Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, announced the UAE’s endorsement of the Policy Action Agenda for Transition to Sustainable Food & Agriculture. The document sets out pathways and concrete actions that state and non-state actors can take to repurpose public support for agriculture. It was

developed by the COP26 Presidency, the World Bank, and Just Rural Transition – an initiative that brings together a global community of public and private sector stakeholders to champion equitable solutions to food systems challenges. Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri said: “Individual efforts by countries are not enough to reach our common goal. Recognizing that effective global partnerships play a key role in eradicating world hunger, the UAE endorses the Policy Action Agenda for Transition to Sustainable Food & Agriculture. We are confident the Agenda will drive a much-needed inclusive shift to sustainable agriculture through appropriate policies, investments, and support.” As a prime example of a multilateral effort that drives transformative climate action in the agricultural sector, the Minister highlighted the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), a joint UAE-US initiative that seeks to increase and accelerate investments in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation and R&D over the next five years. The Policy Agenda recognizes the importance of agriculture in producing food, providing livelihoods for billions of people across the world, and contributing to the economy. At the same time, agriculture is the second main driver of greenhouse gas emissions after energy and the major cause of biodiversity loss, which, in turn, undermines food systems, and poses risks for farmers, communities, and economies. The document provides a comprehensive definition of sustainable agriculture, recommends steps to take,

LYTONE PROVIDES THE GLOBE WITH TOTAL SOLUTION FOR AGRICULTURAL SUPPLY CHAIN IN ABU DHABI This November when agricultural professionals and agri-business dealers gather in the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA), Lytone Enterprise as one of the world’s main innovators of next-generation technology in Agriculture, will also be one of the exhibitors in

this major event for the first time. Lytone’s products and services have been widely applied in countries across East Asia, and by stepping into GFIA, the company is expecting to help more clients in Middle East on issues of perishable supply chain. As global shipment congestion continues to worsen, preservation technologies for fruits and vegetables during longdistance logistics has become more serious. Furthermore, climate change and shortage of water also lead to more environmental stress on crop growth, especially in the arid regions of Middle East and North Africa. “For more than 20 years we have been studying and developing solutions for these problems that everyone in the world is now facing. In subtropical Asia

where our company and its branches are located, we have helped local farmers fought against stress like high temperature and humidity, sudden cold wave during the winter, typhoons, severe pests and fungal diseases for decades. We are excited to have this opportunity to bring our experience to all the participants in this year’s GFIA” Said Mr. Charlie Huang, Vice President of Marketing and Sales of Lytone Enterprise, Inc. The company will bring to this year’s GFIA its vaccine-like solution to enhance crop immunity, fast-action trace minerals for stronger and balanced plant physiology, as well as user-friendly preservation technology for post-harvest supply chain operation. Lytone’s booth, at No. C258, can be found in GFIA 2021 in Abu Dhabi

News and innovation and advance technologies are essential to achieve a more sustainable food production system. Speaking from the event, Luigi Scordamaglia, CEO Inalca - Board member of Filiera Italia said, "In 2015 in Milan we announced that we wanted to bring our agri-food exports to 50 billion euros, today we are ready to double that goal, leaving the pandemic behind. After only 5 years we have managed to reduce agricultural CO2 emissions

bringing it to 30 million tons of CO2 equivalent even more extraordinary numbers when compared with those of France which reaches 77 million or with those of Germany which reaches 60 million - and at the same time we have been able to reduce by 32% the use of pesticides, by 15% the use of chemical fertilizers and all this while maintaining the European primacy of the highest food added value in Europe, 64 billion euros, an absolute record”. Units have been sold in Poland, UK, South Africa, Canada and USA.

The Hay Dryer specializes in maximizing value to any hay producer’s operation. The AG Maximizer has been created to dry hay that has been baled into large square bales that has up to 30% moisture content.

