BIGGER BITE

MANIAC TA K E A B I G G E R B I T E OU T TA L I F E

My dear Maniacs, People always seem to possess a different kind of relationship with their rings and necklaces than they do their sweaters and boots. Although someone might be upset when they’ve accidentally bleached their favorite sweater, if you lose a favorite pair of earrings, you mourn that loss for years. Even if it’s just a piece of costume jewelry that you bought for yourself on a whim, if you’ve had them for long enough, it feels like a part of you is missing. This connection is, in my opinion, gender neutral. Although women might have more jewelry than men, everyone feels that powerful pull towards their favorite pieces. For this issue, Maniac wanted to explore all facets of jewelry to give you the ultimate experience. From going shopping for diamonds in Brussels, to antique watch collectors, to “push presents,” jewelry isn’t just something that sparkles. For some, it’s a way of celebrating life, for others, it’s their entire livelihood. In fact, our featured jewelry bloggers have long since moved away from behind the computer—now, they’re styling celebrities at the BAFTAs, designing their own custom lines, and occasionally collaborating with Chanel. Pittsburgh’s own Jonathan and Lauren Tesauro can attest to the power jewelry has in people’s lives, as their line Brother Wolf is steeped in symbolism. People look for pieces that they connect to emotionally as much as aesthetically. In the end, we’ve discovered that it’s not so much how much money you paid for your favorite piece, it’s the story behind it that makes it special. We hope in this issue you’ll find plenty of interesting stories about, or surrounding, gems of all kinds.

Shine on,

Mia

T

he shimmering metals, intriguing history, and antique, sometimes ancient imagery of the Brother Wolf jewelry line may appear to be the most obvious factors that have led to its seemingly overnight success.

In fact, the term “overnight” in this case is not a huge exaggeration; Brother Wolf has enjoyed the kind of success in a year that many would kill to have within five. However, even the most beautiful jewelry lines can take many years before they truly takeoff. Also, when you consider that Brother Wolf is a Pittsburgh based line, and our city—though its arts and fashion scene is burgeoning—has never been known as a jewelry mecca, you may wonder, how has it been propelled from a local brand to nation-wide success in such a short span of time? Well, it may just have something to do with the sibling duo of Lauren and Jonathan Tesauro. Though they did not invent the Brother Wolf jewelry line, they’ve managed to really put it on the map. I mean that literally. Within just this year, they’ve managed to spread the Brother Wolf line to every corner of the United States, from local Pittsburgh retailers Chapel Hills Jewelry and Louis Anthony Jewelers, all the way out to E.R. Sawyer Jewelers in Santa Rosa, California. “We have about thirty retailers now,” Jonathan tells me before their Maniac cover story. “We add about two or more retailers a month. We’re going at a good pace.” I’m inclined to agree. So who are Lauren and Jonathan Tesauro, and how exactly did this all materialize for them? I must admit, when I first heard of them and this line, I assumed the two would be in their late thirties or forties, both seasoned business and marketing pros. Then Lauren walked in, bubbly and beautiful, to have her hair and makeup done for the cover shoot. She didn’t need to have a whole lot of prep as she has the benefit of being twenty-four and naturally photogenic. After meeting Lauren, one might assume Jonathan is the elder of the two, and perhaps it’s the elder brother who brings the business savvy to their partnership. Although Jonathan certainly is very good at what he does (he manages sales whereas Lauren deals with manufacturing) that assumption is incorrect. Jonathan is the same age as his sister, because they are twins. Although they’re fraternal, the resemblance is uncanny, as Jonathan shares his sister’s genetic gifts of good looks, aquamarine colored eyes, and great business sense. So, how did these two twenty-four year olds get their hands on a small jewelry line, and how have they managed to make it into such a roaring success in such a short amount of time? Surely it must’ve

taken them years of preparation and research to propel it forward at such a fast rate. “We’ve only been doing this for about a year,” says Lauren. At this point, my journalistic vocabulary consisted of a very articulate,“Whaaa?” Although it may seem like these two, and this line, has come out of nowhere, that’s not exactly the case. Most native Pittsburghers are familiar with Chapel Hills Jewelry. They’ve been around since 1989, and are currently located in Aspinwall, just a few minutes away from the Waterworks Shopping Center. Jack and Tina are the husband and wife duo that have run Chapel Hills for years. Both of their children grew up around the business, but it was never Lauren or Jonathan’s intention to be as involved in it as they are now. Up until a year ago, things were humming right along for the Tesauros (which, rather fittingly, means “treasure” in Italian). The twins were preparing for their respective futures. Jonathan was a business turned-history major, who was also pre-law. Lauren was pre-med, a longtime science buff who was aspiring to become a surgeon. Both were clearly already on the path to success, busily preparing for the next stage in their lives, when something threw them onto a different course. “While I was preparing to take my MCATS, our mom had an aneurysm.” Lauren tells me with a heavy sigh. So the twins took on Brother Wolf, the Chapel Hills’ “baby,” as Jonathan put it, to ease the work load while their mother recovered. Lauren pulls out her long necklace, and at the bottom of the chain lies a large, sterling silver antique chaplet. “It’s a finger rosary,” Lauren explains. “It’s one of my mom’s favorite pieces. It was found in the pocket of a World War I soldier.” This is one of the most important aspects of Brother Wolf; the history behind the line. Brother Wolf pieces aren’t ostentatious, but they have a weight about them. Each piece has a story, and is assigned a virtue to symbolize. For example, the antique chaplet’s virtue is “wonder.” Other virtues include “hope,” “courage,” and “strength.” These virtues, and the history of these pieces, are palpably felt by the people who wear them. “One time my mom was wearing this at a restaurant, and the waitress asked to try it on,” Lauren tells me, “And then she burst into tears!” “The connection people have with the pieces is amazing,” Jonathan tells me. “To be honest with you, I haven’t used one ounce of my business background. But I’ve used a lot of what I learned from studying history in finding and selling these pieces.” Jonathan’s piece of choice is a medallion of St. Teresa of Avila. “There is a quote of hers that really speaks to me, and her ‘virtue’ is charisma, which for doing what I do, is important.” 17

