INTERNATIONAL DAIRY FARM DEVELOPMENT (IDFD) CONFERENCE 2020 International Dairy Farm Development (IDFD) was established by Ted and Donald Gribble in 2015. It is a group of dairy experts focused on aiding “new to the industry” dairy owners initiate their dairy farm project. The reason for creating IDFD came about after observing an increasing number of General Businessmen, Processors and others with very little dairy cattle experience desiring to develop new Dairy Farms. IDFD can help navigate this startup process to help mitigate risks. The goal of the IDFD group is

to deliver a council specifically for these types of situations, so that such businesses or individuals can be located and help them to get started in the right direction before they get too far along in the process. The group of “partners” work together each year to provide critical services to develop new dairy farms on numerous projects. In addition, IDFD holds yearly conferences, with presentations centered on preventing the common pitfalls that have been repeated numerous times with these new start-up dairies around the world. At its core, the IDFD

FEED FOR ADAPTIVE CAPACITY TO BOOST RESILIENCE IN CHICKEN

EUROFINS TO ESTABLISH A DEDICATED STATEOF-THE-ART ANIMAL HEALTH TESTING SERVICES LABORATORY IN INDIANAPOLIS

Anco FIT Poultry is the first gut agility activator designed for poultry diets and is now available in more than 30 countries across the globe, including US, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Guatemala, Columbia, Egypt, Germany and Spain. The gut agility concept of Anco FIT Poultry increases the ability to adapt to nutritional and environmental stressors more efficiently. As a result, birds are more resilient and the impact on performance of stressors they are exposed to in a commercial environment is reduced. Poultry producers are applying Anco FIT Poultry to chicken feed to stay competitive when reducing the use of antibiotic growth promotors and increase consistency and persistency in high performing birds. Field trials evaluating Anco FIT Poultry consistently revealed improved laying persistence post peak lay. This means that the egg production in hens fed Anco FIT Poultry had higher egg production for a longer period post peak lay than control animals. This is of considerable value to egg producers trying to maintain egg production over longer laying cycles to reduce the overall cost of egg production and impact on the environment in a sustainable way. Field data in a broiler parent stock also demonstrated improved hatchability in birds fed Anco FIT Poultry.

Eurofins is pleased to announce the launch of a dedicated business unit and the plans for a new state-of-the-art laboratory solely designed for testing services to support animal health companies from early product development through late-stage registration and marketed product support. Eurofins Animal Health provides a wide variety

NUWEN ENHANCES THE PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY OF THE EGGS FROM LAYING HENS THANKS TO CALSEAGROW In March 2020, Nuwen will launch its latest innovation for the VIV MEA show: CalseaGrow for laying hens. The third product in the CalseaGrow range, this nutritional specialty is the combination of natural plant and algae extracts. It is a rich source of antioxidants and prebiotics and, when used as a preventive measure, CalseaGrow for laying hens improves intestinal transit, increases zootechnical performance and enhances the quality of the eggs. CalseaGrow for laying hens is

a combination of algae and plant extracts. Nuwen has notably selected extracts of citrus fruits rich in Pectic Oligosaccharides (POS). These POS are prebiotics with a dual action on intestinal microbiota. First; they inhibit adherence and hence proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. Secondly, POS also have a bifidogenic action, stimulating the growth of good bacteria, Lactobacillus and Bifidodobacteria in particular. Thanks to this, we observe an improvement in intestinal transit and the hen’s

general state of health. The citrus fruits used in CalseaGrow for laying hens also boast a multitude of antioxidants, most notably hesperidin and eriocitrin. CalseaGrow enables the hen to create reserves of antioxidants, which help maintain redox balance and reduce oxidative stress. By reducing said oxidative stress we avoid deterioration in the quality of the eggs, problems with embryonic development and loss of performance.

