Dear Editor, I have been following Nikki Reed’s career since wrote and starred in Thirteen, and it’s so great to see how far she has come. She looks stunning in each shot, and the styling was beautiful. The “Toy Soldier” shoot was a perfect fit for the Holiday Issue and I also enjoyed the new street style segment. The magazine’s fashion sections are really evolving.

Dear Editor, I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and have very strong roots to this city. I really appreciate that you’ve stayed true to Pittsburgh and focus on a lot of local businesses. I look forward to seeing the Guide each issue and love that you highlighted a local restaurant in the last issue as well. Pittsburgh is changing, and it’s nice to see a publication that recognizes the cool things this city is up to. Maggie | Shadyside

We all know that spending time with family and friends trumps all other aspects of the holiday season. This is a time where we tend to step away from all of the celebrity drama and focus on what’s really important in our lives. I had the pleasure of interviewing our cover girl, Nikki Reed. She’s a celebrity who, without any prompting, focused on the importance of her family life and her relationship with her husband above all things Hollywood and her acting career. Just because we have the insight to see what the holidays truly mean, it doesn’t mean we won’t be giving gifts to those friends and family – Come on, let’s not pretend that it’s not a little bit about the presents. We’ve put together a great guide for you of the best shops around town, some new and some old favorites. When getting dressed for the holidays, let your personality really shine. Forget that rule about taking off one accessory before you leave the house. Go crazy, wear sequins and glitter at once. We had Nikki Reed dripping in gems. We mixed prints on prints and topped them with a bow for our fashion spread. Unsure how to dive into the world of over-the-top style? This Fashion Week we focused on covering up-and-coming designers who we think are changing the game. After a peek at some of their unisex ensembles and Space Age details, you’ll have more than enough inspiration to go bold. If you don’t tend to live loud with fashion, find your glow with our Dark Angel Beauty shoot. Accessories are also the safest way to take a risk in what you wear, so we threw in some amazing statement jewelry when we shopped for this issue. We know the holidays can also be taxing. While all that family is fantastic, we recommend after-party cocktails from the hot new lounge, Truth. One cocktail isn’t going to cure your holiday hangover? We didn’t think so. We provide inspiration for the post-holiday vacation you’ll be taking by jetting off to Turkey. Don’t succumb to buying yourself a present while shopping for others at the mall; save your money and spend it at the Grand Bazaar there. To round out the issue, we keep you cultured by featuring the amazing photographic series that Bridget Fleming has created. We talk about a new album and do more family talk with singer and mom, Nelly Furtado. We introduce you to who we predict as the next it-girl, Maika Monroe. And finally, after looking at all of your cousins and coworkers at too many holiday parties, we provide some eye candy for you with a feature on Pretty Little Liar’s heartthrob Tyler Blackburn. This year has been a great one and MANIAC couldn’t be more grateful. Our app is about to launch. Our name is popping up in new cities. We’re so thankful for all of our readers and all of our fans. So don’t bother to send us gifts, because you – yes, you – you’re it. Have a safe and happy holiday season. We will see you in the new year with more excitement and a lot more MANIAC moments. Love,

She’s singing with her American Idol husband. The accompanying video to their most popular song is a four-minute walk with the duo through a country field; he’s clad in flannel with a guitar. She proudly tweets that her mother is her hairstylist and uses her brother’s photography on her blog. I went into our interview skeptical of this brunette bombshell. Is this the same girl who we saw inhaling from a gas duster to get high and performing oral sex in the movie Thirteen? The answer is no. So just who is Nikki Reed now? She’s stable. She’s smitten with her husband. She’s gorgeous, though she doesn’t look so wholesome – we discuss that thick eyebrows are not equated with friendliness. If she doesn’t have it together these days, she’s got me fooled. Aside from the tense few seconds when she’s dodging my question about the Twilight relationship drama (which she later admits in our interview - her publicist would kill her), Nikki Reed seems like a girl that I know. She seems like me, the girl that may not have had it all together as a teen, the girl that experimented because she had to in order to become stronger. Maybe this is part of the reason that Thirteen earned the success and the acclaim that it did. Teens saw her character in themselves. Mothers saw her in their daughters. Nikki co-wrote the script at thirteen years old, and there was no denying its honesty. The hard part that both Nikki and the public seem to be struggling with is that she’s not that girl anymore. That was a decade ago. Things have changed, and so has Nikki. Since her launch to fame, she’s been typecast as the bad girl, and that’s not an easy image to shake. “I have to embrace it all,” Nikki says of her latest role playing Rosalie, the least likable of the Cullen clan in the pop-culture phenomenon book-turned-movie series, Twilight. Unfortunately for her, she’s linked to being the same person as Rosalie. “The public does it subconsciously,” she says of her ties to the character. “I’m just trying to do good work, and if that means playing the most edgy, promiscuous, dark characters, then that’s okay.” She has no harsh words to say of any of her Twilight cast mates and seems much more at home talking about her own past and being candid about her personal life. The end of Twilight is near, and Nikki is just trying to take it as it comes. “I think it’s really overwhelming to be at the end of something that’s been such a huge part of my life,” she says over the phone as she’s doing press for the final film. She also admits to being in denial that the series has 14

ended, “My brain can’t comprehend that this is the last time we’ll all be together. It’s almost too much to think about,” she says of her last run with her costars. I don’t pry much further into Twilight territory after my initial rejection. Nikki’s publicist is on the line the whole time, and this seems to be the only subject that’s totally out of bounds. I’m not all that interested in Kristen Stewart’s personal escapades, and it doesn’t seem like Nikki is either. So as Nikki puts another somewhat disagreeable character on the shelf, we get into where she’s headed next. “People don’t really see me in a light-hearted role. Maybe I’ll be in some comedies,” she hopes. “Reese Witherspoon is America’s sweetheart because of the characters she plays,” Nikki says matterof-factly and without resentment. Nikki didn’t start out as a light-hearted girl though, and talking to her, I’m glad that she didn’t. She’s not all fluff. She showed the world her chaotic family life, without knowing the consequences Thirteen would bring and the time it would take to rebuild those relationships. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, and after the film, Nikki left her mother’s home. “I’ve had moments of regret,” she says, “I was so young and didn’t have any idea of what I’d be doing to my family.” In retrospect, she says that her parents just didn’t want to have the discussion with her about what the results would be of making the film. They only wanted to support her in any way that they could. She hammers the point home to me that no matter how dysfunctional her family may have looked, they were always supportive and she is grateful. The film was made. It gained fame. Nikki’s relationships suffered, but then they evolved. “I love that film for what it is. I just really had to learn how to separate myself from it,” Reed says. Nikki’s mom now lives with her and husband, Paul McDonald. Her dad is her best friend. She doesn’t try to hide the fact that this all took time, a lot of time. Stress was heightened being a working actor and she was a teenager with her life unfolding in front of the world. “There are a lot of things that come along with being in the public eye. Nothing comes without a price,” she says. “I’ve always had a really strong personality, and it took me a long time to figure out how to work that to my advantage,” she says. With what looks like a happy marriage and a happy family surrounding her, it appears that Nikki has figured some things out. She works with her husband, and that puts them on display. You can’t win when it comes to public opinion though. When a celebrity relationship is kept under wraps, it’s assumed there are secrets. When it’s put on display, it’s assumed it’s for show. “I’m not in any position to give anyone advice,” she says of marriage. “I have no idea if I’m doing things the right way. It’s always controversial.” She knows the challenges of being in the business, and tries to keep him close. “Right in the beginning I said sacrifices have to be made.” She traveled to thirty of his shows in five months, and makes sure that he’s the top priority whether it affects her career as an actor or not. She asserts that he is the most important thing to her saying, “There are so many people that will happily step in and take your place.” It’s only appropriate her husband and family would inspire Nikki’s upcoming jewelry line. Named after her grandmother, Mattlin Era will have a handmade feel and its key piece is a bolo necklace. “I hope that handmade translates,” she tells me, “I grew up making things. We didn’t have a lot of money. If I saw something I liked, my mom could make it. I have that instilled in me.” Reed’s jewelry collection is incredibly personal and she’s not