1. Park AG Maximizer in field where hay is baled or near where hay will be stored. 2. Bales are fed into the AG Maximizer by tractor/loader. 3. 10-20 minutes dry cycle. Air flow is directed into the hay using 84 spikes in each bale. The spikes are hydraulically lowered, and the fan blows heated air through slots in each spike to evenly dry each bale. 4. After the bale has been in the dryer for the allotted time, the spikes are raised up and new bales are fed in, pushing finished bales down the ramps. The natural ‘sweat’ that baling creates has been accelerated and bales will cool down to ambient temperature within 24-48 hours. The AG Maximizer will dry 6 large square bales (3'x4') simultaneously from moisture levels up to 20% to a moisture level of 12% in approximately 15 minutes. 1. Improves Hay Quality - preserves leafage - maximizes protein/food value - retains colour - allows a producer to bale when hay has high moisture minimizing losses in field

News EIMA, STRONGER THAN ANYTHING The world exhibition of agricultural machinery closes in Bologna with extraordinary results. The "EIMA people" overcame post-Covid uncertainties and consecrated the show as a leading event on the exhibition scene. Certified data released by FederUnacoma and BolognaFiere indicate 270,700 visitors, 25,900 of whom from abroad. A great success for an event that will return in November 2022 and then resume its natural biennial schedule. The world exhibition of

agricultural machinery sweeps away all uncertainties linked to the health emergency and makes an impact with exceptional numbers. After five days, the exhibition closed with 270,700 visitors, 25,900 of whom from abroad, a result that makes EIMA a "top" international event not only in the specific sector of agricultural machinery, but also in the landscape of trade shows in absolute terms. Not only was the number of visitors remarkable, but also the quality of the public, largely made up of businesspeople interested in new products and the purchase of technologies suited to the

most diverse agricultural settings. The cultural part of the exhibition was also very rich, with a total of 116 conferences and seminars on technical and political topics. "EIMA wanted to go ahead this year, despite the inevitable defection of exhibitors and visitors from some countries that are still in a health crisis," comments Alessandro Malavolti, president of FederUnacoma, the association of Italian manufacturers that is organising the event, "and despite the scepticism of all those who were aiming to suspend it until November 2022. News right and the 2022 edition will not be for us the 'restart' edition but the 'reconfirmation' one, the consecration of an event that in the most difficult year has given an extraordinary proof of strength". "On the eve of EIMA we had already indicated as a good result the threshold of 160 thousand visitors, that is, about 50% of those who had participated in the record edition of 2018 - added Simona Rapastella, general manager of FederUnacoma - while the final data indicate an attendance of 85% of the last edition before

the pandemic, a result that seems 'miraculous', but which in reality is the result of a great deal of work by the structure, of our determination to highlight the value of EIMA on the international exhibition scene, and of the exhibiting companies that followed us". Gianpiero Calzolari, president of BolognaFiere, also commented on the success of the exhibition: "We are particularly proud of the results of EIMA 2021 that bear witness to a widespread trend of economic recovery after the pandemic emergency. These

are results that also underscore the importance of an extremely high-tech sector that is strategic for the objectives set by the green deal. Agriculture has a fundamental role to play in the ecological transition, and the operators in this sector are the main protagonists. Today, agricultural machinery is an essential tool for an increasingly important role in agriculture, as the event testified. A heartfelt congratulations to FederUnacoma for the organisational commitment that has led to this success". Eima returns next year from 9-13, November 2022.

T-L IRRIGATION CO. INTRODUCES PRO VERSION OF PRECISION POINT TOUCH PIVOT CONTROLLER Introduces Precision Point Touch Pro, an add-on board combined with a firmware upgrade that dials up simplicity, options and functionality for pivot system controls while decluttering the irrigation workspace. The Pro board, which can be retrofitted to an existing Touch system or added as an option to a new pivot, combines into one simplified package: · Water pump control · Water-pressure triggered start · Two additional auxiliary equipment controls · Water pressure monitoring

· Detailed safety readouts for easy troubleshooting · USB datalogging of multiple system parameters · Load control · Telemetry connect-ability “Precision Point Touch Pro gathers functions once requiring several different systems and external hardware together into one simple, efficient full color touch-screen controller. Plus, the two auxiliary relays allow for greater flexibility and more precise management of the irrigation system as a whole,” says John Thom, T-L Irrigation Co. Vice President. Besides eliminating the complication and expense of external hardware systems, Precision Point Touch Pro adds capabilities such as water pressure monitoring and management. “You get a direct readout of water pressure on the panel,”

