ell hello there, and welcome to the 2023 Progressive Preschool Awards. It’s so lovely to see over 400 of you here at the Royal Lancaster London this afternoon – and you all look bloomin’ marvellous. Today is all about celebrating everything that is great about the vibrant preschool sector – the fantastic product ranges, across all categories, inspiring retail execution, innovative marketing and promotional activities and, of course, the companies and the people who make it all happen. We couldn’t have brought the Progressive Preschool Awards to life without you. A massive thank you goes to all of our sponsors, who continue to be unwavering in their support; to our retail buyers who gave up their time to judge the tremendous amount of entries we received in our product categories; and to our industry experts who came together to debate for our Validation Panels. Also, to those who have helped create the extra ﬂourishes that you will see throughout the afternoon including Plane Characters, for making sure that the PPSA23 invitations were exceptionally well travelled; Walker Books for bringing the cute factor to the menus; and to Trixie for providing guests with quite possibly the most stylish bag they will ever own. And a special shout out must also go to our panel chair extraordinaire, Richard Pink, and of course, Lisa Bryant and her team at Bump PR for beating the drum across social media. As in any industry, there are challenges in the road ahead, but there is also much to celebrate. We are so grateful to you all for joining us today. Irish comedian and writer, Jarlath Regan will be in charge of this afternoon’s proceedings. Jarlath has been performing stand up for over 10 years. A ﬁnalist in both the BBC and Channel 4 New Comedy Awards, Jarlath also took home the title of Man of the Year in Comedy in Irish Tatler’s Men of the Year Awards 2017. In addition to performing in front of sold out audiences worldwide, Jarlath has starred on some of the nation’s favourite entertainment shows including Tonight at the Palladium, Russell Howard’s Good News and Stand Up Central to name a few. Outside of stand up, Jarlath is the creator and host of chart-topping podcast An Irishman Abroad which is streamed by more than a million listeners worldwide. He invites some of Ireland’s most famous exports to talk about their experiences in the UK, with past guests including the likes of Sir Bob Geldof, Dara O Briain and the late Sir Terry Wogan.

THE JUDGING PROCESS 2023

ARRIVING AT THE WINNERS We take a look behind the scenes at the entry and judging process for the PPS Awards 2023. he Progressive Preschool Awards (which are owned and organised by Max Publishing, owner of Progressive Preschool Magazine and PreschoolNews.net) recognise and reward excellence across the preschool spectrum – in product, retail execution and initiative, marketing promotions, wholesale/distribution and sustainability, as well as the Outstanding Achievement award for special individuals who have contributed greatly to the industry (with nominations sought by way of recommendation

based on individual achievement, knowledge and performance in the preschool sector). In addition, for the third year, there is a consumer award, What Parents Love, launched in collaboration with The Insights Family and uncovering the most trusted brands based on fandom and advocacy by UK parents of children aged 1-3. The judging process for each of the different categories differs in each case, duly tailored to arrive at the ﬁnalists and winners.

THE PRODUCT AWARDS This year’s prestigious Product categories were highly anticipated, with 10 finalists lining up for each of the 12 accolades, underlining the wealth of top products in the market across the board and the strong number of entries received through the online awards portal. “The quality and volume of entries we had for the Progressive Preschool Awards this year was simply exceptional; we didn’t envy the judges with their task,” commented Rob Willis, coo and joint owner of Max Publishing, which owns and organises the event.

“Thank you to each and every one of our judges for devoting their time to help us arrive at our finalists.” The criteria for the product categories remained the same as in previous years, with all entries required to be new to the market or significantly updated in the last calendar year (1 July 2022 to 1 July 2023), already in retail, with entries either being a single product or a range with up to five products. The online judging portal saw a bumper number of entries, which were then judged by key buyers from a wide spectrum of retailers.

THE JUDGING PROCESS 2023

THE RETAIL AWARDS Retailers are at the forefront of the fast moving, ever changing preschool sector and they must be recognised at every level. Retailers were nominated from all over the UK in the months leading up to the judging. Following the online nominations, the five major retail categories (Supermarket, Multiple, Mixed, Department Store and Online) were judged by a retail validation panel comprised of experts from across the preschool industry, deliberating to arrive at the finalists for 2023. Panel members included: Elliot Bishop, Bébélephant; Simta Sawnhey, Paramount; Nivi Bhide, Infantino; Ashley Holman, ToyTopic; Samantha Bourne, Jazwares; Anne Bradford, Poetic Brands; Cat O’Brien, Hasbro; Neil Montgomery, Juratoys; and Christine Roberts, Misirli. The panel was chaired by Progressive Preschool’s publisher Rob Willis, with group editor Samantha Loveday and PPS’ magazine & event manager Jo Cassidy (each of whom do not vote). Meanwhile, the finalists in the independent retail categories (Nursery, Gift, Toy and Apparel) were reached from a mix of self nomination and industry nominations from suppliers, reps and agents. They were then judged by industry experts on criteria including commitment to the preschool product sector, product selection, display, marketing, online activity and retailing environment among others.

THE MARKETING AWARD The Marketing Award highlights the campaigns which have made an impressive impact upon the preschool product and retail sector over the past 12 months. This year’s six ﬁnalists were arrived at by a group of marketing experts, chaired by Richard Pink, md of Pink Key Licensing. He was joined by Paul Godwin (PCG Consultants), Amber Steventon (Azaria PR), Jennifer Cooper (Penguin Ventures), James Marsh (B3 Creative) and Adeline St John (The Media Snug). “As always there were a variety of marketing disciplines at play across the various entries – the panel were impressed with the creativity and targeting for many of the campaigns and there was the inevitable discussion of how well the results stacked up against the various available budgets for the campaigns,” commented Richard. “In the end it came down to the campaigns that the panel believed were the most effective at achieving what they set out to do with the budgets that were available – the nominations and ultimate winner were campaigns that most effectively combined creativity and commercial effectiveness.” Amber Steventon, md of Azaria PR, which is the category sponsor of the Marketing Award, continued: “Marketing plays a key role in any product launch or brand development, nevermoreso than in times of change or challenge. “It continues to be our pleasure to sponsor the Best Marketing Campaign at the Progressive Preschool Awards, to ensure that effective, interesting – and even groundbreaking – activities are shared and celebrated. We saw some amazing campaigns and hotly debated the winner – so a huge congratulations to all the entries.”
