‘Greats’ Reactions From Finalists

“Over The Moon” Rejoice Gift Retailers

Whoops of joy, happy tears and big smiles were the order of the day when PG&H announced the fabulous Greats 2023 finalists recently.

“We were literally jumping for joy when we heard the amazing news!” said a delighted Priya Aurora-Crowe, co-owner of Lark, while a thrilled Jodi Lee Laverty, owner of Dolly Daydream in Presteigne, exclaimed: “wow, wow, wow! I’m absolutely over the moon to have made it as a finalist! This is just the best news for our lovely little shop, my mum, and the ladies who work with us. I’m so proud and excited!” she added.

“I'm in floods of happy tears,” said an emotional Jo Williams, owner of Joco Interiors in Nuneaton. “After such a hard 12 months this is such amazing news.”

At Mooch in Bewdley and Stourport-onSevern, co-owner Jon May revealed: “As soon as we heard the news we took to our socials and have been overwhelmed by the love and comments from our loyal 'moochers'.”

At Maybugs in Bexhill-on-Sea, Eastbourne and Hailsham, co-owner Greg Rose let out a

whopping “wowzah!”, with Scott Nicol, co-owner of KeepSakes in Scotland exclaiming, “we can’t wait to shout about it to all our customers!” and Pete and Jelena Whiteman, co-owners of Amore concurring, “What great recognition for all the hard work and effort that the team has put in over the year”.

Doubtless summarising the joyous feeling of all the finalists was Judy Evans, owner of Williams of Audlem in Audlem, who enthused: “So thrilled to be a finalist in the most prestigious awards night in the gift industry! Who doesn't dream of an evening of gift-related glitz and glamour!”

Winners will be announced at the fabulous The Gift Awards on 11 May, held at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel. See The Gift Awards Unite The Industry (below). For the full Greats finalists listing, turn to pages 26-27.

Stock, Staff And Service

Colchester gift store Bill & Bert’s - part of the Colchester Gift Card - was recently chosen as one of the UK’s favourite local businesses having received hundreds of votes in a nationwide competition sponsored by Town & City Gift Cards. The store was a runner up, with close to 200 votes.

Owner Bill Nettelfield says that the store’s success is down to stock, staff and service, with a visit to the store equating to “a personal shopping experience.”

Celebrating The GOTY Finalists

After an exciting live judging at Spring Fair in February, (see pages 3335), the six finalists in the GOTY’s 19 categories were announced by The Giftware Association, (see pages 36-37 for the full listing), with the winners to be revealed at The Gift Awards taking place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 11 May. (See The Gift Awards Unite The Gift Industry, left).

Lark Expands Outside Of London

Multi-award winning Lark’s co-founders, Priya Aurora-Crowe and Dominic Crowe, have added a new store to their current 12-strong retail portfolio in South and West London. A new outlet was recently opened in Woking, offering gifts, homeware, fashion and jewellery.

Springing A Surprise

A highlight for William of Audlems’ owner Judy Evans in February was winning Spring Fair’s Modern Retail Good Retail Award In Store Creativity category, for the store’s mural to celebrate William of Audlem’s 160th anniversary in 2022.

“We were so pleased to be shortlisted as a finalist - and totally shocked to have actually won!” said Judy. “Speaking to the organisers afterwards, they loved what we had done to embrace our heritage by retrorefitting our store as well as the mural.”

PG&H Retail Barometer Findings

Survey Reveals A Steady 2022

The latest PG&H Retail Barometer - an annual survey which tracks the health and wealth of independent gift retailers - revealed that 2022 was, on the whole, a good one for gift indies, with two thirds of respondents reporting that business in 2022 was better or the same as in 2021.

The average customer spend increased for 70% of respondents, and despite the naysayers, Christmas turned out to be a strong one for many, with 70% of respondents confirming that

Home fragrancing was the strongest product sector reported two thirds of respondents (67%), showing the biggest increase in 2022, followed by toys and games (60%), and greeting cards (57%). Some 83% invested in new products last year, with the biggest expansion seen in eco/sustainable giftware (31%). Made in Britain too, was important to 93% of survey respondents, as was online trading.

Giftwrapping Initiative Raises £1,000

Indie gift retailer

Andrea Pinder, owner of Presentation Cards & Gifts in Barrowford, recently presented the Rosemere Cancer Foundation in Preston with a £1,000 donation thanks to her giftwrapping initiative.

Andrea raised the majority of the donation by offering customers a giftwrapping service in store, with the option of making a donation to the charity. She rounded up the monies raised with a £70 personal donation to reach the grand total.

Christmas 2022 was better or on a par with Christmas 2021.

The biggest ‘positive’ was online/website expansion for those surveyed, while on the downside, the impact of the Covid-19/ Omicrom variant, coupled with the cost-of-living crisis, had the biggest detrimental effect.

Mama We Love You

With Mother’s Day (19 March) the second most important gift giving occasion for gift retailers, the tills were certainly busy ringing up sales this year.

“Mother’s Day was cracking. Best ever, even allowing for inflation,” confirmed Pete Whiteman, coowner of Amore and Dzo Dzo in Woodbridge. “Mums are never forgotten. People always find a little treasure for their mum,” Pete added.

“Mother’s Day build up was in full swing from the weekend of March 11-12,” confirmed Julianne Moore, owner of MiMi in Hartley Wintney and Wokingham. “Saturday 18 March was super busy, with a 15% increase on year on year sales for the same event last year.”

Meanwhile, the mood is thankfully a positive one for 2023, with the majority of retailers predicting that business will remain about the same or will see marginal growth this year. For the full findings of the PG&H Retail Barometer, turn to pages 17-25.

Above left: The average spend increased in 2022 compared to 2021.

“Customers have the option of making a donation for the service and I’m very grateful to all those who did,” said Andrea.

Gift Indies Celebrate At House of Lords

International Women’s Day on 8 March will long hold special memories for Jo Williams, owner of Joco Gifts in Nuneaton, and Olivia Reilly, owner of Little Boat Gifts in Brightlingsea, named as two of 100 ƒ:Entrepreneur’s ‘IAlso100’ this year. Both attended a special International Women’s Day reception at the House of Lords recognising their strong contribution to entrepreneurship.

At The Rowan Tree in Budleigh Salterton, owner Karen Ritchie also saw a good lead up to Mother's Day. “There were a lot of customers buying gifts and cards well in advance, and spending a little more than usual,” she highlighted. “We had quite a few sons and dads rushing in at the last minute to buy a gift and card.”

Valentine’s Day Delivered

With Valentine’s - and Galentine’s Day - becoming bigger than ever occasions on the gifting side, this year’s ‘day of love’ didn’t disappoint.

At the six Brocante stores in Cornwall, co-owner Kieron Cockley commented: “Valentine’s was a small part of the business, but a nice little boost in sales at the start of half term. Predictably, we sold a lot of Valentine’s cards and hearts with quotes on, and a few larger pieces such as our Wonkiware ceramics.”

In Beauly in the Highlands of Scotland, Helen Crawford, co-owner of the Old School Beauly, also saw the tills jingling. “We had a particularly good run up to Valentine’s Day this year with a very welcome last minute dash from our Highland menfolk!,” said co-owner Helen Crawford, while Janet Hartree, owner of Ewe & Me and Ewe & Me Too in Grantown added, “in the run up to Valentine’s we saw an increase in jewellery sales along with toiletries.”