20 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

says Neal Schlautman, T-L Irrigation Co. engineering manager. “You can also set a specific psi for the system to build to before the pivot kicks on, assuring the system is irrigating when it starts moving. Safety inputs deliver specific readouts for troubleshooting. “It’s not just a ‘check-engine’ light, it’s a diagnosis of where the problem is,” Thom says. Additional auxiliary relays that allow for specific degree inputs for turn on and shutoff makes it easy to dial in precise pivot management. “A chemigation pump can be controlled to be on for corn and turn off when the pivot reaches the preprogramed spot where a split field switches to soybeans,” Thom says. The original Precision Point Touch has two end gun controls. With the Pro system, a producer can easily tie into the extra relays to control individual spans or an entire half of a pivot. “The Pro panel upgrade just makes the whole irrigation process work seamlessly together,” Thom says.

year Saudi Arabia will be recognized as the ‘Country of Honour’. Under its Vision 2030, the country’s Ministry of Environment Water and Agriculture (MEWA) is looking at increasing broiler production self-sufficiency to 85% by 2030. Interestingly, last year, Saudi Arabia produced 900k mt of chicken, which is roughly 60% of domestic consumption and is aiming at nearly 1.55m mt a year. The Ministry is undertaking various initiatives to achieve broiler production self-sufficiency – it is offering direct productionbased subsidies to local chicken meat producers, encouraging foreign companies to invest in the Saudi market with a focus on poultry and offering 100% ownership to local producers among others. MEWA also aims to increase the production volume of aquaculture farms to 600K tons by 2030 (65% of the market). While Saudi Arabia is VIV MEA Country of Honour for this 2021 edition, the show organizers are looking forward to welcoming all professional visitors from the GCC countries as well as from Africa and the rest of Asia to mark their presence for VIV

MEA 2021 in Abu Dhabi. Positive news for safe travel Abu Dhabi has finally opened its borders for international travelers. All the vaccinated people can now visit the city without having the need to quarantine themselves after undertaking the necessary PCR tests. Travelers can register themselves on AlHosn, the UAE’s official app for contact tracing and health status related to COVID-19. Even though the green status on this app will become your free travel pass to go anywhere in the city, entry to ADNEC is allowed only for vaccinated individuals. Animal Nutrition

THE EXPERT’S CHOICE IN MINERAL NUTRITION M INTREX® is the only worldwide commercially available bis-chelate on the market for use in animal feed that contains HMTBa as the ligand, providing additional benefit. MINTREX® is the most bioavailable trace mineral option, meaning it delivers the most product to the site of absorption. This allows for those lower inclusion levels to be met without sacrificing performance of the animal. The simplest way to explain the differences is by understanding the bonds surrounding the mineral: in the case of inorganic trace minerals

34 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

(ITMs), it is an ionic bond that creates the mineral salt through opposite charge attraction. In an organic trace mineral (OTM), a much stronger covalent bond is what binds the mineral to a ligand, improving its bond strength through electron sharing. But even within OTMs, it is important to understand that there are significant differences. What sets MINTREX® apart is two things: 1) the mineral is chelated, meaning there are four coordinate covalent bonds surrounding each mineral; 2) the ligand is HMTBa, which provides benefits in and of itself once it separates from the

mineral in the small intestine and is absorbed. The neutral charge achieved with the structure of the MINTREX® molecule makes it less reactive to antagonisms ensuring that the mineral reaches the site of absorption. Due to its properties, MINTREX® bis-chelate provides more bioavailable zinc, copper or manganese for superior animal performance: reproduction, tissue integrity, immunity, meat quality and environmental footprint.

MODERN FEED CONCEPTS IN ANIMAL NUTRITION

N

agel Feed Ingredients (NFI) is an internationally operating company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, specialized in producing and supplying different feeding solutions based on monoglycerides of short and medium chain free fatty acids. We supply the national and international markets through our company specialist in Germany, specialist abroad and large number of technologists and experts that are dealing with product development, scientific research, production, logistics and warehouse. Our VilliVital smart feeding concept provides prevention and control of pathogen’s pressure at farm’s level (GRAM+; GRAM-; fat enveloped viruses).

