Pretty Little Liars is my secret obsession and I was thrilled that you featured Lucy Hale on the cover of the February/March issue. I loved reading the cover story, she seems like she is so down to earth and I loved the photographs. It seems like Maniac is always ahead of the curve when it comes recognizing hot, new Hollywood talent like Lucy and I look forward to new discoveries in each issue.

I loved the fashion and style featured in the February/March issue. From the J’adore Paris fashion spread to style tips from Hilary Rushford, I couldn’t get enough. It’s nice to have a local magazine that features style in such a global way.

Graham, a native of Saratoga Springs, NY is currently pursuing an Associates degree in Fashion Merchandising Management and will pursue a Bachelors degree in Home Products Development in the fall. With over 685 votes, Graham says she’s always had a great support system of family and friends. “Everyone posted the link wherever they could, on their own Facebook walls, groups, blogs and forums,” said Graham. She explained that when she called home, her mother would answer the phone, “Hi thanks for calling the offices of the Lonnie Graham campaign.” Graham’s hobbies include photography and she says that New York’s beauty inspires her. “My true passion, however, lies in home fashions and interiors,” said Graham. When you hear the word America most people think of red, white and blue, a sense of freedom, and perhaps the Statue of Liberty. Here at Maniac it becomes a visual statement. In the world of fashion, America shapes the rest of the world and drives corporate culture and commerce. It’s the ready-to-wear to the rest of the streets across the globe. We believe it’s a freedom of sight and sound that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s the one place that you can change career paths as many times as you change outfits, and no matter how many times you redesign your own course it is the true individualism this country takes pride in. At Maniac, it becomes our signature. When crafting this issue we wanted to showcase someone who embodies these virtues and stands on top amidst hardships. We were lucky enough to catch Tara Reid in Los Angeles for an exclusive photoshoot and interview. Meeting Reid in person, I had to ask the inevitable question, “Why all the bad press and rumors during your profession.” She shrugged and responded bluntly, “Because sometimes life isn’t fair. I’m ready for a new chapter.” I also happen to be a huge klutz and fall everywhere; and the paparazzi can take this out of proportion.” Regardless of the situation we caught the refreshed Reid ready for a new chapter in her life and excited for the launch of her new movie, American Reunion. In this issue we take notice of a few new designers, We Are Handsome, and 11 Objects. We celebrate all the wonderful Pittsburgh bloggers from our first ever blogger event at the South Side Works. We illustrate what it takes to be one of the best salons and spas in Pittsburgh from downtown to surrounding neighborhoods – 14 in total. From one of our neighborhoods to national television, Alisha Gwen represents Pittsburgh on HGTV showcasing her extraordinary interior design skills on Showhouse Showdown. I also had the opportunity to reunite with our former intern, Kelsey Panicco, who is featured in our street style section. We took a journey with her into the Big Apple as she styled this issue’s fashion spread. As I stood beside her to document Blast from Baroque, she caught me in action during the shoot on the rooftop doing what I love to do most, reminding me that we are free to dream as big as we want and if we can just visualize for a moment we can accomplish anything. We live in the land of the free, and the home of the brave! So please enjoy the wild journey with us through the pages of this issue. Love,

Tara Reid does not want to talk about her past experience with having plastic surgery, nor does she want to talk about what may or may not have been said about her in past years by gossip blogs and mainstream media. Rightfully so, sometimes enough is enough, especially when a great deal of what’s been said has been unflattering and critical – party girl, train wreck or has-been – but in the wake of a country re-evaluating the effects of their harsh words and criticism of celebrities, Tara Reid faces a perfect opportunity to reinvent herself (or at least give people the opportunity to see the real Tara Reid) on the heels of the April release of American Reunion, the fourth installment of the American Pie franchise that made her so famous just 14 years ago. 7 - $ 0 0 , # 2 ( 6 2 9 , # # $ 3 , - 2 ? @ 2 ! % 4 ) $ # % 6 2 2 2 2 & + 101 4 - " & + 6 2 ( 6 2 " & - $ ) 2 + ' (" ) * 0 6 ) , / 2 ( 6 2 & , # , ) 1 & , 2 &"0 0 , , 2 2 2 2 + " $ - 2 ( 6 2 4 ' $ 2 * + 1 , / ) , - 2 2 2 2 ! Born

in Wyckoff, New Jersey, Tara Reid still carries that unmistakable raspy Garden State accent that most people can say reminds them of one of their best friends from college. She certainly reminds me of one of mine (best friends), Paula, also hailing from New Jersey. Everyone knows someone that reminds him or her of Tara Reid. Whether it’s the accent or sun-kissed, effortlessly wind-blown and tussled blond hair, it’s that American beauty, girl-next-door relatability that has made Tara a casting dream since the early age of five when she says she landed her first job starring in a Crayola commercial. “Hi, it’s Tara, I’m at the beach and I can’t hear you, let me call you right back from my landline,” she said to me as the ocean front wind rushed through our connection. “Hi, there that’s better, I’m at the beach and I had a bad connection,” she explained again as if she felt the need to reiterate that it wasn’t a personal fumble, but a technical difficulty instead. I immediately sensed cautiousness in her voice and delivery, perhaps a direct result of never shaking the feeling that the other shoe would drop or critics would lampoon her, a routine to which she’d become so accustomed over the years seemingly no matter what she did or how she presented herself in public. It was at that moment when I prognosticated that this conversation would be more than just about promoting a movie (though it wouldn’t hurt). I was poised to examine a celebrity, sure, but more importantly, and perhaps more cunningly, Tara was poised to position a mirror at me, a member of the mainstream media, with the hopes that I would arrive at the conclusion that she (as well as other perhaps overly-examined celebrities) actually does have a heart, she is sensitive, she wants to work and be taken seriously, and she is ready and needs the world to see her for who she is. That, she said, is her ultimate goal. In order to understand who Tara Reid is today, it would behoove you to examine where she has been and what she has done. However, as I mentioned previously, Tara still vigilantly protects the subjects about which she is simply sick of speaking and reading. Tara caught the proverbial acting bug at an early age, much like several of her notable classmates from Professional Children’s School in Manhattan such as Christina Ricci, Jerry O’Connell, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Macaulay Culkin. “I grew up watching those little girls in movies. I wanted to be Drew Barrymore,” Tara explained about her inspiration to act. “Professional Children’s School was amazing. It allowed us to develop a craft at such a young age. We 14

would take classes and if we had an audition in the middle of the day, we were permitted to just leave and go about our business,” she said. Tara quickly learned that her business was commercials, starring in over 100 spots including Jell-O, McDonald’s and Milton Bradley. And, just as any actor hopes, commercial spots segued quickly to a spot on the hit television show, Saved by the Bell: The New Class. “I moved to Los Angeles in 1997. I worked here on-and-off for years prior to that when I spent summers with my aunt,” she recalled of her transition from New Jersey to Tinsletown. “I knew nothing about fame when I came here and I never felt like I had to make it,” Tara explained when asked if she felt pressures of Hollywood at an early age. That unbridled thinking and laissez-faire attitude towards the ramifications of her daily actions on her own celebrity status is perhaps the reason she was so easily targeted in years past, not only by the media but also by people in her own circle who took advantage of her, an anecdote that she shared during her photo shoot with April Hubal for the purposes of this article. In 1998, Tara landed what is now referred to as her breakout role in The Big Lebowski, a standout cult classic amongst Generation Y. Subsequent movie roles included Cruel Intentions, Urban Legend and most notably and successfully American Pie (1999), her first film to reach number one at the box office. The floodgates opened to roles in American Pie 2, Josie and the Pussycats and National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, another oddball cult classic that she added to her repertoire. It was around this time that Tara started to rack up more than her fair share of gossip magazine covers that pictured her stumbling out of nightclubs, flubbing her words after long airline flights or just walking on the beach, a privacy that most people would assume to be granted but not such the case when you’re engaged to a cultural pop icon in his own right at the time, MTV veejay, (Video D.J.) Carson Daily. The engagement was called off in June 2001. Sick to death of speaking about these subjects, Tara explained, “Look, the only difference between me and any other college-age girl was that my regular experiences with partying and having fun like any normal college student were caught on camera. Every move I made was spun to make it look like I was completely out of control and I wasn’t. I was having fun and living life like anyone in his or her early 20’s should. It was so long ago. I’ve grown up. I’m over it! Let’s move on, people.” When questioned about plastic surgery, a subject that garnered more blog posts that one would see fit for such a trivial pursuit in Hollywood of all places, Tara became agitated. “I don’t know why people still talk about this. Yes, I had my boobs done. Who hasn’t? Plastic surgery is not that interesting, Again, let’s move on, I’m over it,” she pressed. Her words to me were frustrated. I made it a point to tell her that my purpose in asking about those past experiences wasn’t to embarrass her or make her feel uncomfortable, but rather to examine the reasons that her career had been sidelined by some professional misfires and questionable public personal actions. It was at that moment that it occurred to me to question myself; why did we (media and audiences alike) care at all, and why haven’t we moved on? And, quite frankly, what right do any of us have to judge her or any celebrity so harshly? After all, they are human, just like us. It is us that idolizes celebrities and places an almost unattainable goal of achieving perfection on all fronts. We’ve never been more acutely aware of how this pressure can effect, and in some cases cause, the personal and physical demise of celebrities

