Kim Harrup-Brook, esmie: As a creative, what stood out for you among the entries?

Meet the Judges Rebecca Saunders, head of development at leading online curated marketplace notonthehighstreet.com is involved in NOTHS’ ‘Pitch-Up’ sessions to find potential partners. Kim Harrup-Brook, graphic designer and founder of Elegant Stationery Made in England or ‘esmie’ started her business from scratch. She sells through iconic store Liberty and understands the challenge of creating a desirable brand and range of products. Sally Newall is editor of IndyBest, the product reviews section of The Independent, and has a great feel for pricing and what consumers want to buy.

Run by the London Stationery Show, the first-ever LaunchPad competition attracted entries from more than 40 individuals and companies eager to break into the booming UK stationery industry. The panel of three judges had the challenging task of choosing 12 winners, each of which receives a free display space at this year’s London Stationery Show. Read about the winners on the show website or meet them in person at the show. Rebecca Saunders, notonthehighstreet.com: What are the key benefits for the LaunchPad winners?

Visibility and validation; the London Stationery Show is such a fantastic and exciting event in the industry calendar. Getting this recognition at the show will be so important for these brands in getting in front of the relevant buyers and industry contacts. I’m sure the LaunchPad winner area at the show will be a real highlight!

The standard was extremely high, with great variety across different types of products, ranging from beautiful fashion-led pieces to problemsolving functional items. The standard demonstrates the stationery industry

At notonthehighstreet.com we are passionate about supporting small businesses, and stationery is an important category for us. New talent is often the best source of product innovation and creativity, moving the industry forward and giving customers new reasons to buy. Sometimes it’s hard for new talent to get a ‘big break’ and platforms such as LaunchPad and notonthehighstreet can give newer or smaller businesses that head start for success.

Firstly, the wide variety of products, from handcrafted writing implements to beautifully bound notebooks. It’s great to see so many different skills being explored and practised within the one industry. The London Stationery Show is a fantastic platform into the market place. To be surrounded by new and well established stationery brands is always a time for inspiration and reflection, as well as a perfect opportunity to bounce ideas off your peers and to learn from them. As someone in a position to champion new brands, I think it’s hugely important and one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. If we don’t do that and everyone just defaults to the same old brands, the world – and our desks – would be a much duller place. David Hayward Design

Tim Willoughby, COO of Ocean Media Group, which organises the initiative, says: “This is an exciting opportunity for brands to capture the imagination of consumers and retailers, and now is the perfect time to get involved. The campaign is multifaceted and marks an ideal opportunity to present to B2C and B2B audiences, whilst getting involved in some exciting, fun and varied events. Support your industry and help it flourish in 2017.” The NSW team commissioned a YouGov study which showed 92 per cent of adults think that writing by hand is important, and 97 per cent think it is important for children to be taught to write by hand. It’s clearly more relevant than ever to promote this message. This was evident in last year’s successful campaign, which saw National Stationery Week achieve coverage reaching 65 million people across 180 titles. Its social media campaign reached more than 45 million, with mentions from top retailers Paperchase and stationery addict Sarah Millican. Waterstones’ managing director James Daunt, TV presenter Lorraine Kelly and BBC Radio 2 star Jeremy Vine all sparked important debates about the future of handwriting in schools, giving national recognition to the campaign. Nicola Shepherd, trade marketing director for Sheaffer, which has sponsored the campaign every year since the first NSW in 2011, said: “We never hesitate to sponsor National Stationery Week and we continually see a huge return on our investment. STATIONERY GOES GLOBAL Flying Tiger, Hedgehog pencil holder

