Greetings, Maniac readers!

I’d like to revise an often misquoted statement to describe the beautiful relationship between humans and dogs.

Isn’t that exactly what makes our canine companions so special? No matter what anyone else thinks, to them, you are the center of their universe, the reason why their tails wag at the door.

This month’s dog issue covers a variety of topics related to our four-legged friends, from how one man survived a breakup by creating vibrant wall artwork of his dog Jimmy Choo to a Las Vegas dog that actually produces artwork himself (brush in mouth!). We also take a look at apps that help to romantically connect dog lovers to other dog lovers (the You Must Love Dogs dating app) or dog owners to people who simply love dogs (Borrow My Doggy).

ACTRESS AND PETA MODEL

Torrey DeVitto FAUX FUR, REAL LOVE BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY TJ MANOU STYLIST FRANZY STAEDTER

She may be helping bury secrets as Melissa on Pretty Little Liars, but actress Torrey DeVitto was excluded from one big revelation: her PETA campaign being a top news story on Facebook this past March. “I couldn’t find it,” said DeVitto with a laugh. “I was told it was trending.” For the “Whose Skin Are You In?” photoshoot, DeVitto stripped down and posed like a crocodile, adorning scales on her body to raise awareness of reptilian skin being used as fake leather. It takes One-piece: Gregorio Sanchez 12 Ring: Jessica Elliot

up to three alligators and crocodiles to create just one bag, and often they’re still living and breathing when their skin is taken from them. The commitment to buying animal-friendly clothing can seem daunting, but DeVitto cites shops like Lulu’s, Beyond Skin, and Nasty Gal as helpful in meeting vegan needs. “It’s really hard to justify wearing an animal for vanity.” She playfully admits to being bashful when it comes to the scantilyclad images from the PETA photoshoot. “But because I was covered in the water, I didn’t feel any pressure to work out that day!” While she’s got the backs of cold-blooded creatures (not literally), it’s not just reptiles that DeVitto thinks are in need of being saved. She’s the 13

forced to remain tight-lipped about some things. When pressed about what PLL fans can expect from season 7 of Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, she plays mum. “They don’t want anything to get out. I usually only know what’s going on when I read the script.”

The other “rescue” dog, Homie, 4, was literally saved from a traffic accident. “She’d been hit by a car. We call her our little miracle pup.” DeVitto was bringing in Beau to the vet for a checkup when she spotted Homie, who was so impaired from the collision that doctors said they couldn’t even tell what sex she was. DeVitto knew she just had to adopt her. “Homie is so appropriately named. She’s

Whatever she’s working on, whoever she’s helping, she always can rely on two friends waiting for her at home at the end of the day. And the only thing these pretty little things lie about is the bed. Follow Torrey DeVitto (and of course Beau and Homie) on Instagram and Twitter at @torreydevitto.

literally my home girl. She’ll hop up on my lap, and I feel like she could start talking.” As much as DeVitto is an animal lover, she’s also committed to her human companions, especially with her work as a Hospice Ambassador, helping patients who have a limited time to live. “I was 24 and started feeling unfulfilled and wanted to volunteer. I did a bit of Googling and hospice popped up. Volunteering with hospice depends on what you feel comfortable with. I personally prefer in-patient care. You set up a schedule, one or two times a week, and stay an hour or more with patients.” Many people, like her mother, questioned getting involved with such a morbid activity, but DeVitto doesn’t see it that way. “I feel like, what’s the difference between this and childbirth? They’re both the circle of life. No one should die alone.” DeVitto’s reasoning eventually swayed Mama DeVitto to become a volunteer herself. But while she’s a medical volunteer in real life, DeVitto plays a fullfledged doctor on NBC’s Chicago Med, which will be moving to Thursdays for its second season this fall. Based on her volunteer training, the actress is able to bring authentic insight into her role as Dr. Natalie Manning. “I was so excited to be able to take what I’ve learned and meld these two worlds.”

“I was so excited to be able to take what I ’ve learned and meld these two worlds.”

When DeVitto is filming in Chicago, she takes Beau and Homie with her, where they get to go on their own adventures. “I found someone in Chicago to pick them up in the morning and drop them off in the evening. They get to play with other dogs and not just sit in my trailer. They get to live their own lives.” And when she’s filming in LA, her sister Maryelle steps in as a co-parent. “If I ever need to go on a weekend trip, she watches them for me.” DeVitto loves talking about her pets and philanthropy, but she’s

stress of war. Veterans will be paired with a shelter dog, cat, or rabbit that matches their lifestyle and needs. It is a huge, but important, undertaking. The shelter animals will undergo training with a professional to learn good manners and to be desensitized to things like wheelchairs and crutches. They will be able to recognize anxiety or panic and ease that stress. It is a win-win in Bob Fragasso’s eyes for both the veterans and the shelter animals. “The companionship is a proven solution to allow

BOB FRAGASSO & ANIMAL FRIENDS: Companionship at its Best BY HEATHER PENN

“In Allegheny County, approximately 20,000 animals are euthanized every year, unwarranted,” Bob explained. Unwarranted because of the overflow of animals in shelters. In response to this horrific number, one of Animal Friends’ most important, ongoing initiatives its their Low-Cost Spay/ Neuter program. The staff at Animal Friends will take in dogs and cats and perform the spay or neuter procedure—which typically costs $200—for free for lower-income families. Bob and the staff at Animal Friends believe that this initiative will “stem the unconscionable rate of euthanasia.”