turmoil of weighing whether starting a career instead of a family was the right choice. She’s so relatable,” Tara said of her role. The bottom line is Tara Reid is relatable. There’s something about her that has enticed us to watch her over the years, for the right reasons or not. Whether people like to admit it or not, Tara reminds you of your one friend that you’ve lost touch with but continue to check on and giggle about whilst browsing photos on Facebook or, in this case, on PerezHilton. com. You know she’s that refreshingly physically and verbally unguarded girl next door. She’s that regular girl who loves to dress up sometimes and have a good time, or adversely is just as comfortable in jeans and beachwear. She’s that girl who loves to love everything including men with whom she’s had some notable relationships that inevitably raised some eyebrows but from which she gracefully moves on. “I am single now. I am happy. Love is not easy, and it takes a lot of work, but I believe in love,” Tara romantically explained. Whether her love of travel, which she claims is the one constant love in her life (she’s traveled to over 60 countries) takes her around the world, or perhaps the most recent press tour for American Reunion, Tara Reid is popping up all over the place again, this time, however, on her own terms and, in more flattering terms from the media. Recent headlines include, “Tara Reid Dazzles on the Red Carpet” and “Farewell, Tara Reid the Hot Mess.” Looking more beautiful, healthier and happier than ever, Tara Reid is poised for a comeback, and there is nothing America loves more than a good comeback story. She’s currently reading scripts as pilot season approaches.

I am ready to go back to doing what I love, and I wish people would give me that chance. and posthumously Amy Winehouse or the great, Whitney Houston.) Tara Reid is quick to point out, however, that she never wants to be compared to any of them, that they simply aren’t comparable. “I am not Lindsay Lohan. I’ve never been late to work. I am extremely professional. You can talk to anyone I’ve ever worked with and they will tell you that I take my work very seriously. I’ve never been in trouble. I’ve never been arrested. It seems like the backlash and punishment for my career doesn’t really fit the so-called crime,” she pontificated. “I am ready to go back to doing what I love, and I wish people would give me that chance,” she implored. And, upon sharing these statements with me, that is exactly what Tara is doing. Once again joining the entire original cast of American Pie, Tara reintroduces her character, Vicky Lathum. “It was so great to rejoin my friends and film this movie. Everyone can relate to some character in this movie, which is why I think people loved it so much the first time around. When you meet Vicky again, she is living in New York and she’s a career girl. She returns home for her high school reunion and is faced with the same issues that a lot of women in their early 30’s are faced with, that inner 16

My fashion blog is a documentation of my personal transformation from Andy to Andrea in the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. The title of my blog, “Before the Devil Wore Prada,” is obviously inspired by one of fashion’s greatest films of all times, The Devil Wears Prada. If you’ve seen this movie, you don’t watch it for the actual storyline—No, you watch it for the heart, soul, and core of the movie. You know, the part where Andy turns into this fabulous designer wearing, heel sporting, Wonder Woman…Andrea. You watch it for the clothes, the shoes, the handbags, the belts, the bangles, the “ugh, that is too cute”s, and the “why don’t I have that?”s. Golden movie. No, I’m not Andrea…yet. And I am definitely far…ffaarr from Andy. But what Andrea and I do have in common, besides aspiring to be prominent journalists, is that heart-tugging infatuation for fashion. So I’ll begin there…until I get some Prada in my life.

Janine Bonilla, 24, is a grad student at Point Park University and will be receiving her MBA this Spring. She began The Pittsburgh Look last year in reaction to GQ magazine voting Pittsburgh the 3rd Worst Dressed City in America. Although she is not native to Pittsburgh, she believes that Pittsburgh has a lot to offer both in style and entertainment, and wants to express that throughout the local Pittsburgh community and the rest of the country who may view Pittsburgh as a tacky city where everyone walks around in football jerseys and sweatpants. The Pittsburgh Look started originally as a pure fashion blog; taking street style pictures and talking about who is wearing what, but it quickly expanded into other forms of art after Janine realized how talented (as well as stylish) the people of Pittsburgh really are. She began to interview local musicians, artists and attending local events, which has shaped the evolution of her blog. The Pittsburgh Look is now, a fashion and arts blog dedicated to revamping the city’s cultural image. It is made to encourage the younger population of Pittsburgh to get out and take advantage of the more intellectual forms of entertainment that the city has to offer and that being cultured is in. The blog covers local boutiques and designers, restaurants and food stands, local events, independent artists and galleries, the local music scene, nightlife and street style. Janine likes to blog about anyone who is doing something independent, innovative, and interesting in the city. She feels that Pittsburgh is a blooming city chalk-full of interesting, quirky people doing some very creative things – you just have to “look.” 21

Once upon a time, as a little girl, fashion was what ran wild among my imagination. If fairytales and monsters were allowed to be real, so were my outlandish, yet innocently sophisticated outfits at the age of seven. I never let anyone tell me what to wear, because I thought I knew I was allowed if I saw it in a fashion magazine. No one was my judge other than the editorial bibles I referred to when someone asked me why I was wearing something too dressy, out-of-date, or, the least bit “unseen” within Pittsburgh. In my eyes, style has always been about being the girl or the woman I want to show the world. It has always been about expressing a higher form of art without having to paint, that showed I had a passion; one that would create the rest of my life, and all of the dreams inside of my head. One definition of style that I have decided and remained in my mind: Style is the creative and confident pursuit of fashion from within, to create as many different versions of you as possible! Style is not about one look, one size, or one trend. It is a curious, intuitive feeling that we all endure. This feeling feeds off of inspiration all around us in our daily lives. The difference between good style, and a good sense of fashion, is that good style cannot be touched. Everybody’s style is individual, which is the most beautiful and interesting part about fashion. It is crucial not to diminish or burry that spark of adrenaline when you see a new dress in a fashion magazine, or an old vintage sweater you want to pull off but are afraid to. If you run with the crowd, you will lose a sense of your being, and an opportunity to touch lives in a different way other than socially or physically. That is what strikes me most. When I style myself or dress up, I ask myself two questions. What kind of woman do I want to be today, and what kind of mood am I in, physically and mentally? Then I dress like it. Dressing like a different personality other than my own, inspires me to live culturally and socially. It excites me to experience different versions of myself and prevents me from ever feeling dull. I like to be a little bit of everything and everyone, so I know I’m not missing out on what life has to offer. Always brainstorm who you want to be, it will change each day! The rewarding part is how that goal shines through your ensemble. Pittsburgh native, and former Maniac intern, Kelsey Panicco serves as the New York style correspondent for Maniac Magazine. A student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Kelsey is a stylist, fashion insider and music addict. You can follow Kelsey’s take on what’s new and inspiring in the world of fashion by tuning in to her blog, Fashion Ace (fashionacekelsey.tumblr. com), or on Maniac’s own blog (www.maniacmagazine.com). 29

ART

With less than a year under their collars, Eleven Objects has made a statement in the fashion world, one collar at a time. Founded by Linh Thi Do and Christine Rhee, the fall/winter of 2011 marked the first season for the booming business. The friends decided to start the company when they simultaneously decided that their wardrobes would be vastly improved by a different kind of accessory. And instead of adding more tops, jewelry or shoes to their collections, they opted for a high-fashion collar. “Linhthi and I were musing about how much we wanted a wardrobe of detachable collars,” Rhee said. “And then we realized that we could just make them.” Each had a variety of experience to bring to the table. Do previously worked in product development at TSE and Alexander Wang, as well as production for YEOHLEE and doo.ri, while Rhee ventured in designing her eponymous line, CRHEE, which was featured in Marie Claire, WWD and Teen Vogue. Together, the pair would be unstoppable, leaving a mark with their unique designs. Eleven Objects produces chic, removable collars that add an effortless coolness to any outfit. Embellished

with silk, buttons, studs and even Swarovski crystals, the collars clasp on easily to any outfit. MANIAC recommends pairing a studded collar with a simple black tank or add an ultra-hip burnt orange collar to caramel browns and hot pinks for this season’s highlyfashionable color blocking. Best sellers include the tan pony hair with brass studs, the black silk twill with Swarovski crystals and the pineapple printed collar sleeves our are best sellers. Do’s personal favorite is the navy rattan with Swarovski crystals from Spring 2012 and Rhee’s is the navy silk twill with genuine coral and Swarovski crystal embroidery. Eleven Objects has made groundbreaking strides, with people everywhere taking to the not-so-typical accessory. “I think they’re drawn to the same things that we were,” Rhee said. “It’s a way of transforming your wardrobe and putting your own mark on your clothing. For example, your trusty black dress turns into a different dress with a tan pony hair studded collar.” So what should we expect to see from Eleven Objects in the future? Rhee told MANIAC, “More luxury garment based accessories that you don’t even know that you want yet!” 31

