News BALADNA TO EXPORT DAIRY BUSINESS MODEL TO MALAYSIA Baladna Q.P.S.C. (“Baladna” or the “Company”), Qatar’s largest dairy and beverage producer, has signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (‘MoC’) to produce fresh dairy products in Malaysia. The MoC agreed with Malaysia’s state-owned FELCRA Berhad (‘FELCRA’) and agriculture giant FGV Holdings (‘FGV’) aims to produce 100 million litres of fresh milk within the first full year of operation, pending the satisfactory completion of a feasibility study. The MoC is a key step forward in Baladna’s international expansion plans, which include replicating the company’s achievement in shifting Qatar from milk import dependency to self-sufficiency

during the regional diplomatic crisis. Baladna will jointly invest in an integrated dairy farm in the town of Chuping in Perlis, which borders Thailand and is Malaysia’s smallest state. The initial focus is to establish a dairy herd of 10,000 high yielding milking cows. The parties aim to reduce Malaysia’s reliance on milk and dairy imports and to support local communities. Other potential areas include utilising Malaysian agricultural land to produce most of the required animal feed for dairy farming, as well as using the joint venture farm as a hub that supports small rural farms

in developing small cattle fatting farms and animal feed farms by 2024. Moutaz Al-Khayyat, Baladna Group Chairman, said: “We are proud to partner with FELCRA and FGV to transfer Baladna’s know-how and business model. This will ensure that Malaysia’s fundamental nutritional needs are no longer majority dependent on imports. With the support of our shareholders, we are increasingly transitioning into a truly international company. EVONIK EXPANDS NIR SERVICES FOR FEED RAW MATERIALS AND FEEDS With the implementation of the ISO 12099 standard for near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), updated and expanded calibrations for feed raw materials and feeds, along with new functionalities in AMINONIR® Portable, Evonik now offers its customers in the feed industry an even more comprehensive service. In addition to feed additives, such as amino acids, and concepts for protein-reduced diets, analytical services are a component of Evonik’s system solutions for feeding farm animals in a healthy, efficient, and sustainable way. “Only those who know the exact quality of their raw materials can use them to produce high-quality feeds that meet the animals’ needs,” says Dr. Stefan Mack, head

of Service Marketing in Evonik’s Animal Nutrition business line. “Since this quality can vary greatly, determining amino acids, basic nutrients, and other raw material parameters in the feed mill or on the farm is essential.” For decades, Evonik has relied on a combination of wet chemistry and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). “Through elaborate wet chemical analyses, we have created the data basis for reliable calibrations of NIR spectra,” says Dr. Ingolf Reimann, head of Analytical Services in the Animal Nutrition business line. These calibrations have recently been carried out in accordance with ISO standard 12099. Laboratory processes and documentation have been adapted accordingly. For benchtop NIR instruments, Evonik has expanded its broad

offerings with new calibrations for various insect meals and marine species meals such as shrimp, squid, and krill, as well as for cow feed (beef cattle and dairy cows). “This enables us to provide the feed industry with new sources of protein,” says Reimann. Calibrations for a number of raw materials such as corn, fish meal and soybean meal have been updated in line with the regular schedule. AMINONIR® Portable, Evonik’s mobile NIR service available since the end of 2020, can now also be used with an iPhone or iPad. For Android phones, the second app version is available. New functionalities include even faster first-time setup and scanning of samples, as well as integration options for barcodes and geodata.

BRAZIL INCREASES CHICKEN EXPORTS AND VOLUME IS 8% HIGHER IN 2021 In the first seven months of this year, Brazilian chicken meat exports totaled 2.7 million tonnes. The number is 8% above that registered in the same period last year (2.4 million tons) and, in terms of revenue, there was an increase of 15.7% in the period. According to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), compared to July 2020, the volume shipped abroad was 16.4% higher last month and is the third best result in history (424.4 thousand tons). “The economic recovery of several importing countries and the substantial increase in the

number of people vaccinated against covid in the world have contributed to the volumes achieved in recent months”, said the director of Markets at ABPA, Luis Rua. “The trend is for high volumes in exports until the end of the year.” China remains the main importer of the Brazilian product and, considering the seventh month of last year, increased purchases by 4.5% in

July 2021 (63.1 thousand tons). In second place, Japan bought 35.7 thousand tons (+2.6%), followed by the United Arab Emirates with 34 thousand tons (+75.7%) and South Africa with 24.6 thousand tons (+36% ).