Walking into his light-filled office at Fragasso Advisors, one can’t help but notice Chairman and CEO Bob Fragasso’s vast array of framed family portraits. There are photos of himself, his wife, and children, but also beautifully photographed portraits of his dogs, whom, after only a few minutes spent with Mr. Fragasso, you absolutely know he considers “family,” too. Bob Fragasso has served on the Board of Directors of Animal Friends, the no-kill shelter located on Camp Horne Road in Pittsburgh, for 25 years. Bob, the rest of the board, and the amazing staff at Animal Friends work tirelessly to get stray dogs, cats, and domesticated animals, like rabbits, off the streets, out of kill shelters and puppy mills, and into loving homes for a chance at a new life. 22

During Memorial Day weekend this year, at their Bark in the Park event in North Park, Bob Fragasso and Animal Friends, together with an abundance of dogs, local friends and supporters, kicked off Animal Friends’ new program “Pets for Vets”. Many of our veterans come home from tours of duty experiencing unresolved stress, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Unfortunately, resources are often strained, and these veterans find themselves unable to receive the necessary emotional support they need at some of the most vital times. This is where Pets for Vets comes in.

JET SET: DOG-FRIENDLY

NAPA VALLEY

HOW TO FLY VICTOR - PETS ON JETS: Start your Napa Valley getaway with your furry friend on the right paw by traveling “Furs Class." Victor, a private and charter plane service, offers travelers its Pets on Jets program. The folks at Victor looked at the stress that dogs can endure when they are made to fly in the cargo hold; it can be dark, cold, and often scary. Victor set out to "say no to cargo,” and thus, Pets on Jets was born.

Picturesque Napa Valley, renowned for its exceptional wineries and stunning landscape, also happens to be a dog-friendly destination. Treat your pup to a vacation basking in the California sunshine while you sip a glass of some of the finest Pinot Noir. 24

Traveling "Furs Class" means that your dog (or cat, if you're a cat person) gets to fly sitting right next to you in the cabin. Tickets are booked just as they are for people, on a per-seat basis. (That's right. Your dog gets an actual seat on a Victor jet!) And your dog can enjoy the same in-flight amenities as you—food, drink, comfortable seats, and a view over the scenic United States on your way to Napa Valley vineyards. Contact Victor at info@flyvictor.com or visit www.flyvictor.com to see where they fly and book your flight.

WHERE TO "GO" JFK TERMINAL 4: Airplane travel with your dog can often mean long lines in security and ample time spent at the gate waiting for departure. That means Fido might have to hold it for quite some time. Airports across the United States have recognized the increase in people flying with their pets and have taken steps to ensure comfort by incorporating pet relief areas post-security. Philadelphia International, Phoenix Sky Harbor International, Detroit Metro, and Reno-Tahoe International are just a few of the airports that have installed outdoor pet relief areas once you are through security and at your gate. But it is Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York that’s the cat's meow. At the end of April 2016, the first indoor Pet Relief Area opened in Terminal 4: a 70-square-foot single-stall restroom specifically for your furry travel companion. Outfitted with a green turf "lawn" and a red fire hydrant, your pup can now “potty” in private at JFK. The facility also includes dog waste bags, a hose to rinse off the area, and a wash sink to keep everything clean and fresh for Fido's upcoming flight. If you happen to be departing from JetBlue's Terminal 5 at JFK, you can take your pooch up to the 4,000-square-foot outdoor garden patio, complete with a designated "wooftop" relief area. Visit www.jfkiat.com for more information and a map of Terminal 4.

STAY! BARDESSONO HOTEL & SPA : Once you arrive in Napa, treat yourself and your dog to the most luxe of accommodations by booking a stay at the Bardessono Hotel & Spa. Located in foodie haven Yountville, CA, your pooch will be greeted in style at BARKdessono with his or her own "Bone Appetit" welcome package. The "Bone Appetit" package for traveling pets (standard when you book with a pet, according to General Manager Nanci Sherman) includes a luxurious pet bed (in three sizes), toys in the room, as well as food and water bowls. Bardessono makes sure that your dog experiences the finest of California cuisine with a three-course meal with water pairings, prepared by the kitchen of the hotel's lovely on-premises restaurant, Lucy. Organic kibble, organic chicken, and the freshest of vegetables will be enjoyed by your dog, who is free to dine with you. The restaurant also bakes grain-free, gluten-free dog biscuits on the premises for visiting canines. Bardessono also features its DogBar Happy Hour the first Tuesday of the month, through October. The $25 cover benefits the Napa Valley Humane Society and includes a glass of wine from some of the area's finest vineyards (for the human, of course), a gift for the dogs in attendance, and light bites. Centrally located in Yountville, Bardessono is perfect for a walk with your dog (the hotel offers dog walking, as well). You'd be wise to walk to nearby Bouchon Bakery, run by esteemed local, world-renowned chef Thomas Keller. While enjoying your morning coffee and pain au chocolat, your pup will be treated to the ultimate in decadent dog treats: foie gras dog biscuits, made in-house. At only $1 each, or a box of seven for $7, it is the perfect indulgence for your winecountry-loving canine. To book at Bardessono, visit www.bardessono.com or call (707) 204-6000. RAFAEL MANTESSO ARTWORK THAT GIVES 'MAN'S BEST FRIEND' A WHOLE NEW MEANING

