch using photos as a guide.” The car is equipped with a Federal Signal CP-25 siren and a Federal Signal speaker, in addition to the aforementioned “can” lights and hot sheet desk. The body and paint were just re-done by Alex Motors in Cleveland, OH. “They did a phenomenal job! I’ve tried my best to not only keep this car correct for a 1969 LAPD patrol car, but also to faithfully replicate those used in the Adam-12 TV show.” Jack Webb, the show’s primary creator and producer, was very concerned with depicting the details of the LAPD as accurately as possible. Building and owning this car has been a wonderful experience for Michael. “It has brought me into contact with several good people, and I have made a lot of great friends that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Many of these folks are fellow Adam-12 car owners, while others are aspiring owners. Nowadays, there are a couple of Adam-12 specific Facebook groups, and we are a tightknit bunch. We really like to help each other as much as possible. My car has provided many good memories. Building it was a labor of love, but it has paid me back ten-fold.”

next thing I knew, I was in Mobile, Alabama looking at a rust-free car that I could only get one picture of and very little information about from its listing in the classified ad. That’s a long drive from my home in Michigan, but it was worth it.” That car was a 1969 Plymouth Satellite, which Michael downgraded to Belvedere model trim for the sake of authenticity. It was equipped with a 318 cubic-inch small-block V-8 engine, but had it been a true LAPD patrol unit, it would have likely had a 383 cubic-inch big-block V-8. “I located and purchased a 1969 Chrysler Newport with a proper 383, and I rebuilt it to replicate those used in police vehicles.” Since it was a complete car, it also provided the necessary hardware, accessory mountings, motor mounts, etc. “In addition, I had the Newport’s heavy duty 727 Torquefilte automatic transmission rebuilt, and then I transferred all of those pieces into the Plymouth.” It took a lot of research to determine the correct emergency equipment for a 1969 LAPD patrol car. “Once I knew what I needed, I spent months 20| Motorhead Magazine - January 2021

Today there are many “new” Adam-12 tribute cars running around. “Over the years, I have been lucky enough to help some of these folks with their cars. I was fortunate to have Kent McCord sign my car. It has been a really fun car for local shows and parades, but it has also been in two movies, and it has been displayed at larger car shows in New York City, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Canada. When showing the car, I like to answer people’s questions. Even today, some folks don’t know much about the show or its vehicles. But for me, it’s especially rewarding to hear a younger voice say, ‘Hey it’s Adam-12!’” The Adam-12 television program is still popular today, and still has relevant lessons to teach. Its re-runs are broadcast on channels such as COSY and METV.

