CULTURE CLUB HAPPENINGS, LOCALS & REGIONAL INSIGHTS

About five years ago, I found some notebooks my Mama made detailing my older brother’s treatment in his fight with Leukemia. They were matter of fact, and the handwriting was perfect. Details of treatments, dates, times, locations... Nothing about how she was feeling watching her 8-year-old son battle this disease. Nothing about her fear.

know how she didn’t fall into despair and just stop functioning for the rest of us until Keith got better, but she didn’t. I guess she didn’t have time to dwell. She fought, and so did he, and the family won that battle, and he was healthy again, and we all moved on and lived until some of us didn’t. She rose to those occasions too and put us all back together. That’s just what she does. She takes care of people. Above all, she takes care of hers.

But I can imagine it now that I have children of my own. Her writing those words on paper in the hopes that by putting them somewhere, she could better understand why it was happening. She certainly didn’t deserve it. She’d spent her life being the person she thought her God wanted her to be. She was faithful, caring, and loving. Yet there was her innocent child in pain. I don’t know how she did it. I don’t

So, needless to say, I don’t think there is a more important thing in the world than a Mama, especially mine, and especially the mother of my children. While they are very different, they have a few things in common. Nothing would come between them and their kids. That is an absolute. Nothing. They fight, they are loyal, and they never stop. And I’m lucky to have spent a lot of time around them in the hopes

VOL. 17, ISSUE #385

that some of that will eventually rub off on me. You know? Some of those old sayings are true, no matter how tired we get of hearing them. You only get one. And you don’t get her forever. So this Sunday, make sure you pick up the phone at least, and you give your Mama a squeeze if you can, and do something nice, and say kind words to any Mama you know worth her salt. They all deserve our respect-- even if at times we don’t deserve theirs. To Mama, to Meg, to Ruby Lee, and Mary Julia, and Annis, and Buellah, and Mary Beth, and Anna Liza, and every strong woman that has been there for me. I love you, and Happy Mother’s Day! very state is known for something. Be it legend, lore, or landmarks, there is usually one thing that sticks out in a person’s mind when you simply mention the name of a state. When I say Georgia, many non-native minds will wander to peaches, peanuts, pine trees, pecans, and Gone With the Wind. The first thing that came to my mind when we relocated to Georgia was the red clay mud. Crawford County was a major pottery center in the 1800’s and into the 1930’s. “Jug Makers” from the Long, Merritt, Becham, Averett, Yaughn, Marshall, Bryant, and Pyles families shipped their handmade churns, storage jars, jugs, bowls, pitchers and more all over the southeast. Artists come from all over the country to use Crawford County Georgia’s kiln and clay. A predominate theme you will notice throughout the grounds are tables full of “face jugs”-- jugs with contorted faces, bulging eyes, crazy mouths, and other eclectic features. According to scholars, the face jug originated in the south with African American slaves who modeled the jugs after themselves for identification in the fields. From there, they were shaped into disfigured and grotesque pieces that held liquor in an effort to deter children from the curiosity of opening and partaking from the jug. In celebration of this pottery-making heritage, the Georgia Jug Festival was born. This year marks the fourteenth Georgia Jug Fest. The historical three-day event starts Thursday, May 17th at 7pm with a preview party and Potter’s Hall of Fame Induction, followed by a “Lunch and Learn” event on pottery and quilting that begins noon on Friday. Saturday is the day you will not want to miss, though. Start your day off by running in the 5K, end it at the wood fired kiln sale, pottery and handcrafted pieces of art, heritage skills demonstrations, quilt show, children’s activities, tours, exhibits, art show, live musical entertainment, BBQ, lawn mower races, auction, and more. WHEW! That’s a lot of activities!! ASHLEY DOOLIN

In honor of Mother’s Day, What did your mama teach you?

Better to be a smartass than a dumbass! - Neal F. Hold your daughter’s hand as she becomes a teen. If you won’t some other guy will. - Chris B. Best: If a man ever hits you, it’s ok to shoot him. Worst: If a man ever hits you, it’s ok to shoot him. Most Helpful: If you believe you can do it, everyone else will too. - Stacey L. Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian anymore than standing in your garage makes you a car. Not to judge. The only perfect person was the Big JC, and we’re not him. - Ashley D. Pretty is as pretty does. - Patti C. Mines say stand up for yourself. I still work on it, but I got that to work with. Love you mom. - Larry S.

If people didn’t want to be made fun of, they wouldn’t walk around looking and acting like they do. - Shane W. Not my momma, but the War and Treaty’s Grandmama taught me “a hit dog will holler.” - Ashley D. Always be respectful. And love your family regardless. Never got bad advice. - Mike B. You good enough, smart enough, and dog gonnit people like you!!! - Mark M. It’s not what they call you, it’s what you awnser to. - Lacey A. Soap is cheap, there’s no excuse for being dirty. Best advice while pursuing my passions: “Big steps are little steps seen from a distance” -Lou Warren knows her stuff. - Louise W. Always wear lipstick, coordinate your accessories, be good to your man, your children are your world, always act like a lady, only use Tide, and never hang up on your mama! - Jessica C. “So, I’ve been in Macon for about 18 years. Yeah. I can’t believe it, but you know, I moved to Macon thinking, ‘Ohhh, this is too small a place for me. I have to have a city. I just can’t…’ I just didn’t think I fit in. Now, I love it. I just had to find my community. And I love living downtown. I’m very happy here. I love Mercer. They’re always lectures and concerts and art exhibits. There’s just so much stimulating stuff going on. I loooooove the downtown. I wouldn’t live anywhere else but downtown. I think the community is strong here. We just get a lot of artistic, creative, interesting people who live here. I like the old houses, the history. When I first moved here, everyone scared me away, ‘Don’t live downtown. It’s dangerous.’ I don’t feel that way at all. I’m awful at talking. If you ask me questions, I’ll be able to talk about them. But, I’m just the type of person that, like, if you put me at a party with a bunch of people, I gravitate to the food table. I just…It’s just so hard for me to think of things to 12 MAY 11 - 25, 2018