MANIAC art

BY LAUREN SHAFFER, PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAFAEL MANTESSO

One of the benefits of having a pet is unconditional loyalty. Whether intentionally or inadvertently, at some point human interaction can hurt, whether it’s an ill-timed word, canceled plans, or a breakup. A pet will never talk down to you, stand you up, or reject you. To you, they are one of many pets in your lifetime, but to them, you are their only human. On his 30th birthday, Rafael Mantesso’s wife left him, leaving him with nothing but bare white walls and their bull terrier, Jimmy Choo. To work through the heartbreak, Mantesso decided to photograph Jimmy against these white walls with tongue-in-cheek illustrations. “I do not consider myself a photographer,” said Mantesso. “I’m not a good photographer; I’m an artist that uses the camera as a tool to express myself. Like my drawings, they are not good alone, but combined, they have a powerful message.” Through Mantesso’s photographs, the loving visionary relationship between Jimmy and his owner is apparent. By using minimal props, a white room, and endless creativity, the canine photography team takes you on many of Jimmy’s adventures. He rides a bike, straddles a crocodile, shoots some hoops, and gets a revealing X-ray. Even after the worst day, these whimsical photographs can bring a smile to your face or ignite your imagination. Buying a pet is not the cure-all for a bad breakup or any kind of tough life situation. However, if you are ready for the responsibility and time commitment, the relationship between a pet and owner can be priceless, whether or not you have artistic proclivities. A pet can provide undying fidelity that some people are just not capable of. The art created through Mantesso and Jimmy demonstrates a bond that’s strong enough to be expressed in photography, even if the love is beyond imagination. Check out more of Mantesso’s work at jimmythebull.com or follow him on Instagram @rafaelmantesso.

FROM DINE TO DESIGN,

HUTTON HOTEL

HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES BY RUBY SCALO, PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HUTTON HOTEL

When you walk through the doors of the Hutton Hotel, located in the heart of America’s “Music City,” Nashville, TN, you immediately feel that country beat. This high-end, eco-forward boutique hotel is less than a mile from Music Row, home to hundreds of businesses serving country, gospel, and contemporary Christian music industries. The notes of this historically melodic city are omnipresent in the design and feel of this casually chic hotel, including musically themed artwork. Guests feel at home in the comfortable-yet-refined lobby, featuring earth-toned leather couches and ottomans scattered across the warm dark floors and cozy rugs.

Aside from suite options, the Hutton Hotel also has two “Penthouse Apartments,” completely secluded from the rest of the hotel. Each include multiple bedrooms, two full bathrooms with a steam shower in the master bath, a fireplace, a balcony, a 42” HDTV with surround sound, and twicedaily maid service. Guests reside in peace above the hustle and bustle of the lively city below, while having convenient access to an upscale farm-to-table restaurant downstairs. The 1808 Grille serves traditional American Southern style cooking, a perfect fit for a true Tennessee experience. If you are a vegetarian or have food restrictions, this is the place to be, as all-natural, organic food choices are available for everyone. With a stellar reputation, this top-notch, sophisticated restaurant is classy and intimate for hotel guests or foodies passing through the city. The menus rotate with the seasons and include lunch dishes such as the open-face crab cake sandwich served with rosemary focaccia, and entrées including braised short ribs—for meltin-your-mouth, fall-off-the-bone, savory deliciousness. If you happen to save room, sweet cornbread served with bourbon

sorghum drizzle and Cruze’s buttermilk ice cream are a great way to top off a hearty Southern meal. When it comes to sustainability, the hotel itself is recycled from an old office building, repurposed to meet the needs of modern guests and their high-tech desires. Along with magnificent views of downtown Nashville, one thing all of the hotel rooms and suites have in common is beautiful granite showers with rain showerheads. Green amenities include reclaimed wood furnishings in the restaurant, biodegradable cleaning products, and renewable bamboo flooring, among other features.

Pets can be found cuddling up to their owners in the lobby under the warm LED lighting, and the Happy Tails Pet Program ensures that pets receive the same excellent service as the human guests. On designated pet floors, the hotel offers an in-room menu for guests’ pups or kittens, special bedding, food and water bowls, grooming, dog walking, and signature pet spa treatments to pamper Man’s Best Friend. If you are looking for “boutique elegance in the heart of Nashville,” the Hutton Hotel, located at 1808 West End Avenue, strikes the perfect chord. For more information, visit www.huttonhotel.com/.

In addition to being foodie- and eco-friendly, Hutton is also welcoming to animals.

When it comes to room options, the Hutton Hotel has something for everyone. The exercise-inspired “Cardio King” offers guests an in-room elliptical to work out in private, while the “Forum Room” provides a 50” HDTV, a boardroom 32

It feels new and special to have it begin here and shoot here. We’re very proud of our small part of helping to solidify Pittsburgh’s reputation as a place of creativity and innovation.

