12-13 From the President

As MassArt enters its 140th year, we reflect upon the legacy of the 19th century leaders of the Commonwealth who passed a ‘Drawing Act’ in 1870 to mandate drawing instruction throughout the state, and who three years later opened a school to support arts education. These cultural and civic leaders understood that visual literacy and arts education are vital components of advancing culture and driving forces for economic innovation and growth. Owing to this kind of visionary thinking, Massachusetts is a leading center of culture, education, and innovation and it remains as the only state in the nation with a free-standing public college of art and design: Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Today, as we are faced with unprecedented challenges on a global scale, art and design remain primary sources of imagination, ingenuity, and creative problem solving. These skills that are so necessary in the 21st century have always been at the core of a MassArt education and constitute our support to the creative economy. As one of the most affordable and outstanding art institutions for undergraduate and graduate professional degrees in the USA, MassArt is committed to the mission of providing a comprehensive educational experience to aspiring artists, designers, and art educators of all ages — regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has named Massachusetts College of Art and Design as one of the 2013 Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges. MassArt’s goal is to make a transformative difference in our students’ lives, so that they can make a difference in our communities, our culture, the creative economy, and global society. There are many ways and multiple paths to our doors. We work diligently to ensure graduation, professional opportunities, and success for students with talent,

ALL SCHOOL SHOW

CITIZEN ARTISTS/CITIZEN DESIGNERS

The All School Show is a long-standing tradition at MassArt. This exciting, student-directed, spring exhibition features work from students at all levels and across many majors at the college.

A commitment to civic engagement permeates all levels of MassArt’s academic and co-curricular programs. Through MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP), the college provides many opportunities for students to use their talents in collaboration with the wider community. CACP cultivates innovative, sustainable relationships to explore and expand the relevance of art in public life. Below are some examples of current and recent projects.

“There is no other school out there that has an all school art show that is completely run, executed, and curated by students from each major,” said Jessica Tenczar, Student Government Association President. “This event shows how MassArt makes us fearless and prepares us to be leaders in our fields of choice.” MassArt entrusts them with an exhibition of this scale and complexity because we have confidence in the depth of professional training that students receive throughout their academic programs. We also value the consistent support and proto-professional career training provided by our committed Student Development staff.

Students in Professor Elizabeth Resnick’s Graphic Design II course worked on a six-week curricular project in collaboration with the Harvard Medical School to design a graphics wrap for its mobile medical Family Van. The community engagement process developed previously by CACP for the sparc! the ArtMobile initiative provided a successful model for the Family Van.

For the first time, an exhibition catalog was produced to document this annual showcase of excellent student work. Limited edition copies are available at massartmade.com.

The Creating Community course at MassArt is a collaboration between the Art Education Department, CACP, and two partners: ABCD Parker Hill/ Fenway Neighborhood Service Center and Roxbury Tenants of Harvard (RTH). MassArt students create curriculum and share art with senior citizens at ABCD and RTH, while learning about each other’s lives and histories.

This year’s Fashion Show will be held at the Park Plaza Castle on May 17. For more information, contact Marjorie O’Malley at momalley@massart.edu or (617) 879-7045.

Engaged Practice was an exhibition organized by MassArt students to demonstrate the ways in which they are engaging with their studio practice and with the community through CACP.

discipline, and drive. Just this past year, our graduation rate has reached an all-time high of 72% — well above the national average of 56-59% — and 43% of our graduating seniors have completed internships; up from 33% in 2010. This would not be possible without the support of the Commonwealth, our private supporters and donors, and our citizen trustees. We deeply appreciate the Massachusetts State Legislature, including the Joint Commission on Higher Education, the Ways and Means Committees, our state representatives and senators, and Governor Patrick for providing an additional $15 million in the fiscal year 2014 state budget for the nine institutions of our State University System. With this increase, MassArt and the other state universities were able to freeze tuition and fees for the 2013-2014 academic year for our Massachusetts students. This new budget allocation is a major step towards an equitable funding formula for Massachusetts’ public universities, as we seek to meet the goal of 50% funding of education costs. This investment by the Commonwealth expands access to higher education and reduces the costs for our students and their families. It also represents a clear recognition that the state universities, including MassArt, educate the professional workforce — the backbone of the Massachusetts economy, the source of innovation, and the drivers of a thriving creative economy. Private philanthropy brings additional critical support to MassArt. The generosity of our alumni, parents, families, friends, faculty, and staff provides needed funds to advance and sustain important initiatives such as scholarships, career counseling, internships, faculty development, community partnerships, contemporary art exhibitions and educational programming, facilities, and innovative programs. We are particularly grateful for the MassArt Foundation members and college trustees, who work tirelessly to build private philanthropic giving to the college.

MASSACHUSETTS IS A LEADING CENTER OF CULTURE, EDUCATION, AND INNOVATION.

Last year, the MassArt Foundation distributed more than $1.4 million in scholarships, awards, and grants. Total fundraising for this past fiscal year was $2,236,409. MassArt’s institutional commitment to financial aid increased to $3.5 million, a $1 million increase from the previous year.

$756,025 on our new Design Passing by MassArt, you can see that much more is happening. In the summer of 2013, we broke ground and Media Center. This $40.4 million construction project will convert a former gymnasium into a new home for MassArt’s design and media programs, providing a flexible framework of studio and classroom space to support leading-edge practices and teaching methods, cross-disciplinary creativity, and outside collaborations. The Design and Media Center will transform 40,000 square feet of academic space and will be built to LEED Silver certification.