talk about. And I feel more comfortable writing than I do speaking. I have more control when I’m writing than when I am speaking. I love the beauty of words and the sounds. Like, when I think of myself, I’ve just always thought of myself as a writer. ‘I’m a poet.’ It’s very…at the heart of who I am. You need to be constantly reading. The problem is that people aren’t reading. I think that’s really a tragedy in our culture, because writers speak truth. And, they speak truth to power. We as a culture have to get back to valuing writing and the written word and sharing it in a really complex way, not just 140-characters, or whatever twitter is…working through ideas. — Yes, my tichel! I order them from an Orthodox Jewish woman in Israel who makes them. You know I didn’t want to look like, when I went out, ‘Ohhhh, there’s someone with cancer.’ I wanted to make some kind of statement, like, ‘Here I am. And, I’m in a crappy situation. I’m not in a good situation. But I want to look pretty, you know,

and still look like I’m confident self.’ I just feel equipped. It’s like my armor. And I can deal with people staring at me and giving me weird looks. ‘Is she Muslim?’ or ‘Does she have cancer?’ Or ‘Is she just being weird?’ It has really helped, because losing my hair was really hard. I was first diagnosed in 2004.... I decided to make it my mission. I decided to show women, you know what, you shouldn’t be ashamed of not having any hair. Especially young women…they don’t have to feel ashamed. They should just take ownership of their lives. And…taking ownership of your appearance is part of taking ownership of your life. Saying, ‘Here I am. Accept me the way I am.’ Having cancer is harder [than being a mother] because it’s frightening. But so is being a mother. It’s very clarifying because it forces you to look at your life and ask yourself what’s important. What matters in my life and what doesn’t? Which relationships do I want to spend the most time nurturing? What’s absolutely essential that I get done? You just can’t waste any time. I have to very consciously be aware of the moment.

DAYTRIPPER

DISNEY WORLD FOR GROWN-UPS Tony & Ashley Doolin have perfected the grown-up weekend get-away to the Magical Kingdom, and share their favorite watering holes, themed restaurants and shopping destinations. Webster defines a “fanatic” as a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause. I have this definition memorized because my wife is a textbook example of a fanatic-- for all things Disney. So moving to Macon from Kentucky came with its own pros and cons. One of the pros is the fact that I spend far less gas money on a single trip to Disney World. The downside is... I make a lot more trips to Disney World. Let me admit that I like Disney World too. I love the vast array of restaurants, the overall theming, and the attention to detail in the execution that Disney is known for. However, I’m a firm believer that Disney World would be a much better destination without the throngs of mouse ear balloon toting children and the cacophony of whiney noise they bring to the experience. Nothing ruins a relaxing afternoon faster than having your foot crushed beneath the wheels of a speeding stroller driven by an overzealous parent rushing to make sure little Timmy gets in line for Space Mountain thirty seconds faster than they would by strolling at a leisurely pace. In my multiple weekend trips to Disney World, I’ve become something of an expert in having an enjoyable Disney experience without torturing myself with “It’s A Small World” on repeat in my skull or reminding myself why tigers eat their young. So for you, the traveler looking for a magical weekend that doesn’t leave you wanting to throat punch a family of matching Mickey shirt wearing park goers, I’ve compiled a list of things to do at Disney World that do not involve attending any of the four parks. 1.Trader Sam’s- Trader Sam’s is a tiki themed watering hole located in the Polynesian Village. This over-thetop take on a traditional tiki bar offers a menu full of the most amazing rum drinks on the planet. Many of the drinks also come with special effects and a floor show from the bartenders when you order. For instance, when a patron orders the Shrunken Head, the lights go dark and a blacklight collection of shrunken heads dangling from the ceiling come alive. The best part is,

for a nominal fee, you get to keep the souvenir mug. Which is good, because if you drink enough of them, the mug is the only memory you will have of the experience. Trust me on this. Note: Trader Sam’s opens at 4pm daily. Get in line by 3pm if you want to be seated without a minimum one hour wait. 2. Disney Springs- Formerly known as the Downtown Disney area, Disney Springs has distilled a trip to the parks into the purest essence of why Disney World exists in the first place: They want to make that paper, Boo. After a total renovation over the last three years, Disney Springs offers a combination of Disney-themed and big brand shopping. Where else in the world can you buy Under Armor socks, hand rolled cigars, a Harley Davidson leather jacket ,and Mickey Mouse cookie cutters? Disney Springs also features tons of places to eat and drink. If I had to make a suggestion, check out Morimoto Asia from Iron Chef ’s favorite celebrity Masahura Morimoto. 3. Disney Resort Restaurants- There are tons of resorts on Disney property offering a wide variety of dining choices. From quick service options to five star restaurants, there is one to fit your mood. Despite the length of our stay, one restaurant on my list is a must: Boma. Boma is a buffet-style African themed restaurant located in the amazing Jambo House at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The rotating menu features a variety of wood fired meats and traditional African sides. They are known in Disney circles as the only restaurant on property that serves Zebra Domes, a dessert that makes the cut in every Top Ten Disney Dessert list. Personally, I don’t like them. That being said, I will clothesline a senior citizen to get in line for Boma’s Banana Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce. I just drooled on my keyboard. Sorry. Disney World can be THE dream family vacation-- but with a 5 hour travel time, Disney is a great option for an adult weekend getaway as well. You could take the kids and enjoy all of the above, but be forewarned: If you

take little Hailey to Disney without going to a park, she’s gonna spend thousands on therapy later in life trying to come to grips with the fact that Mommy and Daddy took her to “The Happiest Place On Earth” and spent the weekend getting lit at a tiki bar that didn’t include a photo op with a rodent in a tuxedo.

