Rhett Gardner Named Race Director at New England Dragway By MARK LaBRANCHE

Rhett Gardner is the New Race Director at New England Dragway. To say that everyone is happy would be an understatement. This is only one man’s opinion, but I am not alone! I believe NED has lost some racers over the years for several reasons. This is not a slam on anyone at the track or the track at all. If you know me, you know I LOVE New England Dragway. This is just knowledge and information I have been told directly from several racers over the years and it is no secret. Do I believe that? Maybe, unfortunately we have had some different issues in the past. Some even trying to get our second home sold from under us. But that did not happen, and a message was sent out LOUD and CLEAR. OUR SECOND HOME IS NOT FOR SALE!! Again, I don’t look back in the rear-view mirror. What is behind me is of no concern. I do remember and hope it doesn’t happen again. I would be kidding myself to think it was not going to happen time after time. Offers will keep coming, but I truly believe the stockholders will keep doing the right thing. We must support NEW ENGLAND DRAGWAY, our future is in our hands! I look forward to the future and don’t dwell on the past. I believe that Rhett is one huge link to the future for NEW ENGLAND DRAGWAY. Why? You might ask. Simply said, his knowledge and especially his knowledge of prepping 10| Motorhead Magazine - August 2022

a track. This young man (27) has it all. Rhett Gardner is from South Carolina. He was always around a racetrack. His Dad was always Grudge racing. Rhett was driving a Jr. Dragster. When he was old enough, he started to drive his Dad’s Grudge car. Eventually, Rhett moved up from racer to General Manager of Darlington Dragway. Darlington Dragway was owned by Russell and Dee Miller at that time. This remarkable young man knows how to run a track between the walls and then some. He knows all aspects of the drag racing world. It does not matter what kind of prep because he has already done that and been there. Rhett said, “I am excited to be a part of New England Dragway and look forward to doing my part in helping this historic track grow.”

New England Dragway hit the lottery in my opinion. These types of people are just not around. Rhett told me, “I was the General Manager at Darlington for over 4 years and decided I’d step away for a little while so my fiancé could do her residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. Right before we moved, I heard that New England Dragway was looking for a race director and had a fellow racer mention me to them. Once they called and set up a meeting with me, I knew I couldn’t just walk away from the racing world. Also, once I arrived at NED, I fell in love with the facility.” Rhett also knew he could not stay away from Drag Racing. In my opinion (writer) radial tires are becoming old hat Continued Next Page

and Grudge Racing and No Prep is the future. Radial tire racing has two or three big events in one year and that is it. No one runs them anymore. It is slowly going downhill just like x275. Grudge, Small tire, and No Prep racing are the future for here and now. Grudge and small tire are having races every single week. Rhett knows this all too well.

of all the functions and what goes on day to day. They are now more invested in the team. Again, just my opinion, but I will tell you everyone seems happy and now feel like one. The TEAM is getting closer and closer together. That means happy people, people who want to do more, feel better about themselves and more invested in what they do. They want to be there! To me this is priceless.

He has done it on a track that was not half as good as New England Dragway. What people don’t know is that Rhett worked with Jake Green. Jake has flown all over the world to prep track. These two young men know their stuff. Working with one of the best on prepping a track for years is priceless!

I believe this has been there all along, but I feel Rhett has gained their RESPECT. Our new Race Director jumps in the tractor and drags the track, sprays the glue himself. A huge word that carries a lot of weight. That says a lot, and this was the missing link in the chain that drives the prep and the glue to bring the TEAM together (no pun

I loved hearing Rhett tell me personally, “Mark, this place is gold, it has the perfect foundation to make for a great track.” I don’t know about everyone else but when I heard that I was just blown away. Rhett has gained respect from co-workers and more importantly, the racers. This is exactly what our second home needed after the rough winter ordeal we went through. A new beginning has arrived, just in time too, in my opinion. I said to myself, we finally have what we’ve been missing. A racer who knows what we want and can prep like down south. This kid knows exactly what we need. What else is there, nothing more needed. What excites me the most is how this young man has the knowledge to keep the prep up in changing conditions. I was at NED for one of Rhett’s first rentals. 8 cars where there that day, 6 cars ran their personal best. I just wrote it off as a good day, maybe even being lucky. Then it happened again and again. It was no fluke; he is the real deal. I watched him for a rental again, and I will never tell you what he does. But what I will tell you is that he knows his stuff. Here is just one example. A couple of Sundays ago, the track temp was about 145 degrees f. You would expect the track to be slick and not the best track to race on. You would expect slippery and junk. Once again Rhett shows what he brings to the table. We were not expecting much traction to be honest. Well, you and I would be wrong. Sure, anyone can prep the starting line, but the 100 to 300 feet out is called the sweet spot. From 100 to 300 was exactly like the starting line. This happed time after time. Like everyone else, we were all shocked and happy. Word is getting out fast, The Prep at New England Dragway is back and better than before. But this is also a TEAM effort. Just like the rest of the track, everyone has a part in this. This is not just one person. A leader between the walls, a mentor and team player has landed in our lap. We now have what I feel has been missing. Again, this is not slamming the past, we just now have the knowledge and a leader to do it consistently. Rhett will tell you I am just one person, the people have been great and welcomed me with open arms. The crew here is unreal and together we will do great things. WE do this together. The TEAM does this, not just me. Rhett has been cross training people also. This brings everyone together. More importantly, they understand more

intended). The personal touch and bonding with racers and our SECOND HOME family. Personality has a lot to do with how people are reacting to this new feeling. It is all good and positive. NED had posted this about Rhett, and I honestly think this just confirms what we all feel... “Rhett Gardner traveled to us from Darlington Dragway. He has many years of experience in the drag racing industry as both a racer and management. Notably, Rhett was involved in multiple drag racing projects. Jr Dragster Driver Training at Darlington sitting on the board of Kids Racing 4 A Cause and presiding over Drag Racers Association of Florence (D.R.A.F). Rhett attended Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina where he majored in chemistry and minored in business Administration. We are all so happy to have Rhett joining the Team and are excited to work with him to sustain and improve the track we all love. “ If this does not get your blood flowing, I don’t know what will. Your SECOND HOME is coming full circle with a united TEAM. The chips are falling together. We need to support the track in any way we can. Street nights, Saturday and Sundays or any event will help. Our SECOND HOME is back, improvements, personnel and the family feeling is better than ever. Please join me and everyone else and welcome our New Race Director, Rhett Gardner. NEW ENGLAND SUMMER BUCKS

