News AGTHIA COMPLETES TRANSACTION WITH AL FOAH TO CREATE TOP 10 F&B COMPANY IN THE REGION Agthia Group PJSC, a leading food and beverages company, announced the successful completion of its strategic combination with Al Foah, the world’s largest date processing and packaging company based in Abu Dhabi.

With the integration of Al Foah into Agthia as a strategic business unit, Agthia has instantly become the domestic market leader in four essential food and beverage categories: water, dates, flour, and animal feed, in addition to having a diversified international exposure within the date category. Al Ain Farms, UAE’s first and largest local dairy brand, has announced the winners of the seven-day local dairy farmers contest, First in Region Bovine Competition, that gathered the representatives from all local farmers and dairy industries competing in a challenge of highest milk production per a cow. The winner of the contest was Al Rawabi Dairy, who clinched the title and a cash prize of AED 20,000. Marmum Dairy took second place, with an AED 19,000 cash prize, and Al Ain Farms took third place and AED18,000. 7 more winners were announced from Al Rawabi Dairy, Zakher Dairy Farm, Al Ain Farms,

Al Dahra Dairy Company and Emirates Dairy Farm who all took the title of the winners of the bovine show, first in region. Other participating farms included MTKMN, Marai Farms and Hilli Farms. As an active supporter and advocate of local dairy farming, Al Ain Farms instituted the event as a platform to bring local farmers and large-scale dairy producers together, who jointly play a key role in providing fresh, healthy, and nutritious produce for residents of the UAE and by their combined efforts play a major role in the food security of the country. The event also emphasizes Al Ain Farms’ commitment to animal welfare, and the exceptional standards of animal care adopted by each participant in and throughout the event, as the cows were hosted by Al Ain Farms veterinary teams and handlers, and were taken care with all needs of food, water, milking and care 24/7 on Al Ain Farms site. The judging of the competition

entries was under the expert guidance of Dr. Roula Shaaban, the first Emirati female veterinarian and counselor for the Middle East and North Africa region of the World Veterinary Association, supported by two more Emirati female veterinarians. CEO of Al Ain Farms Willem van Walt Meijer said; “The event has been a true celebration of local food production scale, showcasing the excellence and integrity of the UAE’s local farming community. AVIAGEN ANADOLU ACHIEVES A FIRST FOR THE TURKISH POULTRY INDUSTRY WITH COMPARTMENT STATUS As a result of excellent biosecurity standards, Aviagen® Anadolu officially obtained compartmentalization status from the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on October 27, 2020. This allows the company to continue to deliver birds to customers all over Turkey and the Middle East and to countries that have formally recognized and accepted compartment status, when an Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak has occurred in other parts of the country. Aviagen Anadolu production facilities were inspected by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry within the scope of the “Directive on the Definition and Declaration of Compartments Free From Mandatory-to-report Avian Influenza” prepared under the “Regulation on Disease-Free Compartmentalization”, as a result of which Aviagen Anadolu received the

compartment certificate approved by the Ministry on October 27, 2020 following the United Kingdom, US and Brazil, thanks to its efforts towards biosecurity. Compartmentalization ensures that a company with compartment status can export from its establishments located in the defined compartments when the Avian Influenza disease occurs in a country or region. Compartmentalization takes a proactive approach to prevent the disease from penetrating into the establishments located in a compartment and guarantees that the necessary high-level biosecurity measures are taken; all activities are recorded and traceable in a transparent manner; and management and production systems are constantly inspected and controlled through internal or Ministry inspections. It is

possible for such companies to prevent not only Avian Influenza, but also other infectious agents from penetrating into their establishments thanks to the highlevel biosecurity measures put in place. The capacity of a company with compartment status to export depends on countries’ bilateral agreements through which they recognize each other’s status. Aviagen Anadolu will continue to successfully represent Turkey in exporting markets with the support of the officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as the public authority, and of sectoral associations and organizations for a sustainable compartment status and its recognition by other countries. This compartment status will also enable sustainable production within the Turkish poultry industry and the continuous supply of high generation stock (Grand Parent and Parent Stock) without any problems, so that consumers can have access to healthy, sustainable and affordable poultry meat. The approval of compartments in various countries through bilateral agreements between public authorities to guarantee the supply of parent stock is strategically important for the Turkish poultry industry in order to continue to meet the domestic demand and to maintain, and further improve if necessary, its strong position in the international arena.

