“MOPAR MAN IN HEAVEN” By LARRY QUINTAL
Any of us who own a Mopar would know “Mopar Al Brunette”. How I met Al. I was building my daughter’s 1970 Dodge Dart and was on Craigs List looking for parts. I came across a man right around the corner in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, who had many parts. I reached out to him and brought my daughter with me to pick up some parts. We pulled up at his home and he introduced himself as “Mopar Al”. My first thought was, who the heck is this good ole’ country boy called Mopar Al? He reminded me of Cooter from “The Dukes of Hazzard”. He had on an old Mopar hat and was working on a car. As far as parts, if you needed it, he had it. Before we looked at what he had, he welcomed us into his garage. He asked my daughter if she would like to hear some of his cars run. He paid very little attention to me. You could tell he was so excited to have a young person - especially a girl - who loved Mopar’s. Then it started, he gave so many parts to my daughter and said if you guys ever need help or have any questions you are welcome here any time. A few other times I spoke with Al at his home, and it was always like I knew him for years. He told me about the old crazy days racing around Rehoboth. Later if I spoke to anyone and said I have a friend Al from Rehoboth, they all would say you mean Mopar Al? I started to realize this man is a legend. Just about all of New England loved and respected this man. He had a great passion for cars. A year or so later, my phone rang. talk with me. Knowing I owned a funeral home he wanted to talk about pre-arranging his funeral. I said Al you have 100 more years, he replied no I don’t, I have been diagnosed with cancer and it is not good. I was speechless, I have only known this man for a few short years and can only imagine how all his lifelong friends felt. Al said I am not worried about me; I want to make sure my family will be okay. That shows what type of person he was. A few months later I received the awful call, it was May 6, 2017, Al had passed. As I met with his wife Sheri and his son Jacob, I knew his funeral was going to have to be just as important as JFK’s. We needed to make it special, as Al said to me when we spoke of his funeral, “I want a big one”. At his wake, many muscle cars and many friends from all over showed up. The next day, probably the saddest day, the day of Al’s funeral. Some friends stuck Mopar emblems to his casket and as we wheeled Al to the hearse to begin the procession to Mt. Hope Cemetery in Swansea, Massachusetts, the parking lot was loaded with about 125 muscle cars with loud engines running and that sweet smell of racing fuel in the air. As sad as we were, we all had a smile. This is what Al would have wanted. Here we go, we just start pulling out of the funeral home parking lot and one of the muscle cars battery was dead. As I remember a tan Duster pulled out of line to jump the old Chevy. Though it was a beautiful Chevy with a 454, I had to hold back my
smile. I can just picture Al saying this would make a great commercial, a Mopar to the rescue. Now we leave for the cemetery, driving through Somerset, people were stunned, the shaking of the ground of many muscle cars in such a quiet town doesn’t happen every day. All over this quiet town you could hear car alarms going off and dogs barking. I think I saw more people taking photos than I ever had. As I sit back and think
about it, I probably should have hired a police escort, but hell this isn’t the first time Al outran the police. As we pulled into Mt. Hope Cemetery, 20 of these street machines lined up and revved the engines as their beloved friend Al, in the hearse, drove in. At the grave, after the final prayers, Al’s son Jacob took his dad’s car, a yellow 1973 Road Runner GTX, as we all watched Jacob start to drive slowly away from his dad’s grave and, all of a sudden, Jake nailed it. The smoke poured out from wide tires of Al’s pride and joy. Al must have sent a message from heaven to leave a burnout. All the people clapped. Now it was time for the other street machines to leave, well…. needless to say, it was like being at New England Dragway. One by one, each of Al’s friend left. That cemetery road will never be the same. If you go on YouTube and type in “Mopar Al’s Day the right of passage and Al’s final ride”, you will see part of it. By LRV World War II ended in 1945 and the men and women who got us through it are now known as the “Greatest Generation”. Those people who lived through the Great Depression and survived WWII shaped the world we live in today. One of the long-lasting impressions they le� is the art of Hot Rodding. Hot Rodding began in the 1930s, but many men took the skills they learned supporting the war effort and focused them on automobiles once it was over. Car ownership really took off in the 1950s and Hot-Rodding cars became very popular. The car you see here is a modern example of what those 1950s hotCALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