PRO STOCK/MOTORSPORTS NEWS GRANITE STATE PRO STOCK SERIES ANNOUNCES 2021 SCHEDULE By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA WALPOLE, N.H. -- Granite State Pro Stock Series officials announced on Thursday a 15-race schedule for the 2021 race season. The slate will bring drivers to three different New England states -- while visiting eight different tracks in one of the most complete schedules the series has ever offered for teams and fans. The calendar is headlined by the annual Newport Chevrolet 150 at Claremont Motorsports Park, this time on Saturday, July 31 -- a $10,000 to win show that is sure to draw the top Super Late Model talent in the region. The series will also make a debut at one of New England’s most historic tracks and return to multiple staple facilities, with a mix of flat and banked tracks planned. The season starts with the big debut in Connecticut. Granite State teams will compete at Stafford Motor Speedway for the first time as part of the annual NAPA Spring Sizzler weekend on Saturday, April 24 -a one-day show. Pro Stocks are no stranger to the Arute-owned facility -- having run as a weekly division for decades -- but now, the touring stars will invade to compete with some of the local talent that are sure to find themselves a ride. Following Stafford, just one week later, Monadnock Speedway will host their first of two series events on Sunday afternoon, May 2 as part of their season-opening Spring Dash weekend. Post-time for this event is 2 p.m., with the NHSTRA Modifieds, NELCAR Legends and more also on the card. A second stop at “Mad Dog” is slated for Saturday, September 4 as part of Labor Day weekend at the Winchester, New Hampshire, oval. The series heads to Bobby Webber’s Star Speedway for the first of two stops on Saturday night, May 8, before a return to the Star Classic weekend on Friday, September 17 comes in the thick of the championship battle. Last year, Derek Griffith and Joey Pole put together one of the best races in series history as part of the Classic at Star, which has become a staple track for the series. Claremont Motorsports Park hosts their first of three dates on Memorial Day weekend as a Sunday evening special, May 30. Following the $10,000 to win Newport Chevrolet 150 in July, an event won by Derek Griffith last year, the champion will be crowned at Claremont for the first time on October 16 as part of the track’s Fall Challenge weekend. Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine will hold two Granite State events for the first time in track history -- with stops set for June 12 and August 14. Last year, the series hosted more than 30 cars as a mix of regulars and track favorites competed for glory in the inaugural stop at Beech Ridge -- a race won by Wyatt Alexander. It is a 1970 Plymouth Duster that was built with a “no expense spared” a�tude and it shows everywhere you look. The body is all original steel but has been shaved, smoothed and customized. The engine bay is amazing, and the 340 Six-Pack engine is a work of art all on its own. ADAM-12 IN VA By ROB MAY and RYAN OLSON ADAM-12 moves from L.A. to VA for this feature. Ryan Olson owns this fine example of a 1968 Plymouth Belvedere in Manassas. “Cars were always the thing that kept my mind busy, as I was the only child and lost my dad when I was 5 years old. It was just my mom and I. She was a civil engineer, so there was always something structured going on.” Ryan is currently a Fleet Manager for Prince William County Police Department having worked in law enforcement now for over ten years. His obsession of cars started as a young boy. “My uncles were cops, and they liked cars. There were always nice cars around me and driven fast. I always wanted to collect all the Matchbox cars and 1/18 scale versions. Along with this car obsession, also came with me always wanting to be a police officer. Elaborating on my uncle, he had me view ADAM-12 when I was 6 or 7 years old. I was hooked on the show. It had the best of both worlds…Police work and the 1960s and 70s cars.” He couldn’t get enough of it. Ryan liked the big block Plymouths and the Fords, and he wanted one of each. “This is when my fondness for the Plymouth Roadrunner and Belvedere Police Pursuit started. By age 17, my hunt for one was in full swing.” Ryan went and saw many

he’s working on. “I buy the car and trusted him because he is in law enforcement without me seeing it in person.” Ryan admittedly was still super worried until the car arrived in Virginia with no rust and with many parts. “I knew I wanted to

It was a long few years, and I eventually lost my mother to cancer (2012). I was super depressed and now by age 23 I had lost both my parents to cancer.” Ryan needed a new project to keep my head up and not to travel down a dark road. “I decided I would finish my search on finding a Plymouth Belvedere to build my LAPD police pursuit.” While online and on forums often searching, Ryan finally comes across this CHP guy who (located in California 3k miles away) has a 68 Belvedere and he’s looking to sell it as he has a CHP Mustang

Now with the car home in his garage, Ryan became overwhelmed. “I began conversations with my friend Mark Galoustian, who had a ‘69 Belvedere and was working with the LAPD historical society as well as doing all the LAPD events. If Mark didn’t talk to me daily and show me where to research and put me in contact with the right folks about LAPD specs and ADAM-12 specs, my car wouldn’t be where it is today.” Ryan made a list of all the modifications needed to convert the car from a civilian model to a LAPD police pursuit spec. “Built to 1968 LAPD specs, the car has the ADAM12 shop numbers on it, and it is an LAPD built car

