RUNNING COMMENTARY A short time ago, the 11th Hour ran Megan Allen’s story on sex trafficking in Central Georgia (available @ 11thhouronline.com). Playing the part of editor, reading that piece over and over again wasn’t easy. As a father and a husband, a brother and a man… Well, it created and informed fears I didn’t even know I had. I talk a lot about the things that scare me—and I’ll warn you that they are not weaknesses to exploit. I’m not a tough man, but I don’t consider myself naive either. As this particular issue was going to print, I read about the experience a mother had at Luther Williams Field—the perceived and probably real threat of abduction or assault that clearly had the hallmark of trafficking. I won’t choose to label it “all a misunderstanding” or “blown out of proportion” because that’s how you become a victim: By pretending your fears aren’t real, and it won’t happen to you. As it turns out, that parent happened to have formal training, a background in detecting suspicious behavior— but more than that, she was paying attention. That’s what it comes down to—awareness. If you aren’t preparing, teaching your children about the real and possible dangers that exist, then no amount of security or number of cameras are going to protect you—or them. I want to yell, scream, threaten, and build a fortress to hide my family. But I can’t. I also can’t tell you that kung fu lessons and a .45 are gonna save the day when a bad guy decides it’s your turn. So what can you do? Walk around paranoid and overprotective for the rest of your life? Maybe. Or you can educate yourself, educate your children and the people you care about. Stop pretending it’s someone else’s problem. Don’t leave it up to someone else to teach your kids about predators and the ridiculous dangers they’re going to face. Tell ‘em yourself, and do it today. That’s not paranoia, that’s good parenting.

AJ Ghent (pronounced Jent) is a legacy, an innovator of the Sacred Steel guitar style developed by his family nearly nine decades ago. Incorporating bits of blues, r&b, soul, and rock n’ roll, this Atlanta based artist and his band have become a must-see, have-to-hear national attraction—and there’s no plateau in sight. From growing up with his sage and father, Aubrey, to learning from guru Col. Bruce Hampton, AJ Ghent has fused and fueled a sound he’s dubbed Neo Blues. Before returning to Central Georgia and The Creek Stage for Bragg Jam 2018, AJ answered a few questions—and shared some exciting news!

HEN DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THE LAP STEEL GUITAR? W It was something that has been in my family since the 1930’s when my great uncle, Willie Eason, created what is now known as Sacred Steel. I guess you could say that the moment I heard the sound, I was hooked. HEN YOU MOVED TO ATLANTA, YOU JOINED FORCES WITH W COL. BRUCE HAMPTON. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE HE GAVE YOU? AND DID HE GUESS YOUR BIRTHDAY? How important time, tone and space were, and haha yeah he did guess my birthday. I F YOU COULD TALK TO ONE ARTIST FROM THE PAST, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU ASK? I’d have to say my grandfather, Henry Nelson, because I never got a chance to play with him. I would ask him how he created his personal style of playing.

I’d have to say for me, it’s my dad, Aubrey Ghent Sr. and his father, my grandfather, Henry Nelson. They pioneered Sacred Steel along with my great uncle, and shaped me into who I am today.

Historic Macon Foundation's annual summertime sensory celebration features experts from all over with all backgrounds in the areas of design, crafted beverages, and food. According to Historic Macon, “During the festival, tour houses in Beall's Hill, visit saved Fading Five locations, and dine in historically significant places throughout Macon.” Events take place through September.
SUMMER MOVIES AT MUSEUM OF AVIATION
Throughout the month of July the Museum of Aviation Foundation is continuing their summer movie series at the Scott Theater Auditorium. This is a perfect afternoon for families with children. The event is free and open to the public, and concessions will be available. Donations will be accepted on behalf of the National STEM Academy and Foundation’s Operations.
RIGBY’S WATER WORLD
This summer marks the grand opening of Rigby Entertainment Complex’ Water World. The Warner Robins water park is set to open mid-July. The park boasts over 40 water play features suited for guests of all ages, a maze of 12 water slides and an 800-gallon dump bucket. 2018 Season passes are now available.
BRAGG JAM JULY 27–28TH
Celebrating 20 years, Bragg Jam is downtown Macon’s community festival and concert crawl. During the last Friday and Saturday in July more than 80 bands will step foot on 20 or more stages for a “country, rock, blues, electronic and soul-infused weekend.” Tickets are on sale now. Proceeds benefit the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and other local civic improvements. Rain or shine.