” You may not have heard of the Pittsburghbased film production company, Animal, but chances are you’ve seen its work— or you will be seeing it soon. Though its creators have worked mainly in the realm of commercials, they have also produced two films and most recently a television show, which was picked up by ABC. As you may have guessed from its company name, Animal is an animalfocused company, with a very special trademark.

THIS PITTSBURGH PRODUCTION COMPANY IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF BREED

“When he moved back to Pittsburgh and we started Animal, we felt that this was a good niche to put out there to get national attention. And it worked—we’ve done dozens of talking-animal campaigns.” Animal’s work in TV commercials may be what made the company famous, but ads are not the only projects under its belt. One of the company’s goals has always been to create its own content, and thus it heavily encourages employees to pursue passion projects. Its first film, Blood Brother, won the Grand Jury and the Audience awards at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Its second film, Almost Holy, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2015 and just had its theatrical release this past May. Now Animal has another exciting project on the way: its first TV show. In staying true to its “talking-animal roots,” Killen teamed up with Sam Hodges to create and produce a series of shorts exploring how a dog might feel as it ages. These shorts were turned into a TV show called Downward Dog, which was just picked up by ABC and stars Fargo’s Allison Tolman. This is a big step for Animal and for the city of Pittsburgh. “So much of Pittsburgh’s great talent leaves and writes about it, or another show comes to town to shoot our great city,” said Dziubek. “But it feels new and special to have it begin here and shoot here. We’re very proud of our small part of helping to solidify Pittsburgh’s reputation as a place of creativity and innovation.” To learn more about Animal and its many projects, visit animalvfx.com.

Founded in 2001 by Michael Killen, Jim Kreitzburg, and Kathy Dziubek, Animal’s name was inspired by Killen and Kreitzburg’s successful talkinganimal special effects. “Michael worked for many years in California on the Taco Bell talkingChihuahua campaign,” said Dziubek.

YOU'VE PROBABLY ENJOYED CENACOLO PASTA

and Don't Even Know It BY RUBY SCALO, PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUBY SCALO

If you’ve ever eaten pasta at an Italian restaurant in the Pittsburgh area, you’ve more than likely tasted the homemade creations made from Cenacolo Restaurant’s Fede Pasta market. The Fede wholesale pasta business began in the basement of Cenacolo's owner Steve Salvi’s in 2005. But eight years later, in 2013, Salvi had a vision of expansion and decided to fuse Fede and Cenacolo into one. Even though Fede supplies more than 100 Pittsburgh restaurants with pasta, its location in Cenacolo is about 40 minutes southeast of the city, nestled in Banco Business Park in Irwin. As a true family restaurant where everyone is welcome to enjoy vast amounts of fabulous Italian food made on-site, Cenacolo has a menu full of Salvi’s famously fresh pasta dishes, paired with creative tasteful Italian ingredients. In 38

fact, the word “Cenacolo” is the Italian religious translation of “the last supper.” The food is decadent, fresh, and noticeably handled with expertise and care. The meal begins with fresh baked bread served with a side of sweet, spreadable honey butter. Next, the simple yet delicious house salad of arugula, cherry tomatoes, and fresh thickly grated parmesan cheese is topped with a balsamic glaze dressing that is both sweet and tangy. This salad appears natural and easy, but is a marvelous and beautiful part of the meal that sets the stage for the star: the pasta dish. You have a choice of 14 different pasta entrées that are, of course, homemade in house and all diverse, delicious, and unique in taste and flavor.

Another crowd favorite is the Tagliolini, a bright combination of flat spaghetti pasta, crabmeat, garlic, chives, lemon, and grated Parmesan cheese. The combination of the buttery taste of seafood with garden-fresh flavors and pasta swirled into each other tantalize your taste buds. The wine list includes a variety of reds and whites that are meant to pair with the pasta dishes as they change by the season. The white wine recommendation that is both sweet and dry is the Tiki Sound Sauvignon Blanc served both by the glass and bottle. Cenacolo is a true hidden gem that is undeniably worth the drive outside of the Pittsburgh area for a brilliant dinner or lunch full of unbelievably delicious homemade flavors. Plus, complimentary limoncello and amaretto cookies are served after each meal. Yum! Visit Cenacolo Restaurant at 1061 Main Street in Irwin or online at www.cenacolorestaurant.com.

BORROW MY DOGGY APP MATCHES DOGS WITH DOG LOVERS FOR A SPECIAL PRICE BY RAEANN MACNEIL, PHOTOS COURTESY OF BORROW MY DOGGY

Dog lovers and owners alike can rest easy knowing the Borrow My Doggy app exists. We’ve all heard of online dating, and most people have at least dabbled in social media sites like Facebook, but how about an app that matches your dog with a person? That’s exactly what Borrow My Doggy is all about: an app that helps dog owners in the UK and Ireland find someone to watch, walk, and play with their dogs.