18

One of the many strengths of the Brother Wolf line is that it is not composed of cookie-cutter pieces that you could find elsewhere. If you want a piece that looks like what Brother Wolf has, with the story and the care behind it, you have to find a place where Brother Wolf is sold. Each of their pieces possesses a one-of-a-kind, special feeling. This could be due to the fact that these pieces originate from all over Europe, and have been painstakingly chosen by Jonathan and Lauren. The originals are then brought back, and are meticulously reproduced by hand in the United States, and using only the finest materials such as sterling silver and 14-karat gold. “Instinct,” Jonathan reveals, is the secret to knowing which pieces will work for the line. “Each piece has to have meaning; people have to be able to connect to it.” Although it’s certainly a global line, it appears Jonathan and Lauren have no intention of moving its base from Pittsburgh. “I feel like Pittsburgh is often overlooked as a city, in regards to fashion, jewelry—but this generation—our generation— is so hard-working and I hope we’re shining light on that.” Aside from being well-educated and resourceful, Jonathan thinks that there are other more important aspects to the Tesauro twins’ success with Brother Wolf. “Our parents instilled us with a great work ethic; it all comes back to how they raised us. We think about them before we go into every meeting.” He pauses, “Lauren and I know each other’s strengths and weaknesses—we know how to work well together. I always say that I’m the shotgun, and she’s the laser beam. We balance each other out. Although it’s hard to work with family sometimes, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives.” “As a team, I believe that there is no one who can do what we do.” Once again, I’m inclined to agree with Jonathan. KURT PIO:

Making Diamonds Come Alive BY RACHEL SANZONE, PHOTOS COURTESY OF KURT PIO

The saying “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” rings especially true for those of us who are enamored with these beguiling gems. The shapes and colors they refract are endlessly interesting, and have never been so beautifully captured as they have been by Kurt Pio. He is an artist out of Cape Town, South Africa, and his artwork is eclectic, bohemian, and thought-provoking. Though he graduated from Cape Peninsula University of Technology with a national diploma in Interior Design, his career as an interior designer lasted for less than a year, as he quickly found it to be unsatisfying. He then began freelancing as an assistant to the decor editor of VISI Magazine, known as South Africa’s “Most Beautiful Magazine,” which focuses on décor, design, and architecture. Between his lifelong love for painting, his experience through his freelancing gig, and his completion of a Millinery course at Saint Martin’s University in London, Kurt had all of the components needed to make his artistic vision a reality. His “Diamond” series is filled with pieces as beautiful and rare as the gems themselves. With his background in interior design, he has an adept ability to paint works of art that can easily fit in regardless 28

of the environment. The inspiration he takes from the world around him, and his acute sensitivity to color make for exceptional works. Subjects that others might see as simple, such as aloe plants or boys’ faces become abstract and unique masterpieces in Pio’s hands. People all over the world are taking notice. He was selected to feature at the 2013 Turbine Art Fair in Johannesburg, the edit[ed] shop in the Taj Hotel and two solo exhibitions—one at the trending Woodstock Exchange and one as the opening artist at the brand new Smith Gallery in Cape Town. International Trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort snapped up one of his artworks at Smith and installed it in her curated show titled Fetishism, at the Trapholt Museum of Modern Art in Kolding, Denmark. Pio has also received considerable coverage in prominent local interior and lifestyle magazines for the past eight years. When Maniac caught up with Kurt in early September, he was en route to his exhibition in Antwerp at the Life is Art Gallery. Whether it be gorgeous gems, full moons, or eerie portraits of the Queen of England, Kurt Pio’s creative force is seemingly endless. He shines bright like a diamond, and has the skill to capture it for the world to see. To discover more, please visit www.kurtpio.co.za

JET SET: SHOPPING FOR DIAMONDS IN

BRUSSELS BY EMILY DURHAM PHOTOS COURTESY OF HOTEL AMIGO, LA TRUFFE NOIR, MADE IN LOUISE

Why go to Brussels to shop for diamonds? In addition to the close proximity to the diamond district in Antwerp, Brussels has a burgeoning reputation as a mecca of style, art, and design. This fabulous combination makes this city the perfect place to satiate your lust for culture, good food, and of course, diamonds. As soon as you book your ticket, get ready for the most luxurious vacation of your life. 32

WHERE TO STAY Picture a brick façade at dusk, framed by Brussels’s cobbled roads, lighted red flowers hanging from each window. The hotel’s humble exterior houses an upscale paradise; chic stone floors and angular candled-chandelier lighting combine to create a unique fusion of antiquity and modern warmth. The Hotel Amigo is home to 154 rooms and 19 suites, all of which boast marbled bathroom floors and Tintin décor in honor of the popular UK cartoon icon. The Hotel Amigo is the perfect symbol of Brussels tradition laced with contemporary luxury. If your tastes are a little more avant-garde, we recommend the family-owned Made in Louise. With a waist-high outdoor chess set and 48 brightly lit rooms, every nook is filled with character. You’ll love every touch of style, from the deep purple flowers left caringly upon bathroom towels to the French inscription on the wall above the dining room toaster: “J’aime l’odeur du pain trop grillé le matin. Et vous?”

SALON

WHAT TO EAT One of the benefits of staying at Hotel Amigo is easy access to a gourmet meal. Their restaurant Bocconi offers delicious Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, which are combined with the best ingredients Belgium has to offer. Dining in the sumptuous ballroom and eating off of perfectly plated dishes will make you feel like European royalty. If you want to venture into the city for some delicious eats, we recommend Comme chez Soi, where every dish is plated with an artistic eye that would make Renoir proud. Starting with a crustacean-infused gazpacho, moving to a main course of John Dory fillet, and finishing off with orange pancakes topped with burnt sugar, we honestly don’t know how you could be disappointed. If Moroccan cuisine is more your style, try La Kasbah—the ceiling spectacle of 120 sparkling red and gold lanterns is reason enough. In fact, the entire restaurant is filled with red and gold décor, giving it an ambiance that evokes the spirit of Morocco’s historical marketplaces. And last—but definitely not least—La Truffe Noir. Perfect for your late-night cravings of utter decadence, these brilliant chefs have spent a lifetime intensely researching the properties of white and black truffles to bring you the most flawlessly indulgent dishes under the sun. And—wait for it—they have a Diamond Menu. A Diamond Menu. An upscale, truffle-infused, five-course meal that currently includes butterflyshaped salmon, cappuccino of wild partridge, and baby turbot wrapped in potatoes, covered in a vanilla-lobster sauce. If that’s not decadent enough for you, nothing is!

