My mom asked me to introduce this issue. I’m not sure what she means. Her version of an introduction and mine are very different. I am a dog. I wonder if it’s time for another walk yet? It feels like it is. I’ve already been outside once and I’ve had my breakfast. It feels like its time for a walk, but I can’t tell if my mom is ready. She’s still working on the computer and talking to her boss on the phone about the magazine. This is “The Dog Issue,” she says. She talks to me all day long. I am so glad she works from home a lot. I’d be so lonely if she didn’t. She tells me she’d be so lonely without me and I know that is true. Maria Menounos is the cover girl for this issue. “Maria is the host of EXTRA, an entertainment news show,” she told me. She also said that Maria has adopted four dogs from shelters or rescue organizations. That makes me happy because so many dogs need forever homes like I have. The Humane Society of the United States aids in finding forever homes for animals all over the country. HSUS just hosted a contest called, “Cool vs. Cruel” for which contestants had to improve on a designer’s garment by making it fur-free! Animal Friends, a Pittsburgh-based organization just hosted Black Tie and Tails that raised funds for homeless animals and humane programming. I’ve never been to a fancy event like that, but I think it would be fun. I would definitely pose for a photo with my best friend, Scout. I love having my photo taken. One of my dreams is to model for Joanna Totolici, a fashion photographer who also takes beautiful dog photos. I’d be perfect. I have a beautiful blonde coat and a big box head. That’s what my mom tells me and I know that is true. The mailman should be here soon. I should probably watch for him, it’s one of my jobs. Jobs make dogs feel special and needed. There is a dog, Edie, who works at the Fairmont Pittsburgh as the official canine ambassador. She must feel very special. I like hotels that allow dogs to stay. Maybe one day my parents will take me to Los Angeles. We could stay at the Avalon Hotel. I don’t know where Los Angeles is but I’ve heard its very sunny and I’m sure I could swim all year round. Another sunny destination is Thailand. I overheard a conversation my parents had with their friends, Henry and Lisa, who traveled there recently. I love to travel, but there are also wonderful things for dogs to do and places to visit right around Pittsburgh. The crème de la crème landed spots in the MANIAC Mutt Guide 2011. It’s definitely time for my walk now. My mom was listening to a song by Matt Nathanson but she just turned the volume down and is now looking for her shoes. Walks with my parents are one of my favorite things in life. I am so lucky to have people that love me and other dogs to play with. I remind myself of this every night when I begin to dream. Each night I curl up with my parents and they tell me they love me. “You’re my best friend,” my mom tells me, and I know that is true. Sincerely,

Winter Wonderful Skin

When choosing a MANIAC cover model, we look for several things: current relevance in the industry, a certain amount of sex appeal, an obvious amount of talent, and perhaps (especially in this case) being a dog lover doesn’t hurt. Hungry for the perfect fit, we contacted every major entertainment publicist and quickly received a response that intrigued us. “I have Maria Menounos,” the A-list Hollywood publicist e-mailed us, “she has four adopted dogs and loads of projects to talk about.” “Brilliant, why hadn’t we thought of her before,” we responded with sarcasm. We had [thought of her] back in August for a previous issue, but scheduling conf licts intervened. We found ourselves, once again, in hot pursuit of Maria Menounos.

UNDERCOVER

enounos, the GreekAmerican actress, producer, journalist, and television presenter, is best known for her appearances as a correspondent for TODAY, Access Hollywood and as the newest co-host of Extra with Mario Lopez. For those of you that recognize her from somewhere else, perhaps you recall her from high school as one of the first correspondents for Channel One; “the hot reporter” that all the guys in your class were crushing on. It’s no surprise that it was nearly impossible to confirm a photo shoot or schedule an interview with Menounos since we first considered her over the summer. Her demanding schedule – and a very savvy team of publicists who apologetically cancelled her first photo shoot with us in Los Angeles – didn’t allow for much time to be interviewed and photographed (frustrating for a media outlet like ours and ironically just the sort of thing Menounos probably deals with herself on a daily basis at Extra). We finally found ourselves in L.A. on November 14, preparing for the 35 minutes we had been allotted by Menounos’s PR team. Hair, make-up, camera crew, and assistants were all in picture perfect place standing ready for the red carpet host’s arrival. Forty outfits were steamed and pressed, with perfectly paired crystal-bottomed shoes. Then, the call came, “Maria has to attend the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part I premiere at five o’clock,” warned her publicist. We’d changed studios a couple of times to get as close as we could to the NOKIA Film Theatre where she was set to interview the stars of the mega-hit tween film. It was 45 minutes past the call time and then the second blow came via publicist: Maria would be arriving without her four dogs (for our dog issue) that were promised, then pulled, from the shoot at the last moment due to, once again, Menounos’s tight schedule. We needed a MANIAC miracle, especially because it was pushing 3:30 and Menounos had not yet arrived. As Menounos entered the room sporting the perfect Hollywood faux glow, she was speaking apologetically about her lateness and lack of dogs. We pulled a Cavalli dress off the rack and handed it to her; she reminded us we only have 30 minutes to shoot; we reminded her to hurry up and get the dress on. “No bra or bra?” Maria screeched form the dressing room, “I better do a bra!” Walking onto the set, the chaos quiets and she looked picture-perfect. Lights, Camera, Action; the shoot began. Five fabulous – yet dogless –frames click past, when a German Shepherd Dog puppy barreled through the set. Shaggy and tail wagging, he knocked over a light, but amidst the panting and slobbering Maria’s eyes lit up. Did the MANIAC gods deliver this dog or was just a neighbor’s dog well past his back yard boundaries? We will never know. We do know, however, that he was the perfect culmination of an arduous journey to feature America’s “Every Girl,” who literally “wrote the book” on being successful in even the stickiest of situations (more on that later). *** 14