With ever-increasing numbers of international stationery stores on British high streets, CHARLOTTE KEMP, editor of Femail Magazine at the Daily Mail, asks what keeps the Smiggles and kikki.Ks of the world flocking to the UK? FROM SMIGGLE, with its vibrant, eye-catching designs which have fast become a classroom status symbol, to Fabriano Boutique, where lessons in calligraphy and origami frequently sell out, the appetite for international stationery brands shows no sign of abating. Australian stationery chain Smiggle’s expansion on the British High Street has been particularly dramatic, with a roll out of 90 stores to date and more in the pipeline. But it is far from the only international brand targeting customers over here. What these newcomers offer across the board is a distinctive in-store experience as

well as a strong design ethos, be it the bright colours of Smiggle or the Danish humour at Flying Tiger. Typo, another Australian import, centres stationery at the heart of a quirky, affordable lifestyle brand, with tech accessories and home office products on offer alongside novelty pencil cases, pens, scrapbooking and craft. To enter at the luxury end of the UK market, Italian brand Fabriano Boutique and Swedish kikki.K focused first on flagship stores in central London. While developing an online presence, they both made sure their stores became cult stationery destinations with stylish interiors

designed to reinforce the brand image. Targeted publicity and social media also helped build the brands. Kikki.K has since branched out with a store in Guildford and a Little Boutique in Birmingham, as well as other pop-ups and a concession in Fortnum & Mason. Fabriano Boutique also has plans for expansion, both in terms of its own stores but also through wholesale, selling to top department stores and concept stores. Far from Brexit casting a shadow, it seems that international brands have every intention of staying and developing their brands, as these interviews reveal…

Richard Boyd, managing director of Flying Tiger What attracted you to the UK High Street?

We have seen that the UK customer loves our stores! Whilst the UK high street is tough and highly competitive, it is a sophisticated and curious market that seeks and tries out new ideas and experiences – perfect for Flying Tiger. We currently have 84 stores here. Who is your target market?

The core of our customer base are what we like to call ‘Playful Explorers’ who make up just under 60 per cent of our customer base. They are mainly younger women who live in the city or suburbs, and they love to visit our stores primarily to see interesting and exciting new products that they may not necessarily need. Our Office department is within our top three selling sections and has been going from strength to strength due to the nature of our

unconventional, quirky stationery lines, which change at least four times a year to reflect the changing seasons and trends. Is stationery part of the home offer or for gifting or both?

Our office products consist of small to medium stationery items to larger office items such as bins, small shelves, desk lamps and quirky shaped chalk boards which cater for home and gifting. Many of our quirkier stationery product lines are purchased as gifts.

Flying Tiger’s design aesthetic?

Danish, quirky, colourful, relevant, simple. Has Britain’s decision to leave the EU affected the market?

It has affected the pound and that affects our purchase prices and margin but our customers remain robust and attracted to our prices. Do you have plans to continue expansion in the UK?

Yes, absolutely. We still have a big opportunity in the north of England where we are under-represented. Best sellers in stationery?

Currently our colour and wood clip boards, colourful faux leather notebooks, A1-sized world maps, lollipop-design and heart-shaped pencils and a colourful fabric-covered notebook with pom-pom page marker. Flying Tiger, A4 folders for paper

Claudio Dall’Era, general manager, Fabriano Boutique What attracted you to the UK High Street?

The UK market is one of the most interesting in the stationery and gifts industry. It’s a market with a very long history which values tradition but at the same time is open to new design and really appreciates quality. Our mission is to bring craftsmanship and heritage with a twist of colour to the UK and we strongly believe we can’t pursue this without our own stores. What did you look for in a store location?

London itself attracted us as it is a vibrant and trendy spot where we’re sure our customers are shopping. Are there plans to open other UK stores/concessions?

There are plans for both stores and concessions at the most representative department stores. Developing the wholesale side - our customers also shop

in top department stores and concept stores such as Conran and Fortnum & Mason - perfectly matches with our strategy of bringing our product to market. In addition, as per our history as manufacturers, we’re also targeting the b2b market offering Fabriano tailor-made products. Who is your target market?

Fabriano Boutique is for people who love quality, craftsmanship, heritage and colour. It’s no longer just about notebooks; it’s a lifestyle brand. In a fast-paced world, we offer customers the chance to take time to learn unique techniques such as calligraphy by running classes. Fabriano Boutique, multicoloured folder

Fabriano Boutique, multifunctional elastic band Fabriano Boutique’s design aesthetic?

