The winner of this commission will receive a custom portrait, made in Steven Spazuk’s signature technique: fumage (soot from fire). Spazuk will use photographs that the winner provides to create an image that effectively translates into his unique medium. The black and white fumage painting will be made on a 20 x 16 inch panel, with the winner’s choice of a copper, silver, or gold-leaf border around the edges. The artwork will be shipped to the owner upon completion, guaranteed before the end of 2021.

Over the past 16 years, Spazuk has refined his skill of painting with fire – creating exquisitely vivid figures and animals from the residue of his candle’s brushstrokes. He has become an internet sensation, and recently was recruited as a sponsored artist by Zippo. Erin M. Riley earned an MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2009 and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2007, both in fibers. Erin is a MacDowell Colony fellow (2010, 2018), and a previous artist in residence of Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, The Corporation of Yaddo. Riley was a 2020 NYFA Fellowship recipient and is represented by P.P.O.W Gallery in New York, NY.

Born in Baltimore, Derrick Adams is a Brooklyn-based artist whose critically admired work spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance, video, and sound installations. His work references Black identity and culture in America. Adams received his MFA from Columbia University and BFA from Pratt Institute. He is an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group shows internationally including the Birmingham Museum of Art; Havana Biennial, Cuba; Museum of Art, Denver; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; The Studio Museum in Harlem. Adams’s works are in private and public collections including Agnes Gund Collection; Ford Foundation; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Clint Baclawski is a contemporary artist working with photography, technology, light, and space. He holds an MFA from MassArt and a BFA from RIT. His solo exhibitions include San Luis Obispo, St. Louis, Boston, and Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a 2019 grant recipient of the MA Cultural Council Fellowship. Baclawski is represented by Abigail Ogilvy and his studio is in Boston’s South End.

Matar is a 2018 Guggenheim Fellow. Her work has been exhibited in museums worldwide, including in solo exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art and Amon Carter Museum of Art, and also at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Carnegie Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Howard Greenberg Gallery, and National Portrait Gallery, London. Her work is in the permanent collections of several museums.

Mutu received her MFA from Yale University. Her work has been the subject of solo shows at museums and institutions throughout the US and abroad including: Le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Montreal; WIELS, Brussels; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Miami Art Museum. Her work has also appeared in numerous group shows at institutions including: Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Gotesborgs Kunsthalle, Sweden; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Liverpool, UK; Minneapolis Institute of Art; and The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. In 2010 Mutu received the Deutsche Guggenheim Artist of the Year, Berlin.

Polly Apfelbaum (b. 1955) has lived and worked in New York City since 1978. She is primarily known for her colorful drawings, sculptures and fabric floor pieces. Apfelbaum’s work has been exhibited extensively in the US and abroad and in 2004 was the focus of a mid-career survey initiated by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia which travelled to the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City. She has received numerous awards and honors including the Joan Mitchell Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Apfelbaum’s work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Israel Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery, among others.

Alice Denison’s Pangloss paintings explode with energy and extravagance. Ornately rendered plants and flowers, floating on top of darker backgrounds as if they were sewn into tapestries, appear otherworldly, with a dreamlike rendering unlike most grounded still lifes. While ostensibly decorative, the paintings reward prolonged inspection. Denison studied painting as an undergraduate in 1980, pursued other directions, and has returned to the studio with devotion in the past fifteen years. Her work was spurred by a 2007 MFA program of Massachusetts College of Art and Design conducted at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Alice Denison is represented by Gallery NAGA in Boston, MA.

Zhang Huan is considered one of the most influential contemporary Chinese artists of our time. One of the founders of the influential Beijing East Village in the early 1990s, the artist quickly became known for his often excruciating site-specific performance pieces. Most recently, Zhang’s focus has shifted to include paintings, sculptures and works on paper that incorporate motifs from Chinese folk culture and Buddhism. He lives and works in Shanghai and New York.

John Thompson founded and works at Lincoln Studios in Waltham. He teaches printmaking at MassArt and Framingham State University. He prints with Master Printers Peter Pettengill at Wingate Studio and Sue Oehme at Oehme Graphics. John’s work is featured in public collections nationally and internationally. He is represented by Childs Gallery in Boston as well as several other galleries in the US. John has earned degrees from Syracuse University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Babson College, and MassArt.

Yuri Tozuka received a BFA in Fine Arts 3D from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Tozuka is influenced by elements such as dark humor, satire, and illogical notion. Tozuka’s necklace is inspired by pipes found in cityscapes that are often considered a blemish on the landscape. The artist found a harmonious beauty in the industrial installations. By fabricating these structures within the form of something typically beautiful, she hopes to share this insight with others. Tozuka’s work has been honored with numerous awards and has been internationally exhibited and collected.

