Meet the 2017 Hero of Education Dr. Ioanna Morfessis President, IO.INC As a business and economic development executive, Dr. Ioanna Morfessis has devoted 30 years to helping business, institutions and communities create and execute change and growth strategies. Regarded as one of the top economic development executives in the nation, she has founded three bestof-class economic development organizations in the U.S. Dr. Morfessis’ accomplishments in regional economic development, life sciences and technology-based developments and programs, and her ability to forge enduring and effective private-public alliances between business, government and education have earned her national renown for her groundbreaking work.

Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation provides crucial scholarships to thousands of students who strive for a better future for themselves and their families. Last year, the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation awarded 3,092 scholarships and program funds for a total of $2,195,421.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is designated by the Maricopa County Community College District to receive and manage gifts on behalf of its ten colleges, two skill centers and multiple satellite centers. The Foundation actively seeks contributions from a variety of public and private sources including individuals, corporations and other foundations. It acts as a trustee for donations to assure that gifts are distributed in the manner specified by the donor.

The Maricopa Community Colleges are ten colleges, two skill centers and numerous education centers, all dedicated to educational excellence and to meeting the needs of businesses and the citizens of Maricopa County. Among the largest community college systems in the nation, Maricopa Community Colleges serve approximately 200,000 students enrolled in credit and non-credit courses annually. The community college system is also the largest provider of transfer students to Arizona’s public universities, comprising approximately 30 percent of all bachelor’s degree completers.