UNDERCOVER You’d never guess — judging from the prominent place that her four dogs have in her life — that Menounos is terribly allergic to them. For 12 years she has put up with miserable symptoms such as hives and asthma because she adores them.

however — as a puppy mill-breeding female, she had a bleak future before being rescued by Mama Menounos. Benjamin and Baby take care of their Mom just as much as she takes care of them. “If I’m ever sick, Benjamin and Baby always know,” Maria says. They come in and lay on top of her, providing a great deal of comfort. It’s the kind of

Menounos says she is “better at being a goof ball” than being provocative... “They’re a gift from God,” she says, noting both the role they play in her life and how they came to be in it in the first place. Long an advocate of pet adoption and the plight of rescue dogs, Menounos has dedicated a great deal of time and energy to raising awareness about choosing a pet responsibly and with compassion. She has earned numerous awards from animal welfare agencies for her efforts on behalf of animal charities and for her investigative reports bringing to light the dreadful conditions in puppy mills. Menounos is “Mom” to four lucky pooches: Apollo, a white German Shepherd, Athena, a Poodle, and Benjamin and Baby, both Bichon Frises. Although she adopted them, she claims the real story is that they found her. These are not the dogs she imagined she would own, growing up. “I never wanted poodles or furry dogs,” she says. Instead she dreamed of having big, tough-looking breeds, like Rottweilers or Pitbulls. But these fluffy four have found a permanent spot in her heart. Apollo — so named because he is “regal and beautiful, like a Greek God” — take charge. On one occasion, he heard a splash and came to the rescue of the two Bichons, who had fallen into the pool, fishing them out by their necks. He and Menounos’s paths crossed when he was ejected from a moving vehicle outside a dog shelter where she was filming. Athena, also boasting a name that speaks to Menounos’ heritage, knows her place is as the “princess.” She certainly looks the part with her traditional grooming and ornate collars and accessories by Poetic Paws- a Menounos favorite. She didn’t always enjoy such pampering 16

“unconditional love” that makes being a dog owner so rewarding. Menounos is possibly the hardest working woman in show business, with on-air roles for two TV shows — Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers, and as co-host, with Mario Lopez, of Extra — as well as venturing into some pretty diverse areas of life in a new project, Moonlighting with Maria. While Menounos has built a high-profile career in front of the camera, she has also achieved a lot of success behind it, directing and producing for documentaries and independent films, often in partnership with her long-term real-life partner, Kevin Undergaro. The result is that Menounos travels a lot. Not wanting to be away from her dogs for too long, she does occasionally bring them with her. While spending a month in Connecticut shooting her short film, Serial Buddies, she had a friend accompany Apollo out on the long flight from LA, something he wasn’t too keen on — “he cried the whole way,” she laments. The smaller dogs are far better travelers, and all of them pay visits to her on-set trailer, where she insists they are well behaved. Still, she doesn’t like them to spend too much time away from their “comfort zone.” There is no doubt that Menounos’s canine family receive a great deal of affection, but it is the planning for a human family that has put Menounos in the spotlight lately. Having worked with a steadfast and breathtaking dedication on her career goals since she was young, she realized that the proverbial biological clock was ticking away, and at 33, she wasn’t getting any younger. She made the decision to harvest and freeze some of her own eggs so that should the need