rods were. Mike Janelle was a body man by trade and has built/owned many cars over the years. His latest creation started with a custom frame by BlackBoard Hot Rods in Bakersfield California. Mike requested a few custom tweaks and had them pinch and bob the front frame rails. He also added a 1940 Ford rear crossmember and a 1940 Ford center crossmember, stretched the frame 2”, c-notched the front and rear to get the ride height lowered in the front and kicked up 2” in the rear to get the rake just right. In true hot rod fashion, the front and rear suspensions are a mix of parts to get just the right stance and period correct look. Including split wishbones on a “suicide” 1932 Ford axle in the front with a Posie Super Low Model A spring and 1940 Lincoln brakes. Mike heavily modified 1940 leaf springs in the rear. Gary Maxwell at BlackBoard HotRods custom made ladder bars to hold the rear-end in place. The rear-end is a custom 1939 Ford Banjo that houses 4.11 gears.

Mike planned to put miles on this car and to drive it hard, so he chose to avoid tranny problems and used a Tremec TKO 500 fi�ed with an adapter plate purchased through Modern Driveline in Idaho. Three new 97 Strombergs from England mix the fuel and air before it gets compressed by the supercharger and Fenton headers guide the exhaust into stainless 1-¾” straight pipes that exit out the back of the car. and is billed by the company as “The most accurate reproduction ever made”. The hood was fabricated by Rootlieb Inc which manufactures all kinds of vintage sheet metal parts. The windshield and roof were made by Dick Rodwell. The interior sports Italian leather and a steel dash with a custom Burl wood hydro dip all done by Mitch’s Kustoms in Monson, MA. Original style lights were used in the front and rear. Mike custom fabricated a head light bar for the front lights
to sit on. A 1939 Ford Banjo steering wheel is used to guide this rolling work of art down the road. Mike has put quite a few miles on the car and plans to put hundreds more on it this year. Look for him at various cruise nights and shows in the RI, CT and MA area. There is much more detail to this car than you can see here, it truly is Old School Cool.

related material, and he acknowledges this fact while addressing other models. 1971 starts the “third” generation of the Mercury Cougar – 1971 to 1973. (Wiki is grossly wrong, and the owners of ’99 to ’02 things keep changing it when proper edits are made). Therefore, we include some ’72 and ’73 Cats in this feature. Sadly, no diecasts were made of the 1971 to 1973 Cougars. (1971 Montego and Cyclone top the list of Mercury diecasts).
Small miscellaneous pieces are nice additions. Buttons, hat pins, stickers, and Matchbook covers fill this section. Odd Rods offered the unique Hot Rod stickers. (Sticker art was by B. K. Taylor in the style of Ed Big Daddy Roth. Note the Kumpf
dealership matchbook. The author’s 1969 Cougar was initially sold at Kumpf! These collectibles will remain in the May museum. What more will be added in 2021?
Paper products are their own category which includes manuals, magazine ads, postcards, and brochures, and add magazine articles and photos. All of these were offered annually with all the updates to each year’s cars/trucks. Brochures covered either the entire Mercury line or specific models. Vintage collectibles are favored in May’s museum. Who remembers vinyl and film? Training material consisted of both sent to dealers’ yearly. A film was paired with an associated vinyl lp album to highlight all the updates to Mercury vehicles. Always add a Kenwood stereo and your favorite Dukane projector to your collection. Models were and continue to be popular. MPC was the manufacturer of choice for Mercury Cougar models (1971 to 1973). AMT has re-issued “The Cat” street machine multiple times. Credit should go to Lindberg with making the only 3rd generation Mercury Cougar model. Miniature Cats are found in plastic. Procter & Gamble promo vehicles include a Montego and Cougar in their Funmate Go Car line. These made in Japan cars were found on detergent packages initially (1971 and 1972). The Cat is a rear spring powered car, and the Montego has a launch platform. A few years ago, NEO, a German company, created a 1/43rd scale resin version of the Cougar.

