Inspiring Others “The influence of a great teacher can never be erased.” - Anonymous

Written by: Lydia Gleiser

Looking back on the life she has lived so far, Tiffany Wendling couldn’t imagine living or teaching anywhere else but here. Born and raised in the Siouxland area and blessed with a tight-knit family gave Tiffany the comfort she needed to know that everything she had ever wanted was right at home. Tiffany grew up on her family farm a little past Wynstone, SD, where her parents taught her the value of having a strong work ethic and the importance of serving others. She attended the former St. Peter’s school in Jefferson, SD where she graduated the eighth grade with only eight kids in her class. “When I went to school at Heelan High School in Sioux City, it was a whole new world!” Tiffany laughs. Being at Heelan introduced Tiffany to a variety of opportunities for her to excel at both sports and school related activities. While attending Heelan, Tiffany was active in basketball, track and cross country. “Through every activity, I developed a love of running track,” Tiffany shares. “At the time, I didn’t enjoy the distance required in running cross country, so I enjoyed track more.” Besides sports, Tiffany was involved in student council where she participated in meaningful community service projects. “Being a part of different acts of service was my favorite thing to do” Tiffany says. “I loved making connections with people and being able to help others in need.” After high school graduation, Tiffany attended the University of South Dakota (USD) in Vermillion, SD where she enrolled as a business major. She also coached her younger sister’s basketball team and worked at Bekins in Sioux City. “A lot of my friends ended up going to Iowa and Iowa State” Tiffany shares. “Entering my freshman year of college, didn’t know that many people at USD. What I did know is that I wanted to be able to still work and take classes, so I commuted every day.” While coaching, Tiffany began to see a natural connection that she was able to develop with each of her players. “In those moments, I realized how much I enjoyed working with kids and how I could relate to them,” Tiffany recalls.

“I realized how much I enjoyed working with kids and how I could relate to them.” Tiffany had always thrived off consistency, but when it came to her being a business major something was pulling her in a different direction. “I decided to switch majors from business to education and enrolled in the School of Education at USD,” Tiffany says. Not only did Tiffany’s switch in majors bring her to a new career path, but it also introduced her to her now husband, Josh, whom she met in one of her educational art courses. Months later, they ended up running into each other at a Dakota Valley vs. Beresford High School game. Shortly after, they went on a date and they have been together ever since. “I loved the education program that USD provided me. Finding my husband there was just another bonus,” Tiffany laughs as she and Josh will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this August. After student teaching at Dakota Valley in North Sioux City, SD, Tiffany graduated in December 1998 and was hired as a full-time aide in a fourthgrade classroom at the same school she student taught at. “The position that they hired me in was unique in that the classes in the fourth grade were so large they needed another teacher,” Tiffany shares. “Instead of hiring another fulltime teacher, they had me co-teach and assist the other teachers to help reduce the number of students that they were working with.” Tiffany found working at Dakota Valley felt like a second family, but she kept her options open and started applying for other teaching jobs, hoping to land a full-time teaching position. Towards the end of the year, she was offered a job to teach in Tea, SD.“ I was excited for the teaching offer, but I really wanted to stay at Dakota Valley. I went to my then principal to talk to

him about my options,” Tiffany remembers. “He told me to hold out because they had a reading position opening. At the time I was thinking that math would’ve been a better placement for me, but reading ended up being a perfect fit.” With her positive attitude and driven personality, Tiffany began teaching seventh and eighth grade reading at Dakota Valley Middle School, and she was also hired to oversee student council and coach volleyball, track and cross country. Always pushing herself to do more, Tiffany also decided to get her master’s in educational administration degree through USD’s Professional Development Center program that was being offered to education undergrads. “Just like the instruction that I received from USD’s School of Education, I absolutely loved their PDC program and the invaluable knowledge that I gained while being a part of it. It was a program offered to veteran teachers and new teachers. I was able to work toward my masters, intern under our Elementary Principal, and mentor a first year teacher,” Tiffany shares. “I had a wonderful new teacher that worked under me and together were able to coteach taking turns delivering instruction for the day,” Tiffany says. “I also assisted the principal where I was able to develop the first mentoring program for new teachers at Dakota Valley, along with creating our elementary curriculum and scheduling our professional development opportunities.” In her new mentor position, Tiffany played an integral role in not only assisting new teachers, but the principal and

the school district as well, all while still fulfilling her own teaching duties. “It was the best experience,” Tiffany shares. “I ended that year with my master’s in administration.” Tiffany’s ability to multitask and work as a supportive team member stood out to her co-workers and principal and she was asked to participate in the PDC program for another year, this time co-teaching with another new teacher, while working towards her masters in curriculum. With her fulfilling more than just a reading teacher role, a special position was created for Tiffany where she became the TeamLead Teacher of Curriculum and Instruction, a position that’s like an assistant principal. Together, Tiffany and her principal continued to work together while Tiffany taught reading in the morning and then focused on administrative duties in the afternoon.