Above:

“The speeches were very empowering of women in business, how we are so resilient every day due to other commitments, such as young children, elderly parents and being at the end of the phone for any issues such as schools calling for sick children or having homes to run as well as our businesses,” Jo told PG&H. “The buzz and energy in the room was phenomenal. We didn't want it to end.”

Guest speakers included Seema Malhotra MP, Shadow Minister for Small Business and Consumers, and entrepreneur Lucy Griffiths, a business coach and former TV reporter covering the war in Ukraine, who paid tribute to the power of female entrepreneurship.

The event spotlighted multi-achieving female business owners from across the UK, who are being championed by Small Business Britain’s ƒ:Entrepreneur campaign, which showcases an annual line-up of 100 phenomenal women making a significant contribution to society, economy and communities, called the ‘IAlso100’.

On Trade Association Powerlist

International Women’s Day (8 March) got off to a superb start for Sarah Ward, ceo of The Giftware Association, who was thrilled to hear that she has been nominated and included as one of 100 women selected for the inaugural Women in Trade Associations Powerlist, a collaboration between FSB, CBI and the Trade Association Forum, to celebrate and recognise inspirational women in the Association sector.

“I am so honoured to have made this list and be celebrated in this way,” commented Sarah. “There are so many other powerful women on the list too, so I am privileged to share this achievement with them and for the power of our industry.”

Depesche Grow Its UK Presence

A well-loved household name in mainland Europe, gift and stationery company Depesche is refocusing its efforts on the UK market having invested in a brand new sales set-up, appointed a UK-based fulfilment partner, reduced its minimum order quantities and become a Cardgains official supplier.

With a quest to grow its presence in the UK, and further build on the success of its brands which include TopModel, Dino World, Miss Melody, Yivi and Princess Mimi, the last few months has seen the company ramp up on the sales side.

Heading Depesche’s UK sales team are Pete Goodman and Mike Apicella. “While historically Depesche’s distribution in the UK has been more skewed to toy retailers, the expansion of the product portfolio means it is now more relevant to the gifts, greetings and garden centre retail sectors too,” confirms Pete.

Theo Paphitis’ Vision Of The High Street

An Exclusive Interview With PG&H

Following his seminar on the Inspiring Retail Stage at Spring Fair in February, retail entrepreneur and former ‘Dragon’, Theo Paphitis, owner and chairman of Rymans, Robert Dyas, Boux Avenue and the London Graphic Centre, shared his vision of the high street over the next one to three years exclusively with PG&H.

“I’d like the high street to be more inclusive. Not in the thinking of the moment, but more inclusive in terms of all our day to day living requirements and how we live our lives,” he explained. “Going forward, I would love our high streets to have some of the core values that they used to have.”

Explained Theo: “I’d like high streets to be about the community, with lots of outlets offering products and services. At the same time, there needs to be somewhere for people to park their cars - not everyone cycles - especially as we get a more elderly group of residents, and it doesn’t have to be on the high street itself. The important thing is that there is an understanding of what local

people’s needs actually are, not what someone is telling them their needs are.”

As for working from home encouraging more people to visit their high streets and shop locally, he pointed out: “Although we’re seeing a drop in people shopping in our city centre stores, we’ve benefitted in other ways. Our businesses in local towns are thriving. People are shopping locally and they are getting the service. I believe that high streets need shops that have a good range of products that are competitively priced, and they don’t need to be the cheapest, because customers respect that you are giving them something else.”

POC’s Founder In Barclays Bank Series

Products of Change’s founder and ceo Helena Mansell-Stopher has been featured in a special Female Founders series from Barclays Bank, celebrating the success of female pioneers of business as part of its International Women’s Day activity.

Taking the opportunity to reflect on its own efforts to embrace equity over equality and recognise the different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences of women in business the world over, Barclays has launched a social series highlighting the stories of six female business founders across the SME sector.

“It’s pretty phenomenal to be part of Barclays’ Female Business Founders series. To be showcased as a woman bringing a fresh approach to the industry is a huge honour,” said Helena.

“Opening a business bank account during the pandemic in 2020, when Products of Change was created, was tough, and Barclays was the only bank that would support us, which is crazy to think now, but at the time it was a real issue,” said Helena. “Fast forward three years and Products of Change is thriving and connecting not only to industry but within the Barclays sustainability and SME networks too. It’s amazing what a different time and being a part of a supporting networking gives you.” Visit www.productsofchange.com. For more about Products of Change turn to page 53. Charity Coaster Collection

Sustainable homeware brand LIGA has launched a set of marine-inspired coasters in support of the company’s nominated charity Sea-Changers. The organic cork coasters feature pufferfish, orca, smack of Jellyfish and walrus, with LIGA donating £1 for every set sold to Sea-Changers to help raise money and awareness for the charity. (The sustainable cork coasters are made in Portugal and printed in Cornwall).

A recent project involved LIGA contributing a £10,000 donation towards innovation around the problem of ocean plastic, an issue the team at LIGA care deeply about.

“We create products from waste and believe waste needs to be seen as a solution,” comments Jennie Elderkin, founder of LIGA. The company’s work with Sea-Changers is in addition to their pledge of 1% For the Planet.

Rising To The Challenge

As we look forward to celebrating Easter in April, the King’s Coronation in May, and hopefully much else besides in 2023, for many, 2022 and all its woes seems a long time ago; and yet it was the year of rising inflation, increased mortgage repayments, increased energy and fuel costs, the outbreak of war in Ukraine - all major contributors to the costof-living crisis - rail and postal strikes, and three different Prime Ministers.

So how did independent gift retailers fare in what, to say the least, was a challenging year? PG&H’s 17th unique, annual retail barometer delved into the findings of the latest survey, with the majority of retailers reporting a decent year despite the hurdles.

The latest PG&H Retail Barometer revealed that 2022 was, on the whole, a surprisingly good one for gift indies, if a bit of a rollercoaster due to external factors.

Some two thirds of respondents reported that business in 2022 was better or the same as in 2021. The average spend increased for 70% of respondents, who reported it had increased slightly or significantly, or had remained the same. Despite the naysayers, Christmas turned out to be a strong one for many, with 70% of respondents (compared to 90% in 2021), confirming that Christmas 2022 was better or the same as Christmas 2021.

The biggest ‘positive’ was online/website expansion for those surveyed, (42%), with product diversification and staff tying for second place, and ‘shop local’ campaigns coming in at No. 3.

However, on the downside, the ongoing impact of the Covid19/Omicrom variant, coupled with the cost-of-living crisis had the biggest detrimental effect.

Home fragrancing was the strongest sector reported two thirds of respondents (67%), showing the biggest increase in 2022, followed by toys and games (60%) and greeting cards (57%). Some 83% invested in new products last year, and looking at the product areas gift indies see as ripe for further diversification this year eco/sustainable giftware is top of the list followed by home fragrancing, clothing, men’s gifts and greeting cards which all tied in second place.

Made in Britain too, was important to 93% of survey respondents. As for online trading, 57% of respondents reported a

transactional website, with almost two thirds of respondents planning to develop their website further this year.

As for 2023, the mood seems encouragingly positive, with most retailers predicting that business will remain about the same or will see marginal growth this year. Showing their support for King Charles, over half of respondees said that they were planning to celebrate the Coronation in May.

How was Christmas 2022?