watching its production from a distance. “I was all over the place at my first meeting. I went in with my own sketches,” which she explains is a total Hollywood taboo. “I was like, there must be something in here that’s good.” She’s still a little apprehensive to call herself an artist, and isn’t shy about owning up to having insecurities. The line will be sold on www.glamhouse.com next to Nicole Richie’s successful brand, House of Harlow. “I’m so close to it,” she says of her own collection. “It’d be weird if I was 150 percent confident. I just have to stay true to myself and my vision.” It’s refreshing to talk to a celebrity who admits to having insecurities. “I have days where I wake up and really nothing bothers me,” Nikki says. “Other days, I’m really sensitive.” She says that the best advice she’s received came from a friend who told her, “If it’s not personal, don’t take it personally.” While Nikki is grateful for all of her fans and her successful career, she has learned to separate them from the people who truly know her. She says that the fans contribute to her success. They are loyal and supportive, but this also makes them feel entitled to have an opinion on her life. She brushes off the opinions saying, “I’m sure there were people who hated Mother Theresa and Gandhi too.” Reed might not be Gandhi, but she’s also not the bad girl that everyone makes her out to be. “I’m growing. I’m learning. I’m still figuring it all out,” she says. She credits her mom for keeping her in check. She’s had a lot of good fortune and her mom tells her that she has no right to have a feeling of “poor me” when the media gets to her. Our interview is starting to go over time and I try to wrap it up by asking for a sentence describing the real Nikki Reed. She gets a little uncomfortable searching for some adjectives and not wanting to boast. I can hear the car door shut and her voice lights up and says, “Why don’t we ask Paul?” Her husband’s voice is muffled in the background. He describes her as “thoughtful, humble, and very cool,” she tells me. Her parting words to me are, “Make sure that everyone knows I didn’t say that about myself.”

Sunflower POWER

POWER, a Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery, has been around for 21 years and strives to help recovering women rebuild their lives after suffering from addiction. Five years ago, Mary Prezioso and Sherree Goldstein started Sunflower POWER, a unique event to spread POWER’s mission through art and fashion. The two event chairs organize and plan the highly-anticipated event and help it become a success each year. Over 300 attendees made their way to PerLora in the Southside to raise money for the charity. As always, the Sunflower models were shining in creative outfits that resembled the tall yellow blossoms. Amy Snyder and her team from Izzazu International Salon styled each model’s whimsical hairdos and collaborated with Prezioso to produce the imaginative ensembles each lady wore. This year, inspiration for the models’ looks was drawn from the hugely popular Hunger Games, which represents determination and survival. Like the admired book series and movie, POWER is all about beating the odds, overcoming, and surviving. Square Café, the Regent Square hotspot that Goldstein owns,

20

provided light fare for the event. Other local eateries participating included Bistro 19, Ibiza, Nine on Nine, and Penn Avenue Fish Company. Among the decorative space, full of modern furnishings and art, DJ Kelli Burns provided musical entertainment, and Cesar’s Designs showcased their distinctive, custom jewelry. The men of X Shadyside also helped work the event and offered guests some eye candy as well. The most interactive part of the night was the live auction, which featured hand-painted chairs designed by seven prominent, local artists. Stephanie Armbruster, Rick Bach, Alexis Covato, Allison Hoge, Dave Klug, Michael Lotenero, and Mia Tarducci Henry stood proudly beside their work, as emcee Brenda Waters auctioned each item off. In all, the Chairs for Charity auction raised a whopping 15,000 dollars, and all proceeds went to benefit POWER. 21

The Indestructible Spirit of

NELLY FURTADO

After more than a decade of musical prowess, Nelly Furtado has solidified herself as a dynamic veteran. Her eclectic career has earned her Grammy Awards and numerous astounding accolades. She’s gained millions of adoring, multi-national fans, landed performances at Super Bowls and European Football Championships, and won a permanent place in music history. 22

MUSIC

Nelly Furtado is more than a comeback kid who has collaborated with music’s heaviest hitters. She is more than a musician and a loving mother. Nelly Furtado is a force. After twelve years in the business, Nelly acquired multi-platinum record sales status and a repertoire of songs spanning over four very different studio albums - She recorded an album entirely in Spanish and even has a compilation of her greatest hits. What you might not know is that it’s not just albums for Nelly. She started her own label, Nelstar, named after her original trip-hop duo from the nineties. When I talked to Nelly over the phone, she was gearing up for her latest release, The Spirit Indestructible (now available nationwide). Furtado has spent the last few years perfecting what she describes as, “a friendly punch in the face.” She laughed and gushed about the new record, “[The album] has an aggression to it, but it’s kind of poignant, but at the same time it’s friendly. It’s positive.” When asked exactly how much it will resemble works like her 2006 release, Loose, she explained, “The

best way to describe it is raw and strong, and um, playful at the same time.” She said in an August 2012 press conference in Singapore, “Obviously it’s more about the artistic accomplishment, rather than the commercial success for me, and I’ve proven that to myself over the years through perhaps albums like Folklore, that maybe weren’t my most commercially successful albums, but have the fans coming back to me year after year, telling me “Try” is their favorite song or, ‘Can you sing “Folklore”? ’ because that’s the album that means the most to them.” The Spirit Indestructible had fans worldwide eagerly awaiting Nelly’s return to the airwaves. “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)” is the lead single off of the new release, and it has already made its presence known. Club-jam-meets-storyteller, “Hoops channels my fourteen year-old self,” Nelly tells MANIAC. “At the age of fourteen, when I borrowed my sister’s big hoop earrings and I would go down to the mall to, like, freestyle, or hang out in the park with my friends. Or go jam