MANIAC music

GEMS:

THE NEXT WAVE OF MUSIC BY DESTINY JOHNSON, PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLLY BURNHAM

GEMS’ story begins much like the popular memoir Just Kids by Patti Smith. However, instead of the iconic duo of Robert Mapplethorpe and Smith, we are presented with a more modern, but just as raw pairing of Lindsay Pitts, and Clifford John Usher, the duo that makes up GEMS. The first time they met, they were outside of a bar in Washington, DC. Little did they know that the conversation that sprung up between them, where they thoroughly discussed music and poetry, would inspire the two to start writing songs together. They couldn’t come from more different backgrounds; Cliff, Nirvana-inspired, was always in and out of bands, while Lindsay sang in choirs and went on to study music at the University of Virginia. The two decided to explore their individual strengths and began developing specific ideas of how they wanted to make people feel with their music. Thus GEMS was born. With Lindsay focusing on harmony and chords, and Cliff playing melody and bass, they ultimately met in the middle, sometimes even starting or finishing lines for one another. The end result is music of great intensity. Much like the name, “GEMS,” a stone being created under tremendous pressure, their sound is hard, solid, and even a little dark. I don’t mean “hard” in an angry or loud sense, either. The sound they produce is really more of a dreamy-pop feel paired with longing, poetic lyrics— yet it still carries a steely quality. 36

In an interview with the destined duo, they explained how their music is about emotion and difficult life experiences. They find the core of what a heartbreak, a journey, or even a night alone feels like, and translate it into art through the words and the beats that back it up. Ultimately, once you’ve listened to a few of their songs from their first full-length album, Kill The One You Love, you’ll understand the raw authenticity. The duo are about to go on tour for the release of the EP, so I felt compelled to ask about how performing live affected their music, what they wanted to get out of the experience, and most importantly, what they wanted to convey to their listeners. Cliff revealed his respect for how Kanye West performs live; how he tries to transcend the concert experience, so that it feels more like performance art. This is what differentiates GEMS from most bands. Whereas others go up, play, maybe jump around a bit, and call it a night, GEMS desires to deeply connect with the audience. They wish to go beyond playing music and turn their live set into dramatic performance. It’s a natural aspiration when you consider their music. When you pair a late-night-driving-Kavinsky sound with explosive lyrics, it creates a sonic energy that not only pierces the audience, but swallows them whole. Their music itself begs to be performed in an unconventional way. Maniac lovers should check out the dates and locations for their upcoming tour, because it is something you’ll regret missing. When Stars and Jewels Collide:

Maniac’s Favorite A-list Jewelry Designs BY KATIE BINETTI PHOTOS COURTESY OF EMERALD DUV, JEWELMINT, AND HOUSE OF HARLOW 1960

Besides an amazing pair of shoes, no woman can deny the allure of jewelry. It is no secret jewelry helps enhance one’s own natural beauty, and no one knows this better than ladies who have spent most of their lives playing dress up for the spotlight. All throughout Hollywood, celebrities are pursuing their own business endeavors, and for a few that means their own jewelry lines. Our favorite ones consist of JewelMint by Kate Bosworth and House of Harlow 1960 by Nicole Richie. Both lines possess beautifully crafted pieces without having to sacrifice your entire paycheck.

38

House of Harlow 1960: Nicole Richie was brought up in a stage family, so her life was framed by bright lights, dressing up, and lots of creative energy. In 2008, Richie channeled her own creativity when she collaborated with Mouawad, a renowned jewelry designer, to begin a fabulous jewelry collection. She took her love and knowledge of costuming and transformed it into what is now known as the House of Harlow 1960, where she integrated numerous aspects of her own life. JewelMint: Kate Bosworth caught our attention in 2002 for her kickass role in the film Blue Crush, but in 2010 she stepped away from acting to start her own jewelry line called JewelMint. After teaming up with friend and stylist Cher Coulter, the pair created a very modern jewelry line concept. They have combined creating stylish pieces with a unique business approach where customers subscribe to JewelMint for a low monthly price, and receive a personalized piece of jewelry each month. Since 2010 the company has grown tremendously to where they are now selling candles, shoes, and something called a “Studio Series,” which is a collaboration between topnotch jewelry designers and JewelMint with the aim to provide limited edition pieces that are sold exclusively on JewelMint’s website.

Emerald Duv:

Golden Hills Bracelet $ 25

Kristin Cavallari has come far since her days as a reality TV star, where many of us first came to love her. A decade later, Cavallari has still kept a presence in our lives but in a totally different way. She has found her niche in the fashion industry with super chic shoe designs for Chinese laundry and her very own bohemian-inspired jewelry line with her close friend and co-designer Chelsea Bulte. The name derives from the birthstone of both of their children, the “duv” as an alternate spelling of “dove,” which symbolizes pairs. Emerald Duv is a super affordable jewelry line that incorporates influences of California and their travels around the world. With pieces featuring turquoise, leather, and rope, the line gives an array of options for you to choose from. Their market is targeted for 20 to 40-year-old women, keeping the designs simple with just enough added flair. Channel your inner beach babe with boho-luxe designs on Emerald Duv’s website www.emeraldduv.com. 41

Chintzy, cheap, tacky, the list goes on. These were the adjectives people (typically our moms’ in a variety of passive-aggressive ways) used to describe costume jewelry. Back in the day, that is how big, chunky, fabulous pieces were viewed. These pieces, and anyone wearing them, were viewed as subpar to the dainty, delicate, fine people who wore dainty, delicate, fine jewelry. True, costume jewelry of the 50s and 60s was often made of inexpensive materials, compared to the silver and gold fine jewelry of the day. However, in the immortal words of Bob 42