A synergistic combination based on α-monoglycerides provides environmental friendly solutions that: • Are active in the entire GIT and bloodstream • Are more effective than free fatty acids • Allow to avoid AB usage as a growth promoter • Allow to reduce veterinary treatments • Allow to reduce AB treatments • Boosts effect on the immune response • Improves animal performance Supplementation of the diet with monoglycerides produced by our company showed a substantial improvement in animal performance and health status. As a result, the usage of antibiotics as AGPs or as therapeutic treatment could

be reduced. Our current field trials and scientific literature supports the findings in this field study, showing the strong antibacterial effects of monoglycerides compared to different antibiotics. Through all the Mr. Roland Henkel, Managing Director years working with Monoglycerides, we at NFI found an innovative way to deliver α -monoglycerides as a free flowing products without compromising bioavailability. Animal Health

THE EFFECTS OF ESSENTIAL OILS ON COCCIDIA lack appetite and have a decreased feed efficiency because of damaged intestines. All of this can lead to poor growth rates and weight gains. Clinical symptoms of coccidiosis can be anorexia, depression, abdominal pain, dehydration, acute weight loss, weakness, and diarrhea, of which diarrhea is the most common symptom.

C

alf coccidiosis is a common health issue in calves from around 3 weeks old until 1 year of age. The disease is caused by protozoan parasites of the Eimeria genus and is transmitted through oocysts that are found in the feces of the animals. The disease mainly occurs where animals come together or are crowded and where feces are more concentrated in the environment. Coccidiosis outbreaks are also occasionally seen when young and older calves are grouped together. Calves suffering from subclinical coccidiosis show no typical symptoms. They can

Natural alternatives Essential oils and plant extracts are becoming more popular as alternatives in animal production. In the first place because the general public is demanding a greener supply chain, but also because of the limitations of traditional solutions such as bacterial resistance. Essential oils are very complex structures (in comparison to the usual single synthetic compounds) and it is this complexity that makes

resistance to be less likely. In line with the growing attention for safe and efficient alternatives, Resco is creating a range of phytotherapeutic boluses. Coxicryptop contains (amongst others) essential oils from clove, cinnamon, and eucalyptus and extracts from garlic. Coxicryptop study A study was done on 18 calves to check the effect of Coxicryptop on the amounts of oocysts in feces, in comparison to the effect of two known coccidiostats. 9 calves received Coxicryptop and 9 calves received the two coccidiostats. Results show that the calves that received the boluses have comparable numbers of oocyst per gram as the calves that received the traditional coccidiostats. Furthermore, the group of calves that received Coxicryptop gained on average 30 grams per day more than the control group. It is concluded that Coxycryptop is a satisfying natural alternative to coccidiostats. For further information, visit www.resco-global.com

INTERVIEW

Which are the main values of the Company since its conception? “Family, union and respect of all are the fundamental aspects, constantly present in our approach to our business. The Company started with two people and today we are a Company of 50 families. The personal relationships are the leitmotif of our Company, with a clear vision, which is the added value from a commercial perspective. Irrigation

GROWSTREAM™ - WORLD’S ONLY IRRIGATION THAT TALKS TO THE PLANTS

I

rrigation increases agricultural yields and outputs and helps to stabilize global food production. The roughly 17% of the world's cropland that is irrigated produces over onethird of the food and fiber grown globally. Irrigation’s importance in the global food system is expected to increase. Approximately 250 million hectares of land are irrigated worldwide, a five-fold increase relative to the beginning of the 20th century. Water security is a powerful concept that is still in its early days in the field of nutrition. This water crisis is driven by rapid population growth, economic growth, and urbanization that, in turn, increases domestic and irrigation water demands. While water availability is a straightforward physical phenomenon, access is more complex and is shaped by structural and individual characteristics. Considering its importance for global food production and food security and considering its implications for the quality and quantity of water resources, effective irrigation water management is a global priority. Whether or not current levels of irrigation are sustainable, and whether additional irrigation is possible, clearly depends strongly on the availability of water supplies.

50 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

Based on these factors, RDI’s GrowStream™ was developed over the past decade and has been launched globally. It is the only irrigation system that talks to the plants. Growstream™ is a precision irrigation system that is driven by mother nature, delivering water when the

plant interacts with the system. As a result, healthy, faster plant development occurs, increasing crop yields and leading to food security, while reducing water and energy consumption. The system does not require complex flow/ ET calculations. There’s no electricity or controllers to program. It's

