SPRING PLANTING PREP for your yard and garden

Spring is around the corner. The birds are beginning to sing and the days are finally longer! If you haven’t already been dreaming up your new landscape goals for the season, it’s time to start now.

Erik Helland is the president and owner of Landscape Garden Centers in Sioux Falls. Part of the original “Lakeland Nurseries,” Erik has been involved in the business for more than 20 years. He smiles, “I have picked nails and pulled weeds and planted everything imaginable since my family moved to the area in 1977. I grew up at the store.”

What started as a simple garden center has grown into the region’s premier greenhouse and landscape services provider. It’s no question that they know a thing or two about preparing your yard and garden for the planting season.

Before beginning any work, the first step is identifying where. “Look to see what other objects or things will affect the area you want to plant or install the shrub, perennial, or tree,” Erik explains. Some things to consider include the available shade that currently exists in the area and what kind of sunlight will be available throughout the day.

During that first step, take a pair of clippers or pruners with you as it’s generally a good time to see what else needs to be trimmed before blooming begins. Erik adds that while you’re scouting for the perfect location, “Sometimes, you may also be able to see where rabbits, deer, or squirrels have damaged existing plant material. These specific areas may need to be trimmed or cut out because the plant has become weakened from damage caused by animals or even weather.”

The time to start is now. Once the plants begin to bloom, it becomes more difficult to see and remove the dead or damaged limbs. After clearing your existing greenery and identifying where you want to add your new plants the selection process begins.

Choosing the correct plant. Selecting what type of plant you want to have in your landscaping can depend on a few variables. Based on the area you allotted, how large should the plant be at full growth? Do you want flowers at any point in the year? What do you want the plant to look like during the winter months? These are just a few questions to consider.

“There are a lot of choices and many options,” Erik says. “Plants that are native to this area are always a good choice.” Some native plants include Echinacea, Bluestem grass, Amur Maple, and Bur Oak.

Erik continues, “There are many other varieties of plants that have been developed from the native species and have been tested that will also do very well in our area but may have different growth habits or characteristics.”

When to begin the planting. Jokingly, Erik says the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. In reality, the next best time to plant is now. Why delay? “There are better times throughout the season when the ground is not frozen to plant, but the window can be so small that it becomes impossible to match personal schedules and weather,” he explains. Generally speaking, anytime from early spring to late fall is when to start planting your trees depending on the variety you selected.

Basics of caring for your plants. When it comes to maintenance, a lot comes into play. From weather to mulch or soil conditions, watering, and correct sunlight, it’s important to read up on what your specific plant needs to thrive. The number one thing in Erik’s eyes is the amount of water your plant has. He adds, “The reason we see annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs fail is because there is too much water. All plant material likes to have well drained soil, but in our area the soil is very heavy which prevents proper drainage in a lot of cases.”

Back in the planning stage, you can test your planting site to check your soil drainage. The rule of thumb is that there should be no standing water within 48 hours. Erik suggests, “Test the holes by filling them with water and make sure they drain within the timeframe. If they do not drain, then you may need to find a different place to plant or create a drainage system so the water drains away from the root zone within 48 hours.”

If you are ready to start your next landscaping project, or just want to know where to buy the best greenery in town, visit Erik and his team or view their website at www.LandscapeGardenCenters.com.