SALVAGE Design (62?"$0)$#2('*%+

Salvage Design, based in Huntington Beach, California, makes unique, one-of-a-kind wall art and furniture out of well-worn woods, reclaimed woods and found vintage objects. The designs are custom and handcrafted, with no two pieces alike. With modern designs and tongue-in-cheek phrases, an exclusive piece adds a burst of freshness to a room and is the perfect accent to any contemporary home. The company, which started in December 2010, produces everything from tables to wallboards, to petleash holders and pet divans. The art is witty, stating a pop culture phrase but in an obvious yet new light. The majority of the products are custom made, but owner Heather Roth and her designers also create pieces on a whim, like the Dirty Bit coat rack wallboard, fashioning hooks out of rusty old drill bits. Other pieces include wallboards that read Turn Me On with a light bulb attached to it or I Just Called to Say I Love You with an antique-looking telephone, a coat hook that reads Hung Up on You and a garden table that simply says dwell. “Our tendency to incorporate word play and irony into our pieces whenever possible gives them a sense of humor and accessibility, which our customers seem to appreciate since design can often come across as intimidating or overly serious,” Roth explained. A lot of people may describe the pieces as rustic because of all the reclaimed wood, but they’re actually quite modern, with clean lines and designs based on simplicity and functionality. Roth said she has a direct hand in each and every piece Salvage Design Company produces. “Often, I will design and build the entire piece myself, but as business continues to grow we’ve begun to employ several local artisans to help with the welding and woodworking,” she told MANIAC. “At the very least, I am always the one to refinish the wood on a piece. This is my favorite step of the process. I love cleaning and sanding the dirty old boards, and finding the right combination of glazes, stain and finishes to bring out the true beauty of the wood.” The wallboards range in price from $110 to $2400+, depending on the size, materials and various attachments the customer chooses. The furniture, which is similarly

customizable, also ranges in price, with headboards starting at $1195 and dining tables starting at $2995. Chances are, whatever you want for your home, Salvage Design can produce it. “We’ve built coffee tables, bars, console tables, benches and daybeds. Each piece and price is unique,” Roth said. “We love the challenge of working within a customer’s budget and design constraints to produce an original, personal and functional piece that begs to be used often and is wellloved.” Roth, a dog lover, has two Puggles, Wren and Libby. Her pups were the inspiration for one of Salvage Design’s very first pieces, and, according to Roth, they continue to act as models and spokes-creatures for the line. Roth decided to design pet divans not only for her dogs, but also because of her passion for a welldecorated home. “So often, pet beds are functional at best, but downright unseemly at their worst. Eventually, I couldn’t take staring at our faded, dilapidated donut bed for one second longer and I went on the hunt for a dog bed that would complement our home décor instead of detract from it,” Roth reflected. “When I couldn’t find what I wanted, I decided to make a pet bed from an old trunk I’d salvaged from a neighbor’s back alley way. And thus, the very first Antique Trunk Pet Divan was born.” (A divan is a piece of couch-like sitting furniture. Roth thought using a synonym for pet bed was appropriate, since the pieces themselves are an alternative to the norm.) Salvage Design Company produces two main types of pet divans, those made from repurposed antique trunks and those built from reclaimed wood. The antique trunk beds vary in size due to the limitation to the types of trunks Roth can find or has on hand and cost $395. The reclaimed wood divans are more flexible, since each bed is built to order. The reclaimed wood divans come in three standard sizes (SM 24”x 18”x 5.5”, MD 36”x 24”x 5.5”, LG 48”x 28”x 5.5”), but can be custom ordered in just about any dimensions. The small bed costs $240, the medium $280 and the large $320. Roth isn’t the only dog-lover in the family. She said her mother-in-law, Betsy, sews each bed cushion by

hand. The beds are extremely comfortable and practical. “The reclaimed army tent material we use is both washable and virtually indestructible,” Roth said. “It gets softer with each wash, and I can personally vouch for its coziness, since I’ve made several pillows and throws out of it for myself.” Salvage Design is ready to produce more pieces with custom function this season. “We just finished an awesome Wrapping Bench in raw steel and reclaimed barn board for a client’s giftwrapping room, complete with an antique paper roll holder and vintage tin string cutter,” Roth said. “And, a truckload of vintage finds just came in from mid-coast Maine, one of our main salvaging grounds. There are a number of trunks, which will go quickly as pet divans, and a stack of old wooden toolboxes that we’re going to turn into nightstands.” Roth named her business based on the purpose she hoped to fulfill. “The name for Salvage Design Company works because it is completely descriptive of what we do,” Roth said. “We salvage vintage, often unwanted items and breathe new life into them using creative design techniques. The use of the word company in the name lends itself well to the often-industrial nature of our designs.” A novelist, Roth always had a creative side. But her passion for starting a business was more practical than lustful. “The company was started with a clear vision, the desperate need to clean out my garage. I’m only partly joking,” Roth said. “But, for the sake of my husband’s sanity (he was barely able to walk through the garage for the better part of a year, let alone pull a car into it), I have to say I am beyond grateful that other people seem to share my same sense of humor, and to enjoy the work I’m producing, just as much as I do.”

When we think of reality television, we see visions of Snookie in handcuffs and Kim Kardashian’s elaborate wedding (and just as elaborate divorce). Unfortunately, we tend to overlook how Pittsburghers represent our city on national T.V. We all remember Hines Ward’s tango and the epic screaming fits on Dance Moms, but our everyday residents seem to have just as much talent and personality. It’s refreshing to see someone who is a young, successful local girl like Alisha Gwen on network television. Alisha, an interior designer, appeared on Showhouse Showdown, a television show that aired on March 3, 2012 on Home and Garden Television. After graduating from West Virginia University in 2003, Alisha conquered the design world in her “wild and wonderful” hometown. Two years ago, she set her sights on Pittsburgh, where she ultimately found her niche. She now works as a designer at Davin Interiors, with owner Cathy Davin. The majority of her work is residential, but she also designs for small, commercial businesses. Her unique young, fresh taste makes her stand out and thrive in the Pittsburgh market among some of the old-school designers. She is known for creating a flexible environment, allowing families the space to rearrange and change the décor of a room throughout the seasons. Her technique incorporates classic style with modern looks, with an emphasis on color and clean lines. “Every space should be beautiful and functional or else you miss the mark,” she said. “After all, it is a living space.” It was just another day at work for Alisha when she received an e-mail with an application to be on HGTV’s design show. She knew the show would be a good fit and quickly put together a paragraph about her

design aesthetic, five words that describe her and a small portfolio of her work. The producers liked what they saw and e-mailed her back on the same day to set up an interview. A few weeks later, she got the call from producers to tell her she was in. Alisha said she was speechless, which apparently is quite rare. Alisha’s reality TV adventure began filming last summer. If you are unfamiliar with the show, (it’s the number one design show in Europe) here’s the rundown. The show sets up a hypothetical situation and target market for two designers, providing them with the same budget and time frame. With no restrictions or direction, the designers are off to transform an empty show home into a livable one. The designers choose everything from kitchen tiles to door knobs, and sofas to curtains. Alisha’s episode is set in the Mystic Ridge Heartland Home development in Cranberry, and her competition is a designer from Philadelphia. The Pittsburgh episode brought out the largest crowd ever, with over 800 people in the audience. The first 150 people cast their vote in the final decision on the winning design. Although she didn’t win this one, she stayed true to her design aesthetic, which is sure to place her on top of many challenges yet to come. Typically an open book, Alisha reveals parts of her work through constant updates of her daily life on her designer’s blog. Yet, she did not take well to having her every move documented on film. She was nervous and not quite herself during the first day of filming. But host Bob Guiney, former “Bachelor,” brought her out of her shell for a successful week of filming with a wonderful crew. Of course, there was some drama. After all, what is reality TV without some sort

of song and dance? We’re not talking bar fights and scandal here, but there were legit roadblocks in the design process. Long hours, missing furniture and broken chair legs upon delivery did create some stressful moments for her, but she learned how to cope. She said she appreciated the journey and the variety of great people she met. She even learned a valuable lesson firsthand. “If you want things done right, you need to do it yourself,” she said. Throughout the process, Alisha stayed true to herself and her design style. She knew this was her chance to prove herself. It just so happened her self-discovery aired on television earlier this March, allowing a national audience to witness Alisha’s renowned design aesthetic firsthand. We have a feeling that those of you who sat on your own couch and watched the show may have felt the need to revamp the design of your own home. Interior design was always in Alisha’s blood. She comes from a line of entrepreneurs, and always knew she would make a name for herself. Since childhood, she would decorate her Barbie dream house and rearrange her bedroom. “It wasn’t something that I chose, it was something that I just did” she stated. From sprucing up her Barbie playhouse to furnishing luxury homes on HGTV, 26 year-old Alisha Gwen continues to chase her dreams. And she wants other MANIACS to do the same. “Life is too short, so do something you’re passionate about and if you’re not sure what you’re passionate about, figure it out,” she said. And while you’re finding your passion, Alisha can use hers to create something you will one day call “home.”