Meter’s Running

Downtown parking in Macon as you know it is about to change. Here’s what’s coming next. Oh, the hateful parking meter. Who among us doesn’t despise that eater of quarters and dirty little clock-watching keeper of time? At the end of the day, that’s really it isn’t it? It’s not so much that parking meters gulp down your coin like a bunch of damned goldfish in a koi pond. Mais non. It’s that a machine has a say in when you come and whence you go. But such is progress. And such is life in a thriving urban core where space in general is at a premium. While occasionally inconvenient, that’s also what makes city centers so uniquely beautiful–- particularly those in the South that have survived enough seasons to know that storefronts may come and go, but streetscapes last forever. A density of architecture that neither time nor recession nor gentrification has managed to erode; inviting little shops and favored watering holes with cool window views. Streetlight-strewn alleys and whatnot– these are the hallmarks of a thriving downtown. Macon has all those funky little nuances– as well as a cast of quirky regulars to help keep things colorful (the woman always dressed in floor-length gowns carrying a doll baby and the guy in the paper Burger King crown are notable favorites). If that’s not a Southern downtown, I don’t’ know what. And soon, the urban core will be receiving a less welcome fixture– paid parking. Creating walkable, cohesive city centers has served plenty of other Southern cities– Athens, Greenville, Charleston among them. The kinds of “cities we aspire to,” as Alex Morrison puts it. Morrison, who serves as the executive director of the Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority (MBCUDA), has been the guy on the hot seat for the last little minute– at least when it comes to paid park16 MAY 11 - 25, 2018

ing’s impending arrival downtown. Looking at the big picture, however, and knowing what the ultimate possible pay-off could be for Macon’s tax base is the sugar that will, hopefully, help the medicine go down, he says.

Piggy Banks on Poles

Meters previously installed in downtown Macon were yanked in 1983 in a bid by then city leaders to entice more consumers to the downtown area. It didn’t work. Fast forward to 2015 and a new crop of local leaders collaborated to create a 160-plus page action plan to turn the boat around. The Macon Action Plan for the Heart of Macon (MAP), finalized in 2015, prominently details pain points in “the parking situation” downtown, while peppering suggested remedies throughout as a means of cultivating the kind of connectivity that has proven successful in other comparable cities. Statistically, he’s right. A combination of direct and induced dollars flowing in from a balance of residents, tourists, and “after 5” fun-seekers has been a recipe for success in such cities as Savannah, Asheville, and Athens. Those have at least one thing in common: They all have parking meters. By the time these words are printed, Macon will too. Alex says 850 or so parking meters destined to be placed on poles in downtown Macon are expected to have shipped from the manufacturer in Nova Scotia. The meters are part of a managed parking plan developed and implemented by the MBCUDA since 2016. As part of the current phase, metered parking areas will be installed throughout the city center’s core grid, from First Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., as well as on Mulberry, Cherry, and Poplar Streets, Alex says. Free on-street spaces will be available in most areas, towards

the downtown area’s outer perimeters along the grid. Costs will be $1.25 per hour with a time-limit of up to 3 hours– a turn-over nudging measure to keep parking space inventory churning, he adds. Currently, downtown Macon has more than 26,000 employees, 1,000 residents, and 3,000 non-hospital specific folks to accommodate on a regular basis, and only 1,250 free parking spaces to serve them. The sheer math of that is tough to argue– not that it’s stopped anybody. Though the plan for paid parking has been in the works for more than 2 years, its long-awaited fruition seems to have unleashed the Great Parkapocalypse of 2018, with the fusillades coming fast and furious across news stories and social media, Facebook in particular. Everyone appears to have an opinion-- from stakeholders that include in-city dwellers, downtown workers, everyday commuters, business owners, and other assorted taxpayers to would-be and acting public officials. The post-rankers at News Break estimate that “over 38%” of users in Macon have weighed in on parking meters on social media, and a recent straw poll on The 11th Hour’s Facebook page drew an unusually large number of responses. “Merely piggy banks on poles,” writes Jimmy S., while an outraged Robert W. chimed in with an alarming number of exclamation points per capita: “They said 800 THOUSAND dollars for meters? Another million we don’t have!!! I guess property tax increase again!!!! RUNNING people out!!!!!!” On the other side of the street, Bill A. countered with, “Reading these comments makes it seem as though parking will be $20/hr. If you’re unwilling or cannot pay $3 - $5 to park, I don’t think you’re the person to which downtown businesses are catering. I think

this is long overdue and I’ll be happy to pay a couple dollars to park on the street.” District 2 County Commission candidate Mike Horner concurred, posting: “Downtown has reached the point where on a busy night it is almost impossible to find parking. This is the next step for a city that has growing and thriving downtown. Folks will park on the street and leave their car all day, so this is needed-- not to generate money but to generate turnover in the parking spots. I don’t think $1.50 or whatever for an hour of parking is going to deter anyone from coming downtown.”

Put a Dollar in the Kitty

Those attending events, grabbing dinner and a show, and daycationers will also have the option of parking decks that offer day rates. Currently, there are three, according to listings included on the NewTown Macon website: 427 Poplar Street, 577 Mulberry Street, and 440 Mulberry Street. Two of those – the deck located at 440 Mulberry and, more recently, the facility on Poplar – will be managed by Lanier Parking Services, an Atlanta-based company the MBCUDA contracted with in 2017. Lanier is expected to provide professional parking management services for Macon-Bibb’s public parking facilities, compliance enforcement for on and off-street parking, improve quality controls and customer service across the board, and collect revenues. Lanier, which has already set up office space in the Dempsey, located on Cherry Street, will also be responsible for implementing residential permit parking, Alex says. Loft dwellers and other downtown residents will have the option of street parking – for $150 a year. To

