• THE PROMISE • THE OFFER • OUR PLEDGE

We will provide you with an education filled with experiences to last a lifetime. On field trips and through environmental education you will see, smell, and taste things that you never dreamed existed. You will learn skills that will land you jobs and some that will become hobbies. You will play sports, dance, sing and laugh. You will be safe in our home, because it was built to be your home, too. You will learn about other cultures and about your own rich culture, knowledge you can pass to your children one day when you are gown up and if you decide to have them. You will attend a private school where you will stay until you are eighteen years old. We will provide tutors and academic assistance along the way. If you are committed to going to college we will help you to get there. You will learn languages to enable you to communicate with people from around the world. You will serve your community and communities with people you do not know. You will march for peace, for change, and for justice for all. You will be a leader who commands respect. We understand that if your teeth ache or your mother is ill or your siblings are hungry you may not be present, and you need to be present, both physically and mentally. Therefore we will make sure you receive health care and learn to advocate for your health and wellness. If your family needs assistance, financial or emotional, we promise we will look for resources to help them, so that they will also remain determined to help you break the cycle of poverty by receiving a quality education that was not offered to them. We recognize that you cannot do it alone, none of us ever have. Our wings are fashioned by many hands.

• THE KNOW

• THE ASK

You began your life many miles behind the starting line, and that was not fair. But this has given you a better understanding of how to be compassionate and patient and we trust you will use this compassion and patience to help others who may stumble or need the wisdom of someone who has had to overcome so many obstacles. You will remain committed and will not give up. You may get used to hearing no, but you will never accept it when it is about your well-being or your own dreams or the well-being and dreams of your community, since we don’t belong to ourselves alone.

To achieve these goals, you must show up. You must contribute your time and devotion. Dream big, work hard. You must never forget your cradle, where you came from and that you will share your knowledge and love with all that you come into contact with. You will care for your mother earth and for your mother who birthed you as well as the many mothers and fathers who helped raise you. You will be proud and remain a reader, a problem solver, and a good communicator. You will never stop trying. You will not condone violence or discrimination in any form or intentionally hurt others. You will not judge others as we did not raise you to be judges but to be peacemakers. You will teach others to love the earth and the sea and the air. You are a Mariposa. Your wings were fashioned by many hands. Use them to soar.

Seguirás comprometida y no te rendirás.

our MISSION

our VISION

WE CREATE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TO END GENERATIONAL POVERTY BY EDUCATING AND EMPOWERING GIRLS AND INSPIRING THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO JOIN THE GLOBAL MOVEMENT

TO CREATE A MODEL THAT CAN BE ADAPTED AROUND THE WORLD FOR A HOLISTIC GIRLS’ EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM TO END GENERATIONAL POVERTY.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

If a picture paints a thousand words, Yonna’s on the front cover captures the essence of all we do with her powerful pose. We know that girls are the most powerful force for change and I have spent hours explaining to friends and donors why we are investing so heavily in the education and empowerment of girls. Ten years ago I was asked to describe what an empowered girl looked like and how we would measure empowerment. At the time it was hard to know what all that meant, but after 10 years of working with girls it has become clear that empowerment and confidence are sisters. If a girl is a confident reader, swimmer, dancer, mathematician, chess player, musician, surfer or friend she is empowered. For this reason our compassionate guides and mentors look for at least two things that our girls love to do and we help them achieve their goals and thus gain confidence. This ultimately empowers them to be the best of themselves they can be. On the journey they meet many kind people and some that are not so kind. We know that kindness is more important than being right. We problem solve together, we support each other and the power of this support and our family of butterflies just keeps growing. As we celebrate another amazing year, thank you for being there on our journey. It could never happen without you all, who understand that a girl truly is the most powerful force for change.