Nona Faustine is a photographer and visual artist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts and The International Center of Photography at Bard College’s MFA program. Faustine’s images have been published in a variety of media outlets such as Artforum, New York Times, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, The Guardian, New Yorker Magazine, and Los Angeles Times. Faustine’s work has been exhibited at Harvard University, the Studio Museum of Harlem, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Schomburg Center for Black Research, the International Center of Photography, Saint John’s Divine Cathedral, and the Tomie Ohtake Institute. Her work is in the collections of the David C. Driskell Center, the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Carnegie Museum. In 2019, Faustine was the recipient of the NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship, the Colene Brown Art Prize, and the Anonymous Was A Woman grant. In January 2020, she participated in the inaugural class of Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal Residency.

During the 1950s he designed and made furniture in New York, but after a fire that destroyed most of the contents of his shop in 1958 he turned again to art, initially painting abstract pictures derived from memories of the New Mexican landscape. From 1962, Artschwager also painted grey acrylic monochrome pictures, basing his images on blackand-white photographs, characteristically of modern buildings as shown in property advertisements. Gradually his paintings became more complex and mysterious, the surface subsumed in a pattern of flickering light. His emphasis, however, remained on ambiguities of perception-on the interaction of observation and illusion-especially in sculptures conceived as hybrids of recognizable objects.

Cheryl Sorg received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 1999. Her work was recently exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art and is currently on view at the San Diego International Airport. She has been a MacDowell fellow and her work is in the permanent collection of the Yale University Art Gallery, as well as numerous public spaces.

Kehinde Wiley is a contemporary African-American painter known for his distinctive portraits. Wiley melds references from many sources, including Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte, Islamic architecture, and hip hop culture. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999 and his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2001. Exhibitions including Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic, which opened at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2015. On February 12, 2018, Wiley unveiled the official presidential portrait of Barack Obama. Wiley’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Denver Art Museum, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others. Barbara Bosworth is a photographer whose large-format images explore both overt and subtle relationships between humans and the rest of the natural world. Bosworth’s work has been widely exhibited, notably in recent retrospectives at the Denver Art Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and “structures” (a term he preferred instead of “sculptures”) but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist’s books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965.

Fred H. C. Liang received a BFA from the University of Manitoba, and an MFA from Yale University. His honors include Massachusetts Cultural Council Arts Grants in both painting, printmaking, and works on paper. Liang’s work is in numerous public and private collections, including Fidelity, the Gund Collection, Addison Gallery of American Art, and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University

Masako Kamiya received her BFA from Montserrat College of Art, her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and is currently an associate professor at Montserrat. She received the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant in 2017 and was named a Brother Thomas Fellow in 2015. She received Massachusetts Cultural Council Painting Fellowships in 2006 and 2010 and recently completed a residency at the Custom House Studios in Westport, Ireland. Her work is in the collections of the Boston Public Library and the Danforth Art Museum. Kamiya is represented by Gallery NAGA in Boston, MA.

April Gornik’s subject matter is the light and colors of the landscape. An especially talented draftsperson, Gornik is able to give her images vibrant luminosity through careful and precise rendering. Never literal, the landscapes she creates are imagined and emotional spaces. Gornik’s work is featured in many public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC and The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, among others. She has shown extensively, in solo and group shows, in the United States and abroad.

ROBERT FREEMAN

Ellsworth Kelly was born in 1923 in Newburgh, New York. He studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, from 1941 to 1943. After military service from 1943 to 1945, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, Boston, from 1946 to 1948. In 1949, Kelly went to France and enrolled at the École des beaux-arts, Paris, under the GI Bill In France. He discovered Romanesque art and architecture as well as Byzantine art. He was also introduced to Surrealism and Neo-Plasticism, which led him to experiment with automatic drawing and geometric abstraction. In his work Kelly abstracts the forms in his paintings from observations of the real world, such as shadows cast by trees or the spaces between architectural elements.

In addition to numerous gallery shows, Freeman’s paintings have been featured in exhibitions at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Williams College Museum of Art Harvard University. He earned his BFA and MFA from Boston University. In 1997 he earned Boston University’s Distinguished Graduate Award.

Donovan received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth. She is the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation Genius Award (2008), the first Calder Prize (2005), and exhibits her work internationally. Her first major survey exhibit was at ICA Boston. Donovan has been the subject of several major solo exhibitions at museums including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1999); UCLA Hammer Museum (2004); The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2007); Milwaukee Art Museum (2012); Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, New York (2015); and Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (2018).