Deemed “Macon’s coolest outdoor music series” continues as the front plaza of the historic Douglass Theatre comes alive with cool jazz for warm evenings. July 29 welcomes trumpet player Ken Trimmins and friends. Concert admission is free.

Named one of the top 100 festivals by FilmFreeway. Surrounded by a rich musical and southern culture, the Macon Film Festival celebrates independent films while promoting filmmaking for entertainment, inspiration, education, and economic development. The festival features film screenings, celebrity guests, special screenings, and workshops throughout the festival weekend.
MACON BEER FESTIVAL AUGUST 25TH 3–7PM
The Macon Beer Festival is a Pints for Prostates event. Its goal is to promote awareness and education of prostate cancer to the community through the universal language of beer. This fun beer festival showcases downtown Macon, while promoting a good cause.

The Volunteer jam had begun in 1975 as a celebration of Southern Rock hosted by Charlie Daniels and his band. Sort of a family reunion for all the bands from the south… Among the bands were the obvious choices—the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie, Grinderswitch, the Winter Brothers and on & on...After 5 years of the same bands Charlie started to reach out to other artists—Billy Joel, Ted Nugent, Quarterflash, George Thorogood etc etc etc… And since it was Charlie’s party he would sit in on fiddle with everyone for a song or two. This was a moment that I promise, never happened again....And I got it!!!!! I shot every Vol Jam for most of the run of ‘em.... that evening, I had my photo made with James & used it for my Christmas card for 3–4 years… 'Merry Christmas from the 2 Hardest Workin Men in Showbusiness'. Big fun indeed. Kirk West is a photographer, archivist, and the host of “Into The Mystic” Wednesday Nights at 7pm on 100.9 The Creek. He’s published two books of his work, Les Brers – Kirk West’s Photographic Journey with The Brothers, and The Blues in Black and White—a collection documenting his time on the Chicago Blues scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Kirk and his wife, Kirsten, own and operate Gallery West at 447 Third Street in Macon. Every restaurant wants it’s customers to feel at home—and at Circa they can’t help but relax. The dining room is open, yet in the evening, a certain coziness rises up to surround the booths and tables. Already known for their steak and seafood, the chefs at Circa took aim at a number of new concepts. The Braised Veal Bolognese features a fresh tomato sauce, tender veal, and over-large pappardelle pasta. “You can’t find this dish anywhere else in Middle Georgia,” shares Circa manager, Chris Barton. “Pappardelle is my favorite!” Chris suggests pairing the bolognese with the Ramsay Cabernet Sauvignon. The Pan Seared Faroe Island Salmon Piccata is beautifully light—the sauce is easy, buttery, slightly tart with capers and perfect with linguine. With an excellent and subtle crust, the Faroese salmon absolutely deserves a glass of Tiziano Pinot Grigio.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times—I am a slave to packaging. However, I feel like it’s past time I altered that expression. Slavery is too real and heavy to compare to my compulsion to buy stuff and things. I may have found a better analogy for my Achilles’ heel of consumption. No, thankfully, I’m not a slave—but I am beholden in some strange way to the whims of our culture and corporate overlords.
It’s like an arranged marriage. I was destined for this, seemingly groomed from the start to recklessly need and shamelessly plead with my parents for whatever seasonal variation had been foisted upon my favorite cereal. And I’m sure the speed with which I threw my hard-earned allowance at shiny, new action figures lined the pockets of some coked-up, Hasbro marketing team. One might think that as I have grown up and become increasingly aware of the many tricks employed by advertising gurus that I would have become less susceptible. Well, one would be wrong. Is it because I grew up during the 1980’s, when branding and marketing were crashing through walls like the Kool-Aid Man? Maybe it’s because I’m weak-minded, but I take suggestions from advertisers like it’s my job. And I’m not alone. I’ve got friends collecting Funko Pop figurines like they were