Having experienced an unsettling Christmas in 2022, with the costof-living crisis raging, disruptive rail and postal strikes causing havoc, and the media across the board putting out continuous, negative stories, the expectation was that consumers would tighten their purse strings when it came to Christmas gifting, with a lower spend expected as gift givers edited their present buying list or abandoned gift buying altogether.

However, 70% of respondents (compared to 90% in 2021), confirmed that Christmas 2022 was better or the same as Christmas 2021, with less than a third saying that it was worse.

Left: For many respondents, Christmas didn’t disappoint.

How did the average spend compare to Christmas 2021?

Interestingly, the findings of the PG&H Retail Barometer knocked the media’s predictions on the head when it came to gift buying, with 81% of respondents revealing that shoppers were determined to dig deep for the festive season. Less than a fifth said that shoppers spent less than the previous Christmas.

On The Downside

Which main factors had a detrimental effect on your business in 2022?

For 67% of respondents, the cost-of-living crisis (to include inflation, increased mortgage repayments and energy hikes) coupled with the hangover effect of the Covid-19/Omicrom variant, had the biggest effect on business last year, with half of those that responded also citing the expansion of online retail platforms such as Trouva, Faire and Ankorstore. Some 70% of respondents reported that the average spend increased slightly or significantly, or had remained the same.

Queen Of Crafts

For many of us, Dragons’ Den is an entertaining ‘must watch’ BBC 1 TV series, with nervous entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas to a fearsome den of super successful business people who may or may not invest in their venture. Among them is businesswoman Sara Davies MBE, who holds the distinction of being the youngest ‘Dragon’ to join the Den. Having started Crafter’s Companion while she was still at university studying business management, Sara’s own business trajectory has been breath-taking. “When I was doing my placement at university, at a local craft company in County Durham, I used to go to lots of crafty trade and consumer shows to demonstrate and sell the products that the company made. It was

Always Be Yourself

As a first time judge of the Gift of the Year’s Design & Craft category, and sponsor of The Greats Best Garden Centre category, PG&H asked multi-award winning ‘Dragon’ and ‘Queen of Crafts’ Sara Davies MBE, founder of globally successful Crafter’s Companion, what impressed her the most about this year’s shortlisted products.

Plus, where did her love of craft come from, how did it all begin and what’s the secret of her phenomenal success?

here that I realised that there was a gap in the market for an envelope making tool while chatting to lots of customers who often asked if there was a product which could create bespoke envelopes. They were creating lovely handmade cards then putting them into ill-fitting, boring white envelopes, which they weren’t happy with, and I couldn’t blame them.”

Continues Sara: “With so many products out there in the market, I was very surprised that a product like this didn’t exist, so I set about doing some research and found that there was a gap in the market. I knew that, with a little bit of help, I could create a really ground-breaking product to fix the problem. I roped in my dad, an ex-engineer, for some help, and together, we created the Enveloper.”

“The best piece of advice I received in the first few years of my career was to be myself and know that that was good enough,” states Sara. “So, I think it’s so important to stay true to yourself and that’s what I would say to anyone starting out in business. It’s also a great bit of general advice.”

Where does Sara’s passion for crafting come from? “I’ve been surrounded by crafts from a young age and tried lots of different things such as sewing and crochet with my nana and gran, as well as the regular things you do as a kid like salt dough. Growing up, I was always inspired by my mam and dad who instilled a lot of the values and the work ethic that I have today,” Sara points out. “My dad always used to say to me, ‘kid, if you go and reach for the stars, but only make it to the moon, it’s still really good’, and that has always stuck with me. In fact, I’ve, always thought, actually, there’s always another star to reach for.”

Commenting on how crafting has become such a mega hobby/pastime in recent years, Sara highlights that it has

always had a dedicated, passionate community, “but with lots of people spending time indoors over the past few years, there has undoubtedly been a crafting boom,” she states. “I think so many people love crafting and creating things because it can have such a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing. There are different stages of joy that crafting brings, from researching and seeking out inspirational ideas, to physically creating something with our hands and focusing on nothing but the project in front of us, to then gifting it to someone and passing on that bit of joy to a loved one.”

As a first time judge of the Gift of the Year 2023 Design & Craft category, she says that she was most impressed by the sheer variety of the products and the innovation that they displayed. “There were lots of gifts that covered a multitude of things, such as being eco-friendly, affordable and good for wellbeing, but they were done in very different ways.”

As for her personal criteria when judging the category, she explains: “When you’re looking for a gift, you want to find something that suits that particular person, but you also want to find something unique and not readily available everywhere else. I also looked at quality vs cost. It’s really important for people to be able to have affordable options,

especially in today’s current climate, while not compromising on the quality of the product.

My advice for next year’s entrants would be to make sure that they know their customer inside out. Research is vital and it needs to be completely obvious who your market is, from your messaging, packaging and marketing materials to your social media accounts - everything should scream who you are and who you are for.”

As a ‘Dragon’, what is she looking for when entrepreneurs pitch their ideas in the den?

“Primarily, I'm looking for a fantastic person. An outstanding entrepreneur can carry a mediocre idea, but the most revolutionary idea wouldn't be able to get off the ground with a mediocre entrepreneur,” she states. “I also need to feel passionate about the entrepreneur and the product, and to feel like I can make a genuine difference to the business. It also has to be something that is interesting as well as profitable, or something that does social good as well as breaking even.”

Commenting on entrepreneurship and today’s entrepreneurs, she highlights: “The landscape of entrepreneurs is just as exciting today as it has been for the last few decades, with more and more people taking

Sara’s Career Highlights

In addition to growing Crafter’s Companion from a good business idea into a global company, employing hundreds of people, Sara also enjoys a high profile TV career. She has become an author, and received an MBE from Prince William, as well as receiving countless prestigious awards over the years.

“I think one of the most memorable highlights in my career has been getting an MBE,” she confirms. “Plus joining Dragons’ Den and going on Strictly were two things that I never thought I’d get to do but I have absolutely loved both.”

the plunge and setting up their own businesses. For instance, in the den, you might think you have seen it all and then someone will come through the doors and just completely blow you away with a product or a service that you know is just going to change people’s lives or will provide a genuine solution to a genuine problem.”

Did Sara herself dream big when she was growing up? “I’ve always been ambitious and driven, and have always tried to work really hard. Even at school, I was never the smartest in the class, but I would always work really hard to get good grades.

When I decided to go to university to study business management, I knew that I wanted to own a business one day but I assumed that I would end up running the family painting and decorating shop in Coundon. That plan changed, however, when I had to do a year’s industry placement which led me to starting Crafter’s Companion. I always knew that I wanted to make something of myself. I have always set goals for myself and as soon as I’ve been able to hit one of them, I look at the next target that I can hit.”

What does she see as the secret to her outstanding success? “I don’t think that there’s any big secret! I think I knew when I started my business that it was going to be hard work, but I don’t think I’ve ever been afraid of hard work and I’ve also been really, truly passionate about the work that I’ve done. If you love what you do, you make sensible decisions or you ask people for advice and you work hard. I think that the world is your oyster!”

Goty Judges Cast Their Votes...

Following a first round of online judging last December, the Gift of the Year’s live product judging, organised by The Giftware Association, took place across all four days of Spring Fair in February, with a record-breaking turn out from over 60 judges.

What impressed the judges most was newness, innovation, quality and the sustainability credentials of the shortlisted products, as PG&H discovered.