DFR Promotions delivers New England Dragway’s biggest payouts ever!! ED YESSAIAN For many years, New England bracket racers have traveled all over the country for big money races. And the question was always asked“why can’t we do that?” Well on the weekend of July 15- 16th 2022, DFR Promotions, answered that age old question with a blockbuster event that boasted the biggest payouts in New England Dragway history, The event coordinators, who just happened to be some of the nation’s best bracket racers themselves, were Cam Murray, Kyle Murray, Kyle Genualdo, Brandon Karaguezian, and Brandon Miller. The event was split into two days, a Friday night shootout series and a Saturday Big Money Bracket with both Box and No Box classes to be contested. Some of the biggest names in the Northeast showed up, including two NHRA World Champions and several multi-time track champions. It was literally the All-Star Game for New England Dragway!! With big checks on the line, here are the men and women that cashed in…

FRIDAY NIGHT Friday night was split into two categories- Super 16 and Elite 8 with divisions in each category for Box and No Box. Every single round had people on the edge of their seats with a few new faces heading to the Winner’s Circle… SUPER 16 NO BOX- Joe Henderson in the “Impatience” Nova would take the win after World Champion Nelson Belot Jr went red at the start. SUPER 16 BOX- It was door car vs 12| Motorhead Magazine - August 2022

dragster as Justin Mason went up against Mike Caron in a very close one. At the end it was Justin Mason by .009 to add some weight to his wallet. ELITE 8 NO BOX- Two crowd favorites would head to the final dance as AJ Cowing and Franny Mason went head-to-head. Cowing would go .001 red to hand Franny the check for 3000.00. ELITE 8 BOX- Another door car vs dragster final as Super Pro Legend Ray Knight would battle Alan Elliott, with Knight cashing in after Elliott would break out by .001

SATURDAY’S MAIN EVENT With over 100 cars per class, it was clear that DFR Promotions had nailed their premonition that the track needed this event!! This was going to be a day that no one would ever forget. Literally everyone in the new England Dragway Points series made an appearance hoping for a chance to etch their name in the history books. Two classes were contested and at the end of a very long day, two Champions stood with handfuls of cash… NO BOX- Two of the biggest names in Pro Eliminator racing would stage in the final. World Champion Dan Caissie would take on multi-time Champion Jared Kinson, with Kinson taking the win and the 5000.00 payday. BOX- Jackson Worters predicted his victory earlier in the week, dedicating this day to his late

friend Sean Serra. Worters would first have to contend with Bob DiNino, who had a great day leading up to the final but the at the stripe it was Worters collecting the 7500.00 payout which he said was nice “… but today wasn’t about money, it was about Sean”.

Thank you to ALL of our sponsors listed below:

In addition to the many sponsors, we would like to extend our gratitude to the amazing staff of New England Dragway for their unbelievable efforts. Through late nights, extremely hot temperatures, and non-stop action, these men and women kept this show on track seamlessly. THE CRANSTON CAT Jay Pjojian Keeps Grandma’s 85 Cougar Purring ED YESSAIAN For as long as I can remember my grandmother always had a Mercury Cougar in the garage. Obviously, I don’t recall what she owned before my arrival in 1974 but she was a fan of the Cougar since its introduction in 1967. The first Cougar I do recall was her 1979 Cougar, finished in bright red and powered by a 5.0L V8. That was the one thing that all of her cars had in common, they had to have the V8!! I remember so many times being out in the driveway with a wash bucket, helping my uncle/Godfather washing that car for his mother. But unfortunately, tragedy struck that poor cat and it randomly burst into flames, right in my grandmother’s driveway. She was devastated and immediately set out to Tasca Lincoln Mercury to see the 1985 model year of Mercury Cougar. At 16| Motorhead Magazine - August 2022

the time my father had a 1980 Cougar XR-7 which she liked but the next generation was

T

home to her garage. I was instantly a fan of the new car, especially once I learned that it shared its underpinnings with the Mustang GT of that era. A 5.0-liter V8 once again resided under the hood and a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission backed that up. By today’s standards the Cougar’s 140hp isn’t too impressive but in 1985 the car held its own and was very quiet and comfortable to drive. My grandmother kept this car garaged and meticulously maintained. The car received one repaint in the early 2000’s and maintains that flawless finish to this very day. When my grandmother passed away in April of 2012 the Cougar remained garaged at her home until it was recently awakened from its slumber by my little cousin Jason Pjojian. Jason was no stranger to Ford Performance vehicles, as his father (my God father) has had five different Mustangs through the years. Jason’s first Mustang was an immaculate 1997 SVT Cobra which he still has to this day. However, the Fox-Bodied Cougar had always piqued his interest as it lay silently in our grandmother’s garage, eagerly awaiting the day that it would once again be set free. Eventually Jason would purchase his own home with a two-car garage, which would finally give him a place to work on his cars. Having always been fascinated by the Cougar, and dreaming of the many modifications he would perform, he finally brought the car home. Jason’s first stop with the car was Southern NH Undercar in Hampstead, NH for a custom X-pipe and cat-back exhaust system. Not only

did this wake up the car but it gave it the growl it needed to let people know he was on the prowl. The next project he plans to tackle is an 8.8 rear end swap with a 3.73 gear set, which should definitely make the car a blast to drive. From there he plans on doing a complete five lug swap which will allow him to bolt on the brand-new chrome 97 Cobra wheels he has in his garage. Long term plans include building a more potent 5.0-liter engine with decent heads, Cam, and intake.

Jason also toyed with the idea of a 5-speed swap somewhere down the line. Because the car is based on the same platform as the 7993 Mustangs, the possibilities are endless!! In closing Jason wanted to thank his friends at www.CoolCats.net for the unbelievable amount of technical advice and support. If you’re a fan of the 1983-88 Mercury Cougar, this is the place to go for the answers to any question you can come up with.

Jon McKennedy Rockets To Clash at Claremont Win in Whelen Modified Tour 150

By SOUZA MEDIA

CLAREMONT, N.H. – Jon McKennedy picked a perfect time to return to NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Victory Lane. For the first time since 2018, the Massachusetts racer parked in Victory Lane at Claremont Motorsports Park on Friday night in the Tour return to Claremont for the first time in 15 years. McKennedy’s victory allowed him to close the gap even further to the top of the championship standings as he looks for his first career Whelen Modified Tour title in

2022. It was the Chelmsford, Massachusetts, drivers second career series win. In the process of finishing fourth, Matt Hirschman also earned car owner Roy Hall the inaugural $5,000 prize in the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup, besting Ron Silk’s team for the award. The Clash at Claremont 150 was part of a full night at Claremont, which also included four house divisions as part of the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Racing Series. “This was way overdue,” McKennedy said. “I had a really good deal with Tommy Baldwin Racing and we had so many seconds and poles with Tommy. We were always in contention, but just couldn’t get that W the last few years. We’re back [in Victory Lane] and it’s awesome.” McKennedy passed Mayhew Tools polesitter Jake Johnson for the lead early and was in prime position to seal the deal over the final laps, driving away to his second career Whelen Modified Tour win. Behind McKennedy, points leader Ron Silk held onto his lead with a second-place finish, while Johnson settled for third spot driving the Boehler Racing No. 3.

