MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

The year 2020 was one we will not soon forget. In addition to political turmoil and a spotlight on the prevalence of racial injustice in our country, 2020 brought the COVID-19 pandemic to the MassArt campus, the country and the world. When the students of the Class of 2020 left campus for spring break in early March, we soon came to realize that was to be their last time on campus. In order to keep the community safe, MassArt had to pivot to remote learning for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester and seniors completed their final undergraduate semester from their homes. Finishing their senior year from afar, the members of the Class of 2020 were unable to participate in the traditional end-of-year activities such as thesis shows, senior screenings, portfolio nights and the fashion show. As an alternative to those in-person experiences, the Student Government Association (SGA) decided to use some of their funds to produce a catalog that would provide seniors with an opportunity to showcase their work. The Senior Catalog was open to every member of the Class of 2020 and the seniors whose work is featured in this catalog are those who chose to participate. All of those students received a copy of the catalog from SGA. Through this collaborative project, the members of the Student Government Association expressed their desire to commemorate a class who completed their degrees under the most unusual circumstances, with great resilience and spirit. Laura Flynn Senior Director of Student Engagement and SGA Advisor

While it’s easy to gravitate to all that has been lost for students who graduate in 2020, what our animation students have actually gained due to circumstances beyond all our control will play out in the years to come. This is a group of animators who are resilient, focused, and more adept at problem solving than any past graduating class — not to mention the fact that they had to absolutely dive into the world of working remotely with a cold splash. When I think of what it takes to march forward in the discipline of animation, this group of graduating students has it. Look at their work here. It’s truly memorable. Keep an eye out for what they do in the future. I am certain it will be extraordinary!

Architecture

Hello Seniors, We met two years ago when you were sophomores. It’s been a privilege to teach you and to share in what you have become, on your way to a career as an architect, a most humbling profession. Keep exploring and embracing the many possibilities of seeing and understanding both the technical and human sides of architecture. My favorite project has always been the next one, and someday I hope to inhabit a place in the city that you had a hand in making. Congratulations to you on this signature achievement in your MassArt education in architecture —as an engaged student, responsible citizen, and now valued colleague.

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

Architecture for me has always been a social art— collaborative, cerebral, and creative. This Spring your school was shuttered and your cohort was displaced, at a time in your college career when historically we come together to intensify, critique, and explore your ideas. Each of you rose to the social distance challenge to learn together and embrace the teaching in a new landscape. Together with us you persevered, with successes and mistakes made along the way, and as a group, you worked to build a community while designing wonderfully interesting and habitable places. This happened not through serendipity but through hard work that employed your talents, interests, and individual quirks, in order to bring something unique to your group: beautiful diagrams of living; interlocking places and colorful screens; fine lines and soft drawings; woven walls and crystal clear craft; microscopic models and kits of possible parts; spiritual spaces in light and open bio-diverse systems; and robust materials of movement and descriptive geometries. What lessons will you carry with you as you move forward? What ones will you leave behind? And what experiences will you return to share with us in the near future? No matter what direction this path takes, you will continue to be formed by new experiences and I can only imagine the changes you will make to better our built environment with the strength of your trusted minds and hands.

Art Education

To our Art Ed graduating students: But never forget that education is more than that, as Freire reminds us: education is an act of love. As you graduate at a time when we are experiencing a pandemic, as well as protests against injustices in our society, take to heart Freire’s words yet once more: “Don’t let the fear of what is difficult paralyze you.” Make art. Teach. Bring your knowledge and expertise to our communities, for as Rabbi Hillel asked, “If not now, when? If not me, who?” This is the time for each of you to make a difference as artists and educators. Keep in touch with us. You will always be part of MassArt and MassArt will always be part of you.

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

We’ve spent some years with each of you and, collectively, we’ve gotten to know you. We’ve gotten to see you as teachers, and we’ve gotten to see you as artists. We’ve been with you in your high moments and in your low moments – we’ve seen you in laughter, in frustration, in discovery, and in love. We want you to forge ahead and be the best artists educators you can be — not just for yourselves, but for all the lives you will touch: the lives of little kids, youth, and elders; the lives of learners who struggle economically, who experience racism and prejudice, who have had to forge a new life in this country; learners whose mother tongue is not yours: learners who experience injustice, suffering and trauma. You already know that you will need community in your path ahead— family, friends, lovers, pets. And you will need to have a community of your fellow artists educators who can inspire you, who can be honest with you, and who will care about you. I hope you know that you will always have a community in the Art Ed Department. We will follow your successes, we will be there when you need support and advice. And we look forward to when you will be the mentors for the next generation of artists teachers. As you forge your path ahead, please remember the words from world-renowned Brazilian educator Paulo Freire that “education is political,” so be purposeful of what you teach and why you teach it.