Hall 5 at February’s Spring Fair provided an ideal venue for leading names in gift retail, as well as experts in the fields of sustainability, licensing and gift trade media, to come together to assess and judge the shortlisted products submitted for this year’s Gift of the Year competition.

Over 100 industry experts comprised the judging panel this yearthe highest in the competition’s historywith shortlisted companies enjoying seeing their products put in front of a huge number of influential retailers.

“The newness was fantastic this year, with many products I cannot wait to stock in all Lark stores,” stated Priya AuroraCrowe, co-owner of 13 Lark gift and

lifestyle shops in South London, West London and Woking. “The quality was second to none and the retail price was fair for most entries. I have contacted many of the brands and look forward to the products coming into the shops.”

Jo Williams, owner of Joco Interiors in Nuneaton, was equally enthusiastic: “This year’s shortlisted products were absolutely fantastic across all the categories, and seeing them up close made some of them really stand out. I especially loved judging the home fragrance category, as the smells are delightful and my shop is always filled with fragranced gifts. I saw some new lines which really impressed me.”

She continued: “Across the board I enjoyed seeing lots of new products from companies I had not seen within the Gift of the Year awards in previous years. The use of sustainable materials and innovative ideas were what drew me to vote for the products I selected from each category. And following the voting process, I had a wander round the show and spoke to some of the suppliers with a view to stocking their products in the shop.”

Carol Bairstow, owner of Pure Inspiration in the Isle of Man, said that it was a privilege to be part of the judging for this

year’s Gift of the Year competition. “I didn’t realise it would be so hard to choose the finalists,” she stated. “There were some wonderful products, with lots of the finalists whose products we already sell in the shop, and it was great to see the companies putting themselves forward.”

Carol said that her initial thought while looking at the products was the packaging and presentation, “and also asking myself if the product had the all-important ‘wow’ factor, and would I stock it in my shop. I was aware of the cost of products too, as in the current climate, customers are looking to get the most for their money. I also had fun trying out some of the games and figuring out a few of the more complex gifts as it certainly was an interesting array of products.” She added: “Once I’d finished judging, I bumped into several of the shortlisted companies and made a point of hopping onto their stands to learn more about them and their products, and also take some information back to the Isle of Man with me.”

Caroline Ranwell, owner of Hugs & Kisses in Tettenhall, concurred that it was “an honour” to be asked to be a judge. “I really enjoyed it as there was such a diverse range of top quality, innovative gifts. It was so difficult to choose between them. I ended up spending most of the morning looking at them all. Since the show, I have already placed orders with some of the companies. It was a great way of sourcing new products, especially as some of them were completely different to anything we have ever stocked before.”

Andrea Pinder, owner of Presentation Cards & Gifts in Barrowford, said she found the judging day fascinating. “There were so many lovely products. I thought the Love Coco coconut bowls were really different, sustainable, up-cycled and beautifully hand painted. It was a product I ordered. The gift sets from Ross & Ross Steak & Chips were interesting, as was the make your own Dinosaur Timeline World Map for children, from Clockwork Soldier, which is a super gift, fun and educational, and will definitely be on my list for buying. Meanwhile, I’ve already purchased Cotton & Grey’s sentiment relaxing candles, while The Bottle Baking Co has proved to be very popular with my customers, with the bottles reusable for alternative use.”

With sustainability at the forefront of most retailers’ minds, Helena Mansell-Stopher, founder and ceo of Products of Change, (the sustainability membership, education platform and resource hub), highlighted: “Judging the Gift of the Year’s Ethical and Sustainable category has been a real delight over the last two years, but what I have loved the most is seeing the increase in companies sending nominations through for this category, and also, the level of change the industry is making. To see companies be truly innovative is the biggest privilege of all.”

Gift of the Year organisers The Giftware Association (GA) confirmed that the Gift of the Year

More GOTY Recognition...

Once again, all Gift of the Year finalists are also in with a chance of winning the coveted Judges’ Choice award, plus, the GA will also be announcing the Gift of the Year’s People’s Choice award, which is judged by the general public, enabling everyone to vote for their favourite product across all of the Gift of the Year categories.

Once again, the GA has again opened it up to all shortlisted products and hopes it will be its biggest year yet, affording an opportunity for a shortlisted company to get through to become a People’s Choice winner.

And The Winners Are...

The Gift of the Year finalists are listed on pages 36-37, with the winners revealed at the joint Gift of the Year and Greats AwardsThe Gift Awards 2023 - which are being held on 11 May at London’s Royal Lancaster hotel.

Tickets and tables for the awards event on 11 May can be booked via the Max Publishing digital box office at Max-Tickets.net or by contacting event organiser Createvents: clare@createvents.co.uk or 0118 334 0085.

product display also attracted non-judges to the area, who were on the look-out for the next best products featured in the shortlist, with a lot of trade contacts shared, and interest in all the shortlisted products.

“It was great to be back at Spring Fair to live judge again and for longer, allowing more judges to complete their in-person judging which we know is so important,” said the GA’s PR and marketing manager Chris Workman.

“What we learned from this year was that it attracted a great deal of attention to the area of non-judges, who were looking for great products, so we hope that businesses who were exhibiting got traffic from our stand, as well as non-exhibitors still getting interest and follow ups.”

Pointed out Chris: “Being able to hold the judging during Spring Fair - the most important exhibition on the gift industry’s calendarmakes perfect sense for the future, and speaking to judges on the day we found that this was a great time for them to buy from the Gift of the Year competition and go and meet the companies behind the products.”

Adding her views, The Giftware Association’s ceo, Sarah Ward, said:

“We’re delighted that Gift of the Year 2023 has been so well supported by the whole gift community - from Hyve Group’s commitment as headline sponsor to our strong roster of category sponsors - in addition to the widespread engagement from the suppliers who entered, and the great care and attention to detail from our enthusiastic judges. I can’t wait for everyone to celebrate together at The Gift Awards on 11 May!”

Let’s All Pull Together

“Having attended some 15 trade shows since the beginning of the year - spanning the UK and in Frankfurt - aside from being a little footsore (!), I have amassed a huge amount of industry intelligence, as well as a few thoughts of my own.

As well as the major shows, Spring Fair and Top Drawer, I also put my best foot forward at exhibitions ranging from Giving & Living in Exeter to Scotland’s Spring Fair in Glasgow, as well as Harrogate Christmas & Gift and Showcase Ireland. There were many other shows I attended too in the UK, to include White Label World Expo UK, and, of course, all four shows in FrankfurtAmbiente, Creativeworld, Christmasworld and Sourcingworld - which took place together for the first time.

The most important thing I took back from all these exhibitions - core gift industry shows, and what might be termed ‘fringe’ industry shows, more of which later - is that compared to this time last year, post pandemic, this year’s Spring shows had more energy, with exhibitors in a much lighter positive, frame of mind, many having taken stock of their businesses during the pandemic to re-focus, reorganise, re-strategise and build their cash flow. The result was that they came back stronger, fitter and more robust. Another plus was that, despite the doom and gloom at the end of 2022, recovery had been better than expected.

Something else I picked up on - and this chimed with the Gift of the Year entries we received - is that there has been an influx of new businesses attending shows. The millennial and Gen Z companies in particular have definitely come on board, and with a

different attitude - a new trade show generation who seem to be genuinely excited about the many opportunities that the shows can offer them. Not surprisingly, they’re savvy when it comes to using social media platforms, investing in these channels as well as online marketing platforms such as Trouva, Ankorstore and Faire. To my mind, all these channels have a place today.