Flashy labels with names that reference pop-culture touchstones, so you don’t have to think too hard. Overwhelmed by all the choices? Just pick the one with the name that makes a pun out of your favorite television program! Make no mistake about it, craft beer is the hot, new adult toy for the collector who grew out of their Transformers. Not many will care that I have a limited-edition custom-made “Holiday Special” Boba Fett action figure—but when I tell them I have a small batch, limited-run, holiday IPA—with a tie-in to that popular band that is so hot right now—suddenly everyone has to know where I got it, was there any left, and how much did it cost me. Lucky for you, I was born beholden to packaging, and I always buy an extra for the shelf. Unlucky for you, the one for the shelf is for display... never to be opened. OUR STAFF'S REQUIRED LISTENING FOR BRAGG JAM
FAMILY AND FRIENDS Last year was my first Bragg Jam experience since moving to Macon. I had tips and secrets for survival from all of my local friends, along with a list of bands I wanted to hear. Or so I thought. Thanks to The Creek's own Anthony Ennis and Charles Davis, I learned rather quickly not to sleep on Family and Friends (the band). Described as an Indie-Folk Rock band from Athens Georgia, I immediately thought "well, I am too old for this one". I couldn't have been more wrong. Family and Friends is just that, a group of incredible musicians, blending earnest folk rock storytelling with kick ass music. With their most recent release this past June of their debut full-length album, Felix Culpa, which loosely translates to "happy Mistake", it would be a huge mistake to miss out on hearing and seeing Family and Friends' feel-good vibe and contagious stage presence. Everyone (that I know of anyway) will be out in the middle of the music during Bragg Jam. You would be wrong if you're not. Everyone (or almost everyone that I know) will be partaking in ice cold adult beverages. Nectar of the brew Gods, mixtures and concoctions of Macon's best mixologists. In this Georgia heat, I can also imagine that you (or someone you know) will be over-indulging in these beverages. We all know what this results in the next day, and it's never fun! I have a recipe that I stumbled upon from Georgia's very own Brent Cobb. This is an old Cobb family recipe that will cure any hangover. So remember to drink responsibly this Bragg Jam, but in case you forget, Brent Cobb and I have you covered. Cobb's Cure 1 oz V8 juice .5 oz Worcestershire sauce 2 shakes of Tobasco Sauce Mix in shot glass and shoot it down when you first wake up. Mix a second if needed. —ASHLEY DOOLIN RUBY VELLE & THE SOULPHONICS Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics are no strangers to Macon having first played the inaugural Fly South Festival before returning for shows at the Macon Beer Festival, Capitol Theatre, Society Garden, and even the Higdon’s wedding. They quickly developed a following due to their powerhouse performances and retro-soul vibe. Fronted by the beautiful soulstress Ruby Velle, the sixpiece band are a tight, horn-laced throwback of funk grooves and dancing good times. —DAVID HIGDON
BLACKFOOT GYPSIES During last year’s Americanafest in Nashville, I got to catch the set from Blackfoot Gypsies more or less by accident. They weren’t on my radar of showcases but happened to be scheduled as a late night set at Basement East, following an act that I had on my list. To be honest, I can’t remember who they followed, because Blackfoot Gypsies stole the night. The four piece whirlwind of guitarist and vocalist Matthew Paige, drummer Zack Murphy, bassist Dylan Whitlow and harmonica god Ollie Dogg raged through 40 minutes of country-tinged rock and hard, driving honky tonk blues. These guys are part Rolling Stones, part T Rex with a dash of Faces swagger. Playing a late night slot at the Hargray Capitol Theatre on Friday, Blackfoot Gypsies are the perfect wrap up to night number one and a raucous lead in for night number two of Bragg Jam 2018. Their set is a must see for Friday and is the one people will be talking about on Saturday. —TONY DOOLIN C2 & THE BROTHERS REED Since I started at The Creek, there have been a few phenomenal musicians that I have had the pleasure of meeting and becoming “friends” with: Brent Cobb, The War & Treaty, and a band that will be performing at historic Grant’s Lounge on Saturday night. Hailing from the great state of Kentucky, C2 and the Brothers Reed embody everything you love about music: soulful songwriting, immensely talented musicianship and a raw energy that when seen live is infectious. Just like Brent and The War & Treaty, they are on the cusp of breaking into a totally different stratosphere. After hanging out and even performing with these guys once or twice—and knowing the love that they all have for Otis Redding and The Allman Brothers—the fact that they are performing in that historic venue warms my heart to no end. Trust me when I say, this is not a show that you should miss! —CHARLES DAVIS LEE BAINS III & THE GLORY FIRES Steeped in the thick, humid, southern sounds of rock n’ roll with lyrics akin to a punk rock Bruce Springsteen, Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires is a perfect amalgamation of old and new. From the first time I heard Lee in 2012 on There Is A Bomb In Gilead, I knew this was my kind of music. Over the years I’ve gotten to know Lee, and have had the pleasure of watching him evolve as an artist with every performance. His follow-up to “Gilead” was Dereconstructed(released by SubPop), an in your face rocker steeped in distortion. From the second the record starts with “Company Man” you know Lee has something to say, and you better listen. It is truly a piece of fuzzy, southern, punk rock gold. In 2017 the band made its ballsiest move yet. They dropped their major label in favor of independent New Jersey label Don Giovanni and release the scorching 17 song LP Youth Detention///(Nail My Feet to the Southside of Town). Although Lee is writing about his experiences in Birmingham, this album directly correlates to any Southern city and the experiences we’ve all shared at one point or another. All of that said, you cannot have the Lee Bains experience without seeing the band live. With the expansion of Bragg Jam on Friday night to include more venues and bands, this is the one at the top of my list. After getting your fill of great music bouncing back and forth from the Capitol to Grant’s, make that last stroll back to 576 Poplar St—and be ready for the most in-your-face, sweaty, ass-kicking rock n’ roll show around. –ANTHONY ENNIS 11thHourOnline.com 35