to songs - all my favorite hip hop songs. I used to grab the mic at parties, freestyle. There’s just a certain power that comes from that. So, ‘Big Hoops’ is like an ode to all my favorite music of that time.” “I was making the record, I was in a really joyful place, in a Utopia, sort of an elevated state of mind,” Nelly says. “I don’t know, the last couple of years have been probably the best years of my whole life, just traveling a lot, experiencing different people and cultures, and coming back into myself as a person. Where I just feel very me. This is just very, very me. I want [the listeners] to move their bodies. I want them to be part of my life.” The title track and second single off of the new album, “The Spirit Indestructible,” drives to the core of human perseverance. Nelly wrote the song taking inspiration from a paraplegic man named Spencer West, whom she works with on the charity project Free the Children (http://www. freethechildren.com/). Nelly elaborated, “I just met some crazy inspiring people.” Nelly wrote the album at a time when

there was a lot going on in the world, from the financial crisis to natural disasters. The togetherness people exuded to overcome these obstacles fueled the motivation to write a song that could capture beauty in the human race. Furtado has collaborated with everyone from Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Josh Groban, and soon to be Andrea Bocelli. When MANIAC asked her about her dream collaboration, her answer was surprising to say the least. She exclaimed, “I would die to work with Eminem! I think it would be frightening in the most creative sense of the word. Just like, ‘Oh my God!’ I feel like I would have to really on the ball when I’m in the room with Eminem.” We would love to hear that! “But I love that feeling. I love the feeling of when you throw yourself into the flames and you have to come up unscathed.” In addition to working with some of the most talented artists in music, Nelly Furtado draws inspiration and drive from the biggest force in her own life - her daughter, Nevis. 23

MUSIC Motherhood came to her between Whoa, Nelly! and Folklore. “You know, mothering is something I’m very passionate about, and so is music. Those two things I kind of blend in my life. The beauty of it all, I think, adds to when I’m writing and just feel like it kind of makes the stakes higher, you know?” Her daughter is what drives her work. “I think that also, for me, more than anything, motherhood made me more aware of my own mortality. Like, oh my God, I need to stay alive for someone else. I need to stay potent for someone else, and inspired and motivating.” Nelly Furtado has ascended through genres and moved people in many different ways. Nelly Furtado is a sprit indestructible - and her new album reminds everyone just why she is who she is. Strap in. This journey is going to rock. MAIKA MONROE A Triple Threat

At the age of eighteen, most girls are graduating from high school and making plans for college. Maika Monroe had a different idea. In order to pursue her dreams of being a professional kiteboarder, Monroe made the decision to finish her senior year of high school online. Little did she know that she’d soon receive a phone call to star alongside Zac Efron, and pictures would be popping up online of the duo on the red carpet. Donning a feathered white Marchesa gown, this teen beauty doesn’t fit the mold of an aspiring Olympian and part-time fashion designer. 26

twice about leaving.” Cut off from her cell phone, car and television, Maika still said it felt like home. She continues to train on a daily basis, and has recently designed her own collection for Airbound Apparel. “It started small,” said Monroe, “just designing t-shirts, but I was always interested in doing more - skirts, dresses, cover ups, basically the clothes I live in.” Maika loves opposites and mixing and matching. Airbound Apparel believed in her point of view and they are working together on launching her swim line called M. Dillon M. this spring. “It’s been fun so far, but I can’t wait to launch it this spring,” said Monroe. Maika and Airbound Apparel are also doing their best to support an organization called Kiteboarding 4 Kids. The organization raises money for local charities focused on child health and education. “I was just there for their annual fundraising event in August,” said Monroe. “It was great to see the things the kiteboarding community can accomplish when they band together.” With all the designing and kiteboarding and charity events, one would assume having an acting career would be difficult. Maika has managed to do it all.

Although Maika’s roles come off as headstrong and reckless, she is the opposite. Maika is extremely driven and appreciative. She doesn’t take small things for granted and said her most life changing moment was walking on the beach in Cabarete after a training session and seeing her mom. “My mom was barely able to contain herself,” said Monroe. “That’s when she told me that I was headed back to Los Angeles to meet with the director of At Any Price.” The film is a drama centered around an enterprising farmer whose plans cause problems within his family. Maika plays Zac Efron’s girlfriend – not a bad role to be in for her first big break. “He is so fun and so down to earth,” Monroe said of working with Efron on the film. “We had a lot of fun on set, whether we were dancing or racing golf carts.” Maika plays a very strong, independent role. “Her parents are not there for her so she is street smart.” Already gaining buzz as the girl to watch, Monroe has since been cast in a Sophia Coppola film, The Bling Ring, with Kirsten Dunst, Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga. She was also cast in Jason Reitman’s Labor Day, alongside Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. But before being an actor, Maika is a kiteboarder. Ignoring her friends’ disbelief as to why she would move to a third world country, Monroe trained in Cabarete her last year of high school. “I went to the Dominican Republic in 2009 for a few weeks, then returned in 2010 for a few months, and then finished my senior year of high school there in 2011,” said Monroe. “I didn’t think

When she was twelve, Maika’s swing dance teacher told her class about a casting call for background line dancers. Maika was the only one in her class that jumped at the opportunity. “I didn’t know how to line dance but knew practically every other style of dance,” said Monroe. She was the only child that showed up and was fascinated by the whole filming process. The director and producer saw it in her eyes. “They wrote me into the script and I had my first speaking line.” It was a horror film - fake blood, fog machines, and severed heads. She couldn’t get enough. Most of the filming was at night and continued into the early morning. She would beg her mom to let her stay and watch until they wrapped everyday. “The director would let me see behind the camera. The special effects guy would let me help him with the fake chopped off heads.” She knew film was exactly where she wanted to be. Because of her speaking role, she was able to become a member of the Screen Actors Guild. At only twelve, she was signed with a manager who helped her get an agent. She has been auditioning non-stop since. While training in the Dominican Republic, she was working with her acting coach via Skype and sending out audition tapes for movies. That’s when she got the call from director of At Any Price. Maika likes to think she has one foot in Hollywood and one foot in the sand. She may be pursuing acting one hundred percent, but on her off days, you’ll find her in the waves. 27