Leah Giberson received a BFA in painting from MassArt, graduating with departmental honors in 1997. Recent exhibits include Rubine Red Gallery in Palm Springs, Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet and Gallery Ton in the Netherlands. Her next solo show will be in July at Nahcotta in Portsmouth, NH. Her work is in the permanent collections at the University of Iowa Hospital and Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Thompson’s work has recently been exhibited at Galerie Renate Bender in Munich as well as at Galería Ana Serratosa in Valencia. His next exhibition will be at the Medici Museum of Art in Ohio. $7,500 Courtesy of the artist and Carroll and Sons David Hilliard uses his unique, multi-paneled technique to produce expensive photographs, both figuratively and literally. His sweeping images depict subtle moments of love, family, adolescence, friendship and the nuances of masculinity, with a quiet yet powerful resonance. The multiple panels act as short films; a single work captures the passage of time before our very eyes. The winner of this commission will receive a custom 24 x 60 triptych set of photographs crafted in collaboration with the artist. Date of commission to occur at a mutually agreed upon time within one year of the Auction. There will be additional travel expenses for locations outside of metropolitan Boston.

Hilliard received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and his MFA from Yale University. He has had solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. Hilliard is the recipient of numerous grants including a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as a Fulbright Grant. His work is included in many collections, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Microsoft Art Collection (MA), Portland Art Museum (OR), deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, the University of Salamanca (Spain), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. His work has been published in many books and publications throughout the world. He lives in Boston and is a faculty member at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Stanley Whitney (b. 1946) has experimented for decades with a single compositional strategy rendering grids with seemingly inexhaustible variations of color. Whitney draws inspiration from a wide range of historical and cultural references including Roman architecture, American quilt making, and jazz, which he listens to while working in the studio. Whitney’s work is included in public collections around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Yale University Art Gallery. He has won prizes including the Robert De Niro Sr. Prize in Painting, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Art Award and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Whitney is currently Professor emeritus of painting and drawing at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. Stanley Whitney has been making monotypes and editions at Two Palms since 2016. Inspired by architectural forms and topographical shapes in nature, Kwon aspires to create works which combine the renderings of an architect with the delicate skills of a master jeweler. Employing multiple gages of gold and silver wire in varied tones, the artist’s works are distinguished by their ’see-through-spaces.’ Fluidly interlinked organic forms suggest dynamic movement, especially accentuated by the white and black of silver and Shakudo. Kwon’s work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Kamm Teapot Foundation, North Carolina.

Prior to beginning her career as a professional artist, Pat Monson received her RN from the University of Minnesota. After moving to Boston in the early 1980s, she began exploring her interest in fine arts. She attended Tufts University, where she received her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees, and the School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, where she earned her Fifth Year Certificate. She spent several years teaching courses on drawing and water-based paint at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She was a recipient of the Pratt Fourth International Print Exhibition, Purchase Award, Clarissa Bartlett Traveling Scholarship, and Alumni Award. Pat Monoson’s work is held in a number of corporate and private collections.

Charles (Chuck) Arnoldi is a painter, sculptor and printmaker. Arnoldi’s work is best known for its colorful abstraction, incorporating the use of wood as an expressive medium, often using tree branches and twigs. His longtime friend, architect Frank Gehry has written of him: ’The best art made is intuitive, not overly intellectualized—it is what it is, and it’s got the passion of the artist expressed through whatever materials are used. It comes into existence almost as a surprise. In Chuck’s case, the surprises have been many. They are often essays in beauty and always engaging.’

Daniel Szabo earned a Master of Engineering, Computer Engineering, at RPI in 1980 and an MFA in photography from MICA in 1999. He has worked as a software engineer, photographer, photographic retail sales, photo color lab technician, movie projectionist, admissions counselor, and academic advisor.

Paul Endres Jr. received his BA from Providence College in 2008 and his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in 2011. By referencing the techniques of canonical painters such as Jaques-Louis David and Benjamin West, Endres examines “the absurdity of historical inaccuracies in artwork,” in close detail. Endres taught figure painting at SMFA/Tufts and various painting and drawing courses at the Essex Art Center in Lawrence, MA. He currently teaches at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA. Endres’s work can be found in many private collections as well as the Grand Rapids Museum of Art in Grand Rapids, MI, and the Philips Memorial Library in Andover, MA. In 2013 Endres received an Emerging Artist Award from the St. Botolph Club Foundation, as well as a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Award in 2012 and the Springborn Fellowship in 2010. The Boston Globe featured his work in a 2011 article, “High Five: Five Young Artists to Watch.”

Matt Demers (b. 1990) is a visual artist living and working in Gardiner, Maine. He works intuitively and spontaneously using a variety of materials to build dynamic compositions of marks and forms. His work is held in collections of Unity College and the Alfond Center for Health, and was recently exhibited at the Rochester Museum of Fine Arts in Rochester, New Hampshire.

