Choose a career with City College S

EPTEMBER is an exciting time, whether you are heading back to school or starting something new at college or university. For some, however, the pleasures of catching up with old friends or starting a new course can quickly turn sour. What do you do if you don’t want to stay in school or if your course isn’t what you had hoped it would be? If you are 16 or over and unhappy in your education or career choice, then it’s not too late to make a change. You can still apply for a full-time study programme or apprenticeship at City College. Mike Jones, Employability and Enterprise Manager at City College, leads an expert team of careers and education advisors. He says: “We see many young people taking the bold step of saying ‘no this is not for me’ and turning to us for free, impartial advice. As a professional, vocation-

al and technical college, we offer courses to suit a wide range of interests, from construction to catering, business to beauty and science to sport. “Courses start from entry-level right through to university-level degrees, and you don’t need to have a GCSE in English and maths to apply as you can study these as part of your study programme at the college. “There is a lot of misinformation out there. For example, you don’t have to stay in school until you’re 18, like most people think. “College courses and apprenticeships are great alternatives to school-based education and can set you on the path to further study or a great career.” If you are interested in making a fresh start, then City College is offering free and impartial careers advice and guidance every Wednesday throughout September, from 4.30-6.30pm, at Kings Road. Visit cityplym.ac.uk/events for more information.

Plympton Academy students have a real love of learning

P

LYMPTON Academy believes in inspiring a culture of success for all. Its ethos centres around developing a love of learning and a resilience and determination to tackle all the challenges that students will meet. In this way, students become successful and fulfilled life-long lear ners. A spokesperson said: “Our students are

involved in every aspect of the academy life beyond the classroom; extra-curricular clubs and trips are always available but our students also take an active role in shaping the future of the Academy “Our students leave this academy as rounded, confident, independent young adults, equipped to take pride in their achievements and pursue their dreams.”

Warm welcome at Notre Dame “Outcomes for pupils are now good, especially in the newly redesigned two-year Key Stage 3. In mathematics and modern foreign languages, outcome are particularly strong across the academy” – OFSTED, January 2016

N Plympton Academy helps students to become successful and fulfilled life-long learners

OTRE Dame is Plymouth’s only comprehensive school for girls. Part of a worldwide network of schools founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame, this is a Catholic school that welcomes all those who want to learn in a supportive, caring and aspirational environment. Notre Dame was judged by Ofsted in its latest inspection as being a ‘Good’ school, and a Diocesan Inspection rated it as ‘Outstanding’. Girls from across Plymouth and beyond enjoy what the inspectors recognised as a ‘very strong family and faith atmo-

sphere’ and are supported in their progress because ‘relationships between teachers and students are excellent’. This, together with ‘excellent spiritual, moral, social and cultural development’, means Notre Dame students are ready to make the most of their futures. Whatever their plans, Notre Dame girls are prepared because of the school’s focus on education of the whole child: ‘head, heart and hands’. PLYMOUTH-based company that has provided quality training and connected thousands of apprentices with firms in the region over the past 17 years, has expanded to cover more sectors of business and industry. Focus Training (SW) Ltd was set up in 1999 to serve the professional and leadership sector, as well as the retail, health and social care, hospitality and service industries. The company is now launching its new name, ‘The Focus Training Group’, to reflect its growth into electrical, plumbing, gas and arboriculture training and apprenticeships. The four parts of the new-look group are the original Focus Training (professional trades) DCET Training (electrical), the newly-established Arb Academy (tree surgery and forestry), and Super Tech (plumbing and gas). With up to 100 per cent funding from Government schemes available, Group recruitment and mar-

keting manager Shelly Wright says there’s never been a better time to consider an apprenticeship. She said: “They are currently fully-funded for 16- 18-year-olds, with the possibility of employer incentives and at least part-funded and in some cases fully-funded for people who are 19 and over. “That applies to mature apprentices, too, so people shouldn’t think that they’ve missed out just because they’re over 18.” Of the 60 staff at the group’s five bases in the South West, 35 are tutors / trainer assessors, all with backgrounds in the fields they are teaching in, and the quality offered by the group is recognised with a ‘Good’ ranking from the education standards watchdog, Ofsted and Matrix. There are 1,000 apprentices on the group’s books at any given time, with, on average, 20 new apprentices starting each month just on the Focus side – and that number is likely to increase.