The Wendlings on a family trip to Mexico

While Tiffany was confident and composed at school, at home she and Josh had been dealing with years of emotional highs and lows of infertility and with their strong marital bond, they were able to lean on each other for support. “The emotional toll it had on both of us was unbearable and some of the hardest moments of my life,” Tiffany shares. Adoption was an option that Tiffany had considered. Her mother was adopted, and the librarian at the school she worked at had just adopted her second daughter. With Josh’s full support, the Wendlings decided to put in an application through Catholic Charities and Children’s Hope International to begin their new adoption journey. “Together we decided to adopt a girl from China. The thing I didn’t realize is how long the overseas adoption process takes,” Tiffany says. “It was very thorough, and it took a year just to get all the

Tiffany pictured with her extended family

paperwork together and sent to China. Their offspring laws have changed and so the number of children looking to be adopted is smaller. You are also looked at as a number, and so you must wait until your number is drawn.” On Tiffany’s 30th birthday, they received news that their adoption application had been approved, also something Tiffany feels was a sign from God that they were doing what was meant for their family. “Nine years later, I was golfing with my parents, and I had to call Josh with the news while keeping it a secret from my parents for the rest of the round of golf. It was time for us to meet our new daughter, and they told us she was two and a half years old,” Tiffany remembers. Josh and Tiffany flew to China to meet their new daughter who they named Briel, after Gabriel the archangel. After spending about three weeks in China, they were able to bring Briel back home and right away, she bonded with other cousins who were similar in age. Tiffany is grateful for the blessing of Briel and feels her family is now complete. She also is a firm believer in everything happening for a reason as she feels that her life has come full circle. Currently, Tiffany is back in the classroom full-time teaching what she knows best—eighth grade reading. And while she is creating lifelong readers in her class, she is still in charge of student council and loves leading her students in different community service projects

around the area that include sock drives and adopting nursing homes. “Being able to show my students how to help others in even the littlest of ways is so fulfilling to see,” Tiffany shares. Her endless encouragement of her students, relationships that she creates with others, and her growth of the cross-country team earned her a nomination for Coach of the Region, an honor that she humbly says is only because of the wonderful students that make up her cross-country team. While reflecting on her life and her ability to handle whatever obstacles have come her way, Tiffany has always made God, her family and her friends a priority and doesn’t take anything for granted.

She doesn’t have any plans for slowing down and feels that her future plans are all in God’s hands. She shares

that

prioritizing

the things in life that are most meaningful to her is what keeps her grounded and whole as she continues looking for ways to give back to others and leading by example.

MORE ABOUT

Tiffany For most people it takes nine months to bring a baby home and it took the Wendling Family nine years. Tiffany and Josh adopted their daughter, Briel Lu Wendling, from China in 2015 when she was just 2½ years old. Tiffany loves working out and running has always been her passion. She has run several half marathons and one full marathon (Chicago on 10/10/10). Tiffany was a sprinter in high school but now considers a 5k too short and fast. She prefers a longer run. Tiffany loves traveling and owns a timeshare in Cabo where she vacations with her family. A few of her favorite travel sites that she has visited include the Sistine Chapel, the Great Wall of China, and the Eiffel Tower. Tiffany has always had a strong work ethic. She started working at a very young age riding the bean buggy or walking beans. She chose to commute to the University of South Dakota so she could work while attending college. She held five different jobs throughout her first years of teaching (teaching, coaching, working at Two Rivers Golf Course, Pier One Imports, and Zorts Fireworks). Tiffany bungee jumped with friends back in her college days and ever since she became scared of heights.

produced by Bailey Pro Rodeo comes to the Tyson Events ccording to Emily Vondrak, director of marketing for the Tyson Events Center, there’s something for everyone to enjoy with the PRCA Rodeo. “Complete with bull riding, barrel racing, broncos, roping, and more, people can expect edge-of-your-seat action, coming from the toughest riders and ropers around,” she said. “Bailey Pro Rodeo stock has taken on the biggest eight-second rides across the country, from rodeos in Denver and Houston to the National Finals in Las Vegas.”