DOXAN-50 – A NEW ANTIBIOTIC FOR ORAL THERAPY OF ANIMALS AND POULTRY The number in the name of the novelty is the percentage of the active ingredient in its composition: 500 mg of Doxycycline hyclate in 1 g of the drug. Doxycycline is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the tetracyclines group with a broad spectrum of action. It has a bacteriostatic effect by inhibiting the protein synthesis of pathogens in the bundle of aminoacyl-transport RNA (tRNA) with the complex “informational RNA (iRNA) – ribosome”. Doxycycline is active against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus spp., Diplococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus spp., Bacillus anthracis, Clostridium tetani, Clostridium perfringens, Listeria

monocytogens) and Gramnegative bacteria (Haemophilus influenza, E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Yersinia spp., Pasteurella spp., Bordetella bronchiseptica), as well as against mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma spp.), Rickettsia spp. and Chlamydia. A feature of Doxycycline is rapid absorption in the digestive tract of animals and poultry with a maximum concentration in the blood serum after 2-4 hours. Doxycycline penetrates well into the lungs; therefore it is effective in the treatment of respiratory infections. It binds to blood proteins by 80-90%. Doxan-50 is developed for the treatment of calves (up

to 8 weeks of age), suffering from septicemia, respiratory diseases (bronchopneumonia, pleuropneumonia, atrophic rhinitis, etc.), and the digestive tract (colibacillosis, salmonellosis), caused by pathogens susceptible to Doxycycline. It is also used to treat chickens (broiler chickens, replacement chickens) in case of colibacillosis, salmonellosis, chlamydia, septicemia, as well as respiratory diseases caused by pathogens susceptible to Doxycycline. Doxan-50 is available in the form of a powder (yellow or light yellow) for the preparation of an oral solution. Supplied in 1 kg foil bags. It is recommended to administer the antibiotic for 5 days.

For several months, the Cobb Flock Management app has given customers around the world the power to access expertise, make decisions, and help manage flock production right from their fingertips. Now, Cobb is bringing this quality, simplified user experience to even more customers through new languages and a desktop feature. In addition to mobile device access, customers with an account can use the app from their desktop, and it is now available in Russian,

ARLA’S BONDS ARE GOING GREEN Arla has issued its first green bonds to help finance the transition towards a climate friendly future. Arla has set an ambitious science-based climate target of reducing CO 2e emissions by 30% in 2030 and has an ambition of becoming carbon net zero by 2050. With a strong focus on sustainability across the entire value chain, Arla is exploring all opportunities to reduce its CO 2e footprint and improve its green handprint. Now, investors can support the transition by purchasing green bonds issued by Arla. The SEK 1.5 billion

(EUR 148 million) proceeds from Arla’s green bonds will be allocated to green investments within the cooperative. “Green bonds support our green thinking and is one more step towards a carbon net zero future. As one of the largest dairy companies in the world, we owe it to consumers and climate alike to take responsibility and play our part. As a cooperative we work hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain – from farm to fork – and are taking every step possible towards

a green future,” says Chief Financial Officer at Arla Torben Dahl Nyholm, adding that the decision to issue green bonds is an integrated part of Arla’s financing strategy. Arla has successfully issued a floating rate green bond at the Swedish bond market in Swedish kronor on May 7, 2021 at a credit margin of 0,68%. “Sweden has a large corporate bond market which, combined with the fact that Arla is a household name in Sweden, makes it very attractive for Arla to utilize this market,” explains Torben Dahl Nyholm.

DSM ACQUIRES NEXT-GENERATION EUBIOTICS PLATFORM START-UP Royal DSM, a global sciencebased company in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living, has acquired Midori USA, Inc. (“Midori”), a biotechnology start-up with a novel precision platform developing breakthrough targeted eubiotics that improve the health and environmental impact of animals. DSM already owns 38.5% of the shares of Midori and has acquired the remaining 61.5% for a consideration of US$63m. Boston Massachusettsbased Midori has developed a technology platform that identifies glycans derived from natural food sugars that can precisely modulate how the gut microbiome functions in animals. These glycans provide

an effective and consistent impact on animal gut health, leading to improved nutrient utilization from feed and improved animal health. Such eubiotics can reduce the environmental footprint of animal farming and support the accelerated replacement of antibiotics in animal feed. The use of eubiotics has grown significantly as farming practices shift to become more sustainable and along with the need to provide antibiotic alternatives. Midori’s platform is highly synergetic with DSM’s bioscience capability and current eubiotics portfolio, which was further strengthened through the acquisition of Biomin (as part of the Erber Group).

DSM will launch its first targeted glycan - Symphiome™ - later this year. This unique eubiotic will be the first product from DSM’s collaboration with Midori, leveraging functional modulation of the gut microbiome to improve the gut health, feed efficiency and welfare of poultry, while reducing the use of antibiotics and lowering the environmental emissions of poultry farming. Symphiome™ will be the second novel mode of action eubiotic product that DSM will bring to the market after the successful launch of Balancius®, a breakthrough innovation that improves the overall digestive health of animals.

FAO AND THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA JOIN FORCES TO REDUCE FOODBORNE ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Republic of Korea, through its Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), signed a new Framework Arrangement which establishes overarching terms and conditions that will govern the cooperation through voluntary contributions and facilitate future negotiations between MFDS and FAO. The Arrangement focuses on food safety and standard setting, and contains a Contribution Arrangement which will help to simplify the implementation of individual projects. The Republic of Korea will provide $10 million to help implement and monitor Codex Alimentarius international food standards, with the goal of containing and reducing foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR not only poses a major threat

to human and animal health, but also has serious implications for food safety, food security and the economic wellbeing of millions of farming households. The first project under the Arrangement will be implemented by the Joint FAO/WHO Centre on CODEX Food Standards and Zoonotic Diseases the FAO Division on Food Systems and Food Safety, and will focus on implementing Codex standards to support containment and reduction of foodborne AMR in six countries: Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Nepal, Bolivia and Colombia. Signing on behalf of FAO, Deputy Director-General, Beth Bechdol, praised the Republic of Korea’s continuous interest and effort to increase cooperation with

FAO and its deep commitment for the development of international food standards and to the Codex Alimentarius. “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how important it is to boost international food safety standards to ensure our food keeps travelling safely across borders, safeguarding food and nutritional security. We must transform our agri-food systems to make them more resilient and inclusive if we are to ensure a better food future for all.”

