We had the privilege to met some very special people: Veekay Navarathna, owner of the sim Shekhawati, and his team as well as Perdita Lacey and the Masala Vibes DJs. All have welcomed the Maneira staff with open arms. If you haven’t been to either place, you have to go. You may rezz in as a visitor but will log out as a friend. Also want to give thanks to the incredible designers Aradhana Voight of Mashooka, Mamie Baxton of Maleeka and Zaara for their fabulous and colorful garments. Each garmet is rich in color and each one tells a story and takes you on an adventure. This issue would have been possible without our photographer AtomicSparkle Skytower. Sec ret Dia Hi, I’m Hopeless Romantic.

I

believe in long lingering kisses, cosmic connections, and about true love. I believe in Green Day’s words:

“ I t ’s

something

u n p r e d i c t a b l e , but in the end it’s right” (and for a while, I really did have the “Time of My Life”). This is my diary about the many facets and incarnations of love and romance in SL that I e x p e r i e n c e and hear about from my friends. :-)

10

Still languishing a little from my rece break up with Mr. Heart-Breaker (see M 2009 issue), I had some group thera with friends who have also recently be through break ups. Now I know one of m friends is just as hopelessly romantic a however, one of her totally unromantic a hard hitting declarations struck a cho with me. . . “To hell with falling in love a getting heartbroken, I’m sticking with f buddies from now on. . .”

My initial reaction was “Noooooooo,” b then I thought: “Hmmmm, I never had f**k buddy (FB)”. And on speaking w other friends it seems I’m little behind t times, since at one time or another th all seem to have had FBs. There I w suddenly f e e l i n g l i k e a s h o c k C h a r l o t t e from Sex and the Ci talking to the girls about naughty stuff guess thinking about it, SL is kinda idea geared for FBs - easier to have no strin here. Maybe I should get me one of tho . . Surely, a hopeless romantic such a couldn’t possibly entertain such a notio But, I’m not a prude, and I sort of thi of myself more as a Carrie rather than Charlotte. So, I opened up my mind to t idea – however unintuitive it felt to me.

Now my avi is kinda cute so I do get hit every now and then, but I usually igno

it. However, I met this guy in a store in SL, and he is charming and sexy as hell. So, I allow myself to flirt with him – pure, unadulterated, naughty and outrageous flirting, and it made me smile :-) He was like something out of a romance novel – handsome, well dressed, quite commanding, a successful advertising executive from NYC, and a poet with his compliments. In some fantasy in my head, he could have totally swept me off my feet. In fact, he wanted to sweep me off my feet into his virtual-sexgen-menu-driven bed right there and then. “FB alert, FB alert” buzzed in my head as he tp’d back to his place. I panic - although the thought of cybering with Mr. NYC doesn’t make me balk or log off. The little devil on my left shoulder leans forward and says with a smile to the little angel on my right shoulder: “Ooooh, interesting. . .” I flirt a little more with this Mr. NYC to stall on the tp offer he has now sent me to his place.

Now in my RL and in my SL so far, I have only been with one person at a time, and only after I’ve fallen in love with them so the idea of sex with a stranger is a little foreign - albeit exciting - for me. Blah! What the hell? I tp to his place. Now, he has a on gorgeous place, clearly a man with a sense ore of style, and our mutual attraction grows

stronger from our shared cultural and literary references. The man is well read, intelligent, and not only knows of my work in RL, but admires it too. Cue: melting. OK, this is weird, I’m in some guy’s house having a laugh, really good conversation, and totally enjoying myself after just having been propositioned by him for sex! But thankfully he wasn’t standing by the bed naked with pose balls ready when I tp’d over (phew!). From his conversation and excitement at finding someone who appreciates his clever sense of humor and his witty sarcasm, we sink into his cozy armchairs, and just chat for a good hour or so. I realize there isn’t much of the F part of FB going on, but hey I don’t care! I think he senses although I did accept the tp, deep down, I’m really not a FB kinda girl… So, as the little devil on my shoulder pouts, I realize I’m not that kinda girl either. I’m not knocking the concept of FBs. My friends swear by them, and hey, if you’re all on the same page and have consensual fun – good for you, I say! But hell, you know how I’d be. . . I’d have a FB, and he would end up being my one and only FB, and I’d totally fall in love with him, and he’d be so wrong for me being a FB and all, and my heart would fall off my sleeve again – DOH!!!! It’s hopeless, and so am I… xxx