Center Feb. 9-10.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the oldest and largest professional rodeo-sanctioning body in the world. Annually, the PRCA sanctions more than 650 top-of-theline, multiple-event rodeos in 44 states and four Canadian provinces, Vondrak pointed out.

Vondrak emphasized the rodeo has been well-received when it comes to Siouxland.

“These rodeos represent the cream of the crop among thousands of rodeo-related events that take place each year across North America,” she said. “As a membershipdriven organization, the PRCA works to ensure that every event it sanctions is managed with fairness and competence.”

“The rodeo has always been a popular event for us here at the Tyson Events Center because agriculture is such an important part of our local communities,” she said. “Many of our attendees will also frequent fairs and events over the summer, so it’s great to be able to offer that entertainment indoors during the winter months.”

Comedic entertainment for the show will come courtesy of Austin Singley – The Green Hat Clown. An award-winning rodeo clown, entertainer, and stuntman, Singley began his journey to becoming a Professional Rodeo Clown in the Summer of 2009. Austin has three horses he takes on the road with him: Bandit, his black Azteca Gelding Trick Riding Horse, and his brand-new matching set of Clydesdale Geldings out of the Budweiser bloodline, Wilson and Windsor; who are his trusty Roman Riding Team. Vonrdrak encouraged families to take advantage of the event. “I would say that this will be an awesome two nights of rodeo,” she said. “The PRCA circuit has a high caliber group of riders and stock,” she said. “Additionally, the variety of events during the evening will include bulls, broncos, roping, and more, so it will be a fun, entertaining night for the whole family.”

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication – Leonardo da Vinci

The Art of Simplicity in Interior Design: Creating Tranquil Spaces In a world filled with constant noise and clutter, there is a growing appreciation for simplicity in all aspects of our lives. Interior design is no exception. “The concept of simplicity in interior design goes far beyond just visuals; it’s about creating spaces that are not only beautiful and stylish but also functional and calming,” says Kathy Sorbe, owner and lead designer at The Elements in Storm Lake. “Simplicity, in its simplest form, creates tranquil and harmonious living spaces.” Simplicity in interior design is more than just a minimalist aesthetic. It is a philosophy that embraces the idea that less can often be more. At its core, simplicity seeks to eliminate excess, clutter and unnecessary

Not wanting to distract from the gorgeous views, a large room with floor-to-ceiling windows still feels warm and inviting with just a sofa, chair, coffee table, rug and floor lamp. And simple doesn’t have to be small. The large piece of art is subtle, but at over ten feet tall, it makes an impressive statement in this spectacular room.

A simple fabric bed is flanked by matching nightstands with pendants for lighting. The wooden accent wall chosen is both simple and dramatic simultaneously, and the space feels even more relaxing with no other furniture pieces. Storage is handled with a walk-in closet and behind hidden panels.

embellishments, allowing the essence of a space, your favorite art or a few signature pieces, to shine through. The goal is to create an environment that promotes serenity, mindfulness and a sense of balance. And while many think that finishing a space with fewer items is easier, Sorbe believes achieving a simple space without it looking bare or unfinished is more challenging than it seems. “Minimalism is a popular design style that epitomizes simplicity,” says Sonnie Brinkman, a member of the Elements Design Team.

This trestle table is stylish and utilitarian and surrounded by Asian-inspired dining chairs. Instead of a complicated centerpiece, the Design Team chose a simple glass vessel filled with seeded eucalyptus, an Elements’ favorite. Permanent florals are amazing, but nothing beats the addition of some Mother Nature.

“It emphasizes the use of fewer elements, a restrained color palette and a focus on functionality.” The Design Team starts with one principle of minimalism on every project that all homeowner should embrace: decluttering your space. They recommend removing items that do not serve a purpose or bring you joy. This will create a clean canvas on which to build your design. “Simplicity thrives in open and uncluttered spaces,” says Sorbe. “Avoid overcrowding rooms with too much furniture or a lot of accessories. Allow for the negative space to create a sense of airiness and freedom of movement.” Sorbe notes this principle is especially important in small living spaces, where every inch counts. Frequent visitors to the store or The Elements Design Seminars have likely heard one of Sorbe’s mantras: clutter is the enemy of style.