Colour, heritage, being environmentally friendly (acid- and chlorine-free paper; FSC paper and our brand new collection of crueltyfree backpacks and folding pencil case made with wood) and luxury at an affordable price. Has Britain’s decision to leave the EU affected the market?

So far I’d say that the weaker GBP drove many tourists back to the UK and it has been positive for our store.

John Cheston, managing director, Smiggle How many Smiggle stores in the UK currently?

We have over 90 stores in the UK now, with more in the pipeline. What attracted Smiggle to the British High Street?

The UK market, which is very similar to Australia, clearly has the appetite for Smiggle. We believed it was crying out for a brand with our product range, quality, price point and in-store experience.

value and innovation. Designs are refreshed monthly to make each trip to Smiggle exciting. Are online Smiggle sales growing in the UK too?

Our shops are very much about the in-store experience where customers can play with our interactive products, but we believe it’s all about how you co-exist with online, offering customers the convenience of shopping when (and however) it suits them.

New show director Tim Willoughby, COO of Ocean Media, says “Verdict Retail has predicted that the UK stationery market will increase by some £49 million over the next five years. Most of this growth will be driven by increased ranges, more design-led products and stationery being given as gifts – the London Stationery Show is the place to stock up!”

New initiatives for the London Stationery Show: Craft Business Creative Hub The new ‘Craft Business Creative Hub’, sponsored by leading craft title Craft Business, will run workshops to inspire retail buyers to add a little theatre to their stores. Exhibitors and craft experts will share their ideas for simple demonstrations and workshops – from calligraphy to paper art and present wrapping. Petra Silvant, the top Caran D’Ache demonstrator, will visit from Switzerland to run workshops in the Creative Hub and on the Jakar stand. LaunchPad competition winners display The first ‘LaunchPad’ competition to find new designers and suppliers to the UK stationery market saw 12 winners chosen by our three judges, Rebecca Saunders, of notonthehighstreet.com, Kim Harrup-Brook, of ‘esmie’ and Sally Newall, editor of IndyBest. Bigger seminar programme Visitors can attend seminars from trend forecaster Phil Pond of Scarlet Opus, receive social media advice from star bloggers Laura Seaton (@TiredMummyofTwo, @BlogOnUK)

and Tanya Barrow (@mummybarrow) who have more than 25,000 followers between them. The Stationery Show Awards The Stationery Show Awards are a key reason to visit the London Stationery Show. Look out for new product category: Arts & Crafts. The Giftware Association joins the line up “Stationery is a growing part of the gifting market, and we’re delighted to be supporting this initiative,” says Giftware Association chief executive Sarah Ward. “We will be encouraging our members, both on the supply and retail front, to take this opportunity to review their product offers and think about how stationery-led gifts might work for them.”

STATIONERY BIZ

MADE IN THE UK HENRI DAVIS investigates the importance of homemanufactured product to the British stationery market WHEN I started working in the stationery industry in the late 1980s nearly all the stationery sold in the UK was made either in the UK or in Europe. The only things I remember buying from further afield were photograph albums from Japan and pencils from Thailand. Today the position is completely reversed, with only certain types of products made in the UK. So is it important that we still make stationery products in the UK, and has the referendum vote changed anything? Production in the UK and Europe moved further afield because of the significant cost savings available. Many in the industry believed this far outweighed the longer leadtimes, quality control challenges and increased volumes that had to be bought when dealing with manufacturers in the Far East. However, some retailers, particularly those with own-brand programmes, could not justify ordering high volumes of individual lines. They frequently lacked the infrastructure to manage importing, so having a UK manufacturing capability was critical. Jon Green, sales director of Sinclairs, a UK manufacturer of notebooks including the famous