Bobcat in the Wild MN By ROB MAY and ROB LAHAMMER Mercury Cats are always in the wild awaiting to be featured. Minnetrista, MN is where this 1975 Bobcat makes its den. The Cat’s owner, Rob Lahammer, has loved cars all of his life. “A few years ago, after having some great muscle cars, I went back to my childhood roots of some underappreciated cars like Pintos, Pacers, Gremlins.”

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Reborn By ROB MAY and RANDELL SPACKMAN In the 1968 movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was rebuilt from an ex-racecar. Now in 2021, in West Chester, PA, we share the tale of a 1926 Model T Ford providing the platform for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to be reborn! Randell Spackman with his wife and 5 children, 4 daughters - Morgan, Rebecca, Darby and Madison with their son Jude brought this magical car back to life. Morgan and Rebecca were very involved helping to build “Chitty” for their little sister Darby at the time. “We watched the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and 2-year-old Darby fell in love with the car.” When Randell was in a junk yard, he saw an old Model T’s wheel poking out of the brush. “Something was pulling me to that part of the junk yard.” He found the car sitting there in pieces. “I never knew if I would ever make it into anything, but something called out from that old car. When I brought it home, Darby ran to the truck and saw Chitty on the back.” The old 1926 certainly needed some work done to it. He has worked on many cars, grew up on a farm making things run with no money, and found a way to fix things out of nothing. “Anything 42| Motorhead Magazine - April 2021
old, I loved, including hit and miss engines,my grandfather’s old 1964 Ford truck, and many other old tractors. “Working on Chitty in my farm shop, we re-spoked the wooden wheels and swapped out a new head and gaskets on the engine and installed new bands in the transmission.” The original head and split off of the block like a banana from water inside. “We got her running with my friend Steve Kanuika and his brother Mike. Morgan and Rebecca made this a family project. We had cartoons on the old shop TV for them to watch when things got slow.” They covered the body front end in a mylar coating for the chrome and painted the back with 15 coats of paint and transferred the wood grain detail with plates. “People still ask if I have to oil the wood.” The wings were hand-made and built out of rod steel with linear actuators. “There was no body on Continued Next Page

the car, so I made a cardboard mock-up of the car. Then transferred it to ¾ steel square stock and covered her in 22 ga steel. I used the English and plenishing hammers with shrinkers and stretchers to get the curves and bends.” The scale was difficult due to the short Model T wheelbase. “The boat tail is one of my favorite parts with the wood grain finish.” This was his first time ever building a body from scratch. Forming one side stretched a long and very hard time. “What I did not know at the time is that building the other side to match is a whole lot harder. I did not know if I could do it at times and was thinking what have I done starting this project. Darby would come down to the work shop and put flowers she picked from the gardens on the work area and tell Chitty ‘Please feel better PLEASE!’ Oh wow how could I not but try to finish this car for her?” They all raced and had it done for the local Kennett Square parade. “We even had some
friends at Langs Model T Parts bring us a new exhaust manifold for her the night before when the old one cracked badly the day before the parade! They knew someone nearby and got it to us faster than any mail service!” Randell takes her out only a couple of times a year because Model Ts are their own cantankerous machines. “She will start with half a crank sometimes, but watch out for the kick back!” Unique features?...” Well, it has wings and plays the theme song. We can drive down the street or parade and people will begin to sing along. People always think and feel that a machine can take on a spirit, well I know something brought this little car to us, and this old 1926 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang runs better when Darby is riding along. I think there is a little magic that gets into the machine. It gets a spirit, and this one made a little girl’s dream of her Chitty that will be there when she need her!” He has taken her to Chester County Antique Car club car show and Hagley Museum car show and many others “George Barris tried to buy her from me once, and I have taken my good friend Butch Patrick ( Eddie Munster) for a ride!” “As in the film, this car has taken on much more than the metal form…it is our fine four fendered friend.” Randell has built many props for theater and movies, but this is his favorite. A Banner Year For Traffic Safety