Nothing feels better than a clean, smooth kitchen. However, the space is typically one of the most used. The Design Team likes simple, but useful accessories, and the white dishes and pour-top bottles almost disappear until they are put to use.

Simplicity often means scaling back on decorative elements. Instead of filling every wall with years of school pictures and every surface with knick-knacks, select a few meaningful pieces that enhance the overall aesthetic. Quality over quantity is key when it comes to decor. “You don’t need every picture out … slim down your collection and just display your favorites or corral your collections on a tray or bookcase,” says Sorbe. “There’s a misconception that to achieve a well-executed style you have to get rid of all your ‘stuff.’ That’s just not the case … it just takes a bit of planning and thought.” Furniture with clean lines and a focus on functionality is essential in achieving simplicity. Picking the right pieces that homeowners won’t tire of quickly is important. Furniture with simple lines will ultimately create a beautiful and timeless look. “We like pieces with simple silhouettes that serve their purpose efficiently,” says Sorbe. “We avoid overly ornate or bulky furniture that can clutter a room and disrupt the flow of the space.” Scaled drawings provided by the Design Team ensure that your furniture is the right size for your space.

Many homeowners believe that black and white will be boring, but it’s one of the most sophisticated color combinations when done correctly. A low, square black coffee table is flanked by two large white sofas. And you don’t have to treat these white sofas any differently; they’re covered in performance fabric and can be easily cleaned when a spot shows up.

Sorbe notes that good furniture is an investment that should hold up to daily use for a long time. Choosing pieces that aren’t trendy offer opportunities to update your space dramatically with throws, accent pillows and accessories and provide a longer lifespan for your space and bigger “bang” for your furniture investment. Neutral color schemes are a hallmark of simplicity in interior design. Shades of white, beige, tan and gray create a sense of tranquility and space. These colors provide a neutral backdrop that allows other design elements, such as furniture and decor, to stand out without overwhelming the senses. Monochromatic color schemes use different shades and tones of a single color or a color family. This creates a sense of visual harmony and cohesion throughout a space. It makes the interior design appear elegant and well-balanced. “One of my favorite rules of thumb is to use no more than three different types of wood in one space,” says Brinkman. “The same rule can be applied to paint, stone and other materials – using too many different colors and materials can lead to a space that feels overwhelming, distracting and not very cohesive.”

Another white sofa in a high-use area, this time accented with a wooden base. The open shelves in this space contain accessories, but The Design Team loves the accessibility and smooth look of white dishes stacked up and ready to use. Open shelves are easier to manage than some homeowners think.

Using multiples of the same item – called generosity in the interior design world – will feel like a single design element and adds significant impact in your space without appearing crowded, cluttered or busy.

The Design Team believes that monochromatic color schemes is one of the most sophisticated choices your designer can create.

The Design Team opts for high-quality bedding in natural fabrics to create a peaceful atmosphere. Custom window coverings, like motion blackout shades, can finish off your restful sanctuary.

“When using a monochromatic color scheme, the emphasis often shifts from color to texture and materials,” says Brinkman. “This allows for the use of various textures in furnishings, fabrics and finishes, which can add depth and interest to the design.” Lighting also plays a crucial role in interior design, and simplicity extends to this aspect as well. “We use natural light whenever possible by maximizing windows and minimizing heavy window treatments,” says Brinkman. “Where lighting is needed, choose fixtures with clean and unobtrusive designs that provide ample illumination without drawing too much attention.” Instead of overhead lighting, the Design Team places table and floor lamps to illuminate the space. Overhead lighting can be harsh and too bright. With thoughtful placement of lamps, the light can also help define your space.

Sorbe believes that homeowners should focus on one space in the home where they should embrace simplicity: the bedroom. “A tranquil bedroom is essential for restful sleep and rejuvenation,” says Sorbe. “Keep the bedroom simple with a minimalist bed frame, uncluttered surfaces and a soothing color palette. Walk-in closets allow homeowners to further smooth out the space, removing the need for additional dressers and storage pieces.”