Getting REAL with Chloie 12

Dear Chloie, I need your help. I have a great SL partner but he wants to meet in RL and really putting pressure on me. I’m not comfortable just yet and have said “no.” I am afraid I’ll lose him if I don’t give in but it’s not what I want, at least not now. This is a ‘real’ dilemma. Should I do it or stand my ground? Not Ready Dear Not Ready, Look.. I think you should 100% stand your ground! It sounds as if you’ve not known him all that long and may be still assessing his character. Taking that step to RL can be wonderful or it can be disaster! I can attest to that! Girl, I could tell some horror stories! No one should be forced to share their RL if they choose not to. That really is the beauty of a virtual world and many prefer anonymity. You need not worry that he will leave you over this. That can’t be the driving force. What’s important is to stay in control of your RL and plant those feet solidly on the ground! Fear Not!

Oh Chloie, my heart is broken.

Check this out Chloie.

Recently, I broke up with my SL partner. Not long after, my best SL friend told me that she was now seeing him. I am still h u r t i n g from our breakup. I’m disappointed that they would do this and don’t want to be around them. We have mutual friends and go to the same clubs and parties. How can I handle this?

My a n t e n n a h a s b e e n u p a n d p i c k i n g up signals for quite some time now with my SL partner. I just know he’s up to something. Should I play detective and spy on him to get to the truth? It’s really killing me!

Still Healing Dear Healing, Part of your healing is getting back to normal situations with your network of friends. Don’t isolate yourself because of these two. Get dressed to kill and party hard. Show him what he’s missing and both of them that you are doing just fine. Something tells me you’ll be right back in the swing of things, having fun and won’t notice their sorry butts at all! Ha! Go get ‘em girl!

Sherlock Sheryl Hey Sherlock! Well curiosity killed the cat! Remember that! Seriously though, I’m very much on board with women’s intuition. We gals know when there is “something a foot”! SL provides ample o p p o r t u n i t i e s for sleuthing. On one hand I’d like to say to trust the guy and let it go. However, go with your gut on this one but be prepared for the worst and how you will “handle the truth”!!!!!

For many of us, SL has become a euphoric escape from the pressures and anxiety that our real lives often plague us with; especially in trying times where many of us are on edge wondering if we will make our next paycheck. In the economic hardships our real lives our facing, we must make important decisions concerning our daily lifestyles and budget. The luxury of SL, that has become our glorified safe haven, may fall low on our list of priorities. BUT WAIT – before you start panicking about your lack of linden love – make sure to consider these tips that will assist you in cutting back your budget (while still looking fabulous.)

In the world of SL fashion, marketing of apparel is an essential tool in helping a designer succeed or fail. Whether it be haute couture or grunge/punk, designers’ have learned the tricks of the trade to get people into their stores. Fortunately for the citizens of SL, their method of reeling you in comes through two little incentives: discounts and freebies. Much like real life fashion, discounts are the easiest way to generate revenue for any shop owner. As a savvy shopper, make sure to check out your favorite stores for discounts they may offer on outfits and accessories. You may find that elegant cocktail dress which was originally priced at 500L go down to as low as 50L at the end of the season. So, where do you find out about these freebies and discounts? If I tell you, I might have to kill you. . . and steal that oh so cute handbag (which, by the way, are totally in this season).

le looking fabulous When trying to find the deals that get you the most bang for your buck, it is important to join groups geared towards the strategic and smart shopper. Groups such as Fashion Consolidated, Sexy Shoppers and Vain, Inc. are three of my personal favorites as they are updated daily (several times a day!) with notices and messages concerning sales. In addition, they also serve as a forum for all your fashion needs. If you ever have a question pertinent to the fashion world, for example, trying to find that super provocative red dress for that night out on the town then pose the question to the group chat. Within seconds you will be presented with landmarks to your search.