The year 2020 is behind us and a new year has begun with high hopes of getting back to some form of what we all call “normal”. Last year was far from normal, but that is not just due to the Coronavirus epidemic that took hold across America. Traffic fatalities increased by almost 40% nationwide last year and that was with far less people actually driving on our roadways.
I’m driving a 10,000 pound pick up truck high off the black top and most of them are driving small compact cars that I could actually fit into the bed of my truck. Wonder how that crash would turn out?
Just think about that for a moment. Far less drivers, but increased traffic related fatalities from previous years. I see it all the time on roadways here
This year, I am displaying my Award-Winning Traffic Safety Campaign, The SAFE And The SERIOUS Traffic Safety Banners reminding drivers to Drive Now...Text Later and reminding drivers and passengers to “Buckle Up”, at busy tourist and vacation spots in seaside communities along the South
in New England and New York State when I’m driving to and from meetings, or just to get out of the house for awhile after being stuck indoors most of the time since last March of 2020. Reckless driving, speeding and people on their phones driving while texting.

The American-Canadian Tour (ACT), Pro All Star Series (PASS), and Speed51.TV have announced a live pay-per-view broadcast for the annual Icebreaker at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 10 and 11. Both days of the auto racing festival will be available in full via the live broadcast. Fans around the world can enjoy 10 divisions of heart-pounding action. This includes the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 on Sunday for the new Outlaw Open Modified Series, a 75-lap Saturday showdown for the PASS Super Late Models, and all of Thompson Speedway’s local divisions. CHASE DOWLING HAS FULL TRI TRACK IN HIS PACKED 2021 SEASON PLANS By SOUZA MEDIA / KYLE SOUZA SEEKONK, Mass. -- Former Tri Track Open Modified Series presented by All Phases Renovations winner Chase Dowling has the six events on the 2021 schedule circled on his calendar. Set to compete behind the wheel for Ben Dodge in the No. 9 that the team debuted last year, Dowling will be planning to chase the championship. On top of Tri Track, Dowling plans to run select Open Modified races in New England -- including the Stafford Motor Speedway Open Modified race and the Thompson 300. He will also run a full slate of dirt track events at Lebanon Valley Speedway, a full SK Modified schedule at Stafford, select NEMA Midget events, and maybe additional races, if possible. “I’m not a firm believer that the more races you run the better you are -- but in my specific situation -- it’s good because I have the sponsors and crew guys behind me and I can focus on driving for most,” Dowling said. “It takes a lot out of you (to be running all of these races). I just have some good people behind it. You have to be in a good spot mentally, and allow yourself to reset for each race. You can’t let the night before transfer to the next day. Each race is a new race. I have to be on top of it as a driver.” As a previous three-time Tri Track race winner, Dowling is one of only three drivers in series history to have more than one win to his credit. The Sunoco Modifieds and SK Light Modifieds, Thompson’s two local open-wheel divisions, are back for another year and will compete at all six events during the 2021 season.
PRO STOCK/MOTORSPORTS NEWS Each division provides a mix of veterans, rising stars and newcomers, but the Sunoco Modifieds have long been dominated by those with the most experience. If anyone is going to visit Victory Lane, they will have to knock-off eight-time Thompson champion Keith Rocco first. The Connecticut native and former NASCAR National Champion (2010) has the most titles in track history and sits inside the top-five in the track’s all-time wins list.