Stuff like that is appreciated, and I talked to my car owner [Roy Hall] about [the Granite State Short Track Cup] and he said this is something we should support.” Three-time series champion Justin Bonsignore finished sixth, followed by Tommy Catalano, Brian Robie, six-time champion Doug Coby and Matt Kimball. In Claremont NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Racing Series action, Nick Houle rolled to the feature win in the Mini Stocks, while Colton Martin rocketed to the Pure Stock feature win. THE 2022 DEREK GALLIGAN MEMORIAL AWARD PRESENTED TO RICK STETSON By MARK LaBRANCHE The Derek Galligan Memorial Award is very special at New England Dragway. It is not given out to just anybody, it is only given out to people who deserve it, and a group of people review the nominees. The elite group of people we refer to as the 5 Elders are Old Time Garage (Sam Hurwitz), Bob Thompson BT Contract Service (Father of Topbike), Quality Components (Roy Resendes), Tom’s Auto Repair (Tom Galligan) and Rick Stetson of Harry’s Machine Shop. New England Dragway’s management team also wanted this memorial to be presented. They were a big part of getting this all together but the final word comes from Yvonne Galligan. The recipients must meet certain criteria and meet them all, and that is not easy to do. What does one have to do to receive this prestigious award you ask? It is given to someone striving for the Pursuit of Excellence, Generosity and Dedication to the Sport of Motorcycle Drag Racing. You must be a good person, caring and show respect to your peers. Your 2022 Derek Galligan Memorial Award is Rick Stetson. Derek always looked up to Rick. He would ask Rick about the sport and schoolwork when he was in college. Derek always wanted to know more about drag bikes. Who better to learn from than Rick Stetson? Derek graduated from Madison in Wisconsin with a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering. There was a special bond between Rick and Derek that was very strong. There was a small memorial before the award was given out in honor of Tommy and Yvonne’s son Derek Galligan. This award is always given under the legendary tree by the gas shack. This tree is iconic to drag bike people. We all sit under this tree when it is a sunny hot day during the season. This is holy ground for several reasons. Right before a round, you will always see the riders under this tree for shade. More importantly, the brotherhood and family stick together. Derek was a very special person dedicated to Motorcycle Drag Racing. Special thanks to all the sponsors, Tommy Repair, Old Time Garage, Quality Components, BT Contract Service, Rick and Arlie Stetson and New England Dragway. Rick’s lovely wife Arlene supports him in everything he does as well. She is always there to support Rick. Where do you start when you try and describe Rick Stetson? Well, we would fill up Motorhead Magazine with all the details about him. Rick is a man who doesn’t talk a lot. When he does, people stop and listen to what he has to say. His years of knowledge go on and on. I will try to outline some of his accomplishments... Rick graduated high school in 1967. Then it all started. He went bought a new Honda 590 with an advertised top speed of a whopping 65 to 70 mph. Rick being Rick had to rip it apart and make it better. Stroked it to 125 and just had to put 160 carbs on it. He then bought a 1969 Triumph TR6R and traded it for a 1969 Bonneville. He decided to go to New England Dragway in 1970 with the Bonneville. His very first time and guess what? He won a trophy with the Bonneville. Rick went 13.9 @ 97 mph, and was hooked from that day forward. That became old technology and Rick needed the new inline 4 banger. So, he went out and bought a brand new Honda CB750. Back then it was not uncommon to race on the streets. Street racing was alive and well, and a group of friends went

to Cambridge riding out back behind Route 2 to Lexington. They would race up 1 mile to Belmont Hill. Rick was feeling pretty good, racing the panhead Harleys, and beating them to the top of the hill at 110 mph by 100 yards or so. But, yes there is a but here, the stroked Harleys were ahead of Rick by 100 yards. If you know Rick, you know he was not happy with this at all. The Honda was never stock after that night and Rick raced it for 10 years, breaking several records with several motor combinations in the Honda. In 1974 Rick had partnered up with Harry Payne to form Harry’s Machine Parts. This was the start of the motorcycle shop. No one was making parts for these bikes, so Rick wanted to make them himself. Being an innovator, Rick made the first overriding transmission (better known as the auto). Yes, Rick had done this and was the first to ever do so. He was not about making a pattern or all about ‘look what I did’. He just wanted to be the best he could be, period. Yes, Rick’s idea was quickly patterned by a two-person big name in the pro stock class. Their names will not be said but let’s make it very clear, Rick was the first to do this. Rick drove to Bradenton in the spring to test this new set up. In his own words, “I left in first gear and held my breath, hit second and it worked, I’ll be damned).” The motor was 970 and the old record was 10.25. At the end of the day Rick had dropped it down to 9.77 and was in the finals against AA/A (1270cc). He had to give the other rider a head start (handicapped based on

records). Rick unfortunately red lighted in the finals. In 1979 that same motor was now a 1055 and Rick then went to CA and set the B/A record @ 9.20 @ 142.63. In 1980 Rick went to NMRA Gainesville and entered Pro Comp which, at that time, was unlimited Draster gas dragsters. When they asked Rick, “why do you want to enter this class with a sit up 750 Honda?” Rick just said, “because I want to win.” Guess what, Rick won. That year turned out to be a battle between Geoff Masters who was sponsored by Wiseco riding a 1325 Kawasaki. Rick could hole shot him, but he would drive by at the 60-foot block. He does not like to lose. At the end of this year, Rick would have the #2 plate. In the winter of 1980 – 1981 Rick was going to fight fire with fire. He had had enough and built a 1325 cc big tire bike. Raced that bike with the #2 plate that the Honda had earned him. At the end of the 1981 season Rick had the #1 plate. Rick dominated the factor 4V motors so much that they set the motors back to 1260 cc. He said at the awards banquet that the smaller motors will still be faster. In 1982 guess what, Rick was right again. He was undefeated the entire season. In 1983 Rick again held the record at 8.35 158 mph (again set at Freemont). That year Pro Comp (NMRA) was invited to the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta and won the class and got

his first ever WALLY, #1. The undefeated streak continued until Rick went back to New England Dragway. There was a TV crew that was taping for a show and Rick ran into Bob Spina on a Nitro Harley. Spina had won that event. Rick still got the number one plate for the 3rd consecutive year and then retired from Pro Com.

work on the bike and did not tell Bob about his two-step invention. This was a huge undertaking; this would later be revolutionary in the sport of drag bike racing. Yes, Rick did this himself. He was not about making a pattern on his ideas. All Rick wanted to do is be the best he could be. Again, the same people who patterned Rick’s overriding transmission (auto) had also done a pattern on Ricks two-step invention.

