MASTER OF FINE ARTS

FILM / VIDEO The Massachusetts College of Art and Design offers a full-time, two-year (60-credit) MFA in Film/Video. This intimate, rigorous program provides a unique learning environment for students seeking to develop as creative artists working with the moving image. Students are encouraged to experiment and probe, both conceptually and formally, across a broad spectrum of film, video, installation, and

new media. In tandem with elective courses, the core curriculum is designed to give students the conceptual tools and technical training they require to deepen and expand their work as 21st century professional artists and critical thinkers. The Graduate Major Studio course rotates among members of our internationally recognized faculty, exposing students to diverse approaches and expertise in experimental, non-fiction, narrative and installation-based moving image work. This core class focuses on critiques of student work, screenings, discussions of theoretical and contemporary issues in the moving image, as well as meetings with visiting artists and critics. SOON-MI YOO, PROFESSOR, FILM/VIDEO DEPARTMENT CHAIR The films of Soon-Mi Yoo embrace and expand avant-garde and essayistic modes of non-fiction cinema. Her films have screened in prestigious festivals, cinematheques and museums around the world including the Toronto International Film Festival, Oberhausen, New York Film Festival, the Viennale, Centre Pompidou, and National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Her latest feature film Songs From the North was awarded the prestigious Golden Leopard for Best First Feature at the 2014 Locarno Film Festival, as well as the Jury Prize at the Buenos Aires International Film Festival.

Soon-Mi Yoo

ERICKA BECKMAN, PROFESSOR Over her three-decade career, Ericka Beckman’s playful yet formally demanding films have challenged traditional aesthetic and cultural values. Her work merges games with fairy tales to create hybrids with new rules. Beckman’s work has been shown at festivals, museums, and galleries around the world. Her one-woman shows include: Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland, Le Magasin, Grenoble, France, the Tate Modern, London, MOCA, Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the MIT List Center, Boston.

Ericka Beckman

GRETCHEN SKOGERSON, PROFESSOR Gretchen Skogerson is a New York-based video and installation artist. She is best known for pristine, coolly minimalist work that deals with the intersection of aloneness and togetherness within the chaos of modern life. Her recent projects explore cultural misogyny and racism, and use re-creation and horror as modes of inquiry. Her work has been shown widely, including at the Whitney Biennial, the New York Film Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, and the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA.

TAMMY DUDMAN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Tammy Marie Dudman, who exhibits under the name T. Marie, is a trans-disciplinary, time-based media artist. Her works have screened and exhibited at a range of international venues and festivals. T. Marie was awarded a Radcliffe-Harvard Film Studies Fellowship, where she was supported for her pioneering work with moving images. In 2014, while at Radcliffe, T. Marie launched her first solo exhibition, Liminal Pixels, and had a public presentation of her work at the Harvard Film Archive. 3

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES All graduate students in Film/Video have access to our firstrate facilities, including analog film and digital video cameras, audio recording equipment, sound and lighting studios, 360 cameras and VR headsets, professional editing and finishing stations and software, 16mm Steenbeck reel-to-reel editors, a handmade film lab, Kinetta archival scanner, and an optical printer and Oxberry animation stand. In addition, all MFA students have the use of personal studio spaces (private or shared), for the duration of their program of study.

TIME GRADUATE STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A RANGE OF PAID ON-CAMPUS TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTSHIPS. OFF-CAMPUS INTERNSHIPS ARE ENCOURAGED, AND FILM/VIDEO GRAD STUDENTS MAY APPLY FOR PAID POSITIONS THAT CAN ALSO EARN CREDIT, DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR AND THE SUMMER BREAK. GRADUATE STUDENTS ARE ALSO AFFORDED A VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO EXHIBIT THEIR WORK BOTH ON AND OFFCAMPUS, IN GROUP SHOWS AND WITH THEIR GRADUATING COHORT IN THEIR FINAL THESIS EXHIBITION.

EACH SEMESTER, THE MASSART CINÉ CULTURE SCREENING SERIES BRINGS TO CAMPUS A DIVERSE GROUP OF INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED DIRECTORS AND MOVING IMAGE ARTISTS TO SCREEN AND DISCUSS THEIR WORK.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Samantha Alder de Oliveira, MFA ‘16

Samantha Adler de Oliveira earned her MassArt MFA as a Fulbright scholar in 2017. As a graduate student, she began to experiment with analog film techniques, creating a series of stark, haunting video loops collectively titled Spinning Glass. These 3D-rendered animations were re-shot on 16mm film,

Museum as part of EPOS International Art Festival and at Italy’s Faito Doc festival. The film was produced under the mentorship of MassArt Film/ Video department chair Soon-Mi Yoo. Of her experience in the Film/Video MFA program, Samantha says: “Soon-Mi guided me through the development of my thesis film and encouraged me to constantly dig deeper. MassArt allowed me to deepen my theoretical understanding of the moving image and to enhance my technical experience within this vast medium. I am particularly grateful for the support of dedicated teachers who are themselves contemporary art practitioners.”
