PORT PERSONALITIES » 1. How long have you been in the marine industry?
It happened gradually over the past 27 years. My background is in finance and business management. While working full-time in the legal field, I took a parttime finance job at a marina. From then on, I kept moving away from suits and heels and closer to shorts and boat shoes. 2. How did you get involved in the industry and this marina?
Susan Prichard General Manager
For the past seven years, Susan has led a team of highly motivated and talented professionals at Marathon Marina. Her crew tackled the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and rebuilt the marina into the beautiful sanctuary it is today. Their can-do attitude and creative problem solving allowed the marina to reopen in record time. Susan is a hands-on frontrunner who knows how to create success by inspiring others. She also has a huge heart and tirelessly gives her all to the community and her fellow employees.
Jules Kinnison
When Jules schedules your boat to be hauled out, she’s there for you every step of the way. She covers your every need from ordering paint and supplies to assisting the yard crew and ensuring the work goes smoothly and according to your plan. Jules can run a bobcat, the Wiggins forklift, the 75-ton Marine Travelift, as well as fuel boats, make dockage, manage RV and vacation rental reservations, and do just about anything you ask her to do. It’s been quite a ride for this “yard dog” since coming to work at Marathon Marina. Jules helped rebuild after Hurricane Irma, which contributed to the marina winning Marinalife’s Best Large Marina 2018 award. Jules is known for her impeccable listening skills, and taking great pride in customer service. When she is not working, she is most likely on her sailboat or sitting poolside enjoying the Keys. marinalife.com | MARATHON MARINA
3. What part of your work is the most fun?
What work? I wake up every morning in paradise and spend the day with guests from every part of the world. 4. What is the most important item to always keep on a boat?
A good sense of humor.

As a Kansas farmer’s daughter, I had no boating experience when I relocated to Florida. Once I got up the courage to leave the dock on a sailboat, I was hooked. From then on, I followed the direction that beckoned me, which ended up being marina management in the Keys.
Caroline McManus Reservation Coordinator
Caroline has led Marathon Marina’s reservation agent team for the past four years. From vacation planning to guest check-in, Caroline strives to make your stay perfect. Her attention to detail combined with 25 years of customer service ensures a positive experience. Her wealth of knowledge on all things “Keys” includes the local hidden gems, which she will happily share if asked. If you travel with pets, you will see Caroline daily. It doesn’t take long for dogs to train their owners to walk to her desk for a good rub and a treat. When Caroline is not orchestrating the daily dance of reservations, she is a jack of many trades. She lives on a 50’ Viking with her husband Max. She is a Dachshund mommy of two, a wine enthusiast, a Key West devotee, a Cessna pilot, and last but not least, a U.S. Navy veteran.

Wade Littlefield
Robert Kinnison
J.J. Bittner
Marina Construction & Equipment Manager
Operations Manager
Environmental Services
Wade has been a valued part of the Marathon Marina team since 2009. He is fully certified and skillfully operates the boatyard’s 75 metric ton travel lift and Wiggins forklift. As a general contractor by trade, he designed and built the marina’s new floating fuel dock building in 2017. Two months after its completion, Category 4 Hurricane Irma paid the marina a visit and was one of the strongest to sweep through the Florida Keys in years. Wade can proudly boast that the fuel dock building survived with zero damage, and is still standing as strong as ever today. He currently lives on his 56’ Sea Ray with his wife Linda.
Robert joined the Marathon Marina team in January of 2017 after retiring from a long career in mechanical engineering and propane management. Evidently retirement did not agree with him, and we’re glad it didn’t! Robert now insures that Marathon Marina is operating in a safe, compliant, green and environmentally friendly manner. He is also the utility guru, and is always there to assist guests with slip issues including anything from pump-out to ground fault. When he’s not at work, you can find him on his 46’ sailboat, cruising the waters with his wife, Jules and their neighbor’s cats.
J.J. started at the marina almost two years ago as a general laborer in the boat yard. He has worked himself into one of the most important jobs in the marina — the pump-out. One laughs at first, but there is so much to this job that goes unnoticed. Marathon Marina is known for being exceptionally clean and green, and this is due in large part to his environmental service efforts. In his personal life, he is an avid gamer belonging to several video game clubs in the area.
Steven Anderson, Kim Sheridan and Rick Michalski Fuel Dock Team Steven, Kim and Rick are always ready to assist you with all your fueling, pump-out and freshwater needs when visiting Marathon Marina. This friendly, professional and highly trained team will ensure that your refueling process is safe and easy. They can also assist you with your transient dockage requests, and will even test your boat for ground fault. When they are not working at the marina, you can find these three out on the water enjoying all that the “Keys lifestyle” has to offer: boating, sailing, fishing, diving and of course, endless sunshine. The team’s motto: More time on the water and less time at the dock! MARATHON MARINA

