A Family Affair By: Natalie Frazier To Terry Schefcik, the Raven Red and Alpine White 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta has been a family affair. From being shuffled through her own family to making memories for other families, every time the classic car drives by and an ecstatic collector gets to see it for the first time in person. She still takes time to reminisce on the black and white photograph of her father-in-law purchasing the classic car in the dealership showroom. After marrying her husband

8 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

Laurence Schefcik in 1972, the couple bought the car from Laurence’s mother after the passing of his father. Terry may not have acquired the car until 1972, but says she has always known her love for cars from that era. “Even though the Fiesta and I didn't meet until 1972, I loved the 1953 era, ”Schefcik said. “Perhaps, it was because I was born that year and lived in them, or because my brother had fixed up a 1956 Chevy that we rode to high school for a couple of years in the 60's.”

The Fiesta lived out most of its life in Alliance, NE before it was brought to the Scheficik’s retirement home right here in the Black Hills. They continue to make countless memories with the car right here in Rapid City and beyond. “When I meet people that know what the car is, it is a treat for them to see it in person,” Schefcik said. “One of my favorite encounters was with an elderly gentleman in downtown Rapid City. He worked at the Scottsbluff, NE dealership, S & T Olds, and remembered the car when it was on the showroom floor.”

The Fiesta is a classic beauty that has a vintage charm and style that captures attention each and every time Schefcik takes it out and about. She remembers a story vividly of almost getting into an accident after putting classic car fans in awe on the roadways in Hill City. In its time the Fiesta was a luxury with power windows and leather seats. It boasts a sleek convertible design with a distinctive grill and tail lights. Schefcik has found the value in leaving the car in unrestored condition to preserve the classic beauty.

Schefcik has continued to take the car out and about and works on its drivability with the help of her fiancé, Don Oskey. So much so, they were able to transport the car to its first "National Antique Oldsmobile'' show in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 2023. The transmission, motor, convertible top, plus many other details of the car were addressed before it was good enough to drive safely. Terry and Don trailered the rare automobile to the show in La Crosse, and stated that the car has only been out of the state once. Schefcik’s Oldsmobile was one of three Fiestas at the car show. Terry had previously met the owners of the other Fiestas, Leo Stutzman and Chuck Larson, at the last NAOC show in 2022. “They were a wealth of information and good sources of information in getting parts,” Schefcik said. “My car was the only original. The others are beautifully restored and all were excited to see the car because of its history.”

Being one of two cars sold in Nebraska, it was missing to the public outside of the panhandle of Nebraska. Now, it has resurfaced for all to see. People knew it existed because of Ralph Sandmeyer from Oklahoma, known as “Dr. Fiesta,” who had visited Schefcik twice at the farm to document the car. Her Fiesta is one of two in original condition. Most of them nowadays are not considered safe to drive. She has spent the last two years making it road-worthy in order to drive it during the Oldsmobile shows. If fact, Terry reported that the car is considered rare because there were only 458 of the special model made in 1953. Of that number, 40-50 Fiestas remain worldwide including three overseas, and one in Canada.. Terry says that taking care of an old car is a constant throughout her life. “Those parts are 70 years old and she's not too bad for her age,” Schefcik said. “I have all the original books for the car and probably the only key chain that is original to the car.”

the

When it comes to the weekend street cruising car culture of today, I believe we will start to see more cars and trucks that most have ignored up to this point in time because they were under powered and lacked a grab your attention style. I am not talking about new vehicles, but older ones that weren’t highly thought of when they were new from like 1973 up thru the 1990’s which includes pretty much all brands. It was during that era that our government kind of roped in the power and speed cars used to come with previously and required them to be designed safer with ugly crash bumpers on each end. It is really kind of ironic that those changes never really helped to slow people down nor that there were ever less fatal accidents noted because of those government-imposed regulations.