here was a time, not too long ago, that women in professional wrestling were portrayed as a little more than bikini’d valets or cat-scratching, hair-pulling vamps. While there’s probably still more than mountain to climb and a river to cross, women in wrestling have come a long way since the days of the bra & panty match. Of course, there are standouts in any era—and no matter the promotion, Mickie James always made an impression. Her matches against the likes of Trish Stratus, Lita, Beth Phoenix, and Victoria were exceptional, often overshadowing their male counterparts on any given night. Though she’s actively returned to pro wrestling (she never left, no one ever does), Mickie’s also been furthering her other career—country singer. To date, Mickie James has released two full-length albums with a third on the way. On Saturday, July 21st, Mickie will be a part of the Bad Boys of Rockathon at the Macon City Auditorium. Right off the bat, I got a big question I want to ask you. Who was your first wrestling hero? Who was your first musical hero? And which one of them would win in a Texas death match? Oh my goodness. My first wrestling hero was Macho Man Randy Savage. I guess my first music hero would've been Tim McGraw—but I really feel like Randy Savage would take Tim. I believe he would drop the elbow on Tim McGraw! I got to go with you on that. Well, let's talk about your music career. You have released two full length albums to date. I'd say they're a pretty heavy mix of country and southern rock—and now you've got a new single out with the Ying Yang Twins, “Left, Right, Left.” Dare I ask how that came about? Oh, that's so funny... Actually my producers set that up... and the Ying Yang Twins—they're from Atlanta, but they're also a big wrestling fans. I'd met them… whenever we passed through Atlanta back... maybe like