EW NUTRITION ACQUIRES FEED QUALITY AND PIGMENT BUSINESS FROM NOVUS INTERNATIONAL EW Nutrition, a global provider of animal nutrition solutions,

announced that it has acquired the Feed Quality and Pigments business from Novus International, Inc. Under the terms of the agreement, EW Nutrition becomes the owner of world-renowned brands such as Santoquin® feed preservative, SURFACE® feed mill processing aid, and Agrado® feed ingredient. The acquisition also gives EW Nutrition ownership of a state-ofthe-art production facility in Constantí, Spain. "This transaction will bring additional value to our customers, further reinforcing EW Nutrition’s global market position, and increasing its product portfolio and geographical reach,” says Michael Gerrits, Managing Director of EW Nutrition. “The products acquired will further support EW Nutrition’s mission to mitigate the impact of antimicrobial resistance by providing comprehensive animal nutrition solutions." News CROPIN RAISES US$20 MILLION IN SERIES C FUNDING ROUND LED BY ABC WORLD ASIA CropIn, a leading global artificial intelligence and dataled agri-tech organization empowering stakeholders to reimagine agriculture with data, has raised US$20 million in a Series C funding round led by ABC World Asia, an Asiafocused private equity fund dedicated to evidence-based impact investing. Existing investors Chiratae Ventures, Invested Development and Ankur Capital also

participated in this funding round. Other new investors in this round include CDC Group and Kris Gopalakrishnan’s family office Pratithi Investment Trust. THE SUSTAINABLE HUMAN PROJECT: 365 DAYS OF ONLY EATING FOOD SOURCED IN THE SUSTAINABLE CITY, DUBAI A resident of The Sustainable City (TSC), Dubai - the Middle East’s first fully-operational sustainable community, has vowed to sustain himself fully on food sourced exclusively inside the community for a full year. Phil Dunn, a Canadian landscape architect, conceived this project during the time of lockdown restrictions, when issues of food security were brought to the fore. Mr. Dunn was responsible for the design and construction of the urban landscape in The Sustainable City, and he decided to put this landscape to the test over the course of one year to ascertain what it takes to eat produce solely sourced from within his neighbourhood urban environment with support from other residents.

There are several simple rules in place for The Sustainable Human Project: Mr. Dunn will grow fruits and vegetables such as onions, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs in community garden plots. Free-range chickens will provide him with eggs, and he will eat fish from a small fish farm inside one of the community biodomes. The missing elements in the food basket will come from a circular economic philosophy for which Mr. Dunn will repurpose scrap wood from construction into urban farming tools to be used in bartering with residents in exchange for other items such as grains, rice, proteins and oils. When Mr. Dunn travels or is invited out for dinner, he will use the opportunity to spread the word

about the amazing cultural diversity of over 80 different nationalities living in TSC. Mr. Dunn said: “The Sustainable Human Project was conceived as a mixture of a personal challenge and an outward commitment to explore, educate, and engage with the important concepts of food security in the time of a pandemic, and a social sustainability ideal of how growing food together might also "grow" a community. The challenge of 365 days of eating only food grown in The Sustainable City (TSC) was one that I thought was crazy enough to keep me wilfully striving, and just possible enough to perhaps, be completed.” This entire process is monitored by The Chiron Clinic, located in TSC, who completed baseline medical tests before the challenge and will be tracking Mr. Dunn’s health throughout the year at regular intervals to ensure any nutritional issues are identified and addressed.

hen you make the decision to start farming indoors, you’ll have to consider if you want to start a greenhouse or vertical farm. Each of these farming techniques are unique and beneficial in their own ways. Choosing either one will depend on your specific farming needs. In this article we’re going to cover greenhouse farming vs. vertical farming and their differences to help you decide which method is best for you. What is Greenhouse Farming?