GI OVO’S BRAND NEW SYSTEM FOR DUCK AND TURKEY EGG TRANSPORTATION Following the very successful EggsCargoSystem® for chicken eggs, GI OVO has now also developed the EggsCargoSystem XL. The XL system is specially designed for the transport of duck and turkey eggs. The system consists of a tray which is designed for 20 eggs and which offers maximum comfort and protection to the eggs. In addition, it consists of a pallet with the dimensions 120x90 cm. These pallets are exactly matched to 12 stacks of trays per row. Finally, the system consists of a divider. This divider makes the use of empty trays on top of the stacks unnecessary. The stacks of eggs can also be slid over the divider instead of having to be placed. That makes the work much lighter and faster. The

system can be build up to 5 rows containing 7.200 eggs per pallet. The entire system can also be picked up and unpacked with robots. In case of bad roads, the EC protector can also be used. This protector connects the top layer of eggs with the row below and prevents the top layer from jumping with the risk of unnecessary damage to the eggs. All parts of the EggsCargoSystem XL are made of durable plastic with an antiaging additive. If desired, the system can also be provided with Clean Compound®. GLANBIA IRELAND FARMERS COMMIT TO A 30% REDUCTION IN CARBON INTENSITY BY 2030 Following over a year of intensive planning, Glanbia Ireland has pledged to achieve a 30% absolute reduction in carbon emissions from its processing sites by 2030 and will work with their dairy farmers towards a similar cut in carbon intensity from milk production. The ambitious targets are laid out in a comprehensive sustainability strategy launched, called ‘Living Proof’. RICARDO TO ASSESS FEASIBILITY OF USING AN INNOVATIVE CARBON CAPTURE SYSTEM FOR GREENHOUSE GAS REMOVAL As part of its mission to support the decarbonisation of the global transport and energy sectors, Ricardo, a world-class environmental, engineering and strategic consulting company, has announced that it is leading a consortium that has won funding to design a community scale greenhouse gas removal system. The funding is awarded by the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio. The consortium combines the hot air turbine technology from Bluebox Energy, which provides renewable energy to homes, business parks and agriculture, with Ricardo’s expertise in carbon capture technologies and 100year track record in engine development. The consortium will develop a highly innovative greenhouse gas removal technology, which will also provide renewable heat and electricity for towns, villages and agriculture.

Dr Mike Bell, Ricardo Group Strategy Director said: “Ricardo is well known for its mission to decarbonise the global transport and energy sectors. In partnership with Bluebox Energy, this project is a great opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of applying tried and tested technology from the automotive engineering sector to remove greenhouse gases. We aim to demonstrate that this kind of carbon capture system with combined heat and power can be used to benefit local communities and bolster the UK’s reputation as a pioneer in green technologies.” The technology works by taking sustainably sourced waste wood from domestic timber production and then processing it in three ways: producing charcoal; generating heat and power; and capturing, using and storing carbon dioxide. The technology,

therefore, captures up to 95% of the carbon dioxide in the wood and supplies local homes and businesses with renewable heat and electricity. It also produces commercially marketable carbon products: the charcoal, or ‘biochar’ can be used by farmers for animal feed and to enrich soil, and the carbon dioxide can be used for low-carbon concrete.

TESCO DAIRY FARMERS AND WWF TEAM UP TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE AND IMPROVE HERD HEALTH

An innovative trial to offer UK dairy farmers attractive subsidies that support growing feed more sustainably for their livestock, has been launched by Tesco and WWF. Through the scheme, created to help reduce the environmental impact of the average shopping basket, 15 farmers in Tesco’s Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) have been given an 80 per cent seed subsidy to plant herbal leys – a soil enriching grass mix of plants, legumes and herbs which is used as feed for dairy cows. The seed mix has a number of benefits over conventional grass fields including: • Increase on-farm biodiversity: different plant species attract a

range of insects and pollinators, as well as birds and other wildlife. • Reduce carbon footprint: some of the legumes take in nitrogen so do not need as much artificial nitrogen fertiliser to grow. Over time, they also sequester more carbon in the soil than conventional ryegrasses. • Improve soil health: different plant species have varied and deeper rooting structures than conventional ryegrasses. This in turn increases resilience in the face of adverse weather conditions like drought. • Improved water quality: improved root structures minimise soil erosion and fertiliser run-off. • Improve animal health: different plant species provide nutritious food for the animals and can even increase immunity from some diseases.