New businesses in the gift and home sector also seem to be spending time learning and researching about a myriad of additional trade shows that could generate business for them in the broader sense. Examples include the many hospitality shows - where home fragrancing most definitely has a role - food and drink shows, franchise gift shows and

many others. For these trade show newbies, it seems to be about looking outside the box and spotting the opportunities to drive sales where the opportunities present themselves.

Meanwhile, another opportunity I can see for gift businesses across the board are the emerging international shows where there is a lot of investment happening. Countries that immediately spring to mind are Japan, Australia, and Dubai, with the Dubai show successfully attended by several gift companies at the end of last year.

Wearing my Giftware Association ceo hat, I strongly believe that going forward, our industry is more powerful collectively, and that goes for trade shows too. To make our trade shows successful it is a combined effort requiring show organisers, exhibitors and retailers joining together to generate that success. Collectively, it is everyone in the industry’s responsibility to try and dialogue that better to ensure that we are moving in the right direction. We need to share that energy, and collaboration to really ensure that success. We all need to keep moving forward.”

Visiting a tranche of trade shows in January and February made The Giftware Association’s ceo Sarah Ward more convinced than ever that their future success lies in the collaboration of the industry across the board. Celebrating

TheCoronationKing’s

His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation on 6 May has afforded both gift retailers and gift suppliers a historic, spectacular special occasion to celebrate and be a part of history, with a myriad of companies bringing out Coronation collections, and Royalists – domestic and internationaleager for keepsake memorabilia. PG&H took a peek at who is doing what?

The King’s Coronation is being trumpeted as a three-day spectacle, kicking off with two grand processions on Saturday May 6, followed by a star-studded concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday May 7.

As excitement builds, so does the desire to mark the occasion in some way. Many towns and cities will be holding street parties, people will be making their way into London in their hundreds and thousands, while others will watch the spectacle unfold on TV.

Keepsake mementos are sure to be in huge demand, with a myriad of gift suppliers

bringing out collections to mark the event. “We did really well with our Jubilee collection last year and so were very confident in going big for the Coronation,” confirms Jo Jeffery, senior brand manager at B Corp accredited Talking Tables. “The collection has some playful touches, including an over-sized crown honeycomb and carriage treat stand, along with cake toppers featuring King’s Guards, the Royal carriage and His Majesty. And, of course, given how sustainably minded King Charles III is, the Coronation collection is totally plastic-free and recyclable

or reusable.” Adds Jo: “Talking Tables is all about gatherings, and we’ll be supporting community street parties and sending party kits out to press and influencers, as well as hosting celebrations at our HQ.”

Widdop & Co meanwhile, is marking King Charles’ Coronation with a regal range of commemorative items from the company’s Now or Never Studios. “This quintessentially British selection of decorative keepsakes showcases our new monarch and his official logo,” says Widdop’s product designer Amy Johnson.

“The inspiration behind the collection of designs was to offer something for everyone. We started with three categories - traditional, colourful and Union Jack - to appeal across all target markets,” Amy explains.

“The final choice of 48 products showcases UV printing, engraving and sublimation, with the majority being finished in-house at our Manchester head office.”

The collection features teddy bears, trinket boxes, vintage tea towels and crown door knockers, “but people can also add candles, mugs, plates, jigsaws, and photo frames to mark this historic occasion,” says Amy.

Wrendale Designs launched its Coronation gift collection to trade customers in February, with founder and creative supremo Hannah Dale confirming, “the feedback has been wonderful.” Her

brand new, unique watercolour design depicts King Charles and one of his rescue Jack Russell terriers sitting among his favourite flower, the delphinium, with paintbrushes to hand.

He Who Wears The Crown

As the country celebrates the crowning of a new King this May, Lesser & Pavey will be capturing a poignant image from the day on a new range of fine tabletop items and giftware.

“This is probably a once in a lifetime event marking this momentous occasion,” says the company’s managing director Julian Hunt. “Our in-house design team have been working on a new range of fine china and gift items to mark the occasion, which will feature a distinguished head and shoulder image of the King being crowned. The range will have a bold royal border colour, fitting for such a prestigious occasion, surrounding an image of King Charles III, with the range released immediately after the ceremony,” confirms Julian.

on the inner rim, and a magnetic shopping pad for lists and notes. There has also been a special collaboration with a local company, The Lincoln Tea and Coffee Co, which has developed a Coronation Blend of tea in packaging that features the Wrendale design, tying in with the Coronation mug.

In addition, British designer Victoria Eggs, founder of her eponymous company, has launched a collection of King Charles III homewares, which includes bunting, tea towels, tote bags, mugs and magnets. “The design includes the national flowers from the UK, along with oak, a symbol of strength and stability, and ivy, a symbol of commitment, which trails through the design,” explains Victoria. Nods to the King’s life are also hidden among the wildlife and foliage to

include the eagle, swords, parachute, pens and paintbrushes, as well as an anchor representing the British Armed Forces.

Peter Smith, sales director at Dunoon, highlights that the company wanted to celebrate the Coronation in a very opulent manner, while keeping its commemorative mug design classic and sophisticated.

“The design, by David Broadhurst, consists of a rich gold silhouette of the crowned King on both the front and the back of the fine bone china mug - which is made in Staffordshire - with a partially coloured background in regal purple, elegantly laced with rich 22 carat two tone gold detailing,” he explains.

Also bringing out two fine bone china mug designs for the King’s Coronation is CD Heritage. “They are being made at our factory in Stoke-OnTrent, a city that is proud to have a long history in producing fine bone china for the Royal Collections,” points out Paul. A traditional design, sold direct by CD

Heritage, shows a classic design featuring the Union Jack and the official Coronation crown, with the company also producing a special bespoke version for Ballard Home created by artist Susan Leigh.

At Elgate, the company has unveiled 20 lines ranging from fridge magnets and keyrings to gold plated plates and plush. “We are very excited about this collection

following the success we had with our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee range last year,” says sales director Guy Askew.

On the soft furnishings front, designer Jan Constantine has unveiled a commemorate Coronation collection that features hand-embroidered cushions made from pure wool, as well as bunting and pennants featuring the King’s insignia. “The collection is not only for people who will be celebrating on May 6 but for those who want something commemorative to pass down to the next generation,” points out Jan.

For gift retailers making the most of the Coronation this year, it’s all to play for.

And For Something Different...

As well as the more traditional Coronation merchandise, other companies are putting a more quirky twist on the Coronation theme.

“As duck creators for over 40 years, King Charles was a natural addition to our extensive range of ducks,” says Michael Grant, managing director of Yarto Europe. “In honour of our King’s upcoming Coronation, our Charles duck is beautifully dressed in his Coronation regalia, crown in hand, ready for the occasion. We have had great interest from top museums and heritage sites in stocking him at their retail sites and feel sure he will fly off the shelves!”

At Boxer Gifts and Boxer Books, managing director Thomas O’Brien highlights a commemorative King Charles book. “Here at Boxer, we - along with the rest of the countryare so excited about the King’s Coronation, and what better way to celebrate this historic day than by getting to know King Charles better with Pocket King Charles Wisdom which comes with free POS,” comments Thomas. “Filled with fun, inspirational quotes and wise words from King Charles, soon he won’t only be our new King, but a source of wit too!”

Retailer Views

Gift retailers share their views of last year’s show…

Jo Barber, owner of No. 14, Ampthill

“A brilliant show, it has to be the best ever!

