FIGURATIVE SERIES

Mashian’s Abstract Figurative Series is her most personal and is an homage to the dichotomies of what it means to be feminine: soft and bold, fluid and stalwart, vulnerable and invincible. Her approach to the feminine form evolves from symbolist collage to a modern interpretation of the feminine figure. Mashian’s work with live models ignited the Femme series, addressing the universal themes of feminine fortitude and fierceness, and at the same time is the latest configuration celebrating the female form a subject of myriad artworks since the age of antiquity

“The figurative images of women are lush and highly textured – like all of the work here, they are mixed media paintings, large and yet intimate, layered with resin, glitter, gels, fabric, paper, jewels, and beads; or as Mashian describes her work, “Whatever moves me. I wanted all of them to be in a jewel tone because…of the richness of being a woman. We have a lot going for us.”

– Haleh Mashian: Meditative Magic, Diversions LA

Mashian’s multi-layered approach to her canvases involves acrylic paint applied and re-applied, scraped off and re-added, with the inclusion of an array of materials to render a physicality to her surfaces. As a result, Mashian’s feminine figures reflect both a defined presence and a phantasmagoric reverie that emphasize how women are adept at inhabiting multiple spaces, varied lives, and an amalgam of identities.

Mashian’s process of technique divulges the inherent fluidity in the nature of the feminine, juxtaposing the constant duality of woman’s quintessence: the soft and the bold, the flexible and the stalwart, the vulnerable and the invincible.

“Creativity is my

Mashian shares, as she describes the act of creating derives from a divine consciousness, which is akin to what psychologists call “flow:” a mental state of deep creativity and complete immersion in the task at hand In a flow state, one is completely present and open to the act of creating. Mashian, coupled with a daily practice of mindful meditation, enters this creative state frequently in her creative process, whether it’s painting, designing, dancing or through music.

Recently expanding into sculpture and three-dimensional art, she is incorporating LED light, plaster, and other materials that bring her pieces to life. Her love of interior design has also led to an exploration of the digital realm. NFTs, fashion, and furniture manifest her artful vision of living and her belief that art - physical and digital - sculpture, fashion, and interior design can all be seamlessly combined to create a sublime and expressive lifestyle.

Four years ago, Mashian founded Mash Gallery, which has become a hub for creativity and community to thrive under one roof. She aims to celebrate art for the sake of art, not just because it's a commodity As a curator, Mashian strives to be the bridge between the energy and soul of a piece of art and the viewers and community.

Haleh Mashian studied art at various institutions such as UCLA, Otis and Brentwood Art Center, as well as earning a Bachelor of Science degree from USC. Originally from Iran, she is a longtime resident of Southern California with a studio in Santa Monica, where she lives with her husband and two children. Her art is an expression of her unique vision of the world and her continuous exploration of new artistic territories.