Q&A Mathews landed an internship at The Tonight Show with Jay Leno his senior year of college (at the University of La Verne), and is still involved with the show 10 years later. He currently works as a correspondent and creative consultant. He knew that he would always have a home at The Tonight Show. “When it started happening, I realized this is how it’s going to happen. I always knew I was going to be on TV,” Mathews reflected. “There is no set path to get there and you have to be on constant alert for the possibility of a tiny crack of light, and there’s a door you can open on the other side of it.” While interning, Mathews had some of the best experiences of his life. Highlights include shopping in London with Gwyneth Paltrow, jumping out of an airplane, covering countless Academy Awards and two Olympic Winter Games and being there as the ball dropped at midnight in Times Square. “You name it and I’ve done it,” he said. With Red Carpet season coming to an end, Mathews reflected on his experience (which he loved) covering numerous events. “E! has brought me on as a member of the Red Carpet team and I get to be live,” Mathews gushed. “There’s nothing like live TV. I don’t like to do things more than once because it becomes stale and the audience notices. Live TV can be a disaster or a break.” Mathews’ favorite Red Carpet moment this year was Brad and Angelina at the Golden Globe Awards. “I was standing near the entrance of the Red Carpet and I saw Brad get out of the car, looking amazing, and he opened the door for her, and it was just a moment.” Mathews said his role in the pop culture world is a la carte, since he has dabbled in a little bit of everything. But he is humble, and hungry to make himself a permanent fixture in society. “It’s amazing and I’m so super grateful,” Mathews said about his opportunities. “But I still don’t feel like I have a real job, and I still don’t feel like I made it. I haven’t gotten there yet, but I will get there.” And how will he know when he’s officially “made it?” “When I have a steady paycheck and a business card.” “I don’t doubt I’m successful, I doubt I made it” Mathews explained. “I never have questioned that I deserved it. Also, I never gave up.” Most people know Mathews as a weekly regular panelist on Chelsea Lately. Anyone

who watches the show knows how funny, outrageous and brutally honest Mathews, as well as the other roundtable panelists, can be. It almost seems scripted, but Mathews promises it’s not. “What gets on the air is exactly how it is on Chelsea’s show,” he explained. “We get the topics a little before we go out there, so I don’t know what anyone else is going to say. There’s no rehearsing on that show.” Mathews’ dream was set in motion when Handler took a vacation and asked him to host her show for a week. “When they asked me to host, the feeling I had was the same feeling when I got a shot on air at The Tonight Show,” he said. “I was not nervous at all. This is the dream I had since I was a little kid. It was my opportunity to lose, and I wasn’t going to lose it.” When the red light goes on and the audience starts cheering, Mathews said he locks in. This opportunity gave his dream validation, and he knew he’s right where he’s supposed to be. He told MANIAC that Handler is a busy lady, so when she’s on a temporary leave from the show, he’ll be the one filling in as its host. “She has such an amazing heart. There’s room for everybody,” Mathews said of Handler. “Some people get success, Chelsea gets success and everyone around her gets success. I can’t say enough about her.” And what would Chelsea Lately be without Chuy? Mathews loves seeing him in action. “Chuy is amazing. He always says ‘Hello gorgeous!,’” Mathews disclosed. “I think he’s smitten with me.” Mathew got to interview numerous celebrities during his week as host of Chelsea Lately, including Dot-Marie Jones. “You get to talk to really interesting people who do really interesting things and try to get something out of them that no other interviewer can,” Mathews said of his experience as a host. “If you create those moments that are buzzworthy, you’re doing the job right.” After years of hard work, Mathews’ dream is finally coming true. He is currently shooting pilots for his own talk show on E! Network, which is being produced by Handler’s Borderline Amazing Productions. “I always wanted to be a talk show host since I was little. That’s what I’m supposed to do,” Mathews said. “We’re really close, we’re on the edge of doing it.” Handler is giving Mathews pointers on hosting his own show. “She’s helping me

develop my voice,” he said. “I understood the role of being on the podium by being on Chelsea’s show. She gave me chance to develop my point of view.” He said having his own talk show is like having a piece of real estate on the air where he can put the energy out he wants and interview who he wants. “I want to make people like my mom happy. That’s the goal, that’s the dream,” Mathews told MANIAC. But the ultimate dream? “To have a family, retire and raise a family,” he said. “And be honorary mayor of Palm Springs.” Mathews said he thinks the key to a successful talk show is having a host with a point of view who can make people laugh while interviewing interesting subjects. “I’m going to get it totally right. It’ll be a talk show, but it will be my talk show,” Mathews said. “Imagine if I had a ship that I was driving just myself. I really want to create something to make people smile for 30 minutes or an hour. Everyone I know who lives in the real world is struggling with jobs, money and family, and at some point in the day you need something to turn on and forget. I want to make people happy.” Although a part of his heart will always belong to Handler, his real celebrity crush is Justin Timberlake. “He doesn’t know, but our love affair has been going on for a long time,” Mathews revealed. “I’m all about JT. I know every word to every NSYNC song, and I used to cut his photo out of posters. If I was single, I’d hyphenate my last name [to Mathews-Timberlake]. Mathews also guest stars on the hilarious E! show After Lately. He said the show is based on reality and he’s enjoyed being on it both last season and this season. “That show makes me L.O.L.,” Mathews giggled. “I just love it, it’s so funny. It’s weird to be friends with [the co-stars] because I’m such a fan of them.” Mathews is writing a book, due out next spring. He said it’s the best thing he’s ever done. “It’s funny with such a positive message without being cheesy. It’s about what it’s like when you’re not the norm and want to fit in, but instead you celebrate what makes you different instead of hating it and what opportunities open up,” Mathews said. “I can’t wait for my kids to read it when they exist. Its hard writing a book about yourself, and you can’t be the hero all the time. You have to tell the good, the bad and the ugly and I did.” With his busy schedule, Mathews managed to find a little more time to 53

dedicate to being a spokesperson for Jenny Craig. He’s lost 40 pounds and feels better than ever. “I prefer to be called a spokesmodel, but I can’t contractually get them to agree to call me that,” Mathews joked. “[Losing weight] is so doable. I’ve always been an idiot when it comes to food, I don’t understand it. Jenny Craig armed me with the knowledge of how to eat and there are really no bad foods.” E! named Mathews one of the 30 most outrageous celebrities, but he insists he’s rather boring. “I get to do fancy things, but on a normal day to day basis I don’t want outrageous. I just want a nice life,” Mathews said. “Brunch, happy hour, staying home with my dogs and watching my DVR make me terribly happy.” Mathews’ guilty pleasures include Chopped on The Food Network and House Hunters on HGTV, although he said he watches anything related to food, real estate or design. And he thoroughly enjoys Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Modern Family. Mathews is currently touring the nation, speaking at colleges. He talks about his success and encourages students to follow their dreams. “I tell kids it’s totally possible. It’s really hard, but if you do it, it’s worth it,” he said. The student government arranges to have Mathews speak at each school, which inevitability brings him back to his glory days. “I was at the University of Central Florida and joined the kids at the bar afterwards,” he said. “I bought everyone a round.” It’s no doubt that Mathews is going to be a constant in pop culture very soon. But how does he himself in the next five to 10 years? “Really in shape,” he said. “I’ll have a successful show, a baby or two and a pool. You know you made it when you get a pool. That’s the dream. I’ll lounge next to it with my really toned body.” Mathews resides in Los Angeles with his partner Salvador and his two dogs, Louise and Mijo. Follow him on his blog, helloross. com.

In Spanish, the word “hacienda” denotes a large, luxurious home. The Pittsburgh store of the same name is embracing the idea of luxury by selling unique furniture to fill anything from a true “hacienda” to a small downtown apartment. Did I mention the furniture is sustainable too? “Hacienda is a place to find unique, beautiful and funky furniture,” said Shannon Zelina, a store employee. “Our eclectic style can integrate into all homes.” The store, which is located in the Strip District, sells a variety of rustic, modern style beds, tables, chairs and upholstered furniture items along with accessories to tie them all together. Unique pieces include a wooden coffee table with iron accents and a “bar trunk,” which appears to be a vintage trunk until it is opened to reveal a wine rack 56

and small bar. The furniture embraces current industry trends by moving away from looks that are completely modern toward clean lines, allowing for a mixture of new and old pieces. “Basically, the current trend is a melting pot of modern design mixed with reclaimed and exotic standout pieces, all working together with traditional and antique elements. Hacienda fits the movement perfectly,” Zelina added. Though the furniture offered is stylish and unique, this is not its only appeal. The furniture Hacienda offers is also sustainable, which means it is made from recyclable materials and is built to last. “There are many principles that make furniture “sustainable.” For example, pieces featuring reclaimed wood, or recycled parts

manufactured by companies with fair trade certification,” Zelina said. “Each piece should be finished with water based, nontoxic stains and product packaging should be designed to eliminate extraneous waste.” According to these specifications, the store has selected four manufacturer’s furniture to feature, including Four Hands, Environment Furniture, TerraSur and Urban Woods. “We do our homework on each company,” said Zelina. “Once we consider a company to meet our standards, we base our decision to offer their products based on quality and style. It is hard to find truly talented designers with a commitment to the sustainability process.” In addition to being committed to serving the environment, Hacienda is also committed to serving their immediate Pittsburgh community. Zelina said, “We work with both The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Carlow University’s Interior Design departments to educate students on sustainability and “green” design.” Furthermore, the store supports local artists by featuring their work as a compliment to furniture displays. “From time to time we have solo art events at the store in which the artist can display their work exclusively. We even promote the event for them,” added Zelina. Because of the store’s commitment to the environment and community, it seems to be a hit among Pittsburghers of all ages. “We have a great mix of young and old, single and married customers,” Zelina said. “We try to carry collections that offer a variety of style to appeal to the majority of consumers.” These factors are not just what draw people in though. As Zelina said, “We offer beautiful, unique and one-ofa-kind furniture that also happens to be sustainable.”