Even though cows are responsible for two per cent of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, given Britain’s love of milk, finding a way to reduce the carbon emissions associated with dairy farming, while also increasing biodiversity could lessen their environmental impact. The herbal leys trial is part of a wider set of measures being introduced by Tesco, designed to emphasise the importance of cutting carbon emissions and improving biodiversity on farms. Tesco dairy farmers have reduced their carbon emissions by 6.5% since 2016. Tesco has now introduced a new emissions reduction target with the aim of helping TSDG farmers reduce their emissions by a further 10% by 2025. Plans to improve soil quality, water usage and biodiversity will also be implemented on each TSDG farm.

In fact, for the first time, Fieravicola will be held in Rimini in parallel with Macfrut, the international trade fair for the fruit and vegetable sector. The In-Pen Weighing Position measures individual animal partial body weight and growth. It weighs every second an animal is standing at the water trough, which can equate up to 450 weights a day.

AKER BIOMARINE COMMISSIONS GEA TO DESIGN THE WORLD’S FIRST KRILL PROTEIN PILOT PLANT On behalf of Aker BioMarine, GEA is to design and deliver the world’s first pilot plant for hydrolyzing krill protein. The client is a biotechnology company based in Norway that fishes for Antarctic krill – tiny shrimp-like crustaceans – and uses them to develop ingredients for functional foods, aquaculture and animal feed. Slated to come online in late 2022, the new pilot plant will produce a highly concentrated protein isolate destined for

food and beverages. The partners signed the engineering, procurement and construction contract valued in the doubledigit million euro range in July 2021. “With GEA’s expertise in engineering plants for food ingredients, we look forward to starting operations in a highly innovative facility that will also house our research and innovation center,” says Kees van de Watering, Vice President Process Engineering Aker BioMarine. Through its activities at the new site in Ski Næringspark near Oslo, the company aims to help evolve Norway’s marine biotechnology competence cluster. As a manufacturer of seafood ingredients, Aker BioMarine believes it has a responsibility

to improve human health through product innovation and sustainable harvesting technology without compromising the health of our planet and its marine ecosystems. To this end, the company intends to decarbonize both its krill fisheries and production. TANMIAH DELIVERS 1H21 REVENUE GROWTH OF 27.6% Tanmiah Food Company, a market leading provider of fresh and processed poultry and other meat products, animal feed and health products, announced its results for the first half and second quarter ended 30 June 2021, reporting revenues of SAR 734.9 million for the first half, and second quarter revenues of SAR 366.5 million. Gross profit value in first half 2021 rose by 20.2% year-on-year to SAR 167.5 million, while net income was SAR 22.2 million, with a decrease of 16.2% attributable mainly to an increase in the global grain prices. Fresh Poultry sales, the largest contributor to the Company’s revenues grew by 23% to SAR 510.6million in 1H21 on y-o-y basis. The growth was a result of continued increase in capacity and volumes in line with growing

popularity of Tanmiah’s products. Capitalizing on its proven operational excellence, growing consumer preference for locally produced chicken and Saudi government support Tanmiah intends to grow its fresh chicken business in line with the Saudi government’s strategic goal of attaining 80% self-sufficiency in the poultry sector. The Company has increased its local sales of fresh chicken by 23% over the past three years from 66.3 million chickens in 2018 to 81.5 million in 2020 and up to June 2021, the Company has sold 49.2 million chickens so far as a result of reinvestment in its assets and operations. The Company plans to further expand its capacity to serve growing local and regional demand. Planned capital expenditure in the next 5 years to increase feed milling,

primary processing and further processing capacities is intended to allow the Company to capture new and emerging growth opportunities. As the shrimp production is globally an increasing sector, we recently tested our natural betaine product also in shrimp, more exactly in whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). Two subsequent feeding studies with whiteleg shrimp were initiated by Dr. Wolfgang Koppe with astonishing results. One trial was performed in Iceland and the second one in Thailand. In both trials Actibeet ® increased the growth

performance significantly in a dose-dependent manner, at higher percentage in large shrimp and at lower in small shrimp, improved the feed efficiency significantly, showing 20% better FCR and increased the survival rate by 16%. Furthermore, histological examination of the intestine showed the development of better absorptive capacity and reduced the total count of Vibrio bacteria, which explains the increased survival rate under non-challenged conditions. In the Hepatopancreas it led to more lipid accumulating cells, which indicates a positive energy status. These effects are unexpected and further work is initiated. Betaine has proven to act as a real multifunctional nutrient in different ways in different livestock species, and every usage guarantees a beneficial effect.