arise, she could conceive at a later date through IVF. It’s a bold and very personal decision she shared publically because it’s an issue about which she feels strongly. “Women need to be talking about it to other women,” she says, and sharing information so that this kind of opportunity can be utilized by more of them. It’s this kind of serious topic that makes Menounos one of the most versatile of journalists — she is as adept at reporting on health issues like diabetes (as she did on a recent “Mentourage” special), military operations or being the first to interview the Obamas, as she is doing red carpet duty and hosting awards shows. When you find her interviewing seasoned broadcast luminaries like Katie Couric, you can see that she’s following in their well-placed footsteps. In her bestselling book EveryGirl’s Guide to Life, published in April, Menounos shares tips of the trade and personal advice that reads like a How-To for achieving success — professionally and otherwise — with class. As a public figure whose every move is documented on the Internet (for better or worse), she understands that it’s a potentially dangerous medium for a generation that have never known anything else. Her advice? Remember that what goes on the Internet “lives forever,” so “act like you’re running for President” before you post anything. Say, “I’ll get back to you on that,” is another bit of sage advice she delivers in a truly useful series of small videos she has made on everything from organizing your closets, to taking care of your car, to working out (they can be found on Bing by searching her name). If she could offer just one hard-earned insight, it would be that “organization is the key to happiness.” Making your life more streamlined and efficient allows you the opportunity to do more with it — and she is certainly her own best example of this approach. Case in point: she recently performed with the Pussycat Dolls in their Las Vegas burlesque show. A famously sporty girl (who supports her Boston hometown teams with gusto), Menounos says she is “better at being a goofball” than being provocative, but that the experience had a rejuvenating effect. A woman’s allure can be beaten out of you by everyday life, she explains, so it’s good to be reminded that there’s another side to be explored. Claiming that learning a few new moves was surprisingly “empowering,” she gushes, “I found my sexy!” Although, those guys from your high school class, along with most of America, would probably argue that she never lost her “sexy” in the first place. first thought it was about other people, but now that I play these songs live, I realize it’s about myself and the way I look at other people,” Nathanson said. “I’m there in all the songs, even if the songs are not my story.” Although the lyrics on Modern Love are influenced by Nathanson’s experiences with love, the futuristic sounds of the tracks are obviously inspired by his guilty pleasure of 80’s records. He credits 80’s greats like David Bowe, Tears for Fears, INXS, The Cure and Echo and The Bunnymen for influencing how he wanted the record to feel, which he hopes sounds like it’s “from Mars.” Nathanson took a year off, the first in over 15 years, to write Modern Love. “It was weird to get my underwear out of my drawer and not out of a suitcase,” joked Nathanson. “It was nice to be able to dedicate real time to creating. Before, it always happened in between experiences.” From the album’s first single “Faster” to the me-and-you-against-the-world mindset in “Bottom of the Sea,” Nathanson’s writing has evolved. He takes more risks than in previous albums, baring his soul and getting down to the essence of what music is all about. “It’s easy to write songs using your brain, it’s difficult to write them using your gut,” Nathanson said. “This is the most free I ever felt on this record.” Nathanson’s music has been described as folk, pop and rock. But for the first time in his career, he joined the ranks of country greats when he performed his latest single “Run” on the Country Music Awards with Sugarland on November 9th. Nathanson showed no signs of preshow jitters, although he admitted to having no idea what to expect. “It’s going to be weird to be dropped into the land of Taylor [Swift] and Brad [Paisley], but I’m psyched,” Nathanson told MANIAC days before the show. “Run,” a sultry duet, was an overnight hit. Although seemingly innocent, “Run,” turns up the heat as Nathanson sings: “I wanna watch you undress, I wanna watch you glow / Let your hair down all around, cover us both / You come in a wave, we crash and we roll / You surround me, pull me, drown me, swallow me whole.”

MUSIC

“I PLAY THESE SONGS LIVE, I REALIZE IT’S ABOUT MYSELF AND THE WAY I LOOK AT PEOPLE...”

To which Jennifer Nettles, in her everpresent country twang, responds, “You pull me in close / You buckle my knees / I shake and I shiver just to feel you breathe.” Although the pairing of the two artists may seem out of the blue, the fusion of sound has been a long time coming. Nathanson’s friendship with Nettles and Kristian Bush started a while back when Sugarland covered his hit single “Come on Get Higher” and added it to their record as a bonus track. “They got in touch with me and said ‘We’re huge fans’ and asked me if I wanted to come out on the road with them,” Nathanson said. “All of the sudden I’m touring with them, then we became real close and hung out, and then we wrote a song. It went like that.” Nathanson wrapped up his All Night Noise tour in Nashville, days before the CMAs. He made a brief stop in our beloved city of Pittsburgh at Diesel on October 2nd. He said he enjoys playing here and tries to make it a destination every time he is touring. Nathanson summed up his feelings towards Pittsburgh in a brief and to-the-point confession, “Pittsburgh is the shit. I love it.” Even with his quick rise to fame, Nathanson stays grounded. He’s funny and witty, charming and passionate. He’s even known for pulling a few pranks.