DATING IS RUFF THIS APP SHOULD BE THE 'FURST' STOP FOR DOG LOVERS BY INDIGO BALOCH, PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY YOU MUST LOVE DOGS

Founder Rikke Rosenlund designed the service to be used by dog lovers for dog lovers, and it’s a little different from how traditional pet-sitting works. Borrow My Doggy doesn’t exist to help others make money. Dog borrowers help these dogs and their owners because they genuinely want to! The app’s currency is what they call “Pawprints of Happiness,” with the aim to create a community of dog lovers, not a paid service. Those who may be wary of online communication turning into a face-to-face encounter can relax with the security that Borrow My Doggy offers. Personal information must be verified, and users are encouraged to be honest about their experience in dog handling. In addition, all members are covered by a third-party liability insurance, as well as having round-the-clock access to a veterinarian. Not only does Borrow My Doggy provide a helping hand for those in need, but it manages to do so with a positive and cheerful attitude. The website is littered with dog puns, using phrases like “pawsome” instead of “awesome” and “pawsible” instead of “possible.” They even call the first meeting between an owner, borrower, and the dog a “Welcome Woof.” Doggone it, it's as charming as it is brilliant. Check it out for yourself. Visit www.borrowmydoggy.com.

If you've grown tired of barking up all of the wrong trees and are ready to find the perfect mate who loves your furry friends as much as you do, it's time to check out the You Must Love Dogs Dating community— where you can finally find a partner who loves you and your pooch. The site was created by Kris Rotonda when he realized he wasn't the only dog lover trying to find a companion. Tired of waiting for a soulmate in the dog park, Rotonda decided to create a community that would help people just like him find their perfect match. While building the site, Kris fell in love with Denise, and the pair launched the You Must Love Dogs Dating app together. Since then they've gone on to create a YouTube channel called the "Doggy Cooking Network" and the PupPot (a kit to help owners make homecooked meals and treats for their dogs).

And what if you find a user in need of a little "obedience training"? Don't worry, they offer blocking and reporting options so you can get the user out of your fur and find a match better suited for you. If you’re looking for someone who’ll love both you and your canine companion, YouMustLoveDogsDating.com can help you find potential mates. Sign up today and start feeling the puppy love.

Similar to services like OkCupid, You Must Love Dogs Dating is available online and in app form. You begin by making a profile to tell potential matches a bit about yourself, and after that, browse prospective partners, one of which may be the love of your and Fido’s life (he or she will probably have his or her own dog, too!). Sign-up is free, but if you find yourself wanting more, they do offer advanced features for paying members, including private messaging, and best of all, a featured profile video. While pictures and words tell people a lot about you, videos can be so much more personal, and it gives potential matches the opportunity to see you and your pup in action. Don't just tell them you're a dog lover—show them. 43

MANIAC feature The BIG EASY’s new location also comes with new services. In August 2015, Dog Daze & Café opened right next door. Owned and operated by The BIG EASY, Dog Daze offers boarding, daycare, and grooming. “What’s better than taking your dog to a vet-owned facility? We operate with the same ethics as the hospital to give clients peace of mind. Trained technicians are on-site and allow us to take in pets with special needs.” The café portion of Dog Daze is expected to open in time for the facility’s one-year anniversary in August 2016. “We are hoping to partner with Grounds for Hounds, a non-profit formerly located in Pittsburgh but now based in Los Angeles,” Dietz said. “We’ll also serve Cuban pastries. It will be a really great spot where you can grab a cup of coffee with your pet.”

BIG CHANGES FOR

THE BIG EASY

in Lawrenceville BY SARAH MEYERS, PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE BIG EASY

Newly located on McCandless Avenue in Lawrenceville, The BIG EASY Animal Hospital (TBEAH) is bringing a bit of New Orleans to Pittsburgh. After being displaced from her home during Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Aileen Ruiz relocated to Pittsburgh, where she decided to open the city’s first Hispanic veterinary hospital. Since its inception in 2010 on Butler Street, The BIG EASY has cared for countless animals, focusing on affordable and thoughtful care. Maniac had the opportunity to speak with Becky Dietz, Practice Manager and Head Technician at The BIG EASY, about the exciting changes happening at the hospital. “We outgrew our Butler Street location,” said Dietz. “We only had room for one file cabinet and people and their pets were waiting on the sidewalk.”

50

One dog in particular has captured the hearts of The BIG EASY staff. Diamond became a permanent resident of Dog Daze & Café when her owners wanted to euthanize her due to her old age and difficulty with children. The BIG EASY staff rescued her, and she now spends her days romping around Dog Daze and enjoying belly rubs. “We do whatever it takes to ensure every animal has a safe home,” said Dietz. Dog Daze serves almost 40 dogs every day through daycare and is nearly to full capacity on the weekends with boarded cats and dogs.

“We do whatever it takes to ensure every animal has a safe home.”

When asked what makes The BIG EASY unique in comparison to other local animal hospitals, Dietz responded, “We don’t turn any animal away. We offer walk-in hours and our doctors spend time with the clients, explaining exactly what is happening and how they are treating their pets. We also don’t price gouge or pressure clients into unnecessary treatments.” This pet-first mentality is what TBEAH prides itself on and allows it to continue to be a Pittsburgh favorite. Interested in having your pet treated by The BIG EASY Animal Hospital? Want to send your furry friend to Dog Daze & Café while you’re at work or out of town? Visit them at 12 McCandless Avenue in Lawrenceville or check out www.tbeah.com for more information.