Romare Bearden graduated from NYU with a degree in education. He attended the Art Students League in New York and later, the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1935, Bearden became a weekly editorial cartoonist for the Baltimore Afro-American, which he continued doing until 1937. He is best known for his richly textured collages, two of which appeared on the covers of Fortune and Time magazines in 1968. An innovative artist with diverse interests, Bearden also designed costumes and sets for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and programs, sets and designs for Nanette Bearden’s Contemporary Dance Theatre. Bearden was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his lifetime. He received the Mayor’s Award of Honor for Art and Culture in New York City in 1984 and the National Medal of Arts in 1987.

Alysia Macaulay received a BA in art history from William Smith College, and studied at the International Center of Photography in New York from 2009-2011. Her work was recently featured in a solo exhibition at the LaiSun Keane Gallery. In the spring of 2021 her new collage work will be shown at the LaiSun Keane Gallery, where she is represented.

Mark Dion (b. 1961) was awarded a BFA in 1986 and an honorary doctorate in 2002 from the Hartford Art School of the University of Hartford, CT. He attended the School of Visual Arts, NY from 1983-1984 and the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program in 1984-1985. Dion has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and his work is represented in the museum collections here and abroad. A notable commissioned work is his permanent outdoor installation and learning lab at the Olympic Sculpture Park made for the Seattle Art Museum. Dion has often focused his artistic investigations on the complex history of the representation of nature, the practice of archeology and the culture of collecting.

The artist will work with the winners of this commission to produce a portrait painting of them from life. The process will include a one to two hour, safe, and socially distanced sitting with the artist, during which she will put down a black and white underpainting sketch. She will then capture a number of photographs of her subjects, and will use them to complete the painting in her studio. Date of commission to occur at a mutually agreed upon time within one year of the Auction.

Daphne received her MFA from Boston University in 2000. She shows with Gallery Kayafas in Boston, William Scott Gallery in Provincetown, and will be showing at Nordiska Galleriet in Stockholm, Sweden as soon as the pandemic is over. Peter Raimondi is a Florida-based entrepreneur and artist born in Massachusetts in 1955. He received his JD in 1983 and BA in 1980 from Boston University after attending MassArt. Vaillancourt received a BA from UNC, 1972; MA from RISD, 1975. Her work is presently showing at Dean Day Gallery, Houston. In 2018, Vaillancourt was selected by the MBTA to create large-scale glass art for the outdoor elevator at the new Ball Square station, Somerville, to be installed in 2021. Among her corporate clients are Bank of Montreal, Biogen IDEC, Tokyo Millennium, and Hale and Dorr LLP.

Mary Kocol’s work draws upon themes of the garden, landscape, and the seasons. Kocol creates botanical ice tablets. The blossoms are collected from her garden as well as gardens of friends and family, frozen into ice and photographed in sunlight to become fanciful and ethereal constructions. Blooms and ice are temporary; the photograph becomes the permanent art object – the record that they once briefly existed. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Keira Kotler grew up in Boston and graduated from Columbia University before moving west at the end of the 1990s and settling in the Bay Area. Jim Keevan, a former personal trainer, always enjoyed drawing as a kid. He was encouraged to continue to do more art work. He has had drawings in the last two MassArt Auctions and both have sold. Taiko Chandler lives and works in Denver, CO. She was born and raised in Nagano, Japan, and was originally trained as a nurse. Cameron received a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University. He began his career as an apprentice to Frank Gehry, teaching design and theory at Harvard, RISD and MIT, and spending several years as a consulting architect before turning to painting. His work was recently exhibited at Webster and Company and the Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery.

Mixed-media artist Paula Wilson enlists an extensive range of techniques to create her hybrid works. Using sculpture, collage, painting, installation, and printmaking methods such as silkscreen, lithography, and woodblock, Wilson explores perceptions of light, form, and the body in space. Equally multifaceted as her densely layered collages is her subject matter and vast expanse of inspirations, drawn from cultural histories, identities, and an exploration of various female personas.

Katrina Majkut received an MFA degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. Her work was recently exhibited at Smack Mellon, Victori + Mo, Arsenal, and Dorsky Gallery. Majkut exhibits nationally in commercial and in college galleries. In 2022, she will be in the Bronx Museum Biennial as an AIM fellow. In 2021, she is the social practice art resident at Emmanuel College and a Wassaic Projects family fellow.