BRIDGET FLEMING Downtown from Behind

28

ART

What does fashion blogger-extraordinaire Leandre Medine of The Man Repeller have in common with Foursquare founder Naveen Selvandurai? Apart from their contributions to modern culture and reshaping the internet as we know it, they’re just two of the high-profile subjects we see cycling the streets of lower Manhattan, from behind, in Bridget Fleming’s photographic series, Downtownfrombehind. Over one latte at a sidewalk table, the possibility of seeing both a fashion editor in couture Dior and a butcher in a bloody apron is not so outlandish in downtown New York. From hairstylist to city planner, designer to model, and chef to architect, Fleming unites all kinds by one thing: how they get there. Cycling is a growing commuter choice in New York City, and the perfect place to catch a moment of the movers and shakers of the city, on the move. Fleming set out to tell stories of both the people and places that make New York City the culture-capital of the country. The series aims to capture people riding their bikes from behind on streets, avenues, and lanes below 14th Street. “The result is an environmental portrait for each street and subject with a goal to highlight a set of individuals,” explains Fleming. MANIAC talked with Bridget about DowntownfromBehind, her recent successes, and her future plans. An Australian native who moved to the Lower East Side in 2008, Fleming wanted to create a project that would capture “the heartbeat of New York.” Inspired by the architecture and environment of downtown New

York, as well as the diverse people inhabiting the city, she started shooting the streets. “I didn’t think it was that ambitious at the time,” Fleming explains. “Two years later, I realize it was quite the undertaking!” With 200 streets in New York below 14th Street, an ambitious project is what Downtownfrombehind truly is. Two years later and Bridget has over 220 images in the series (with more to come). In the world of street style, Fleming has managed to find a different style shot, from behind. There are only a few shots where you see the actual face of the person. Fleming shoots from behind to pay homage to the landscape of New York, making it as visually important as the person in the photograph. “[This shot] offers a more humble portrait of the subject,” explains Fleming. “It creates a sense of equality. A balance for subject and environment.” “Almost every shot has been planned,” says Fleming. She scouts the location to find the best (safest) part of the street to shoot and the best time of day for lighting. “Only one or two shoots have been completely impromptu, where I have literally chased someone and asked if I could shoot them for the project.” While some have griped about the integrity of the planned shot, Fleming’s style and idea have earned her collaboration with mega-brand Coach and numerous accolades.

29

ART

ART Fleming says that the reactions to this series have been overwhelmingly positive. With only about twenty streets still left to shoot, Downtownfrombehind has received its fair share of media attention in both the blogosphere and the fashion industry. It was featured in Vogue, Nylon, The New York Times, and The Huffington Post. There’s even a book deal on the table. Fleming’s goal was to have the series commercialized, and she is pleased by the warm reception and its success. “Looking at New York from any angle never seems to get tired,” she says of half of her subject. So how does she choose whom she’s going to photograph? Fleming tries to pick from a range of people who contribute to New York’s culture. Her goal is to keep a balance among the categories of people she comes across in her life. “[From] celebrated architects to restauranteurs, environmentalists to social media entrepreneurs, it’s about highlighting a generous cross-section of exciting individuals,” she explains. Fleming describes the selection of people she’s photographed as “organic”. She originally started the series with friends riding their bikes, and it unfolded from there. “For the most part, each subject has introduced me to the next.” With each introduction, a new story was revealed and photograph was captured. What’s next for DFB? Fleming thinks a thirty person shot with the Highline and its staff. After that, “the next phase is extending the project to create specials in other cities,” explains Fleming. “I will travel to Miami in December for an Art Basel special and to Australia in between.” DFB helps to personify the eclectic culture of NYC. “Everyone has a great story,” says Fleming. Whether you love the architecture of New York, the style of its occupants, or just want to see a fresh perspective, Bridget Fleming’s DowntownfromBehind is a series you’ll want to check out. FASHION

FASHION ACE GOES ERIN BARR

TO FASHION WEEK

The beginning of September brings falling leaves onto brand new Gucci booties and the feeling in Manhattan of excitement and anticipation of yet another season. Before the construction of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, there is the construction of the tents at Lincoln Center. It’s all lights and cameras. It’s New York Fashion Week. 40

Unfortunately school does not halt for fashion, and amidst adjusting to my new major of Fabric Styling at the Fashion Institute of Technology, I was asked to cover this glamorous, sacred week for MANIAC. Would it be grueling? Absolutely. Could I pass it up? Absolutely not. I had my Ace business cards in my bronze python Rebecca Minkoff clutch and my Canon camera on my sequined shoulder. I was ready to walk the concrete runway. In between my daunting course-load of seven FIT classes, I managed to cover five shows and three killer presentations. This Fashion Week, I aimed to focus on the newer, younger, up-and-coming designers. Don’t get this Fashion Ace wrong. It is with great gratitude that I have had the opportunity to attend miraculous, renowned designer shows with such time-consuming productions, but New York City has such fresh, cultured and insightful talent pouring out of acclaimed institutions, such as Parson’s New School for Design, as well as my own school, FIT. It is exciting to see younger designers, how far they have come, and which direction they are taking. Their collections inspire students like me. It gives me the sense that if I set my mind to it, my heart can take me anywhere. My first show of this season, I sat second row at Korean designer Demi Park’s Parkchoonmoo show. For spring 2013, Park chose to bring attention to the masculinity of a

uniform, while bringing relief to the ensembles through feminine silhouettes and construction. Shades of creams and whites took center stage for this collection. There were touches of South Korea’s national colors, blue and red, with add-ins of black leather vests and jumpsuits. Simplicity and structure created the mood for this collection, and this Spring our wardrobes can afford to go back to basics. Leave it up to Italian-couture designer Katya Leonovich to bring new meaning to the corset. Leonovich designed an iridescent, vibrant green corset and paired it with a sheer-wrap maxi skirt. The extra-terrestrial galaxy look has been a reoccurring theme throughout this new millennium, bringing back-to-thefuture touches and chrome-like, high shine. The Olympics are still on my mind, and apparently Daniella Kallmeyer’s, too. Her latest collection will inspire the sports enthusiast to run laps of excitement. Hair and makeup at Kallmeyer were athletic-chic, with tight, corn-row braids weaved back into a beautiful, voluminous ponytails or fishtail braids. The hair and makeup perfectly accompanied both solid black and white ensembles and some of spring’s most fantasized colors including tangerine, pale yellow, and royal blue. These looks reminded me of a modern-day, members-only golf outing (on Planet Chic, of course). No athletic ability required for Daniella Kallmeyer Spring 2013 to score you some serious points in the game of fashion next season. Rad Hourani took me on a trip to the moon and back, with chrome and leather unisex basics. The men wore chunky clog heels and sandals, the women wore conservative chrome smocks. Androgyny ruled this eclectic collection with pieces to fit both genders. Some highlights were pale pink button ups, burgundy red trenches, and silver skinny trousers. Gender stereotypes not welcome in Rad’s world. Fashion designer Erin Barr’s fifties timewarp presentation was like transporting to the ultimate swanky cocktail party, complete with Marilyn Monroe as a guest. Dress code was strictly enforced, inspired by the stiff contour lines of Frank Stella’s paintings. Barr’s chic and sophisticated collection for Spring 2013 will even make a tomboy antsy to dress the fifties part, with subtle, edgy masculinity exuding from the cut-out, sheer cocktail dresses and buttonup crop tops. When I entered Laura Siegel’s presentation on Bowery, it was as I’d been transported to the Midwest. The models stood like desert warriors ready to take on the sun and dunes, equipped with oversized accessories and hats and leather-strapped boots and sandals to protect them from hiking through hot sand. Two words to describe this vibrant and rugged collection styled by Parson’s grad and native Pittsburgher, Stacey CunninghamDesert Glory. The bohemian trend has taken the spotlight again, this time with vibrant hues of hot pink and lime green paired with deep-matte purples, burgundies, and chocolate browns. If you are a lover of sustainable textiles and designs, natural dying and hand-knitting, I may have just introduced you to your new favorite designer, Laura Siegel. Sachin + Babi definitely inspired the crowd to touch base