Once Arbor’s paintings started to get noticed, they were auctioned off to donate money to local shelters. The highest painting sold for $2,100, so not only is Arbor a great example of a shelter animal herself, but she also helps raise money for cats and dogs who need homes. “The message we like to convey to people is that you can find great dogs in the shelter,” said Henderson. “You don’t need to go to a pet store. They may not end up painting like Arbor, but they’ll be a loving companion.” With the help of social media, especially Facebook, Arbor started the No Kill Las Vegas organization for the shelter she came from. When her owners found out that the shelter wasn’t active or progressive in the killings of 60 percent of the animals coming in, they decided to do more on social media, showing what was happening in other cities like Seattle, Portland, and Kansas City, where 90 percent of the animals were being saved as part of the No Kill Movement.

Arbor the Dog PAINTING A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR SHELTER ANIMALS

Arbor and her owners held protests and rallies promoting the unfairness of the killing of animals, and the Ambassadog of Las Vegas even painted signs. Last June, the shelter set a five-year goal to become a part of the No Kill Movement. “I believe it’s from direct efforts of Arbor, because of her notoriety and Facebook presence, that she has saved thousands of lives,” said Henderson. “Arbor encourages people to adopt from local shelters and read up on cities that are saving animals rather than killing them.”

BY MEGAN BROWN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRYCE HENDERSON

The concept of creating a piece of imagery from a blank canvas and paint can be a challenge for some people, so imagine how difficult it is for a dog. But a paintbrush and teeth work well for Las Vegas’s painting canine, Arbor. Known as a doggie activist and artist, Arbor has risen to fame after a video of her painting appeared on Good Morning America in 2012. “Her success began with local stations around Las Vegas,” said Bryce Henderson, who owns Arbor with his wife Jennifer. “Her Facebook page really promoted her fame, too.” With more than half a million likes on her Go Vegas Dog Facebook page, Arbor has stayed active with her fan base, promoting her talents along with the mission to help rescue animals, since Arbor herself is a rescue dog.

Stay updated on Arbor’s active lifestyle and artwork by liking her Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GoVegasDog.

“ The message we like to convey to people is that you can find great dogs in the shelter, You don’t need to go to a pet store."

But when it comes to her artistic talent, Arbor didn’t become Paw-casso overnight. “It was something we had to teach her,” Henderson said. “We knew she was very smart and we were impressed.” Once they saw she was doing well with basic tricks, they started more complicated tasks. “I came home one day, and there was a painting in the living room and my wife Jennifer said ‘Arbor did that.’”

MANIAC feature “In the areas we have supported, we have seen a major decrease in shelter intake, but there is so much more to do.” On Thursday, October 20, 2016, FGP will host its fifth annual auction event at The Estate in Buckhead in Atlanta, where a very special guest will be in attendance: Maniac Magazine’s own Chloe Hubal. Pittsburgh’s celebrity therapy dog, who frequently makes visits to Children’s Hospital, will be on hand for the Red Carpet Fete event, which will include live entertainment, signature cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres. Through events like this one, Fix Georgia Pets has been able to raise money and spread awareness about this regional issue, and most importantly, prevent the needless killing of animals. “We provided free spay and neutering services to more than 5,000 pets in 2015,” said Millner. “We are hoping to double that in 2016.” Help control Georgia’s pet population by visiting fixgeorgiapets.org for more information or save a Georgia dog’s life by making a donation atwww.fixgeorgiapets. org. And if you're interested in securing low-cost spay and neutering options in Southwestern Pennsylvania, visit www. thinkingoutsidethecage.org for more information.

FIX GEORGIA PETS

HOPES TO PATCH UP ITS PET PROBLEM BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIX GEORGIA PETS

The state of Georgia has a huge dilemma. “Across the South, pet overpopulation is a much bigger problem than other areas of the country,” said Ginny Millner, founder of the Fix Georgia Pets foundation which raises money to drive down the cost of spay and neutering services for people who can’t afford them. “We are currently targeting the counties with the largest problem and creating models for these counties so they can help themselves.” Fix Georgia Pets was created when Millner decided to focus her energy on the consistent pet overpopulation issue facing her region. As an animal advocate, she loved rescuing animals in the area, but realized the only way to solve the unnecessary euthanization of her furry friends was through spay and neutering services. Today, Fix Georgia Pets is in its fifth year of life, although it’s much more in pet years.

CALL OFF YOUR DOGS! WE CAUGHT UP WITH

Lake Street Dive Bassist Bridget Kearney

Maniac Magazine caught up with LSD’s bassist, Bridget Kearney, and asked her about future band projects, fashion, and what Side Pony really means. Maniac Magazine: You’ve made frequent stops in Pittsburgh. In 2014, at Mr. Smalls Theatre and Hartwood Acres, and now in 2016 at the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Is Pittsburgh a go-to city when it comes to touring now? 58

MM: Every Halloween, you do a special cover song. Do you have any idea what you’re going to do this year?

MM: You and Rachael Price (lead singer) were recently featured in The New Yorker for undergoing platza treatments at the Russian & Turkish Baths on East Tenth Street in New York (platza involves being beaten with a broom of oak leaves). How did that come about? Is that your new way to unwind between tours?

