The Super Typhoon Yolanda • packing a sustained wind of 234 kph and gustiness of 275 kph, Typhoon Yolanda is considered the strongest typhoon to hit the country and the world in 2013 • Described as “monster typhoon”


Super Typhoon Yolanda surged and badly affected nine regions (Regions: IV-A, IV-B, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and CARAGA); 41 provinces, 49 cities, 455 municipalities and 7,027 barangays.


The Destruction of Typhoon Yolanda Affected a total of 2,055,630 families or 9,497,487 individuals


The Destruction of Typhoon Yoland Left 3,974 people were dead but President Aquino said on international broadcast that the death toll will not go as high as 2,500.


The destruction of Typhoon Yoland 19,551 houses were damaged and economic livelihood disrupted.

Physical and Geographical Characteristics •Located in the Western Pacific Basin where at least 20 typhoons passes through every year. Five of these are usually destructive. •The Philippines is part of the Circum-Pacific Seismic Belt •It is located between two major tectonic plates- Pacific Plate and Eurasian Plate •There are at least 220 volcanoes around the country with 21 considered active.

What can we do to be better disaster prepared? Get involved with movement and efforts to create a culture of disaster preparedness and risk reduction on the ground, many non-governmental organizations and people’s organizations are using the community-based disaster management framework as an approach towards building disaster preparedness and resiliency among vulnerable communities


SOS is a disaster response network of various organizations and individuals coming mainly from the health sector that aim to render assistance to disaster victims. SOS was formed in the early 1990s in response to the big earthquake and lahar flows of Mt. Pinatubo.
