Thank you for joining us at the 30th Anniversary MassArt Auction. Massachusetts College of Art and Design is a public, independent institution that prepares artists, designers, and educators from diverse backgrounds to shape communities, grow economies, and work creatively for the common good.

Thanks to the success of our recent UNBOUND Campaign, renovations are underway in the Bakalar and Paine Galleries. We can’t wait for you to see them when they re-open next winter to serve our local, regional, and global communities as Boston’s largest free museum of contemporary art. This year, we welcome you to the MassArt Auction in the College’s Design and Media Center, a state-of-the-art facility that opened in January 2016. The Auction has a new look in a new space but the exceptional artwork you know to expect from this event remains the same. We challenge you to not find something that doesn’t enchant and inspire you. Thirty years ago, the original idea for this auction began in the College’s Fine Arts 2D department, then under the direction of Professor Emeritus Dean Nimmer. Over the years, the size of the Auction has grown exponentially, due significantly to this year’s Honorary Chairperson Pat Stavaridis. A former Boston gallery owner, MassArt Foundation Board member, and Director of Communications for the school, Pat envisioned the Auction’s potential to build a community of support for the College. With pride and gratitude for Dean’s and Pat’s foresight, we follow their lead in supporting the vital, fresh, cutting-edge work being done by our committed students. Today, the Auction is MassArt’s largest annual fundraiser.

Founded in 1873, Mass Art proudly stands as the only public college of visual arts in the continental United States, and has been growing, learning, and leading for 146 years. MassArt is dedicated to providing academic excellence and a rigorous professional education to the next generation of artists, designers, and educators. We are committed to making this education as accessible as possible to our students, regardless of their financial situation. You’ll be interested to learn that:

• Approximately 1 in 5 MassArt students are first generation college students.

• More than half of our students work at least 16 hours a week to help fund their education.

• More than 91% of our students rely on scholarships and financial aid from the college. That support is possible due in large part to the money raised at tonight’s event.

• MassArt ranks 29th out of 600+ 4-year public institutions around the country with the highest retention rate for first-time students, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. This ranking is due in large part to the amount of financial support we are able to provide to our students. We can’t thank all of YOU enough—sponsors, artists, gallery partners, ticket buyers, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and volunteers—for joining us in making this year’s Auction possible.

Auction Guidelines

BEFORE THE AUCTION

Preview auction artwork at paddle8.com/auction/ massart starting Friday, March 29, 2019 through Friday April 12 at noon EST Starting noon EST April 12th and running through noon EST on Friday, April 26th, bids may be placed on either Live or Silent Auction lots.

AT THE AUCTION / CHECK-IN

During check-in, guests will receive bidder numbers when they provide a valid credit card or leave a signed blank check at the registration table. Bidder numbers will not be issued unless either a credit card or a check is provided. This will ensure prompt payment of all artwork and Raise Your Paddle donations. If you registered to come with a guest other than your spouse/partner, your guest will have to register for his or her own bidder number unless you have requested otherwise.

To expedite your check-in process, contact Fundraising Events Coordinator Helen Zhang at 617.879.7014 to attach a credit card to your bidder number before the Auction.

SILENT AUCTION BIDDING

There are three Silent Auction sections that will close in twenty-minute intervals upon completion of the Live Auction. Each item offered in the Silent Auction will have a bid sheet posted adjacent to it. To place a bid, write your bidder number on the sheet opposite the amount you wish to bid. Please place bids according to the minimum increments posted on the bid sheet; any bid not in the proper increment will be disqualified. You may bid on any item in the Silent Auction until the section is closed. At the posted closing time a Silent Auction Captain will collect the bid sheets and determine the winning bid for each item. If you are the winning bidder at the close of the Silent Auction section, your bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. In the event of a dispute over a Silent Auction bid, the Executive Director of Advancement will determine the winning bid and the decision will be final.

BUY NOW OPTION

Any Silent Auction lot may be purchased outright by paying 150% of its stated value. Artwork may be purchased at any time during the Auction by placing your bidder number on the Buy Now line of the artwork’s bid sheet. Once the Buy Now line on a bid sheet has been filled in, the work is considered sold. Bid sheets will remain adjacent to the work until the section is closed. The Buy Now option is available during the Opening Reception on Monday, April 22 and during the Public Preview Days on April 23–25 and to online bidders at paddle8.com/auction/massart from April 12 through April 26 at noon EST

The Live Auction will begin at 8:00PM and continue without breaks until all items have sold. To bid in the Live Auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing the Auctioneer. The highest bid acknowledged by the Auctioneer constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item by that bidder.

RAISE YOUR PADDLE

Raise Your Paddle is our annual appeal for outright contributions to our student scholarship fund. Your gift, of any amount, will help MassArt remain affordable and accessible. Gifts made through Raise Your Paddle are outright donations and are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

BUYER’S PREMIUM

A buyer’s premium equal to 10% of the winning bid will be applied to each lot sold and will be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. A buyer’s premium will not be applied to any pledge(s) made during the Live Auction’s Raise Your Paddle fundraising opportunity.