During August and September, Nathanson was on tour with Train and Maroon 5. During the last show in Houston, Train recruited a local marching band to parade across the stage as Maroon 5 sang “She Will be Loved.” Not to be outdone, Maroon 5 hijacked the video segment of people in love, which is projected onto huge screen while Train performs “Marry Me.” Adam Levine and Nathanson recorded themselves eloping, staring deeply into each other’s eyes and proclaiming their love for one another. And to top it all off, Nathanson was wearing a wedding dress. What can we say, this guy is a MANIAC. Nathanson’s most memorable career moment thus far has been appearing on Howard Stern. He told MANIAC he thinks Stern is an amazing interviewer and still gets giddy when reflecting on his guest spot on the show. “It was surreal. I’m a huge fan and it was the highlight of my life,” Nathanson gushed. “It was wild. It was hard not to freak out a little bit when you walk in and are like Oh my God, you’re Howard Stern.” Nathanson’s larger-than-life personality has MANIAC crushing. And one thing is for sure, whether you’re listening to his new album or watching him perform at a venue or on T.V., Nathanson will definitely make your heart beat a little bit faster.

hotographer Joanna Totolici was eight years old when she picked up her first camera. It was a Polaroid. Fittingly, the inaugural photo she took was of her very first puppy. Years later, Totolici is an esteemed photographer of fashion and dogs, with a true love and a passion for both. “I can’t say that photography is my gift, but it is definitely my calling,” Totolici said. “I guess the realization moment was when modeling friends of mine started using my images in their professional portfolios. It was the best compliment I could imagine. Was it a stroll in the park from that moment on? No. My vision took years to develop and it is seems like it will develop forever.” Her background in is fashion photography. “I spent my whole life with my nose in fashion magazines,” Totolici said. “As a kid I was fascinated with the fashion editorials and I couldn’t help but marvel at the images over and over again. Eventually I started deconstructing them, into model, clothes, accessories, props, makeup, hair, lights and photographer’s vision; and then reconstructing in my imagination, posing them differently or changing some styling.”

As a kid I was fascinated with the fashion editorials and I couldn’t help but marvel at the images over and over again Her artwork oscillates mainly between fashion and portraits. Her photographs focus on two many subjects, the idealized human beauty and the real raw beauty of the dog. Like many other photographers, her first subject was her dog. “His name was Junior and nobody had a clue as to what breeds he was comprised of,” Totolici reflected. “We were told he was Sheepdog, poodle and some short-haired breed mix. To me he was a sweet dog, curly face mix. He looked like a Portuguese Water dog, afraid of water.” Totolici admitted she can never be dog-less. She said she needs a pup around for her mental well-being. A year ago, Totolici rescued the most recent addition to her family from the Bideawee shelter in New York City. Although she wasn’t necessarily looking for a pure breed, she ended up adopting a Havanese. “He looks like

an Ewok that ate a skunk,” Totolici said of her beloved pet. “He was found walking the streets of Beverly Hills (no joke!), but somehow Spielberg failed to notice his talent. He had all but abandoned his dreams of stardom when he encountered us.” Although Hollywood didn’t make this pup an overnight sensation, Totolici gave him his starring role in her family. “His bad boy attitude, combined with his Rod Stewart haircut, was just too fantastic for us to ignore,” she said. “Within minutes he discovered the wonderful joys of biting my husband. A star was born by name of Boris A. Fancypants, and his pants are very fancy indeed.” Totolici, who holds a degree in Political Science, started her career initially as a fashion photographer in 1993. The business evolved and grew, but she later felt she needed a big change. In 2001, she moved to Athens, Greece, with a scholarship in arts for post-graduate studies in photography. She enjoyed the sun and landscape for a few years, but soon started to miss a fast-paced lifestyle. After winning the Surface Magazine Avant Guardian Competition in 2005, she started to receive national recognition for her work. This led to a national ad campaign for popular designer Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, ultimately advancing her career to look-books and in-store photo works for Aerie by American Eagle. The domino effect continued, and took her to New York City. Totolici’s photography is inspired by 23

a variety of elements. “Art-wise, I am inspired by things I have accidentally shot, like mistakes, or I’ll go through images and spot one that brings a theme or concept to mind. I then develop and expand the concept from there,” she said. “Dog-wise, I was inspired by my late dog, Miss Stinky Poops Onassis. She used to walk ever so elegantly in front of the shoots for American Eagle and everyone, from models to art directors, would comment how majestic and photogenic she was,” Totolici said. “That was when I thought of photographing dogs with the exact same approach as my human portraits. Being in New York City is very inspiring and motivating, but time is the highest commodity. I love being submerged in so many different cultures, fantastic street fashion, the energy and ambition. It is a continuous inspiration storm.” As you may imagine, photographing dogs versus people presents different problems and challenges. But Totolici insists human and dog fashion is surprisingly similar. “When I shoot dog fashion catalogs, there is an art director and a stylist ironing/steaming and fitting the clothes on the dog, just like it would be for humans,” she explained. “The dogs 24