Rocco completed a clean sweep of the races held at the Connecticut oval in 2020 and is the favorite heading into a new year. Rocco has the last four titles, while Woody Pitkat, NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece and the late Ted Christopher are the only other champions in the last decade.
The Outlaw Open Modified Series season will also include four Wednesday night races on June 16, July 7, August 11 and September 15, worth $5,000 to the winner. The return of the Thompson 300, worth $20,000-to-win, will be part of the annual World Series of Racing on October 8-10.
However, there will be a strong contingent of drivers looking to take Rocco off the throne. The leaders of that list include Todd Owen and Troy Talman. Both drivers have previous victories at Thompson, and Owen has been Rocco’s toughest competitor over the last few years. Owen went to Victory Lane in the 2019 World Series and has experience competing with Rocco at a high-level at multiple tracks in the same division.
Thompson Speedway opens its 82nd season with the annual Icebreaker on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11. A total of 10 divisions will compete across two days of racing. Sunday’s card features the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series with qualifying going green at 1:15pm. There’s also a 40-lap ACT-type Late Model shootout plus the Limited Sportsman and SK Light Modifieds.
“Keith is a great competitor and definitely the one you want to beat on the track,” Owen said. “I have a lot of respect for him both as a racer and as a person. I can’t wait to battle him at Thompson, Stafford, and anywhere else we race against each other this year.”
Saturday’s six-division card is highlighted by the season-opening Thompson 75 for the PASS North Super Late Models. They’re joined by the Sunoco Modifieds, NEMA LITES Midgets, EXIT Realty Pro Truck Challenge, Mini Stocks, and an 8-Cylinder Street Stock Open with a 1:00pm post time. An optional Test N’ Tune practice day is slated for Friday, April 9 with all Icebreaker divisions welcome.
Talman, who scored his first career Sunoco Modified Thompson win in 2017, has put his focus on competing at Thompson this season with his family-owned team. Early Sunoco Modified entries for the season also include former winner Danny Cates, Jonathan Puleo, Noah Korner and others. A strong field is expected to open the season as part of Icebreaker Saturday on April 10 with a 30-lap feature. Throughout the season, some of the top modified drivers from the region will compete in the competitive class. As part of the Sunday, April 11 race day, the SK Light Modifieds kick-off their season with a 25-lap feature. Last year, it was John O’Sullivan and Josh Carey who went to Victory Lane, with Carey’s victory marking his first career. The SK Light Modified division is known for giving drivers a step-ladder to get to the Sunoco Modifieds, but also as a place where veterans can compete at a more affordable cost. O’Sullivan is one of the early drivers commi�ng to race, while he’s joined by names like Steve Kenneway, Glenn Korner, George Bessette Jr. and Albert “Bert” Ouellette. Bessette is a former Street Stock champion at Stafford Motor Speedway, who made the jump to fulltime SK Light action in 2020. Watch closely for Paul “Buddy” Charette, who finished second in the World Series feature in 2020 and is looking forward to returning to compete at a high level. Charette is a former Late Model competitor at Thompson, and the switch to the Modifieds brought him to New Smyrna Speedway this past February to compete in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. He seems primed and ready to go.

The SRT Team Is Dead, Engineers Absorbed Within Stellantis: Report

With the merger between FCA and PSA completed, the new Stellantis group is official. While initial reports almost pushed the Chrysler brand off the edge, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares confirmed in a recent interview that it will be otherwise. Instead, Stellantis will prioritize reinvigorating the Chrysler marque in the US over bringing Peugeot across the Atlantic. As it stands, Chrysler is safe, but it seems like we weren’t looking at the right place during the merger. Apparently, the one that will (sort of ) hit the ax under the Stellantis group is the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) Team. This is according to a Stellantis spokesperson who spoke to Mopar Insiders amid the looming rumors. The move wasn’t a total dissolution of the SRT performance engineering team, though. According to the spokesperson, the team has been integrated into the company’s global engineering organization.

With that said, sales and development of SRT-branded vehicles under Dodge, as well as the Jeep and Ram vehicles that use the expertise of the SRT team, will still continue. This is just a mere dilution, with the SRT team working on all the brands under Stellantis. Meanwhile, while we still expect high-performance Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles in the near future, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis has confirmed in a recent interview that the days of the supercharged Hellcat V8 engines are numbered in favor of electrification. Could the disbandment of the SRT team be connected to this? Who knows, but we’d wager the use of electrification in performance vehicles under the Stellantis group, along with the help of the newly-absorbed SRT engineers, will play a huge role moving forward.