Today, when it comes to customizing an automobile for personal taste, there is a trend where bumpers, even on the good-looking cars, are cut down, narrowed, and even pulled in tight to the body so they enhance the body lines rather than distracting while hanging out there in a stock position. And today when it comes to power, the real horse power can be thought of as unlimited based on the size of your checkbook whether in a new car, or something someone is building. Having a car or truck the way a person has always wanted it while making a visual statement that others look at, or driving a vehicle with a 1,000 -horsepower engine has always been the driving force for the car culture with no rules other than speed limits. There isn’t too much more fun than rolling down the street in a car or truck that gathers attention and is followed with thumbs up.

My story this month kind of evolves around what I wrote about in the earlier paragraph. A couple years ago, a friend of mine, Steve Ollerich, finally found a 1973 GTO to add to his extensive GTO collection. He said it was the hardest one to find because Pontiac built only 4608 of them for 1973. This one came out of Mankato, Minnesota and was driven mainly by the wife of the couple who owned it. The car had really nice black paint with a new black interior with a 4- speed manual transmission. They replaced the original 400” engine with a larger 455” Pontiac engine in the car and installed 4.11 rear end gears so she could race their Mopar friends and usually beat them for a two-block race. I was really surprised when Steve told me that it was the wife’s idea to modify the original front crash bumper to be closer to the front of the car. It just shows that even women can tell when something doesn’t look good on a car!! They had had their fun with the car and were looking for a pickup now to play with, so the car was for sale to help fund a new acquisition.

Bob Schmeichel

After the agreement was made, the husband told Steve to hurry and get it on the trailer as his wife was going to cry about selling the car. Steve saw that as he was making out the check and handed it off to the wife who had mascara running down her cheeks. Steve told them that he would give them a week. If they wanted their car back, he would bring it back with out a question and left it at that. One-week later Steve got a call back from them thinking, “Oh no, they want the car back!” As it turned out they called to let Steve know they had found a pickup in Martin, South Dakota and wanted to thank Steve for his concern if they wanted it back. So, Steve breathed a sigh of relief as they told him about what they had bought and they were ok with him keeping the car. Since having it, Steve has really enjoyed driving it and pushing it to the point of spinning a rod bearing which is really part of enjoying the hobby. Steve will be installing another smaller sized 400” Pontiac engine to bring it back to the way it originally came from the factory. I’m not saying anything to be critical, but a little slower makes things last longer which is my age talking here, even though it is fun to push your limits once in a while.

A farm boy from Salem, Bob’s family moved to Sioux Falls when he was 12 years old. After graduation from Washington High School, he attended USD where he majored in Commercial Art. A lifelong auto and art enthusiast, Bob wanted to combine his passions into a career. A self-taught mechanic, bodywork, welder and painter, he worked in the industry for seven years. He later went to work for Horner Waldorf Box Company, where he worked for the next 33 years, retiring as Package Design Manager for Smurfit Stone Container. Bob has built dozens of street rods over the years, doing everything except the upholstery work. Bob started the Great Plains Street Rodders Car Club in 1985 and today the club has over 340 members. You can see more of Bob’s paintings and car features on the club’s website: www.greatplainsstreetrodders.com.

Truck Accessories:

By Sarah Grassel Growing up in the small town of Eureka, South Dakota, Erica Ingerson has always loved working with her hands. Her father ran his own welding business, and Erica recalls spending much of her time out in the shop alongside him. “When I was a sophomore in high school, I took an introduction to welding class where I realized how much I truly enjoyed welding,” Erica shares. Even then, though, Erica says her plan for the longest time was to become a certified public accountant or do something more hands-on in the business field. During her senior year, Erica began looking into life after high school more seriously and was considering several colleges but ultimately followed her big sister who was currently attending Mitchell Tech and spoke very highly of the programs.

24 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

Erica explains, “My sister told me all about their welding program, and then I went to an exploration day to tour it. I fell in love with everything about the program, but I especially liked the machining and CNC programming side.”

Erica was fortunate enough to receive a Double Edge scholarship.