STYLE

She landed the role of Glinda in Wicked straight out of college. Beyond her beautiful vocals and captivating performances, her professional and polished demeanor gives us a glimpse of why she has become so successful. With roots from the state of Washington, she has a Pittsburgh connection as she is a proud graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama. Although she earned every bit of success she has and what is yet to come, she remains absolutely grateful and joyous about all of her experiences. Hilty generously gave MANIAC some of her time before heading off to another day of production on SMASH. She talked about everything from Broadway to her own personal style… and she was incredibly real and down-to-earth throughout the interview.

MM: You’re such a talented performer and you’ve had so much success in your career. How did it all start and how did you get there at such a young age? MH: Oh that could be a long story! Ok, let me try the short version. As far as how my interest in singing and performing began, it’s always been there. I used to want to be Whitney Houston, and in realizing that could never happen, went for a career in classical voice. I was trained in Opera and then went more towards musical theater. So I’ve always known that I wanted that. And CMU really launched my career. They opened the door to Wicked for me after graduation. MM: Yes CMU, we love that Pittsburgh connection! So how did you like your time in Pittsburgh and at CMU? MH: I love Pittsburgh! Especially once I got my beat up old car, I was able to experience the different neighborhoods and great places to eat. Pittsburgh is so beautiful, especially when the leaves are changing colors. I got to really appreciate the city once I was able to travel outside of campus more. MM: Do you have any plans to come back and visit? MH: No definite plans, but I would love to come back to talk at CMU. I remember being there as a student listening to past CMU graduates with careers in the industry. I would love to tell students to stick with it. It would be fun to hang out too – I’m still friends with some of my professors. MM: I’m sure Pittsburgh and CMU would love it! Now you have an extensive background on Broadway. You starred as the epic role Glinda in Wicked. What was that experience like, getting your 1st big break? MH: It was literally a dream come true, it was what I always wanted and dreamed of. It was also terrifying at the same time. I didn’t expect any of it. I knew this would be my career, but this was something else. I got the role of Glinda’s standby – this was 9 months after Wicked opened and it was taking the world by storm. And this was a big part – Kristin Chenoweth and Jennifer Thompson were powerhouses. The bar was set high with expectations. I learned so much about myself and valuable lessons, that I needed to be ok with myself. I couldn’t try to copy what others did or compare myself. You can’t please everyone. MM: You also starred as Doralee Rhodes in the Broadway show 9 to 5. How was Dolly Parton? MH: She was the most incredible person

I’ve ever met or worked with! It was quite an experience to step into her shoes in a role that she made iconic. And she was so supportive and great throughout all of it. MM: So now, what is it like to be the star of a new NBC hit series? And what do you like about the groundbreaking show SMASH? MH: I count my lucky stars every day – it’s everything I ever wanted in a job. The music, singing, the elaborate costumes, and a beautifully flawed character. The cast is spectacular. It is so great performing together and we have so much fun. It is a joy to work every day. MM: Tell us about your character Ivy Lynn. Can we expect any surprises as competition heats up for her? MH: She is unpredictable which makes such an interesting storyline. She makes her share of bad decisions, but that’s why you want to watch her! To a degree, she’s relatable. She was always perfect and did things the right way. But that’s not real, people make mistakes and bad decisions. I appreciate how her character is written. She’s not evil, she has remorse. And I think it’s better explained once her mom appears in the season too. MM: Are you like Ivy Lynn at all? MH: For the most part, we have a lot in

I used to want to be Whitney Houston, and in realizing that could never happen, went for a career in classical voice.

common. That’s the job of an actor, to find similarities between yourself and your character. We both eat, breath, sleep Broadway and love theater; we’re in that world. I know people like her, and I can base her off of at least 3 people I know – fantastic people, I mean that with no judgment. I can relate to her struggle. She’s stuck in a job and wants to reach her full potential. She would do anything to reach her goal and get to the next step. MM: Is SMASH a true depiction of what Broadway is really like? MH: There are so many people that come from Broadway involved in this show that you can’t help but make it authentic. It’s not a reality show though, so it’s heightened for dramatic purposes. But it shows everything from the heartache and triumphs to everything in between. The idea of the show is great. There are so many spectacular 59

working with real professionals and was a highlight for me. MM: We’ve heard rumor of a recording contract. Can you tell us anything about that? MH: Oh yes! I signed a deal with SONY. I am beginning to develop my own personal album. We are actually meeting this week to discuss what it will say and sound like. It’s exciting and something I’ve always wanted. It’s all thanks to SMASH for opening the door. And I hope it can be another great part of my career. MM: OK, choosing quick favorites now… Would you say acting, singing or dancing is your favorite? MH: Singing. Because you act with singing. MM: Television or Broadway? MH: Um… SMASH! Because I can do both! MM: Since MANIAC is all about fashion How would you describe your personal style? MH: Well my mom has always told me since I was very young that how you dress yourself is a primary way to express yourself. So my style changes like my mood! But I generally like a classic lady fit, haha! MM: Smart lady! Are you close to your family? MH: I’m really close with my whole family. They’ve been so supportive of me in this wacky profession. They never batted an eye. They just said go, do what you need to and we’ll be here for you if you need us. MM: Do you have any advice for aspiring young actresses? MH: As for acting, I always caution people. You think this profession is glamorous or easy and it’s not. It’s hard to do. You’re dealing with rejection on a daily basis. Your job is to be judged daily. Really examine why you want to do this. It can’t be to become a star or famous. There’s so much more to it and it’s a tough business. Your heart needs to be in the right place or it will swallow you whole. This is advice worth taking from someone who has clearly made it with all the right intentions. It is evident that Hilty shines as much in reality as she does on screen and on stage. It’s great to see the worlds of Broadway and Television colliding with SMASH and we’re thrilled to see the lovely Megan Hilty is one of the stars. With such a promising future, we can’t wait to see what follows this season’s curtain call.

personalities in Broadway. A beautiful breed is in this business. And SMASH celebrates that community and family. And I’m proud to be a part of that. Not only do hose relationships develop when you see and relate to people every day while working on a show, but there is a special bond created when you are vulnerable and perform in front of thousands of people with your co-stars. A trust is developed. MM: How was the transition from live Broadway to TV Broadway? MH: There’s a huge misconception that Broadway actors can’t do TV, everything is too big. At the end of the day, they’re actors. And part of an actor’s job is to gauge their audience. So I had to adjust from performing for an audience of 2,000 to an audience in my lap (where the camera sometimes practically is). It’s a great challenge and I learn something new every day. MM: What’s it like working with Katharine McPhee, Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and the rest of the cast? MH: It is so much fun! I’m actually really sad because we wrap shooting season one next week. I’m slowly starting the mourning process (as I always do). We’re like a family; we are taking risks every day and starting something new together. I genuinely love the cast and crew and will miss them. MM: Can we expect to see Marilyn the Musical on Broadway anytime soon? MH: Not to my knowledge. I would love it and love to audition for it, but it takes years to develop a Broadway show. But I think the desire for it has been created. MM: You’ve had other television roles and have even done animated voices. You’re very versatile! Tell us about some of your favorite roles elsewhere. MH: Well something I’ve always been proud of was actually at Pittsburgh’s City Theater in Café Puttanesca. It was my senior year at CMU and it was a brand new musical. It was exciting

The bloggers got a sneak peek into the magazine and then had the opportunity to save some of the magazine images to blog about in real time. Talk about bringing the breaking news to your readers! The magazine had set up a bank of computers so that we were able to log on and post right from the party. The bloggers were also encouraged to tweet about the event and take photos to give our followers an inside look into the party and to “check in” on FourSquare.

In addition to getting to blog about the issue, there was also music, drinks, food, hand scrub, massages, haircuts and makeup lessons! Pretty much a girls’ dream, right? The gifts and services were provided by Pittsburgh Brewing Company, LaVida Massage, Katherine Reel Makeup, Harmony Salon, Tamari, White Diamond Vodka, Stella & Dot, ModCloth, Esspa Kozmetica, SouthSide Works and MINI of Pittsburgh. The people at Maniac certainly know how to throw a party! The bloggers were also provided with a great goodie bag to take home. The ModCloth provided tote was filled with gifts including hair shampoos and products, hand scrub, hand lotion, gift cards for salons and spas, and a copy of the Maniac Magazine December/January issue. The best part of the event, for me, was getting to mingle with some of Pittsburgh’s greatest, including Maniac’s Editor-in-Chief, April Hubal. Being new to the area, the thought of going alone to the event was a bit intimidating. But as has been proved time and time again, the people of Pittsburgh welcomed me with open arms. Meeting bloggers from all areas surrounding the city, brought together for the purpose of celebrating the release of the Love Issue was an incredible experience. One that this newbie blogger, newbie Pittsburgher won’t soon forget. 63