2008 or so. My producer reached out to them because he thought it'd be really cool to do... because “Left, Right, Left” is such a fun, party kindof-anthem-y song anyway. And he was like, “I just wonder if we could get them to do something like that. would they possibly be interested?” And they were interested, and it just worked out! It's a cool, country crossover hip hop, and it's a good blend of the two... It's just a fun song to do. The video was fun to shoot—and it's definitely different than pretty much the rest of the album, or the rest of the music I've put out— for obvious reasons. But it was so much fun to do, and it's a cool song, and everyone seems to really like it. Perfect for the summer. So there is a new album coming out? What's that looking like right now? This one, hopefully, is a little bit more of my own original stuff and... I've had original songs that I wrote or co-wrote on each of the albums so far, but this one seems to be filling up with a little bit more stuff that I've
co-wrote. The last single that I released before that was “Don't Be Afraid To Fly”, and I wrote that with a friend of mine, Sean Gasaway, in Nashville... and then the one prior to that “Get Down”, I wrote with a friend of mine, Bridgette Tatum, in Nashville. She wrote “She's Country” for Jason Aldean. So I'm just trying to find my... the uniqueness of how I write. Do you have any songwriters that you admire that have an influence on your style as you're developing it? I'm learning. It's a learning process for me. I just try to write from my own life experiences or people around me that are experiencing something that I've seen or witnessed—but I just enjoy writing, so I try to work with anyone I can or everyone because you never know what you're going to learn from. It could be something clever that they say or that just lyrically... it works. Because it's all a matter of trying to say things in a unique way that hasn't been said the same way. You know what I mean? You actually got to use one of your songs as your entrance theme at one point. Do you think we should all see everybody go back to doing that? Wrestlers singing their own theme songs? We'll bring back that little aspect of the 1980s? Uh, that'd be cool! I don't know, perhaps... maybe not everybody, you know? Not everybody is so musically inclined, but for certain things, certain people... like maybe Elias? He obviously has the wrestling, he plays the guitar and writes songs as well. So, if he was to write his own entrance music... and obviously Chris Jericho, who's very rock n' roll, he's... very heavy metal type of rock n' roll with Fozzy, and he's done really well for himself with that. And so I think he's done some of his own stuff. I know he's done some of the music for pay-per-views and stuff as well. They've used some of the Fozzy music. That's kinda cool! You mentioned having fun with the music video earlier. I want to talk about “Somebody's Gonna Pay”, where you swing that guitar. Did you get that guitar strike in one take? No! We only had two guitars to get it right. So the first, you know, it took...I think we used both guitars, but thank God. You know, my husband (Nick Aldis) was in that. He played the bad guy, the bad boy in that thing. And so he was gracious enough to let me hit him in the head with a guitar. Not once, but twice!
to go alongside all these guys. These guys are legends—you know what I mean? Bad boys! And I'm the only female! Well, you are—but I think that you might be able to take all of them. Just a swinging DDT, just wipe the whole stage with all of them! Yeah. I'll bring my guitar! Yeah, no, it's awesome. Yeah, we're definitely touring. We've had some shows, you know... I just had two shows this weekend and then went to TV. We have the show coming up in July in Macon which I'm super excited about, and we're supporting the album. I just went in the studio with Lita Ford, and we're working on a project together as well. No kidding? You gotta tell me about that. What's going on with you and Lita Ford? She's amazing for one! I've been able to learn from her... so much. She's just a legend—and in the rock industry, and to be a female, and to have also kept herself... She's still putting music out, and still touring, and still doing so much crazy stuff... but we went in the studio, and we actually redid the song... John Cougar Mellencamp's “Pink Houses”, made it more like a female kind of rocky style, and hopefully, it's embraced by the people—and hopefully John loves it too! But I'm super excited about it, man. It's going to be so cool! And then hopefully we get play some shows together. That would be awesome. When can we look forward to hearing that? Soon. We just pushed back the release date. We were hoping to release it this month sometime, but we had to push it back a little bit. Before the summer's over for sure. I think we're looking at September. I have to ask—what's next for Mickie James' in-ring wrestling career? Oh, I don't know! I'm having so much fun, man... It's cool to be back! I mean, it's a whole different generation of women, and they're so talented, and we're being able to make history with all these incredible first time ever matches, and the awareness and the respect for women's wrestling is something that... it's at a place where I've always wanted it to be, where they're taken seriously. We're taken seriously and just as legitimate as some of the guys—and it's not just fluff and eye candy and you know... lingeriepillow fights and all that stuff. Not that some of the people didn't love those matches! Well, you know, this is not blowing smoke—at one point in time, there were a couple of nights, a couple of Monday nights where watching you and Trish Stratus go at it was better than—you know, in an actual wrestling match—was actually better than some of the fellas that were putting on matches. And so I had always wondered, when they started definitely putting a premium on women's wrestling, calling it the women's revolution—I wasn't alone—a lot of people were going, “Well, when's Mickie James going to come back and do that?” Oh, you're so sweet, Thank you.
Last year you were inducted into the Native American Music Association Hall of Fame. What was that like—to be recognized alongside artists like Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, and my own personal hero, Link Wray? Oh, man, it was incredible. I couldn't believe it when they told me. I was a little bit dumbfounded. I love my Native American heritage, and I embrace it, and I'm very open about it, especially... it's such a... the minorities of minorities... it's like three to four percent of the entire American population at this point. So it's also trying to bring that awareness for the people, and if I can be someone who represents our people, that's incredible to me. But for them to put me in the hall of fame, I was just blown away, extremely honored. I'm going to be back this year, and I don't know what I'll be doing there... I'll hopefully perform—but I'm just incredibly grateful for them to have put me in there. And then my song “Shooting Blanks” won Song Of The Year—which is pretty incredible as well. It shocked me because I didn't even realize it at first! I was like, “Wait a minute—What? I won!” It's crazy! But yeah, that's another thing. It's amazing.
It was good to see you come back and have an opportunity to kind of do... what you had already been doing. Well, and I think it opens the door for so many more women, especially in this industry, with wrestling. You know—I have a son. I have a threeand-a-half-year-old—my husband's on the road full time as well—and so it's a good balance. But at the same time, I think many women—and this is probably true in a lot of different industries, not just wrestling or the entertainment industry—but they feel like once you've had a child, you can't go back to that life, or it's definitely more difficult. I'm very grateful that I have my husband and my family that support me, and they're here to help me, obviously... but to be able to get back into the ring after having that, and be one of the veterans in the industry, and one of the older females in the locker room—not the oldest but one of the older females—I think it just opens the door for so many more women who think like, “Well, if I haven't made it to TV by the age of 30, then I'm not gonna make it.” You know? Because that was kind of the idea. Whereas now it's like, “Well, wait, no. She came back, and she came back at 37! And she has a three-anda-half-year-old, and so that is a possibility for me!” And so it hopefully inspires women to keep going after what they want—and you know, the cream always rises to the top. I do believe that.

