PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

In the intricate dance of interior and exterior design, lighting often takes a backseat, overshadowed by more tangible elements like furniture or paint colors. However, its significance cannot be overstated. Lighting is not merely a functional necessity but a powerful tool that can transform spaces, evoke emotions, and highlight architectural features. Let’s delve into the profound impact lighting has on both the ambiance and functionality of a home.

Setting the Scene: Enhancing Mood and Functionality

Picture this: a cozy living room bathed in warm, inviting light, beckoning you to unwind after a long day. Or a well-lit kitchen where every culinary masterpiece is expertly crafted under the glow of task lighting. Lighting sets the mood, creating ambiance that can make or break the atmosphere of a room.

Task lighting, with its focused illumination directed towards specific areas, whether it’s reading a book in a snug corner or chopping vegetables on the kitchen counter, task lighting ensures optimal visibility and efficiency.

Accentuating the Highlights: Adding Depth

Just as a painter uses light and shadow to create depth in a masterpiece, lighting designers use accent lighting to accentuate the highlights of a space. Accent lighting is the spotlight that draws attention to architectural details, cherished artworks, or statement pieces of furniture.

Imagine a strategically placed spotlight casting a warm glow on a beloved painting, elevating its beauty and significance. Or a series of recessed lights tracing the elegant contours of a sculptural staircase, transforming it into a focal point of the home. Accent lighting adds layers of visual interest, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of a space.

Embracing the Future: The Rise of Smart Lighting Systems

In the age of technological advancement, lighting has taken a quantum leap forward with the advent of smart home lighting systems. These intelligent systems are not just about convenience; they represent a paradigm shift in how we interact with and control lighting in our homes.

Smart lighting systems leverage sensors and automation to detect occupancy and adjust lighting levels, accordingly, optimizing energy usage and reducing costs. Imagine lights that automatically dim when natural sunlight floods the room, or fixtures that respond to voice commands, creating a seamless and intuitive lighting experience.

When embarking on your design project, remember to give lighting the attention it deserves. For in the gentle glow of a well-lit room lies the true essence of architectural beauty and human comfort.

YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR LIGHTING with ease

Sioux Falls TrimLight ends the annual hassle of putting up and taking down Christmas lights with an innovative, permanent exterior system that provides festive lighting for any occasion that is easy to control on a phone or smart device.

Sioux Falls TrimLight offers lighting options for businesses, homes and outdoor living spaces such as decks, pergolas, gazebos and patios. TrimLight’s patented system includes 16 million color options, plus animation and music customers can set for any holiday, sporting event or special celebration in their lives.

Chris Weeg liked the TrimLight system so much when he was looking for exterior lighting that he opened his franchise, Sioux Falls TrimLight, two years ago.

“I was looking for some sort of outdoor lighting to put on a pergola,” Chris said. “I was looking for an outdoor type of weatherproofed rope lighting or strip lighting, and then I found this product, and it caught my attention. There’s nothing like TrimLight in this area.”

TrimLight is a nationally recognized brand founded 13 years ago in Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s the first permanent light company in the United States, and TrimLight franchises are located nationwide. Sioux Falls TrimLight is one of three TrimLight franchises in South Dakota. Sioux Falls TrimLight serves Sioux Falls, Yankton and a 60-mile area around Sioux Falls.

“Our main slogan is, “It’s made for life’s moments,” he said. “It’s not only for Christmas. Personally, I use TrimLight for my kids’ sporting events. We rock the middle school colors. … So many people have told me ‘I thought I’d only use them for Christmas, but I never shut them off.’ (They’re) always putting different colors up for accent lighting.”

“This appeals to people that are tired of getting on ladders, putting up and taking down lights or paying people to put up lights, only to get to use them for two months and then take them down and store them,” Chris said.

In eastern South Dakota, where temperatures can span from triple digits in the summer months to well below freezing in the winter months, TrimLight’s system is built to withstand the weather.

wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 7
8 n March 2024

The lighting is on a track system that’s mounted underneath a building’s soffit. Bulbs are spaced 6, 9 or 12 inches apart, depending on the customer’s preference, and the system runs through a control box that’s placed in a customer’s garage, Chris said.