be clear, that cost doesn’t come with the guarantee of earmarked spaces. A second, and ideally preferable, option will include a 50% discount off monthly rates for off-street parking, Alex says. In addition to the two on Mulberry and the structure at Poplar, decks are also located at 525 Mulberry St, 425 Third Street, and 334 Third Street. The discounted fees – which range in the neighborhood of $20 to $70– are incentives to fully utilize existing facilities and keep curbside turn-over hopping, Alex says. “Users are spiking, but we don’t have parking spaces spiking,” he says, adding that off-street parking structures currently accommodating the downtown area only about 50% occupied in some cases. The current plan is designed to help “push that needle,” Alex insists. “They’ve not been priced appropriately or made enough money to support upkeep since 1983. They’ve been competing with free on-street parking.” While some may continue to complain about shelling out to park in front of their favorite shop or restaurant, the end result will be “a better experience finding parking with better overall facilities, and a better business environment.” Alex says, adding that any monies recouped will be fed back into system to pay off service debt to build new parking facilities and maintain existing ones. As of now, downtown drivers and residents can expect to begin feeding meters and purchasing permits by June 1. By then, Lanier should have time to gear and staff up to manage the changes– including enforcement. Though booting cars that overstay their welcome isn’t in the works, ticketing and towing are both possibilities. Additionally, “wayfinding” signage to help direct drivers to parking decks is coming down the pike as well. The intent being, says Alex, to spur growth and “manage downtown growth in a more cogent way.”

Though the plan for paid parking has been in the works for more than 2 years, its long-awaited fruition seems to have unleashed the Great Parkapocalypse of 2018.

But it is a change needed for a thriving downtown.

WHY: The Kudzu Seafood Company’s Jam Pups are utterly original, ridiculousy delicious spheres of deep-fried goodness. Full of shrimp and sausage with just the right kick, the beautiful marriage of hush puppies and jambalaya can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a side. Owner Lee Clack admits that Jam Pups are probably the most popular item at KSC-- but for a true Gulf Coast experience, Lee’s favorite is the golden Fried Crab Claws. “I grew up in Mobile, eating fried crab claws. I thought every seafood restaurant in the world had fried crab claws!” Served with a tangy remoulade and cocktail sauce, Kudzu’s crab claws are unique and authentic. “That’s the wholeidea,” says Lee, “We’re bringin’ the Gulf Coast to Middle Georgia!” Pictured: Lee Clack with Kudzu Seafood Company’s Jam Pups and his personal favorite, Fried Crab Claws. “Crab without the shell? ------- BO TALKS -------

It’s Been a Long Week William “Bo” Walker is an imperfect writer and father, who stands proudly and graciously on the shoulders of those in his life who continue to find value somewhere within him. Anyone who knows me, knows that if I hate one thing in this world it’s water chestnuts. What makes them so particularly deserving of such unbridled disdain? They have virtually zero flavor! That means that an otherwise delicious casserole, or stir fry, or whatever, can be instantly ruined without even really changing the flavor. Have you ever owned an album that was nearly perfect from start to finish, yet there was one track that you always had to skip? That track is water chestnuts! And the album is any dish they occupy! It’s simply a texture thing, and even though they are relatively easy to pick out, I no longer have the patience for such endeavors. However, if I hate two things in this world, the first is of course water chestnuts, and the second is tattooed parents. Am I right? Where do these demonically scarred and willfully unemployed individuals get the nerve? Do they not realize they’ve rolled out the red carpet for Satan and injected him into their skin and children’s lives like a syringe full of marijuana? This was the lesson I was trying to instill in my own child the other day when he stopped me mid-sentence. “But dad,” he said curiously, “you have tattoos...” Can you believe it? He’s only five-years-old and already has more gumption

24 MAY 11 - 25, 2018

than most adults I know. I looked at him with a smirk and replied, “You’re absolutely right, son-- and that is exactly the kind of sass I would expect from the child of tattooed parents! Now, hold my cocaine cigarette while I finish painting these pentagrams.” Being a parent can be really difficult, and I find that outside expectations run a vast array of benchmarks. Despite countless factors like a person’s upbringing, regional traditions, religious mumbo-jumbo, and so on, there are those who let the proof exist within the pudding. And here I would like to break away from my nonsensical musings to very seriously acknowledge the recent loss of my father-in-law, Dr. Thomas Glennon. He was a well-known professor at Mercer, a community do-gooder, a friend to many, and a father to some of the best humans I have ever known-- including the woman who saved my life when she agreed to share hers with me. He was someone unique and special in a town that often finds itself brimming with status quo, and though his passing leaves a certain kind of darkness, the people who he shared his light with will assuredly continue to illuminate our fair city of Macon with that same spark of altruistic madness that he was so well-known for.

Roos-Maryn Horne and Berlinda Ivy White intend to change the world. As friends growing up, Rose and Berlinda realized the poverty and struggle surrounding them in their native South Africa. Rose came to the United States and was immediately struck by the level of pride that Americans have in their communities, in their schools and sports teams, and their country. On May 23rd, Rose and Berlinda will launch SpiritBeads, a customizable line of hand-made jewelry that will harness the American spirit of unity. Individuals, companies, and local organizations will have the opportunity to commision their own SpiritBeads in a variety of styles and colors to show their community support. SpiritBeads will create jobs for underprivileged women in South Africa, where proceeds will also help to build schools there, all channelled thru an organization called Bouquet of Humanity. Listen up as Rose and Berlinda share their story. Tell me about growing up in South Africa with Berlinda, what brought you to Macon, and what initially inspired you to start SpiritBeads. Rose: South Africa is really like everyone imagines. The wild landscapes and tribal rhythms were a part of our daily lives on the farms of the Zululand District in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa near the Indian Ocean. Berlinda and I became best friends in eighth grade while at Vryheid Girls High Boarding School. However, before that we were in rival schools during the younger grades and our competitive natures did not allow us to be instant friends. After graduating from the University of Pretoria, my parents sent me on a trip to the USA. I immediately fell in love with this country and told my parents that I wanted to work here for a while. 22 years later I’m still loving The States. My husband, Stebin Horne, and I got married in South Africa in 2015, and we returned to Macon to be closer to our family, and I absolutely love it here. The SpiritBeads idea came from my love for my homeland and also my love for this great country. Berlinda and I thought it would be great if we could create a product that would support the great spirit of unity in America while at the same time uplifting the disadvantaged in South Africa. Tell me about the women who are involved in the actual creation of SpiritBeads-- can you discuss the current conditions in the area and what makes this opportunity so important? Berlinda: Nombuso-- Nombuso is just one of those people I want to hug all the time. She has a wholesome smiling face, always sweet and friendly and never complains. One would think she is stress free, living a comfortable life. Six weeks ago I paid her 4 weeks wages. While on her way home in a Minibus Taxi, they were all held up by gun point (about 13 people), all robbed. She lives in a very dangerous township, and this kind of thing happens all the time. Nombuso supports her two children, with the help of her mother. With government grant for the two children and what I pay her, she supports her