With love, Adriana Katzew, on behalf of the members of the Art Education Department

I join Janna, Tom, and many inspiring visiting faculty members in expressing what a pleasure it has been working with you for four years and witnessing your creation of personally sourced and successful artwork. Yours have been among some of the most unique and meaningful pieces we have experienced. While you have grown and defined yourselves as strong individuals, please know also how much we have appreciated your contributions as community members. We will always remember your assistance with department shows, your leadership in SGA, your earnest support of Clay for Change, and your commitment as teaching assistants. While your final semester could not be completed with the facilities and with the celebratory closure that you deserve, your resourcefulness, creativity, and endurance assure us of your future success.

By any measure, the Communication Design Class of 2020 is remarkable. You faced the challenges of a global pandemic, a catastrophic economy, and social isolation to create a superb body of design work. We are so very proud of you. You showed extraordinary commitment to your practice by continuing to work at a high level throughout the spring. You showed uncommon patience after being torn from campus and the creative community in which you thrived. And you showed exceptional grace after losing the hard-earned rites of your senior year — degree project symposium, final reviews, portfolio night, and commencement. I speak for all faculty when I say it was a joy and an honor to work with every one of you. You have a place in our hearts forever. And we will always be here for you. With love and gratitude, Joe Quackenbush on behalf of the Communication Design faculty

You prepared your portfolios and websites for virtual reviews with industry professionals from near and far. The final push you made was so impressive. This spring semester tested your adaptability and resilience. Maybe a test you would rather not have had, but in many ways it was a final preparation for the world awaiting post graduation. Don’t forget about the “virtual goodie bag” Renee gave to you at our year-end celebration. She packed it full of important things to help you along your journey. Remember, you are always a part of the MassArt family and within that the Fashion Design Department family. Stay connected with us! You will never be forgotten. On the contrary, you will be remembered for the example you have set.

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

Congratulations to the Fashion Design graduates of 2020!! You have MADE it! It’s probably safe to say that the end of your senior year was not as you had ever imagined it would be. In fact, for the entire world nothing was as we had expected. The daily routines we had all followed for so long came to a halt. You left for spring break with anticipation and plans to prepare for the photo shoot, but were not able to return to campus. You were removed from your collective studio and moved back to personal spaces near and far. You learned to adapt in isolation and in moments when the struggle seemed too much, you dug deep to persevere. You motivated each other through virtual gatherings and recreated your studios in your living areas. Inspiring each other with your innovation within your newfound limitations. You shared your work through virtual critiques and gathered for class on remote platforms, sometimes with your pets at your side and usually with a coffee in hand. Yet, you used your creative insights to reimagine what your thesis collections could be and saw them emerge with a new perspective.

With much admiration, Jenn Varekamp

Dear Brendan, Izzy, Lauren, and Sophia, out and touch the world. They are your tribal marks, your pirate banner, your relatedness; that is what will have you claimed at the gates of heaven as a proper human being, not the hundred times you put your own whims first.”Martin Shaw, Scatterlings: Getting Claimed in the Age of Amnesia “Talking to a friend at about the same time that Emerson published “Self-Reliance,” [Johann Wolfgang von] Goethe asks, “What am I?” and then answers: Everything that I have seen, heard, and observed I have collected and exploited. My works have been nourished by countless different individuals, by innocent and wise ones, people of intelligence and dunces. Childhood, maturity, and old age all have brought me their thoughts, … their perspectives on life. I have often reaped what others have sowed. My work is the work of a collective being that bears the name of Goethe. Any human being can be made to look like a self-reliant unique if you adjust the lighting properly and drop a gray canvas behind the figure; but let history enter, and sufficient sunlight, and of a sudden will appear the thousand-knotted net of human interdependence. Lewis Hyde, Common As Air: Revolution, Art, and Ownership and within that thousand-knotted net of human interdependence know that we will always be connected. On behalf of Karen, Susan, Deb, Nathalie, Lindsey, and Jenine, I wish you all the best!