SALES TAX

All artwork purchases are subject to Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption certificates from other states will be accepted if presented with a business card or on letterhead. All certificates must be presented during guest check-in.

PAYMENT

Cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express will be accepted as payment. All purchases are final and must be paid for on the evening of the Auction. No exchanges or refunds will be allowed.

ARTWORK PICK-UP / DELIVERY

To ensure the safety of all artwork, NO ARTWORK WILL BE WRAPPED TO TAKE HOME THE NIGHT OF THE AUCTION. After paying for your purchases at the check-out station, please make arrangements at the pick-up/delivery station through one of the following options:

1. Pick up work in the Design and Media Center on Wednesday, May 1 or Thursday, May 2, 4:00–7:00PM; or

2. Have work delivered to your home in the Metro Boston area*; or

3. Have work professionally shipped at the expense of the purchaser.

The Office of Fundraising Events will contact buyers to confirm pick-up/delivery arrangement in the weeks following the Auction.

The values listed are estimates of fair market values. Items have not been appraised by the MassArt Foundation. Each person (bidder) issued a bid card assumes all risks and hazards related to the items obtained at the Auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising there from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design Foundation, its employees, the event organizers, sponsors, and volunteers connected with the Auction. Emma Amos (b. 1937) is a distinguished painter and printmaker. She was the youngest and only woman member of Spiral, the historic African American collective founded in 1963, as well as a member of the important feminist collective, Heresies, founded in the 1980s. Amos graduated from Antioch College in Ohio in 1958 and the Central School of Art in London in 1960. In 1965, she earned her Masters in Arts from New York University and still lives and works in Manhattan. Her work is held in the collections of the British Museum, London; Bronx Museum of Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and Yale University Art Gallery, among others. In 2016 Amos received Georgia Museum of Art’s Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson prize, and Studio Museum in Harlem honored her as an Icon, along with Faith Ringgold and Lorraine O’Grady.

William Wegman was born in 1943 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He received a BFA in painting from MassArt in 1965 and an MFA in painting from the University of Illinois, ChampagneUrbana in 1967. In Long Beach Wegman got his Weimaraner who he named Man Ray, and began a long and fruitful collaboration. Man Ray, known in the art world and beyond for his endearing deadpan presence, became a central figure in Wegman’s photographs and videos. Numerous retrospectives of Wegman’s work have toured Europe, Asia and the United States. Recent museum exhibitions include Japan, Korea, and Spain and numerous gallery exhibitions. Elizabeth Peyton is a contemporary American painter best known for her intimate, small-scale portraits of celebrities, friends, and historical figures. Ed Ruscha was born on December 16, 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska. His family moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1941. In 1956, Ruscha moved to Los Angeles, where he attended Chouinard Art Institute, from which he graduated in 1960. Ruscha’s early paintings attracted notice as part of the Pop art movement of the 1960s; his art also has antecedents in Dada, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism, and would be central to Conceptual art. David Hilliard uses his unique, multi-paneled technique to produce expansive photographs, both figuratively and literally. The multiple panels act as short films; a single work captures the passage of time before our very eyes. Although Hilliard’s photography illustrates his own personal tensions, loves, fears and desires, they remain universally evocative. Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly was introduced to glass at the University of Washington. After graduating, Chihuly enrolled in the first glass program in the country, at the University of Wisconsin. He continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he later established the glass program and taught for more than a decade. In 1968, after receiving a Fulbright Fellowship, he went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice. There he observed the team approach to blowing glass, which is critical to the way he works today. In 1971, Chihuly co-founded Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. His work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. He has been the recipient of many awards, including two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and twelve honorary doctorates.

Ernest Tino Trova (American, 1927–2009) was a selftaught painter and sculptor, most famous for his Falling Man series. Born in a town just outside St. Louis, Trova lived his entire life in Missouri. In the 1960s, Trova created his first Falling Man: an armless, featureless figure that he repeatedly depicted in paintings and sculptures in a variety of configurations.

Trova’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Gallery, among others.

Geoff Hargadon is a conceptual artist and photographer from Somerville, MA. His current project, Cash For Your Warhol, was featured at Pulse Miami in 2011, was the subject of a solo exhibition at Montserrat College of Art, and has been collected by a number of institutions, including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. CFYW is Hargadon’s take on art-as-commodity, a reference to the financial crisis and the ubiquitous signage that responded to it. The signs are screen-printed on corrugated plastic, the exact materials used by others trying to buy houses, cars, and gold—deliberately designed to create an ambiguous message when installed on the street. Hargadon is also the creator of The Somerville Gates (2005).

Liliana Porter works in various mediums including printmaking, works on canvas, photography, video, installations and public art projects. Porter was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1980, three New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships (1985, 1996, 1999), the Mid Atlantic/NEA Regional Fellowship (1994) and seven PSC- CUNY research awards (from 1994 to 2004).

Porter was a professor at Queens College, City University of New York, from 1991 to 2007. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally and is represented in many public and private collections.