I have grown up with poverty around me, but still very comfortable in my middle-class surroundings. I kept my feelings to myself, cause the head of the school, the teachers and children were amazing. They are happy and friendly and welcoming. It was such a humbling experience, and from that point on, Rose and I were determined to make a difference. Olivia will be project managing the build of the new school. The school will be built around September 2018, once Winter has passed. We will be saving the money to help with the majority of the build, and during Winter giving the most necessary help - like blankets and food for the children and teachers.

Berlinda and Rose, 2003. family on less than $200 per month. Nombuso has been working for SpiritBeads for the last two months, and we are hoping that as soon as she can get back on her feet, she will move to a safer neighborhood and be able to offer her kids a more comfortable life.

Specifically, tell me about the SpiritBeads bracelets and rings-- what can people do, what kind of options, and what do you hope to see people get out of SpiritBeads? Rose: SpiritBeads are unlike any other handmade jewelry on the market. Our bracelets and rings are unique in that they are designed by our customers, as well as a generic line that we’ve designed for our retail partners. Each bracelet has a metal disc with our client’s logo/name. The disc is then surrounded by a colorful arrangement of beads typically in the client’s branded colors. This allows them to market their business both internally with their employees and externally with their clients. It’s a fantastic way to build brand loyalty.

Talk about SpiritBeads’ involvement with Masibulele and Bouquet of Humanity as well your overall mission. Berlinda: Rose and I both agreed that we want to give back to South Africa and that education is where it starts. I was introduced by a friend to Olivia who heads Talk about when and where SpiritBeads will be up Bouquet of Humanity, and our meeting over a available, and the launch party at the Society Garcoffee turned into a 2-hour session. what we’re listening to

STRANGERS

Stories are people, and people are stories. Harry Crews said that. And though most of the people he told stories about had an eye put out by a staple glancing off a fence post or had an arm missing from a hay baling accident, if we were able to read long enough, we connected with them. That’s an art. I think about that a lot when I talk to people. You can give me all the facts in the world, but if you can’t tell me a story then I’m going to have a hard time paying attention. Peabody Award winner Lea Thau can tell a story better than most people on the planet. She created the legendary live storytelling event, “The Moth”, and her “Strangers” podcast is a brilliant look into the humanity of people. True stories of people she meets, how she connects with them, the power of kindness... And if you listen long enough, you might question the type of person you are, no matter how disturbing that might be. Give it a shot. You’ll like it. BRAD EVANS

The Natural Bridge was released by Silver Jews in 1996 on Drag City Records (a Chicago label which released most of my favorite mid-90s indie music; a la Smog, Palace, Gastr del Sol). It’s the second studio effort by the band and while it is one of their more understated outings, The Natural Bridge is an excellent starting point to get to know lead-singer, vocalist, and songwriter Dave Berman. Like many others, I was incorrectly introduced to Silver Jews as a Pavement side project. While Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich do appear on the first two Silver Jews releases and appear on two releases after The Natural Bridge, Dave Berman is the true genius behind the band. I tell anyone that will listen that Dave Berman (who sadly retired from music in 2009) is one of the greatest American songwriters of the last 30 years. The songs on The Natural Bridge have a low-energy, country swing with simple arrangements that serve to hold Berman’s often nonsensical but still gorgeously poignant lyrics in an almost mystic light. Songs like “Ballad of Reverend War Character” showcase Berman’s ability to create a beautiful, if not disjointed and tragic menagerie of downtrodden characters for whom, “The stars don’t shine upon us/ We’re in the way of their light.” Other times Berman poses pseudo-philosophical arguments (“What if life is just some hard equation on a chalkboard in a science class for ghosts”) in ways that are both childish and moving. In lines like, “You’re a tower without the bells/ You’re a negative wishing well”, or “There must be a Spanish word for this feeling/ The rush I get when I am stealing”, it’s simply Berman’s effortless turn of phrase that still makes me jealous as a songwriter and continue to swoon like a stereotype.

CROWBAR PRESS

It’s absolutely no secret that I’m a fan of professional wrestling. Spend four minutes with me, and I’ll have the conversation wristlocked and turned into a discussion that will invariably (if you’re lucky) be interrupted by my wife breaking the hold with a, “Is he talkin’ about wrestlin’ again?” or me shouting, “WOOOOO!” and doing the Fabulous Fargo Strut. Since the late 1980’s, the once closely guarded and secretive pro wrestling business (kayfabe, my fellow smart marks) has been busted wide open. I’m a fan of the history as well as the actual show, and the best place to get all the legendary true stories is Crowbar Press. Scott Teal’s been a wrestling fan his whole life and in 2003, he fully embraced his role as historian when he published Ole Anderson’s autobiography, Inside Out. Since then, Scott has written and facilitated the autobiographies of pro wrestling’s mavericks and pioneers. Lou Thesz, Bruiser Brody, Stan Hansen, Ivan Koloff, Tony Atlas, and Jack Briscoe are just a few of the wrestlers whose stories have been published by Scott Teal and Crowbar Press. Today, there are lots of sports entertainers, but professional wrestlers are a dying breed. Visit crowbarpress.com if you appreciate the difference. AARON IRONS

DELI BAGEL

On my recent trip to NYC, I had the pleasure of devouring an authentic NYC bagel complete with lox, cream cheese, capers, & sliced red onion. It was one of the most memorable experiences on my trip. New Yorker’s attribute their water to making such an amazing bagel. My thoughts after arriving back in Maconga? “Our water is just as good, if not better.” I found a recipe that comes pretty darn close to a good deli bagel.