are groomed for the shoot, and we have to make sure the hair isn’t covering an important detail. The stance of the body must always be in check and also the facial expressions.” There are two major differences between human and canine models: humans can continue a photoshoot for more than an hour, (sometimes) while dogs look good without needing three hours of makeup. Totolici said developing a system for photographing dogs didn’t happen overnight, but she learned you can teach an old photographer new tricks. “I believe my style of dog photography emerges from my innate love of them,” she said. “Some dogs love posing, others love bouncing off the walls. Unbeknownst to them, I love it any way. I get to play with dogs all day.” Photographing dogs comes as a second instinct to Totolici. She follows the canine model’s actions and keeps a whatever happens, happens frame of mind. “Sometimes I treat the models according to their personalities, which can range from a powerful CEO of a multibillion corporation (that just happens to fart a lot when he gets too many cheese treats) to that of a clown,” she said. “In the end it might sound kooky but I connect with each of them and capture that connection on camera.”

As a photographer, Totolici notices every city has a signature dog, from French Bulldogs in New York City and Chihuahuas in Los Angeles, to Boston Terriers in Boston and Pitbulls in Brooklyn. She didn’t notice a clear favorite in Pittsburgh, which is probably a good thing. We must have most diverse dog population in the nation. Everyone loves taking photos of their dog, but Totolici has truly made it an art form. And she’s even ready to share her tricks with anyone who wants to take portraits of their pup. “I would recommend taking your dog on a long walk to drain as much energy as possible (if necessary). Then wait a little bit and use their favorite treats to bribe them into position. Get down on their level

and shoot away,” Totolici said. “There is no substitute for practice, the more you shoot, the more great angles you will discover.” While Joanna has certainly made a name herself, there are still a few famous (and infamous) dogs she wishes she could have shot, including Toto from the Wizard of Oz and Laika, the first dog (and first live creature) in space. (She’s currently holding out for a few humans, like Kate Winslet, Sydney Pollak, Whoopi Goldberg and Madonna). She is open for whatever comes her way. “As for the future, my photography is my seeing-eye dog: I will follow it wherever it might lead,” she said. Totolici is lucky enough to combine her work with her dog’s play time. “Having a dog has changed my life in so many little ways that, when added up, I feel I am a radically different person,” she gushed. “I have met so many wonderful people through the dog world, with many of which I have become good friends. My dog makes me happier by at least one notch every day. You can’t put a price on that, can you?”

Dogs possess no judgment and love you unconditionally, which is why so many people consider them part of their family rather than a pet. Some would even say dogs are part of their souls. People often feel lost without their pets, or, at the very least lonely when traveling without them. This sentiment is most certainly shared by Fairmont Hotel & Resorts, including Fairmont Pittsburgh. In March 2010, Fairmont Pittsburgh opened its doors and welcomed its first guests. Just a year and a half later, in August 2011, Fairmont Pittsburgh welcomed a new staff member simply (and adoringly) known as, “Edie.” A white Boxer/Labrador Retriever mix, Edie is the hotel’s official Canine Ambassador. Edie – whose name is appropriately inspired by Andy Warhol

and his muse, Edie Sedgwick – continues a long tradition of canine ambassadors at Fairmont properties. Over 10 Fairmont properties in the U.S. are home to canine ambassadors. “Fairmont recognizes and appreciates that many of our guests are away from home for business or leisure and often miss their own dogs. Edie is readily available to accompany them on walks around the hotel or even just sit with them in the lobby when they need a moment to unwind,” said Julie Abramovic, public relations director at Fairmont Pittsburgh and “mommy” to Edie during off hours (when they both aren’t working at the hotel). Abramovic recounted a time when an out-of-town law firm was stationed at the hotel to work on a local case and

requested Edie join them on their lunch hour each day to offer some reprieve from their grueling work. It seems like a pretty sweet set up for a dog when it comes to, well, being a dog. Edie works five days a week and is stationed in the lobby where she relaxes on her cozy bed near the concierge and warmly welcomes guests. Edie can also often be found prancing around the lobby “helping” other staff members with their day-to-day activities. That’s where she was when I met her. Edie has a lovable face and a crooked tail. Abramovic explained when Edie was a puppy, she was found on the side of the road in Ohio, thought to be hit by a car at some point. Circle Tail, Inc., an assistance dog program in Pleasant Plain, Ohio, took Edie in and started training her to become a service dog. With an admiring smile, Abromovic said, “Edie essentially flunked out of training as handlers quickly realized that she was too outgoing and social.” By our accounts, this was a good problem to have, as the joy Edie brings to the staff and guests of Fairmont Pittsburgh is almost instantly palpable upon seeing her interact with everyone. “There has been an overwhelming response to Edie from our guests, our staff and even people that just work and live close to the hotel,” Abramovic said. “People who aren’t even staying at the hotel will often stop in to say hello to her or give her a quick hug.” As I sat in the lobby with Julie Abramovic and Edie, it was easy to forget I wasn’t in my own home with my 90 pound Labrador retriever, Crosby. As much as I wanted to allow Edie to crawl on my lap, I had to remind myself that Abramovic would probably discourage such behavior because not everyone is a dog lover. She