Susan completed a three-year program in contemporary art at France’s École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1987 and studied realism at Tehran’s Petgar Painting Academy in 1987. John Gibson is fascinated with representing three dimensional spheres on two dimensional surfaces through his paintings of still lives with balls. Gibson adds motifs to his spherical forms, further complicating their three dimensional descriptions. The artist cites Morandi as a strong influence in his repetitive practice of painting vases, each new work offering an opportunity to perfect the form. Paul Henry Ramirez coined the term “biogeomorphic abstrac tion” to describe his own bold style, a fusion of biomorphic and geometric forms. Ramirez’s site-specific installations were first featured in New York City’s Drawing Center, Clock Tower Gallery and Franklin Furnace. Ramirez has had numerous solo exhibitions, including the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH; the Whitney Museum at Altria; and the Tang Museum. In 2010 he was created a major installation for the Newark Museum. Elizabeth Catlett was an African-American artist who explored themes relating to race and feminism in her range of sculpture, paintings, and prints. She was awarded a scholarship to attend the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh—only to have the offer rescinded on the basis of her race. She then enrolled at Howard University and went on to study under Grant Wood at the University of Iowa, becoming the first African-American woman to graduate with an MFA from the school. In the 1940s, she traveled to Mexico on a fellowship and began to paint murals influenced by the work of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

Brice Marden was born in 1938 in Bronxville, NY. He attended Florida Southern College and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. Mary Kocol’s photography has received acclaim for its transformation of ordinary domestic and street scenes. In addition to her medium format work, Kocol shoots with a plastic lens toy camera, producing images in which she uses the camera’s imperfections and its vagaries of focus. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1993, Kocol was awarded a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.

Jim Dine is an American artist and poet known for his contributions to the formation of both Performance Art and Pop Art. Born in 1935 in Cincinnati, OH, he studied poetry at the University of Cincinnati before attending the University of Ohio where he received his BFA in 1957. Dine became part of a milieu of artists which included Allan Kaprow and Claes Oldenburg, with whom he began to stage performances which later became known as “Happenings.” By the early 1960s, he had switched his focus to painting, drawing on his interest in popular imagery and commercial objects. Dine currently lives and works in New York and Walla Walla, WA. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, NY; Tate Modern in London; Bilbao Fine Arts Museum; and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.

Robert Cottingham studied advertising and graphic design at Pratt Institute in New York. Soon after graduating, he was employed as an art director at New York and Los Angeles advertising agencies. His first solo exhibition took place at the Molly Barnes Gallery in Los Angeles in 1968. He moved to London in 1972 and returned to the United States in 1976 after running out of photographs—the primary visual material he uses in his paintings. He considered his urban subjects purely American and would not consider a visual substitute.

Cottingham has taught at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and the National Academy of Design in New York City. He now lives and works, paradoxically, on an eighteenth century farm in Newtown, Connecticut.

Best known for his 1960s series Great American Nude, which featured flat figures in an intense palette of red, white, blue, and other patriotic colors, Wesselmann, in an effort to reject Abstract Expressionism, made collages and assemblages that incorporated everyday objects and advertising ephemera. In the early 1980s, he produced his first “Metal Works,” in which he shaped canvases and cut metal to create abstract threedimensional images. In his final years, Wesselmann returned to the female form in the “Sunset Nudes” series, where the compositions, abstract imagery, and sanguine moods recall the odalisques of Henri Matisse.

YoAhn Han received his MFA at MassArt and his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Recent solo shows include My Princess, Bari at ARTMORA Gallery in New York. His work has recently shown in Summer Palette at Chase Young Gallery in Boston. In 2018, his work was shown at Essex Art Center at Lawrence, MA.

Cynthia is a continuation of an artistic lineage. Her great grandfather, Max Bohm, was a respected turn of the century Impressionist painter, and her mother, Anne Packard, is a widely collected landscape artist. Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Packard came to Provincetown in 1980 after graduating with an honors degree in sculpture from MassArt. She studied with the late Fritz Bultman, began to paint and found herself addicted to color, brushwork and the human form. Recently her work has exploded reaching new levels. Born in Chicago, Barbara Grad received both her BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. For many years she was an active member of Chicago’s contemporary art scene as a founding member of the Artemisia Gallery. An accomplished artist and distinguished educator, Grad is a Professor Emeritus, Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Recent solo exhibitions include The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO; The Danforth Museum of Art in Framingham, MA; and Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston. In high school, Phillip Jones won a Sears Foundation scholarship to study with Gene Davis. He then studied at the Corcoran School of Art, Antioch College, and Cooper Union. In 1973, his short film Secrets won numerous awards and was exhibited at the Whitney and Hirschhorn Museums. More recently, Jones has exhibited at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Fuller Craft Museum, Boston Athenaeum, Boston Public Library, Boston Center for the Arts, Photographic Resource Center, Garner Center, and the Mercury and Anzenberger Galleries. Joan Drew Ritchings (1916–2002) was born in Indiana, and in 1938 graduated from the Massachusetts School of Art and Design. Drew studied painting at the studio of Elsa Schmid for two years. She won a scholarship to the Arts Student League in New York City, where she studied with Harry Sternberg and Arnold Singer. Drew shared her studio with two owls and founded Gray Moose Press.