ExxonMobil and Porsche Test Lower-Carbon Fuel in Race Conditions

ExxonMobil and Porsche are testing advanced biofuels and renewable, lower-carbon eFuels, as part of a new agreement to find pathways toward potential future consumer adoption. The first iteration of Esso Renewable Racing Fuel is a blend of primarily advanced biofuels and is specially
formulated by ExxonMobil’s in-house team of scientists and engineers. Analysis indicates the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions with a liquid fuel. The fuel will be tested in race conditions with Porsche’s high-performance motorsports engines during the 2021 and 2022 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race series. Porsche and ExxonMobil’s collaboration will also focus on eFuels, which are synthetic fuels made from hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide. As early as 2022, the companies plan to test the second iteration of Esso Renewable Racing Fuel, which will contain eFuel components. The eFuel is anticipated to achieve a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of up to 85 percent, when blended to current market fuel standards for today’s passenger vehicles. “The electrification of our vehicles is of highest priority to us,” says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development of Porsche. “eFuels are a good complement to our powertrain strategy. allow our customers to drive cars with conventional combustion engines as well as plug-in hybrids with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. The collaboration with ExxonMobil enables us to test the eFuels under demanding conditions on the racing track. This is a further step towards making eFuels an affordable and lower greenhouse gas emission substitute to conventional fuels.”
The eFuel will be sourced from the Haru Oni pilot plant based in Chile that generates hydrogen, which is then combined with captured carbon dioxide drawn from the atmosphere to produce methanol. ExxonMobil is providing a license and support for the proprietary technology to convert the methanol to gasoline, which will result in a lower-carbon fuel. In the pilot phase, around 130,000 liters of eFuels will be produced in 2022. As the fuel’s primary user, Porsche will use the eFuels from Chile among others in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup starting in the season of 2022. “Over the past quarter century, we have worked together with Porsche to develop high-performance products that support Porsche’s vehicle performance on the racetrack and on the road,” said Andy Madden, vice president of strategy and planning for ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants. “Our continued collaboration on renewable and eFuels is a critical step in Continued Next Page

He drops the Goat into low and mats the gas pedal. The rear tires are spinning wildly leaving a huge billow of smoke from the burning rubber. The exhaust is so loud the two teenaged girls stop taking photos and videos to cover their ears with both hands. The teen boys are laughing and still video recording as the jet black GTO fishtails onto the blacktop and disappears around the bend out of sight. Etch then thinks the kids would get a kick out of seeing the GTO
come by the gas station again, but this time at a high rate of speed. He quickly hits the brake pedal and throws the shifter into low gear. He rotates the steering wheel hard to the left bringing the GTO completely around on the roadway until it is facing in the other direction. The muscle car stops abruptly and Etch looks behind him, and ahead of him, before he mats the gas pedal and slaps the shifter into drive. The GTO front end and tires lift off the pavement, leaning slightly to the right side, as the rear tires grab the black top before starting to spin and leaving a cloud of smoke in its wake. The GTO front end and tires slam down onto the pavement and the car launches back down the roadways headed back to the gas station. The GTO is

now passing by the gas station and the teens quickly grab their phones and record OUTLAW traveling by them at a high rate of speed. They were laughing and slapping each other on back as the GTO vanishes out of sight. Etch backs down on the gas pedal and brings OUTLAW to a normal cruising speed not seeing any police cars anywhere around him. He continues down the backroad hoping that stays the same at least for a little while. The GTO cruises beyond the wood line and disappears down the roadway.

community banning the events. It’s the FAA doing the banning on an airstrip that hosted hundreds of drag racing events. What’s the matter FAA? Afraid some of these street legal drag cars are faster than your airplanes and have better onboard service, peanuts and cold drinks?