“The beauty about them being installed on the bottom side of the soffit is it protects (the lighting system) from the sun, ice, and rain,” Chris said.

The lighting system comes in more than 180 colors to match the exterior of a home or building, and it’s barely noticeable in daylight because all that’s visible is about 1/4 inch of the bulbs that stick out of the track.

“One thing that sets us apart is that our design is seamless with your home, so it looks like it was always meant to be there. It doesn’t look like something was added on after the fact,” Chris said.

“TrimLight systems come with a lifetime warranty on parts and a five-year warranty on labor,” Chris said.

Chris said customers love the versatility of the TrimLight system. Many homeowners use the lighting for security as well as holidays and special occasions. A customer’s entire lighting system can be controlled with a free app that can be downloaded on a smartphone or any smart device.

Bulbs can be set on timers. “For example,” Chris said, “during the holiday season Christmas lighting could be programmed

wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 9

for 6 to 10 p.m., and then security lighting could be programmed from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., and customers can set different lighting schedules for each day. The bulbs can be programmed to highlight certain parts of a home for a customized security lighting system.”

“The lights are all dimmable. You can change how bright they are,” Chris said. “TrimLight actually just came out with a new light for residential (use) called our 3L light, so we can now produce the same brightness as a commercial light in a residential light.”

For security or to enhance a special feature on a home or business property, TrimLight offers downlighting that has the same color, animation and music options as their track lighting systems.

“We can highlight certain corners of your home,” Chris said. “It’s like a can light. It’s a little bit bigger and brighter, and the light reflects off your home more. A lot of people use it for security or if they’ve got a beautiful sign or something they want to light up at night.”

If you’re thinking about enhancing your outdoor living spaces, TrimLight’s globe lighting is made for areas such as patios, pergolas and near hot tubs and swimming pools.

Chris said he and his crews are typically booked one to two months in advance and by September, the business’ schedule is full. If you’re considering any kind of TrimLight system, contact Sioux Falls TrimLight now for more information. Financing is available. Building a Home

Turning a house into your home can be a difficult task for some. But Ronning Companies in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, does just that. For nearly 70 years, they’ve been crafting beautiful creations for any homeowner.

This home at 2800 South Faith Avenue is no exception. Located in the Copper Creek Heights neighborhood on the east side of Sioux Falls, the 2,172 square-foot home sparks your interest from the moment you walk up to it.

“It’s a different floor plan than what I’ve used in the past,” says Paul Westra, a builder for Ronning Companies. “It’s a really cool, modified two-story home. The first thing you notice when you walk up is three separate garage doors. That gives it a bit more eyeball appeal and opens the front of the house up really nicely.”

Beautiful blue grays bring this house to light and welcome you in. Stepping through the threshold, huge 18-foot-tall ceilings soar above you from the living room area as natural light from the floor to ceiling windows from Andersen Windows floods in.

“You just get this really incredible view out to the backyard. Whether you’re sitting in the living room, kitchen or dining room area, or walking up the stairs to the second floor, you’ve just got the most beautiful views,” Westra shares.

Catching your eye along the wall is a unique three-sided, seven-foot-wide electric glass fireplace from Hebron Brick Supply - Sioux Falls.

NOT A HOUSE

“That’s my focal point on that north wall. It’s so cool because you can make the flame taller or smaller or even change the color as well. Not only does it set the ambiance, but it warms you up as well.”

Beautifully accentuating the fireplace is a custom mantle above it which matches the shelves in the kitchen.

“I really wanted to tie this big, open space together,” says Paul. “Then, you can put your TV above the mantle, and it just creates this really great space to gather. It’s kind of the focal point of the home.”

Maple hardwood floors finished in Morning Brume from Dakota Floors gracefully guide us to the kitchen where once again something catches our eye: a gorgeous, green painted island.