BOBBY KENNEDY FOR PRESIDENT

President John F. Kennedy has been assassinated in Dallas. Martin Luther King Jr. has been killed in Memphis, and the entire country seems to be coming apart at the seams. Then Bobby Kennedy appears on the scene,a light in the darkness. All of this and more is discussed in the new Netflix original documentary Bobby Kennedy for President. Directed by Dawn Porter (Gideon’s Army), the story of a life cut short is told through historic footage and exclusive interviews with the people who were there and effected the most. It’s extensive and intense, and definitely one not to scroll past. CHARLES DAVIS

Cicada Rhythm

A folk group from Athens, Georgia, Cicada Rhythm imitates and modernizes folk music to a rejuvenating degree. Interview by Ashley Doolin

As Cicada Rhythm, Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis have discovered and traveled miles and miles of new road. The two met by the tracks. Andrea was fresh out of Julliard and home to Georgia. Dave was fresh off the train. As songwriters, the duo have taken individual styles and married them to create their honest and compelling New West debut, Everywhere I Go. Cicada Rhythm has begun touring at a furious pace, and will in fact be celebrating the release of their new album on the Creek Stage at The Rookery on May 20th. 11thHourOnline.com>33

You recorded Everywhere I Go at a bunch of different spots-- what was your favorite, Andrea? Dave? ANDREA: My favorite place was The Studio in Nashville, I could just feel it’s history and energy that inevitably seeped into the songs. It used to be a church and definitely had the spirit. DAVE: The Studio in Nashville is a very large open old church with lots of open space. We did 2 completely live acoustic songs with Kenneth there and 3 song with Oliver containing powerful drum parts there. The room lent itself to both performances really well. The room had a lot of vibe! My other favorite studio was Gypsy Farm. It’s an old, incredible property with an outdoor decaying amphitheater and a massive indoor performance hall. Zeke, who lives there, set up a recording studio in the performance hall. The place has lots of vibe too, lots of the greats have played there including Doc Watson and Dolly Parton. You can feel all the old music spirits! You’re touring & hitting some major festivals-- do you still get to be a fan? And if so, who are you looking forward to working with? ANDREA: I consider it part of my job to know of music that’s being made, although I can’t possibly know it all! I am definitely an avid music fan! Dave and I carved out time to see Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, and we’re playing with the Cactus Blossoms soon. We love them! DAVE: It’s tough to be a fan sometimes. I love listening to live music, but when you’re performing it can be hard to be on both sides. I tried to be on both sides at Merlefest and was jello by the end. Alright, this one’s an extremely divisive among the staff... Cohen’s or Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah”? 34 MAY 11 - 25, 2018

ANDREA: Undoubtedly Cohen. DAVE: Cohen. I love him. Has the creative dynamic changed for Cicada Rhythm since you two have transitioned from bandmates to husband & wife? ANDREA: Actually, we are not married...yet! October is soon though, but I don’t expect much to change. We’ve been living and writing and playing together for 4 years now. I will say that song writing is sometimes a little touchy, cause the subject matter excludes nothing, for me. But, Dave has shown me that a song will never come between us. DAVE: Not really so far, but ask me 5 months from now when we’re married! Andrea-- you were raised in the South, do you feel like there is an expectation for women to begin families at the expense of they’re careers? ANDREA: I do, but my parents raised me as a confident, determined PERSON. My sisters and I often talk about how we weren’t taught to be “ladies”. Also, I have a family. Maybe I’m lucky, because it has come at no expense to me. It is the people who show up, maintain relationships, and fiercely defend me and support me. I can’t say that our parents aren’t hopeful for some grand children, but I have no plans to stop doing what I love to do what is “expected” of me. Dave-- I understand you basically lived on a train for quite a while? Did you have any close calls? DAVE: I was always extremely careful and never had any slip-ups. One time, I caught a empty gondola when hopping on only to realize most of it

didn’t have any flooring, except on the corners. You could see the tracks passing beneath you. No sleeping on that car! Andrea-- is there something you learned at Julliard that you would have never expected to translate into your current musical career? ANDREA: Three things, really. The first: that only I can help myself. The second: get out of your comfort zone! These two things I learned as consequences, mainly, but they have catapulted me into a life of endless creativity and a better knowledge of myself. The third: form is everything. If you come from a place of structure, you can build onto it. That’s what I tell my students! Alright, this one’s a remarkably angry topic around the office... Blue Plate or Duke’s? DAVE: The yellow and blue one! Is there a song you two perform together when no one’s around? A guilty pleasure or maybe an inside joke? DAVE: “Commence To Rub”-- Sean Costello

Andrea, can I have your sweet potato pie pancake recipe? ANDREA: How do you know about them?!? And yes, but know that I am a cheater. - 2 cups bisquick CICADA - 1 single serve applesauce RHYTHM - 3/4 cup baked or boiled sweet potato (puréed) May 20th - water (add for desired consistency) Creek Stage at - a little cinnamon and nutmeg The Rookery (Measurements are approximate)

THE CREEK FEATURED ARTIST:

AND HEARD ON...