“We have a gorgeous collection of bedding and linens that are 100% natural fabrics,” says Sorbe. “Our custom window coverings also offer a lot of options that are simple, functional and can block out light.” Creating a tranquil and harmonious living space can have a positive impact on your overall well-being. Simplicity allows you to prioritize what truly matters, fostering a sense of contentment and mindfulness. This design philosophy promotes focus and productivity. A clean and uncluttered workspace can help you concentrate on tasks without distractions. Finally, a clutter-free and simplified living space can even reduce stress and anxiety. Reduce your stress even more by contacting the Design Team to help with your next project. The Minimally-Invasive Procedure Most Women Don’t Know About. But Should. Written by: Neal Khurana, MD, Interventional Radiologist

Millions of women have fibroids. In fact, 70-80% will develop them by the time they are 50. Most women do not have access to all treatment options. So, what are fibroids and what is UFE? Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus. They can cause heavy painful periods, abdominal pain and pressure, back pain, constipation, bloating, and sexual dysfunction. They can also cause social anxiety from having to constantly urinate, fear of bleeding, and pain during sex. Most women are offered invasive surgery to treat fibroids. Hysterectomy is the complete removal of the uterus and requires general anesthesia. Recovery can take up to six weeks and often results in removal of the ovaries. A uterus-sparing surgery called myomectomy also involves anesthesia and is not always successful. Fortunately, doctors known as Interventional Radiologists have been treating fibroids without surgery with a procedure known as Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Unlike surgery, UFE requires just a small nick in the wrist or groin area. The physician inserts a slim tube and guides it to the artery that supplies the fibroids. Tiny particles are delivered through the catheter, blocking the blood flow to the fibroids. The fibroids begin to shrink, relieving the symptoms of pain, heavy periods, and pelvic pressure in over 90% of cases. The outpatient procedure is performed in the office and takes about an hour with light sedation.

Dr. Neal Khurana, a board-certified interventional radiologist at Vascular & Interventional Specialists, says “UFE is like pulling the weeds but keeping the garden the uterus and ovaries stay put, which is so important.” Many hysterectomies are performed for uterine fibroids without patients being aware of less invasive procedures, like UFE. If you are told you are a candidate for myomectomy or hysterectomy, you are likely a candidate for UFE. “The recent advancements of this procedure have you home the same day. It is truly incredible to be this minimally invasive and help women find relief without surgery - and more importantly keep their reproductive organs intact,” says Dr. Khurana. To see if UFE is right for you, schedule a consultation with Vascular & Interventional Specialists at (605) 217-5617.

UT THE STUFF BY: LISA CROSTON

Cleaning out a property is a daunting task. Not cleaning it, clearing it. Ridding the property of all the furniture, the closets, cabinet contents, the dishes, the linens, the bedding, storage rooms, garage and sheds. Leaving only the real property…the real estate.

Several years ago I assisted a family who had two estate homes to clear out. These homes had been owned and occupied for over forty years. Yes, that is forty years of accumulation.

the buyer for pickup and hauling away. As the saying goes, “one person's junk is another’s treasure.” Furniture repurposing is at an all time high, so Gram’s old hutch may be worth more than you think.

There are options to consider when faced with a whole property clean out depending on proximity of family members and the time that one is willing to dedicate. A good old rummage sale can make a dent, but as you sort through the items, do your research to determine if anything is collectible or valuable.

An auction could attract many bidders to push items to their highest price. An auctioneer may advise that the inventory needs to bring a certain amount to make it worth anyone’s time. Advertising costs and the auctioneer fee will eat up a good chunk of the profit. Research auction houses that hold consignment sales regularly. These companies need inventory and may agree to take all your contents and sell them for a percentage of the proceeds. This could be a one-and-done route if that fits your needs.

You may want to have a local antique dealer give an opinion of value. They may even make you an offer on individual pieces. Some companies can be hired for a “Tag Sale” in which they sort and price all the personal items and host a two or three day sale inside the property. This may be one step up from the average rummage. These companies typically have a following of buyers to attract to each sale. Facebook Marketplace is a good source to sell items or even post “FREE,” however, you must deal with meeting

If you are willing to donate, there are many non-profit organizations that are willing to accept your items and some will pick up. Clothes and household items are always in need. You can collect a donation receipt for tax purposes. No one wants to be wasteful, but some items will need to be tossed. Recycle the empty margarine tubs and throw out the musty-dusty silk roses. A dumpster for some may be a necessity. The amount of time from sort to sale will most likely be more than you estimate. Start with organizing to like-kind groups of items and then execute your best clearing plan. And don’t forget to appreciate the memories these items may stir up or the lives that held these treasures for so many years.