Rick then decided to get his feet wet in NHRA Pro Stock Bike in 1984 to 1985, “I was going okay but when the other guys are sponsored by big bucks it is kind of hard.”

In 1987 at the Cajun Nationals Rick tried a new head but couldn’t get a grip, qualifying 16th. The event got rained out, delayed for a week. Rick flew home and got his triedand-true 1260 top end, put it in his suitcase and insured it for 10K. The airline said they couldn’t insure against damage, Rick said “okay, just don’t lose it.” He changed top ends and started going rounds. Terry Vance - the godfather of Pro Stock - crashed in front of Rick. That turned the racing world upside down. Everyone was in a tizzy. Rick turned to his crew person and said, “Everyone is really messed up - we can win this”. Rick beat Dave Schultz in the final. A battle that was dubbed “the

In 1986 Rick being Rick came up with yet another brilliant idea. Rick Stetson was the first ever to ever have a two-step limiter. Yes, you heard it right, Rick Stetson invented the first ever two-step limiter. Rick and Bob Thompson went to the Gator Nationals in 1986. Bob was the crew chief and Rick was riding the bike. They won the Gator Nationals. Rick beat Pizza John in the finals to win his #2 Wally. In the 80’s Rick won the Cooper award also. Little side note, Rick had done some R&D 26| Motorhead Magazine - August 2022

spaceship against the dinosaur.” Wally #3. Earned NHRA national #3 plate in 1987, #4 plate in ’88, #7 plate in ’89. In 1993 Rick built a new Pro Stock bike with Gast chassis and Katana body. He sold ‘Suzi’ (Rick’s own bike, a 1981 Suzuki) to Bob Brissenden. He raced and won in Top Gas for another 10 years. Sam Hurwitz drove the new Pro Stock bike as a teammate. He campaigned at NHRA National events, best outing was Brainard, qualified 2nd and went two rounds. In 1996 he eplaced Katana body with ’96 GSXR

750 body. Same engine and chassis with improved aero dynamics yielded 8 mph increase - did well in Pro Star Pro Stock. After Gainesville and runner up at Atlanta, built new 1325 piston and cylinder set for the Richmond race. All the NHRA riders went to Brainard. Rick was trying to take the Pro Star points lead by going to Virginia. He made the pistons too light and one broke in the burnout for the first qualifying pass. No spare engine! “Well, we are here, NOW what do we do?” The team turned and helped 3 customers that weekend. They all won! John Civitarese, in Super Comp, Pat Wise in Pro Stock and Gary Clark in Funny Bike. That Pro Stock motor was never put back together again. That event started a 10-year partnership with Gary Clark, record after record and championships in 1996, ’97, ’98 and again in 2000. “In Gainesville we dropped the F/B to 6.45, a record that stood

for 8 years.” Gary and Rick continued to support F/B but through customers, Dan Allaire, Dan DeLeon and Geoff Pollard, to name a few. Continued to help friends and customers at home and away, traveling with them to spring and fall races at Valdosta, Acto and MIR. In 2006 Rick earned ‘Green Hat’ in ECTA 200 mph Club by going 211 on Dave Owens’ Hayabusa. In 2007 heought ‘Suzi’ back and spent a year restoring and reengineering. “I raced it at New

England Dragway in Top Bike and won 5 races.” In 2008 he went 222.1235 at Maxton on Dave Owens’ bike. In 2016 Rick was inducted to New England Dragway Hall of fame - first motorcyclist to be so honored. 2022 Awarded the Derek Galligan Memorial Award, I can personally say I am a proud owner of one of Ricks masterpieces, nicknamed the Chips bike. It was a stock GS1000E Suzuki and made into a big tire bike. This bike is like being shot out of cannon and straight as an arrow. This bike is so easy to ride. In the early 80’s Rick took in Roy Resendes stock

1881 GS1100 E bike. Made this into a Drag bike also. Little did anyone know that this local bike would do a lot of traveling all over the country. Roy and Bob have been a team for years. Again, just one of his masterpieces. The bike was an eye opener and represents Rick’s ability to make firstclass bikes. Rick also made a bike for himself. Called Suzie Q. I took this picture of Rick behind his bike a couple of years ago, not knowing Rick and Suzie Q had been together for over 50 years. Look at his smile, that says it all. No words are needed. Please salute Rick Stetson in all his achievements.

The Derek Galligan Award being the most important to Rick. What I will tell is there was not a dry eye at the presentation. The respect, honor and what Rick has done for all drag bike racers is simply amazing. People came to this presentation for Rick from all over. The bottom line is very clear and very simple… Rick may be a quiet man with little words. When you’re a LEGEND you don’t have to talk much. Your work, friends and your achievements speak for themselves. Rick has been and always will be RESPECTED in THE DRAG BIKE WORLD. Congratulations to RICK STETSON on the DEREK GALLIGAN MEMORIAL AWARD for 2022. Pictures by Mark LaBranche Media Creator of New England Grudge

GT

By James Pari Cars and racing have always been a big part of my life. I remember my first car was a white 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air, three on the tree with a 348 in it. It was so fast and a complete sleeper. I was able to get 85 mph in second gear aer some engine modifications. We had a bunch of car hops and such in and around Rhode Island. I would take it down to the Pike Elephant in East Providence and cruise the city looking for people to race. We would go up to Route 146 to race everyone knew that was the spot. At one time I had a beautiful 1964 Chevy SS with a 327 and twin 4 barrel carbs. That car was something special. It was with that car that I met my wife while Continued next page

cruising through Goddard Park in Warwick, RI. Seventeen years ago, a friend of mine pulled up to my front yard and offered to sell me this 1969 Mustang GT. It had a 351 Windsor engine that was running but needed work. I picked it up, did some research on it, found out who built the engine in it and then started to take it apart. It was a nitrous motor but I took the bottles out, cleaned it up and ran it on race fuel. The FX transmission was taken out and replaced with a C4. The rear end had 4:11 gears in it, which I switched out so that it is quick out of the hole and then just goes from there. The interior was an awful looking dark green and in need of replacement, so I gutted it, insulated the body and had it redone in all black. I pulled the dashboard out, replaced the gauges, and added a drag racing tach. I had the body painted Black Cherry Red, and added some custom pieces here and there. 36| Motorhead Magazine - August 2022

While looking around at swap meets one weekend I even came across the original GT wheels for it. I don’t race it as much anymore, as I just like to take it down to the pier, cruise and enjoy the car with my buddy Paul Vergason and his white 1970 Nova, cruising together many years and still living the dream.