Singles Chart

For week of May 7, 2018 Powered by CDX TRACTION Artist / Song Title / Label

FEATURED RADIO HOUR:

The defining attributes of country music have been the subject of vicious debate since Hank Williams got kicked off the Grand Ole' Opry, Elvis showed up in fire engine red, and Gram Parsons called an audible on the Ryman stage. With a style that draws from The Sonics and Dick Dale as much as Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams, Jenny Don't & The Spurs could be labeled a country band. But you'd be foolish to consider them only a country band.

may be infected with that too.The Portland, Oregon based Spurs have a '60s pop backbeat behind West Coast reverb and jangly, twangly rhythms. And it's not a gimmick-- or at least it doesn't feel like one. The Spurs don't seem to emulate or emote as much as embody a certain and particular view on country music-- they're slingin' what they're singing', and they believe it. It's hard, rock-candy sweet-- sharp if you crunch it just right.

Jenny Connors grew up herding cattle for fun in Acme, Washington. She adapted her surname from the band Don't-- a fine punk band she shares with Spur's drummer and Oregon Music Hall of Famer, Sam Henry. Her mother had been a rodeo queen, a fan of Patsy Cline, and a karaoke crooner. Jenny took at turn at rodeo herself, earning the title of Grand Champion Bareback Rider. She also inherited her mother's affinity for country music-- though once again, the commentator wouldn't necessarily call Jenny Don't & The Spurs a “country” band. For one thing, they're too natural. A hillbilly outfit with an actual cowgirl in the lead? There's no room for authenticity in contemporary country music!

Jenny herself sounds like a cross between Patsy Montana and Kitty Wells, but with Wanda Jackson's snarl and Johnny Cash's attitude. Jenny Don't & The Spurs released Call Of The Road last summer. It's a wind-swept, echo-laden tromp across a musical landscape that's part Republic Pictures, part Sun Records. It's cinematically intimate, earning the band a nomination for best Outlaw Group at the 2018 Ameripolitan Awards. At times, you can hear the collective distorted breath of men and horses, the overture of a band of desperados in slow-motion gallop. There's a drive to the horizon that's fueled by the rebel contempt of rockabilly, but it burns clean-like the sweet countrypolitan dreams of Mama Don't's beloved Patsy Cline.

Dale Watson calls it the “Nashville Rash.” Too country for country. That pompadoured luminary spent years toiling within the same confines as Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, and Toby Keith before he said to hell with 'em all and perpetuated his own Ameripolitan genre. Even with their punk pedigree and garage growl, Jenny Don't & The Spurs are “eat up” with the Nashville Rash-- and if there's a rock n' roll equivalent, they

Jenny Don't and Sam Henry, along with Kelly Halliburton and Christopher March, have enough clang for the garage and enough twang for the honkytonk. On Saturday May 12, The Spurs ride into town for a special 11pm show on The Creek Stage at the Rookery.

CowPunk Rodeo

Sponsored by Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions The 1980s and 90s were inundated with glittery pop, watered down grunge, and an endless supply of disposable boy bands. A rebellious underground of hardworking songwriters and determined musicians continued to churn out quality music knowing that it would never reach a mainstream audience. Out of this movement was born a combination of country, punk, and New Wave known as Cowpunk as well as the stripped-down realism of Alt-Country. We have unearthed these classics to give them the radio play that they have always deserved. Come take a listen to the second chances of these first-rate classics. Listen to The Creek 100.9 every Thursday night at 7 p.m. for a new Cowpunk Rodeo radio hour with your host David Higdon, or stream online anytime at TheCreekFM.com.

15 Minutes With

SON LITTLE

I confess that leading into my phone call with Aaron Livingston aka Son Little, I felt prepared. I had, in fact, written a spotlight on the singer/ songwriter/producer earlier this year (check it out @ thecreekfm.com). During that research period, I listened to Son Little’s New Magic over and over. It’s a thoughtful piece of work with an R&B silkiness and fair shares of bittersweet hip-pop. Nevertheless and against my grain, New Magic spoke to me. The production is a clean environment full of sonic perfection, the songs simply crafted and capable of conjuring images and sensations. And yeah, some of that magic is dark. At times Son Little becomes as self-destructive and visceral as Townes Van Zandt or Jason Isbell. And maybe that’s the spell I fell under-- the songwriter who would deal in absolutes if one could be found. So imagine, if you will, my great horror when I could not engage my recording program. I flailed, made excuses, hollered from within those cozy, Cadillac confines until the Avengers arrived to avert my technical crisis (Anthony Ennis & Tony Doolin certainly seemed like Earth’s mightiest at the time) and the interview began. I’m relieved to tell you that Aaron Livingston’s patience and understanding overshadowed my embarrasment. Here’s the take-away, kids: When interviewing a Grammy-winning producer, ALWAYS test your equipment.

Let’s immediately begin by talkin’ about your record, New Magic. You have got all those great songs, those great lyrics wrapped in layers and layers. It’s Sgt. Peppery, it’s Electric Ladyland, it’s Electric Warrior, it’s in the key of life... Did you make the album that you wanted to hear? I always do that! I always try to anyway... Once it’s done I probably don’t wanna hear it anymore, (laughs) but up to that point, yeah. I’m makin’ the one I feel like I would wanna hear most. Tell me about Son Little. Where did that name come from, and what has “he” been able to do that Aaron Livingston hasn’t? I think that’s good timing on that question because in this case... Sometimes, I think people are trying to evoke something in particular when you name somethin’... That’s maybe the case sometimes when I name a song, but in the case of Son Little, it’s maybe the other way around. It’s come to signify things after the fact. I had a friend who was just mispronouncing my last name, Livingston, and pronouncing it as “Little Son”, and for a while in Philly I was makin’ music under that name. Flash forward a few years... I was comin’ up with this new project, and I didn’t really know what I should call it... if I should use my own name or make somethin’ up-- and I remembered! I remembered goin’ by that name, and I woke one morning and just flipped it backwards! Since then, people have pointed out to me... I hadn’t thought about this at the time, but the likeness to Son House... And that after the fact really struck me because it felt connected to the way I was approaching the music too. Well, let’s talk about that connection to the past because I wanted to ask you about Washington Phillips. We’re nearly 100 years out from when he 38 MAY 11 - 25, 2018