Greenhouse farming is done indoors in a well-suited environment with access to direct sunlight. SOLPLAST PREVENTS THE RISK OF HIGH TEMPERATURES ON THE SOIL

O

ne of the most relevant technological innovations of mulch over time has been the multilayer extrusion to develop two-colour films. Surely the most common bicolour within this range is the white/black combination whose white face reflects solar IR radiation while its black face guarantees maximum opacity to control or fight weeds. We performed a comparative experience in a field of strawberries on the coast of Peru which provided very interesting conclusions. Our objective was to measure the soil temperature difference between the ridges covered with White/Black mulch and those covered with Black mulch. The test was conducted between the months of March and June of the year 2018, collecting close to 100,000 soil temperature records which we summarize below:

Analyzing the data above we conclude that the Black mulch is the one that clearly heats the soil the most with a differential of almost +6º C with respect to the White/Black mulch. While the crop withstood peaks of almost 43º C with the Black mulch, the plot

with White/Black mulch did not reach 37º C any day of the 3-month cycle analyzed. But perhaps the most surprising and unexpected test result that we found with this study was a 100% plant mortality with the Black mulch versus 8% with the White/Black mulch,

The choice of color and arrangement of layers of the mulch is a critical choice that can cause a wide range of results on the crops from the most beneficial to the greatest of failures. USING WATER MORE EFFECTIVELY IN AGRICULTURE AND SAVING COSTS AND RESOURCES

W

orldwide, 17 countries currently suffer from extreme freshwater shortages. A quarter of the people are threatened by acute freshwater shortages. This particularly affects agriculture, as it consumes around 70 percent of all freshwater. Due to climate change, with rising global temperatures and simultaneously decreasing rainfall, agriculture is becoming increasingly dependent on artificial irrigation in order to ensure food supplies. This is expensive and can ultimately destroy livelihoods. But why is water so important? And how can humic acids help to conserve the valuable resource water and save costs? Water dynamics or: The soil breathes Water fulfills many functions in the soil. Among other things, it has a direct influence on soil respiration. With the help of water, the soil exchanges air and supplies soil life with oxygen. And this is how it works: The soil contains a pore system comparable to that of a sponge. If the sponge is relatively dry, most pores are filled with air. If water enters these pores due to precipitation or groundwater fluctuations, the air is

displaced and escapes. As soon as the water leaves the porous sponge again, oxygenrich air flows into the pore system. An active soil life promotes a stable pore system In healthy soils, the pore system accounts for about 45 percent. Its stability is mainly ensured by active soil life. Bacteria, fungi, roots and animals excrete slimy exudates that stick the soil particles together and create a stable aggregate structure. If a soil is in such a state, it can fully perform its function as a water reservoir. In addition, the structure and thus the ability of the soil to breathe remains intact even after heavy rainfall. Without soil life there is no pore system and no respiration An active soil life is directly related to soil fertility. However, most of the world's man-made land has been affected by declining fertility for decades. There are many reasons for this, including too few or inactive soil life. This affects the stability of the pore system, which lacks the excretions of microorganisms and fauna the soil absorbs water less and is less able to store it. The consequences for the oxygen

JBT PRoDOSE BRINGS SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY TO POST-HARVEST PROCESS

T

he preparation and application of postharvest treatments and waxes has long been a time-consuming, laborintensive process for fresh citrus producers, and one that typically means workers have to handle large quantities of chemicals. JBT’s new PRoDOSE system has been designed to tackle all of these concerns, bringing an extra dose of safety and efficiency to the post-harvest process.

Time-consuming For producers of primarily fresh citrus, a wax-based food coating is conventionally mixed with one containing fungicide properties, before being pumped through an application system. However, the measurement of the chemicals – and the mixing itself – is typically done by hand, meaning that the whole process can take hours at a time. “It’s very labor-intensive,”

explains JBT California citrus specialist Dana Dillard. “The wax coating has to be measured out by hand and mixed in a 300-500 gallon tank, which can take a person two-three hours, and this process is carried out every day or every other day.” Cost reduction PRoDOSE takes the fullstrength fungicides and meters them into the food grade coating with extreme accuracy through connecting valves and piping; a blending process which can be carried out at a rate of 25-30 gallons at a time, which allows for faster chemical changes based on market trends and decay pressures. “PRoDOSE reduces the safety hazard of blending the chemicals, cuts down the burden of a very laborintensive task, and reduces the overall time needed for the blending process,” says Dillard. AL AIN MUNICIPALITY COLLABORATES WITH MBRSC TO ANALYSE PALM TREE COVER USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE THE COLLABORATION SUPPORTS THE UAE’S EFFORTS TOWARDS AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY

