Therefore we will make sure you receive health care and learn to advocate for your health and wellness. If your family needs assistance, financial or emotional, we promise we will look for resources to help them, so that they will also remain determined to help you break the cycle of poverty by receiving a quality education that was not offered to them. We recognize that you cannot do it alone, none of us ever have. Our wings are fashioned by many hands.

You began your life many miles behind the starting line, and that was not fair. But this has given you a better understanding of how to be compassionate and patient and we trust you will use this compassion and patience to help others who may stumble or need the wisdom of someone who has had to overcome so many obstacles. You will remain committed and will not give up. You may get used to hearing no, but you will never accept it when it is about your well-being or your own dreams or the well-being and dreams of your community, since we don’t belong to ourselves alone.
To achieve these goals, you must show up. You must contribute your time and devotion. Dream big, work hard. You must never forget your cradle, where you came from and that you will share your knowledge and love with all that you come into contact with. You will care for your mother earth and for your mother who birthed you as well as the many mothers and fathers who helped raise you. In 2018 we lost an amazing man and the founding President of the Mariposa DR Foundation. Dr. James C. White was a distinguished professor, a food expert, an environmentalist, a philanthropist and a true friend to the Foundation. At 101 years old, he had seen a lot of change over his lifetime, and always believed girls and women were the world’s most powerful force for change. In his honor, we republish here his first letter in our first annual report back in 2010. We have come far since then, but could not have done it without Jim’s leadership in the early years. Thank you, Jim. You will be forever missed.
“I am honored and proud to serve as the first President of the Mariposa DR Foundation. For more than half a century I have been affiliated with dozens of nonprofit and professional organizations. None surpasses Mariposa in the energy, commitment, and accomplishments of this intrepid group of pioneers. Our mission, empowering and educating girls to create community-based solutions to end poverty, is part of the global effort of the United Nations Millennium Development goals. Education is the pathway out of poverty. But I know from experience that there are enormous obstacles to overcome before educational opportunities become possible, such as lack of adequate housing, disease, poor sanitary conditions, hunger, staying home to care for siblings and joblessness. I grew up living on ranches in Montana and Canada in a big family with limited means. My ability to overcome some of these obstacles and get an education and support myself was due in large part to the role of strong and determined women—my mother, my sister, my wife. I am thrilled to present this report of the first 18 months of the Mariposa DR Foundation. It reflects the shining example set by honorary chairwoman; the inspiring and visionary leadership of executive director, Patricia Thorndike Suriel; the exemplary collaboration and teamwork of board, staff, volunteers and partners, the heart of Mariposa; and the steadfast support of those who contributed time, talent and funds to make all of this possible, for which we are most grateful. During the coming year we will be increasing our program outreach, and our support network, and adding to the membership of our Board and Advisory Council. WINTER TERM IN 2018, WE WELCOMED 16 NEW GIRLS TO THE MARIPOSA CENTER FOR GIRLS!
The girls became engineers, designers, robotics, programmers, artists, and astronauts through our STEM/Robotics course. Every girl programmed her own game and made robots from all they learned. It was a great science semester at the Mariposa Center for Girls!

COOKING
A new cooking class introduced girls to new recipes for healthy snacks. The recipes are heavy on vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The course also emphasized lessons on fractions and other math concepts.

CHANGING TIDES FOUNDATION In March, we welcomed a group of six surfers from the Changing Tides Foundation, which included the co-founders, pro-surfers, two creatives and the editor of Surfer Magazine. Our six top surfers had an amazing opportunity to participate in a number of excursions and surf adventures throughout the week, focusing their efforts on environmental awareness and activism and the importance of clean waterways. The group initially planned to spend two days of their trip with Mariposa; however, they ended up spending their entire week with us exploring the north coast.

EARTH DAY
We celebrated Earth Day all week long, including maquettes of sustainable housing designs from the engineering class; solar ovens made to bake cookies; the art class presented masks made from recycled materials; theater classes presented environmentally-themed pieces, including an enactment of The Giving Tree; yoga and robotics demonstrations; a fashion show from the Mariposa Upcycled Sails team; a Mariposa Musical Group performance; and our circus stars presented in front of a large crowd of Mariposa family and friends!
Mariposa’s new yoga platform, built primarily from reclaimed shipping pallets, is getting a workout on a near daily basis. Not only do we have a dedicated, airy, outdoor space for our yoga classes, but we also have a beautiful, large stage for events and an additional meeting place for service learning groups and classes. The space is beautiful, useful, and environmentally friendly. A welcome addition to the Mariposa Center for Girls! MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 15
COMMUNITY ENGAGED LEARNING GROUPS We host meaningful trips, fully immersing students, teachers, and other volunteers in the rich culture of this small island nation. Whether volunteers stay a few days or a year, we hope that learning firsthand about our work will turn them into lifelong champions of the world’s most powerful force for change: girls! We feel fortunate to have ongoing relationships with so many volunteer groups. As volunteers work side by side with Dominican and Haitian Mariposa girls on projects at the Mariposa Center for Girls and in the Cabarete community, they gain a greater understanding of impoverished girls’ power to change the world and the Mariposa girls learn about the various cultures and countries that volunteers come from.