Fashion is fearless. Fashion is fabulous. Fashion is forward. More often we find that fashion is friendly to people in need. Fashion fixes. Fashion fundraises. One such organization, the FEED Projects, produces garments that give much needed assistance to children in the community. The project’s mission is to stand behind its brand and the organizations and humanitarian programs each FEED product supports. Ultimately, the FEED Project believes that everyone has the right to basic human necessities, such as healthy and nutritious food. FEED is proud to help feed the world, one bag at a time. The FEED Project began in 2006 when model Lauren Bush designed a bag to benefit the United Nations’ World Food Programme’s (WFP) School Feeding program. As the organization’s honorary spokesperson, Bush visited countries like Asia, Latin America and Africa and was inspired by the plight of the people she met on her travels, taking a special interest in WFP’s School Feeding program benefitting hungry children. In 2007, FEED Projects LLC was founded by Bush and Ellen Gustafson to produce and sell these bags. The mission of the FEED Project is to create good products that help feed the world. Funds are raised through the sale of FEED bags, bears, T-shirts and other accessories by building a set donation into the cost of each product. Thus the impact of each product, signified by a stenciled number, is understandable, tangible and meaningful. FEED gifts range in price from five dollars to $200 dollars. The products can be ordered online at www.feedprojects.com or purchased from various retail partners such as GAP, American Eagle Outfitters, Whole Foods, Amazon.com and Nordstrom. The project’s website explains, “Every FEED product has a specific and individual donation attached to the sale of the item. Rather than donating a “percentage of the profits or proceeds” like other 64

organizations, an actual amount of money from each product sold funds the mission. The donation is built into the cost of the product, so it is an exact and tangible amount of money for each product. For example, for every purchase of the FEED 1 bag, one child is fed in school for one year. The UNWFP estimates that in many countries, it costs $20 to feed one child in school for one school year. So the FEED 1 bag has a donation of $20 (1/3 of the retail

cost) included in every bag purchase, which FEED donates to WFP.” The donations are then made by FEED to the UNWFP based on the number of bags sold to date at that time. In addition to generating funds for a worthy cause, the organization takes great care to be conscious of the environment. The FEED Project takes pride in using

environmentally-friendly and artisan-made materials, along with fair-labor production, in the creation of all FEED products. Bush first created the FEED 1 bag, a reversible burlap and organic cotton bag reminiscent of the bags of food distributed by WFP, to help raise funds and awareness around these school feeding operations. The bag’s graphic consisted of printed text “FEED the children of the world” and the number “1” to signify that each bag feeds one child in school for one year. The original FEED 1 bag was designed by Bush to help cut down on the use of plastic bags. Products are made from organic cotton, natural burlap or recycled plastic-based nylon, and sustainable and eco-friendly materials are used whenever possible. Additionally, the hangtags on each bag are made from post-consumer recycled paper. In 2008, FEED started a nonprofit organization called the FEED Foundation, dedicated to supporting programs and organizations that are effectively working to fight hunger and eliminate malnutrition throughout the world. In a few short years, the FEED Foundation has already provided over 68 million meals to hungry families throughout the world through community donations and the sales of FEED apparel. The next time you are looking to truly demonstrate altruism, look no further than the FEED Project to nourish your style and your soul.

Nassau

The ocean front bar, known as The Alcove Bar and Lounge, sits right on the water and serves traditional Bahamian cuisine from sunrise to sunset. Be sure to stop in and indulge in some of the best food served on the island. The resort has a rich history, highlighting its unique character. Chris Blackwell, owner of Island Records, set out to build a resort and recording studio that would set it apart from most commercial hotels. He wanted to build an establishment to make musicians feel at home, where they could create music in an atmosphere where relaxation and production took precedence. The resort coupled with the studio was genius. The musicians could work and play, conveniently staying there for weeks, and sometimes months, on end. Blackwell founded Compass Point Studios in 1977. Throughout the late ‘70s and ‘80s, Compass Point Studios had reached major milestones in music history, with famous bands and artists recording chart-topping albums. The infamous Bob Marley was the first to be signed by Blackwell’s label Island Records. Blackwell’s ambitious attitude led to sculpting a resort to encompass the cool island vibe. Little rainbow colored bungalows stretch across what is known as Love Beach. Some say Love Beach is one of the best beaches in the world, so it comes as no surprise that Blackwell would hand pick one of the most prominent beaches in real estate to arrange his distinctive vision. Sadly, the studio suffered a major loss that forever changed Compass Point Studios and the island itself. The death of Studio Manager Alex Sadkin caused a heartbreaking decline to the exterior and to studio management. With the loss of direction, Compass Point began to suffer with the decrease of international recording artists as well as the upkeep of equipment. After the down-turn was experienced, Blackwell still had hopes of revamping and reopening the resort and studios somehow, someway. Terry and Sherry Manning, established owners of a recording house in the U.S., were brought in to completely renovate and re-landscape the resort and studio. The celebratory reopening of Compass Point Studios in 1995 was a star-studded event, packed with celebrities and some of the biggest names in reggae music. The studio started right back where it left off, booking and recording major artists like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Shakira, Puff Daddy, Backstreet Boys, Diana Ross, Crash Test Dummies, David Bowie, Jimmy Buffet, Missy Elliot and Bon Jovi. When MANIAC chose Nassau, we had no idea the extensive musical history we were about to embark upon. The resort plays homage to some of the biggest names in musical history, including The Rolling Stones, U2, Eric Clapton and AC/ DC, who recorded Back in Black at Compass Point. After more than a decade of success, Compass Point Studios were shut down and put to rest in September 2010. With its beautiful and historical memories, accomplishments and musical

hen choosing the Compass Point Hotel in Nassau as our next resort, we weren’t expecting to find this fabulous, lush hidden gem. Referring to it as a jet set destination is an understatement. I have travelled all over the world and have yet to stumble upon something quite like this resort. Set on the northern most part of Nassau, it’s the perfect getaway to truly relax and enjoy yourself. Compass Point is one of the islands hot spots, as most people will travel to the resort just to check out the bar and restaurant, making it an ultra hip attraction. The amenities are great too, with an iPod dock, Wi-Fi, and television. There is also a barefoot retreat spa located on the property where you can book treatments such as body scrubs, hot stone massages and reflexology.

establishments that touched ground here, the resort will forever be cherished and remembered by all it touched the lives of. MANIAC had the pleasure of experiencing the welcoming atmosphere of Nassau first hand. The second you walk into the resort, you are greeted by the friendly staff in the lobby. The huge mosaic chairs are bright and breathtaking, giving the jet setter a preview of the beauty to come. There is a tiny stoned handmade path leading the guests from the entry concierge to one of the 16 individual bungalows. MANIAC stayed in bungalow 111, our own little piece of heaven. Each room pays it respects to musicians, displaying numerous framed records, autographed by world-renowned artists. Our room housed Celine Dion’s signed album. The cottages themselves will make your heart sing. Each outside elevated platform is made of wood, splashed with multiple shades and hues of color. in matching tones are strewn throughout. Underneath each hut is a huge stove for barbecues and grilling out. Around the stove is a circular picnic table that seats about 10 people, so be sure to invite the neighbors over for dinner! When you’re ready to explore the underbelly of Nassau, take a trip to Arawalk, known by the locals as the “fish fry.” The street has a dozen restaurants scattered on each side, revealing a neighborhood-esque approach in style and taste. Symbolic of how the Bohemians live life, you may find an entire family cooking in the back or a live reggae band in the front of each restaurant. To be blunt, the food is amazing. A Bohemian meal includes the well-known conch salad, ribs with homemade bohemian macaroni salad and a signature banana daiquiri. After eating, there are a few options for nighttime entertainment. One low key option is the “rake and scrape,” eponymously named

after the genre of dance and music. Here you will find the locals partying to which is best described as hillbilly reggae, kind of like Blake Shelton mixed with Bob Marley. The rake and scrape was very cool, and we had a blast getting down with the locals. A great day trip is Atlantis, where you will check into paradise the moment you cross the bridge. Atlantis is definitely a place to see and be seen, it’s like the Las Vegas of the Bahamas. As you walk up to the mass proportions, you wonder if you’re in Dubai. It took two billion dollars to build these massive pillars that greet you, while huge fountains on the right side take your breath away. When you enter the columns heading into the massive maze of a resort, a huge Chihuly glass sculpture awaits. One of the greatest elements of the resort is the art and sculptures that encapsulate most of the property. The resort also features one-of-a-kind marine exhibits. There’s only one place in the world where you can embark on a journey through the streets and tunnels of the fabulous lost city of Atlantis. Reflecting the tunnels and thoroughfares of the lost continent, Paradise Island’s The Dig features habitats for 100 venomous IndoPacific Ocean Lionfish, 500 piranhas,

iridescent jellyfish and six-foot Moray Eels. There are special environments that are home to nine species of enormous groupers. And in separate smaller “Jewel Habitats,” multitudes of brilliantly colored tropical fish dwell. Entertainment includes casino nightlife, wonderful restaurants like Nobu and the Bay Street shops. Nassau was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for MANIAC.