I

n line with the UAE’s efforts to increase agricultural productivity, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) developed AI technology that helped detect 45,000 palm trees, in various regions of Al Ain. The project is within the framework of UAE’s approach to enhance cooperation between

government entities to improve services and develop innovative solutions that are both cost and time saving. MBRSC developed the AI technology to analyse the 10 centimetre-per-pixel resolution images provided by Al Ain Municipality by utilising in-house technology and experts from the Centre’s

Application Development & Analysis Section. Through the AI system, MBRSC was able to detect 45,000 trees in less than a week, with an accuracy of 98.7%. With this technology, MBRSC was able to provide a solution to achieve an acceptable degree of accuracy to identify and extract very small objects using remote

sensing technology, which would otherwise have taken months of work to achieve. It further reflects the spirit of cooperation between government agencies in the country and reinforces the principle of cooperation among them to improve service offerings in the UAE. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE HELPING AFRICAN FARMERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST LOCUSTS

A

free tool that will help farmers and pastoralists across Africa to predict and control locust behaviour has been launched. Kuzi—the Swahili name for the wattled starling, a bird renowned for eating locusts—is an AI-powered tool that generates a real-time heatmap of locusts across Africa, shows all potential migration routes, and gives a real-time locust breeding index. Using satellite data, soil sensor data, ground meteorological observation, and machine learning, Kuzi can predict the breeding, occurrence and migration routes of desert locusts across the horn of African and Eastern African countries, and uses deep learning to identify the formation of locust swarms. Kuzi then sends farmers and pastoralists

free SMS alerts 2-3 months in advance of when locusts are highly likely to attack farms and livestock in their areas. Without preventative measures, a swarm of 80 million locusts can consume food equivalent to that eaten by 35,000 people a day, devastating food stocks for vulnerable communities. Putting in place early detection and control measures, which are critical in desert locust management, will offer farmers and pastoralists a vital tool in the fight against world hunger and food insecurity. Alerts are currently available for Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Uganda, in the regional languages of Kiswahili, Somali and Amharic, spoken by over 200 million people across Eastern Africa. “The first international anti-

locust conference was held in Rome in 1931 and yet Africa continues to experience locust invasions almost 100 years later, with the worst locust invasion in 70 years occurring in 2020, threatening food supplies for millions of people across Eastern Africa. There has to be a better way to do this, one that has the local communities being central in the fight against locusts,” said John Oroko, CEO of Kuzi’s creator, Selina Wamucii. “A new wave of locust upsurge now threatens millions across Eastern and Southern Africa, exacerbating food insecurity for already vulnerable communities, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have a responsibility to develop and deploy locally bred solutions that address these challenges faced by our vulnerable rural communities,” adds Oroko. Poulty rendering One of Mavitec’s specialities is poultry rendering, a process that handles all by-products of the slaughter process. There are different ways of poultry processing and the quality of end-product depends on the raw material composition you put in the system. Van Heumen explains: ‘Basically it means, what you put in you will get out. Poultry by-product processing starts with five possible product flows: feathers, blood, soft by-products (heads, legs, intestines), Doa’s and farm/ hatchery by-products. All products can be processed in valuable end-products with each its specific process. The main objective is to stabilize the products by driving off the moisture, sterilize the product and turn it in a combination from protein (meal) and oil or only a protein. By following the processes described in EU-legistation 1069/2011 guarantees can be given in terms of end-quality and the security to be free from any salmonella, e. coli or clostridium. Each product has its own specific process that can be designed, based on capacity in a batch or continuous process. Volumes above 50 tons raw material per day are mostly processed in continuous systems, while smaller volumes are processed in a batch process. Poultry meat meal has an average protein content varying from 62-68% with a digestibility above 80%. The oil content can be used as feed additive or biofuel industry. Feathers have a protein content varying from 82-88% with a digestibilty above 80%. Blood has a protein content of 93-95% with a digestibilty above 90%. Endproducts from Doa’s, hatchery

t’s hard to imagine a more inhospitable landscape. Beyond the shores of the Gulf in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), parched sand dunes roll across the desert for hundreds of kilometres. It’s no mirage. In fact, three-quarters of the country is covered by desert. Summer temperatures often soar above 40 degrees Celsius, and freshwater is hard to find. This ancient land recalls centuries of history, but these days the country’s dunes are better known for tourist safaris than their agricultural productivity. Fishing or farming in such a harsh environment seems ambitious. But FAO has partnered with the UAE in a joint project to develop and expand the country’s fledgling fish farming industry. The aim is to make aquaculture more energy efficient and economically viable to meet the demands of a growing population and their appetite for fish. “FAO is working with the government to make the UAE a global hub for agricultural