David Haas received a BFA in photography at MassArt in 1980, and an MFA in photography at the University of Delaware in 1995. Haas taught at Muhlenberg College for 24 years. He received a contract with the National Park Service in 1996 and has worked with them to this day. He has been a fine art black and white printer for many noted photographers since 1981. His work can be found in the George Eastman Museum and the Library of Congress.

Elisa H. Hamilton is a socially engaged multimedia artist who creates inclusive artworks that emphasize shared spaces and the hopeful examination of our everyday places, objects, and experiences. A self-taught artist, Winfred Rembert records a painful chapter of American history in autobiographical paintings, created on hand-tooled and dyed leather, which explore the lives of African Americans in Jim Crow-era Georgia. After taking part in civil rights demonstrations, he survived a lynching only to be sent to prison to do hard labor on a chain gang. Another inmate taught him leatherworking and Rembert began depicting his past in engaging compositions and vibrant color. In many scenes, Rembert offers a raw view of racism, inequality, and violence while celebrating his community’s resilience in the face of such overwhelming injustice.

Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was an American artist linked to various movements, including Conceptual art and Minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and “structures” (a term he preferred instead of “sculptures”) but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist’s books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965.

While studying economics at American University, he often took studio classes as time allowed. A lifelong medical condition, Cerebral AVM, took a turn for the worse in 2018 and he was unable to return to American University. He loved his time at AU, but he turned the situation into a positive endeavor and delved into pursuing his artistic interests. He was most happy to see his artistic talents bloom under the guidance of MassArt alumnus Kevin Whitman ’15 at Lincoln Studios in Waltham, MA. He also enthusiastically explored pottery at Indigo Fire Studios in Belmont, MA. Regular blocks of studio time allowed space for Lucas to discover the many possibilities of printmaking, painting, and drawing. His work employed both handwork and digital input. The generosity of spirit and laughter was the hallmark of Lucas’s time in the studio. His areas of special interest were the exploration of drypoint and monotype. He especially loved projects that served as promotions for causes and family businesses. Lucas’s interest in printmaking centered on creating designs that speak to current issues confronting himself and his peers. Along with creating his own work, Lucas partnered with his friend, Ben Hollander in the collective called Vision Camp which focused on creating unique design and innovative imagery. They participated in Open Studios at Joy Street and Brickbottom Studios in Somerville. MassArt is thankful to Elissa and Bill Warner for their support of MassArt and especially for the donation of Lucas’s artwork to the 2021 MassArt Auction. Lucas brought joy to the studio as he worked on his art and lifted the spirits of those around him every day. His last paintings were a series entitled Having Fun. Sullivan received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and BFA from MassArt. Recent shows include the Augusta Savage Gallery, Amherst 2020, and a solo show at Bromfield Gallery, Boston 2019. Sullivan was awarded the Guggenheim Museum Curators Award in 2018. He teaches drawing at MassArt and has work in private collections in L.A., San Francisco, Boston, New York and Europe.

James Siena is a master of virtuosic simplicity, creating his images from formulaic configurations of lines, interlocking combs, concentric circles, or other basic forms. The magic of Siena’s work comes from the remarkable blend of patience, exactitude, intuition, and grace with which he executes the “visual algorithms” he devises. Pat Falco is an artist and organizer from Boston. He received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His work has been shown around town and he is the recent recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship (Sculpture/Installation/New Genres), a participant in the Now & There Public Art Accelerator program, and an Artist-In-Residence with the City of Boston.

Julian Opie (b. 1958) lives and works in London. Between 1979 and 1982 he studied at the Goldsmiths School of Art in London. Opie makes paintings, sculptures, films and installations in public spaces. In his works, he employs electronic media to widen the boundaries of the traditional media such as oil painting or sculpture. The person has a key place in his art, and is often represented in movement. He portrays members of his family, friends and workers at his studio as well as anonymous passers-by and commissioning collectors. Opie not only focuses on museum and gallery exhibitions, he also uses other opportunities and spaces to create and exhibit art. He is well known for his album covers including the album of the British group Blur (Blur: Best of 2000).

Katherine Bowling is a New York-based painter known for her luminescent, meditative, and mysterious landscapes, painted based on the area surrounding her home in the Hudson Valley. Bowling earned her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978. She has exhibited her work since the early 1980s throughout the US. Her most recent solo exhibition at DC Moore Gallery was Moments of Grace (2010). Bowling has received numerous awards including a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1991. Brett Angell received his BFA and MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Born in Texas of Iraqi/Israeli background, Freiberg has an MFA in painting from Boston University and a BA from Smith College. Steve Stankiewicz was born in Boston and grew up in Chicago. He received a BA in sociology from the University of Connecticut in 1979, and a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1982. He worked at Bob Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop in New York from 1982 until 1989, then at his own studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn until moving to Easthampton, Massachusetts in 2010. Since 1992, he has focused on making artists’ books of twenty to thirty etchings based on a single theme. The books are in selected collections including The Mississippi Museum of Fine Arts, The New York Public Library, and the Mortimer Rare Book Room. He is also the winner of the 2002 Faux Faulkner Literary Prize.