down to the sliding seat shotgun, hot sheet desk, seat mounted shot gun, trunk shotgun, motrac radio, and federal siren box…and down to the horn ring siren controls.” The best thing about the Belvedere Pursuits was it being a 4 door Roadrunner. “This is why the cops and driving instructors loved them. The torque and handling while driving hot somewhere was all there. It had all the room to spend hours working in it…and when you needed to get somewhere fast, it would get up and go quick. With a big block 383 330HP with 727 torque flite transmission, the car would get up and move to be a 4,000 pound tank on wheels.” “I would like to drive it as often as possible as it brings smiles to all ages and all groups of people. Something about the rumble and the classic black and white car with the coke bottling styling…wins over the looks of many. Driving it is fun as the big bench seat is super comfy and plenty of room to stretch out. It is easy to drive despite it being so big.” Ryan shows the car as much as he can. “I’ve won several awards for being the most creative or unique car at auto shows. The honor is to all the fallen hero things I get to partake in with other agencies. Being in law enforcement, I take the car to many events…and get invited for charity events and weddings. Best joy that I get out the car is all the smiles it brings to all walks of life ...and I still smile every time I walk out into the garage.” This classic black and white police car speaks for itself when you see and hear it go by. You don’t see this style vehicle often. It is a rare collector’s item. People don’t usually think of it, but when they see it they love it and take plenty of pictures.

In The Last American Hero, a 1973 feature film, the protagonist race car driver Elroy “Junior” Jackson played by 23-year old Jeff Bridges is determined to be his own man, live free and by his own ethical code, and beat down his competitors. Country boy Junior’s job is delivering his dad Elroy Jackson, Sr.’s moonshine. The hot dogger son rips up the rural backroads as he races from the law. The character of Junior, “drove a 1967 Mustang for moonshine runs, same body style but one year older as Bullitt Mustang,” according to IMDB (Internet Movie Database). Director Lamont Johnson, who started as an actor and went on to direct TV, such as eight episodes of The Twilight Zone series (“Hocus Pocus and Frisby,” ”Five Characters in Search of an Exit,” “Nothing in the Dark,”, “The Shelter,” “One More Pallbearer,” “Kick the Can,” “Passage on the Lady Anne,” and “Four O’Clock”) also favored inspiring film stories of the individual against the system, such as the Robbie Benson starring vehicle about a basketball player up against seemingly impossible odds, One on One (1977). The Last American Hero fulfills director Johnson’s sympathetic to the underdog character criteria. The story, the acting, the excitement of the racing scenes, and the every man quest for success under tough circumstances are worth the 95 minute ride in the vicarious race car driver’s seat. The story of The Last American Hero was written by William Roberts, most known for The Magnificent Seven (1960), the second most screened movie on TV. The racer’s story is based on a March 1, 1965, Esquire magazine article “The Last American Hero Is Junior Johnson. Yes!” by “new journalist” Tom Wolfe. The real life driver Junior Johnson, according to the article, “is a coon hunter, a rich man, an ex-whiskey runner, a good old boy who hard-charges stock cars at 175 m.p.h. Mother dog! He’s earning victories with a little help from his friends: his devoted and capable crew, includes Junior’s goofy yet loyal and likable brother Wayne, played truthfully by Gary Busey. Race car driver Junior is the toughest and coolest of the guys. He demonstrates his macho wisdom; for instance, he knows just how much pressure and pain to exert when a believably obnoxious crew member Lamar (Tom Ligon) tries to get the best of him.