Star-Studded Lineup Coming Out WATERFORD, Conn. – When the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series heads to New London-Waterford Speedbowl for the first time since 2016, many of the top stars in Modified racing are planning to compete for the big prize.

On Saturday, August 6, teams will head to the Shoreline oval for the Belltown Motors/Fowler’s Auto Wrecking 100 presented by CBYD 811. With a large field expected and a strong purse to cover the entire field, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest races in the history of the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series, and race fans are going to be there to support one of the biggest races at the Speedbowl in recent memory. NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series winner Ryan Preece, seven-time Waterford SK Modified champion Keith Rocco, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour points leader Ron Silk and former Whelen Modified Tour champion Todd Szegedy are just part of the early list of invaders.

Preece, who has a Camping World Truck Series win with David Gilliland Racing this season, will continue his return to the grassroots Modified division to compete in the special event. Rocco, who spends most of his time competing in the SK Modified division at Stafford Motor Speedway these days, is a proven Waterford winner and champion, and will be in contention to win the 100-lap race. Silk will take a break

Jake Johnson Scores First Modified Win at Star Speedway in SBM 125 XI

EPPING, N.H. – In only his fifth start with the Monaco Modified TriTrack Series, Jake Johnson joined an exclusive club. The nineteenyear-old from Rehoboth, Mass., survived a series of late-race restarts to post his first-ever Tour-type Modified victory in Saturday July 23rd’s SBM 125 XI at Star Speedway.

“It’s a huge win for me,” Johnson said, “but you know, it’s a huge win for everyone.”

Johnson withstood challenges from Woody Pitkat and Max Zachem to earn the win, becoming the fifth different winner of the Epping, N.H. bullring’s signature Modified event.

Thunder Road winner Chase Dowling started from the front row and swapped the early lead with Johnson before taking control of the event. With points leader and six-time SBM 125 winner Matt Hirschman mired deep in traffic early, Dowling had an opportunity to capitalize in the points. But as Dowling struggled to clear lapped traf-

fic, Johnson made a bold move to take the lead, trapping the Connecticut star behind slower cars for a few laps.

Vapor honing / blasting is a metal surface cleaning and refinishing process that restores surfaces and efficiently removes contaminants. The process is known as wet blasting, vapor honing, liquid honing, or dustless blasting. The vapor blasting process utilizes pressurized water and abrasive blast media to clean and finish a surface.

A lap-73 spin slowed the race for the first time, allowing the field to come to the pits. Hirschman emerged tenth, but officials held “Big Money Matt” one lap for a pit infraction, ending the Pennsylvanian’s charge. Matt Galko brought the field to green, keeping Dowling and Johnson at bay for a few laps. But on a lap-80 restart, Galko got stuck in the outside line, dropping through the field as Johnson took the lead back from Dowling. Zachem and Pitkat emerged as new threats for the podium, swapping second and third, but Johnson got away on the restarts before the two racers could settle into line. A heated battle just outside the top five ended with a spin with a few laps to go,

bunching up the field for one last restart. Zachem lined up alongside Johnson, but Johnson and Pitkat were able to clear Zachem for good as they sprinted to the checkered flag. Johnson, who made his Modified debut with a third-place finish at Seekonk Speedway in last October’s season-ending Haunted Hundred, capped off his transition to open-wheel racing with the hardfought win. Pitkat came up just short of nabbing his first Tri-Track win in seven years, while Zachem had a career night to come home third. Ryan Doucette raced his way to fourth in the final laps, while early leader

“It’s a huge win for me,” Johnson said, “but you know, it’s a huge win for everyone.” Dowling could do no better than fifth in the second half of the race. Anthony Nocella, Dylan Izzo in Bob Horn’s #50, Ronnie Williams, Austin Beers and Les Hinckley rounded out the top ten. The Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series will return to the track on Saturday, August 6 at New London-Waterford Speedbowl, for the first race at the coastal Connecticut oval since 2015. SUMMER GRILLIN’

JIM WEICHERDING It’s August folks!

We are six weeks into the summer season with plenty of time left before Fall arrives. Summer brings with it a lot of heat and humidity across the Northeast region of the country that can extend well into October if weather conditions favor these systems and patterns. When we think of summer grilling we imagine cheeseburgers, hot dogs, steak, chicken and spare ribs cooking on an open flame for that great barbecue taste. Add some potato, macaroni and pasta salads along with a variety of side dishes and we have a great summertime meal for our family and friends. When I think about summer grillin’ my mind also goes to all of those cool classic cars and trucks, muscle cars and hot rods I see at area car shows,

Automobile grills are incredibly attractive and appealing. Especially, when that grill is featured on any nostalgic vehicle from the fifties and sixties. design glory. Growing up, I remember seeing plenty of these grill types and headlights featured on fifties and sixties vehicles. During the light of day it was easy to identify the vehicle year, make and model by looking at the approaching grill. After so many times of seeing these grills and headlights during the day it became much easier to identify these vehicles even at night without the sun helping to light the way. Pitch black and only having the glimmer of grill chrome and headlights I could still tell you the year, make and model of any vehicle cruisin’ down any street, roadway and highway when I was a kid. I have always had a passion for automobiles throughout my life. Especially, muscle cars and cool trucks.

the automotive world.