Initially, when Erica was accepted into the program at Mitchell Tech, she completed the general application form. “In the form, there’s an option to apply for the Build Dakota Scholarship Fund program which I chose to do,” Erica adds.

Mitchell Tech prides itself on the intense hands-onexperience students get in the field during their program coursework, and it’s been no different for Erica. “Mitchell Tech along with its welding and machining program is set up in a way that makes certain you are ready to go out into the industry in only two years,” Erica says. “We take a lot of lab classes that give hands-on time to learn the skills we are developing and a variety of other classes like metallurgy, welding blueprint reading, and general education courses that give us the skills and knowledge to be a well-rounded individual in our career.”

There are two options for recipients, a full ride from the Build Dakota Scholarship fund or a Double Edge Build Dakota scholarship which partners with an industry sponsoring company. Erica received the latter. “As the scholarship recipient you work for that industry partner for three years following graduation and they pay for half of your schooling while the fund pays for the other half.”

Erica plans to continue her education after she graduates this spring. “While working to fulfill the Build Dakota Scholarship, I also plan to take a year of entrepreneurship at Mitchell Tech,” she says. Ultimately, she wants to continue working with her dad back home and further expand the family business by adding new equipment like CNC machines, a lathe, and a mill.

After that, she knew she had to apply. Erica is now set to graduate this spring from the Machining and Manufacturing program with an associate of applied science degree.

ABOVE + BEYOND ADVOCATING FOR MITCHELL TECH AS A STUDENT AMBASSADOR

As someone who has really thrived in the program and enjoys the experience as a whole, Erica chose to get involved as a student ambassador. “Being an ambassador, I get to meet students in other programs, and I get to promote the best technical school around,” Erica says proudly. Primarily as student ambassador, Erica answers questions prospective students have about the welding and manufacturing program while they are still deciding on the best path for them. During the same exploration days that Erica once attended, she now gives tours to incoming students encouraging them to apply. Erica also attends various high school career fairs to promote the program.

THE EXTRA MILE

ALL THE LITTLE THINGS I have been an engine machinist my entire professional working life and if there is one thing I have learned it’s that paying close attention to the small things is really huge. These small things can make or break an engine build because many of these procedures most engine shops don’t want to take the time to do them, don’t know how to check them, or don’t have the equipment to check and service the problem. By checking and addressing all of these little things not only will the engine perform better, but it will also eliminate problems later. What frustrates me is that we seem to have become a society of desiring the cheapest product and have accepted that the product will prematurely fail, and so we just buy another cheap product as a replacement. I refuse to become that! Engines are a work of art. We put all of our heart and soul into them and it is absurd to do anything less than our absolute best in all that we do. From the beginning we have pushed to be the best and it hasn’t stopped yet, so in light of this we will discuss some of the extra things that we do and why we do them.

The engine block to some seems to be a simple component, but it is not the case. The cylinder bores are the first and most common thing to be corrected but most people forget to check the main bore size and alignment, deck surface straightness and height. Other hidden and forgotten things that need attention are the oil galley alignment, lifter bore size, cam tunnel bore size and roundness, cylinder thickness, and camshaft to crankshaft centerline distance. The oil galley system is important to direct the correct supply and volume of oil to all of the areas of the engine. When the engine blocks are machined, many times the oil galleys are restricted for various reasons. Some of the galley ports are machined from both ends at the factory and often they will not meet up very well in the middle causing a restriction. To correct this, we will drill the galley out to correctly connect and correct the obstruction. We check all oil ports and have found some that are drilled down in size, some have drill flashing left in them, and some are started and incomplete with just a small pinhole that was existing. Lifter bore size can be an issue and may cause severe oil system leakage. In addition, the cam tunnel size can be off quite a bit. It has been