first started recording. He had a very particular style of gospel. In the song “Demon To The Dark”, you spiritually, philosophically reach out to Washington Phillips. Why him? First of all, you’ve got this mysterious character, and I’m always sort of drawn to those kind of characters-you know, who have with them a certain mysticism. I look for that in music and art in general, and I think goin’ with that... I don’t know if they used the term “ear candy” back then, but with the manzarene and dulceola there’s a certain amount of ear candy goin’ on with that guy. There’s a very strange and unique sound that he’s makin’ with that instrument. Were you able to find a manzarene to put on your record? (Laughs) I’m afraid not! I really wanted to know the answer to that-- and I didn’t even know if I could even pick one out if it was there! Yeah, I don’t even know how he... It looks like he glued two autoharps together? I mean, I guess I could glue two autoharps together, but (laughs) I don’t know how he played it! Probably have to get your feet involved!

and takin’ bits and pieces rather than tryin’ to get sucked too far into one direction. And that’s one of the things that strikes me most about New Magic... you have managed to create a very modern record yet you have been able to take the best things about music from the past and turn it into something fresh. That’s how I would describe myself as a listener. Before I ever really tried to write a song or certainly make a record, I was just a huge fan of music. And for whatever reason... Sometimes I don’t know-- was it a blessing or a curse? But I never really respected the boundaries of it. It just didn’t take me long to consume things all over the map and all kinds of different genres. Everybody comes up hearing music from the past that your family’s into, and those things laid a foundation for me that really stuck. And then I continued to dig, but I tried to stay pretty current with my classmates... just wanting to hear innovation. I’m just always lookin’ for stuff with my contemporaries that just sounds... or just tryin’ to do things that nobody’s done.

Well, here’s an excellent example of that: You won a Grammy for “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean”. Everybody hear at the Creek studios, we kinda put Were you studying any particular songwriters Mavis Staples up on a pedestal. Can you share what when you were puttin’ this album together? it was like workin’ with Mavis Staples? Good question... I don’t know? I don’t She makes it very easy. She’s just think so. I’m always afraid of getting’ natural. Everything that she does too bogged down in the shadows or is second nature. At the same time somethin’. I always have writers, like she’s somebody who, despite having Son Little you mentioned, like Stevie, like Jimi... this incredible legacy in music and a I feel like I have things... they’re all history in music... you can see from May 18th looming over you all the time, and I what she’s doing that she’s embraced The Creek try not to get pulled too strongly into modern sounds as well. And it shows Stage @ The somebody’s tractor beam. I’m always that it’s never too late to innovate and Rookery kinda dancin’ around the influences push yourself.

Shaky Knees 2018 In Review

The Shaky Knees music festival seems to be hitting its stride in a massive way this year with one of the most diverse music lineups I have seen in a long time and in a location that is perfect for the veteran festival goer or the first-timer. Central Park in Downtown Atlanta, with it’s spacious fields as well as large trees and shaded areas, created an oasis for any music lover. No matter what type of music you love, Shaky Knees had something for you. Lillie Mae and her band took the Peachtree Stage by storm with a rockabilly sound and Lillie’s phenomenal fiddle skills. Michael and Tanya Trotter, the powerhouse duo that front the band The War and Treaty, lifted the audience out of the comfy confines of the Ponce De Leon stage and transported them to a down home revival with a brand new backing band that gives them everything that they need to match their immense talent and more. Lukas Nelson and Promise of The Real wowed Shaky Knees with a blazing performance which included a stirring version of their hit song Forget About Georgia that included Lukas in a trance like state, burning up guitar strings during his solo. The stand out performance, in my opinion, of the entire festival was the show done by Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats on the Piedmont Stage. From opening the set with “Shoe Boot” (off of their new album) to the crowd pleasing hit “S.O.B”, Nathaniel had the entire audience drop to their knees during the bridge to say “Rise children” as the Night Sweats brought the crowd to a feverish pitch. Create a musical oasis for the fans-- and they will flock to you. Once again, Shaky Knees got it right. Photos courtesy of aLIVE Coverage. 40 MAY 11 - 25, 2018

Business Spotlight: Sonya’s Grooming

BENEFIT CONCERT FOR HABITAT 4 HOUNDS AT THE SOCIETY GARDEN SATURDAY, MAY 19

Hi Macon Georgia! I'm Sonya Smallwood owner and Pet Stylist of Sonya's Grooming. I came to Macon in 2000 taking an apprentice job in a grooming salon to learn the trade and found my calling in life! I worked as an apprentice until 2006, that’s when I decided to take a leap of faith and open my own pet grooming salon. Here I am 18 years later and loving what I do! Not only do I love my fur babies, but I love the personal relationship I have developed with their parents. I enjoy working with the pet owners, taking their visions and making it a reality. In the process of this I have learned each pet’s personality, likes, dislikes, health, age, temperament and any special needs they may have. All special needs are paid attention to during each visit and noted on their records. I make sure to accommodate any issues they may have to ensure each visit is as pleasant and comfortable as possible. At Sonya’s Grooming, I offer baths, trims, full grooms, teeth brushing, nail trims, nail buffing, nail tips, and washable or permanent color. Each pet gets cologne, and a bandana or a bow! I look forward to meeting you and your fur baby! Call 478-476-9857 today to schedule your appointment.

We hand-bake our all natural dog treats with love using the finest locally sourced ingredients available. Find us at Travis Jean & Carol's Linens (Macon), and Bill’s Produce (Warner Robins).