INSIDERS’ GUIDE TO MARATHON By Susan Elnicki Wade
was awestruck by its unblemished natural beauty. Endless miles of plush tropical foliage looked like an exotic utopia to this oil tycoon who had spent most of his life in New York and Ohio industrial towns.
Welcome to our tropical paradise! We invite you to explore a premier destination enriched with adventurous history and surrounded by bountiful waters teeming with fresh seafood for your table. Our sunsets will take your breath away. Whether you arrive by boat or car, you can easily navigate Marathon’s 13 islands and dock at the multitude of cozy slips for a breezy getaway or a long luxurious vacation.
As a business partner of John D. Rockefeller at Standard Oil, Flagler had amassed a vast fortune by the time he journeyed to Florida, hoping Jacksonville’s sunshine and gentle climate would improve his wife’s failing health. During his stay, he envisioned the grand potential for the Atlantic’s underdeveloped southern coastline, yet also recognized the first obstacle was inadequate transportation.
Our Beginnings Blend into the Future
Starting in 1905, Flagler laid railroad tracks for mile after mile from north to south for the Florida East Coast Railroad. His crew cut through forests, mangroves and marshlands, built bridges across wide expanses of water, and labored under extreme weather conditions. Along the way, Flagler also erected train stations, hotels, hospitals, schools and churches that sparked growth at seaside villages.
To understand why Marathon is unique, take a moment to step back in time and witness how it all began. In 1880 when Henry Flagler first laid eyes on Florida, he 14 marinalife.com | MARATHON MARINA
In January 1908, Flagler’s first train pulled into Knight’s Key Dock in Marathon. By 1912, his tracks finally reached Key West, connecting the southernmost tip of America to the rest of the continental United States. Thanks to his persistence and engineering acumen, you can easily cruise into Marathon and see first-hand what captivated Henry Flagler. Protected places look the same as when the industrialist first arrived, yet subtle growth is taking place to accommodate expectations of today’s visitors.
A Wonderland of Aquatic Adventures Marathon’s 8,300 full-time residents live a gracious life and welcome 750,000 visitors each year to experience their tropical splendor. Family-friendly, boater-beloved and eco-aware, Marathon is the rising destination for maritime merriment and exploration. With the ability to accommodate vessels from kayaks to yachts, the ports are a haven for happy days on the water. Whether you dream of reeling in a trophy fish or snorkeling amidst aquatic creatures in colorful coral reefs, Marathon’s crystal-clear waters make wishes come true. New resorts and upgraded marinas create a home away from home where amenities and service are second to none. With so much to see and do, even business professionals and restless teens put down their cell phones to get in on the action. You name it, Marathon’s got it with outdoor activities — kayak trails, standup paddleboards, jet skis, scuba diving and eco-tours that ease mankind and nature into an amiable co-existence. Fishing tournaments and
chartered day trips showcase the cornucopia of sea catch from tuna and grouper to yellowtail and snapper. When you want a break from the surf and sun, retail therapy at a variety of shops and dining at world-class restaurants are at your disposal. Galleries filled with regional artists’ works are flanked by stores packed with island-inspired jewelry, clothing and accessories that mimic the brilliant hues of the sea, land and sky. The food scene runs the gamut from conch fritters and rum drinks at a tiki hut to fresh seafood served at tables draped with white linens. Stunning sunrises serve as an appetizer for Marathon’s escape to laid-back activities. Relax with friends at a waterfront pub, take a soothing stroll or bike ride through tropical scenery, or experience a show at the community playhouse where local actors command the stage.
Timeless Attractions Await Gazing out at the Atlantic Ocean from Marathon’s view makes guests wonder what lies beneath the azure waves. You can dive in and swim with tropical marine life in their natural habitat or head to Marathon’s showpiece aquatic attractions that entertain and educate visitors of all ages. Must-see destinations include:
Dolphin Research Center At this 90,000-square-foot facility of natural seawater lagoons, the goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and research sea mammals, particularly dolphins, sea lions and manatees. You can watch dolphins perform acrobatics, join educational presentations — or indulge in the ultimate vacation experience of swimming with these magnificent mammals.

Pigeon Key Island
Up to 70 injured sea turtles arrive here each year for medical care, rehabilitation and eventual release back into their natural environment. During their stay, visitors enjoy the opportunity to tour this remarkable facility, watch veterinarians in action and get the insiders’ perspective on this endangered species.
On Marathon’s petite neighboring island, you can step back in time to the 1900s when Henry Flagler was trying to link Florida’s Keys together by railroad. During construction, Pigeon Key housed up to 400 workers. Today a museum and 11 historic buildings tell the tale of Flagler’s crew.