Elliot Schildkrout began photography in the 1960s studying with Lisette Model, William Giles, and others. While practicing medicine in 1981, he was accepted into the Polaroid Collection and worked with SX-70 and 4x5 Polaroid materials; one of his images was published in Barbara Hitchcock’s book The Polaroid Collection.

Kristina McComb is an interdisciplinary artist from Western Massachusetts. Lucy received a BA from New York University in 2019. Recently, she curated a 22-piece installation of her own Cuban photography at Casa Caña restaurant, which was named Boston’s Most Beautiful Restaurant of the Year by Eater magazine. Meryl Blinder received an MFA in 1999 from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. Recent shows include Cape Cod Museum of Art, and From Bauhaus to Jane’s House in NY. John Rego is a freelance illustrator and painter living in Brooklyn, New York. His work is inspired by the absurdities of the human and natural world, often juxtaposing the two. Primarily working in acrylics his style is inspired by pop-surrealism, romanticism, and 19th century scientific illustration.

Ian Davis is a Los Angeles-based painter whose work is rooted in meticulous, intricate drawing. His open-ended narratives take place within a looming apocalypse. The Black Balloons print references the current opioid epidemic. Davis received his BFA from Arizona State University. He has had solo exhibitions at Night Gallery, Los Angeles; Josh Lilley Gallery, London; Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, New York; The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; Acuna-Hansen Gallery, Los Angeles. He has also been featured in group exhibitions at The Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, NE; and The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland, KS; among others. In 2018, his work appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine.

Joanna Webster holds a bachelor of science in botany, a bachelor of arts in journalism, and a graduate certificate in environmental management, all from the University of Queensland, Australia. Spending 15 years as a scientific writer, Joanna has focused professionally on the communication of environmental, sustainability, community development and project planning and management issues, particularly those surrounding large civil Infrastructure and mining projects. Jo’s love of botany and drawing led her to immerse herself in the Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration program in 2015. Her artiste media are quill and in watercolor, graphite, and color pencil. All artworks and illustrations are created from sight using physical specimens (occasionally with the support of her own photographs for reference when a work is likely to take a considerable length of time).

Henry Cataldo received an MFA from Yale University, a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and a BS from Stonehill College. He has taught photography for over 30 years at several different institutions including Massachusetts College of Art and Design, College of the Holy Cross, Boston University, and Concord Carlisle High School. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions.

Rick Fox, a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MFA) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (BFA), studied with George Nick, a longtime realist painter and mentor to many painters in New England. Fox’s work began as a response to his environment by portraying his surroundings with honest detail. Fox’s work has deviated from the direct observation he had practiced for years; almost paradoxically, his shapes have flattened while still relaying volume and space. Fox likes Cezanne’s approach, remarking, “In order to create honesty you need to embrace the flatness of the surface. I’m experimenting with how much I can simplify the shapes but with the goal of trying to use flatness to get more volume and illusion.” In that simplification, suddenly new opportunities arise to organize and push color. Heather White is a current professor of Fine Arts 3D at MassArt. White’s work is highly influenced by historical metal objects and ornamentation made for royal figures, non-secular rituals, and military forces such as crowns, brooches and other forms of adornment. White’s work combines the inherent beauty of working with precious metals with larger issues surrounding ornamentation and decoration. White is a Fulbright Scholar and has a national and international exhibition record including the Bavarian Association for Arts and Crafts, Munich, the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, England, the Society for Arts and Crafts, Boston and the Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh. White’s work is held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum; as well as numerous private collections throughout the United States and internationally.

A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Hannon worked as a goldsmith for five years in New York City before attending the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Munich on a Fulbright scholarship. Hannon creates colorful, sculptural necklaces constructed from complex interlocking forms. Models are first made in cardboard and then transformed in Formica. Hannon’s work is in the collections of the Marzee Collection, Nijimegen, Netherlands; the Estonian Museum of Art and Design, Tellinn, Estonia; The Mint Museum, NC; and the Racine Museum of Art, WI. Seulgi Kwon received both a BFA and MFA in Metalwork and Jewelry Fabrication from Kookmin University in Seoul, Korea. Kwon’s sculptural forms are fabricated from silicone and often embedded with thread, fabric, feathers, pigment and paper. The end result features the lightness of silicone combined with the translucent effect of glass. Elysha Roberts received her BFA from MassArt. She was a resident artist at Rochester Institute of Technology. She received the Saul Bell Design award and was a finalist for the Halstead Design Award. Her work recently traveled across Europe in the exhibition Eloquence of Paper Jewelry. She currently owns and operates The Workshop, an artist collective on Martha’s Vineyard.