“This is the first time in my 20 plus years that I’ve ever used this color and it turned out incredible. I wanted to make the kitchen a real focal point of the home as well. When you come in from the front door and walk to the living room, your eye is just suddenly drawn to the kitchen because of that green island. It was very deliberately done, and it turned out really nice,” Paul explains.

Those earthly green tones are found throughout the home from the gray greens of the walls to the front half-bath.

“Right as you enter the home, there’s a half-bath to your left. I wanted to put that color in here as well to really tie

pieces of the house together again. The house itself really takes on this green, airy vibe to it.”

Highlighting those features are the white maple cabinets by StarMark Cabinetry, the white quartz countertops from Granite Accents., and the brushed nickel hardware – all creating a crisp, airy feel to this room.

To the right, step into the huge walk-in pantry tucked conveniently behind a barn door. With plenty of storage, you’ll never have to worry if you have the perfect ingredient. Off the kitchen, in route to the garage you’ll find the mud room and laundry room with plenty of storage.

As we make our way back to the front of the house, we head down the short hallway to the master suite. 12-foot vaulted ceilings and plush carpet from Carpet Land greet you here as a plethora of natural light once again floods in. Looking to find the perfect outfit? No problem with this large his-and-her master closet from Save Our Space.

Ceramic flooring guides your tired feet to the beautiful custom tile shower. Plenty of space is found here too, with dual sinks incorporated within the granite countertops by Granite Accents.

It’s time to make our way up to the second floor. As you climb the stairs, to your left you’ll find two more very large bedrooms looking to the east. The final bathroom in this two-and-a-half bath home is located on the second floor and features more of those beautiful

wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 23

finishes and materials found in the rest of the home. Take a load off your feet as you soak away all your troubles in the stylish bathtub within.

Looking for a bonus feature? Look no further than the second-floor loft. Located above the garage and off the bathroom, you’ll find your soon-to-be favorite hangout spot.

“This is a really unique space,” says Paul. “It’s not really considered a bedroom because it doesn’t have a closet, but it could definitely be turned into that. Right now, it’s this cool spot for a TV room or playroom for the kids. You could also turn it into a his-and-her office. It’s a huge room, so there’s so many possibilities of what it could be!”

With all these great features, can you believe we aren’t done yet? This three-bedroom home offers more space in the unfinished basement.

“You have the option to put in two more bedrooms, a full-size bathroom and a HUGE family room down here. Plus, it has access to the walk-out covered patio.”

One thing is for sure. Once you get inside, the stage is set to make someone an absolutely incredible home.

ON TREND

INTERIOR TRENDS FOR 2024

CHUNKY CHAINS

Chains are a traditional detail that designers gave a modern twist this season, primarily by playing with scale.

RING CHANDELIERS

Take the classic ring chandelier, which seemed to be the darling of the lighting world this season. Many designers streamlined them by swapping candelabra-style lights for integral LEDs that virtually disappear within the fixture.

30 n March 2024

ON TREND

MATTE WHITE FINISHES

Matte white finishes continue to be on trend, for at least the fourth season running. Some table lamps show off a bumpy texture that is popular among the matte white lamp bases.

WOVEN AND BEADED CONSTRUCTION AND NOVEL NATURALS

Another familiar trend was woven and beaded lighting made of natural materials like wood, grasses and ceramic in their raw, rustic-looking state. But as the trend evolves, we’re seeing those materials in refined, fresh-looking ways, with the materials themselves sometimes given a novel look.

wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 31

ON TREND

GORGEOUS GLASS

CORDLESS CUTIES

Rechargeable LED lights make up a growing category of lighting. Some come with a charging cord and USB adapter integrated into the fixture, whereas others sit on a charging base. Some little lamps stay illuminated for more than nine hours and can be used outdoors as well.

Glass is hardly new to the lighting world, yet somehow designers continue to make it look new and exciting.

32 n March 2024

ON TREND

INDIRECT LIGHTING

Some chandeliers have plates that face upward, directing the light to the ceiling. The reflected light then creates a warm, even glow. The so-called indirect lighting — though, again, not a new invention — was popular this season both in chandeliers and sconces.