Finnish startup Volare raises EUR 0.7 million from Maki.VC to radically reduce environmental burden of food chain with high-quality insect proteins

I

nsect proteins can significantly reduce the environmental load of animal feed, pet food and cosmetics industries. A new spinoff startup from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Volare, aims to do just this. Volare uses food production side streams, such as non-edible parts of grains, to produce high-quality proteins and oils in order to replace other animal proteins, soy and palm oil. To start off, the company received EUR 0.7 million in funding from Maki.vc. It is the largest investment to a company in the insect sector in Finland. VTT invests technology into the company. “Our goal is to radically reduce the environmental load of the food chain. A positive impact

can be achieved on an industrial scale. Our production makes use of upcycling, which is circular economy at its purest. The value of the upcycled material grows without any waste,” says Volare co-founder, CTO Matti Tähtinen. Resource scarcity is challenging

Insect proteins are an ecological alternative as a raw material. In commercial fish feed, they can replace materials, such as soy protein, a source of significant adverse environmental impacts. In pet food, insect proteins can replace animal proteins that require excessive amounts of water, land and energy to manufacture. The Volare team has developed a unique method at VTT of producing high-quality proteins and oils from the side streams of the food industry, such as non-edible parts of grains. The method is used to efficiently grow black soldier flies on a commercial scale. The technological solution includes growing the insects and processing them into an industry-compatible end product. The environmental load caused by this production is negligible compared to traditional alternatives. co-founder, CEO Tuure Parviainen. Commercial-scale plant construction is scheduled to start in 2023 Volare’s solution has attracted interest among commercial fish feed and pet food manufacturers. The company already has a pilot plant up and running and is aiming for rapid growth. The company’s goal is to start the construction of a commercial scale production plant in 2023 and to subsequently build several plants in Europe every year. For example, one commercial establishment can feed 4.75 million salmon per year. “Fish feed is produced in enormous plants, and matching one customer’s production volume requires significant investments. We are now starting to establish these partnerships,” says Volare

Maki.vc as an equity investor The groundwork for commercialising Volare technology was done at VTT LaunchPad business incubator where they received support for setting up a team and clarifying their vision. Tributyrin feed additives

B

utyric acid is an important short chain fatty acid that has antimicrobial activity and is now being widely used as feed additives to control pathogens. Butyric acid is produced within the animal intestinal lumen by bacterial fermentation of undigested dietary carbohydrates and endogenous proteins. 90% of this butyric acid is metabolized by cecal epithelial cells or colonocytes to provide multiple beneficial effects on gut health. However, free butyric acid has an offensive odour and is difficulty to handle in practice. In addition, free butyric acids has been shown to be largely absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, resulting in the majority not reaching the large intestine, where butyric acid would exert its major function. Therefore, commercial sodium salt butyrate has been developed to ease the handling and prevent the release of butyric acid in the upper gastro-intestinal tract. But tributyrin consists of butyric acid and mono-butyrin and in the upper gastro-intestinal

tract, tributyrin is hydrolzed into butyric acid and α-monobutyrin but in the hindgut, the major molecule will be α-monobutyrin which provides more energy, to boost muscle growth and to promote capillary development for better nutrients transportation. There are a number of disorders associated with the gut health of chickens including: • diarrhoea • malabsorption syndrome • coccidiosis • necrotic enteritis The addition of tributyrin has been widely used to combat gut disorders, and ultimately enhance chicken gut health. In layer chicken hens, it is able to improve calcium absorption

A recent trial done by Novus International Inc. at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Spain shows that a strategy with reduced levels of organic source of trace minerals in replacement of inorganic sources helps mitigate meat defaults and foot pad lesions while maintaining heavy broilers growth and feed efficiency.

those of genetics with high speed of growth, can be affected by several issues regarding meat and carcass quality. The meat and carcass quality issues can occur at all stages of the bird life and

have consequences at farm level (foot pad dermatitis) or slaughterhouse level (carcass and breast meat yield, skin integrity, broken bones, bruises), and till the transformation. Some of these meat quality issues can significantly

impact the appearance of the meat, and while these meat quality issues do not pose any known risks to the food safety for consumers, they significantly impact producer profitability. Severe cases can result in poultry meat of lower quality, leading to additional processing costs, products downgrading and potential meat condemnations. Modern myopathies, that particularly affects breast meat quality such as wooden breast, spaghetti meat, and white striping are the main issues identified today (see figure 1). These defaults are now well described, and the causes are also better identified, although the etiology remains complex. These myopathies are more frequent and severe for heavier birds with rapid growth. The most probable hypothesis is that broilers with higher rate of hypertrophic muscle growth, result in increased metabolic and circulatory demands leading to increased risk of accumulation of metabolic waste products, such as oxygen free radicals. The oxidative stress increases, and the accumulated highly reactive free radicals can damage DNA, RNA, proteins and lipids present in muscle cells, causing inflammation, metabolic disturbances, and eventually degeneration of the muscle fiber. Strategies to support muscle growth One strategy to mitigate these pains is to reduce growth rate. In this strategy, dietary restrictions, nutrient density or lysine reduction have been studied with variable successes. But by compromising the performance, this strategy is

often not compatible with the goal of producing affordable meat for an increasing demand. A more intensive method is often selected to produce meat with highly efficient birds. Other strategies such as antioxidant approaches, with exogenous antioxidants, or endogenous antioxidant support through highly bioavailable trace minerals such as zinc, copper, manganese and selenium were also tested with success. After having analyzed several studies (Kuttappan & al., 2021), conducted in both research and commercial facilities, Novus’s two-way nutritional strategy was developed: 1) support healthy muscle growth and development and 2) reduce oxidative stress in the tissue. Due to the biological processes involved in muscle tissue growth and oxidative stress in broilers, trace minerals have been identified for their proven positive effects on bodyweight and growth rates. Several studies indicated that highly bioavailable trace minerals such as MINTREX® could help reduce damages to broiler breast tissue due to stress or other causes up to 50%. These Organic Trace Mineral (OTM) also help in the regeneration process if damage occurs. It was then hypothesized that the same trace minerals that support healthy muscle growth could help reduce the development of abnormal tissue.