Silvine brand, has some interesting insights which highlight the pros and cons of the current situation: “In 2016 Sinclairs increased Silvine branded UK sales by over 9%, but post Brexit, trade is somewhat depressed as buyers feel the impact of cost-price increases of up to 15%, linked to the pound/dollar exchange rate. “Importers will probably have to absorb the whole cost-price movement, and as UK manufacturers we are not immune from these increases either, as we also buy bulk raw materials like paper globally. “Regardless, the price gap has closed and UK manufacturers should be confident of future business gains as the Chinese, Indian, Indonesian etc markets start to consume more production domestically, reducing their need to export in such volumes. We have also noticed the more dynamic UK buyers have been looking to move their product sourcing to the UK because of the service and flexibility benefits. “In Q1 the vast majority of goods have increased in costs in the UK, and consumers are now experiencing the impact of the recent referendum. Export benefits are real, and Sinclairs has gained new business as a result

which, combined with our local UK growth, bodes well.” As Jon explains, this change in exchange rates is beneficial for anyone exporting from the UK and at the first trade fairs of the year there were significant numbers of buyers from Europe and further afield keen to buy at these advantageous rates. Kevin Turner at Charfleet Bindery noticed an increase in European customers for their Charfleet range of Linen notebooks, with interest coming from France, Italy, Turkey, Denmark and Portugal. For GO Stationery, exporting has been important for them for a while. Based in London, and manufacturing there too, they now supply stationery to more than 40 countries. Managing director Neil Atkinson said: “The growth of our export business has been fundamental to the success of GO Stationery ... whilst the weaker pound undoubtedly helps with some current price negotiations, most of our business is based on long-term relationships with clients who deal with us for a combination of factors, of which price is just one, alongside quality of design and the fact that we design and manufacture in our own UK factory.” The importance of Made in the UK as a marketing message has varied

NEIL ATKINSON, GO STATIONERY over the decades and this focus now has renewed vigour after last year’s vote, as industry and consumers become concerned about trading difficulties that may develop in the future. As more tourists come to the UK to take advantage of our cheaper prices, they are also keen to take home truly British souvenirs, particularly at the luxury end of the market where brands are important. Suppliers to retailers like Harrods and Selfridges are sure to benefit. Leathersmith of London diaries and undated products are sold in Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty. Their diaries had a very good sell through this year, with these retailers placing top-up orders. This suggests foreign demand was higher this year, and this is supported by the fact that their overseas web sales were up this year, too. Our visitor attractions will also benefit, as will their suppliers; Padblocks is a major supplier of bespoke stationery to this sector. However, there are product sectors like gift and personal stationery where design, finish and detailing have always been valued, and retailers and consumers have been prepared to pay a bit more for these unique features. One standout area is notebooks,

where we now have a wide variety of formats being produced in the UK at competitive prices. A good example of the benefits of manufacturing in the UK is the experience of new entrant to the market Say Nice Things. Sourcing products from the UK was fundamental for their brand as they wanted to support home-grown manufacturing. SNT is positioned at the upper end of the market, so the products have to shout quality and detail on every level. To ensure this, they wanted to be able to work closely, face-to-face and side-by-side with everyone throughout the process; from design concepts to artwork and final production. By creating everything here in the UK they could deliver beautiful, well-made products that are a joy to use, with the additional benefits of smaller quantities of each product design/format and shorter lead times. Card publishers wanting to broaden their product offer have been one of the driving forces behind the growth in demand for design-led notebooks. Because of their understanding of board, paper and print, they have consistently challenged what can be achieved. Having UK manufacturers like Enveco offering lower minimums,

shorter lead times and easier control over the design process, means that for many card publishers, stationery is now a significant part of their annual sales. Notebooks are not the only stationery products ‘Made in the UK’. West Design is a good example of a company making a diverse set of products, including Kids Craft activity kits, West Templates, Magic Color and Stephens papers and chalks, which generate almost half of their annual turnover. Managing director Jo Bray is proud of their Made in UK credentials, and believes the short lead times and flexible MOQs on their products are particularly appealing for UK buyers, as is the exchange rate since Brexit. For me there is no doubt that it is important for us to continue to make stationery products in the UK. In the current economic situation there is demand from retailers, consumers and tourists who want to buy it. For those manufacturers who have been brave enough to maintain capacity in the UK throughout, business is coming their way.