seen that the bores are big which will provide a loose cam bearing or they can be out of round and when pressing the new bearing in the inside diameter is compromised it will have a tight spot on the camshaft journal causing issues. We cam bore out the cam tunnel and install larger diameter cam bearings to correct the alignment and provide proper bearing crush. Knowing the cam to crank centerline will give us the needed information to provide the correct timing set so the clearances are not too loose or too tight. Other things we always do is to confirm wrist pin bore integrity and press fit or clearance in full floating combinations. These are just a few of the many things that we attend to here at Sehr Performance. Going the extra mile and confirming all of the little things will absolutely make the big things be at their best. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE CAR/WHY YOU CHOSE THIS CAR. WHAT’S YOUR CAR’S STORY? This car originally belonged to my Great Grandfather, Johnny Sargent. Story goes that Johnny’s son (my Grandfather) got to drive this car from Murdo S.D. to Wessington S.D. at the age of 11, when they moved to the farm in the late 1930’s. “The adults herded the livestock and grandpa drove the car”. The shell sat next to the old barn at the family farm my entire life. All, the other old farm cars are shoved into a creek, apparently my grandpa liked the memory of this one enough to let it stay by the barn.

Y O U R

FAVORITE PART OF THE CAR? The nostalgia and the volume.

PLANS FOR THE CAR?

I will eventually get the window regulators working so I can have some side glass when I’m caught in the rain. I also plan to drive it back to the farm, stopping for a beer in Murdo along the way, and get a picture of it next to “the old barn”.

FAVORITE PART OF THE CAR?

My cousins and I played Bonnie and Clyde in it as kids. I came to find out later so did my Dad, aunts, and uncles when they were kids. They’re in their 70s now.

It’s got 2.76 gears and it drives beautifull at 100mph, preferably with earplugs in.

About 5 years ago my Dad and I were joking about ripping the old car out getting it on the road. We thought it would be pretty cool to have a 5th generation car from the 5th generation farm, especially since it’s the car that brought them there.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS?

So, one Father’s Day weekend we ripped her out, and sat her on the trailer. I brought it back to my shop (Sargent Garage) in Rapid City, and started collecting parts. I sourced the drive-train from Wattys Garage, Sloan Shorb built us a floor and firewall, R&D Chassis and Amiotte Racing made it rock & roll! We did the finish work at our shop, and had Eldon Amero put the final touches on her, in the form of aged door art. Sargent Garage with the original Sargent Farms cattle brand in the center, and added “Johnny” to the driver’s side roof. I’ve put almost 4,000 miles on this car in 3 summers and it’s an absolute blast to drive. With open headers and only a windshield for glass it really makes for a great ride. I hope the farm and the hotrod continue on for generations to come.

By: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration How well do you take care of your tires? Do you keep them properly inflated? Do you check to see if they're worn? How much do you know about basic tire maintenance and its impact on safety and fuel consumption? If you care about your safety and about saving money, it's important to understand how tires affect your vehicle’s performance. Properly inflating your tires can save you as much as 11 cents per gallon on fuel. Yet, only 19 percent of consumers properly inflate their tires. That means four out of five consumers are wasting money because of underinflated tires! In addition to proper tire inflation, optimal tire maintenance such as rotation, balance, and alignment can help your tires last longer, which will in turn save you money. In fact, properly inflated tires can extend the average life of a tire by 4,700 miles.

TIRE MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR SAFETY & SAVINGS Tire Pressure

Proper tire pressure is the most important part of maintaining your tires. It affects safety, their durability, and your fuel consumption. • Check the pressure of all tires, including your spare, at least once a month when the tires are "cold," meaning that the car hasn't been driven for at least three hours. • Your tires' proper tire inflation pressure—measured in both kilopascals (kPA) and pounds per square inch (PSI or psi)—can be found on the Tire and Loading Information Label on the driver's side door edge or in your owner's manual. • Keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle. A tire can suddenly lose pressure if you drive over a pothole or bump into a curb when you park. • Newer vehicles have Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, but these only activate a warning when a tire is significantly underinflated. Conduct a monthly tire pressure check to ensure your tires are always properly inflated. 38 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

Tire Tread

Tire Ro tation

Tire tread provides the gripping action and traction that prevents your car or truck from slipping and sliding, especially when the road is icy or wet. Tires are not safe and should be replaced when the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch.