with their inner gypsy vagabond and folklore goddess. Billowy maxi skirts and denim jackets detailed with Indian beadwork and oxidized metallic sequins were key pieces in the collection. Inspired by the bohemian rhapsody lure of biker culture, this collection’s cargo jackets and embellished maxi skirts will raise your spirits for a new kind of cross-country journey. My new favorite accessories designer is, hands down, Heidi Gardner. Her event was filled with plenty of blood and guts to go around a room filled with fashion zombies. There were silver and gold pelvicbone bangles and skull head rings aplenty, sure to suit any couture monster. Heidi’s website describes this collection best. “This penchant for the macabre and lurid was honed through her adoration of Hieronymus Bosch, Salvador Dali, Otto Dix and Alfred Kubin. When combined with a passion for vintage thriller films such as The Shining, Clockwork Orange, and The Exorcist, her imaginary world became a remarkably dark and wondrous realm from which she develops her intricate and haunting designs.”

The extra-terrestrial galaxy look has been a reoccurring theme throughout this new millennium, bringing back-to-the-future touches and chromelike, high shine.

No longer boring, the blazer is the cool girl’s go-to piece. Even in prints, it’s perfect for work or over your favorite party dress. Embellishment is big this fall, and you shouldn’t be afraid to make a statement with your jewelry and your handbag at the same time. Still afraid of snake print? Snakeskin takes a more subtle cue with an oversized gold cuff bracelet. Leather isn’t for just bikers and bad girls anymore. It’s taking new forms in bright, sweet colors for all of your favorite tech accessories. Our pro tip - invest in something fun that you will want to wear from work through the weekend.

THE FEEDING TUBE DIET

50

With obesity rampant in America, many people turn to dieting in order to lose weight. Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach, Hollywood Cookie Diet, and Juice Cleanses are just some of the many diets that people try in order to shed pounds. One of the latest in diet fads is the K-E diet (short for Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition), also known as the “feeding tube diet”. This diet is popping up in America not as a way for obese people to lose weight, but instead as a way for brides-to-be to lose weight quickly before the big day. After being featured in newspapers and on television, the K-E diet has caused uproar across America. Is this diet safe? Or is it a diet fad that goes too far? MANIAC investigates this new trend in dieting. The prospect of losing ten percent of your body weight in just ten days seems very tempting for many brides, especially when they know they are going to be photographed every minute of their wedding day. According to Dr. Amesh Adalja, M.D., “Caloric restriction is the key to losing weight.” He advises that this restriction on calories should be done in a manner that does not cause vitamin or mineral deficiencies or dehydration. Also those suffering from chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or kidney disease, are not eligible candidates for the K-E diet. A healthy way to lose weight should be skipping desserts and exercise. The K-E diet is a high protein, no sugar, no carbohydrate diet. Sounds pretty normal, right? Wrong. The unique aspect of the K-E diet is that a feeding tube is attached through a person’s nose. Feeding tubes are usually used for patients who are unable to eat on their own, and the K-E diet is the first use of the feeding tube as a weight loss application. The feeding device contains a ten-day supply of a powdered food supplement (to be mixed with water), made entirely of protein and fat, amounting to a mere 800 calories per day. Patients may drink water, unsweetened

HEALTH tea, and black coffee during their treatment, but nothing else. Without sugar, your body is forced into ketosis, which burns up your stored fat. Participants of the diet carry the solution in a tote bag at all times, where it provides a steady 24-hour drip of nutritional supplementation. Weight loss or not, 800 calories per day is an extreme measure to take in preparation for a wedding. Most people need at least 1600 calories per day in order to survive. “Trying to fit in all of the nutrients needed

once food consumption resumes,” explains Mangieri. “It can also lead to binge eating or other forms of disordered eating, since food deprivation and restriction increase the risk of forming disordered eating habits,” she warns. After having several doctors weigh in on the K-E diet, they unanimously agreed that there are healthier methods to lose weight before you walk down the aisle. “There is no need for a tube feeding to get great weight loss results,” says Mangieri. A healthy diet

to meet our daily requirement while eating less than 1200 calories is near impossible,” explains Heather Mangieri, R.D., owner and nutrition consultant for Nutrition Checkup in Pittsburgh, PA, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The result of consuming a very low caloric diet can cause several not just unpleasant but life-threatening side effects. While on the K-E diet, patients are prescribed Miralax to help constipation, due to the lack of fiber in the diet and the low amount of calories. Aside from constipation, side effects include bad breath, gastrointestinal disruption, and kidney problems. Side effects can continue even after the removal of the feeding tube. “Eating only 800 calories per day can slow metabolism and result in faster weight gain

that is started well in advance, where one exercises and eats properly, is a much better way to ensure you lose weight and keep the pounds off. “A bride who wants to lose twenty pounds should start at least ten weeks before the wedding, allowing herself to lose two pounds per week with a healthy weight reduction plan,” Mangieri explains. Dieting should not be a one time crash course to fit into a gown. It’s about being proud of the way we are living our lives, and that includes how we eat and how physically active we are. Mangieri tells us, “The best way to lose weight is to learn how to make a calorie-controlled, balanced eating plan that includes foods that you like and can be maintained for a lifetime. It’s a lifestyle.”

So don’t miss out – download the app and satiate your inner Maniac. Casey Cid, the Woman Behind the App

Our philosophy is that if you are not one step-ahead, you are already falling behind.