Figures 1, 2, 3: • Woody breast, named for its hard or “wooden” appearance, is the most severe and troublesome myopathy as it significantly impacts meat texture and taste, therefore impacting consumer acceptance. • White striping is another type of myopathy where connective tissue creates white “stripes” of variable thickness across the breast muscle, but this still affects meat quality. • Spaghetti meat, or destructured meat, is an emerging muscular abnormality that affects the integrity of the muscle and offers a stringy, soft consistency because of the poor cohesion of the muscular fibers. The industry has developed a rating system in which each abnormality is scored based on severity from 0 (no indication of myopathy) to 2 or 3 (severe).

What are MINTREX® organic trace minerals? These organic trace minerals include two chemically differentiated HMTBa molecules (methionine precursor) as ligands bound to the mineral. The strong bounds and

protection brought by the two HMTBa molecules to the mineral allow it to reach the proper absorption site in the small intestine, providing better utilization of the mineral by the animal. This means birds are better equipped with the

nutritional tools for optimal muscle growth. Recent data shows the effect of bis-chelated organic trace minerals In a recent trial done at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Novus tested a strategy of replacement of inorganic source of trace minerals (Zn, Cu and Mn) by a reduced level of MINTREX® highly bioavailable organic source of trace minerals on performance and quality parameters of Ross 308 broilers at 45 days of age. 324 one-day-old Ross 308 male broilers were divided in 2 groups (9 pens, 18 animals per pen) and reared for 45 days. There was a thinning of 4 birds per pen at day 28. Animals were fed iso nutritional diets following FEDNA recommendations with feeds mainly composed of Wheat/ Soybean meal, Iso Methionine. The only differences between

diets were the source and the level of minerals (table 1). After 45 days, animals were slaughtered, and carcass quality was assessed. Foot Pad Dermatitis & Hook burns were scored on 240 legs by treatment using a 3 scores scale (0 normal to 2 severe) and breast quality was evaluated on 120 fillets by treatment for White Striping. With less Zn and Mn and equal Cu from organic sources, between 1 and 45 days, animals performed numerically better on ADG (+1.5 g/d), Live Weight (+65 g) and FCR (-0.013 kg/kg). Concerning carcass and meat quality, there was a significant (P <0.01) reduction of the incidence of food pad lesions (12.9% severe FPD with MINTREX® vs 24.9% for the inorganic trace minerals source) and hock burns (15.9% severe lesions with MINTREX ® vs 23.7% for the inorganic trace minerals source), that leads

to an indication of a better welfare for the animals and better valorization of the legs. White Striping incidence was significantly lower (P <0.01) by 2.2 pts (9.6% vs 11.8% of severe defaults for MINTREX ® and inorganic trace minerals source, respectively). In the context of increased demand for affordable meat, the poultry industry is well positioned to offer affordable products easy to prepare and having high nutritional value, if it can cope with metabolic challenges caused by modern broiler production intensification. Recent Novus’s works (*) confirm that the use of highly bioavailable trace elements helps mitigate meat and carcass defects while maintaining the performance of the animals. Automated detection of upside down eggs

O

ver the last 2 decades, the shape of broiler breeder hatching eggs has changed significantly, becoming rounder or with both ends becoming symmetrical. Current automatic farm packing and processing equipment relies on the nonsymmetrical shape of the eggs to identify the large end and to fill up incubation trays with the small side down. As a consequence, they would not be able to position properly eggs that are too round and/or eggs with a symmetrical shape. Therefore the level of upsidedown eggs have been rising through time mostly with broilerbreeder hatching eggs, often reaching 0,5% to 3% or sometimes more. In addition, using a farm packer inside the hatchery increases manipulation of all the eggs in a tray. Removing and rolling tens of thousands eggs on the same belt would necessarily generate cracks and increase shell contamination. Add to this, the direct consequence of setting a small percentage of the eggs upside down leads to a corresponding loss of hatchability.

As shown in NECTRA internal tests on 500 eggs set upside down, 30% of them would either not hatch (mid and late dead) and 70% of those that manage to hatch, would be late, or would give lower (weak) day old chicks, compared to eggs set properly. In addition, if the eggs have to undergo Inovo vaccination at 18 days, the needle would go through the body of the embryo and kill it. NECTRA has developed a technology that strictly focuses on the actual detection of the air chamber itself instead of using the egg shape to ‘’guess‘’ where the air chamber may be. It is called the Air Chamber Upside down Detection « ACUD ». Therefore, regardless of the shape of the eggs, NECTRA’s ACUD device will identify the air chamber of the eggs, without error, then identify those that have the air chamber pointed down and the eggs and automatically remove or reposition them within the tray. Another very important point is that this technology does not require any contact with the eggs, which is a strong advantage to prevent air cracks and contamination.