L

E

While joining groups is by far the easiest way to find sales, my next tip is more traditional in nature. It is simple and discreet, but often overlooked. When you find a good sale, TELL YOUR FRIENDS. In turn, they will be more inclined to tell you when they find a deal that is to die for. I stated before that marketing is essential, and the oldest and most successful form of marketing will always be word of mouth. SO SPREAD THE WORD PEOPLE! The travesty of our real life economy does not have become a peril in our SL world. If your smart in your money decisions, it will put you in a most happy place later on and with these aforementioned tips you can still look fabulous doing it! ‘Til next time darlings.

1 Million To Goal:

Cancer RESEARCH in Second Life Imagine if you will trying to plan an event in Second Life that spans a 24 hour period, with 24 musical artists (from different genres), all across several different time zones. Trying to plan an event of this large of scope would be the cause of massive stress and anguish for any event planners, live music owners or nightclub management staff. I received one such invite to a Relay for Life event (10am SLT 30 May 2009). With an event this large in scale, I had

22

to check it out myself. Arriving a few minutes early to the venue, I had a chance to chat with some of the team members from Relay for Hope who were orchestrating the event. My questions were answered directly and efficiently by Amanda Steadham, the team captain. For those who don't know, Relay for Life is the top fundraising drive within Second Life for the American Cancer Society which runs from Mid March to Mid July. All proceeds donated in Lindens going directly to the American Cancer Society

Taryn Gartner Maniera Writer

for education, awareness and outreach programs. Amanda Steadham has been in Second Life since August 2006. I asked her about her involvement with Relay for Life. "Relay for Life for me has been a true labour o f l o v e w h e r e I c a n m a k e a difference." Steadham, who is forty something and lives in a western province of Canada, is currently dealing with her second bout of Cancer since 2004. She has a long history of cancer in her family, and she is the third

female in her family to be dealing with this disease. Steadham, who is the current team captain of the team Relay of Hope, has approximately 48 members helping to pull things together. This is her first year with this current team but she has been a Relay for Life team captain before on other teams. "In the beginning I didn't know any of my team members and the size grew quickly, all based on word of mouth, Steadman said. "My team thought we needed to do an event that had never been done before in Second Life." During the planning meeting for her team several of the team members had been tossing around the idea of having a musical festival. The idea of a full 24 hours came later. Using Steadham’s strong connections within the live music community, the wheels started rolling for this event to take form. The event is said to have taken approximately 30 day to plot and plan. At some points she had doubts and worries. At one point asking herself, "What the hell am I trying to do here?" The team Relay for Hope had a goal of raising 1 million linden for the event. By the end of the event, they reached just under half of their original goal with a total of 453,000 linden - a little over $1780 USD. It is important to realize that with events like this a lot can be accomplished but even we, as individuals, can contribute in our own ways. If you are in world and you see a donation kiosk for Relay for Life.. please consider donating what you can spare. Every little bit helps. Let’s help make a difference.

Gloria Gabe:

Heaven’s Gate Revisited Nox Deigan Design Editor

A year and a half ago, the avatar Gloria Gabe was born. Six months later, Gabe debuted onto the Second Life fashion scene, but it would take an obstacle of self-doubt to make her examine herself. Facing a failed modeling career before it had even begun, Gabe rose again to become Gloria Gabe, Second Life model. “Well, first I was asked to participate in Miss Portugal,” Gabe said. “but then someone from the staff didn’t like my looks and kicked me out.” At that time, the Miss Portugal contest was faced with scandal concerning new avatars. Most contests require contestants to be older than 1 month. While Gabe was well over this minimum requirement, it was hinted that outside pressure concerning one of Second Life’s Fight Lands played a role in the dismissal of Gabe from the competition. “After that, I turned my back to those people and started over again,” Gabe explained. “Even my friends list was wiped out.” Not to be discouraged, Gabe consulted with a male model friend who pointed her toward the official Second Life modeling world. “A male model friend told me to join some groups from the fashion world,” Gabe said. “And I got that miraculous note card. After I joined their group, it was like if you’re online and they call you, you get the chance. It was like from heaven.” The miraculous note card came from Second Life New Fresh Face (SLNFF)’s call group. Resident models of this group are considered potential candidates for the SLNFF competition – now in its tenth cycle. Unfortunately, Gabe was eliminated in the finals which took two months to reach. Finishing sixth, Gabe’s modeling career began. She entered into a modeling school to better prepare herself. “I went to InStyle where I met Sami [Kutanaga], one of my best friends,” Gabe said, “and I must say I made a real friend in fashion. She was a student like me.” Despite Gabe’s new found friendship, the experiences at the school were not everything she had hoped. When Gabe neared the end of her coursework,