This year’s Dakota Valley Girls basketball team is a high intensity team that looks to play fast and aggressive on both offense and defense. We focus on being able to score with options both inside and out. We strive to play with high energy and intensity on the defensive end and that always helps ignite our offense. We have continued to push hard week in and week out and have seen continued improvement throughout the season. We continue to look stronger, more confident and more aggressive with each game. We have a great combination of exciting youth and experienced upperclassmen. This team is packed full of players who are willing to work hard, challenge themselves and work together to find success. We are very excited to see what the future holds for all of these young ladies and our Dakota Valley girls basketball program.

FEELING STUCK: HOW PLAY THERAPY CAN BREAK THE CYCLE OF TRAUMA

Building blocks, UNO, art or puzzles. These are all things you do when playing. They’re also tactics of play therapy that therapists will use for kids, teens or adults who have experienced something traumatic.

By: Michaela Feldmann

“Play therapy has been around for decades now,” says Jewel Swanson, a rural schoolbased supervisor and licensed play therapist at Heartland Counseling Services. “It’s basically a child’s way of communicating and processing the world around them after they’ve experienced something they don’t understand.” While trauma is different for every person, one example is if a child has witnessed a medical emergency in their home. “Maybe they saw an ambulance come and take a family member to the hospital. It was out of their control, and it was scary and unexpected. They sense the fear and chaos around them, but they don’t know what to do with those emotions. So, you might see them pretending to make a panicked phone call and saying ‘Help! Help!’. Or you might see them playing with doctor toys to try and fix someone.” Jewel says this can be a sign that they’re stuck in the cycle of trauma. That’s where therapists like Jewel and Jamie Mackling come in. “As therapists we are there to help them play through what they need to process,” says Jewel. “It can be with puppets, art, sand or playing dress up. Basically, any way to help that child act out the story and, in some cases, give the story an alternative ending. It can help them get unstuck from that moment they are stuck in.” But it’s not just young kids who can benefit from play therapy. Teens and adults often need help processing trauma with more than just talk therapy. “Play therapy can be such a good alternative to talk therapy because not everyone responds well to sitting in a chair, facing each other and talking about hard things that are happening,”

Play therapy can be such a good alternative to talk therapy because not everyone responds well to sitting in a chair, facing each other and talking about hard things that are happening. says Jamie. “So, when we are playing a card game like UNO, taking a walk or coloring, it takes our focus and pressure off of just sitting here talking. So, it’s play therapy in a way.” It’s a tactic they use often in both of their roles in the school setting. “A lot of times teachers are approaching us or school administration saying they’re noticing a child is having behavioral issues,” says Jamie. “Maybe they’re acting out in the classroom. Maybe they’re having trouble managing their emotions or focusing. If these outbursts or reactions are out of character, they can be indications that a kid is struggling and needs help.” Over the last few years, both Jamie and Jewel say they’ve seen the need to use school-based therapists rise. “When I started at Heartland Counseling six years ago, there were not many of us and even fewer in rural schools,” says Jewel. “After COVID, we realized kids’ mental health really took a hit. Play therapy works really well in school because there is a limited amount of time that we get to see students for. Being in the school setting, I can pull them out during study hall or an elective instead of during a core class if they are struggling.” Both Jewel and Jamie say it’s been inspiring to see other agencies, including Heartland, branch into even more schools.

JEWEL SWANSON

LIMHP, LCSW, RPT, School Based Supervisor

Jewel is a school-based mental health therapist in O’Neill Public Schools and works with students ranging from preschool through age 21. In 2023, Jewel was promoted to being Heartland’s School Based Supervisor and will also continue working with the older students in O’Neill. Jewel is a registered play therapist and has been trained in EMDR and TF-CBT. Jewel began working at Heartland in August 2018.

JAMIE MACKLING

LMHP, LPC, RPT

Jamie is a mental health practitioner who works with all ages of individuals. She currently provides therapy in the rural school districts of Bancroft-Rosalie and Wakefield through Heartland’s School Based Mental Health Program. Jamie has also worked with the District 6 Probation office providing group therapy. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and received her Registered Play Therapy certification in 2023. Jamie joined the Heartland team in September 2017.

“I think schools and administration see the benefit of having someone right there if there is a crisis. If a school approaches us, we are going to do our best to fill that and help kids work through trauma.” So, what do you do if you know your child is struggling? “I think anytime a parent has concerns, they should reach out,” says Jewel. “Don’t be afraid and don’t tell you child to stop acting or playing out these scenarios. If something is on our mind, we can’t stop thinking about it just because we are told to. We want to help them process what happened and move forward.