For the biopic film The Last American Hero based on his life, Johnson was a technical advisor. In the film, our fictionalized hero Junior Jackson is played to perfection by Bridges as a tough guy, a man of action, and a good soul. Junior doesn’t realize delivering illegal booze - negotiating the wilds of Wilkes county, North Carolina’s bumpy, twisty roads - that he’s in training for the race track. Dad the distiller gets pinched by the police and thrown in the clinker. The father is told by his attorney that “his honor” the judge enjoys the senior Jackson’s illegal booze, even as the sheriff has blown up the family’s still. Elroy, Sr., a Henry David Thoreau-like true American character, felt imprisoned when he worked in a factory and turned to moonThe real-life legendary Junior Johnson. shining. Seeming to defy common sense the father chooses prison over freedom; on principle he won’t confess his crime. Like Thoreau, who stood up in civil disobedience against a tax that supported slavery and a war - as his friend Bronson Alcott did three years prior - the father in the film takes a stand against corrupt government’s unjust law against moonshining. The unappreciative judicial system gives the father a one-year prison sentence. Junior must travel the unmapped road to manhood. The Last American Hero hit title song I’ve Got a Name, sung by singing sensation Jim Croce, is an apt fit for Junior. Composer Charles Fox’s name might not be recognized but his myriad of TV show themes are still hummed such as that of The Match Game, What’s My Line?, and To Tell The Truth. Fox co-composed the music for Love, American Style, and he composed the mega-hit song “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” Norman Gimbel wrote the lyrics for that hit – and other famous songs such as “Sway” and “The Girl from Ipanema.” Gimbel and Fox’s theme for The Last American Hero is an anthem as American as it gets: “...Movin’ me down the highway, rollin’ me down the highway Movin’ ahead so life won’t pass me by And I’m gonna go there free … I got a dream, I got a dream They can change their minds but they can’t change me..”

Rookie racer Junior, having learned from his dad how to be his own man, is however untested in the world outside small town life. Friendly Playboy magazine-type sweet Marge (played by Valerie Perrine), a groupie calling herself “a Georgia peach pit”, eagerly navigates for newbie Junior the realm of racing, helping settle him in. (The motel desk clerk discounting Junior’s room is played by the film’s director Lamont Johnson.) Marge reels in Junior, revealing her pit of a past to him, which causes him to care about the vulnerable beauty, rather than raise a red flag. The young racing talent is ready to take on tough rivals for Marge’s affection and for winning races. Junior encounters a major roadblock in Burton Colt, the race sponsor Junior needs, who’s played smartly as cool and cocky as Junior himself by actor Ed Lauter. Might Junior walk off into the sunset with sexy Marge, and will he continue to do his own thing - or to succeed, will the maverick country boy have to succumb and tow the line are questions in the film. The Last American Hero is fast and fun, a film fit for teens and adults, and more than just action, excitement, and entertainment, the movie shows the human struggle of a race car driver, which is metaphorical for the rugged individualism of Americans – the striving to live life one’s own way, by one’s own hard work and integrity.

A man of character, Junior steps on the accelerator of life. With no professional driving experience, and needing to raise money so his mother will survive and his father have privileges in prison, Junior pushes his way into the world of racing.

Like Mr. Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence says, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

His aggressiveness and cleverness on and off the track at the demolition derby fast gain him notice as a driver. Ned Beatty as realistic race track owner Hackel has a cocky and confident rising star on his hands that he’s reluctant to recognize.

The celebrated real-life driver Junior Johnson died at age 88 in December, 2019. In 2021 The Last American Hero should be screened for the vintage racing and the perennial American ideals of never sucking up, never giving up principles, and never stop striving for personal freedom.

Junior’s racking up wins, and his mother Geraldine Fitzgerald, sympathetic as Mrs. Jackson, worries for Junior’s safety. Ambitious Junior has no plans to wreck, but only to win.

LARRY QUINTAL It all began when Kirstie Quintal was 15 and wanted an old car to drive while in High School. She and her dad found a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger with 83,000 miles on the old slant six. The car was in a garage for over 15 years. Kirstie and her dad Larry restored the car together, and changed the color to sub lime green, but keeping the slant six. Needless to say Kirstie had the coolest car in High School, and her dad Larry was happy with the color because he could always find her. Years later, Larry and his friend Paul Braga owner of Paul’s Custom Exhaust of Taunton found a 1972 Dart Swinger powered by a 383 big block. One of the men who bought and built the car in 1974 for NE Drag had passed away suddenly at a young age, and the car was sold and not seen for 20 years. One day Larry was at an auto parts store and came out to find a girl crying with joy, it was the daughter of the original owner standing on the side of the car. Larry asked what was wrong, she said this was my dad’s car, I have been looking for it for over 20 years, She just happened to be driving by and spotted a red Dodge Dart hoping it was the one. 12 squad car looks like a real LAPD car of the same year model.