COBB LEADS DISCUSSION TO ADVANCE POULTRY WELFARE AWARENESS AND EXCELLENCE Cobb-Vantress, Inc. recently hosted a diverse group of animal welfare experts at its global headquarters in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, to discuss the advancement of flock health and well-being. The roundtable group - which consisted of poultry science experts from academia, animal welfare officers from global poultry companies, and Cobb leaders - focused on advancing poultry welfare awareness and excellence while balancing flock management goals and sustainable production standards in a rapidly changing world. Participants were asked to reflect and share their perspectives on four key topics: improvements in outcome-based welfare auditing methods, future trends in breed traits and genetics, innovative solutions for employee training, and practical ideas to improve welfare

outcomes and daily management of broiler and breeder flocks. Dr. Kate Barger-Weathers, director of world animal welfare at Cobb-Vantress, organized the annual welfare meeting and led a discussion about the importance of developing and implementing a comprehensive animal welfare program. She highlighted the company’s program, known as CobbCares™, and the clear standards and expectations for animal handling and care that have been implemented at Cobb’s farms and hatcheries to ensure the health and well-being of the birds at each stage of development. She also reviewed the company’s extensive animal welfare training that is required for all Cobb team members - from onboarding and hands-on training for new team

members, to monthly awareness training for all staff and farmers who work with live poultry, to the customized annual training modules that focus on welfare expectations and a practical application of the Five Freedoms. The roundtable meeting concluded with a robust discussion about additional areas that must be considered so supply chain decisions for animal welfare and sustainability are made in a comprehensive and holistic manner.

VAL-CO® INTRODUCES THE VERSATILE V-FAN™

Some people think that providing good food and clean water is all that’s needed to grow healthy livestock, when actually proper ventilation plays just as vital a role. So, VAL-CO has stepped up to help achieve the ideal environment with the introduction of the versatile, highly efficient, variable speed V-Fan. Older-style Triac-induced variable speed fans would get less efficient the slower they ran due to regulating the voltage, thereby making the CFM/ Watt (or (m3/hour)/W) worse. The V-Fan motor is not only VFD-driven, meaning the frequency (hertz) to the motor is driven, but it’s also a PMAC motor, yielding greater efficiency than induction VFD-driven motors. The V-Fan delivers up to 35,000 CFM at top speeds and provides up to 56.4 CFM/Watt at low speeds, which is where this fan really shines! The V-Fan is direct drive, meaning there are no belts to maintain or bearings to grease. The VFD is located directly on the fan and pre-tuned at the factory, so no adjustments are needed, and is IP66 rated to withstand the environments of agricultural production houses. “I think this fan is going to really help save energy in a lot of houses, as well as potentially eliminate the need for smaller size fans for minimum ventilation.” – Sean F. - Director of Customer Support.

salts are highly oxidative (e.g. CuSO4, ZnSO4) causing negative effects to many nutrients in the formulation like vitamins, essential fatty acids, enzymes etc. In addition, these inorganic salts in nature are having antagonistic effects on each other causing inefficiency in utilization. In return a significant amount of unabsorbed trace minerals is passed out to the environment.

rmance livestock and poultry diets Quality organic source is the solution: To solve these challenges in using traditional inorganic sources, organic trace minerals have been developed by various industrial players in the past few decades. More and more feed millers or integrators are adapting to use more effective organic trace minerals to further improve their feed quality and animal performance while reducing environmental emission. Organic trace minerals like CaliMet series are hydroxy methionine chelated minerals that are efficient, safe and environmentally friendly. Recent studies by XJ bio research center show that lower levels of trace mineral supplementation from organic source can replace high level of traditional inorganic source with equal or better performance. Summary: When appropriate safe, effective organic trace minerals are used to replace inorganic source, feed quality can be improved providing better animal performance and less emission to the environment.

Broiler performance (day 1-42) comparing trace minerals from inorganic vs organic form

Table 1. Shows that when effective organic source of trace minerals are used, 40% (by element content ppm) is sufficient to provide the same performance than diet with traditional high- level inorganic supplementation. Higher supplementation of organic source does not further improve performance as birds’ maximum performance level had been fulfilled at lower dose.