MassArt’s Design and Media Center is a major part of the vision and master plan for the college. Successful completion of this project in the fall of 2015 fulfills the goals set forth in the college’s strategic planning and realizes dreams among the MassArt community. Designed by Ennead Architects, it is one of the few capital campaign projects funded by Governor Deval Patrick, and it is the only higher education capital project supporting the state’s creative industries. The Bakalar & Paine Galleries are thriving. We had a year of ambitious exhibitions, including a retrospective of fashion designer Zandra Rhodes’ collections, exhibitions of contemporary ceramic sculpture, international posters, video/multi-media, and our second biennial juried alumni exhibition. We also increased our award-winning educational programs by piloting a reimagined student gallery attendant program. The 12 gallery attendants are part of a larger student team of over 100 students who receive significant pre-professional training in museum practices from the galleries’ staff. In the 2013 graduating class alone, students from the galleries’ team have gone on to work at the Guggenheim Museum, Barbara Krakow Gallery,

CREATING PATHWAYS THROUGH ART

The Tree House, the newest addition to the MassArt campus, welcomed its first student residents in September 2012. With 493 beds, this $64.1 million 21-story residence hall has doubled the college’s housing capacity to accommodate all freshmen and sophomores, and increased access for out-of-region and international students. Part architectural achievement and part work of art, the Tree House was designed by ADD, Inc. with extensive student involvement merging sustainable, practical, and aesthetic elements.

MassArt offers an extensive range of youth programs, serving 700– 750 young students annually with the opportunity to develop creative skills. Artward Bound — our flagship four-year college-access program in the visual arts — is the youth program developed specifically for underserved students who live and attend school in Boston. The Artward Bound program prepares students with artistic, academic, and personal skills, for admission and academic success at a college of art and design or other college experience. Launched in the summer of 2012, with a cohort of 30 rising 8th and 9th graders, Artward Bound is one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. The second cohort of 15 students began the program this past summer.

“The highlight of living in the Tree House as a first-year student was being able to work on similar assignments with other residents and constantly being inspired by our incredible view of Boston,” said Alexander Armand Nally ‘16. Since its completion, the Tree House has been recognized for architectural excellence as a 2013 Best Tall Building in Americas Finalist by the Council on Tall Buildings, honored with an Educational Facilities Award and distinguished as a Harleston Parker Medal finalist by the Boston Society of Architects, and received honorable mention for Delivery Process Innovation from the American Institute of Architects. Artward Bound students participate in a six-week summer program of art and academics. During the school year, they attend after-school sessions twice a week and enroll in at least one of MassArt’s other Youth Program offerings each semester. Students also work on afterschool community engagement art projects.

In June 2013, MassArt hosted Ellipses: Alumni Works in 3D in our Bakalar Gallery. Showcasing the breadth of talent and excellence embodied by MassArt’s alumni, the exhibition featured the work of twenty-five artists spanning the classes of 1937-2012.

The last big step in our 10-year master plan, the Bakalar & Paine Galleries renovation initiative will allow for yearround programming, exhibition of delicate works on loan from major institutions, accessibility upgrades, and visitor amenities. You will be hearing much more about our transformative plans for the galleries in the upcoming months. As we look back upon our accomplishments over this past year and our 140-year history as a leader in visual art and design education, we are proud of MassArt’s contributions to contemporary culture and economic innovation. It is through the creative accomplishments of our alumni and the professional practices of our faculty and staff that we see the positive and broad impact that this singular college has made locally, and increasingly, in the international arena. To continue that legacy and to complete our trajectory, we will need to rely upon the collective fearlessness of our academic community and loyal supporters to sustain and advance Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Your confidence in our mission of excellence and accessibility is vital to our success and deeply appreciated. Your trust in our purpose and impact in the development of our future artists and designers is our greatest resource.

alison beker judd ‘07 Alison Beker Judd is a 2007 alumna of the Master of Fine Arts program at MassArt. As a student, she saw how challenging it was for her fellow classmates to give up paid employment for two academic years in order to pursue full-time studies. She also learned of the lack of scholarship opportunities available to graduate students at the college. Realizing there was an unmet need, she worked to establish the Beker Family Scholarships through her family’s foundation, The Beker Foundation. “We created the scholarships as a way to encourage highlyqualified artists to pursue graduate studies at MassArt and to help the college develop its capacity to offer financial assistance to attract top candidates,” says Alison. Since 2009, the Beker Family Scholarships have significantly benefitted 14 graduate students. The program is designed to foster a stronger philanthropic mindset amongst MassArt alumni, and to convey the value and importance of giving back to the college. Beker Scholars are asked to help the next generation of artists by contributing artwork to the annual MassArt Auction during and after their graduate studies at the college. Proceeds from the sales of these works go to support the Beker Family Scholarships fund.

david & holly bruce

David and Holly Bruce are passionate about art and education. Along with helping to direct the charitable efforts of the Highland Street Foundation, founded by Holly’s family, they are actively involved with many cultural initiatives and world-class museums including the ICA in Boston.

A key priority of the Highland Street Foundation is supporting educational and enrichment opportunities for young people to help ensure their future success. By providing scholarships to MassArt students, they aid in eliminating some of the obstacles many students have in affording college and decrease the future burden of student loans. “We have always valued the critical role of art in our society and have a deep appreciation for its vast contributions to our culture and our economy,” said Holly. “We have partnered with MassArt for nearly a decade because of its rich history as the first public art college in the United States and its success in cultivating the next generation of leaders in the fields of art, design and art education.”

Like MassArt, another important focus of the foundation is to increase community awareness and opportunities around the arts. Highland Street’s Free Fun Fridays provide free admission to area museums and cultural institutions.