By ROB MAY and JIM GAULDIN From Emergency! in December to Adam-12 in January is a great crossover transition. Adam-12 featured Los Angeles police officers Pete Mallory and Jim Reed for seven seasons. In similar fashion of our previous month’s articles, Rob May in the Southwest near Los Angeles reaches out to the Northeast to find Jim Gauldin of Danville, VA. Jim owns this fantastic 1971 Plymouth Satellite Adam-12 squad car.

The car itself needed a basic restoration. The entire car was gutted, with the engine compartment and interior stripped bare, the doors, hood, trunk, fenders, and glass removed, the engine compartment sandblasted, rust repair and body repair done by James Smith at Smith Paint & Body in Callands, Virginia. The interior was done in the correct color/pattern to match the Adam-12 car using fabric from SMS Auto Fabris, a dash pad from Just Dashes, reproduction vinyl flooring from ACC, and headliner material from Legendary. The instruments were restored by Auto Instruments

Jim had a soft spot for old Mopars since he was a kid. “My dad gave two co-workers a ride to Richmond, VA, where they purchased 1968 and 1969 Plymouth Furys from the Virginia State Police surplus auction. On the way home, those guys would hang back, then punch the Plymouths, rocketing past my dad’s Buick and making the sound that high compression 440s make at full song. I was hooked.” Around that time, season 4 of Adam12 hit the airwaves, with Reed and Malloy riding a brand new 1971 Satellite. Jim had never forgotten the Adam-12 1971 Satellite, and for years he’d toyed with the idea of building a replica. “After I retired, I decided to pull the trigger.” Very few examples survived, and the few that came up for sale were rust buckets. In November of 2015, he finally found one three hours from his home. “Even this car had some rust issues, and I’d have preferred to spend more money on a more solid car, but this was the best one I’d seen in 18 months of looking.” This car was aged with a very tired 318, a worn-out suspension, and ratty interior. Building this car went way beyond an automotive restoration. “I had to get the Adam12/LAPD aspect of the car correct, and that was the part that I knew nothing about when I went into this project.” The only reference Jim had (at first) was watching the TV show, sometimes paused and advanced frame by frame to get every detail. “I was very fortunate to meet people through Facebook who had intimate knowledge of the equipment used in these cars, and they helped me immensely.” Jim learned that Jack Webb was a stickler for details, and that he demanded that the cars on Adam-12 look exactly like real LAPD cars. Webb purchased the same make and model of cars for Adam-12 that LAPD bought in any given year and upfitted them with the same equipment used by LAPD, often with the help of LAPD. So, an accurate Adam-