NECTRA technology is based on the difference of inertia (or Inertness) between liquid and air. The response is so specific that it is possible to map the air chamber through the shell, without touching or picking the eggs off the tray. ACUD technology comes with several options from simple detection to avoid inovo injection, as well as automated removal and automated repositioning within the tray, during candling and processing at the hatchery. The economic advantaged are important and may help improve hatchability and chick quality. In conclusion, NECTRA automated equipment such as ACUD provides a new way to ensure upside down eggs are not missed and further improve hatchability by a small percentage when you thought you could no longer make progress. The cut-off medallions, strips or cubes, together with trim, land safely on the second, lower internal conveyor belt. This lower outfeed belt will take these portions to another process, so that they can end up in QSR whole muscle chicken wraps, chicken salads or ‘crispy tenders’.

A meticulous job The super-fast opening and closing belts do a reliable, meticulous sorting job, in close cooperation with the cutting knife which has an accuracy of 5 grams. EGGoist Nests for Laying Hens

E

GGoist concept is a multilevel facility with the common life support and climate control systems. Each poultry house level represents the enclosed space, where the chickens may move freely, are supplied with sufficient feed and water and may lay eggs in the comfortable nests. This technology complies with the modern agricultural livestock and poultry welfare requirements. Laying hen nests simulate the natural shaded shelters, where the birds are feeling comfortable enough to lay eggs peacefully. Multi-Tier Nest Depending on the flock type, the nests for laying hens are installed in one or several tiers. Nests for breeder flock are arranged in one tier due to the higher breeder hen body weight and less poultry loading density. For laying hens, two-tier nests are usually used in order to provide sufficient access to nests for egg laying for all hens. The nests feature inclined bottoms, by which the egg rolls to the egg collection belt beyond the

hens’ reach. Thus, the eggs are protected from pecking by hens and contact with other poultry house elements, which ensures clean and undamaged product. The bottoms are covered with artificial glass, simulating the natural bedding conditions. Automated Nest Closing Mechanisms Laying hen nests are closed with mesh shutters, which are normally opened twice a day. There are two available nest options different in their closing mechanism: the nests with lowered partitions and the nests with lifted bottom. In the first case, the metal mesh is slowly turning, so the bird may leave the nest freely. The process takes around 15 minutes, so the hen does not suffer any stress. The second option is based on the slow movement of the bottom with artificial glass. This process also takes up to 15 minutes. The inclined

bottom feels uncomfortable for a hen, so it leaves the nest unassisted. EGGoist Egg Collection System The laying hen nests are equipped with the EGGoist egg-collection system. Perforated egg-collection belt runs across the entire nest tier length. The two-tier nests are equipped with 2 egg collection belts accordingly. From the egg collection belt, the eggs arrive at the fingertype elevator for handling between the levels. Then, all the eggs are collected at the rod conveyor and carried to the next egg processing stage: grading table, egg detector, packing machine or other machinery units depending on the plant configuration. The eggs also may be carried to other facilities, such as incubator stations, through the network of conveyors. Use of corners and swindle-type elements in the rod conveyor design make such egg handling systems equally suitable for any poultry plant regardless of the facility configuration and arrangement. Fortica® has also integrated new overview screens that give an attractive graphic display of the room temperature for each zone.

When Do Chickens Start Laying Eggs? F inding the first egg from a group of new pullets is one of the most exciting parts of raising chickens for eggs. Whether this is your first flock or your 100th flock, finding that first egg is so exciting EVERY SINGLE TIME! Trust me, it never gets old and I am always so proud of my girls every time I find that first BEAUTIFUL egg.

What age do new chickens start laying eggs? While we eagerly watch for the first egg, it’s important to know that the age in which a newlymatured hen will lay can vary greatly based on their breed. Some hens will begin laying eggs as early as 4 months of age while others may not reach

maturity (i.e., laying eggs) until closer to 6 or 8 months of age. Many types of chickens are prolific layers and have a strong genetic predisposition to maturing early. Under ideal conditions, you can anticipate your first egg from these breeds as early as 4 months. Examples of early-maturing layers include, but are not limited to, Single Comb White Leghorns, New Hampshires, Red Island Reds, and many of our egg-type hybrids (ISA Browns, Red Sex Links, Golden Comets, etc.). However, don’t be alarmed if your new girls aren’t laying at 4 months. Many of our slowergrowing breeds and most of our colorful-egg laying types, won’t reach maturity until 5

to 6 months of age. Examples of these layers include, but are not limited to, Polish, Buff Orpingtons, Olive Eggers, and Ameraucanas.