Irrigation simple to install and maintain. There’s no root intrusion, no clogged or blocked emitters, and the need for hydrozones is eliminated. What makes RDI GrowStream™ the world’s first PLANT-RESPONSIVE irrigation system is its microporous tube that is installed subsurface near the root zone. It is made with a unique combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic components, which holds water in the tubing at a very low pressure, releasing water only by the interaction of plant root exudates with the system. This unique feature of this innovative irrigation technology made it an ideal

choice for adoption in many projects across the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Europe, and Africa. RDI is proud to have initiated some challenging projects in the desert regions of the UAE to convert sandy, non-farmland into arable land that can produce vegetable crops. Beginning with the 5-hectare sweet corn project and a vegetable project of 3-hectares with Alfafa farms in Al Khattim, the project is taking the desert by miracle with the sweet corn growth. Jan Gould explains, “The power of our plant-responsive technology and our innovation to help plants adapt to extreme temperatures will clearly establish the impact of

Irrigation RDI’s disruptive technology, which will forever change crop production in the desert. For generations, the people living in water-scarce, desert regions have had to diligently work and strive to create productive farmland in the harshest of environments. It remains RDI’s mission to work with people from every country to introduce GrowStream™ to meet increasing food production demands and conserve water, the planet’s precious resource that’s essential to all life.” RDI has also been involved in system installations with progressive companies in the UAE that are implementing new technologies to increase food production and the quality of produce in the UAE, including installations at Alfafa Greenhouse for 3200 tomato plants, four greenhouse trials dedicated for cucumbers against standard drip irrigation system. The findings and observations showed a fast and steady growth of equal plant height and more fruiting compared to that of other drip Irrigation systems. The installation at Emirates Hydroponics in Al Rahba, growing Baby Rocca using RDI’s GrowStream™ have completed multiple harvesting

52 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

and plants have showed no water stress and they are beginning to add fertilizer to boost the remaining stalks to have new sprouts. During the entire comparative trial against the standard drip at Emirates Hydroponics, the study concluded based on the length of trial, the germination rate of the RDI GS tube to be 88%, while the SDI is 60%. In another upcoming UAE project, RDI will be working in collaboration with SILAL to install GrowStream™ in November 2021 at Al Foah Organic Farms in Al Ain, which will have the RDI system installed to irrigate 650 Date Palms in a comparative study against drip irrigation. These projects will compare

RDI GrowStream™ against the leading irrigation technologies, demonstrating GrowStream’s™ ability to transform desert regions to green, crop producing land. As urban areas grow with rising populations, communities around the world must prioritize waterconservation in green spaces to ensure enough water resources are available for the Earth’s growing population. Jan Gould’s commitment to leverage RDI’s technology for the planet’s future is finally taking shape, injecting much needed hope for a sustainable future for her grandchildren – and their 8 billion fellow global citizens. Water Treatment

IMPROVE WATER QUALITY used in combination with our oxygen meter, the oxygen level will be stored every 5 minutes and will be displayed on the computer. This aeration system is maintenance free and has a guarantee of 7 years and a lifetime of at least 15 years.

T

he OxyBull aeration system ensures that the oxygen concentration in both the water and around the roots of plants is at optimum level (100%). The OxyBull also moves the water around in a water storage tank or pond. Because water is moving it’s impossible to have algae growth. High levels of oxygen in the water are crucial for water quality and growth of healthy plants. To ensure optimum levels of oxygen input, the OxyBull system is a must have to create the perfect water conditions. When the OxyBull system is

54 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com

Plant vitality It’s important to grow more productive plants. The increased availability of oxygen atoms also improves the absorption of nutrients. If roots have a lack of oxygen, they have no choice but to replace it with other compounds. They then start with the production of ethylene. However, this causes cell damage and increases the risk of pathogenic diseases. The temperature is the most important variable that influences how much molecular oxygen the water can hold. The higher the water temperature, the lower the amount of dissolved oxygen that can be retained by the

water. This is the reason why aerobic bacteria multiply effectively. How important is oxygen in water Dissolved oxygen is the first defense against anaerobe bacteria that causes pathogenic fungus in soil. It also stimulates a faster root growth and a greater density of the fine root hairs, which are in fact responsible for the absorption of water. This intake requires a lot of energy from the plant in the form of oxygen. Plug-and-play The OxyBull aeration system can easily be connected to the pond or the water storage tank. It is therefore a plug-and-play system and only consumes power and requires no maintenance. Over the years, more than 10,000 OxyBull aeration systems have been installed worldwide.