NICK LOWE BY AARON IRONS
It's a sad piece o' irony, but die-hard music fans will sit around, bitch and moan about how everybody should know this or that artist, and you're a jackass if you don't know so-and-so wrote such-and-such—but as soon as what's-his-name gets on the charts, then she's sold out, past his prime, and now that everybody knows who she is, it makes him somehow less compelling, less cool ... Some of you are laughing right now because you've heard me rant about exactly those things. Stick around or catch me at a show, and you're likely to hear more. I've been threatening to dedicate an episode of Honky Tonk Hell to Rockpile since the show started. In a perfect world, HTH and Cowpunk Rodeo might team up to do just that, create the very first Creek Super Show. Something akin to Rick and AJ Simon guest-starring on Magnum PI or Springsteen just happening to “show up” at the Stone Pony for a Steve Earle set. Yeah, I know David Higdon and I aren't quite that cool... But Nick Lowe is. You can be forgiven for not knowing Brinsley Schwarz. The bands in England during the late 1960's and early 1970's had more convoluted pedigrees than the Royal Family, and to explain Kippington Lodge and Ducks Deluxe would take more time than I have right now. But to get to Nick Lowe, I'll start with Brinsley, who started on the British rock scene 'round about 1965. His namesake group, like most rock outfits of that geographic time and location were positively drunk on American blues. Brinsley Schwarz, though, also had a distinct country, hippie, honky tonk type o' thang happening. While they never made it big in the USA (quite the opposite, but that's a tale for another day) Brinsley Schwarz was rather influential on the roughhouse London pub rock scene. It was during his time with Brinsley that Nick Lowe stepped out front to be leading man on stage while penning some of the more
iconic songs of that era. Namely (and, God, the title's too long) “(What's So Funny Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” in 1974. Now, you're saying to yourself, “Ahhhhaaaa...” The actual pieces of Rockpile had been floating around since 1970 when Dave Edmunds and drummer Terry Williams had used the name. In 1974, Edmunds produced The New Favorites of...Brinsley Schwarz and got along like Waylon & Willie with Lowe. When the Brinsley boys called it quits, Lowe joined up with Edmunds, made a record, became label mates on Stiff Records, made another record, Edmunds left Stiff—but that was okay because Lowe and Terry Williams still played on his next album, and then Billy Bremner came along and as of this very f 'n minute we all wait patiently for a Rockpile reunion... If you're sitting there scratching your head, wondering “Who are these people, why am I still reading this?” you could exercise a little patience too because I'm getting to the point. You can call it Americana, or alt-whatever but Nick Lowe's been doing it since the mid 1970's. His time with Rockpile and the New Wavy, rockabilly, rockin', country pop of his 1980s run is worth its weight in gold. “I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock n' Roll)” and “Cruel To Be Kind” are the kind of hip, accessible-if-slightly-askew power pop compositions that currently seem to be pogo-ing up the Americana charts like... like it was 1980 or something, and people were actually buying music.