As technology changes, so do the ways that people choose to market their companies. Enter Casey Cid of Media Thirty Seven. With a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication from West Virginia University, it’s obvious that Cid has intelligence, but what she also has is ambition, drive, and her very own business. In June 2010 she formed Media Thirty Seven, a digital marketing agency located in Morgantown, West Virginia. The company’s main strategy is to “focus on developing products and plans that help our clients reach their target audiences in all relevant media landscapes,” she says. In today’s world, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who does not own a smartphone – and those that do can’t seem to put them down. I guess we can thank Apple for that. Since Apple introduced the App Store in 2008, more than half a million apps (and counting) have been created – apps that remind you of your friends’ birthdays, keep track of your bank account, give you directions to the

nearest gas station, even those that serve as mini electronic versions of your favorite magazines, newspapers, and books. It seems there is nothing that an app can’t do. This fact is not lost on marketing firms like Media Thirty Seven who realize that if their own clients don’t embrace this digital world, they will be left behind. While Media Thirty Seven and Cid still provide marketing services, such as print campaigns, they are now seeing a high demand for web design and mobile application development. “Our philosophy is that if you are not one step ahead, you are already falling behind,” Cid says. “That philosophy means that we are constantly learning and implementing the newest technologies and communications tools to keep our clients’ brands fresh.” Media Thirty Seven’s goal is to provide relevant, impactful, and affordable marketing and communications services to small businesses, taking all forms and most notably, the form of an app. “As a smaller agency, we are able to provide big-agency products and services in a price range that is feasible for small businesses,” Cid says of the Morgantown-based agency. “We also believe in educating our clients on how and why they need to utilize new media.” And it seems clients, clients like MANIAC, are listening.

TYLER BLACKBURN The Charming Liar

54

One look at the cast of Pretty Little Liars, and you’ll be able to see its appeal. The cast is gorgeous and their characters are addictive. The show indulges in dark secrets, taboos, and badly behaved parents. Young women everywhere are hooked on the mystery series and crave the next episode’s spoilers. I had the pleasure of speaking with Tyler Blackburn, the latest permanent addition to the PLL cast.

Initially signed on for only four episodes of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, Tyler Blackburn became a mainstay on the hit series. His character, Caleb, has a checkered past and Tyler looks the part of the bad boy gone good with his Johnny Depp locks and chiseled face. In real life, Blackburn’s daily life is less questionable than his character. In every interview, including this exclusive with MANIAC, he is nothing short of a gentleman who just wants to serenade the right lady with a guitar and a home-cooked meal. Tyler was attracted to the role of Caleb Rivers because of the character’s wittiness and comebacks, qualities that Blackburn feels he also possesses. Aside from not wanting to pass on an acting job or paycheck, Tyler explains that the role of Caleb caught his attention because it was something different from his previous roles. Caleb is the suave and mysterious high school student that arrived from out of town with a troubled past. This role gave Blackburn a chance to be something that he wasn’t in his school days. In high school, he described himself as being “sort of an outcast that didn’t quite fit in.” He says he was someone that was “much more creative and artistic than social.” Today, Tyler says he is open-minded, emotional, and someone who wants to explore new things and evolve into a better person. While Blackburn is mainly focused on his

His worst lie? He stole money from a family friend and hid it in a bush.

acting, he’s juggling a budding music career as well. Right now he is just working with ABC Family to record some music. He has been singing for some time, but insisted that he’s not looking to switch from acting in the upcoming year and is just beginning to figure out his capabilities as a musician. No famous musicians are in his bloodline, but his dad works in the business side of the music industry, so he’s familiar with the scene. He remembered music always playing in his childhood home. If you want to steal a few songs from Blackburn’s playlist, just add “Wonderwall” by Oasis, “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve, and anything Bob Marley to your queue. The Black Keys are his favorite artist. However, if you’d rather hear Blackburn’s own voice, you can purchase his single “Find a Way” on iTunes.

While his single is about finding a way to a woman, Tyler dished that his not-so-secret crush is on Jennifer Lawrence. He’s all for Katniss Everdeen’s badass character in The Hunger Games. He loves how Lawrence can go from casual to looking like a Victoria’s Secret model in the blink of an eye, but the woman he’d most like to work with is Kate Winslet. Even after telling us his celebrity crushes, the MANIAC team has had the chance to meet Lucy Hale and knows that there’s no shortage of beautiful women on the set of Pretty Little Liars. Blackburn admitted it was part of the allure that drew him to the show. He saw a billboard of the four gorgeous lead female stars and thought that he could work beside them. He said that being with that much feminine energy can get a little bit overwhelming, but he’s comfortable in that dynamic. What does he do when he needs to unwind from the ladies? Yardwork. While we want to believe that Blackburn is just the good guy, he might just have some secrets that help him to play his devious character on the show. His worst lie? He stole money from a family friend and hid it in a bush. Not bad for nine years old. Whatever lies he might be telling me, any guy that will watch the HBO series Girls and admit to owning over fifty jackets is okay in my book.

Pittsburgh’s top chefs put on an impressive display for guests and fifteen judges to enjoy for THE Competition sponsored by C. Hackett and Cigna. Guests tasted samples of entrees, appetizers and desserts from all over the city in one delicious night. Some stand out dishes include the seafood lasagna from presenting sponsor McCormick & Schmick’s, Spoon’s hanger steak appetizer, and the short ribs from Jackson’s, which was voted best entrée of the evening. Meat & Potatoes did it again, winning Dish of the Year with their smoked pig wings. Savoy came away with People’s Choice for the second year in a row as well as Best Appetizer with their chocolate ravioli. The desserts were to die for between the pomegranate tart from Mediterrano, Café Chocolade treats, Giant Eagle Market District’s gelato, and the winning white chocolate cappuccino cannoli from the Grand Concourse. To complement the savory dishes, beer, wine, martinis and mojitos quenched everyone’s thirst. Engine House Winery was a hit as well as the Stoli Vodka martinis poured through an elaborate ice sculpture. While guests filled their stomachs, they also filled the dance floor to the sounds of the band No Bad Ju Ju throughout the night. Some guests even went away with gifts from the impressive silent auction. 56

WHEN CHEF ANDREW SEES A TOMATO HE DOESN’T LIKE,

The best part of it all is that 100 percent of this year’s proceeds from Savor Pittsburgh support the fight against prematurity at the Magee Women’s Research Institute and Foundation. Premature birth is the primary cause of death among newborns. Each year, more than half a million babies are born prematurely in the United States, which can also cause lifelong health problems and neurological disabilities. This year the Savor Pittsburgh committee joined Magee to aid in supporting the newborns and families dealing with prematurity. For more information, visit www.mwrif.org.