Dylan, “times they are a-changin’” and costume jewelry is as well. Gone are the days of “gold-like” nickel that would turn your neck green and burn the skin on your finger. Big fashion names such as Oscar de la Renta are getting in on the costume jewelry game and stepping it up a notch by incorporating finer metals, such as gold and sterling silver, to plate the pieces and Swarovski crystals to sparkle them up. Many of the pieces are in rich jewel tones and depict floral designs as well as filigree and celestial themes. Staying in his

fashion vein of elegant, bold lines with a feminine touch, Oscar de la Renta does what any savvy designer should do; make a line of jewelry that will perfectly complement the clothing of your collection. From his resort looks to the runway, there is a piece for any ensemble you choose. But Oscar de la Renta isn’t the only big name in the game. Consider the costume jewelry of the badass starlets of today: Mawi. Worn by the likes of Florence Welch (from Florence and the Machine) and Rihanna, these pieces are feminine, lots of sparkle and shine, with architectural edge. Along similar lines is Dannijo, a line that also possesses killer pieces that are epically glam but with a bite. Swarovski crystals are everywhere on these pieces, which pair nicely with the spiky elements and oxidized silver they use to plate them. The oxidization process gives the pieces a darker, grungier look that is well-suited to a t-shirt and jeans, rather than an evening gown. And that is the biggest, and best difference, about costume jewelry of today—how you are wearing it! If you want to glam up your, “I woke up like dis” vibe, throw on a cotton tee, some denim, and a big chunky necklace around your throat. Presto! Insta-chic with an instant look! For an evening look everyone will lust after, pair a simple ensemble with a killer earring so long that it brushes your shoulders, and finish it all off with an edgy cuff. Oscar de la Renta Black Resin and Russian Gold Filigree Necklace, $775

Gone are the days of dainty and delicate, nowadays bigger is better. Nowadays when it comes to jewelry, bigger (and bolder!) is better, and dainty and delicate is a thing of the past. Sorry moms out there, it’s our turn.

MANIAC feature decided that she would make a few bracelets to sell and raise money for JDRF (at the time it was known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). She had hoped to raise a couple hundred dollars. That was 10 years ago. After a few years of making jewelry as somewhat of a hobby and raising money for JDRF, Rachel and I, along with a family friend, Margie Dubner, decided to grow the business by adding an internet site and expanding our fundraising efforts. MM: Was there anyone else who was a big supporter of Rachel in her journey to establish Rachel’s Cure? LT: Rachel has been surrounded with love and support all of her life. Her T1D diagnosis; however, has made us all more aware of the need to pay attention to our bodies and our nutrition. Her family and medical specialists have inspired her greatly.

RACHEL’S CURE BY DESIGN: Jewelry with a Purpose

BY MIA BENCIVENGA, PHOTOS COURTESY OF RACHEL’S CURE BY DESIGN

Rachel’s Cure by Design (RCBD) is so much more than just a place where you can get fabulous, hand-crafted pieces of jewelry. It’s one young woman’s journey of overcoming a serious illness through her creativity and passion—and helping countless others in the process. Over the past 10 years, Rachel, (though she is only 22!) with the support of her family and amazing team, has created a one-of-a-kind charity. Despite the fact that RCBD was founded only six years ago in 2009, the organization has grown to include more than 30 charity partners. Her mother, Linda Tobin, gave us a great insight into this wonderful Pittsburgh organization. Maniac Magazine: What inspired Rachel’s Cure by Design? How did it begin? Linda Tobin: Rachel was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when she was 12. That was a big diagnosis for Rachel and our family, and it required us all to make many adjustments to our everyday life. At the time, Rachel’s grandmother was taking a beading class, and Rachel went with her to a few classes. She loved what she was learning and

MM: Tell me about the design process for the pieces RCBD sells. LT: Rachel is a great designer with a fabulous eye for fashion and color, and she stays on top of trends. We are constantly introducing new pieces to our collections. We are always adding new beads, gems, metals, and leathers to our inventory. We believe that what truly differentiates us is our attention to quality. We don’t cut corners when it comes to our choice of materials. All pieces are handmade with love in our studio by the RCBD team. MM: What should buyers of Rachel’s jewelry know about the proceeds of the charity? LT: Rachel is so proud to have established RCBD as a social entrepreneurship. From the sale of every piece (with the exception of medical alert jewelry), $10 is donated to the charity of the customer’s choice. We have 38 organizations to choose from so far. You can fundraise individually or with your organization through corporate or family teams. If customers do not select a charity, the default is JDRF. MM: What’s next for Rachel? LT: Rachel started out 10 years ago wanting to raise a couple hundred dollars for JDRF, and she has raised more than $80,000 for JDRF and other causes, too. Her immediate goal is to reach $100,000, and we’re confident that we’ll do it soon. This has been a big year for Rachel. This fall, she started medical school. Her commitment to helping others extends beyond RCBD and is now her life’s mission. If you want to shop for a beautiful piece, and support your favorite charity, visit www.rachelscbd.com 49

INTERNATIONAL TREASURE One Gem’s Rise to the Top BY INDIGO BALOCH PHOTOS COURTESY OF GEMOLOGUE

GEMOLOGUE, the brainchild of London-based and New York City-educated gemologist Urla, is an award-winning, multi-cultural, fashion, and jewelry blog. Since its inception in 2009, the blog has become rapidly successful, and has garnered a worldwide following. In April 2015 it won Best Blog in Fashion Category at the UK Blog Awards. The reason? Urla is a woman with raw, limitless talent and style. At this time Urla has collaborated with over a hundred jewelry brands, travelled to numerous countries, and has lived in Russia, Austria, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In

addition to GEMOLOGUE, she has translated her love for travel and watches into another blog she co-founded, entitled WATCH THE SPACE. Her talent has also been utilized by high-end print publications, as she is also the ongoing Jewelry Contributor for Vogue Ukraine. Adding yet another great accomplishment to Urla’s already extensive list is GEMOLOGUE’s collaboration with Chanel Fine Jewelry, where the two put together an editorial shoot at the neo-Palladian villa known as the Chiswick house. Built in 1729, the Chiswick house is a popular venue for art showings, events, and is frequented by tourists. However, Chanel closed off the Chiswick House to the public for an entire day so that GEMOLOGUE could shoot the jewelry in private. And still, Urla’s star continues to rise to bigger and greater heights. In anticipation of last year’s British Academy of Film and Television awards, GEMOLOGUE collaborated with YOKO, London, the official jeweler of the BAFTAs. On GEMOLOGUE’s website, you can see Urla picking out and trying on jewels that BAFTA nominees and celebrities wore to one of the biggest awards shows of the year. Urla and GEMOLOGUE’s expertise was even sought out by print giant Harper’s Bazaar; asking GEMOLOGUE to select, style, and photograph antique jewelry for their coverage of the LAPADA Art and Antiques fair. Urla found her voice through GEMOLOGUE; a blog that creates a dialogue about gems. Through GEMOLOGUE she is able to showcase and style fine, costume, and antique jewelry, discuss her many world travels, and showcase exclusive interviews with other jewelers and rare jewelry reviews. If you want in on the glamourous world of GEMOLOGUE, you can visit gemologue.com.