MARIPOSA TAKES THE UK A trip in May to the UK for Mariposa’s executive team members, was an excellent opportunity to further Mariposa’s strategic objectives and planning efforts while fostering teamwork. The leadership team visited Mariposa Volando, Romely, at UWC Atlantic in Wales, and met with UWC Headquarters in London, which began the initial conversations that lead to the development of the 2019 UWC Summer Short Course program. The team also met up with leaders from Girls Not Brides Headquarters in London, further fostering the relationship as members of the global GNB member network.
NEW PORTRAITS! Visiting Puerto Rican artist, Rosenda Faro returned to the Mariposa Center for Girls twice to install her beautiful portraits of Haitian feminist activist Myriam Merlet, and Dominican Haitian cane workers activist, Sonia Pierre in the center’s corridor. Killia Llano’s portrait of Michelle Obama as a girl was added to the US Embassy Row corridor. A special portrait installation was made of the Dominican rural countryside woman, Margo Suriel, painted by the talented Cabarete community member, Rosemary Grace.

THE MARIPOSA SUMMER CAMP The Mariposa Summer Camp was a big success with exciting programs in the areas of: • Math

One-on-one tutoring was provided to girls who needed extra support during the summer camp. The 6th graders participated in a powerful identity workshop and professional development for team members was lead by DePaul professor, Bernadette Sanchez. The girls really enjoyed a creative writing retreat for 3 days in Jarabacoa with Iowa State Professor, Megan Myers. A number of games, sports and circle activities in the afternoons with service learning groups topped off our Maripositas programming. Our rising 10th and 11th graders participated in a seminar based on the Diary of Anne Frank and visited the Jewish Museum in Sosúa. Thank you to volunteer Rebecca Williams who created and co-taught the curriculum. All of these wonderful, learning opportunities took place while all of our girls received breakfast, snacks and lunch during our two camp sessions! We would like to give a very special thank you to our US Board President, Tesha Poe, who has managed to come down every summer for the past three years to help us with our summer camp programming and to support us in a number of ways, while learning more about the daily operations of what makes the Mariposa Center for Girls so special! Thank you Tesha!
SURFING PROGRAM This past summer we had eight new girls at our surfing program, including an 8 year-old, our youngest so far! The girls learned the sport and how to take care of their environment. We collected countless sacks of trash from the beach. Our advanced girls were able to try shortboards, thanks to the generous donation of the Changing Tides Foundation. The Mariposas finally waxed their own boards and most of them already know how to duck dive the waves perfectly. Unfortunately, we couldn’t have our annual surf contest, due to some problems at Encuentro Beach. Instead, our girls enjoyed their very first surf trip to La Preciosa, a world renowned wave next to Playa Grande, Rio San Juan. They were accompanied by CTF ambassador, Sarah Brady, who came back to visit and share her love for the ocean with all of us.

RIVER KEEPERS The River Keepers program was in full swing as all rising 6th and 7th graders spent 3 weeks at La Boca estuary to learn about the environment, play games and sharpen their SUP skills.
MARIPOSAS VOLANDO In 2015, in response to the amazing successes of the Mariposas who were graduating from our program, we started the Mariposas Volando (flying butterflies) Program to offer internships in various fields and scholarships for continuing education. MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 25

SWIMMING PROGRAM This fall, we introduced a swimming program 2 days a week for Maripositas and for Mariposas. Living in a coastal community, this skill is essential for safety. It also allows Mariposas to be included in water sports and community events that take place on or near the ocean and rivers.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY
On International Coastal Clean-Up Day (September 16th) the Mariposa girls and Mariposa team took to the streets of the CallejĂłn de La Loma neighborhood to pick up trash.
In total, we collected
3,802 pieces of garbage, 700 of which were plastic beverage bottles.
This year we embraced the United Nation’s 2018 theme of With Her: A Skilled GirlForce for our Day of the Girl activities. Our Maripositas celebrated with a variety of activities linked to the theme in their regular classes, while the Mariposas and Mariposotas enjoyed special activities, including career talks, interviewing skills and understanding gender roles in the workforce.

