Ob sie aufgrund ihrer Synästhesie (sie assoziiert beispielsweise Nummern mit Farben) den Klang ihres kommendes Albums auch mit dem Geschmack von Obst verbindet, wissen wir nicht. Nur über die Tatsache, dass die ungeduldig erwartete Platte “FROOT” heißt und diesen April erschienen ist, haben wir Gewissheit. Und darüber, dass Marina Diamandis, so Marina and the Diamonds’ echter Name, seit ihren bunten Welt-Hits wie “Primadonna Girl” erwachsen geworden ist. Immerhin feiert sie in diesem Jahr ihren dreißigsten Geburtstag und ist sowohl im Video zum neuen Titeltrack sowie unserem Shoot mit Fotografin Charlotte Rutherford eher Glam-Diva als Bubblegum-Girl. What kind of music did you listen to as a kid?
I listened to the great female baladeers: Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. It gave me a good ear for epic melodies and a desire to be a great vocalist, though I’ll never be as good as any of them.
Your sound has certain 80s references, the music video to “Bitch” looks slightly 90s, anything nostalgic you connect with these decades?

Did you ever have a crush on a pop star?
No. But I did always crush on the pop star lifestyle.
Is there music or a special song that still gives you goosebumps, because it throws you back into a certain phase of your life?
Listening to Dido makes me think of sitting in a carpool.