MARK WAHLBERG From film to fitness, and everything in between 60

FEATURE

Hair parted to the side and a jawfracturing history – after a superficial glance at his background, those are the only things that actor, filmmaker, producer, and former rapper Mark Wahlberg and I have in common. After a brief conversation with him however, it became apparent that there is much more to his handsome face and renowned talent for entertainment than what meets the eye. Or the first ten Google hits on the web. Dreaming big has landed him countless opportunities, his most recent being his partnership with GNC. Standing in front of the signage for his impressive new line with GNC, where I interviewed him at Stage AE, he playfully teases, “What am I promoting here?” Then he cuts to the chase and indulges his passion and pride for his GNC line MARKED. He promoted his newly formed partnership there, his appearance followed by a rock concert featuring 3 Doors Down, played on September 20, in the city housing the corporate headquarters of GNC: Pittsburgh. Mark’s deeply rooted passion and high inspirations for his new business venture are immediately apparent. “I’ve always wanted to be in the health and wellness business. I don’t just endorse products. I was passionate about health and wellness and that’s where the business went, and I hope to be as successful as I am with film and television. There’s a lot more I want to do with it, this is basically just the entry point. So hopefully we will continue to grow the business and inspire people to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Regarding his participation with the products in the line, he is surprisingly meticulous and involved in the process. He explains that he’s a part of it all; “Every single aspect – the science process, the packaging, the tasting…because the stuff that’s good for you usually doesn’t taste all that good. We were talking about doing this for two and a half years. It’s a process.” It wasn’t always product endorsements and fame for Wahlberg. He was raised in Boston and had a tumultuous childhood, filled with an impressive collection of legal altercations. The Boston Police Department and Mark became frenemies and probably knew each other on a first name basis by the time he turned sixteen. Today, he shows compassion for the juveniles undergoing the same moral dilemmas and punishments that he committed and served two decades ago. “It’s unfortunate that a lot of people are being rehabilitated and they’re being incarcerated. Prison is not a fun place.” In an effort to help children and young adults aspire and reach their potentials despite familial financial setbacks, he created the Mark Wahlberg Youth foundation. “We try to get people to get an education, especially juvenile offenders. They are still at that stage and have an opportunity to be rehabilitated and get an education. For me it’s always been to give people another chance. I turned my life around.” After multiple convictions and jail time, Mark did change his life around for the better and began the journey to permanently paving his way into Hollywood royalty. His path to stardom didn’t start out particularly glamorous, however. When asked about his strangest jobs that most people don’t know, he indulged, “I’ve driven a tow truck. I sold newspapers. I bagged groceries. I’ve had lots of odd jobs but I always took pride in what I did. I did it all.” Now he is married to his beautiful wife Rhea and is the father of four healthy children. His concerned parenting side comes out, as he talks about how hard he

tries to protect his kids while simultaneously teaching them to understand that not everyone is as fortunate as they are. When I asked him what he would say to his twenty-year-old self, if he could go back in time and chat with him, he said, “The problem is, he wouldn’t listen. That’s the problem. You know, if I could go back, obviously I would. There are so many things that my parents told me that now obviously I completely get. And now I’m trying to find interesting things to convince my kids that what I’m saying makes sense. But you know it’s difficult. You have to learn from experience.” Mark’s film and television careers have created massive waves in the industry both nationally and internationally. When asked about his desire to remake The Italian Job, he humbly replied, “You know what, I’m trying to stay away from the remakes. We try to find some original ideas and do original content. It’s difficult to make movies, and we try to make the best with what we have. I’ve done a couple of remakes and couple of them turned out really bad. I got a lot of crap for it.” His modest rendering of his acting career undermines how paramount his involvement was in molding the popular films like Renaissance Man, Boogie Nights, The Italian Job, Ocean’s Eleven, The Departed, and Shooter , to name a few. And yet Mark still dreams bigger. When asked what he would do with fifty million dollars and a collaboration with Apple, he replied, “With fifty million dollars? I think I would need a little more than fifty million dollars, but I would probably look to them for some ideas. They know what they’re doing. But you know, raise awareness and try to promote peace.” As for where it’s all going? Leave it to Mark Wahlberg to stand at nothing to ensure MARKED domination over the wellness, diet and supplement industry. “Hopefully in five to ten years we will have gyms all over the country and the inner cities. Hopefully we offer an opportunity for people to come in and learn about wellness and nutrition and we can start tackling the obesity problem.” Congratulations Mark, you’re not interested in an Italian Job remake, but your life after twenty is the only remake you are passionate about. The world is your treadmill; we need more people like you.

Turkey “A cosmopolitan hub of culture”

M

66

ost of us have heard of the song “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” with its catchy, yet annoying lyrics but how many of you actually have thought to visit this historic city and country? Not your everyday travel choice, we decided to visit Turkey as a follow-up to our trip to Egypt (See Maniac, May 2012). Most people associate Istanbul with thousands of years of ancient history, but today it’s much more than that. The city, spanning two continents, is a cosmopolitan hub of culture – combining history and sightseeing with the latest trends in food, shopping, art, and more – making Istanbul one of the hottest cities to visit in Europe. We extended our stay in Turkey to visit the billionaires’ playground, Bodrum, complete with its beaches, clear Aegean seawater, milliondollar yachts, and more, completely contrasting with the historic Constantinople. If you are looking for a jet setting vacation that combines thousands of years of history with essential modern luxuries – Turkey is the place for you! The country is primarily Muslim, located in Eastern Europe and Asia, bordered by the Mediterranean, Black, and Aegean Seas, with the Bosphorus strait separating the two continents. Generally considered located in the Middle East, Turkey is the world’s eighteenth most populous country and the thirty-seventh largest. The main tourist areas of the country are its most populous city, Istanbul, along with coastal cities such as Bodrum, Izmir, and Antalya. Unlike Egypt to the South, Turkey does get fairly cold in the winter, so the most popular time to visit is in the summer months.

LODGING The lodging in Istanbul is considered some of the best in the world. We stayed in one of the city’s most luxurious hotels, The Four Seasons at the Bosphorus (there are two Four Seasons in Istanbul – for the other see “Food”). This 170 room hotel, formerly a nineteenth century Ottoman palace, was converted to a hotel in 2008 and is located in the Ciragan part of Istanbul directly on the Bosphorus strait. The hotel is close to hot night clubs and restaurants nearby as well as the increasingly popular neighborhood Bebek (think Soho neighborhood in Manhattan). Besides offering incredible views, the hotel offers a waterside pool, full fitness center and spa with an Ottomanstyled Turkish bath, and much more. The

hotel, essentially sold out April through October, requires reservations to be made many months in advance. Unlike Egypt, tourism to Turkey is booming – so be prepared to pay accordingly, as rates start at $500 per night in the off season. We stayed in a courtyard-view Deluxe room which is very nice (even by Four Seasons standards) but lacked the view of the more expensive suites. One of the highlights of our hotel stay was booking the private Four Seasons yacht for a tour of the Bosphorus. The two-hour tour took us past many historic sites up and down the water. We saw many dolphins from the boat, right there in the city! Even with the bad Istanbul traffic, the hotel was less than thirty minutes from the Covered Bazaar, palaces, and mosques you will want to visit while you are there. If the Four Seasons is not in your budget, there are many other hotels with all the major international brands available at lesser rates. In Bodrum, the hotels are mostly beach oriented and spread out across an entire peninsula, so you will have to drive further in between restaurants, shopping, etc. We decided to stay at the Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay (www.kempinski.com), which overlooks a Bucolic blue water bay adjacent to the Aegean Sea. Only a short one-hour flight from Istanbul, you can tell you are on the way to paradise as you pass through the olive orchards and fig trees on the way to the hotel. The 174 room hotel, spread over