Effects of Zn sources and levels of Zn in the form of MHA-Zn on laying performance in late laying hens (400 days of age) for 42 days experiment

Table 2. Shows that layers’ performance at later stage of laying cycle can be improved by using Hydroxy Methionine chelated Zn (MHA-Zn) replacing ZnSO4. Laying group consuming diet with 40mg/kg is performing as good as group on diet with inorganic ZnSO4 (70mg/kg). Higher supplementation rate of MHA-Zn (80mg/kg) provide significant better performance on laying rate, egg weight, and FCR (4% numerically) compared to group on diet with inorganic Zn.

20 MANURE MANAGEMENT

Mavitec presents new way of solving manure issues

M

avitec Environmental presents an innovative gasification system that converts various kinds of manure into green energy and high value EcoChar: a new way of solving manure issues! Gasification is an environmental technology that offers a lot of advantages such as volume reduction up to 85%, renewable energy, reduction of

LIVESTOCK & POULTRY ME

CO2 and high valuable EcoChar, an amazing product that can be used as soil improver. Gasification is a chemical reaction caused by heating material (manure) in an oxygenstarved environment. The result of this process is a hot air stream of about 1000°C. The produced energy can be (re)used for various purposes such as steam,

hot water, hot air and electricity. Besides heat the gasifier produces EcoChar, a very valuable byproduct of the gasification process. EcoChar still contains the mineral ash and fixed carbon, which offers great environmental advantages and economic value. EcoChar has a lot of unique properties: it’s carbon-rich, dry and free from pathogens, it can

22 CRACK DETECTION

Next step: hygienic program with Artificial Intelligence Moba is proud to announce two innovations in the field of crack detection. As hygiene is becoming more important, Moba takes the next step in its hygienic program with the development of a far-reaching new vision crack detection system using Artificial Intelligence. The existing Crack Detector and Shell Strength Detector will become standard features in Moba’s Shell Inspector.

M

Paul de Schouwer, Commercial Director of Moba

LIVESTOCK & POULTRY ME

oba is committed to adding new and valuable functions to its existing portfolio. For markets where optimizing flock efficiency is key, the monitoring and efficient handling of different shell qualities can have a surprisingly positive result for the business. The shell strength detection function is such a valuable addition. Moba launched this function to detect the shell strength of every individual egg about a year ago. This innovation is based on acoustic analysis and enables our customers to do two things: 1. Monitor flocks based on average shell quality and uniformity within a supply of eggs 2. Grade eggs based on shell quality. This means that from a flock of relatively low quality, the stronger shells (which still often represent 80–90% of the eggs) go to retail products, while only the worst are downgraded to an industrial product.

JANUARY - MARCH 2020

CRACK DETECTION 23

After testing this function at various test sites, it has been proven to work and will become a standard feature of Moba’s crack detection function. This means that from August 2020, all Omnia machines that are equipped with a crack detector will also offer shell strength detection as an additional standard feature. The functionality is also supported by iMoba so that overviews of flocks can be generated easily. Moba’s next step in its hygienic program: vision crack detection using Artificial Intelligence In recent history, salmonella contamination triggered a rapid change of perspective on hygiene in the North American egg market. Cooperation between research institutes, branch organizations and the USDA led to new guidelines on product handling. In this light Moba, launched a hygienic program last year. The very important first step was the Multi Outlet concept, a way to separate dirty eggs from the production line at the earliest possible stage. The next step occurs a little

JANUARY - MARCH 2020

further downstream where eggs are inspected for cracks. Moba is proud to announce a futuristic development program to incorporate Artificial Intelligence into a vision system for detecting cracks. The rapidly changing technology in this field enables functions that were unthinkable a few years ago. This type of contactless system is the logical next step in Moba’s hygienic program. Moba started this project together with its long-term partner company IHFood from Denmark, a company that has a long and proven reputation in the field of professional vision detection systems. Artificial Intelligence and deeplearning technology have been applied for many years in Moba’s unsurpassed Egg Inspector, used for leaker and dirt detection. This technology has become so mature, that even searching for cracks which are barely visible to the human eye, is within reach. Technology that was already proven by Moba researchers in the labsome years ago is now ready for commercial application. Moba expects commercial units within a year.