radio head used by LAPD was made especially to LAPD spec, and these are quite rare, so Jim has a different one that looks very similar. The correct hot sheet desks are unicorns today, so a fellow named Tim Howard (who built his own 1968 Belvedere Adam-12 car) designed and sells copies that are very close. The lights on the roof of this car (Trio Sales model T2) actually originated at LAPD. “After years of searching, I recently obtained the correct shotgun lock. Soon, I will fabricate the shotgun rack and will add the requisite Ithaca shotgun.” LAPD cars had no radio for music. One item that was difficult to find was the radio delete dash bezel in the correct low-trim (without wood grain). At first glance, the engine looks stock. The most glaring modification is the obvious addition of electronic ignition. “Since I drive this car everywhere, I did make some concessions to originality.” The engine is a 383 block with a 440 crankshaft, yielding 432 cubic inches. It is a quench engine with aluminum Stealth heads from 440 Source. The intake manifold is an Edelbrock Performer with the logo removed. “I primed the engine with self-etching primer (so the paint would stick to the aluminum) and painted it with a paint gun, using paint from Roger Gibson Restoration.” To date, no one has spotted the fact that there are aluminum heads hidden under the huge air cleaner and air conditioning components. The transmission is a 4-speed overdrive unit with lockup converter from Silver Sport Transmissions. “With a 3.23 rear gear, I can cruise in the fast lane with the new cars, and the engine humms along at low RPM.” Hidden under the car, the only clue that something is amiss with the transmission is a modern dipstick with a locking lever. “Fortunately, the A/C hoses camouflage this nicely and no one has noticed.” More improvements are in the suspension. “I rebuilt the front suspension with quality Moog parts, upgraded the torsion bars to 1.03” units from PST, added 6-leaf rear springs, swapped the tired original steering box with a Stage-3 unit from Firm Feel, and installed adjustable Koni shocks on the front and double-adjustable QA-1 units on the rear.” In order to get the desired amount of positive caster (often a problem on Mopar B-bodies of this era), it has tubular upper control arms from Firm Feel. Front brakes are stock 1973-up 11.75” discs, and rears are 11” X 2.5” drums. Large Helwig sway bars are installed on both ends. “All these improvements are hidden, and the car drives great for a heavy car of this era. It tracks straight, corners flat, handles bumps without fanfare, has plenty of brakes, and is generally a pleasure to drive.”

The Year in Review 2020, a year that many wished never happened. A year that brought shutdowns, the closing of businesses that had been around for decades, and a divide between neighbors across the country. A year that canceled most car shows, cruise-ins and indoor car festivities. A year that sent the collector car market on a spiral path that mirrored most of the world economy.

The collector car market saw a steady decrease in value as the year progressed, hitting the peak of the decline in September before a rebound back up to close out the year. Many auctions were canceled early in the season and were highly modified from the norm to pivot and be able to re-open and resume business even though the decreased attendance hurt sales as expected. But not all in 2020 was a negative, the new 2020 Corvette Stingray mid-engine vehicle was released and even before dealerships had them, the first rolled across the auction block at Barrett-Jackson and fetched $3,000,000.00 with all proceeds going to the Detroit Children’s fund! The Bullitt Mustang GT reemerged two years ago and finally in 2020 sold at auction for a whopping $3,740,000.00 at Mecum Kissimmee in January. Manufacturers and dealers of restoration parts and upgrade components saw record sales and many backlogged orders as most Americans were confined to the garage and finally had time to finish up the restoration or improvements they had been working on! I personally am still waiting on interior seat covers I ordered last February!

Most importantly, many spent time with family and friends working in the garage on their cars. Families cruised along back roads and enjoyed road trips. Car clubs and local car show organizers were creative and put together cruises that stopped at small local businesses and supported them. A sense of community was returned to local enthusiasts and restored how this hobby once started- cruising, talking, and turning wrenches together was once again embraced. While I hope for a 2021 that brings back large car shows and large cruises, with events at tracks at full capacity, I hope we all can remember the time we spent this year and embrace it as we move forward and hopefully, just maybe, create a spark for the next generation of enthusiasts! Etch sees another off ramp exit sign just ahead of him and he realizes that he needs to get off of the highway and return to the backroads of New England as soon as possible. The bullets fired from the police officers revolvers have stopped. For now. The captain turns to his police officers and stares at them in disgust. “Why are we trying to stop this guy? What in the hell did he do wrong? We should just mail him some traffic violations in the mail and put an end to this crap!” One of the other police officers replies, “We can’t do that. The Feds want him behind bars and his classic muscle car towed into the nearest scrap yard.” Captain, “Really? Then why aren’t they out here trying to catch him?” The police officers head back to their vehicles and sit confused about what they need to do next to stop the Outlaw GTO and its driver. Meanwhile, Etch cruises down the backroads of Rhode Island heading to a not yet decided destination. The sun is shining high above him and his jet black GTO on a beautiful day.