A great mix of publishers, the usual jolly atmosphere and lots of orders placed - I do hope I’m not in on the day they all land! There were so many amazing stands we just couldn’t fit it all in and we were still placing orders a week later.

Another great reason for attending is catching up with industry friends, sharing tips and feeling as though the world has very nearly returned to normal. I loved it, and the 2023 dates are already in the diary!”

everyone was so happy to be there and it was really lovely to reconnect with so many card companies. We placed 17 orders. I really love this show because it is all about the cards and the UK card industry is without a doubt the best in the world.”

Greg Rose, co-owner of Maybugs, Eastbourne, Hailsham and Bexhill-on-Sea

“PG Live is one of the most important shows for us as we use it specifically to find new and upcoming publishers, and this year was the best ever! We placed 21 orders at the show, with 16 of these from the Springboard area with new suppliers. As always, the show continues to be one of our favourites, not just because of the density of high-quality suppliers but also because it’s such a pleasurable experience to attend.”

Caroline Ranwell, owner of Hugs and Kisses, Tettenhall

A Greats’ Drinks Reception

All current and previous Greats winners and finalists are once again invited to enjoy a glass of fizz at the Wall of Fame drinks reception taking place at the Business Design Centre’s Gallery area on the first floor at 12.45 on both days of the show.

“What a wonderfully enjoyable opportunity for gift retailers to meet up and socialise, as well as compare notes about what has caught their eye at the show,” comments Sue Marks, editor of Progressive Gifts & Home/GiftsandHome.net.

As an extra 'gift', all independent finalists and winners of The Greats 2023 receive a £50 golden voucher that can be spent against an order placed at the show with any of the exhibitors.

Anne Barber, owner of In Heaven at Home, Market Harborough

“I honestly thought the atmosphere and my whole day at PG Live was the best at any trade show I have ever been to in my career. I met up with 16 of my current suppliers and placed orders with them all and found three new suppliers. To me it felt special and magical and buzzing - I loved every moment. A very happy day. I’ve got the PG Live 2023 dates in my diary!!!”

Samantha Gibbs, owner of Nest, Stoneygate, Broughton Astley and Thurlaston

“PG Live is so fresh, it kicks off the summer buying season with a great start. There is nothing like seeing the product directly and I am a huge advocate of in person trade shows, they are so important to us. We came away from PG Live really happy after such a productive day!”

Sally Matson, owner of Red Card, Petworth

“A fabulous show! The buzz at PG Live was great - right from opening on the first day -

“We absolutely loved the show, it’s my favourite one of the year - the location is great and as a card buyer it’s brilliant to have so many fantastic companies under one roof, which makes it so easy to get around. I love that you have a Springboard section, as it’s great to be able to see new publishers. I love the buzz of the show, as well as the free lunches and even a champagne reception, that you don’t get that anywhere else!

It is also a great opportunity to catch up with other retailers/friends; to chat and share ideas/experiences with others in the trade. And I placed quite a few orders!

We’ll be at PG Live 2023 with bells on!”

Below: Caroline and Jon Ranwell with Five Dollar’s Matt Genower (right) at last year’s show.

Extra Touches

In addition to the incredible exhibitor lineup, PG Live is also known for the ‘added extras’ that make buyers and exhibitors alike feel special - right from the moment you walk through the door to be welcomed by meeters and greeters who will hand you a limited edition keepsake tote bag, containing a full colour catalogue and lots other goodies.

To keep you sated, a delicious free lunch is available in the Gallery Hall, (first floor), for both visitors and exhibitors, with free teas and coffees being poured throughout the show days - into proper cups!

Everyone is invited to let their hair down at an opening night party on Tuesday 6 June that will see the great and the good in the card industryexhibitors, retailers and trade suppliersclinking glasses and enjoying a fabulous free evening networking opportunity straight after the show in the Gallery Hall.

Hyve Five

A bold new partnership between Spring and Autumn Fair organiser Hyve Group, and Products of Change, has seen the grand launch of a new series of educational resources for retailers, buyers, and brand owners across the gift and home sector, highlights Products of Change’s Rob Hutchins, editor and community manager.

“Okay, we know the score. You hear the word ‘whitepapers’ and suddenly you’ve remembered you left the oven on. The kids need picking up from school. The cat litter tray needs emptying. There are literally a thousand reasons not to read one.

None of those excuses are applicable here. And none of them cropped up when Products of Change embarked on its joint venture with Hyve Group - the team behind Spring and Autumn Fair - to deliver a fivepart series of learning and knowledge resources all on the topic of sustainability. And that says everything you need to know about us.

Yes, you read that correctly. That number. Again, is indeed five. Sustainability is, after all, one heck of a meaty topic to sink your gnashers into. But it’s also one filled with exciting potential to unlock new business models, new revenue streams, and a whole new age of working in harmony with the planet and its resources, rather than battling against it. And the best part is, that knowledge is all at your fingertips, now.

It’s all part of Hyve Group’s ongoing Power of One campaign, built upon three powerful pledges to help retailers take steps to ‘change the world, their mental health, and their environment.’

“Our aim, through collaboration is to assist retailers and brands with their journey to operating a more sustainable, ethical, and regenerative business,” explains Nikki Griffiths, group communications and ESG director at Hyve. “And the aim of the whitepapers is to continue the show’s Power of One activity by providing businesses across the gift and home sector with the

tools to build action, and together reduce the collective impact over the next eight years.”

This is the ethos that sits at the heart of Products of Change. Which is why the team was called upon to deliver the whitepapers - a new suite of resources for retailers and brand owners with a vested interest in the planet.

The Pathway to Sustainability, The Circular Economy, Consumer Trends, Navigating the Green Claims Code and Avoiding Greenwashing, and Legislation; these are the five foundations of the industry’s journey of sustainable development. They also happen to be the five Products of Change x Hyve Group whitepapers - delivered through the creative eye of NOSY. And they all launched in time for this year’s Spring Fair.

The resources have been created by the experts at Products of Change, including

founder Helena Mansell-Stopher, Products of Change’s circular economy ambassador, James George, and packaging and materials ambassador, Mike Swain.

“Education is at the heart of Products of Change and to get the opportunity to deliver some practical guidelines to the industry through our collaboration and help the industry navigate the broad topic of sustainability to build action within business through these whitepapers, is a real privilege,” said Hyve Group’s Nikki. “We can’t wait to see how this work is transitioned into business to drive real action.

“Thanks to our partnership with Products of Change, we can deliver real education to our audience of retailers and suppliers, with which they can begin to build actionable steps as part of a wider strategy to transition towards sustainability and business practices that benefit people and the planet.”

The Products of Change x Hyve Group whitepapers are available to download and read via www.springfair.com. Products of Change members can access the resources via the Members Hub at www.productsofchange.com. Anyone looking to join the Products of Change member community and access the platform’s expanding library of learning resources and industry insight can find out more by getting in touch with me on rob@productsofchange.com.

“We are really excited to deliver this first series of whitepapers through the lens of the expertise at Products of Change,” added Nikki. “We look forward to seeing the positive change we can all drive across business around the world together.”

ManningUP

Father’s Day, on Sunday June 18, presents a perfect gifting opportunity for offspring of all ages and stages to treat their dad or father figure to something special. And while the occasion may not live up to the Mother’s Day spend at gift shops, there’s still an opportunity to really go to town and fly the flag for men’s gifting.