On June 15th, 2018, Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets released an EP featuring four tracks that could easily be among the best of both their respective careers. “Tokyo Bay” is a Lowe original that has everything I want out of a radio speaker—pure, uncut rock n' roll rhythms with fat, rumblin' E's and lyrics that slip through the licks like a middleweight's slickest jabs. It's so good, I don't even mind the Bee Gees cover (“Heartbreaker”. Like Dionne Warwick, Lowe nails it, and it's a great song, and that's the last time I'm sayin' that.) “Crying Inside” is the unrealized Rockpile record we never got. Finally, Lowe pays tribute to his boyhood hero, Cliff Richard, with a fantastic rendition of the English rockabilly ballad,“Travelin' Light”. Nick Lowe never quit, probably won't. There’s forty years worth of Nick the Knife out there, just aching to be heard, re-discovered again for the first time. I made a comment to a co-worker that we should play more Nick Lowe/Rockpile on the Creek. He nodded his head, appreciated the idea and ultimately said, “It's too fringe.” Maybe it is, maybe it ain't— but right now “Tokyo Bay” is the platter that matters, and Nick Lowe is still the Jesus of cool.

Lori McKenna is a “best kept secret” who has a catalog of music that any artist could retire on and be proud of. Lori first came to be known to a mass audience by writing for other artists (Reba, Alison Krauss, Faith Hill, Hunter Hayes, and Keith Urban to name but a few). In the four years since their last album, Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band have undergone something of an identity crisis. Sure, there are elements that have remained the same: Megan Jean’s hurricane of a voice that can glide from baritone to mezzo soprano without breaking a sweat; the engine-room thrum-and-stomp of her husband Byrne Klay on banjo and bass drum—that’s all intact. But depending on when you might have seen them on their endless tour around the country, Megan Jean and Byrne Klay might have been a folktinged duo with Jean on acoustic guitar, or a washboard-strumming revue heavy on campy 1950s horror movie references and 1920s flapper-jazz style vocals. In their most recent incarnation, they’re a mesh of fiercely rhythmic, percussion-heavy propulsion, with the banjo and Jean’s roof-shaking voice the only melodic elements. —meganjean.net