#SOCIALSTATIONERY Far from being an afterthought, social media must now play a central part in any successful brand’s marketing strategy. JULIA FAIERS discovers how stationery is embracing digital THE DIGITAL landscape of social media might not seem a natural bedfellow for the analogue world of stationery, but this is one relationship that can make the difference between a brand’s success or failure. While stationery designers and suppliers live and breathe paper, ink and the handwritten word, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram allow them to put their products in front of customers instantly, bypassing traditional marketing channels. A recent study by the Stationery Matters team into how UK stationery brands do (or don’t) use social media provided a fascinating insight into the industry’s love/hate relationship with social. There were unexpected heroes and notable absences from UK brands on all the most popular social platforms. Perhaps most exciting, young British brand Ohh Deer is the first to build a social community with more than one million followers! That’s a million potential customers who’ve chosen to engage on their digital devices with a company specialising in paper goods. Other companies whose communities run into the tens of thousands include Derwent, Smythson, Filofax, Oxford Notebooks, Santoro London and G F Smith Papers, proving that companies who make pens and paper can master digital. British brands who don’t tweet or post to Instagram to keep their customers in the loop are clearly missing a trick. But it’s not just about getting product in front of stationery fans. Social networks offer multiple benefits. For many, it’s the immediacy of social media which appeals. Elly Vvaller, founder of Dear To Me Studio, a Stockholm-based company specialising in hand-finished paper products manufactured in the UK, says: “First and foremost it’s a platform for communicating directly with the customer, whether that’s wholesale or retail. We use social media to showcase our designs to both

consumers and potential stockists. We’re based in Stockholm and find it’s perfect to reveal what life is like behind the scenes, the finer details and the day-to-day developments in the business. In addition, we can respond to our customers’ needs.” It shouldn’t come as a surprise that stationery brands are excelling on digital, despite their old-school heritage. Creativity and innovative design are crucial to stationery makers and suppliers. It’s not a giant leap to transfer these skills across to digital. The most successful brands on social are those using creative flair. One of our LaunchPad winners, Foggish, are a case in point. As soon as they heard about their competition win, they created a fabulously eye-catching Gif to post on Twitter. It caught people’s attention, and imagination, earning retweets and likes from the industry and consumers. The key is to keep customers excited by a brand’s social media feeds. There are many ways to achieve this, from using video through to hosting a social media account takeover. Rachel Woolley, marketing manager at STAEDTLER (UK), cites Facebook as the brand’s most successful platform, due in part to their creative use of video. “We love to share project ideas of what people can create with our FIMO polymer modelling clay. Speeded-up video clips are a great way to show simple FIMO model creations.” The Art File, for example,

Q. What are your main goals on social media?

Q. What do you think of the industry’s attitude to social media?

A. We use social media to share our enthusiasm for our products and artists and also to increase company exposure. We collaborate with a lot of illustrators, photographers and designers so it’s also a great way to interact with them and find new work that we love and want to publish.

I think overall there are some strong stationery voices online and a lot of companies sharing beautiful product photography and great ideas. We’ve found the social media world to be a positive, inspiring and supportive environment - like a cheerleading club for people who like paper.

Q. Currently what are your most successful platforms, and why?

A. I would say Instagram. It’s really useful for gauging enthusiasm for products we launch and also for keeping an eye out for new trends and artists. We also love using Pinterest to research and get inspired! Q. What’s one of your most successful recent social media campaigns?

A. We’ve been running Instagram ‘Artist Takeovers’ for around a year now. We invite artists that we publish work with to run our Instagram account for the day and we give them free rein to post what they like (all arty stuff, mind). Luckily they’ve all been well behaved so far…

Competitions are a tried-and-tested method to grow a brand’s social media community and to promote new product to a huge audience. Pentel, for example, ran a successful campaign from April to October 2016 targeting students and young adults on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. The campaign, which included student vlogger Kaitlin Dobson’s ‘Stationery Haul’ video review, and an interactive app called It’s a Write-Off, reached over a million people. Players accepted the Write-Off challenge more than 12,000 times. Social media doesn’t need to be the domain of large companies with big marketing budgets alone. Andy Youings, of Say Nice Things, a new company currently selling direct to the consumer, recognises the importance of using social media to get noticed in a busy market. One

advantage for young companies like SNT is the control they have over budgets. Andy says: “We’re finding it very cost effective. Sometimes we’re spending less than £10 to promote our website to a segment of our target audience. We have some very specific interest groups within our customer demographic and we’re finding it invaluable to be really targeted on social media.” Pentel’s Wendy Vickery agrees, saying “what people often forget is that social media marketing can be highly targeted – it’s not the ‘mud at the barn door’ approach that above-the-line advertising can sometimes be. Equally, it’s not under the radar. A properly constructed and professionally executed campaign has the ability to enhance brand awareness, help launch new products and generate demand.” So, what are you waiting for…