PG&H asked suppliers where the trends are when it comes to thoughtful gifting for men this year, be it for Father’s Day or at other times of the year when only a really special gift will do.

What do you buy for the man or men in your life, and especially one that seems to have everything? It’s an age old question that has perplexed gift buyers as well as gift shop owners in their quest to find that something different. A rather nice bottle of something will always be appreciated, but a bit like a bouquet of flowers, it doesn’t last very long!

So, with Father’s Day homing into view, what’s trending?

“The cost of living crisis has had an impact on what people are spending their money on, so making sure we can deliver quality, fun and usable gifts that focus on themes such as togetherness, fun and family has been our priority,” says Boxer Gifts’ managing director Thomas O’Brien. “With men in mind, our new Whiskey Tasting Set has proved to be a

huge hit, which is down to the simple pleasures of the gift - the quality wood grain packaging, lowball glass and unique tasting book - a fun take on popular ‘beverage’ themed gifts. The staycation trend also looks

like it’s here to stay,” Thomas continues, “with 39% of people saying they plan to stay in England for their main holiday in 2023. For Spring/Summer 2023, we are therefore releasing two fun, durable enamel camping mugs, and a hilarious All Paths pub compass, complete with rustic kraft packaging. These are ideal as fun, quality gifts for those looking to save their pennies and make the most of the UK for their holiday.”

Of course, most of us can remember that buying a pair of prosaic men’s socks as a gift for a birthday or Christmas was deemed as a rather unexciting, unadventurous choice. But wow, how things have changed! Today, colourful, jazzed-up, patterned socks for both men and women have evolved as a desirable, gift-led product, with manufacturers going all out to make not only the socks themselves stand out in a crowd of traditional black, navy and grey, but also, ensuring that they are as comfortable as possible, and sustainable too.

“Men’s bamboo socks have become a huge trend and a fashion statement for men,” concurs buyer Mary Caputo at Joe Davies. “This is due to their not only being the softest and most comfortable socks on the market but also the fact that they offer a way of expressing the wearer’s personality with the power to instantly give the person a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’!”

She continues: “They are already a popular addition to the Equilibrium fashion accessories collection from Joe Davies, with cycling, football and drinking just a few of the popular designs on offer. New designs for Spring/Summer 2023 include

Above left: A special gift for an outdoors-y man, a folding seat from Classic Canes. Left: Boxer Gifts’ Whiskey Tasting set. Below: Some of the colourful new designs in Joe Davies’ Equilibrium bamboo socks for men.

camouflage, rainbow and golf,” highlights Mary.

At Widdop & Co, Leoni Brown, brand design manager for gifting, says that there is increasing demand and popularity for functional gifting. “It’s about making the most use out of a gift and not having throwaway items, even down to functional packaging that can be re-used and utilised in other ways,” she points out.

“There is also a growing popularity for men’s home fragrance with sophisticated, sleek, stylish design - malefocused scents such as tobacco, cigar and cedarwood, with guys also wanting to add fragrance and refined scents to their ladpads and man-caves. Plus, our Mad Man range has a whole array of new product launching this summer, from multi-function gadgets and tools to electronics and stylish wearables. All of the tools have been carefully selected to ensure the handiest of uses, whether they’re for experienced DIYers, climbers and gardeners or for novices who need a one-fits-all handy tool with a multitude of uses.”

At Lesser & Pavey, managing director Julian Hunt says that men are possibly one of the hardest individuals to buy for, “but

humour always seems to be a good theme, with two of our new ranges, Henries award winning Bewilderbeest and Bug Art, making ideal men’s gifts, as they are useful as well as practical.”

The Bewilderbeest collection feature humorous illustrations, together with a caption, across fine china mugs, drinking glasses, coasters, placemats and notebooks, with Julian adding: “the other range that would make dads smile is our Bug Art collection featuring bright, fun, cheerful illustrations spanning cushions, fine china mugs, drinking glasses, trays and ceramic coasters, as well as a range of stationery items. Additionally, for men working in, or based in London, there’s a London themed travel mug from a

Fit For Purpose

With longer days and milder weather on its way, thoughts are turning to spending more time outdoors. “When it comes to men’s gifts, everything has to be very practical as men like presents they can actually use,” points out Charlotte Gillan, managing director of Classic Canes. “We are seeing a lot of demand for folding seat sticks that can be stowed in the boot of the car for picnics and other outdoor events. Equally, there is a lot of interest in formal canes as people enjoy dressing up again after being repressed by Covid. Even if it’s just a stroll by the seaside, a smart cane can add a certain joie de vivre to the occasion. We are also finding that more men are now using patterned canes, especially if it is a pattern that reflects their interests, such as birdwatching, skiing or other lifestyle-related images.”

new range created by our inhouse team.”

“We’re seeing a rise in the demand for men’s gifts that are both practical and personal,” concurs PMC’s Keren Dicken, “with our personalised men’s watches fitting the category as they can have a thoughtful message engraved on the reverse, enabling the gift giver to say what they feel, such as thanking their dad for all that they do, or for engraving a thoughtful message to a loved one. The watch makes an all year round gift that can be cherished every day and for years to come.”

Male grooming has also become a core category over the years, with Mad Beauty’s creative director, Julia Cash, commenting: “With the rise in hybrid working, men need quick, easy routines which can be adapted whether they are in the office or presenting themselves over Zoom. With that in mind, grooming and gift products are becoming quite simplistic - either single items or small sets with fewer components.”

She adds that another trend is genderless or gender neutral beauty, with the company launching Mandalorian and Scooby-Doo, both unisex ranges, targeting consumers who have affinities to the shows.

With such an eclectic range of giftware that have men’s diverse lifestyles at their heart, there's no longer any excuse for retailers, or gift givers, to see men as impossible to buy for!

With a history that dates back to 1870, Bolsius’ origins have allowed the company to become a global player selling into over 50 countries. “We have been very involved in take-overs, and successful in the setting up of a large-scale production in Eastern Europe, with the capacity of having our own storage to house heated raw materials,” explains national account manager Kam Badesha. “It’s unique in our business, with our aim always to make the very best candles. This objective remains unchanged, and we are very proud to be able to say Bolsius is still family owned today. With over 150 years of knowledge and craftsmanship, combined with testing the best recipes and using the best raw materials, we guarantee quality in our products. Plus, as the market

alternative.”

To this end, the company uses only natural extracts for its fragrances, transitioning its portfolio of products to using natural vegan wax, no palm oil, and as little plastic as possible, while continuing to innovate and focus on quality. “It’s the thread that has brought Bolsius to its current global success,” states Kam.

She highlights that one of the key effects of the pandemic has been a continuing focus on the home, with the home ambience category receiving a huge boost over the past three years. “Candles have hugely contributed to this in terms of entertaining, focusing on mental wellbeing through meditation, and for self-care and relaxation,” Kam continues. “We have therefore seen possibilities for converting new shoppers by increasing usage moments, together with support from our retailers. Following recent research, the findings reveal that inspiration is naturally very important when buying candles, which are often purchased in stores which offer a strong interiors collection. Another key driver is encouraging consumers to use candles

In 2020, the company launched Bolsius Rustic collection, a range of sustainable pillar and table candles, in best-selling sizes and contemporary colours. “They provide hours of soft light and can be mixed and matched, with a new Essentials collection launching in Autumn 2023,” highlights Kam. “We are committed to updating our ranges and are influenced by both trends in home ambience and our customers’ feedback. We follow the latest interior trends regarding seasonal coloursSpring/Summer and Autumn/Winter - with our mission to keep our market leader position, and to innovate on style and substance.”