Masala Vibes: A Mixture of P Nox Deigan Design Editor

Masala Vibes is unlike any club in Second Life. Drawing on a south Asian influence, it sits on a Second Life beach with the sound of animals echoing in the background outside. Even in a virtual environment, Masala Vibes imitates a living environment. “Masala Vibes was originally created as a hang-out for friends only, but as more people got to know about it, more wanted to come so it grew in size,” Perdita Lacey, Masala Vibes owner, said. “Masala means ‘mixture’ so the ethos behind Masala Vibes is a mixture of people and music.” What started off as a small hang-out for friends grew into a small community of 5o or more regulars despite its exclusive status. To get into Masala Vibes before its official public opening took a talk with Masala Vibes management to be given group right status. Despite this, the club grew hand-in-hand with the promotions the Masala team ran among their loyal participants. “Originally, we just did Best in events, and then Ankush started the singing sessions which are really popular,” Lacey said. “[They] have become a regular feature of Masala.” The Best in events are held four times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 9:30a SLT. When Masala Vibes opens to the public today (June 6th, 2009), its exclusive visa will no longer apply and be open to all Second Life residents to explore the culture Masala Vibes has cultivated. Masala Vibes also exists to bridge cultural differences and to educate Second Life residents around the world about Indian-Pakistani culture while giving a nod toward other cultures as well. “We celebrate special Asian festivals in Masala Vibes e.g.: Vaisakhi festival, Depawali festival, EID festival and Christmas,” said Ankush Jonson, one of Masala Vibes DJs. Masala Vibes hosts a variety of musical experience. While all of Masala Vibes’ DJs do play Bollywood and Bhangra, a type of folk music from northern India sang in punjabi, they also play house electronica, jazz, hip hop and a specialty blend club/electronica music called Indian fusion. In Lacey’s own words, Masala Vibes’ DJs were not selected but came. With this thought in mind, such a blend of musical tastes and familial association is rare among a Second Life business. “They are all amazing DJs, and the parties at Masala rock with a huge variety of music from India and the west,” Lacey said. “They are all good friends, and we are all very 30 much part of the Team Masala family. There would be no Masala without them.”

The history of India - the socio- cultural chapter, was somewhat re-written during the 18, 19 and 20th century by group of elite people belonging to western India region call Shekhawati ( now in Rajasthan state) ushering revolution in art and architecture of distinct characteristics. The enterprising group belonging to business community popularly known as “ Marwaris” and the warrior class called “Rajputs” constructed palatial mansions with huge courtyards and frescoes paintings on the walls of the structures thereby by creating open art galleries hitherto unknown to the world. The imposing mansions called Havelis even today stand testimony to the rich architectural marvel and fine artistic creativity of the period which

Aradhana Voight,

owner and designer of Mashooka Designs, Mashooka (143, 167, 24), has used her cultural background and her talent for design to grace SL with some of the most stunning traditional Indian fashions and trend-settingly beautiful Indian-influenced contemporary designs. In telling the story of how she began designing clothing in SL, she recalls how she even ended up in SL. After hearing about SL in the media, she decided to join in December 2006. She enjoyed the whole experience of designing her own avatar, the shape and features, getting the perfect h a i r, a n d d e s i g n i n g h e r

W h e n s h e n o t i c e d some of the gorgeous wardrobes worn by others, she discovered that you could actually shop in SL. With this revelation, she decided that SL would be her favorite game. Being ethnically Indian, she searched for Indian clothing but did not find much in the way of a selection and nothing glamorous, or “Bollywood”, at all. This is the reason that in April 2007 she decided to design fashions herself. She always enjoyed drawing and she tapped into this talent to bring her designs to life in SL. With some designs under her belt, she decided to open her own store and was surprised herself to

see how many people came to shop there. This was very encouraging to her and it gave her the impetus to continue designing more. Aradhana’s Indian background has had a dramatic impact on her designs. In particular, she reflects on her childhood and how she enjoyed the Bollywood movies. There was one very popular Indian actress named Sridevi, the “Bollywood Queen” of the 1980’s and 90’s, that she admired most. Aradhana explains, “Her dancing, her clothing....that gave me a lot of ideas.” She also realized that in RL, Indian style prints and styles were very popular in western designs as well. Aradhana decided to meld these influences into her SL designs.