FISHING FOR CHANGE IN THE EMIRATI DESERT technology and innovation,” says Lionel Dabbadie, a Senior Fisheries and Aquaculture Officer at FAO. “Fish farming is a great example of innovation being successfully applied.” Consumer appetites have changed In the Arab Peninsula, Emiratis are among the biggest fish consumers and the orange spotted grouper known as ‘Hamour’ is a local favourite. But as consumer demand has grown, fish stocks have plummeted. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had an impact on consumer expectations and demands for locally produced food. Even though the UAE is a country that needs to import 90 percent of its food requirements, more and more consumers now want to source their food closer to home. So there is enormous potential.

With technical support from FAO, the UAE is investing in modern technologies to build sustainable and profitable aquaculture production that will maintain the country’s fish supply, improve its food security and transform its food system. There has already been incredible progress. “We are at the beginning; we are working with pioneers,” says Dabbadie, who has had almost 30 years’ experience as a scientist and aquaculture expert in countries as diverse as Brazil, Madagascar, Thailand and the Philippines. Innovation and technology for sustainable aquaculture FAO estimates that freshwater availability has decreased by two thirds in the Near East and North Africa in the past 40 years, and it is expected to fall by another 50 percent by 2050. However, experts have found ways to use desert salt water, or brackish water, for fish

Aquaculture farming. Innovations such as integrated aquaculture systems, aquaponics or Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), where water can be recycled or reused, have been developed with a special focus on the unique water scarcity needs of arid countries. Recirculating systems not only conserve precious freshwater, but create ideal conditions for fish, even in harsh desert conditions. At fish farms like the Emirate Fish Farm at Al Wathba, 40 kilometres from the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, staff use the latest computer technology to monitor the temperature and quality, as well as oxygen levels, of the water 24 hours a day. Sensory alerts immediately indicate if there is any variation that could threaten the fish’s survival. Any interruption in the energy supply could be fatal. Grouper, salmon, seabass and caviar Aquaculture is a priority for the UAE government, which has listed it as a key component of its National Food Security Strategy. The strategy includes

initiatives which promote resilient agricultural practices to increase productivity, while helping to maintain ecosystems. The government is committed to enhancing local production with the use of modern technologies and developing international partnerships to diversify food sources. A Marine Innovation Park has been established at the Sheikh Khalifa Marine Research Centre in Umm Al Quwain as part of UAE’s plans to advance their bio-science technology innovation and marine science research. Today, private operators produce 500 -1 000 tonnes of organic Atlantic salmon, grouper, seabass, yellowtail kingfish or caviar at several different facilities throughout the country. Dabbadie says the challenge is to improve the technology and reduce the production costs. “If they can create economies of scale, they could lift production here to 30,000 tonnes by 2030,” says Dabbadie. “If they can do that, then it will become more profitable.” The integration of solar energy production – in which

UAE is a pioneer - with aquaculture and other innovations, such as selective breeding, also has potential to develop the sector, and this is where FAO is playing an active role. In a country working to achieve a carbon-neutral society based on renewal energy, these facilities can provide job opportunities for young people and ensure a steady supply of fish for local consumers into the future. “Technical agriculture requires a high level of technical skill. We need to invest in training the young generation and this is one of the government’s objectives,” says Fatema Al Mulla, Senior Research Analyst at the UAE’s Food and Water Security Office. FAO is committed to transforming agriculture, forestry and fisheries, with the intention of eliminating hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity as part of attaining the Sustainable Development Goals. By developing its blue agrifood system, the UAE has the potential to not only meet the needs of its own society but to share its knowledge and expertise with new generations elsewhere.