doesn’t want Edie to develop bad habits. Edie is, after all, treated just like all of her other colleagues – she wears a nametag, keeps an appointment book and has her own e-mail address. It’s easy to forget Edie is held to the same behavioral standards as her colleagues (if you exclude the fact that most of Fairmont Pittsburgh employees are discouraged from carrying toys around in their mouths). That sort of comfort and amnesia is exactly what Fairmont

of opportunities for Edie to change your mind. And for those travelers and locals alike who adore dogs, we encourage you to stop by Fairmont Pittsburgh and allow Edie to brighten your day.

Pittsburgh wants its guests to feel when they are around Edie – a sense of being right at home with their own dog. Fairmont Pittsburgh is a pet-friendly hotel and encourages travelers to bring their own furry friends when they visit. They offer healthy treats made by Executive Chef Naomi Gallego, walking maps of the city, complimentary dog beds and dishes. Abramovic pointed out one guest in particular who has taken quite a liking to the hotel, a bull mastiff named Stella, who makes herself right at home during every visit. For guests who aren’t dog lovers (yet), don’t worry, Edie has impeccable manners and won’t bother you unless you ask her to. Edie plans on hosting her own events at the hotel with other canine companions and is getting involved in the community at schools, nursing homes and local events. If you’re not a dog lover, there will be plenty 31

e have all heard the saying, “You should walk a mile in my shoes.” Whoever coined that phrase was obviously not a shoe lover. For most ladies, our shoes become a part of us. It is so important to find the perfect pair. I compare it to finding a mate; we need a shoe that is comfortable, compliments us, can take the good with the bad and is the envy of all of our friends. While I was spending countless hours pouring over websites scouting out my next love affair with footwear, I stumbled upon a site that has changed my life forever...MyShoes.com. MyShoes.com launched in February 2010, and was created by a group of shoeobsessed ladies who were always looking for better ways to shop for the latest craze in footwear. Their mission is to provide the best price possible and give shoppers honest information so they can make smart purchases. They understand a woman’s passion for shoes and encourage her enthusiasm. This is no ordinary website. It is luxury and simplicity at your fingertips! The days of bouncing from site to site are over. MyShoes.com lists the lowest prices from hundreds of brands and retailers, saving you time and money! Best of all, the site includes coupon codes to bring you the best deals. Product Manager, Katie Colleton commented on the inception of MyShoes. com, “With an office dynamic of nearly 80% female, shoes were definitely a topic of interest, and with our history of launching leading online shopping sites such as PromotionalCodes.com, the creation of myShoes.com only seemed natural. We got together and brainstormed about our shopping process. As avid online shoppers, we would first browse the Internet to find the perfect item. Secondly, we would use tools to compare prices throughout the Internet. Lastly, we would

FEATURE

go to PromotionalCodes.com to find any coupons to help us get the best price possible. We thought to ourselves, why not combine all of these steps into a fun, unique process and so myShoes.com was born.” Boots, loafers, platforms and espadrilles, are just some examples of what you will find here. Check out the hottest styles from top designers that would make Carrie Bradshaw weak in the knees. These include Badgley Mischka, Christian Louboutin, Betsey Johnson and Manolo Blahnik, just to name a few. Shopping on a budget? No problem. MyShoes.com offers fabulous styles and trends at various price points, offering an “Under $25” option. Can’t decide what pair is best for you? Consult their Shoe Stylist. Not only do they provide personalized recommendations, but they also help you make wise buying decisions by offering online coupons. At MyShoes.com, you will find countless shoe trends. One of my favorites is the Eco-Friendly. Made from sustainable, recycled and vegan materials, going green is more about doing our part than it is about color. Many fashionistas long believed that being environmentally friendly meant being unfashionable. Those days are gone, and these shoes prove just that. You will find them on the feet of A-list celebrities and talented designers alike. Pre-historic cave drawings from more than 15,000 years ago show humans with animal skins or furs wrapped around their feet. Shoes, in some form or another, have been around for a very very long time. Although I am uncertain where my obsession comes from, I am confident that it dates back to my ancestry. My mom, grandmother, aunt, great aunt and beyond can all be seen in vintage photographs proudly donning the most contemporary shoes of their time. Now, with the advancements in technology, we

can have our shoes and wear them too! It is all within a click of a button and a coupon code away. On the future of MyShoes.com, Colleton commented, “MyShoes.com is constantly growing. Whether we’re adding more products to our catalog of over 100,000 shoes, or partnering with a new retailer to give our users the widest selection possible, MyShoes.com will continue to evolve. We are actively looking for ways to refine our tools and make the system as efficient as possible while maintaining the overall goal of MyShoes.com, making shoe shopping fun for women everywhere.”