BK: We haven’t selected one yet! We used to do only bands with two girls and two guys in them, but last year we abandoned that restriction to do a Queen song, so now the possibilities are endless. We also always learn a lot from doing cover songs—it’s like wearing a musical Halloween costume. You get a chance to inhabit the character of whomever’s song it is, get inside their head a bit, and see the world from their perspective. MM: Side Pony presumably refers to the ponytail hairstyle, but what does it mean to you and your band since you chose it as an album title?

BK: When The New Yorker wanted to interview us, it seemed like an opportunity to take a vacation in my own city, do something I might not do in my day-to-day life as a New Yorker. Now that I’ve experienced the East Village Russian & Turkish Bath House, though, I might have to start incorporating it into my daily life. It was awesome! MM: You guys all have an amazing style. Where do you shop?

Bridget Kearney (left in photo above) : We love Pittsburgh! It’s a beautiful city full of people who like to party. What’s not to like?

BK: Thanks! We like to shop on the road. It’s not uncommon that where a cool music venue is there will also be a cool thrift store nearby. By the end of the tour, your suitcase is generally a little fuller (or maybe exactly the same size because the thrift store purchases balance out the amount of things lost at venues and hotel rooms). It’s fun to look at your clothes and remember where you got each item. And if it’s secondhand, you can imagine all the people from all over the world whose clothes you are now wearing, which is weird!

MM: Lake Street Dive’s new album, Side Pony, is a little more soulful and funkier than other albums. What other genres of music is LSD interested in exploring in the future?

MM: Your first TV appearance was on The Colbert Report in 2014, when Stephen Colbert said he was giving you guys “the Colbert Bump.” Since then, what has been your craziest moment of “celebrity”?

BK: Oftentimes we’ll be inspired by one element of another type of music, like harmonic motion for example, and incorporate that specific idea into our existing sonic palette. That way you get something new, instead of saying, “Hey guys, let’s make a ‘70s funk track!” and

BK: We got to sing backup for Paul Simon recently on the Later. . .With Jools Holland in the UK! That was completely surreal. He’s a huge hero of ours, and one of the first musicians we realized we all had in common, as a favorite songwriter and singer.

BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOS COURTESY OF BIG HASSLE MEDIA

Despite the address in their name, Lake Street Dive is all over the map, from tour dates around the world to appearances on Netflix’s House of Cards. Most recently, you may have seen the band when they headlined 2016’s Three Rivers Arts Festival.

copying every element from that era of music. Right now I’m really into Balinese Gamelan music, so we’ll see where that takes us!

BK: Side Pony came to represent an embracing of alternative lifestyles. A side pony is, by definition, not in the center, and it’s also somewhat blatant in its asymmetry. We thought that was a good metaphor for what we do as a band and on this record—off-kilter, fun, unabashed music. Visit lakestreetdive.com to see upcoming tour dates or follow them on Twitter and Instagram at @lakestreetdive.

Recently a very important group received a new place to work out in Pittsburgh: the canines of The Dog Stop. The Smallman Street facility converted its loading dock space into a new training area, preserving much of the original industrial elements, while creating a bright, functional space for pups to practice. “We outfitted the space with obstacles for ‘urban agility,’ including jumps, tunnels, weave poles, a bridge, and an A-frame,” said The Dog Stop Training co-founder and corporate trainer Brett Reynolds. “We have two dog treadmills for fitness and endurance training for dogs of any size or breed.” The 1,500-square-foot area allows for everything from group classes to private lessons to a small retail area. Plus, rubber flooring gives the dogs traction while providing cushion for their joints. Overall, the new training center is perfect for helping these dogs learn the most important thing when it comes to obedience and discipline: trust. “Trust in their handler makes a dog more cooperative and open to learning new things,” said Reynolds. “Much like in human relationships, good communication is also a key element in training dogs. Communication needs to contain instruction and feedback. It also needs to be binary; dogs should be told frequently when they are doing well, in addition to when they make mistakes.” One of The Dog Stop’s most famous clients is Maniac Magazine’s own Chloe, who has been a faithful student to the program.

The Dog Stop GETS YOUR DOG INTO SHAPE, INSIDE AND OUT BY MEGAN MCLACHLAN, PHOTOGRAPHY BY JC—TDS TRAINING

“Chloe and I competed in Rally Obedience and have conquered many other training challenges, including agility, scent detection, and object retrieval. Chloe is also a wonderful therapy dog and visits Children’s Hospital frequently.” In fact, therapy dog preparation is one of the classes available at The Dog Stop; the center has a walker, crutches, and a wheelchair for training with medical equipment. One thing Reynolds and The Dog Stop staff want patrons to know is that there’s more to doggy daycare than just a place for pups to engage in group play during the day. “Dogs visiting for daycare or boarding will benefit from a variety of activities, such as an obedience session, treadmill training, or obstacle training. We feel these additional services improve the overall quality of dogs’ days and provide enrichment and mental stimulation to prevent boredom. Dogs are generally happier when they are provided with clear leadership in all aspects of life.” Check out the new facility and bring in your little buddy for a session at 2530 Smallman Street. To find a location near you, visit thedogstop.net.

