about AWARxE

AWARxE was founded by the Minnesota Pharmacists Foundation believing pharmacists have a critical role in providing medication safety information and helping raise awareness of the dangers of abusing and misusing medications.

AWARxE was inspired by the death of St. Cloud, MN resident Justin Pearson. Justin passed away on Christmas Day, 2006 from an overdose of prescription drugs, which he ordered online and obtained from pharmacies around the country, including at least one in Minnesota.

• Inform parents and children of prescription drug misuse and abuse dangers. • Inform people of safe and proper medication disposal options. • Alert parents and children of the danger of online pharmacies. Let people know there is a chance they could be getting counterfeit medications. • Help people understand the importance of their relationship with their pharmacist in obtaining their prescription drugs. • Address the public perception gap – medicine is more than a commodity and individuals must take personal responsibility for their health care.

AWARxE is a call to action! Consumers need to take action to Get Informed on both the benefits and risks that medications have, how to use medicines safely, and the dangers of abusing prescription and OTC medications.


Accomplishments:

April 2008: Created logo and look of campaign. October 2008: Launched AWARxE website www.awarerx.org. March – November 2008: Recruited and informed student pharmacists. February – October 2009: Recruited national licensee. October 2009: NABP became national licensee. Phase 2 marketing began. March 2010 – Present: Statewide donated advertising. Received approx. $2.5mil in advertising or commitments on TV, radio, billboards and other media. August 2010: Sent letter to prospective schools regarding school presentations for the first time. September 2010: Seeking sponsors for statewide ad campaign. May 2011: Gave 100 presentations to 15 schools affecting over 2,500 students in the 2010-2011 school year. August 2011: Sent letter to prospective schools regarding school presentations with the goal of presenting to 25 schools in year 2. September 2011: Partnered with HealthPartners and Target.