Fetching Fashion COOL V S. CRUEL CO N T ES T K ICK S A NIM A L CRUELT Y TO T HE CURB

ART Nick Lowe, the early ‘80’s new wave rocker once sang, “You have to be cruel to be kind.” The line, albeit cliché, is one that became the fashion industry’s motto through the years, especially in terms of design. Using fur and leather to “kindly” create a fashionable, ready-to-wear garment for fashion connoisseurs, the industry lost sight of the cruelty animals face to create these pieces. Until now. The Humane Society of the Unites States is standing up to the fashion industry’s cruel treatment of animals by holding several events to promote fur-free fashion, including the Cool vs. Cruel Contest. The society recently judged its seventh annual Cool vs. Cruel Contest – a competition that works with students from The Art Institutes to improve a runway look using fur. As Michelle McDonald, fashion outreach manager of the fur-free campaign for The Humane Society said, “This competition gives the next generation of designers the opportunity to learn about why so many people are opposed to animal fur, as well as try their hand at alternatives.” Those who entered tried their hands at removing or replacing fur from a wellknown label’s design without compromising the “look” of the garment or simply recreating it. Competitors selected their inspirational garment from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Fendi, Gucci and

Oscar de la Renta. The contest’s judging panel included high profile professionals from the fashion industry including designers John Bartlett, Victoria Bartlett, Marc Bouwer, Ally Chomer, Leanne Hilgart and Elizabeth Olsen; fashion photographer Nigel Barker; magazine editors Mickey Boardman and Shelly Vella; and The Discerning Brute blog founder Joshua Katcher. A group of eighteen finalists were selected by these top industry experts from over 200 entries. The winner was awarded a five day expense-paid internship with a fur-free designer Victoria Bartlett in New

York City, as well as a cash prize. This year’s winner, Johana Zara from The Art Institute of Vancouver, was announced on November 18, 2011. Zara earned the prize with her Fendi-inspired piece using long faux-fur, faux-suede and polyester chiffon. One of the contest’s finalists included native Pittsburgher Golden Skyy, an experienced designer and student. Skyy, whose college background has included FIDM, Parsons and a study program in Tokyo, Japan, in addition to The Art Institute, is no stranger to the design industry. He began designing dresses at age 10, and has not stopped working with

fashion since. “I decided to enter the contest because I love challenges. One big thing with this one is that I love animals. I have four birds and two dogs,” Skyy said. “I never really paid attention to the brutal side of animal cruelty, but when I started to, it steered my design angle differently.” Skyy’s design, a gray, geometric dress, utilized ruffles to create the volume typically achieved by fur. The dress features a high collared neck and strong shoulders, along with hand-created beading. “My garment does not use fake fur. I figured that it wasn’t innovative to use fake fur,” Skyy explained. “I wanted to show my skills—tailoring and beading. It was hard work, but it shows so much. My garment stood out like a sore thumb.” According to Skyy, this is why he came so close to winning, placing third in the contest. “I believe I have a strong vision,” explained Skyy. “For the past seven years, I have had a sort of design aesthetic that

is unique. I take important dates, such as birthdays, from an important individual, align these with astrology and use a mathematical skew to incorporate these things into my measurements.” For this garment in particular, Skyy said his inspiration came from his mom, who taught him to sew, crochet and bead at a young age. “I got the idea from a dream,” he elaborated. “I had an original design, but it just wasn’t working. I usually have very descriptive dreams about my designs, and I had not had one about that particular garment. Then, about three weeks before it was due, I dreamed my mother was assisting me with the dress, so I redesigned the old one.” His mother, though, was not the only inspirational factor in the design. “There were two sort of elements in the design. My mom, and a cruelty-free design,” said Skyy. This competition was Skyy’s first time working with The Humane Society. However, he seems rather impressed with their mission.