The questions I am often asked by automotive enthusiasts I come in contact with at area car shows and cruise nights often relate to the possible end of classic cars and trucks hobby, culture and lifestyle across America in the not-so-distant future. Outrageous gas prices, the push for electric vehicles and increased difficulty finding parts for our older model vehicles is not going unnoticed by anyone involved with

The only real thing I concern myself with is whether this classic car and truck hobby, culture and lifestyle will go out like antique vehicle stockpiles showing up with record numbers at salvage yards and old farm fields nationwide or will it all come to an end like the dynamic and explosive conclusion of the movie Vanishing Point. Will all of this go away with a whimper or a Big Bang? It’s obviously coming down the roadway at one point or another and there isn’t really much any of us can do about it. WATER DAMAGE MITIGATION FIRE, SMOKE & SOOT DAMAGE MOLD REMEDIATION RECONSTRUCTION & BOARD UPS BIO HAZARD, TRAUMA & HOARDING REMEDIATION • DOCUMENT RESTORATION • LARGE LOSS RECOVERY

“DAI Services Commercial, Industrial & Residential Properties” THE WATER RESTORATION PROCESS

1. Inspection & Assessment An initial and thorough inspection of your property is completed to assess the extent of the damage. This will identify and eliminate safety hazards, and determine a category of water damage and class of intrusion.

2. Water Removal/Extraction Liquid water is vacuumed, mopped, squeegeed, and/or otherwise “forcefully” removed from the structure. Any damaged and/or contaminated contents and material are removed from the affected area.

4. Cleaning Soils and debris must be removed to expedite the drying process contaminated materials, surfaces, and content that can be restored require cleaning. 5. Reconstruction Demoed or removed and discarded materials are replaced or rebuilt - such as drywall, flooring, and insulation. Detailed cleaning completes the process.

3. Drying Disruptive. These methods involve removing wet items, injecting air, or perforating surfaces. Aggressive: Used when contamination and damage are not concerns. Air Movement: Promotes fast drying of surfaces and provides air circulation. Dehumidification: Reduces the amount of moisture content in the air.

WATER DAMAGE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A VERY SERIOUS MATTER FOR PROPERTY OWNERS – IT CAN DESTROY CEILINGS, FLOORS, AND WALLS; AND IF NOT IMMEDIATELY TREATED, MAY LEAD TO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE AND MOLD GROWTH. MOST COMMON CAUSES OF WATER DAMAGE ARE: • PLUMBING FAILURES (PIPE LEAKS, CLOGS, AND BURSTS) • WATER HEATER LEAKS AND RELEASES • APPLIANCE FAILURES (DISHWASHERS, WASHING MACHINES, REFRIGERATORS, A/C UNITS, ETC.) • TOILET, SINK, AND TUB OVERFLOWS • ICE DAMS, ROOF LEAKS, STORM DRAIN AND GUTTER BACKUPS • NATURAL DISASTERS • SUMP PUMP FAILURES • SPRINKLER / FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM FAILURES

By ROB MAY and ALLEN DEAN Making its den in Hopkinsville, KY, this 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 lives with its owner, Allen Dean. Age 54. A Senior Network Technician working for Cornerstone Information Systems, he is married to Lisa Dean. They have 2 daughters, Kelli Taylor and Latisha Sexton, and have 5 grandkids. He has been in the IT industry for 20 years, but he has spent the 30 plus years in the construction industry. Allen has always loved classic cars with the cars of the 50s being his favorite. “My first car was a ‘71 Monte Carlo. My dad bought it for me in 1984 from a buddy who was needing some quick cash. For this reason, the ‘71 Monte is in my top 10 favorite cars of all time.” Allen’s second car was a 1968 Nova that was also purchased by his dad from a friend who needed money. “Dad said the car was his, but there was no way he was going to keep me away from that car.” In ‘86, Allen met his future wife Lisa Wheeler in Algebra class. “I fell head over heels for the pretty redhead that had just moved in from Marion, OH. We began dating, and I went to see her just about every evening. She lived a good 20 miles from me, and the Nova was very hard on gas, not to mention the close calls I had in it. So, I decided it was time to get something a little easier on gas.” He traded the Nova for a ‘73 Beetle. “The car was very nice and had been completely redone. Eventually, the bug began to ‘bug’ me because it 48| Motorhead Magazine - August 2022

KENTUCKY CAT

was just too darn slow.” For a while, he had been eyeballing a ‘70 Mustang that sat just inside of his hometown of Salyersville, KY. It was an Orange square back that had been sitting for several years with weeds around it. “I finally got up the nerve to inquire about the car. After convincing the very liberal minded owner that I wasn’t going to turn it into a stock car, he traded me even up for the Beetle.” Allen loved that car but eventually marriage came calling and his priorities changed once again. “It was several years before I owned another classic, but sometime around 1989, I bought a ‘54 Chevy from a coworker. It sat in my parent’s garage for a couple years then had to sell it because I needed the money. Getting rid of the ‘54 was hard as I knew it would be a very long time before I would get another. In early 2013 my life was financially stable enough to look for another classic. I found a ‘56 Buick Special, 2 door hardtop a few miles from my home.” He spent the next seven years working on restoring and upgrading the car. The car was very hard to get parts for, so he even bought a parts car and had it hauled all the way from Montana. “The pandemic again

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

changed things for me. Becoming very depressed during this time I had the thought that I was either going to go broke or die, whichever came first before I could get the car the way I wanted it. So, I sold that car along with the parts car in the fall of 2020.” Allen started to regret selling the Buick, and after about a month he started getting the itch again. “I had always loved the Cougars and the cool way the turn signals flashed.” He knew this time he needed to get something a little more complete than the ‘56 Buick had been. Initially wanting a ’67 to ‘70 Cougar, but those are a little pricey. Allen kept seeing this beautiful 1973 Cat on Facebook marketplace. He enquired about the car and arrived at a price with the owner, Rock Powers. “A cool side note: during our conversations, I discovered that the previous owner’s family was originally from my hometown of Salyersville, KY. In December of 2020, I went with a trailer and made the 6-hour trip from Hopkinsville, KY to Marysville, OH to get the Deep Orange Cat becoming the 4th owner.” Rock told him that his buddy bought the car used in 1975, and Rock acquired it from him in 2005. Rock began the

restoration of the car a few years later. For the most part, cosmetically, the car was complete. The issues were almost all mechanical. Allen ended up replacing the brake master cylinder, brake lines, fuel lines, u-joints etc. He also had to replace the motor mounts, but since the ‘73s had a capture mount, and they were only made in 73, he couldn’t find replacements. “I eventually learned some people had actually changed out the frame mounts for those from a ‘72 that way they could get a highly available mount from the local auto parts store.” After having some electrical issues at the taillights, he had to replace some wiring in the rear of the car. West Coast Classic Cougar (WCCC) has been a big help with info and parts. “The Cat, as you can see, has old school Cragars on it. It also boasts most of the original leather interior and only the seat bottoms have been redone.” WCCC had vinyl to match the Ginger leather. He left the 8-track in the car for nostalgia. “I added a cool horn from boom blasters.com that plays a Cougar growl when I push a button on my remote.”