You’ll recognize the words below from our online fibers gathering in honor of the four of you. That I chose these words to introduce the occasion and not any of the many other good words out there has everything to do with the qualities of interdependence and care that you four cultivated amongst yourselves and by extension, in our department. That we had that online gathering had everything to do with the four of you remembering how much it mattered to you as younger students to have the example of seeing the seniors present their own work. That the gathering itself took the form it did, with each of you having a text read that was written by the other three, had everything to do with you all naming the limits of what you could do in strange and heartbreaking circumstances and naming the possibilities of what you still could imagine. In holding both limit and possibility in tender relation, and in doing that collectively, you modeled something essential for us about what it is to cultivate care in the places and among the people with whom we study. I have (all of us have) learned so much from you. “As has been said better by others, in the end you have to become some kind of nutrient-rich, many-boughed tree of splendid crookedness to the ones coming. If you achieve nothing else, create some shade for the seedlings to grow. Practice becoming an ancestor. Outrageous and maintained generosity, a degree of useful wiliness, and worker’s hands are all identifying characteristics. Identity comes not from what you claim is your innermost self but from the myriad ways you reach

Dear Class of 2020,

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

Congratulations! You have overcome unprecedented challenges and I am so very proud of you. I wish you good luck and happiness, and I mean this with all my heart. Because I know you will encounter hardships and disappointments in life, as we all do, and you will need a bit of luck. So at times you might forget that you actually are the lucky ones. You have the privilege of education, art and of cinema. You are the lucky ones who can make art that can change people’s minds. You are the lucky ones who have the wellspring of all you have learned and created at MassArt. I would like you to remember this. You can always reach back and center yourselves with what you have already gained at MassArt. You have the good luck to be artists. Stendhal wrote, “Beauty is the promise of happiness” and I wish you a life of beauty. I can tell you adulthood has the promise of happiness. As you finally step into the world of adulthood, this is one promise I hope you will keep. That in a world full of injustice and unhappiness, what you will create will be an antidote. And your fulfilled lives will be lives of happiness. Good luck and be happy. Soon-Mi Yoo Professor and Chair Film/Video Department

Dearest KT, Sarah, Jacob and Ian, C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-L-A-T-I-O-N-S !!!! (please insert ribbiting frog horn sounds here)

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

We hope you feel great about what you’ve accomplished. It took a lot of hard work to reach this goal. You have summoned resourcefulness and diligence, courage and honesty, faith and humor, especially in recent times. You had to show up every day, whether you felt like it or not. We hope that you will continue to be that person who shows up day in and day out for what is worthwhile and important in life, in the same way that you have made a difference to MassArt’s Glass program. Jacob, we appreciate your leadership in the studio. You always extend a helping hand to other students. You have the ability to put yourself in another person’s shoes to hear their thoughts before positioning your own. The willingness to understand your surroundings, absorb its dynamics, make work from that place, and to foster growth of others while doing all that is valuable as you navigate future adventures. KT, the gentle kindness you extend to all that you touch is very special. You show unique clarity emerging from deep introspection and perceptive fantasy. You balance it with a disarming welcome of humor or surprise experienced outside yourself. This combination is powerful in a world that has too many sharp edges today. Your voice and your abilities to illustrate what most of us will never see otherwise are valuable. We hope you continue to build faith in them. Ian, your voluntary stewardship of the hot casting evening has opened up glass to everyone at MassArt. Like the art you make, your candid inputs on inequitable and disadvantaged aspects within our

program has revealed systemic schisms. Those are hard spaces to occupy. Thank you for being willing to engage them. Borrowing from Maya Angelou, now that we know better, we will do better. We look forward to your support as we mend gaps to build a stronger program. Sarah, we thank you for being our SGA representative. Thank you for watching out for the interests of your peers in addition to balancing your own practice and life. You did so with enormous grace and unwavering determination, empathy and thoughtfulness. Your transition into arts administration in order to facilitate development of other artists is well-matched with your skills in project, time and conflict management. For your poetry, we are grateful, and hope that it continues to be integral to your flame working practice. Sooooooo, Sarah, Ian , KT and Jacob, someday you’ll look back comfortably and think, “Wow, I graduated at the strangest time ever...“. It will be a story to tell. Until then, please know that we’ll be here for you, cheering you on and advocating for you. I, on behalf of Josie, Trina, James, Chris and Steve, want you to know that you inspire us. It has been our great privilege to know you and work with you. If there is anything any of us can offer by way of expertise, advice, critique or a sounding board, please reach out. We are only an email away :) Our wishes for you: May you always dare to do great things with your life — honest things, the right things, the things that matter. May you keep growing. Keep adding to goodness, beauty and action in the world. Keep developing the unique visions and talents that make you who you are. Live fulfilled lives! Love and pride. Today and always. History of Art

History of Art

But also, of course, be good. When the great Italian artist, Roberto Rossellini, was asked to summarize his philosophy of filmmaking, he gave the deceptively original response, “Love your neighbor”. Repeating the essential message of the Golden Rule is of course far from original, but claiming it as a motivation for and philosophy of making art is radical, and worth considering, especially if you as artists are responsible for making and remaking the world. My last prayer and hope and conviction is that you will never lose heart. Pun intended.