Joe Wood is a Professor Emeritus of the Fine Arts 3D Department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design where he is currently a visiting lecturer. “Much of my work stems from a continuing interest in the rich tradition of jewelry making. I am particularly interested in the use of synthetic ornament as a visual communicator. The most recent work involves the use of computer modeling and rapid prototype object making. Computer modeling easily allows the arrangement of elemental (primitive) forms into synthetic arrangements; often based on repetition and rhythm. My interest in this lies in their association to the structure of traditional ornament.” Wood’s work is in the collections of museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution.

Asagi Maeda replicates her unique view of the world using hand-fabricated figures and environments encased in plexiglass and resin. Maeda grew up in the pearl business, and studied sculpture, gemology and then jewelry making. She creates dreamy worlds in miniature to express her belief that jewelry should be about wearing ideas, not just gemstones. Her work is in the collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, as well as numerous private collections.

“My approach to jewelry often begins with a focus on the relationship between the jewelry piece and the human body. I look for simplicity and harmony in this relationship through the process of making: experimenting with materials and forms, constructing one part at a time, pausing to see the effect on the body. In the end I feel the need to leave an imperfection or add or eliminate an element, so that there is something a bit off or unexpected, at times in search of tension, rigor, sometimes for a touch of warmth.” Shimizu received her Masters Degree from Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence. Her work is held in numerous private collections, as well as the permanent collection of Grassi Museum in Germany.

Arata Fuchi (b. Japan), graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in Tokyo with a degree from the Industrial Design program in 1999. Interested in how the regular and irregular unite to make an intended shape and the idea that small points accumulate to become a line, Arata Fuchi’s brilliant technical skills are evident with his various techniques and use of materials, including Shibuichi, a traditional Japanese alloy of copper, and silver, and for the earrings gold spheres, Keum-Boo, an ancient Korean gilding technique is used, depleting the surface of sterling silver to bring up fine silver, then applying thin gold wire to fine silver wire with heat and pressure. Fuchi’s work is in the collections of The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, The Spencer Museum of Art, Kansas and the Swiss National Museum, Switzerland.

Momoko Kumai received an MA in goldsmithing, silversmithing, metalwork and jewellery from the Royal College of Art in London. Kumai’s jewelry is inspired by the concept of movement and fluidity. Each carefully engineered piece consists of hand hammered, dimensional shapes in colored yellow, white and red gold, alloyed from nine to twenty- two carat. All designs when worn create an allusion of perpetual movement, reflected through movements of the wearer. The structures capture and reflect the light to convey a sense of rhythm and spatial depth.

“Dan and I started working together on polymer clay in 1987. The first beads we made were done with an onlaying techniques, almost like painting with clay. We are both self-taught in regards to polymer clay and soon learned cane and millefiori work. Our work is influenced by ancient beads, particularly glass beads from Indonesia (Jatim beads) and China (Warring States Beads). Most of our jewelry pieces are combinations of Dan’s glass and my polymer clay beads. The mosaic work I have been doing over the past few years is inspired by old Italian glass mosaics of pins and buttons, and the incredible seed bead work of Huichol Indians. The versatility of polymer clay allows me an infinite variety of color choices and I spend hours making the tiny tiles I use in my mosaics. I am also interested in folk images whether on painting, textiles, or jewelry, and spend many hours researching for each mosaic bead.” Toops and Adams’ work is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Michelle received a BFA in jewelry and metalsmithing from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work was recently exhibited at Mobilia Gallery for the Jewelry from Architecture exhibition. She was nominated to be a part of the 2018 New York Jewelry Week One for the Future and participated in Milano Jewelry Week in 2019. Her work is held in the collections at Mobilia Gallery. “O’Connor has experimented with various forms of casting, including cuttlefish bone, which leaves a porous imprint on the metal. He also favors reticulation, a method of texturing metal by dusting it with minute particles of silver or gold and then heating the piece until the granules become part of the surface, and mokume, a Japanese technique of laminating metals to create a surface for repousse design. Uribe studied art at the University of Los Andes in Bogotá, and by 1988 he arrived in New York to pursue an MFA degree under the supervision of Luis Camnitzer. After receiving his degree, he left New York to study and work in Cuba, Mexico, Russia, England, and finally Miami. His artwork has been collected by and featured in multiple museums around North and South America. In this past year alone, Uribe’s work has been shown in Europe, Asia, and widely across the United States. Uribe participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale.