Under the hood, the original 351 Cleveland with FMX transmission remains in place. The engine has never been rebuilt but has had some upgrades such as a Holley 600, Eldelbrock aluminum intake, headers, and Pentronix ignition. The transmission was rebuilt years ago, and one of the previous owners added a shift kit. The car has the original Ford 9” rear differential. The car has dual Flowmaster mufflers attached to 2.5 inch exhaust. “This Cougar is a very nice driver. I drive it occasionally to work but never on rainy days. It’s very comfortable to drive and floats along like a Cadillac although it’s really not much bigger than a 73 Mustang. When you mash on the gas, the 351 Cleveland with the headers along with the Flowmasters give this car a unique deep bellow.

It is not the irritating noise that you get from modern engines but a very deep growl. It really turns a lot of heads and can get you there quickly if you want.” “The Ginger colored leather interior as well as the way this car sounds really set it apart from anything I have seen. The addition of the boom blaster Cougar sound makes it a lot of fun at car shows. People love the Mercury because many have never seen one and those who have haven’t seen one in years. I call the ’71 - ‘73 (3rd Generation) Cougars the forgotten gems.” Allen attends car shows almost every weekend. Last year, the Cat won 2nd place at the Cadiz, KY car show.

MOTORHEAD MANIA! By PAUL GARCIA

As soon as Motorhead Magazine publisher Louis Cicerone came off the track at R1, he exclaimed, “Addictive! Everyone has to try this!” You could tell, as he picked up speed each lap around the 1/3-mi track, he was in it to win it. The first time Cicerone had driven electric go-karts at R1 Indoor Karting in Lincoln, RI, he was already a maniac. Not in the sense he drove recklessly, far from it, but he was buzzing around faster and faster, determined to qualify for the High Speed Club. Coming very close, with only about 2 seconds to shave off his best lap time, in another visit or two and he’d likely qualify for Speed 4, an increase from 35 to 45mph maximum kart speed. For safety, all racers on the track have the same speed limit. The High Speed Club meets weekly on Tuesday nights Motorhead Magazine Publisher Lou Cicerone with Asociate Andrea Edwards at R1 Karting. for two hours of exclusive Speed 4 racing, but there are many opportunities for all Speed 4 races. There likely seen outdoor, loud kart tracks anywhere from the Wisconsin Dells to is even a Junior High Speed Club Orlando. It could make karting a little unapproachable for the uninitiated. In for Speed 4 racers under age 16. Rhode Island, R1 definitely has the fastest karts around all of New England. With 45Nm torque electric motors there’s no hesitation or chugging when R1 is one of the only tracks you take off from a cold start or step on the accelerator on a straightaway. around that has junior racing. Being super-low to the ground increases your perception of the speed too. There are about 32 adult karts The 7-minute heat is about 4x longer than a typical steel roller coaster, but and 10 junior karts. Family races your heart will be pounding for 10 minutes after you return to the pit, just that include juniors are run at like it would after looping a coaster. Speed 2. Kids as young as 6 years old can race, but they must be And that’s the addiction Cicerone was talking about. It’s a thrill ride, in a at least 45 inches tall. Everyone different jacket than you might be accustomed to, but still getting your drives their own kart, no twoheart racing. Part of it is that you’re wrestling to control this powerful seaters. In our brief chat before machine with manual steering, part is the competition with the other racers, getting on the track, I heard a and part is being daring enough to risk a turn at high speed to shave more story from someone in line about time off your lap. You’ve got it coming three ways. If you really get addicted, high school kids being afraid R1 will sell you 100 races in bulk, for a fraction of what single races would to drive. It was a little surprising to us motorheads. I guess it’s not the days cost. I asked. There really are people who buy 100 races at a time. Or if you when every 15-year-old is eagerly awaiting their ability to get a learner’s have up to fourteen motorhead maniacs you want to race with, you can rent permit and get out on the road. the track for exclusive use and do things like run it in the reverse direction, do an endurance race, or something else. There’s even a winner’s podium The suggestion that karting could be a safe environment for teens to learn with medals and confetti if you book a big group. driving basics and gain some confidence and not risk denting your family car sounded pretty interesting. Since the track is built in a way that if you It’s pretty much guaranteed Cicerone will be back on the R1 track soon. And let go of the wheel and stepped on the gas, your kart would run the whole it’s a certainty he’ll be welcome as a fellow thrill-seeker. Karting isn’t the only track sliding against the retaining wall, there’s no real danger of going off thing to do at R1. They have an axe throwing bar, an interactive darts bar, the track. Not that anyone would recommend driving a kart that way, but an arcade, restaurant, and a participatory challenge game called TimeZone, the track is designed for safety. There’s no bumping allowed, and if there’s in a 90,000sf space open about 13 hours a day, 7 days a week. About 80% a crash, the track crew will remotely pause the race to get karts facing the of racers book in advance, especially on weekends, but there are plenty of right way again before anyone gets T-boned. other team challenges to enjoy if you walk in and have to wait for track time. Next time maybe owner and race car driver Mike Hezemans will be visiting Okay, that’s enough of the safety stuff, let’s get back to the mania! Some and Motorhead Magazine’s Cicerone can have a throw-down kart race. You people might think that go karts are for roughnecks. ON CRUISE CONTROL Speed control existed in early automobiles such as the Wilson-Pilcher in the early 1900s. They had a lever on the steering column that could be used to set the speed to be maintained by the engine. In 1908, the Peerless included a governor to maintain the speed of the engine through an extra throttle lever on the steering wheel. Peerless successfully used a flyball governor. They advertised their system as being able to “maintain speed whether uphill or down”. A governor was used by James Watt and Matthew Boulton in 1788 to control steam

engines, but the use of governors dates at least back to the 17th century. On an engine, the governor uses centrifugal force to adjust throttle position to adapt the speed of the engine to different loads (e.g. when going up a hill). Modern cruise control (also known as a speedostat or tempomat) was invented in 1948 by the blind inventor and mechanical engineer Ralph Teetor. He came up with the idea due to being frustrated by his driver’s habit of speeding up and slowing down as he talked.

A more significant factor in the developing of cruise control was the 35 mph (56 km/h) speed limit imposed in the US during World War II to reduce gasoline use and tire wear. A mechanism controlled by the driver provided resistance to further pressure on the accelerator pedal when the vehicle reached the desired speed. Teetor’s idea of a dashboard speed selector with a mechanism connected to the driveshaft and a device able to push against the gas pedal was patented in 1950. He added a speed lock capability that maintained the car’s speed until the driver tapped the brake pedal or turned off the system.