ADJUSTABLE TEMPS

We’ve already mentioned how LEDs are revolutionizing lighting, allowing for slimmer, barely there fixtures in shapes limited only by the imagination. But LEDs are also exciting for their function. Tunable LED lights — which allow users to adjust the color warmth of the light, not just the brightness — are a growing trend in interiors.

BRINGING THE FEELING OF SPRING

Spring feels like it’s in the air with this home by Nielson Construction at 5417 East Brennan Drive. Located on the northeast side of Sioux Falls South Dakota, this five-bed, three-bathroom home has easy access to I-90 and the Dawley Farms area with plenty of restaurants and shopping.

The home’s exterior gray siding by Scott’s Lumber accentuates the modern features from the stone accents to the peaks.

Stepping through the front door, natural light from the picture window by Scott’s Lumber immediately basks you from the floor to the 8-foot plus vaulted ceilings.

“That’s just such an incredible space,” says Amy Evans, Sales Manager with Nielson Construction and realtor at House2Home. “Those extra-large windows really allow the most natural light to envelope the large living room, dining room and kitchen area.”

Picturesque views await you out the window overlooking rolling hills and a creek.

“No backyard neighbors! What a plus. It’s just an incredible view back there and the deck just adds a great entertainment area as well,” Amy adds.

Stepping back inside the home, the living room is open to the kitchen and dining room area. Five-point Infinity carpet from

Carpet One seamlessly outlines and anchors the living room giving you some separation. However, your eyes are immediately drawn to the 9-foot-long island in the kitchen.

“You just have an incredible amount of space and seating here,” says Amy. “It gives you that working countertop space with the kitchen in the island, as well as an entertainment space.”

Stunning white quartz with a faint gray veining from Milliron Granite & Quartz covers the kitchen countertops bringing even more light to this space. The white birch cabinets by Kitchens and Windows Unlimited and the white subway backsplash beautifully complement the black birch cabinets in the kitchen island. Charming black and gold detailed pendant lighting fixtures from Bulb Lighting and Design hang above the island giving this space an elevated look.

“This space is really a showstopper. It’s the perfect entertainment space in one area.”

Gorgeous, LVP flooring in a muted lighthouse shade guides us past the kitchen to the right side of the home where we find the master suite. That five-point Infinity carpet greets us here once again. Tray ceilings bring extra height to this room as natural light floods into this space. You won’t rest here for long before the cascading water from the master bathroom calls to your soul.

40 n March 2024

Stepping through the walk-in closet with shelving by Save Our Space, ceramic white tile with light gray veining throughout lines the floor and the walls of the shower. Rectangular tile accents the walls and the floor of the walk-in shower. The luxurious vibes don’t stop here. Black accent hardware and white birch cabinets tie this room together seamlessly with the kitchen. Onyx cashmere countertops by Milliron Granite & Quartz create a simple, yet beautiful look.

“It gives you that same hardness of quartz but with this, your sink is integrated into it. That creates ease for cleaning,” says Amy.

Conveniently located off the master suite, the laundry room and mudroom connect to the three-stall garage. Walking past the living room and kitchen area, we find two other bedrooms and a bathroom. Those beautiful white birch cabinets and onyx cashmere countertops are found here once again.

“We really love to tie similar colors and materials together throughout the home. I think it gives it this really beautiful and cohesive look that I think a lot of homeowners are looking for,” shares Amy.

Next, let’s make our way to the lower level of the home. A custom-made metal railing by Wynia’s Custom Handrails guides

us seamlessly down to the basement. 8-foot ceilings stand tall in this huge living space perfect for entertaining friends and family.

“You also get more of those beautiful views of the rolling hills and creek back here from the concrete patio. I just can’t get enough of that view,” says Amy.

One more bathroom and two more large bedrooms, one with a walk-in closet and the other with a standard one, are found down here.

With so much beautiful space in this 2,516-square foot home and updated finishes, it’s sure to bring that pop of color and brightness just in time for spring.

THE 6 MAIN TYPES OF LIGHTING & HOW TO USE THEM IN YOUR HOME

Lighting plays an essential role in home decorating. More than an accessory, the right lighting illuminates the interior design, bringing your home’s best features into view.