Different markets; different requirements Paul de Schouwer, Commercial Director of Moba explains: “The two innovations above are a perfect example of how we try to serve various markets simultaneously. Where most market segments focus on optimizing profits and squeezing the highest possible yield out of the logistical balancing act between supplies and products, other market segments are dealing with unheard hygienic challenges, to such an extent that simplicity prevails over the yield of the operation. In such a situation the new technology using Artificial Intelligence will certainly help with simplifying things.” Paul de Schouwer underlines that Artificial Intelligence is a game-changer. “Many vision-based attempts for crack detection have failed so far. The reason was always an unsustainable balance between low detection rates and high false rejects. Our new technology overcomes this. Artificial Intelligence evolves at an enormous pace, so we are sure that it will be found more and more in our egg graders. And Moba will make sure to be a front runner!!”

EVONIK OFFERS ECOBIOL, A BACILLUS BASED PROBIOTIC U nder the category of healthy nutritional solutions, Evonik offers a group of probiotics to help our customers maintain a sustainable animal production process. In the EMEA, Evonik offers Ecobiol, which is a Bacillus based probiotic. Ecobiol is promoted as an effective alternative for antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) having at least the same animal performance but ensuring food safety. Ecobiol is a unique strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CECT 5940, registered in the EU, which means two important things that Ecobiol bacterial strain is not toxigenic and it does not have any antibiotic resistant genes. As a science-based company, we did a lot of research on Ecobiol in different parts of the world. That helped us to know exactly how Ecobiol works inside the animal and how it adds to the animal performance and the animal protein quality. It can withstand the pelleting temperature up to 90 degrees and GIT stressors like the stomach acidity and bile salts. It is also compatible with other feed additives such as coccidiostats, certain antibiotics and organic acids. Probiotics in general have different modes of action, which make them the best

LIVESTOCK & POULTRY ME

alternatives to replace AGPs. Ecobiol has four identified mechanisms by which it can be differentiated from any other product. It rapidly converted to the vegetative form and starts to propagate inside the intestine. It produces macrolactins and other specific secondary metabolites with a strong inhibitory activity against pathogens. It also produces Lactic acid, which supports the propagation of other beneficial bacteria, enhancing resistance to enteropathogenic bacteria. Most importantly, Ecobiol ÂŽ maintains a balanced gut microflora through a mechanism called quorum quenching. Normally, bacteria communicate

among each other through the production of different molecules, a phenomenon termed quorum sensing (QS). Blocking this communication is the quorum quenching (QQ). Finally, yet importantly, Ecobiol can modulate the immune response of the animal based on the challenge level. That was very clear by monitoring the level of different proinflamatory cytokines like IL-8 and TNF-áź . For the product applications, Ecobiol has different forms where it can be added to the premix, feed or even drinking water.

BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM RECEIVES APPROVAL ® ® FOR ASERVO EQUIHALER , INDUSTRY FIRST THERAPY FOR SEVERE EQUINE ASTHMA

H

orses with severe equine asthma struggle to breath, even at rest. Recently, the European Commission granted marketing authorization to Boehringer Ingelheim for the new Aservo® EquiHaler® - and horses that suffer from severe equine asthma can now benefit from this new therapy. While inhaled therapies for the treatment of asthma are common in human health, the approval of the Aservo® EquiHaler® marks an industry first in equine medicine, as until now, there has been no approved inhalant therapy licensed for use in horses with severe equine asthma. The Aservo® EquiHaler® represents the culmination of over a decade of collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim’s human pharma and animal health R&D groups. The Respimat™ inhaler used in human respiratory disease is differentiated by the unique Soft Mist™ Technology, which was integrated into the new Aservo® EquiHaler®, allowing medication to be inhaled, deep into the lung. “The inhaler is a prime example of leveraging innovation efforts of both our businesses. This has been a strength in the past and we will expand this in the near future to further increase the delivery of innovative solutions for our patients and customers,” shares Eric Haaksma, Head of R&D, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Business Unit.