With a background in both fashion and contemporary art, Lemetais had the passion and drive to take a curatorial approach to retail by showcasing her designer roster in a gallery-like setting. “I love discovering new talents in both fashion and contemporary art, so I thought I could combine my art curator expertise and retail background to put together a strong and well edited group of emerging designers, while displaying their collections in a minimalist and refreshing setting,” she explained. The great niche location adds to Lemetais’ enthusiastic take as women’s boutique newcomer. “The Bowery is one of the few Manhattan neighborhoods that is still evolving so it’s exciting to take part of this burgeoning scene by having a boutique amid art galleries and hip restaurants,” Lemetais said. “We see long time residents, as well as new comers, showing great excitement in welcoming a boutique that features their favorite designers.” The boutique gives off a Parisian chic vibe, where Lemetais’ French roots are apparent, adding to the store’s aesthetic. It feels feminine, yet sleek and edgy. The layout of the store is open, welcoming to those passing by on the street. “It was very important to me to have a very clean and minimalist environment which allows the clothes to remain the main focus,” Lemetais said. “However, while designing the store interiors, we incorporated design ideas that were inspired by artists we admire, which gives the space a very distinguished aesthetic.” For example, the store’s unique rammed earth counter was designed and created by artist Brian O’Connel and the light fixture is inspired by an art piece by Martin Boyce and Ugo Rondinone. Lemetais decided to name the store after Richard Prince’s 1983 Spiritual America exhibition (showcased in the same storefront) where he famously showed a photograph of an 11-year-old Brooke Shields standing nude in a bathtub. “We thought this would be a great name for the boutique as it relates to the space’s history but also links our art background with the shop,” Lemetais explained. “We display

pulp romance nurse novels throughout the store as a reference to Prince’s work, as they are the same books he used for his Nurses painting series.” In a city full of high-end fashion, Lemetais knew she had to take an innovative and creative approach to choosing designer collections to feature in her store. “I work on mixing emerging local New York designers,

undiscovered at times, with major European lines as well,” she told MANIAC. Spiritual America’s strong roster of well edited designers includes American new talents Dusen Dusen, Morgan Carper and Clare Vivier as well as European designers Vanessa Bruno, Hussein Chalayan and Malene Birger. The store’s American favorites include Loeffler Randall, United Bamboo, Wendy Nichol, and Giles and Brother.

The store also carries lines that are not overly distributed in New York, like Marie Turnor, a Los Angeles designer who designed a fashionable lunch bag purse called the picnic clutch, and Mischa Lampert, who makes fabulous hand-knit hats. Customer favorites include Clare Vivier’s messenger bag (in high demand due to its perfect size, shape and price), Giles and Brother’s spike cuffs and Swedish Hasbeens clogs. The Seattle-based Iacoli and McAllister jewelry line is also very popular. “We are one of the few boutiques carrying it in New York, and our customers find it quite special.” Lemetais said. Of course, as the owner, Lemetais has her favorites too. “I appreciate Chalayan’s refreshing shapes for their uniqueness and of course you can’t go wrong with a flawless Vanessa Bruno handbag,” she gushed. “I absolutely love Kim Gordon’s collaboration with Surface to Air, specially the Kim boot— it’s just the perfect downtown girl staple.” Spiritual America is quickly gaining the attention of New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike. Customers are art and fashion enthusiasts, who cultivate trend awareness but appreciate exclusive finds as well. Their loyalty has the press taking notice too. New York Magazine recently named the boutique the Best Women’s Boutique in its 2012 Best of New York issue. Although mixing bright colors are in this spring, Lemetais said to expect to see a more tailored and structured silhouette for fall. Reds and oranges will still be very present in most collections, as will purples. She said the fashion world will see glimpses of the western Native American style incorporated in new silhouettes, but in a more modern and subtle way. “I think it’s so interesting, especially in amazing inventive sprints,” she said. Whether it’s clothing, jewelry, accessories or art, Spiritual America provides unique and chic lines to suit all style your needs. And with Lemetais’ fresh take and zealous approach, the store will continue to be a fashion force taking New York by storm. 73

What is American beauty? Like us, it’s constantly evolving with modern trends and styles. Yet, it is unique and creative, allowing women (and men) the freedom to take risks in order to discover their individual beauty. Feathers, extensions and ombre highlights are the perfect accent for hair, while facials, massages and chemical peels help skin to look its best. But true American beauty is actually quite simple. It’s natural, it’s wholesome, it’s happiness, and it’s not only in our appearance but also within us. Of course with the hectic schedules and everyday stresses Maniacs endure, we all need to take time out of our day to pamper ourselves. Go for the works – a new hair cut, manicure, pedicure, massage and more! Whether you’re going for a less is more, chic or totally glamorous look, the following salons and spas can provide you with all the services to make you look and feel absolutely beautiful.

Located in the heart of Southside Works, deStefino Southside is an upscale full service salon and spa, offering the best in hair, nails, skin and lashes. It exclusively offers LAshX Mink Lash Extensions, created by celebrity makeup artist Makeup Mandy. She started working in her grandfather’s Shadyside salon when she was 13. The Southside location is a smaller salon, which customers love due to its intimate setting and central location. This spring and summer, deStefino Southside is offering their Morning Hair Dash Deal. The salon will open its doors at 6 a.m. to offer their services to customers before they start their day. And every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month the salon offers $20 blow-drys from 6 to 9 a.m. Be sure to check out their website for upcoming summer events!

One visit to the day spa and you will see for yourself the difference. “I love the definition for the word destination- a place set aside for a particular reason,” explained owner Angela Shimkus. “When you’re here, relaxation is your main focus and my staff and I will do everything in our power to accomplish that mission.” Looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift? Buy Mom a package of rejuvenation to show her some love and she’ll appreciate all the spa has to offer.

Dolce Vita opened in June of 2007. Owner Kelly Hartman used to work for a bigger salon that wasn’t very personable, and she wanted to create a better atmosphere for herself and her clients. The salon means “Sweet Life” in Italian, and that’s exactly what the salon offers. With its close niche group of stylists, the salon feels like a home away from home. With new technology like hair extensions and Keratin treatments, the salon offers more than just a hair cut. Airbrush tanning, massages, facials, waxing, make-up and manicures are also offered. The salon only carries professional products that cannot be found in drug or grocery stores. Brands include Aquage, Soma, Holistics and Salon Tech (used for hair care) and Skyn Iceland (used for skin care). If you have hair that doesn’t exactly behave in the warmer weather, take advantage of Dolce Vita’s Keratin treatment promotion this season. The salon also offers a deal on shampoo blow-drys to help eliminate frizz for days. With its laid-back, friendly feel, Dolce Vita is the perfect place to spoil oneself. “American Beauty is on the inside, however, if you look good on the outside it shines through a personality within,” Hartman said. “We believe in helping our clients feel good about themselves and who they really are. Sometimes that takes a little pampering and good friendship. Our clients are more than clients, they are our friends and family.”

Harmony Salon offers clients a full-range of color and styling services, specializing in all color-related services such as highlights and corrective color. Styling services include dry cutting applications, multiple blow-dry services and formal services. The salon also offers nail and pedicure services and makeup applications for any occasion. Depending on the application, color services range from $45-$120 and haircuts range from $35-$55. Several types of exclusive services are offered to meet the needs of clients and include Cinderella hair extensions, Redken Chemistry conditioning treatments and BKT color seal. Harmony’s exclusive products include Sexy Hair Concepts, Redken, Mothers Milc and Pureology. The salon’s atmosphere and friendly stylists make customers feel at home, where they can be themselves and have engaging conversations. On June 11, Harmony Salon will celebrate its 9th anniversary. “It has been such a great time and I can’t believe it’s been that long already,” owner Harmony Kaiser said. “Ever since I cut the hair on my Barbie Doll, I wanted to own my own salon. At the age of 22, I was able to realize that dream and have not looked back.” The salon is offering a couple of deals this season, including Redken Chemistry deep conditioning treatments for $15 with any service, which will repair and protect your hair in preparation for fun-in-the sun activities. Product specials include Mothers Milc shampoo and conditioner for $15 and 10% off all Pureology products during the month of May.

Jeffrey Smith Studio is a full service hair salon with exceptional service and extraordinary products. Located in the trendy and up-andcoming Lawrenceville, the salon just celebrated its 10 year anniversary in April. Jeffrey himself has over 30 years of experience as a talented hair stylist and salon owner, with training from some of the most prestigious academies in France, Italy, Japan, Switzerland and the United States. His artistic talent and unparalleled eye for design, along with his genuinely kind and compassionate nature, has made him one of the most well-known and adored stylists in the Pittsburgh area. Stylists at the salon provide fabulous cuts to compliment each client’s own personal style, with women’s ($55-$75) and men’s ($45-$55) haircuts ranging in price depending on the stylist. The salon carries Kerastase Paris and L’Oreal INOA hair color exclusively. Jeffery Smith is unique because of its size and intimate setting. Unlike factory salons, Jeffery Smith has only a few stylists, making it more of a boutique salon. With summer just around the corner, it’s time for a Brazilian blowout. And with long locks back in style, the salon is offering Great Lengths hair extensions to customers. Stylists, although up-to-date with pop culture’s hottest looks, understand that style is about the texture of the hair, not so much the trend. The staff promotes beautiful, healthy and individualized hair. If you’re looking for a new do, trust the professionals at Jeffery Smith to have you looking, and feeling, your best.