In summarizing her inspiration for her designs, she offers, “The inspiration comes from my own mood and what I would like to wear myself. Every woman has periods of wearing short skirts to feel sexy or just wearing jeans to feel comfortable. That is what inspires me; what I would want to wear myself.” In addition, she researches by reading fashion magazines and watching Indian TV programs to keep on top of the trends in fashion. While keeping up with the trends, she doesn’t forget about her traditional designs and tries to strike a balance designing for both aspects of her design line. Aradhana’s contemporary wedding

gowns are just stunning and she attributes this to her own fantasy about her own dream wedding gown. She admits, “I am a romantic...love to watch movies with a happy endings, mostly with the grand Indian weddings.” Her traditional Indian wedding gowns are a sight to behold, and she loves the traditional red heavily embroidered Indian Wedding dresses. A new addition to her line, the Jodhaa Princess Gharara, reflects her love of the traditional wedding attire. The Jodhaa Princess Gharara was inspired by the hit movie Jodhaa Akbar and Aradhana’s feeling that Akbar’s era was the ultimate i n g l a m o u r. The traditional bridal gown has the deep rich colors of authentic Indian designs yet adding a slightly modern touch with optional pieces of the ensemble to wear or not at the preference of the bride. The ensemble includes the top, pants and skirt prim along with a veil and the dupatta wrapped drape. To accessorize the princess bride, Aradhana has designed breath-taking jewelry, the Jodhaa Akbar Royal Jewelry, dazzling with diamonds, rubies and pearls. While embracing the hallmarks of the traditional designs, she is flexible to the requests from her customers in terms of a variation in colors from the traditional red. In RL, it is accepted now to have some variations in color and style and Aradhana emphasizes that her traditional wedding gown is, “a mix of the traditional, along with my own fantasies, and what I think SLers want.” As far as a favorite category of design, she really can’t choose between the traditional and the contemporary saying,

For those interest in learning more about

Mashooka Designs, please visit Aradhana’s blog: http://mashookadesigns. blogspot.com/ For those more media inclined,

Aradhana also offers a youtube: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Vq3gu8Zkhe0 “Sometimes I get inspired by contemporary clothing and that triggers me to e n t h u s i a s t i c a l l y go to work on that. Other times, I watch a movie and get an idea in my head that has to come out. So I really can’t choose. What I can say is that I enjoy making things for SL.” What she enjoys the best as she says, “is seeing people wear my designs, contemporar y or traditional, and seeing how they use their own imagination to mix them to get an original look for themselves. I

love seeing beautiful ladies wearing my creations and enjoying them so much. This is such a pleasure to me, puts a smile on my face and the gives me the initiative to start new projects for Mashooka.” As her business has grown and become more hectic for her, Aradhana realized that she needed a team. For this, she went to her two dearest friends in SL, Suri Christen and Dips String. Of them she says, “They are here to support me, and also a great part of Mashooka designs.” She also sees the importance of having a blog to give her brand wider recognition. She started her blog in August 2008 where she posts news of her latest design releases. The experience of designing in SL has provided her with an outlet for her creativity, first drawing her concepts on paper and then bringing them to life in SL. Aradhana considers designing her hobby and her passion and she wants to continue learning more and t r y i n g d i f f e r e n t things in SL. The feels, “There are endless possibilities here t h a t d r i ve m e t o c o n t i n u e.” For the future, Aradhana plans to continue designing and releasing new fashions as long as SL exists. While a successful designer, she also has her own philosophy about SL. Aradhana asserts, “Second Life is a hobby unto itself and is something to be enjoyed first and foremost. It’s great to relax and be stress free sometimes and that is when the creative juices seem to flow.”