tiny, disparate pieces to be combined into a greater whole. What is jewelry but raw stones and metals forged together into something new, just like letters form words and sentences to become a novel? Diamonds in the Library: Where Words Meet Your Wardrobe BY INDIGO BALOCH, PHOTOS COURTESY OF DIAMONDS IN THE LIBRARY

Becky Stone understands that women have many facets; and those facets reflect different passions and interests. She has always had a deep love for the written word, and is equally enthralled by intricacies and skills that it takes to craft jewelry. She combined her previous career as a professional editor and writer with her passion for all that glistens to create the one-of-a-kind blog, Diamonds in the Library. Maniac Magazine: What inspired you to start a blog with two very different topics—books and jewelry? Becky Stone: I think jewelry and books actually have a lot in common. They’re both triumphs of human artistry and creativity; ultimate examples of potential in 52

MM: You’re working on distance education classes with the GIA (Gemological Institution of America). What inspired you to do that? How’s that going? BS: The inspiration for that is the fact that the more I learn about jewelry, the more I feel like there is more left to learn. I’ve picked up a lot along the way, but I wanted to go back to basics and make sure I really have my facts straight. As for how it’s going: I had to put my GIA classes on hold for a while. For the first half of 2015, I was working a full-time job, writing for my blog and for Book Riot, and planning a wedding. I had to take a break. Now that I’ve quit my day job to blog full time, I finally have space in my life again to dive back into my GIA education. MM: What’s unique about your blog? BS: One of the points I’d most like to make with my blog is that the love of jewelry and love of books are for everyone. It doesn’t matter how much bling you can afford or what you like to read, as long as the passion is there. I love young adult fantasy and I’ll probably never own anything by Cartier; that doesn’t make me any less of a serious reader or jewelry-lover. WENDY BRANDES:

THE 18-KARAT GOLD JOURNALIST BY INDIGO BALOCH, PHOTOS BY SHANE LAVANCHER AND ED PARRINELLO/SQUAREMOOSE

Wendy Brandes has turned her English Degree from Columbia University into a career that spans from being a writer and editor to becoming a renowned jewelry designer and stylist, with her blog keeping the public abreast of every amazing accomplishment. She claims her jewelry lines are inspired by powerful women, but we here at Maniac think that this 2012 winner of the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award for fine jewelry is an inspiration to all of us. Maniac Magazine: You used to do entirely different work from jewelry design. After working for companies like People, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal, what made you switch to jewelry design? Wendy Brandes: It probably wouldn’t have happened if there hadn’t been a step in between. I left People magazine in 2000, and from 2000 to 2005, I was the managing editor of e-Commerce at Lehman Brothers, the investment bank. My original plan was to save money from that job and go back into journalism, but, after a while, going backwards seemed boring. I had started designing a few pieces of jewelry, starting with my own engagement and wedding rings in 2001. I kept coming up with more jewelry designs, so I decided to follow my inspiration into a new field. MM: How would you describe the style of jewelry you design? Where do you draw inspiration from? WB: I have a few different lines. The one that is closest to my heart is my 18K gold line, inspired by antique jewelry and powerful women, especially queens. Those pieces are elaborate and full of secret details. My Maneater series of rings, for instance, feature a jeweled animal on top of the ring and a tiny, defeated man hidden inside the band. Meanwhile, my WENDYB by Wendy Brandes silver diffusion line is influenced by modernity. It’s full of emojis and funny words/acronyms. More recently, I started a Punk Platinum line, because I like the idea of using platinum in a casual, unexpected way. Customers come to me when they want a design that makes them feel powerful. MM: Where is your jewelry available? WB: I’m happy to say it’s exclusively available at wendybrandes.com right now. I have found that no one sells my jewelry better than I do. However, I do hope to do some collaborations with certain, very special retailers in the near future. It’s a hard feat keeping up with Wendy Brandes, so in addition to checking out her blog, wendybrandes.com/blog, be sure to follow her on twitter @WendyBrandes. 53

COLLECTING WRISTWATCHES THROUGH TIME BY THOMAS MCGOVERN PHOTOS COURTESY THOMAS MCGOVERN

It’s hard to pinpoint where my love for wristwatches first manifested. I remember when I was a kid, I was given a Digital Casio on a rubber strap. Back then, Casio made rubber watchbands with a circular insert for a compass attachment that was sold separately. The compass insert was no larger than a dime then, and I lost more than a few of them, but with its luminescent green cardinal points and white half-points, it had this sort of militaristic functionality that would inspire any curious youngster toward adventure. I would strap on my watch, find true North—just for the sake of eyeing something—and run out into the forest to poke around at the unknown. Almost a decade and a half later, I was considerably more involved in the world of wristwatches. I found myself studying the mechanical complications and astronomical applications for watches. I would anticipate releases of new models from the most revered brands, all while slowly building up a modest collection of my own. Appreciation for horology (from the Latin term for the study of time) comes in many forms, the most obvious being, of course, watch collecting. Currently, collectors are finding that watches with historical significance are fetching the highest prices at auction in history. Take for instance the Henry Graves, Jr. Supercomplication pocket watch manufactured by Patek Philippe & Co, which has taken on a legend all its own. First commissioned in 1925, the watch took 5 years to engineer and 3 years to assemble. Made of 920 individual parts with over 400 screws and 100 wheels, with a calendar accurate to the year 2100, the Graves Supercomplication is still considered the most complex watch ever made by any watchmaker without the aid of computer technology. The watch remained in the hands of family members, and eventually a Museum until 1999, when it was sold for over $11 million. It was later revealed that the buyer was a member of the Qatari royal family. Fifteen years later the Supercomplication was back on the auction block. In November of 2014, the hammer fell in Geneva to an anonymous bidder via proxy for just under $24 million. By comparison, 15 years ago, the venerable Rolex Submariner, which many collectors will tell you was their very first step into the world of highend watch collecting, commanded a respectable retail price of $3,575.00. Today the modern interpretation of the same watch will set you back