ELE’S is a school with a tradition of academic excellence, high aspirations and a big heart. A spokesperson said: “Hele’s is a school we are all proud to attend, a school where we never compromise on our insistence that everyone is valued, learns, enjoys and achieves. “Expectations for staff and students are high, but very simple; work hard to both do things right and to do the right thing… even when no one is looking! “Everything we do is shaped by our determination to ensure that each and every child has a positive and memorable experience of school; that they thrive, flourish and, crucially, are happy. “In return, we expect students to play an active role in making our school a great place to be through displaying the highest standards of commitment to learning, pride and care. Our inclusive, calm, purposeful learning environment is often cited as a strength of the school, as is the quality of pastoral care and of our challenging curriculum. “Students have many opportunities to enrich their learning, to discover new skills and interests, and to master others through engaging in a breadth of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, wherever their interests or aspirations may lie. “The Combined Cadet Force plays a key role in the life of Hele’s, and both outdoor education and leadership development is at the heart of much that we do. Why a Catholic school?

“ The Catholic Church sees parents as the ‘primary educators’ of their own children and sees the role of the school as the key support to those parents in fulfilling that responsibility”

Learning for life

The Catholic Church has been providing education for children and young people since well before the UK government provided ‘state education’. We are proud of our Catholic school tradition in Plymouth with Notre Dame recently celebrating their 150th anniversary. Our six Primary and two Secondary schools within the city are growing in their popularity and in their academic standards; they admit pupils of every denomination and faith as well as those whose families have no particular faith affiliation. So why are our schools popular with families of different faith backgrounds? It is because a Catholic School focuses on the values that so many seek in a quality education: excellent academic results, building of character, social responsibility and a sound moral outlook – nurtured in a safe, caring community where your child is accepted, respected and never lost in the crowd.

Pupils of Notre Dame Catholic school

The Catholic Church sees parents as the ‘primary educators’ of their own children and sees the role of the school as the key support to those parents in fulfilling that responsibility. Thus, in a Catholic School you will find the closest co-operation and partnership between parents and their child’s teachers. At the heart of all Catholic schools is the commitment to the development of the whole person and to ensure that all children grow fully into people who can engage with the world and fully participate as mature and responsible adults. These values and aspirations are not only shared by Catholic families, which is why so many others also choose to send their children to Catholic Schools, regardless of the faith background of the family home. Indeed, it is a key characteristic of Catholic education to recognise and respect diversity. So while the overall environment, values and practices of Catholic schools reflect a consistent Catholic tradition, their goal is not to ‘convert’; members of our school communities, adults and young people, are not expected to act in any ways that might compromise their own faith tradition. Nonetheless, we do believe that all children have a great potential for spirituality as well as for physical, academic and moral development. As a result, mindfulness and prayerfulness, music and liturgy, charitable activities and mutual care are all important parts of the broad experience of Catholic education. Many of those who are the biggest supporters of Catholic schools are those who are not themselves Catholics but have experienced our schools as a pupil or parent. It is also the case that people who have a strong faith themselves but are not Catholics or not Christians speak highly about how their own

HEN you are considering which schools to look at for your children, you are going to hear lots about how each school puts its pupils first and how dedicated to academic success they are. It will be tricky to assess what these statements really mean for you and your family. A spokesperson said: “When you start to explore Lipson Co-operative Academy, we think that you will find this really is a school which holds each and every child centre stage. Not only that, you will find the underlying ethos is one of shared co-operative values producing happy, confident learners who are enjoying the fruits of their success. “We would be delighted if you would come and visit us and experience for yourself what we mean when we say we hold mutual respect, equality, responsibility, honesty, openness, democracy and care at our heart, each and every day. “We know you will be impressed when you see the results we are achieving by working in this way. The school’s commissioner recently highlighted the value-added performance as being in the top four in the country, and praised the principal and our energetic staff. “At Lipson, our learners become part of a family, not just a school. This is a family

environment in which everyone has a voice and where everyone is valued as an individual, but expected to make a worthwhile contribution to that family. On a daily basis, we are sharing with our young people our commitment to saying, ‘we instead of me’. “Another aspect of our family environment is the use of innovative Guilds, which pupils join after consultation whilst they are still at primary school. Every pupil is part of a Guild; each one has a specialist focus. “Children who are nervous at starting a new school, are supported by a pastoral system right from day one. Whether our learners are studying for academic or vocational qualifications, Lipson’s passion for its values encourages teachers to give children dedicated and timely feedback at all stages of their work, with personalised plans and support to make improvements. “These same energetic teachers handle modest class sizes, with good levels of pastoral and support staff. Our continued investment in the school’s facilities is paying off in improving success rates and recognition of our good practice. “We look forward to welcoming you to one of our open events: our ‘open evening’ on September 13, from 6.30-8.30pm, or ‘open afternoon on September 22, from 2.15-4.30pm.