Success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar, his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godhavari River. Mamie Baxton came into view small in stature, but with a unique, rich, robust and sexy presence. As we walked discussing homes, she mentioned her taste for unique homes which coincidentally is a uniqueness that comes across in her clothing designs. Having discovered Second Life in a flight magazine while doing graphic design work, Baxton decided to visit our virtual reality, and says she has been hooked ever since. She describes SL as “. . . a great medium to do things as per your own whim and cries.” One of those things is her very own store called “Maleeka.” In addition to designing clothes in real life, Mamie’s other hobbies include painting, enjoying free time with friends, tennis, women’s rallies and racing. “I am a designer in real life so the inclination was natural but at the same time, I tend to be a bit apprehensive,” Baxton explains. “Some of my close friends ultimately managed to convince me to start designing and creating in Second Life as well. I would still say it is a very slow process from my side, but I am working on it.” Viewing her clothing you will notice immediately t h e t r a d i t i o n a l In d i a n i n f l u e n c e come across with bold colors, decorated waist lines, and flair. Baxton explains they are influenced by her heritage

and roots. She caters to customers who wish to divert from the normal and try experimenting w i t h e x o t i c , n o n c o n v e n t i o n a l designs. Her joy in designing clothing for customers is for them to wear designs that make them feel beautiful and that they can revel in. “Beautiful is what I would want every single person to feel in my creations,” Baxton says. “If it pleases your eyes and makes you feel wonderful, I know my work is not wasted.” Watching as she moves gracefully and turns with a bold smile accented by her thick black hair piled high with a fall of cascading curls, she continues: “My designs tend to be loud, vibrant and colorful. All things colorful and shiny inspire me. My inspiration may strike from anything: from a Bollywood Music Video to a group of ethnic women walking on the street wearing chaotically colored outfits. I tend to see, contemplate and carry out the whole thought process. It may be a little unsteady at the start, but once I know my direction I work on it till I am satisfied.” Fashion is filled with the unusual people and designs, but for Baxton who can be inspired by what many might consider unusual keeps a more grounded approach to her designs.

67

“I like keeping my design philosophy very down to earth,” Baxton explains. “I tend to be quite direct in my approach hence for me, it is never long stories or extremely deep thought process. I like to do what I see, and recently, I have been amazingly inspired by the creepy crawlies of nature. Lady bugs, brilliantly colored frogs, rainbow colored wings of a dragonfly.. Aren’t they just gorgeous?” Her answer brings a smile as the influences described cascade her skirt and blouse. Baxton describes her own designs as, “a balanced mixture of elements, picked from traditions blended in harmony with modern aspects to come up with something that would please our aesthetic sense.” She points out she does feel that it is a bad idea to tamper with a traditional classic. You will find in visiting her location that the seasons do influence the available selection. Baxton describes the seasons and their moods as having a major impact on her designs and their direction. Her clothing will welcome you as the displays of fresh bold looks in the summer, with rich, classy looks in the winter a n d l i k e w i s e . Baxton elaborates that her love for colors is so strong that she never hesitates to go loud and bold while hinting that her favorite color is gold. “A hint of gold accentuates, uplifts, and puts life into a design,” Baxton explains. “I personally tend to like distressed textures, but of course satiny and sheer textures remain classics forever and incredibly feminine at the same time.” A dream fashion show described by Baxton would have mélange of colors from Baxton in bright pink

a same color family which would be used in the clothes as well as to create the ambience around the show. “I would love to have the show area decorated in such a manner that it is ethereal and dreamy, yet add minute details which are in total contradiction to the whole idea,” Baxton elaborated. “That is just me, combining two opposite things.” Baxton’s favorite texture is the “Bindiya Lehenga” in leaf because it is shiny, sexy. She describes her other favorite as a combination of her bikini style “Choli” with her flowy street style skirt. “I love what I do!” Baxton says. “I do it to satisfy my own creative streak, and you really feel you have accomplished something when you see a person wearing one of your designs. It puts a smile on my face.” A golden nugget is to look out for the grand opening of the new main store for Maleeka displaying more choices for customers to select from. While Baxton explains that it is all a work in progress, she is certainly up for the challenge. In an effort to provide affordable quality fashion to the masses, “Maleeka” is introducing her new line called “CHIC” simultaneously. Everything will be quality fashion and priced for 25L$. While these designs would not be India-inspired, she explains that they will be stylish. She is working on a high couture line of gowns as well. You will find examples of her clothing at http://www.flickr.com/photos/37409639@N03/ She welcomes IM’s and notecards. “I love giving out gifts. Visit my little boutique and take your pick from a variety of special gifts I have created for you.”