• Rotating your tires can help reduce irregular wear, which will help your tires last longer and maintain fuel efficiency. • Check your owner's manual for information on how frequently the tires on your vehicle should be rotated and the best pattern for rotation.

• Check your tire's tread at least once a month when you're checking their pressure.

• If recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles or sooner if uneven wear appears.

• Tires have built-in "treadwear indicators," which are raised sections that run in between the tire's tread. When the tread is worn down so that it's level with the tread indicator, it's time to replace your tires.

• For some vehicles, tire rotation is not recommended. If your front and rear tires are different sizes, you may not be able to rotate your tires. Check your owner's manual for guidance.

• You can also check your tread by placing a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, replace your tires.

Balance & Alignment

Tire Size

Having your tires balanced and a wheel alignment performed by a qualified technician is important for the safety of your vehicle and maximizes the life of your tires.

To maintain tire safety, purchase new tires that are the same size as the vehicle's original tires or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Check your owner's manual or the Tire and Loading Information Label located on the driver's side door edge or post to find the correct size for your car or truck. If you have any doubt about the correct size to choose, consult with a tire dealer.

• Tire balancing ensures your wheels rotate properly and don't cause the vehicle to shake or vibrate. New tires should always be balanced when installed.

Poor tire maintenance including not having enough air in your tires or failing to rotate your tires is avoidable. Tire safety and savings starts with a little extra care by tending to your tires regularly.

• A wheel alignment lengthens the life of your tires and prevents your car from veering to the right or left when driving on a straight, level road.

TUNE-IN AND TUNE-UP!

®

with The Motor Medics ® Shannon Nordstrom, Russ “The Super Tech” Evans, and Chris Carter

Dear Motor Medics, I’m thinking about purchasing a “green” vehicle, either a Hybrid or totally electric design but I don’t know where to begin. I’ll be using this as a second car but hope to use it as much as possible and I will likely purchase one that is new or less than a year old. Can you help me understand some of the differences between the two and give me ideas on what to consider?

Dear Motor Medics, My Dodge Caravan is five years old, and I just don’t seem to be able to see the road like I used to. The lenses are still clear, and I’ve had them adjusted but I don’t see well at all. We also have a Cadillac that has those tiny round headlights, and I can see great while driving it. Is there anything I can do to my van to get the same light out of it that the car has? I see cars with those bright lights that blind me when I drive. Can those be legal? I don’t want to blind people, I just want to see well.

Gary Lincoln, NE

Glenna in Illinois

Dear Gary, The first thing to consider when purchasing either one is how it will be used. As a second car you have the luxury of using your other car for long trips. With the Hybrid this would not be a problem, but with a fully electric car this would be a showstopper. Hybrid Vehicles all have an internal combustion engine combined with an electric motor that shares the load in part to save fuel while Electric Vehicles must be recharged when exhausted. If the Hybrid runs low on electricity it can rely on the engine, which if low on fuel can easily be refilled at the gas station. If you run out of juice on the Electric Vehicle, it means a tow. Before purchasing either model we suggest you spend considerable time researching both options. There are many people who swear by their “green” vehicles and would never go back to a conventional car, others swear at them. Research is crucial.

Dear Glenna, There is a major difference in lighting systems between your two vehicles. The van uses headlight technology that has been used since the Model T; it has been refined a bit with better reflectors and bulbs, but still has limits. The Cadillac uses H.I.D lamps. High intensity discharge lamps are comprised of special ballasts and bulbs and a focusing projector lens to send the high-power light to the road immediately in front of you and not into oncoming vehicle’s eyes. You can upgrade to a better conventional bulb in the van, but legally you can’t use H.I.D bulbs without the projector-type lens because it will blind other drivers. Aftermarket projector lenses are available for some vehicles, but not the van as far as we know. Take care, The Motor Medics