a hillside terraced with rooms, is a sprawling estate with a private beach, water sports center, a huge infinity pool, indoor pool, one of the largest spas in Europe, six restaurants, and much more. After four days at the hotel, we still did not explore everything we wanted to see – it is that big! Beach aside, a lot of people visit this property for the spa and go on multi-day spa or detox programs. As far as rooms go, we chose the Grand Deluxe room. It had a full panorama view of the bay and a huge flower and rosemary covered terrace, which was perfect for having a glass of wine to watch the full moon reflecting over the serene water. While warmer than Istanbul, Bodrum does get cold in the winter, so rates can range from $150 per night in the off season to more than $500 per night in the peak summer months. Though very beautiful, the hotel is in the middle of nowhere and is about a thirty minute taxi ride to downtown Bodrum, where the shopping and nightlife are waiting. The hotel attracts Turks and foreigners alike, and while we were there, Elizabeth Hurley was shooting a fashion spread.

CUISINE CULTURE Even though Turkey has primarily an overriding Islamic population, the culture is very forward-thinking and contemporary. Whereas we thought Egypt was slightly conservative, really Istanbul and Bodrum are not conservative at all. These cities are a melting pot of foreigners with a diversified Turkish population. We felt completely safe walking and touring on our own and no one harassed us. Even though we did not speak Turkish, it was easy to get around. Istanbul has some of the most famous historical sites in the world, including the Hagia Sophia (a basilica turned into a mosque), Blue Mosque, and Suleymaniye Mosque, all within walking distance of each

68

other. Also worth seeing in Istanbul is the Basilica Cisterns, Topaki Palace, and much more – you could spend weeks here. Think Rome. If you can be in Istanbul for more than four days, it would be worth it to be able to take your time. It is also worth hiring a guide so you can skip the lines and breeze through the sites. Bodrum has much less to see in terms of sightseeing, but there is the Bodrum castle and day trips to the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus. Bodrum even has a bar called The Billionaire’s Club – with places like this, you can see the culture is pretty easy-going and open to tourists!

Turkey has some of the best restaurants and food culture in Europe. While the Turkish people like their desserts, two really stood out - Turkish delight and baklava. These two items are everywhere – at the airport, on the street, in gift shops, etc. Unavoidable, but a good thing! As far as baklava goes, we visited the most famous shop, Karakoy Gulluoglu. This shop had at least a dozen types of baklava, even baklava ice cream, and they will seal it right there for you to take on the plane. It is fantastic. They also sell the Turkish delight candy in many flavors too. The other thing you must try is Turkish coffee. This coffee is not your everyday Starbucks espresso. This coffee is brewed right in the cup with the coffee remaining at the bottom. It is the strongest cup of coffee you will ever try. Make sure you do not go bottoms up! Istanbul and Bodrum both have a fabulous variety of restaurants. One of the most recommended things to do is to visit a fish restaurant on the Aegean Sea or Bosphorus, and eat a whole bass cooked in salt – one of the most amazing things! In Istanbul, I highly recommend dining at the Sunday brunch at The Four Seasons Sultanahmet, which was built in an old Turkish prison. The famous brunch is in a rose-filled quaint courtyard with foods of every type. We ate at some of the highest end restaurants while we were there, but no matter your budget, you will have a great food experience in Turkey.

SHOPPING Shopaholics beware; you are going to the right place! Istanbul is famous for their Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. With more than sixty covered streets and 3,000 – yes, 3,000 – stores, you will be in a shopper’s heaven for carpets, furniture, gold, jewelry, leather, art, souvenirs, and more. If you are looking for food, we recommend the nearby Spice Bazaar, which has every spice imaginable plus fresh saffron, dates, and nuts. It is definitely worth a visit to both of the bazaars, but be prepared to bargain for good prices. In Bodrum, the downtown area is filled with closed-off streets (right on the Sea) with stores of every kind. These streets are a must stop for every visit to the peninsula.

The next time you hear that annoying song, think of the adventure that awaits you visiting this wealth of culture in Turkey. It really is a “Turkish Delight” as the lyrics go. This was my fifth trip to Turkey. I keep going back to experience this exciting and cosmopolitan society infused with the history of the Ottoman Empire. The country is safe for tourists, and there really is something for everyone. Regardless of your budget, as you plan your next vacation – consider Jet Setting to Turkey. You will not regret it!

TRUTH LOUNGE

SOUTHSIDE’S TRENDY LITTLE HOTSPOT B Y C O DY N I C O L E W I E G A N D

From the moment you enter Truth Lounge, it feels as if you are no longer in Pittsburgh. Instead, you have opened the doors to some trendy locale in Soho, Greenwich Village, or even San Francisco. But don’t pinch yourself too hard, because you’re still in the Steel City. Southside has been notoriously linked to drunken escapades and wild nightlife, but this posh little hotspot is changing that stereotype.

Truth Lounge celebrated its grand opening on September 15, and drew in hundreds of chic guests. When owners Pete Kamaras and John Frentzos decided to open their own restaurant, the pair envisioned an adult hangout with an upscale but casual atmosphere. They also wanted to create a space where diners could relax without feeling rushed. The menu is made up of delicious dishes full of mouthwatering flavors. The large assortment and variety of choices is sure to cure any cravings you may have. Truth Lounge specializes in small plates, but also offers salads and entrees as well. Some favorites include the Lambsicles, Crab Cakes, Pulled Mozzarella Salad, and the Beef Tenderloin Sliders. Another admired dish is the Wild Mushroom Risotto, which is to die for – from experience, I can assure you it is perfection. All of the ingredients are fresh, even the tuna is flown in from Honolulu. Does it get any better? The bar itself is beautifully kept and stocked with a number of topnotch liquors. The Blood Orange Cosmo, one of Truth’s signature drinks, not only looks great but tastes great as well. Make sure to order a couple of those! Truth Lounge is located at 51 South 12th Street and seats about eighty. A private space is available upstairs, which is perfect for large dinner parties and meetings. In the mood for a late dining experience? The kitchen is open until midnight Monday through Wednesday and until 1 AM every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Not in the mood for quiet dining? Get loud and dance the night away with DJ 7UP each Friday and Saturday night at 11 PM. If you have an event coming up, celebrate at Truth, where the entire space is available for rent each Sunday. Truth Lounge is an experience like no other. The exposed brick, romantic lighting, and chic seating represent the epitome of “social dining”. A night full of amazing food and drinks will leave you wanting more. We promise you won’t regret this experience.