A 1955 U.S. patent for a “constant speed regulator” was filed in 1950 by M-Sgt Frank J. Riley. He conceived the device while driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and installed his invention in his car in 1948. Another inventor named Harold Exline, working independently of Riley, also invented a type of cruise control that he first installed on his own car and the cars of friends. Exline filed a U.S. patent for a “vacuum powered throttle control with electrically controlled air valve” in 1951, and the patent was granted in 1956. Despite these patents, Riley, Exline, and subsequent patent holders were not able to collect royalties for any cruise control inventions. The first car with Teetor’s “speedostat” system was the 1958 Chrysler Imperial (called “autopilot”) using a speed control dial on the dashboard. This system calculated ground speed from the rotating speedometer-cable and used a bi-directional screw-drive electric motor to vary the throttle position as needed. Cadillac soon renamed and marketed the device as “cruise control.” In 1965, American Motors Corporation (AMC) introduced a low-priced automatic speed control for its large-sized cars with automatic transmissions. The AMC “cruise command” unit was started through a push-button once the desired speed was reached, and then the throttle position was automatically adjusted by vacuum control directly from the speedometer cable, rather than through an adjustable Continued Next Page

without braking. When the cruise control is engaged, the throttle can still be used to accelerate the car, but once the pedal is released the car will then slow down until it reaches the previously set speed.

control on the dashboard. Daniel Aaron Wisner invented an “automotive electronic cruise control” in 1968 as an engineer for RCA’s Industrial and Automation Systems Division in Plymouth, Michigan. His invention is described in two patents filed that year (US patents 3570622 and 3511329), with the second introducing digital memory, and was the first electronic device that controlled a car. Due to the 1973 oil crisis and rising fuel prices, the device became more popular in the U.S. “Cruise control can save gas by avoiding surges that expel fuel” while driving at steady speeds. In 1974, AMC, GM, and Chrysler priced the option at $60 to $70, while Ford charged $103. In the late 1980s, an integrated circuit for Wisner’s design for an electronic cruise control was finally commercially developed by Motorola as the MC14460 Automotive Speed Control Processor in CMOS. The advantage of electronic speed control over its mechanical predecessor was that it could be integrated with electronic accident avoidance and engine management systems.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) By Project Kei - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0

On the latest vehicles fitted with electronic throttle control, cruise control can be integrated into the vehicle’s engine management system. Modern “adaptive” systems include the ability to automatically reduce speed when the distance

to a car in front, or the speed limit, decreases. OPERATION The driver must bring the vehicle up to speed manually and use a button to set the cruise control to the current speed. The cruise control takes its speed signal from a rotating driveshaft, speedometer cable, wheel speed sensor from the engine’s RPM, or from internal speed pulses produced electronically by the vehicle. Most systems do not allow the use of the cruise control below a certain speed - typically around 25 or 30 mph (40 or 48 km/h). The vehicle will maintain the desired speed by pulling the throttle cable with a solenoid, a vacuum-driven servomechanism, or by using the electronic systems built into the vehicle (fully electronic) if it uses a ‘drive-by-wire’ system. All cruise control systems must be capable of being turned off both explicitly and automatically when the driver depresses the brake, and often also the clutch. Cruise control often includes a memory feature to resume the set speed after braking, and a coast feature to reduce the set speed

The cruise control systems of some vehicles incorporate a “speed limiter” function, which will not allow the vehicle to accelerate beyond a pre-set maximum; this can usually be overridden by fully depressing the accelerator pedal. (Most systems will prevent the vehicle from increasing engine speed to accelerate beyond the chosen speed, but will not apply the brakes in the event of overspeeding downhill, nor stop the car from going faster than the chosen speed with the engine just idling.) On vehicles with a manual transmission, cruise control is less flexible because the act of depressing the clutch pedal and shifting gears usually disengages the cruise control. The “resume” feature has to be used each time after selecting the new gear and releasing the clutch. Therefore, cruise control is of most benefit at motorway/highway speeds when top gear is used virtually all the time. The speed limiter function however does not have this problem. Doug Coby Grabs 9th Place Finish in Clash at Claremont Motorsports Park

By SOUZA MEDIA

CLAREMONT, N.H. – Following 150 laps at Claremont Motorsports Park, Doug Coby scored a ninth-place finish in the 10th NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race of the season. Driving the famed No. 7NY for Tommy Baldwin Racing, Coby qualified 17th, but worked his way through the field during the Clash at Claremont to score a top-10 finish. The top-10 effort continued a streak of success for Tommy Baldwin Racing, who continues to lead the Whelen Modified Tour owners championship standings heading down the stretch run of the season. Coby, who had very limited laps at Claremont prior to Friday night, left with the best finish possible given the circumstances. “Track position is critical at tracks like Claremont and we didn’t have a good enough car in qualifying to start up Doug Colby Wins at Claremont. The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage. There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.

What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.

READ EVERY BACK ISSUE OF MOTORHEAD!

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid. When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. Etch pulls over and gets out of his GTO. He leans up against the driver side front fender with both of his arms crossing his body and his left foot draped over his right foot and just stands still looking at the group of people heading towards their parked vehicles on the side of the church. His black scissors cut sleeveless button up shirt and worn out black jeans with loose laced black work boots looks out of place outside a church full of well dressed families. An attractive woman stops in her tracks and starts walking his way with her eyes affixed on him just leaning on his car. “What are you doing here Jimmy?” she asks, with her head lowered trying

to avoid making eye contact. Etch just stands silent and reaches out to her. He pulls her into his body and gives her a big hug and kiss on the cheek. Her body goes limp and he holds her up tighter as she lowers her head just below his left shoulder. Etch stands over six feet tall and she stands at five feet something. She looks up into his eyes behind his dirty sun tinted glasses: “You shouldn’t be here.” She turns and begins walking away from the wanted outlaw. A man standing in front of the church is yelling for her to join him. He’s wearing a suit and tie and looks disgustedly at Etch still leaning against his Pontiac GTO. The man proceeds to

take his cell phone out of his suit coat pocket and starts taking a video of Etch. Etch enters the driver side door, sits down into the driver seat, crosses his body with the vehicle seatbelt, turns the ignition key firing up the GTO. Etch backs out onto Main Street still watching the cell phone video record everything that he is doing. He yells out, “Video tape this!” The Pontiac GTO fishtails down the street leaving the videographer in a cloud of smoke.