$8,550.00. For those keeping track, that’s a year over year price increase of almost 140%. Granted, the design of the watch has changed slightly, and marketing and advertising for the brand has evolved, but this is a meteoric rise in price and value through a recession and a technology explosion. Watch collecting, in addition to its historical significance, can garner the smart seller a lot of money. Although in the last 18 months high-end watch sales at the retail level have seen a sort of plateau, watch collectors are not phased by this trend. We continue to see growth on the secondary market year over year, in spite of technological advances, atomic clocks on smart phones, and the advent of smart watches. A study by Endeavor partners showed onethird of Smartwatch buyers tire of their purchase quickly, and stop wearing it altogether after just 6 months. In the tiny world of limited-release modern timepieces and hard-tofind vintage pieces, collecting is an art of its own, requiring knowledge, passion, and perhaps most importantly, time. 57

POROS ESTIATORIO: The Greek Island Comes to Pittsburgh BY MIA BENCIVENGA, PHOTOS BY JIM KORTE

Pittsburgh’s Market Square is quickly becoming the best place in the city to be, thanks in large part to Big Y Restaurant Group. They’re the talent behind some of the most beautiful restaurants and haunts in the city, such as Seviche, Sonoma, Nola on the Square, and my personal favorite, Perle. Poros, an Aegean Estiatorio located in the heart of Market Square, will be the crowning jewel of the Big Y Restaurants, and we think it’ll resemble something of an aquamarine.

60

Poros aims to make you feel as though you’re in the Mediterranean, with its many shades of blue, soft, sweeping architecture; creating an all-around airy, and romantic, atmosphere. The biggest contributing factor aside from, of course, the gorgeous, ocean inspired décor, is the fact that Poros has the largest outdoor patio dining in all of the city, allowing you to make the most of clear nights and a hot cappuccino after a big meal.

The focal point to this restaurant, is, as it should be, the food they serve. Keeping with their oceanic feel, they have plenty of dynamic and fresh seafood entrées. You can either choose from a large variety of boneless filets, shellfish, and whole fish options prepared to your liking, or order smaller plates. They have classic dishes such as Grilled Calamari with faro, spinach, red peppers, and onion (a favorite amongst my Italian family) and twists on staples such as the ouzo-cured salmon, made all the more delicious with dill, shaved fennel salad, and tzatziki. In short, seafood lovers will rejoice. However, carnivores and vegans alike can find a happy place in Poros. You can order grilled Colorado lamb chops, served with lentils, sundried tomatoes, and figs, or stuffed piquillo peppers with wheat berries, garlic fava bean mash and parsley sauce. They also accommodate those with gluten intolerance—in short, even eaters with the toughest dietary restrictions can dine happily at Poros. Even if you just want to stop by the bar for a glass of wine, they have an impressively large drink menu that of course, focuses on the flavors of the Aegean. From Prosecco, to rosé from Lebanon, you can tour the world just by taking a seat and enjoying the great flavors. And for dessert, there’s loukoumades donuts, topped with honey syrup and pistachios, among other delightful treats. In short, if you’re looking for a sumptuous meal filled with exotic twists on your favorites situated in a dreamy atmosphere, be sure to check out this brand-new Pittsburgh gem. The Ultimate Push WRITTEN BY NICOLE WIDDOWSON

The only thing I have ever “pushed” in my life was my boss for a salary increase and an indecisive shopper at the sale rack at Nordstrom. While we all have experienced different variations of a push, every second of every day, someone, somewhere is experiencing the ultimate push, bringing a brand new life into this great big world. From the shock and excitement of a positive pregnancy test, to the first time you hear the word “momma,” becoming a parent is a remarkable journey that is arguably a gift in itself. While some insist that their child is the best present they could ever hope to receive, some women believe that the occasion calls for something more. Over the last few years, “Push Presents” have been a way to reward the mother of your child for enduring the pain of labor, as well as the inevitable sleepless nights that are yet to come. The controversial gifts can range from a fully loaded Mercedes Benz, to a shiny-littlesomething in that famous blue box. Love them or hate them, we are truly a motherhood divided. “I feel that my Push Present came from deep within the heart of 62

my husband,” said Jana Randall, mother of four, who has received a push present. “I hadn’t even given thought to receiving one, but he had been designing the most creative, amorous and intricate ring as a token of his appreciation for giving him a family. My family ring is a diamond eternity band comprised of multiple diamonds, six being round. We remove a round stone and replace it with the birthstone of every child that is born.

“No present has ever, nor can ever be, as special. It is truly endearing!” While women will continue to have strong opinions on the subject, Push Presents mean different things to different people. Some believe that it is a method of showing deep appreciation; an expression of love and unwavering devotion. Others feel that it is unnecessary spending and splurging, fulfilling an extravagant need. To me, I think the best gift I could ever receive after giving birth would be fitting in to my skinny jeans again. I think we all can agree to disagree.

battles over their kids ensued, and things that were once symbols of love could no longer be tolerated to look at. When Laura went to have her engagement ring and wedding band appraised, she received quite a shock—“The jeweler told me that my simple gold wedding band was worth ten times more than the “diamond” itself, which apparently, wasn’t a diamond at all.”

Whether you like it or not, the engagement ring is, in theory, a symbol of your fiancé’s love for you, and devotion to your relationship. The importance of an engagement ring, and all it entails, has been reinforced time and time again through film, television, and those never-ending commercials that always seem to play the most when you’ve just gone through a break-up. That’s why a lot of emphasis is put on the size of the ring—the bigger the rock, the bigger the love—or so that’s what a lot of people would like you to believe. And if the rock itself is a fake? Well, then the love is, too. Or so it would seem. Though it’s often kept very hush-hush, we know more people who have received—and given—fake rings than we realize. If you assume people give fake rings only because they lack the funds, you are sadly mistaken. In my search for information, most of the women I talked to had husbands who were supposedly wealthy and successful... but apparently not terribly generous or honest. I grew up in a small town, filled with lots of white picket fences and lush homes and wives adorned with whopping rings that glistened next to their Pandora bracelets. But as we all know, things are rarely as perfect as they appear. I went to grade school with the children of a couple who were getting a divorce after a decades-long marriage. The wife, let’s call her, “Laura,” had walked in on her husband cheating (sadly, one of her children was with her) and left him, kids in tow. Naturally, in the ugly process of divorce, homes were sold, custody