TREND SPOTTING Storytelling, humour and foiling stand out for HENRI DAVIS at the first trade shows of 2017 AFTER THE stresses of Christmas trading, the first trade fairs in January and February are a real pleasure. We get to see the fantastic new ranges manufacturers have invested time, money and energy into, so that we can achieve great sales. Trade fairs are a great barometer not just of trends, but also of the mood in the industry. Seeing our manufacturers feel positive enough to develop new products is always a good bellwether, and if the amount of new product seen so far is anything to go by, it should be a great trading year. In contrast many are worried that 2017 will be difficult for retailing, as the initial impact of Brexit starts to hit consumer confidence and therefore spending. Price increases passed onto consumers because of pound/dollar/euro exchange rates will only exacerbate this. Periods of uncertainty can have a positive impact on some sectors. In the last recession stationery benefited, as people wrote more letters and cards to stay in touch and ensure that occasions were celebrated even if money was tight. In tougher times humour becomes increasingly popular. Two Little Boys have launched a great selection of notebooks sold singly or in stylish metal tins with lines relating to their possible use which will definitely make you smile. The range also includes two Books of Mindlessness (shown here) which contain ‘stupid activities, pointless questionnaires and general silliness’ - an antidote to mindfulness.

FOILING AND METALLIC FINISHES WERE VERY VISIBLE AT THE SHOWS.

Quire What this means is that products should offer good value for money in terms of quality and finish for the price charged, and consumers are likely to be looking for products that function well, not just look good. Whether we are suppliers or retailers, our customers expect us to do things even better than before, and will happily move their business to others if we let them down. The pressure is on! Consumers like a reason to buy products, so those with stories to tell are performing particularly well at the moment. Douglas the Boy Wonder is an eye-catching range from Little Dog Laughed, and the characterisation of Douglas (never Doug) the Fox Terrier with the red spotty scarf, enhances the appeal of the already-charming illustrations. The website tells Douglas’s story: the image is based on a real toy discovered in a little antique shop in deepest, darkest Norfolk. His fur is patchy, his stuffing is loose and his wheels are missing… Foiling and metallic finishes were very visible at the shows, taking the trend we saw last year to another level. A stand-out range comes from Leuchtturm1917, launched to celebrate their centenary. This eyecatching selection of metallic coloured notebooks, jot books, diaries and business-card cases in gold, silver and copper are stunning. I saw several luxurious-looking ranges using cream backgrounds with black and gold detailing: including classy stripe and spot combinations, and the elegant Wedgewood range from Portico Designs. While there weren’t many UK retailers at Paperworld this year, it’s clear that distributors who bring us stationery from Europe and beyond have been doing a great job selecting exciting new products for us to stock

liberation from the digital world via a re-evaluation of low-tech, analogue and everyday. The beauty we see in the ordinary; a new appreciation and admiration of slowly acquired skills, a time for artisans and craftspeople. diverse selection on offer; from Wild and Wolf’s colourful Polaroid range and Blueprint’s cute cat Pusheen to the sophisticated Alice Scott range from Portico Designs. We often read about the need to focus on letter writing by groups and individuals keen to encourage youngsters to write rather than use electronic devices. Quire have launched a really lovely range of traditional writing papers aimed at adults, but they also have 3D Paper Statues which will encourage children to write, too. Whatever category you were buying at the Spring Fair, you will not have escaped flamingos, unicorns and donuts: all popular last year and showing no hint of disappearing. I asked Phil Pond of Scarlet Opus, who will present a Trends Seminar at the London Stationery Show in April, what we can expect to see in the coming months. I have given him the last word it makes fascinating reading. “In the coming summer months we’ll see the full emergence of the ‘Analogue Workshop’ trend we spoke of to the world of stationery last year. This is a perfect, if not the perfect design trend for stationery manufacturers and retailers. It translates perfectly into product and merchandising. And it evolves as we move into next autumn/winter to a trend that at Scarlet Opus we’re calling ‘Homeland’. Essentially, these two trend stories counteract the constantly connected, ever updating and accelerating pace of modern life. We reach out for what is grounded, going back to basics. The trend offers