With gratitude,

Patricia Thorndike Suriel Executive Director, Mariposa DR Foundation

ECO-BRICK COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT

Our eco-bottle brick community outreach project was an incredible success on so many levels! The Mariposa Environmental Activism group lead discussions in the local school and in their neighborhoods about how to create the bottle bricks and why the reduction of single use plastic is so important. The activism group called on the community to bring in bottles stuffed with compacted single use plastic trash and the bottles that met our quality control standards were paid 20 pesos per bottle. In the end, we received over 8,500 eco-bricks from our hard working community! The enthusiasm and support for this project has been unbelievable! With the completed bottles, we built a small music pavilion and benches at the Center and in all of the public schools in town. At different times of the year, we will continue to collect bottles to complete other projects in our community. Overall the eco-bottle bricks cleaned up our community, saving over 9,000 pounds of plastic from going into the watershed. MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 11

COMMUNITY ENGAGED

CASTILLEJA SCHOOL

Castilleja and Mariposa girls bonded over the completion of a new mural on site (designed by Xaivier Ringer), as well as with a number of activities based on feminist art and perspective of women in creativity and art in general.

BUFFALO STATE

Buffalo State observed in classrooms and developed a language/cultural exchange with some of the oldest Mariposas. 12 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

REFLEXOLOGY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RVP) RVP from Canada offered services of foot reflexology treatments to staff members, mothers and Mariposa girls. By the end of their service they had provided 30+ people with foot and hand massage workshops and over 40 treatments to our team and extended community.

Helped build the small eco-bottle brick pavilion on site at the Mariposa Center for Girls. By the end of the week they had used more than 3,000 bottles and had learned so much about the importance of single use plastic reduction!

EDUCATION FIRST

We hosted four EF groups this winter. Their projects included building the prototype eco-bottle brick bench and beautifying Puerto Cabarete public school with paintings and map murals.

PHILLIPS ANDOVER

Phillips Andover group arrived 2 days late due to winter storm, but made up for their missing days and had a great time as they worked hard on building Mariposa, Kimberly’s, home while learning more in depth about Dominican community and culture.

CONCORD ACADEMY

EARTH DAY

Our Earth Day celebration was one of our most successful presentations so far! Mariposas sang, danced, did theater performances and had an ecological fashion show all in the name of protecting our planet! Many parents and siblings of the girls came to support the performance, making it a great turn out and a perfect platform for us to educate our community on the ecological issues facing our community and the world!

HEALTHY MEALS We continue to serve all of the Mariposas breakfast, 2 snacks and a healthy lunch on site throughout the week. In total we served over 150 people a day in 4 lunch sessions and breakfast. Included in our meal is a lesson on table manners and etiquette. The new lunch schedule has not only taught our girls a tremendous amount, provided them with healthy food but has also significantly increased the attendance rate in the afternoon! WHITBY SCHOOL

Whitby School came for the 3rd year in a row and helped with installation of UNITY project poles. This project is created by a circle of poles with identifiers that are connected with yarn, creating a web. The UNITY pole project reminds us as individuals how we are connected and the similarities we share with each other. We are proud to be the first in Caribbean to have a UNITY pole installation and grateful for Whitby to have presented us with this idea!

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES

Our staff and volunteers connected with fellow girl champions from all over the world to share knowledge and ideas around how to prevent child marriage and empower girls to stay in school and become independent young women. z

Girls Not Bride’s invited and offered Amanda Bucci, Program Coordinator, a full scholarship to attend the 1st Latin American reunion for members in Mexico City. The highlight of the experience was sharing best practices with other organizations working in the Caribbean and Latin America. 18 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

While giving the girls a pep talk, we let them know that they were most likely the only girls of color on the entire island of Hispaniola that are kitesurfing. The more we thought about it, we realized they might actually be the only group of underserved girls in the world that are learning to kite as a team! Thanks to a very generous donation and support from our partners of Wind Voyager and Slingshot Kite for all of their awesome equipment, we have begun the Mariposa Kiteboarding program! Our Mariposas are out on the water often, pushing themselves hard to learn this extreme sport. We are proud of their bravery and love for the water and love to see them excel in a sport that has given Cabarete a name throughout the world!

THE MARIPOSA SURF COMPETITION We were thrilled to have our 5th Annual Mariposa Surf Contest in which 23 girls participated this year! As our surf program expanded, so did the knowledge of our girls. This year, the girls learned new techniques of the sport and continued to take care of the environment by collecting trash during every surf outing. All the Mariposa girls, staff and families were at the beach celebrating the end of another amazing Mariposa Summer Camp! Big shout out to 321Take off Surf School for hosting our program in their school, and to Wind Voyager for supporting the Mariposa surfing program!