Dog Parent Dog parents are special people. Along with the unique ability to love unconditionally, they also are known to be compassionate, devoted, loving, responsible, and smart. Not just anyone can date a dog parent, though. There are things one must know when choosing to be with a person who truly loves his or her dog.

and source of unconditional love. So the love a dog parent has for his or her fur-child is a super special bond that should be shown consideration if the relationship is going to work. It may seem weird to those who do not share such interests, but it’s perfectly normal for those that do.

To begin with, the one thing you should never say to a dog parent is “It’s just a dog.” Such a low blow. Dogs are part of the family, much like a child. Humans are capable of caring for themselves. The more independent you are, in fact, the better the relationship can be. Dogs only have their owners. So they have to be priority above everything else, especially when they are hurt, sick, or in need. Booked a flight a year in advance and the dog gets sick? Don’t be angry or taken aback when he or she stays with the dog instead. Would you leave your child in such condition? Neither would a dog parent.

Dating a dog parent comes with its benefits and challenges. Accepting that you will normally always come second to the dog is essential. You will often hear stories about their dog, as well as other dogs. Be prepared for the dog parent to love all dogs, thus, when a dog is in sight, there is a chance that he or she will stop to either observe, comment, or pet the dog. One really amazing thing about dating a dog parent is that the best gift they could ever receive is one for their dog, so wondering what to give them will be pretty easy.

Plus, if he or she takes such great care of his or her dog, imagine how well you will be taken care of. When you get sick, not only will you have your partner, but you will also have Fido’s love. Double cuddles are a pretty regular occurrence. Sometimes the dog just loves sleeping in the middle, and if they cuddle on you, you must be pretty awesome, because dogs are a great judge of character. Second, dog parents have very few boundaries. From kisses to baby talk to cuddling, there really are no restrictions (with the exception of not feeding them people food, which could harm them). Typically whatever the dog needs, the dog’s mom or dad will accommodate. Why shouldn’t they? Dogs are the ultimate best friend, companion,

Finally, one of the most important things about dating a dog parent is having the understanding that they chose to take on the commitment of taking care of their dog for the rest of its life. Dogs run the roost. The more you are able to respect the lifestyle and nature of being a dog parent, the more rewarding it will be to date one.

While operating my own pet sitting business over an eight-year period, I became increasingly concerned about the various health afflictions that I was seeing in my customers’ dogs and cats. The list of ailments appearing over and over again included allergies, itchy skin, ear infections, autoimmune disorders and a multitude of other problems. I began researching these health concerns and discovered that every symptom seemed to point to food and environment. This made perfect sense because I am a firm believer that we are what we eat. It is apparent that our beloved pets are what they eat as well. I had to do something! Coincidentally there was a local store up for sale that only sold natural pet food and treats. I bought the store in 2008 to spread the word about how important it is to feed quality pet food to our pets. I adopted Meg on February, 2002. The Animal Rescue League thought she was around 6 months to a year old. I didn’t know about raw feeding or “what’s really in grocery store kibble” till about 6 months after adopting her. There we were heading down the conventional road of low quality kibble,

treats and conventional medicine. Fortunately, I was in the right place at the right time. I walked into a grooming shop to inquire about their services. Literally, as I walked in I witnessed the owner giving her dog a raw chicken leg. I flipped out and said, “Are you crazy? You are going to kill that dog. Dogs can’t have RAW chicken bones!” The owner proceeded to tell me about raw feeding and it was if someone flicked a switch on in my head. It made total sense to me that this is their evolutionary diet and what they should be eating for optimum health. I immediately went and bought the recommended books and began feeding Meg raw. One day Meg was eating Purina One and the next day raw! And, are you ready for this, NO DIARRHEA! I am so thankful I did. I don’t have a tear jerking life saving story to tell. What I can say is Meg is different. She has boundless energy spending her days

chasing moles, squirrels and chipmunks and often catching one! Her coat is soft as angora, which is the first thing people mention when meeting her. Meg has the clearest eyes, cleanest teeth and ears, is lean and muscular. Since then I have been doing research on basic pet nutrition and the pet food industry. I have found that many of the ailments our pets are suffering from these days can be greatly improved or completely eliminated with premium pet foods, raw feeding and supplementation (and do I dare mention less vaccinations). My true passion in life is to reach as many people as I possibly can to help them to understand what better nutrition can do for their pet and in turn do for them. I hope you stop in sometime soon to meet Meg, myself and my staff and see what we can offer your pets. Find us on

On the move? New to town, or just a new neighborhood? If you haven’t tried transit before maybe now is the time. Port Authority has convenient and frequent service to and from the urban areas of Pittsburgh. East Liberty is the heart of the East End’s transit service. Many Port Authority bus routes use the East Busway to bypass local traffic including the P1 and P3 from East Liberty’s busway station which offer quick rides to Downtown and Oakland. Various other routes have stops on Penn Ave. and serve just about anywhere in the East End of the city. Living Downtown? You CAN get anywhere from here. You can catch a bus or T to almost anywhere in Allegheny County. Groceries in the Strip District, take the 88. For all the flavor of Lawrenceville the 91 works. Nearly all of Port Authority's 100 routes travel in and out of Downtown. For more neighborhoods go to onthemove.portauthority.org and make this town your own.