are appreciated (have you seen the recent emergence of chipboard as a design material?) The trends are unpretentious, but precise; products made with these trends in mind have an experienced, craft, workshop aesthetic. They have sober but poetic qualities. The colour palette moving into the AW2017 season is more natural and appreciates earthen colours more, especially dark shades of green. There is a desire for edited-down order, a deep need for comfort and a connection to nature. It’s perhaps austerity and optimism meeting through a mutual love of handmade and crafted. “For those designers and retailers wanting a more futuristic look and feel, our 2018 trend Urban Planet also plays very well for Stationery. It has a metallic colour palette with complimentary blues and greys. But it’s not the stereotypical future aesthetic you might imagine; instead it is a modest futuristic look, with a strong architectural dimension and takes us further into minimalism. The trend uses extremes of light and darkness reflecting the reality of a deserted lunar landscape. “And the biggest retail trend of all? Consumers of today no longer have an interest in simply buying ‘stuff’. They desire a complete and memorable experience. Retailers and manufacturers that provide consumers with what might be described as ‘Instagram moments’ will do very well over the next few years. Those that continue simply to display product for sale might soon find themselves facing very difficult times.” S P R I N G // S U M M E R 2 0 1 7 5 7

Licensing continues to be a strong design source for stationery, with a

Doesn’t that sound like ‘all things stationery’? “Both of these trends (Analogue Workshop and Homeland) have a new retro look with a 1950s brutalist stylistic influence. Everyday materials

diverse selection on offer; from Wild and Wolf’s colourful Polaroid range and Blueprint’s cute cat Pusheen to the sophisticated Alice Scott range from Portico Designs.

STATIONERY BIZ

THE LAST WORD with Julie Bell, owner of Julie Bell Stationery

IT IS SO MUCH MORE PERSONAL AND MEANINGFUL TO RECEIVE A HANDWRITTEN NOTE. I THINK THE TACTILE ASPECT OF STATIONERY IS IMPORTANT TOO. When did your love affair with stationery start?

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?

About 28 years ago when I saw some beautifully hand engraved stationery in Paris. I was not familiar with the process at the time but thought that it could be used in a more contemporary way.

Seeing a design actually come to life and work well. As most of our dies are hand engraved, until we print we have no idea if something is going to work or not. Sometimes they don’t, and sometimes they are way better than we imagined! It is good then to get positive feedback from our customers. I think everyone in a small factory takes pride in the work they produce, so it is good to be able to pass on the praise to them.

How did your business start?

By drawing some Christmas card designs with a lipstick and an eye pencil as I didn’t have anything else to draw with! I had the designs printed in November and tried to sell the cards to shops. I very quickly learnt that that was not the way to do it!

What inspires your designs?

Everything, but especially travelling.

What were the biggest challenges at the beginning?

Why do you think stationery continues to thrive in this digital age?

Not having the support of a large company. No paid holidays, no sick pay and no one to sort out computer problems!

It is so much more personal and meaningful to receive a handwritten note. I think the tactile aspect of stationery is important too.

How did your business grow?

What advice would you give to young people starting off in the industry?

Through exhibiting at trade shows. What are the biggest challenges right now to independent stationery brands?

Do plenty of research before starting, not afterwards!

In our particular case, it is getting enough staff that are trained die stampers and engravers. As with any business, it is also about keeping customers happy and, hopefully, loyal.

What item of stationery could you not live without?

reliable source ...the tape people.

To ‘not live without’ might be a bit strong, but I always like having a notebook on me.