JANUARY - MARCH 2020

The newly approved inhaler is designed specifically for use in horses. It includes an ergonomic handle and dosing lever for ease of user handling, and a nostril adaptor that fits gently inside the nostril of the horse, allowing them to easily inhale the medicated mist. The active ingredient in the Aservo® EquiHaler® is the prodrug ciclesonide, which is a corticosteroid that is activated directly in the lung, reducing lower airway inflammation associated with severe equine asthma. “Treating severe equine asthma can be challenging for veterinarians and horse owners, who struggle to find safe and effective ways to help horses breath,” says Erich Schoett,

Global Business Head of Equine for the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Business Unit. “Bringing a new, safe and effective treatment to the market is something that we can really be proud of. It is a strong indicator of the commitment that Boehringer Ingelheim has to the health and welfare of horses, and to the investment that we make into continuing to advance therapies through collaboration and innovation.” The Aservo® EquiHaler® is expected to be available for veterinarians in the EU in 2020.

COWS SCRATCHING FOR WELL-BEING

W

e all see cows scratching from time to time on trees, fences or barn walls and structures. This natural behaviour for a cow is part of its ethology and fulfills several functions: eliminating certain parasites or dirt, relaxing muscles, stimulating blood circulation all leading to activity that is satisfactory for her wellbeing. In the pasture, there is no shortage of options. Trees and fence posts, for example, are naturally suitable for rubbing. In the barn, the situation is a bit more complicated: dairymen have installed rotating brushes to prevent cows from scratching

LIVESTOCK & POULTRY ME

on concrete walls as it represents a risk of injury. Unfortunately, the brush does not reach all areas, especially the underside of the neck. Dairy Scratchy meets this need Dairy Scratchy is a rubber attachment that has a total height of 1.50m (59 inches). Studs are located on the upper section (1m or 39 inches) and the lower part (0.50m or 20 inches) is smooth so as not to injure the hocks of the animals. Dairy Scratchy can be installed on walls, posts or corners wherever cows like to scratch. We protect the wall and we look after the animal’s well-

being. The system is passive and economical compared to electrified brushes. The dairyman can therefore multiply the scratch points in the barn allowing many cows to rub at the same time without competition or rivalry. In addition to their well-being, the Dairy Scratchy stimulates blood circulation and contributes to cleanliness. It requires no cleaning or maintenance as the rubber studs do not accumulate filth. The Dairy Scratchy offers essential comfort to the life of cows in stables with a living environment closer to natural conditions. For more information, visit www.bioret-agri.com

CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY

TO IDENTIFY ONE IN A MILLION Accurate measurement of animals, especially body weight and size, is one of the most labor-intensive aspects of collecting data for our breeding programs. Especially for larger animals, weighing and identifying animals can be very time consuming and can compromise animal welfare.

V

ision technology for identifying and measuring animals is an emerging technology that could offer huge benefits in the field of animal breeding and food production in general. Machine vision can automatically visualize patterns and make decisions when sorting data. Many of us use this type of technology, in both direct and indirect ways. Whether opening our smart phone with a fingerprint, or travelling through airport security, machine vision is in action. One of the many applications of vision technology is in agriculture, particularly in animal breeding with the need to analyze and accurately identify animal characteristics as efficiently

LIVESTOCK & POULTRY ME

as possible. We have recently partnered with Plant & Food Research to develop the use of underwater vision technology. This project will focus on the use of this technology for measuring aquaculture breeding stock, using trout as a test case. To accurately select the right animal, geneticists need to track bodyweight and morphometrics (the study of size and shape). In aquaculture, as with many other species, data collection on individual animals is a challenge. Conventional methods, such as weighing scales, are labor intensive and can compromise animal welfare. Underwater vision technology offers a solution to accurately and efficiently identify, measure, and select

breeding stock. Plant & Food Research has developed new image-based processes to measure a range of traits in fish automatically. The high throughput system uses species-specific distinguishing features, such as visual patterning akin to a fingerprint, to identify individuals and track their growth over time. This information can be used to identify individuals with the right characteristics to offer potential as parents in aquaculture breeding programs. The project will assess the viability of this technology in a commercial environment by performing a number of test cases in trout.