FINCA ALTA GRACIA We are thrilled to share that Mariposa is now managing Finca Alta Gracia! Finca Alta Gracia expands our campus to the mountains of the Cordillera Central. The farm is owned by Julia Alvarez and Bill Eichner, who are in the process of gifting it to the Foundation. We have already begun restoring the agriculture and we have plans to build a school that will be home base for Mariposa programming along with hosting community engaged learning groups up there! Julia Alvarez and Bill Eichner came to visit to formalize the gifting of Altagracia to Mariposa. The visit included a walk about at the farm in Jarabacoa, and a day visiting our center. The farm joins the Mariposa Center for Girls, Cabarete Coffee, Cabarete Responsible Tourism and Investment Guide, and Mariposa Upcycled Sails as part of the Mariposa Family. PROFILES IN GENEROSITY

CHARLIE McKINNEY Charlie McKinney first visited us in the spring of 2018 and we are so lucky he did! An avid kitesurfer, Charlie loved our approach of using water sports as a way to build confidence, athleticism and discipline, along with our environmental education to create leaders who will protect the ocean and the watershed. He did not hesitate when we asked him to support our nascent kiting program and environmental programs, and the Mariposa/Wind Voyager kiting program was born! Charlie understood the need to get more girls interested in the sport, especially Dominican girls who are underrepresented. We are so appreciative of all Charlie has done to support the Foundation’s work. Thank you Charlie!

THE GETCHIS FAMILY For 12 years the Getchis’ had been visiting the Dominican Republic and as their kids got a little bit older, they wanted them to fully experience the language and culture and decided to put plans in motion and take the leap. Ryan, a JetBlue pilot, Tessa, a marine biology teacher and their two daughters, Cameron (11) and Makena (9) spent a year preparing for their family adventure - getting certified as lifeguards, taking spanish lessons and soliciting donations for The Mariposa Center for Girls. They raised over $7,000 for the organization and in August 2019, packed a few suitcases filled with snorkel gear, and other donated items for Mariposa and set out on the trip of a lifetime. Ryan, Tessa, Cameron and Makena spent 4 months in Cabarete, volunteering with Mariposa, teaching girls all about ocean conservation, marine life, river systems and more - guiding groups through the lagoon and river on stand up paddle boards. They were an amazing addition to our team and will forever be a part of the Mariposa family. Thank you Getchis Family! MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 35

OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISES

Cabarete Coffee Company continues to prove itself as a major asset for Mariposa. The business produces revenue, which reduces Mariposa’s need to outsource food needs and helps make us more self-sustaining. In addition, we employ some Mariposa graduates as well as current Mariposas. We added new items to our menu, and encourage you to come check us out!

38 | MARIPOSA DR FOUNDATION 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

As we consistently work more and more towards sustainability in our projects and community, we were excited to announce the launching of our “De Uno en Uno Salvaremos el Mundo campaign. This campaign is focused on decreasing the consumption of single-use plastic bags in our community by motivating community collaborators and influencers (schools, small business owners, and restaurants) to begin to be committed to make a sustainable change in their reduction of single-use plastic bags. Each participating business will be visited by our Environmental Activism group, given a survey tool and will sign an environmental commitment to the future children of Cabarete. All businesses who sign the commitment will be provided with some of our amazing Mariposa Upcycled shoppers (reusable bags made with upcycled sails that are sewn by Mariposa girls and women in the community; providing jobs, less trash and generating income for our environmental programming) with absolutely no cost, and solely with the commitment of using the bags instead of single use bags when making purchases. Also, we will be offering up to 20 eco ideas to each business and will be checked in on a monthly basis to register their progress and to better understand their needs. Lastly, an exciting component of this campaign will be to have each commitment campaign member tick statements that their small business does in becoming a true eco champion in our community. By May of 2020, all businesses who can prove their commitment will be featured in an article in our Cabarete Responsible Investment and Sustainable Tourism Guide for the 2021 year!

At the end of 2019, we launched the 2020 Cabarete Responsible Tourism & Investment Guide, which is the 9th successful edition of the magazine produced by the Mariposa DR Foundation to support our community partners through advertising and to share the Mariposa mission and story to the thousands of tourists that visit Cabarete each year.