MINDFULNESS New reflection room was created where individuals or groups of girls can go when they need a space to calm down. We have an established protocol for the space and tactile tools are available. Continued mindfulness activities are happening on a regular basis in each class. MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 29

MUSIC PROGRAM
The Mariposa Musical Group outfitted a room at the center for recording and began recording the songs they have composed with Music Director, Tadeu De Marco. The group performed several times in the fall, including for the US Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, for the Final Holiday Presentation, and the Mariposa Holiday Fair. MARIPOSAS VOLANDO REUNION The Monitoring and Evaluation course planned, organized and hosted our first Mariposa Volando Reunion. With the help of the Mariposotas, the girls were able to invite 15 MV’s to a reunion on site with tours, lunch and focus groups.
BORDER OF LIGHTS This year we commemorated the 1937 Massacre with an event at the Mariposa Center for Girls. We celebrated the rich culture that Haiti and its people bring to the D.R. with music, dance, gastronomy, Haitian Creole lessons, history and images of our sister island nation. The event included Mariposa girls, families, and other NGOs. We closed our Border of Lights celebration of Haitian culture with a presentation from Haitian folkloric dance and drumming troupe- Club Zantray! The Mariposa Center for Girls is constantly reminded of the positive contributions Haitian people have given to the sister countries of Haiti and D.R., and we’re honored to share that love with our Cabarete community.
US EMBASSY VISIT The US Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Robin Bernstein, and her husband, visited and toured the Mariposa Center for Girls.
HEALTH FAIR The Health Fair this year focused on emergency preparedness for Mariposa girls and their families. All girls participated in workshops on Family Emergency Plan Development, First Aid Basics, and a talk with a local firefighter on services the fire department provides and the proper use of 9-1-1. Seven mothers from our Mother`s Support Group were trained in developing family emergency plans and co-led the workshops with families. All families received a basic first aid kit, a family emergency prep sheet and a plastic envelope to secure important documents in case of emergency. Our team and volunteers participated in an interactive firstaid, evacuation and emergency management workshop lead by Safety Extreme. We practiced how to safely extinguish a fire under their guidance! MARIPOSADRFOUNDATION.ORG | 33

MARIPOSA HOLIDAY FAIR After several years of not hosting a Holiday Fair, Mariposa stepped up to the plate and the event was a huge success! Over 600+ community members attended, 35 artisans/ vendors participated and 6 different entertainers (including bands, Zumba, circus and a fire show) performed. Mariposa launched the 2019 Guide and our two Mariposas Volandos studying at UWC Costa Rica were the bilingual MC’s for the event. The event left a very positive image of the Foundation with our community. And, even with so many visitors, the event only produced 4 rice sacks of trash! We want to give a big shout out to Dartmouth, our first Community Engaged Learning group who worked so hard in beautifying the Mariposa Center for Girls as we prepared it for this special event! NEW WEBSITE! We launched a new website with a fresh look and more information about who we are and our work. It also brought together all the Mariposa DR Foundation family of social enterprises into one site. https://mariposadrfoundation.org
SOY DE CABARETE BOOK We published the first of the Mariposa book series: “Soy de Cabarete.” It features an original song written by the talented girls of our Musical Group with the leadership of Professor Tadeu De Marco. “Soy de Cabarete” (which translates to “I am from Cabarete”), celebrates the diversity, heritage and future of their hometown. The book features the work of creative-writer Abby Melick, graphic designer Pamela Cuadros, muralist Xavier Ringer, mosaic artist Annemarie Zwack and photographers Amy S. Martin and Sebastiano Massimino.
8TH ANNUAL CABARETE GUIDE At the end of 2018, we launched the 2019 Cabarete Responsible Tourism & Investment Guide, which is the 8th successful edition of the magazine produced by the Mariposa DR Foundation to support our community partners through advertising and to share the Mariposa mission and story to the thousands of tourists that visit Cabarete each year. https://theguidecabarete.com
PROFILES IN GENEROSITY THE DAILEYS As the next generation of philanthropists, Jenna and Todd Dailey are ardent supporters of the world’s most powerful force for change and actively invest in the Mariposas. They were drawn in during their 2012 visit as MBA students from the IU Kelley School of Business, and have believed in us ever since. The Daileys don’t just show their support by spreading the word about our work, but they take action and are engaged on a weekly basis. They have mobilized their networks and fundraised thousands of dollars over the last six years, including raising over $10,000 when Todd ran the (cold and soggy) Boston Marathon in 2018. Through pro-bono consulting they have volunteered thousands of hours, helping with accounting, strategic planning, and organizational planning as we expand our social enterprises. On top of it all, they are parents to two young boys, Noah (5) and Oliver (3). We’re not sure how they have the time, but we are grateful for their engagement and commitment. Thank you Daileys! Cabarete Coffee Company continues to prove itself as a major asset for Mariposa. The business produces revenue, which reduces Mariposa’s need to outsource food needs and helps make us more self-sustaining. Mariposa Upcycled Sails started off the year strong and we finalized designs for four more products, including our toiletry bag, pencil case, and two different children’s backpacks. With support from Skycatch, Inc. we developed and launched our We’ve Got Her Back fundraising initiative to outfit Mariposa girls with an Upcycled Sails backpack and pencil case for the upcoming school year.