The scary thing is, she had this ring for years and years, and she never suspected it was fake. How could this happen? There are some high-quality fakes out there, for a tenth or a twentieth of what its real counterpart would be. Many fake rings are made with good materials, which are so close to their real counterparts that the untrained eye can’t tell the difference. One google search in, and I found an 18-karat gold plated ring with a massive marquis cut champagne-colored cubic zirconia ring for a whopping $25. Normally it would be $50, but that day it was on sale and I had a coupon. I may or may not have bought it. Fake rings certainly have their merits—I know a lot of girls who have rings that aren’t 100% authentic. Many women would rather get a convincing and high-quality fake and still have money for a down payment on a car or a house than a giant ring they can’t wear outside of the house without being in mortal fear. I say, if you and your fiancé know your limits, and want to get a great big, fun ring without doling out the dough, there’s no shame in that at all. If you’re anxious about your engagement ring, play it safe and get it appraised and insured. It’s a good idea for everyone involved, just in case it ever gets lost or stolen. Or, if you want to make sure you get exactly what you want, you and your fiancé can go ring shopping together. But if you find yourself with a fake ring, then you have a fake fiancé, too. And whereas one might have some value, the other most certainly does not. 65

SUNFLOWER POWER:

Celebrating 25 Years of WOMEN AND ART BY MIA BENCIVENGA, PHOTOS BY CODY NICOLE WIEGAND

September 30th was a chilly, gray day, but anyone on their way to Sunflower POWER was in for a rush of color that evening. Beginning at 5:30 pm, people squeezed their way into the bustling PerLora. Although it is always a marvelous space, with its high ceilings filled with two levels of gorgeous furniture and modern designs, it was even more so during the event. Paint was flying—courtesy of honorary chair Baron Batch, who was live painting, you guessed it, a chair—cupcakes and other delectable foods (courtesy of Bella Christie, Lil’Z’s Sweet Boutique, and Square Café) were munched, and beautiful artwork was taken in. Models, styled by Izzazu Salon, were painted with bright colors, and showed auction items including custom-painted shoes and suitcases. DJ Kelli Burns and host Brenda Waters kept things moving along with their music and snappy narration. The theme to this year’s annual Sunflower POWER Event was “Art Outside the Box,” and for good reason. There was a silent auction as patrons tried to out-bid each other for these unique, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, crafted and donated by local artists. “Break In Case of Fabulous” read one glass box, with its insides filled with a great amount of rainbow glitter, and an even better message. Each artist that contributed a box to the event was inspired by the resiliency of women. The POWER organization itself was celebrating 25 years of helping women “...reclaim their lives from the disease of addiction to alcohol and other drugs, and to reduce the incidence of addiction in future generations.” It’s a cause that deserves our support. Thanks to chairs Sheree Goldstein and Mary Prezioso, and the artists, businesses, and patrons that donated their money and time to the event, the POWER organization will continue to aid women for a very long time. GRAND MARIGOLD GALA: “INDIA IN FOCUS” BY MIA BENCIVENGA, PHOTOS BY JASON COHN

The Benedum Center stage sees hundreds of performances throughout the year, but none quite like what occurred at the Grand Marigold Gala, hosted by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Though there was a torrential downpour, guests arrived under shield of umbrellas, excited to attend the event which was all about embracing Indian culture. The September 19th evening began on stage and concluded there, with 430 guests enjoying a cocktail hour and later a jubilant dance party. However, there was plenty going on in between. After the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed the gorgeous view of the Benedum auditorium as they sipped and snacked—they departed from the stage, illuminated by a gigantic marigold—for a show they wouldn’t soon forget. From dancer Jin Won, teaching everyone to count in Hindi as she danced a set with incredibly intricate footwork, to the University of Pittsburgh Nrityamala Dance Troupe wowing us with their Bollywood-style routine, the evening seemed to reach a peak. Until we were called to dinner! With gorgeous, glittering table settings, and red and gold fabrics cascading as far as the eye could see (orchestrated by Nancy Byrnes), and a delicious meal by the Duquesne Club, the dinner was ended with the pounding of drums, calling everyone back onstage for coffee, dessert, and a performance by the amazing Bhangra Dance Party featuring Carnegie Mellon University’s Bhangra Dance Troupe and Falu. It was a spectacular evening, filled with saris, color, and joy. Want more evenings like this? Support Pittsburgh’s amazing art scene! Please visit www.trustarts.org

THRIVAL INNOVATION & MUSIC FESTIVAL PITTSBURGH’S 21ST CENTURY COACHELLA WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SARAH LOLLEY

Contrasting with the night sky, gigantic cold warehouse walls danced with vibrant electric hues and laser beams at the Thrival Innovation and Music Festival. Set amidst the remains of an old coke plant in Hazelwood, Thrival organizers utilized the acreage to set up art and technology demonstrations during the two days of live music. The ecstatic pop music of Panic! at the Disco, was the headliner this year, but there was nearly something for everyone in the lineup. Andrew McMahon lifted spirits with piano-infused pop anthems against a chemically color-charged sunset. And then D.C. hip-hop star Wale welcomed the night with crescendo prose that hung fast in the air as the crowd raised their hands. On Saturday, fresh-faced talent like Kevin Garrett, one of Pittsburgh’s own, sang to the sunset as the progressive orchestrations of San Fermin welcomed the moon. Tweens screamed their hearts out with the Canadian muse of Lights until the chanting of Wu-Tang coaxed Raekwon and Ghostface Killah out and into the crowd to greet their faithful fans. The night ended with the indie-rock band Manchester Orchestra, creating a metallic melody that echoed against the spirit of the surrounding industrial graveyard. “We want Pittsburgh to be the best Pittsburgh,” commented Thrill Mill CEO Bobby Zappala during a series of PittTalks hosted in Google’s Bakery Square headquarters. Zappala is amongst his company’s supporters that recognizes the area’s talent and its need of resources. “Organic marketing is leading the next charge by building something that isn’t just corporate marketing.” One way Thrill Mill accomplishes this was to make the ticket prices for the concert affordable ($25-$45) despite the costs of the talent and dual stage production. They invested in the life of the festival, subsequently boosting the attendance to 9000 over two days, by engaging the community and utilizing their resources. Even the catering for the event came from a local Hazelwood provider. The festival is a truly out-of-the-box event. What began as a weeklong schedule of innovative talk and pitch events—something you would expect in Silicon Valley rather than Allegheny County—is also simultaneously attempting to be Pittsburgh’s Coachella. In the end, Thrival has its own identity of a cultural phenome that encompasses the genius and ingenuity of the region, as well as a good time. www.thrivalfestival.com 70