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

Two days before we in the History of Art Department received the request for a brief valedictory message to the Class of 2020, I had written an email to our Provost and soon-to-be President, Dr. Kymberly Pinder, explaining to her that I was just finishing my grading and that I had received the best work I have ever received in 34 years of teaching. I went on to say that, though there is nothing good about a pandemic, “the good that is in our students is a thing that cannot be broken. That’s what I learned this term.” I am happy and proud now to extend this expression of awe and admiration to the already famous and historically challenged and gloriously triumphant Class of 2020. I don’t want to say too much more, partly because, like Cordelia in King Lear, “I cannot heave my heart into my mouth,” and partly because I feel that I have been bossing you all around since your very first days at MassArt. Still, everything I told you is true and valid: you shouldn’t smoke, and you should floss daily, etcetera, all of which can be summarized in the constant chant or mantra of this terrible moment: Be well. So that is my advice: Be well.

Congratulations, Dah veed and the whole HART Department

Industrial Design

You have maneuvered an unimaginable set of circumstances to complete your undergraduate degree and it has been a humbling experience for all of us. Your demonstrated tenacity in the pursuit to complete your degree, highlighted many skills and abilities that define your best self. These circumstances, although immensely undesirable, were invaluable to your future self launching the start of a lifelong journey of learning and growing. You have the talent, the agility, the creativity, the stamina, to embrace the unknown, frame a space to explore and present compelling ideas for richer experiences, a great foundation for an excellent designer. Remember this as you move forward. Be the catalyst that makes our lives just a bit easier in big ways and small. Design has the power to affect change, you’ve got this!

Jewelry/Metalsmithing

Jewelry/Metalsmithing

You will see the interaction of wearability with movement, and the mechanics of opening, pulling, and rotating. Made by the hands of a skilled silversmith, these attributes take form as hollow constructed, miniature sterling silver toys. Han Gao. You will see a series of beautifully crafted formal explorations of line and volume around the wrist. Made with stainless steel cable, brass tubing, and crimping pliers; the only materials and tools available during quarantine. Sara Giordano. You will see a carved leather neck piece that visually melds scales and decorative armor. Titled Fury, it was made to empower the wearer with elegance and authority. It was fueled by personal rage stemming from the enforced isolation. Zoë Larson. You will see a jeweler whose personal definition of jewelry is so broad it invites inherent wearability into the realm of performance. When on the body, these wearables cleverly conflate currency, sexism, food, and mass consumption. Emma Scott. Finally, you will see work that addresses aspects of migration through a personal lens. Researching and employing pre-Columbian tools and methods, these silver and gold objects of adornment depict raw sadness and ultimate beauty. Jocelyn Solis. It has been a genuine honor working with each of these students. I look upon them with admiration as they start their artistic practices as fearless jewelers, metalsmiths, and makers.

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

On behalf of the Jewelry and Metalsmithing faculty; Professor Emeritus Joe Wood, Visiting Professor Barbara Seidenath, Guest Instructors Tia Dale, Tzu-Ju Chen, Carolanne Patterson, Studio Manager Peter Evonuk, and myself, I would like to express our deepest admiration for the perseverance of the J&M senior class of 2020. These students transitioned from MassArt’s studio into quarantine and with aplomb; they transformed personal isolation spaces into successful artist’s residencies. They learned how to create without state-of-the-art facilities and the communal support of their bench peers. They continued to be problem solvers and makers, not afraid to get gritty; having strong qualities of tough uncompromising realism. They are, in fact, artist jewelers. Professor Emeritus Jill Slossberg-Ackerman, who founded the Jewelry and Metals Program at MassArt in 1980, expressed with delight how our department has changed. Back then, she said, students would ask how to recreate a silver ring they saw in a gift shop and the idea of jewelry simply ended there. This year, Jill attended the senior thesis presentations, and remarked that the work is “amazing, this department has become everything I dreamed would happen, jewelry (at MassArt) is an art form now”. I agree with Jill wholeheartedly, the quality of the artistic investigations by our students is outstanding. In the following pages, you will observe that our seniors have created work that encompasses much more than the humble radius of a traditional ring. You will see a jeweler constructing essential fragments of a fictional narrative based on leaving and finding a metaphorical home. Facets of the story are told by equipping and documenting the body with poetic utility. Sarah Ellis.