Lunasea Hair offers men and women cuts, color, up-dos and deep conditioners. Men’s cuts start at $28, women’s at $38 and color is $45 and up. The salon also has a spa, which offers manicures, pedicures and facials in the mid-range of pricing. Lunasea carries more natural lines like Bamboo and Life by Alterna as well as the Bioelements line in the spa and TIGI cosmetics. Lunasea is unique because of its natural, homemade products. Owner Marla Degenhardt makes all the bath and body care herself. “I am a certified herbalist, I use only organic herbs and natural ingredients,” she explained. “No SLS, dyes, fragrances or petroleums are in my products. Every color or scent comes from clays, teas, herbs, spices and essential oils only.” If you’re looking to plan a bachelorette party, bridal shower or even just a girls day out, Lunasea’s upstairs lounge is a cozy place to have a spa party, stocked with dishes, utensils, wine glasses and champagne flutes. For a small fee, snacks can be provided or guests can bring whatever they like. “Toes for Two” happy hour is offered every Wednesday and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., where there is a five dollar discount on each pedicure and classic manicure with a complimentary glass of wine for those 21 and over. For Mother’s Day, Lunasea is offering a custom blend facial, spa pedicure and classic manicure all for $95. What a deal!

Sergio’s has been in Pittsburgh for over 40 years, with current owner Sergio taking over from his father five years ago, ultimately turning the business into a more modern salon focusing on the guest’s experience. The salon offers both men and women’s haircuts, hair coloring, airbrush make-up and waxing (body and facial). Haircuts start at $25 for men and $30 for women, hair coloring services start at $60 and highlights start at $75. The salon also offers Lavish Lashes Eyelash Extensions, which are applied to each individual eyelash. As a Paul Mitchell Focus Salon, Sergio’s exclusively carries Paul Mitchell products, including hair care, hair color and various chemical services. Focus salons embrace the Paul Mitchell culture and brand, and Sergio’s employs stylists that are National Educators for Paul Mitchell. These stylists travel regionally and internationally educating other stylists. Because every client is uniquely different, the salon treats their hair as such. Hairstyles are not one size fits all, so the stylists create styles that fit each guest and their needs. “We pride ourselves in taking an average haircut and turning it into an experience,” owner Sergio Pampena said. “With our state of the art ‘The Wash House’ we create an oasis from the outside world. We’ve turned our sinks into a spa where every guest gets a relaxing head and neck massage. It’s all about celebrating our guest and giving them an experience they’ll never forget.” The stylists genuinely care about clients’ hair, and to show their appreciation if you spread the word and refer a new client, you get 20 percent off your next service.

Established in 1997, Sewickley Spa has been offering its customers an escape from reality for over a decade. Owner Dorothy Andreas forged the market for day spas in the region. When she first opened, a lot of people told her there was no market for such a business. “I wanted a place where (primarily) women could come in, have a robe and slippers on and be made to feel fabulous,” she said. And here is Sewickley Spa today, consistent in the quality of services, ambiance and reputation. It is designed for guests to spend a day in a totally relaxed state, embracing the beautiful surroundings, original artwork and world-class services. The spa offers several types of facials, massages, nail services, hair removal, self-tanning and salon services. Nail services start at $30 and facials and massages start at $50. Sewickley Spa is one of the few spas in the country to carry the Comfort Zone skin care line. It’s imported from Italy and has amazing ingredients that yield fabulous results. The spa also offers two exclusive treatments, the Lipallure and Puffy Eye Reduction Treatment. Just in time sun your buns, Sewickley Spa is offering a “Get Your Tan On” special, which includes a sea salt scrub, spray on tanning application and take home tanner for just $95 (a $200 value). Take advantage of this deal to have your skin glowing by the first day of summer.

Nestled amongst downtown skyscrapers, Spa Jema offers a unique, serene setting where guests can escape the stress of modern life. Since its grand opening on Light Up Night in November 2009, Spa Jema has brought leisure to Pittsburghers. An organic day spa, Spa Jema offers a full range of spa services without the bustling energy of a salon. It offers an extensive menu of massage therapies, including deep tissue, hot stones, maternity and couples. The spa also provides exfoliating sugar and salt scrubs that replenish the skin, and mud and seaweed body wraps for detoxifying, firming and toning. In addition, the spa offers a wide range of organic facials personally customized for all skin types and conditions, waxing/hair removal for the face and body, brow and lash tinting, manicures (natural and gel polish) and spa pedicures. Spa Jema uses Eminence, an exclusive organic product, handmade in Hungary with over 50 years expertise for facials and body therapies, and Zoya polishes, which are free of formaldehyde and toluene, and Qtica for nail services. The spa setting is relaxed, allowing guests to renew themselves mentally, physically and emotionally while receiving the ultimate in pampering. It can accommodate spa parties of up to 15 guests, where they can socialize in the lounge and private outdoor courtyard and enjoy complimentary tea, water, snacks and adult beverages. Owner Jennifer Blodgett has spent over 15 years in the industry as a massage therapist and was thrilled to bring her dream to life in her hometown.

STUDIO BOOTH

WHITEHOUSE SALON

6343 Penn Avenue Pittsburgh PA 15206 412.362.6684 www.studio-booth.com

731 Filbert Street Pittsburgh PA 15232 412.681.8111 www.whitehousesalon.com

In July 2010 Studio Booth opened its doors to Pittsburghers, providing a one-of-a-kind full service salon and spa. It offers hairstyling, special occasion styling, cuts, colors, corrective colors, relaxers, perms and keratin smooth treatments. Studio Booth even has a stylist who can do dreadlocks. The salon also offers pedicure and manicure services, including acrylics, gels, fiberglass wraps and OPI gellish, as well as facial and body waxing, facials and massage services, including Swedish, deep tissue, pregnancy and head/hand/foot. And if you’re looking to get some work done on your skin without surgery or needles, Studio Booth offers several advanced skin care treatments including an alternative to Botox (Bio Choice), an alternative to Restylane (Bio Matrix) and a skin lightening treatment. Studio Booth carries a variety of product lines including Moroccan Oil, Kevin Murphy, Phyto, Subtil, Minardi, Alfaparf, Babor, Danne, J. Beverly for Men, Sebastian and Zoya. The salon and spa puts a strong emphasis on customer service, with its relaxing and welcoming environment, granting an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In the winter months, the salon has a fireplace for guests to cozy up next to. The salon also has a unique ventilation system that eliminates beauty treatment odors, spider machines that process hair color or treatments in almost half the time they would otherwise take and flat screen televisions that display the newest trends and clothing lines for fashionistas. Studio Booth even has an exclusive boutique that features distinctive collections of scarves, hats, bags and jewelry. Studio Booth offers everything for everyone, providing guests with a unique and unforgettable experience.

A wonderful new addition to Shadyside, Whitehouse Salon (in business for a year) specializes in hair. The third floor salon overlooks the rooftops, cafes and boutiques of the neighborhood. Even though the salon is named Whitehouse, it is actually a green salon when it comes to practices and treatments. Prices for haircuts are based on stylist. “New talent” stylists charge $35 for women and $25 for men, while “master” stylists charge $55 to $60 for women and $35 to $45 for men. Owner Tanya Brooks explained that the new talent in her salon has four years of experience, while the masters boost 18 to 30 years experience. The salon carries Unite, one of healthiest products on the market. The salon strives to be green and that is why it’s exclusive to Unite, which provides sulfate free products and ammonia free color. Brooks, hailing from Toronto, owned a salon in Canada for 15 years. Upon moving to Pittsburgh, she visited quite a few salons and realized none of them had what she was looking for and it motivated her to start her own business. “My training comes from around the world. Whitehouse is more high-fashioned and modern compared to the rest of Pittsburgh,” she said. “We are a more metropolitan, New York style salon.” Complete with a wine bar, Whitehouse offers a chic take on hair style. The “in” looks the salon is seeing include bangs, layers and blended colors. If you’re looking for a new look, ask for Jason. He’ll discover a new you you didn’t even know existed!

All Access WITH AMY

All Access with Amy is your all access pass to the social scene, events and happenings in and around Pittsburgh, as well as other major metropolitan cities. You can find me online or read my article in MANIAC Magazine. Also make sure to tune in to 96.1 KISS F.M. to hear about all the latest happenings! It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the year! It’s been said that time flies when you are having fun… and that is exactly what I’ve been doing! I caught a peek of MANIAC’s upcoming issue at the “Bloggers Event,” and the “50’s Style” lunch party for the “Love Issue” was an absolute blast! I met and hung out with the crew from BurghLife, and rocked out with The Long Time Darlings. Our Pens scored big, we “marched” through the final four, and hit a home run on Pirates’ opening day. Angie Fec hosted Sew Addicted’s “Sew Seductive Soirée & Couture Lingerie Show,” and the “Angels Couture” fashion show put together by Jennifer Lynn Noah, local designer MJ Whalen and photographer Jordan Beckham was a big hit. Cirque Du Soleil’s Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL was nothing less than amazing. I walked the red carpet at the Pittsburgh Film Office’s “Lights! Glamour! Action!,” danced the night away during the Heart Association’s “Fire & Ice Ball,” and participated in the downtown green invasion shenanigans on St. Patty’s Day!

Am I t i re d ? . . . H A R D LY ! Now that summer is just around the corner, I’m ready for some fun in the sun! Kennywood is open, and there are concerts and events galore! What’s to come? Girl Talk, Drake, Jimmy Buffet, Avicci and LE7ELS, Gavin DeGraw and Colbie Caillat, Lady Antebellum, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kenny Chesney just to name a few. Also, don’t forget to check out the Pittsburgh Marathon, the Race for the Cure, the Three Rivers Arts Festival and MANIAC’s annual “White Party”!