On the retail front, the company engages in long-term relationships with retailers, based on insights and trends in the market. “We believe in a tight cooperation and offer an extensive toolkit to create impactful second placement and/or PoS material,” confirms Kam. “As an experienced partner and market leader, we understand how to grow this category and inspire our customers. We have a dedicated sales team at APAC, and account managers who are trained on Bolsius products. They’re an extension of the Bolsius team, communicating directly with retailers, helping them to choose the right collection for their stores, and also helping with PoS, planograms and merchandising. Plus, we have a stock holding in the UK allowing customers to order little and often - £300 MOQ - with smaller lead times.”

Summarises Kam: “These are the key ways we are looking to grow the candle segment in the UK, and, most importantly, in a sustainable way.”

LIBBY ’ S LINES

Mother’s Day Madness

appeal to those who may be celebrating someone else this Mother’s Day.

“Here at Lovely Libby’s, we are truly in the midst of the Mother’s Day madness. It’s quite new and exciting territory for us. Having taken on the shop in late 2019, we spent both our first and second ever Mother’s Day in a full, national lockdown. However, 2022 gave us a taste for the Mother’s Day buzz, so this year we have been pulling out all the stops!

At the time of writing, the shop is full to the brim with unique gifts, and we’ve definitely taken on board some of the buying patterns we saw last year. We had an influx of younger customers rushing in to buy gifts in the week prior to Mother’s Day, seeking to buy a little something for mum using their own money. Therefore this year, we broadened our range of gifts under the £15 mark. We also wanted to stay away from solely buying into the typical token gifts branded ‘Mum’ that might be put in a drawer in a few months, and move towards more versatile and resourceful gifts and home accessories that would give customers the feeling of getting more bang for their buck.

One of the best-sellers has been Lynsey Johnstone’s range of hand painted glasses and vases. Starting from just £8.50, they are gorgeously unique, come beautifully boxed, and will be used time and time again by the recipient. We’ve found this to be a high priority for customers, given the current

economic climate, and it definitely benefits us too, in that we can carry this stock through the year.

Additionally, we’ve put a real emphasis on our website this Mother’s Day. Last year, we sold a range of pre-made Mother’s Day gift boxes at various price points for mums and nans, and the concept of a present that’s wrapped and ready to give proved a huge hit, so, this year, we wanted to up the ante.

After lots of research and YouTube tutorials, we installed an external app into our Shopify that allows customers to personally select the gifts they want, effectively creating their own gift box that is entirely unique to the recipient. We’ve got a huge range of gifts to choose from, and have included a mix of the standard Mum/Mummy/Nan gifts, as well as lots of non-specific products to

All the items are individually wrapped in pink tissue paper and come presented in one of our new branded boxes that we have been designing over the past year. We’ve even got an option to add a personalised gift message to make it extra special, meaning that they can be sent straight to the recipient in the post. These gift boxes seek to make gifting that little bit easier and convenient within the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and it’s something we are going to expand on with other occasions in the future.

We’ve also been busy prepping for the King’s Coronation. We took a punt in the dark last year and did a huge window display to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. While we didn’t have any products that were specific to the event itself, we dressed the window in red, white and blue, and it proved to be a such a big success that we even had people asking to buy the flower arrangements we had put together in the national colours.

Our ambition has been to go big for the Coronation, so we were really pleased to see lots of companies offering ranges for the occasion at Spring Fair. We’ve definitely tried to avoid the more typical commemorative and touristy products and have gone for more unique and quirky items associated with the occasion. One of my favourites has got to be the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel cuddly toys we’ve got from Keel Toys, which are, of course, all wearing little crowns! We can’t wait to celebrate the historic occasion with our customers!”

“The daffodils are blooming, the nights are getting lighter, and the days are getting warmer (kind of!) - Spring is definitely on its way! Of course, for we independent retailers, at the time of PG&H going to press in mid-March, it’s also a sign that the second biggest calendar date in the year is fast approaching… Mother’s Day!

I am already looking forward to attending in 2023.

PG Live is one of the most important shows for us as we use it specifically to find new and upcoming publishers, and this year was the best ever! The show continues to be one of our favourites, not just because of the density of high quality suppliers but also because it’s such a pleasurable experience to attend.

ADVERTORIAL: BURTON MCCALL

pruned to

The new shears are also excellent for creating a uniform or geometric shape useful for topiary art. Their ergonomic design and soft cushioned shock absorbers make for comfortable use over extended periods.

Designed with the direct input of landscaping professionals, the tool meets specific pruning needs and requirements to make the FELCO 250 an essential tool for those wanting to keep their hedges and shrubs looking their best. Versatile and precise, the shears allow you to shape and maintain hedges effortlessly and efficiently.

The design of the blade itself prioritises both performance and user comfort. The bypass cutting system ensures clean and

precise cuts, while the high-quality, hardened steel construction and a serrated section, allow it to easily cut through thicker branches, up to 15mm in diameter. This serrated section can also be used to cut small wires. The precision ground blades are bent at 13° for improved ergonomics during trimming, making it easier to reach and trim even the most difficult branches.

In addition to its strength and trimming capabilities, the blade edge is chrome coated, for smooth cutting action and corrosion resistance. This coating also reduces the need for edge sharpening, making maintenance of the hedge shears easy.

An added grease bolt also ensures easy maintenance and tool lubrication without disassembling the shears. Additionally, all spare parts are readily available to purchase and can be replaced to extend tool life indefinitely.

THE FELCO FOLDING SAW RANGE IS EXPANDING

Based on the emblematic FELCO 600 model, the new range offers a completely redesigned and improved

take on the folding saw. The FELCO 601, 602, 603 and 604 saws open up new horizons for folding saw enthusiasts.

The new range offers straight and curved blades, suitable for various pruning jobs, as well as meeting the needs of nature and outdoor activity enthusiasts.

Made from solid chrome steel, the blade’s teeth have been optimised to facilitate chip removal, while the blade’s chrome plating reduces friction and increases performance. Each saw tooth tip is impulse heat treated to increase the hardness and extend the longevity of the blade. The blade can also be easily adjusted and replaced.

The handle has a comfortable soft touch, antislip grip to always keep the hand in perfect cutting position. For safety, a secure blade closure and locking system prevents unintentional opening or closing.

Gallery Direct’s spring/summer 2023 collection offers a wide selection of outdoor living products including furniture, accessories, lighting, textiles and mirrors. Lighting is ideal for adding ambience to outdoor areas, with the Tremiti Solar Lanterns being perfect for this. The lamps feature beautiful, ridged glass which gives a lovely lighting effect, and are powered by a solar panel embedded in the teak wood top. With three light intensity settings, the lamps can run for up to 12 hours on the low setting, after charging by direct sunlight. They can also be charged by USB which gives up to 60 hours on the low setting. To find out more about all of Gallery’s products, visit its website.

4: Majestic Seahorse

Jules Vahrman, director of Wild Things Gifts, says that this seahorse crystal suncatcher came about because he wanted a colour version and wasn’t satisfied with the shape of the company’s existing seahorse. It wasn’t until his wife, Vicky suggested a number of changes – including giving the tail a more ‘graceful twirl’ – that the product came together. It was launched at Spring Fair, receiving a positive reaction from visitors.