What to feed chickens to lay eggs There is a wide range in which you can anticipate your first egg. Switch to 60% less plastic for more silage, better silage

S

ilostop announces a new way of covering silage that reduces plastic usage by 60%, reduces Dry Matter loss, increases aerobic stability, and makes your farm more sustainable. It is generally accepted that reducing plastic usage on farms is a great goal. One area often overlooked is the silo; newer Oxygen Barrier Films can reduce traditional plastic usage by over 60% while generating more and better silage. Traditionally a producer uses one 120-micron black plastic sheet over top a 40- micron underlay film. Both are single-use plastics, making a minimum of 160 micron of plastic used annually. entails more labour. And the worst part is that often, farmers will still have to toss inches of spoilage before feeding their silage out. There is a better way. In the last decade, true Oxygen Barrier Films were developed. Using only one 45-micron plastic sheet and a composition which prevents oxygen ingress, these films keep oxygen out of the silage. They maintain the forage in much better condition than the traditional cling film and black sheet combination, whilst also decreasing dry matter losses and spoilage. This technology reduces total plastic usage by 60% annually. SENSOSAFE: Innovative sensor technology for protecting animals S ENSOSAFE is an automated, sensorbased assistance system developed by PÖTTINGER that detects wildlife during mowing. The intelligent system prevents animals from being caught by mowers and as a result ensures the best quality clean forage. The concept idea was awarded the Silver Innovation Award at Agritechnica back in 2017.

For the protection of wildlife At the start of the grassland season, the focus returns to reducing the risk to wildlife. The fawning season of roe deer and other wild animals coincides with the timing of the first cut in grassland farming. Due to their natural reflex to seek cover, the young animals do not run away as the danger of a mower approaches. This natural instinct makes it particularly difficult to spot fawns, hares and pheasants cowering in

a well developed crop. As a result, the animals can be seriously injured or even killed. Depending on the data source, this impacts between 100 thousand and 200 thousand animals in Germany, and 25 thousand in Austria per year.

For the protection of livestock If the carcass of a wild animal ends up in the clamp, it will decompose and contaminate the forage. Silage contaminated in this way can expose cattle, sheep, horses and poultry to life-threatening botulism. SENSOSAFE provides the answer. How does it work? The unique technology developed by PÖTTINGER differs fundamentally from the numerous methods used to protect fawns and other wildlife. A sensor bar is mounted directly on the front mower or

as a standalone system. It scans the area in front of the mower during the mowing process. LED lights are integrated into each sensor so that light is reflected by the crop back to the sensor. The colour of an animal's fur or feathers reflects light at a different intensity than plants. The sensors detect this and send an electrical signal to the control unit in the tractor cab. SENSOSAFE is operated using the SELECT CONTROL terminal. If it detects an animal, the control terminal signals a visual and acoustic alarm to the driver. This provides plenty of time to stop the tractor or raise the mower. When SENSOSAFE is mounted on the front mower, the mower's hydraulic system automatically raises the mower deck in an instant. The reaction time of the sensors is 0.04 seconds and the mower is raised in 0.3 - 0.5 seconds. Speeds of approx. 10 kph are realistically possible. The sensor

bar folds into a compact and safe storage position during transport. SENSOSAFE 300 was developed for mowers up to approx. 3 metres wide and can be used on rear mowers as well as front mowers. SENSOSAFE

1000 is designed for mower combinations between 8 and 10 metres wide. The system can be used on PÖTTINGER mowers and mower combinations as well as other brands of mower. Clean forage promotes the health and yield of livestock, contributing to the economic success of the farm business. This system is unique worldwide and is available for immediate use. is more effective than a drone with a thermal imaging camera because it is temperatureindependent and works at any time of day and in any weather. Feedback from the field about this unique system "Easy to use and very reliable in detecting animals" is the result of the tests carried out on the INNOVATION FARM pilot farms in Wieselburg (AUT) in spring 2020. The Bavarian Institute for Agriculture (GER) gives the system its approval: "SENOSAFE can be used over 24 hours." WHY SHOULD WE AVOID HEAT STRESS D uring the hot summer days, calves can suffer from heat stress. This can present long-term challenges through all growth stages of life, starting from birth. This article dives into why preventing heat stress is so important and strategies that can help minimize and manage heat stress.

Pre-Partum Maximizing the genetic potential of your future herd begins before birth. Research has shown that heat stress decelerates the rapid weight gain of the fetus during the dry period and can result in a lower birth weight (Laporta, J., et al. 2020). Lighter calves also often have lower vitality. Post-Partum The first 24 hours of life are vital to the health and development of the calf. Heat stress during the first few days of life can affect future heifer growth due to a lower efficiency of nutrient absorption. For example, calves that are heat

stressed will not absorb all the immunoglobulins from colostrum to their fullest potential. As a result, these calves are presented with challenges from day one that they cannot recover from.

Future Heifer Growth Heifers under heat stress will consume less feed while their energy requirements are increasing by 20 to 30 percent. This 20-30% increase is accounting for additional energy required to cool the body down, similar to additional energy requirements in the winter to keep the calf warm. Without sufficient feed intake to provide the heifer with adequate calories to meet her energetic demands, growth of the heifer is stunted. The energy that is consumed through the feed is utilized for maintenance first, any additional calories will be utilized towards growth. Water absorption Calves under heat stress pant and sweat more. To compensate for this loss of moisture and

prevent dehydration, fresh, cool water should always be available. To maintain hydration, healthy calves under heat stress should aim to drink between 1-4 gallons of water per day in addition to their milk feedings. Sick calves with diarrhea should drink up to 5 gallons of water for optimal body hydration. A fluid imbalance can suppress the calf’s immune system.