Barbara Seidenath was born and raised in Munich, Germany. She studied jewelry making at the State School for Glass and Jewelry in Neugablonz, Germany where she received a BFA in goldsmithing, followed by an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Seidenath has been on the teaching faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design for nearly three decades and is currently serving as Senior Critic. She also taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Tufts University in Boston and is a former faculty member of the Fine Arts 3D department at MassArt. She has taught many seminars and workshops in the U.S. and abroad and has had her work shown in international solo and group exhibitions. Seidenath's work is in the collection of the American Craft Museum, New York City; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Design Museum of Munich, Germany.

Jason Karolak is an abstract artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Rochester, MI in 1974, he received a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in 1997 and an MFA from School of Art Institute of Chicago in 2006. She studied at the Crawford School of Art in Cork and at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has completed two sculpture commissions for Lismore Castle in Waterford. Kevin Cyr received a BFA in illustration in 2000. His work was recently exhibited at Hashimoto Gallery, Alden Gallery, and Plastic Murs in Valencia, Spain. He has been awarded the West Prize and his work is held in the West Collection, as well as in Burton Snowboards’ art collection and the Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection. Dan Walsh studied at Philadelphia College of Art and Hunter College. Walsh explores perceptions of color and space through the use of linear, but irregular, geometric patterns. His juxtaposition and layering of color creates depths and volumes that cause his shapes to hover over or recede into the picture’s surface. His work has been exhibited in national and international galleries and institutions, including a retrospective at Paula Cooper Gallery, New York; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City. She is represented by Steven Zevitas Gallery, where her recent solo exhibition, The Weight of Ghosts was received with much critical acclaim. She is a two-time recipient of the Mass Cultural Council and the Berkshire Taconic ART grant. Her work is in the collections of Wellington Management, Fidelity, and Microsoft.

Richard Sennott is a picture editor of A New Light Archives at the GroundTruth Project. His assignments have taken him into conflicts in Bosnia, El Salvador, Iraq, Afghanistan and the West Bank. Sennott’s artful independent documentary work has earned him various awards in POYI, two McKnight Photography Fellowships, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism gold medal for photography. His work has been published in Life, Newsweek, Time Magazine, The New York Times and the National Geographic Traveler.

Elisa Tenenbaum received her MFA from the Hartford Art School. Her work was recently shown at the AONE National Exhibit at the Silvermine Guild, CT, Morpeth Contemporary in Hopewell, NJ, and at Stern Contemporary in Santa Fe, NM. She was the recipient of two CCSU Faculty Research Grants, and her work is in over 200 private and corporate collections.

Linda Gerry received her BA from Boston University in 1984 and MA from Boston College in 1991; she furthered her fine art training at The School for the Arts in Lucca, Italy and MassArt. Karen McCarthy received her BFA in fiber from MassArt. Her work was recently exhibited at Attleboro Arts Museum, Arlington Center for the Arts, and Gallery Twist. Her work is in the collections of Babson College, Fidelity Investments, Meditech, and many other public and private collections across the US.

Tim received his BFA in interdisciplinary arts from the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He has shown nationally and internationally and has been included in many juried exhibitions, awarded and published. Donovan’s work is soulful, exploratory and pertinent. His photographs explore the suggestion that he look closer at his internal and external environment. His portraits, installations, poetry and mixed media allow him to take that act of consideration, decipher it and then produce tangible work that may allow greater clarity.

Martha Friedman received a BA in fine arts from Brandeis University. Her work is exhibited at the AWA Gallery in Brookline, MA. She has received a Mass. Professional Development Grant and Women’s Studio Workshop Artist Fellowship. Her work is held in the collections of Biogen, Fidelity Investments, Waite and Company, the law offices of Goodwin, Proctor and Hoar and numerous private collections.

Mimi Smith received a BFA from MassArt, and an MFA from Rutgers. Her grants include NEA, NYSCA, NYFA, and Joan Mitchell grants. She received the MassArt Distinguished Alumni Award 2016, and Estelle Lebowitz endowed artist Rutgers 2018. Her work was recently exhibited at the Zimmerli, Fuller Craft, and Newark Museums. Her work was recently exhibited at Student Life and Godine Gallery at MassArt and she will have a solo exhibition at Godine Gallery.

Anne Smith Stephan has studied at Northwestern University, the Art Institute of Chicago and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barat College in Lake Forest, IL. Her work was recently exhibited at Vivid Art Gallery as the featured artist for the month of September. She has taught portraiture and oil painting at the Evanston Art Center. Her work is in many collections around the country.

Nancy McCarthy’s recent exhibitions include shows at There Gallery, NYC.