EVAN ROSS AND THE WICKED CITY BY STACY SKIAVO PHOTOS COUTESY OF EVAN ROSS

72

Even as a child, Evan Ross had a passion for performing, spending countless hours putting on shows for his family. No doubt he was inspired by watching his mother, lead singer of the Supremes, Diana Ross, on stage and on the big screen. It has been a passion he pursued into adulthood. Ross got his first big break when he was cast as Ant in the 2006 American drama film, ATL, a coming-of-age story set in Atlanta. He starred alongside Mykelti Williamson, who became Ross’ mentor on the project, and music industry heavyweights T.I. and Antwan Andre Patton, aka Big Boi of OutKast. He is also developing a music career. Just this past May, he released the single (featuring old friend and rapper T.I.) entitled “How to Live

session complete with new prosthetics, tattoos, and piercings. “It was a process,” laughed Ross. But admits the makeup makes Messalla come alive. “He’s a mystical character.” Filming was, in his words, “One of the most incredible experiences of my life. The people involved became my family.” Most of the sets are physically created and little is done in front of a green screen. The film was shot in select cities around the world, from Atlanta to Paris. But no matter where they were, there were fans waiting, hoping for a glimpse of the cast. “It’s so captivating... larger than life, really.” The same could be said for Evan Ross, and his burgeoning career. May the odds be ever in his favor.

Alone.” Ross’ alone time, however, has just been steeply cut down, as he and wife Ashlee Simpson have recently welcomed daughter Jagger Snow into the world. “Fatherhood is great!” Ross told me happily. As for the unique name? “We didn’t want something too girly!” As if being a new father isn’t enough to keep him busy, Ross has been occupied with his new show Wicked City which premiered on October 27th on ABC. Ross plays Diver Hawkes, the owner of a small L.A. paparazzi agency that focuses on gruesome murder scene photography. Ross wasn’t sold on the idea initially. “When I heard about the role, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do TV. It would have to be the right project and this was,” Ross elaborated. He was also excited to work alongside fellow actor Jeremy Sistso. Jeremy’s character, Jack Roth, is an LAPD detective who is investigating a mysterious murder and decapitation in the city. “It’s all an amazing process. I love the 1980s, the fashion, the smoke and mirrors. People don’t realize the amount of serial killer murders that occurred during that time period.” Diver Hawkes has been a new type of character to tackle for Ross, but with some pre-shooting preparation, he captured the character. “Playing with the character has been so much fun; he has a lot of dimensions to him. He’s a paparazzo who is trying to capture the reality of death and murder during that time period.” If you’re wondering why Evan Ross looks so familiar, it might be because he’s involved in one of the biggest and most successful movie franchises of all time, The Hunger Games.

He plays the character Messalla, the propaganda photographer of the Airtime Assault. You saw him in Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, and he’ll back on the big screen for Part 2 this November. The movie was shot over a course of ten months. In addition to spending a lot of time on set, Ross endured a two-hour makeup 73

ASHLEY MADISON:

The Fantasy Effect BY CHRYS PERKINS, PHOTOS BY EMILY LAMBERT

The AshleyMadison.com “scandal” is one of the most hurtful, relationship-damaging events to have ever occurred. Those behind the incident should be ashamed of themselves. The “scandal” isn’t about cheating; it’s about people illegally obtaining information with malicious intent. This is one of many sites that exist to have access to a fantasy escape. The hackers have conquered public humiliation, but have they stopped people from cheating or engaging in these escapes? No. In my opinion, their actions were distasteful and they only informed cheaters about the additional precautions needed to keep their secrets hidden. So instead of using this forum to open up non-judgmental conversation about what compels a person to cheat, it was used to condemn and destroy. Cheaters shouldn’t be bashed. There should certainly be consequences, but those personally involved in the relationships affected should delegate them. It is not up to a person or group of people to meddle with people’s private lives. The hackers are not heroes; they are villains who destroyed lives by committing a crime. I mean, honestly, is going on AshleyMadison.com really cheating? A majority of the users never met up and allegedly most of the female profiles were fake. So again, it is merely an escape into fantasy. Many people, men and women, masturbate to pornography. What’s the difference between using pornography and using a site like AshleyMadison.com? It is all virtual fantasy. I condone using pornography for a fantasy escape, as long as it’s not an addiction. Therefore the issue isn’t how many profiles were real or fake, nor how much money people paid to use the website, nor how many were men or women. The issue is it that cheating still happens today. Will it ever completely go away? It most likely won’t since temptation will always be there and people, like the hackers, will always exist. 74

If the hackers used their skills to raise awareness about infidelity instead of negatively shaming it then we would be making progress on the subject. It is more helpful to positively discuss what can be done about this issue or how couples can work on sharing their feelings. Fantasy escapes reveal why the infidelity occurred or is occurring. Furthermore, if conversations transpired before cheating is considered or happens there would be an opportunity to stop it. But why do people chase fantasy or find sexual pleasure outside of their partnerships? Bad relationships, need for attention, desiring riskiness, anger, loneliness, stress, desiring sexual exploration, implementing fetishes, quantity of sex, etc. The reasons are endless. So if the hackers wanted to discuss cheating, they should know that the danger in cheating is not the action itself, but rather why it happened. They play just as much of a negative role in their own relationships as the accused cheaters. They certainly didn’t give relationships hope in solving this matter. If people communicated their unhappiness or dissatisfaction before they were buried under the rug, there would be less cheating. The act of cheating may never cease, but each individual has a choice. Despite the hacker’s cruel message, there is hope for personal growth if one wants to grow. Chrys Perkins has been the go-to person for relationship advice for years. She is finishing her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy at Northcentral University. What fascinates her most about relationships is how and why humans connect with one another. Her best piece of advice: “Communication is everything!”