Etch reflects back to a simpler time when he could wash and wax his muscle car GTO before heading out to an area car show or cruise night. Make a quick stop at the local Dunkin’ to pick up iced coffees and muffins for himself and his friends waiting for him to arrive on the scene. Etch would have a trunk full of Motorhead Magazines to pass out at these events to all of his friends published every month along with thousands of his kids safety coloring posters and products reminding kids and families to Buckle Up! for Safety. Classic Rock Radio Station, I-105.5 FM cranking on his car stereo playing all of his favorite classic rock songs on his road trips back and forth to every cruise night and car show. Now, he has to drive for his life in his wanted muscle car. Etch decides it is time to find a gas station and fill up his gas tank before he is driving on just fumes. He would also like to check his oil and fluids if it is at all possible before being spotted by law enforcement searching the area for him and his wanted GTO.

Etch eventually rolls up to a full service gas station and the attendant rushes outside to put gas in the classic muscle car. Another attendant heads out the front door of the gas station to check out the ride pulling into the gas station. A couple of teenaged girls are following close behind. “Wow! This car is beautiful. Haven’t seen one of these on the road in quite some time,” said one of the gas station attendants. “We used to work on these old school muscle cars in shop class at our high school but they stopped that awhile back saying we need to focus on new computer tech and electric cars and trucks coming in the future. I felt physically sick when our shop teacher told our class that was the future of automobiles in the USA.”

project builds 2021 By JIM WEICHERDING It’s that time of year again folks! It’s January and it is winter season over the next few months. A lot of us know what that means... Project Builds. Most of you already know about one of my features because you are reading Motorhead Magazine every month that I often focus articles on my READERS RIDES owner vehicles during the year. But now, it’s winter time, and things change when it comes to content and what’s happening in the real world of our automotive passion. Over the next few months I will be looking for anyone working on their own projects during the months of February, March and April, 2021. Doesn’t matter what it is. Pontiac, Chevy, GM, Mo-

par or Ford, or other, it does not matter. We do not discriminate here at Motorhead Magazine when it comes to our readers and what they would like to read and see in photos. It could even be a custom built motorcycle, or a Monster truck, or speed boat. If it has a motor in it, I’ll write a feature article about it. Antique fire trucks, refurbished police cars or even an old school military vehicle are going to find an open door sign on our wall this coming year. God only knows how hard the past year has been for struggling Americans but I find it hard to believe that Washington DC. and those that are in office don’t know, or even fully understand, how hard this Covid crisis has been on most of us over the past 10 months. I do know that these same politicians are millionaires deciding the fate of struggling Americans and while I write this feature article no stimulus package has been agreed upon by both parties yet leaving millions of us not knowing what we will be able to do to survive. protecting families and businesses. Our economy is heading into the toilet. I feel bad for restaurant owners and their employees. They are hit hard by all of this too. Meanwhile, 3 companies develop a Covid vaccine and the CDC and health departments tell us that millions of dosages will be available across the USA soon for every American. Now, that is stalled and nowhere near happening the way they told us it would happen.

“Protecting the future of our children,” said one senator, after blocking a much larger stimulus check for every American. He is worth more than $10,000,000 and passes legislation to give rich corporations trillions of dollars in tax breaks. He blocks our stimulus checks with a real amount impact on our lives for an insult amount that puts every American in the USA in harms way. Give us scraps and say, “Here, survive on this.” I’m sure the IRS will tax all of us because of any Covid relief checks and any business loans paid out to owners trying not to go under and close their doors forever, will be paying steep interest rates and late payment fees for months, if not years, from now. Hey, Congress! Stop the bull crap petty party fighting and bickering and save America! Hey, millionaire politicians! This is our reality as working class Americans. Wake Up, America! Or, this will be the new face of America and no mask will be required!