Home lighting involves six basic lighting types—ambient, ceiling-mounted, task, dining, outdoor, and decorative. Take a closer look at all of these lighting types and how they can enhance every room in your house.

1. Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting sets the mood of a room. It’s the most dominant lighting in a space and usually turns on with a flip of a switch. Ambient lighting illuminates a room while remaining inconspicuous, never calling attention to itself. Consider it an omnipotent option, usually showering light from above. There are a few fixtures that provide ambient lighting that you can choose from.

Floor Lamps

Floor lamps offer homeowners the ability to light a room without installing overhead lighting, which can clash with contemporary or modern interior design. Floor lamps are also an excellent ambient light option for twostory rooms or spaces with hard-to-reach vaulted ceilings.

2. Ceiling-Mounted Lights

Ceiling-mounted lights provide the most light in a room, and they can be flush or semi-flush with the ceiling. Flush fixtures are usually dome-shaped and touch the ceiling. Semi-flush lighting leaves a small gap between the ceiling and the fixture, creating an uplit reflection. Outside of natural sunlight, ceiling-mounted fixtures are the best choice for flooding a room with light.

Track Lighting

Track lighting provides flexibility, especially if each light fixture is adjustable. This allows you to point lighting at different areas in a room, similar to how lighting directors might illuminate a stage.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the direction of each light in your track lighting fixture. For example, adjust individual heads on a fixed track light to highlight dishes behind a glass cabinet door, a statue in a niche, or a book collection on a shelf.

3. Task Lighting

As the name suggests, task lighting illuminates areas where you perform certain tasks, such as food preparation, reading, writing, sewing, or playing video games. This type of lighting is best if it’s glare-free and bright enough for you to perform the job at hand.

Task lighting can include lights under a kitchen cabinet, mounted above counters, or even beneath base cabinets. Fun fact: Desk lamps and floor lamps are portable task lighting that work in rooms like the kitchen too.

Under-Cabinet Lights

When it comes to task lighting in the kitchen, under-cabinet lights shine (literally). Under-cabinet lights can enhance food preparation, illuminate a coffee bar, or highlight a backsplash. This type of light can use LED puck lights, tape lighting, bar lights, or fluorescent bar lights.

4. Dining Lighting

Creating an inviting atmosphere in the dining area takes some thoughtful consideration about your lighting choices. Dining lighting is functional and also can contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. Two popular options for dining lighting are chandeliers and pendants, each offering a unique blend of style and illumination to enhance the dining experience.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers, which are hung from the ceiling with multiple branches or tiers, are a classic choice for dining rooms. Beyond providing ample illumination for the entire table, chandeliers are striking focal points, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space.

Pendants

Pendant lights, suspended individually or in a group, offer a more customizable approach to dining lighting. Whether hung in a linear arrangement above the dining table or as a cluster to create visual interest, pendant lights provide focused illumination while allowing for creative expression in more modern designs.

5. Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting is crucial in both functional and aesthetic aspects of exterior spaces. From enhancing safety to creating a welcoming atmosphere once the sun has set, outdoor lighting options offer many benefits to the outside of your home.

Landscape Lighting

Incorporating outdoor spotlights and floodlights into your interior design plans can create an exterior focal point for a sunroom, great room, or bedroom with large windows.

6. Decorative Lighting

Decorative lighting is the diva of home lighting, adding attitude to style. Instead of accentuating other objects, decorative lighting brings the spotlight on itself. It’s simply there to look fabulous.

Candelabra Lighting

Candelabras can feature real or faux candles, but the impact is the same: drama. Although associated with traditional design, candelabras also come in contemporary, modern, industrial, and even rustic lighting styles.

Cove Lighting

Cove lighting is installed near the ceiling to highlight architectural detail such as crown molding or a tray ceiling.

Sometimes called ambient luminescence, cove lighting diffuses light and can be iridescent or fluorescent. The proper placement is essential, so consider hiring a lighting professional to install it for you.