To the 2D Class of 2020, I sense through my experience of working with the Class of 2020 this year that you are not going to “drop the mic” now and that you are ready to “bring it”. Together, all of us at MassArt and you seniors in particular are bound and shaped by every aspect of our collective experience this year. Your tributary will join the river at a juncture of particular importance to our planet’s and society’s future. Your experience of this place and time will shape your thoughts, feelings, and actions for years to come. Your Senior Catalog is testament to the power of creative action. It is a clear demonstration of MassArt seniors’ compassion, inventiveness and commitment. I am sure you will remember and use the experience of this year’s disruption, isolation, disappointment and today’s bittersweet elation to tell compelling stories that will demand our attention and ask us to care for everyone and everything on our planet. Seniors you are graduating from MassArt with a rare gift that most artists acquire after school, that gift is Purpose. Accept your gift, be confident, persistent and bring all that you have to life. Your MassArt family loves you, we see you, your invention, humor, compassion, criticality, outrage, kindness, and generosity. We have witnessed your ability to transform them all into hope, beauty, insight and change.

MassArt 2020 Senior Catalog

It has been quite a year. Each of us has a story to tell. Our world, no longer confined to the block, town, state, or country in which we live, has significantly changed. Travel, education, media, and virus connect us all. Every day we hear someone say “Who knew this would happen?”. Those of us who pay attention have known for some time what is going on. For example, the Mayan people have warned for more than three thousand years that “If you make an enemy of the earth, you make an enemy of your body”. I hope you can hear me say that artists are needed now more than ever. We are the ones who embrace the unknown and have the courage to manifest our dreams. What we do has never just been about making pretty things, selling products, or entertaining. Humanity depends on us to deflate the pompous, give witness to life’s wonder, pain and joy, to warn others, envision new ways to be, celebrate each other and our accomplishments, and honor our dead. Our role is to bind ourselves and others together through the example of our lives as well as the product of our creative imaginations. Artists encourage our fellow human beings by demonstrating courage and showing them how to stay the course by adjusting and thriving within the limitations that circumstances impose. Today’s situation demands that we immediately implement the secret transformative powers you have exercised and learned at MassArt. These powers do not shrink from pain or pleasure – sadness or joy – life or death. We must use them now to remind our communities of the necessity of resilience and empathy to our survival.

MY BODY NO LONGER BELONGS TO ME. A LOVE STORY. I have placed myself atop an alter decorated with sculptures of my body, crystals, jewelry and other magical objects of mine. I am pressing nails and screws into a plaster cast of my pelvis, a very blunt metaphor for my rape trauma.

Self-doubt, I believe, is healthy. It is the antidote to arrogance, which is complacency so often cloaked in confidence. It separates those open to learning from those unwilling to. The students whose art grace the pages of this catalog understood that their time in art school as a catalyst for growth. As Albert Einstein said, “Art is the expression of the profoundest thoughts in the simplest way. The work on these pages cut through all the white noise created by this Age of Information and of excess. They are a mother tongue of substance and style and most of all, heart. Although the students have graduated and moved on, their practice of exploring the world will persist. I suspect that being an artist with a capital A was never the driving force. In other words, MassArt was not a means to an end, but instead a springboard for a lifetime of inquiry.

So, believe me when I say there will be moments of self-doubt along the way. How can there not be when we are living through a period of darkness? Even before the pandemic I suspect the graduating Class of 2020 had some reservations about the current state of affairs, about what their role as artists might be. Dire times may seem to demand we cast aside the reverie of art-making for something more pragmatic and utilitarian. It takes courage to dream these days. It takes fortitude to find illumination in the darkness. But, once again, these moments of uncertainty can become the cornerstone to build on the potential of art and, ultimately, oneself. With this in mind, onward. Be brave.

MassArt is the perfect place to learn. Each class, each semester is unique and every student is an individual and everyone works as a part of a team constantly moving forward through the learning process in a fluid manner. It is never the same even when the same assignment is given. When the pandemic landed on us we all had to retreat to private places like apartments or back home, and to some students that meant going back to another country. The ways you picked up the pieces and hacked out of limited resources, a productive and creative time: this is your story. You will remember these difficult days, away from those great studios and equipment we all so much enjoy and that feed our passions for making. And also being away from your friends and your faculty and that positive collective energy that comes with comradery: this is your story. You may think you are here to build your art but actually you are building yourself. Every day you are building yourself.

Joseph Campbell, anthropologist, in a conversation with the Dali Lama asked about people wanting to know about the meaning of life. The Dali Lama responded, “People are not looking for the meaning of life. People are seeking an experience of being alive! Thank you all for your tenacity and courage and your effort not to give up despite the global pandemic that landed smack dab in the middle of the last semester of your senior year. You all hung in there and remained positive, creative and a pleasure to work with.