“I think it’s an amazing, humble thing they are doing. People need to pay it attention,” he noted. “In history, fur was used to depict status but we no longer need that. I think [The Humane Society] has impacted the use, or need even, for fur, and they have the ability to impact designers such as myself.” Skyy hopes to see the competition continue to grow as time goes on. “I think that continuing with competitions, and making designers aware that there are alternatives, is how the message will get out,” he said. “Everyone could benefit, even with up-and-coming designers who aren’t in school yet.” What’s next in Skyy’s future? He is hoping for a spot in next year’s Pittsburgh Fashion Week, which he already has designed a 25-piece collection for. Until then, though, Skyy said, “I want to continue on the road of fur-free fashion. I want to set an example to show other designers that it is possible to make fashion without fur.”

any a late-night craving has been satisfied by some delicious Thai food. But, did you know that Thailand is also an amazing, exotic, and surprisingly affordable place to travel? The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is in Southeast Asia, nestled within the center of the Indochina Peninsula. It boasts many beautiful beaches and maritime activities, and is surrounded by the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Statistically, Thailand is the world’s 51st largest country and the 21st most populous country, with its largest city being Bangkok. The vast majority of the population is of Thai descent, followed by Chinese, Malay, Mons, Khmers, hill tribes, and other minorities. The primary religion of Thais is Buddhism, which is practiced by a stunning 95% of the kingdom’s residents. While Thai is the official language of the country, you’ll be well off if you just speak English, too. Thailand has transitioned towards becoming a more modern kingdom, with a strong tourism industry – so you will be welcome there. Areas that are popular amongst tourists are Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Ko Samui, among others. Some appealing attractions that you’ll want to whisk yourself away to include Koh Lang, Koh Chann, and Koh Samet, which are all beautiful and tranquil islands with comfortable amenities and gorgeous resorts. Visiting any of these islands will promise serene sunsets, an air of sensual relaxation, and an unspoiled beauty that is unsurpassed. All in all, there are five regions of Thailand: North, Northeast, East, Central, and South, which are divided into 75 provinces that are unique and geographically distinct from each other. Attendees abandoned their real identities at home for a chance to become someone (or something) else for the night. The Halloween fete -- that also served as a launch party for the October/November issue -- provided a chance for everyone who’s ever wanted to be invited to a Venetian ball to scour every costume store in Pittsburgh for the perfect mask. A beautifully lit ice sculpture welcomed guests in the lobby and directed them to photographers for a chance to show off their attention-grabbing apparel and strike their best red-carpet pose. The MANIAC crowd never disappoints when it comes to party attire and this masquerade was no different. Masks ranged from delicate purple lace to gilded gladiator masks and included anthropomorphic varieties such as cats, feathered birds and butterflies. The “Best Mask” of the night was awarded to Jesse Morgan, a native of Michigan, current

Chicago resident, and 7 Springs Resort weekend warrior in the winter months (yes, she travels that far to ski). Jesse even nicknamed her mask, “The Snow Princess,” as a tribute to her love of skiing. The MANIAC staff loved the mysterious, enchanting aura Jesse exuded with her silver-frosted, snowflake-shaped mask. The decor at Meat & Potatoes was a perfect backdrop for this event. Seated in black lacquered bar stools, guests bellied up to taste the signature cocktail, a sparkling mojito, which the expert mixologists -- including regular MANIAC contributor, Adam Castleforte -- created with sparkling wine and mojito rum. Antique mirrors, bleached skulls and horns created warm, weird shadows where guests could socialize, dance or be entertained. Comedy magician, Lee Terbosic, provided illusions, slight-of-hand and even mind reading with the art of magic. Lee made guests of the party feel as if they

were part of the show, not just spectators (as if you could ever say that our readers were only spectators in any situation). True to that observation, the dance floor was crowded while DJ Pete Butta provided an eclectic mix of 80’s, alternative rock, indie and club mixes. Having their satisfactory fill of creative libations and delectable offerings from the menu, guests left the masquerade, removed their masks and reluctantly returned to their real identities. Besides a few minor photo invasions by an arm belonging to the man who “shoots loads of film in Pittsburgh,” the evening was a huge success.

“The combination of the original iconic architecture and Wearstler’s signature style, creates an inspiring and vivacious setting for both day visitors and overnight guests alike”, said General Manager of Avalon Hotel, Pradeep Ramon. Located near some of the most popular attractions Los Angeles has to offer, including Rodeo Drive and the Sunset strip, the Avalon Hotel is a small boutique hotel that echoes the relaxed “patio lifestyle” of the mid-20th century California. “If you watch Mad Men, you’ll know the kind of style we’re talking about”, said Ramon. “We pride ourselves on attention to detail. We feature something for everyone whether a guest is staying while on a business trip or on vacation”. Avalon Hotel is a comfortable, stylish retreat and has a lively, vibrant atmosphere that offers guests the best of the best. With custom-designed furnishings and beds, complete with Italian Frette linens, it’s no wonder guests are left feeling like royalty. Although there is not an actual spa on the premises, the Avalon will contact a number of spas for their guests’ pampering. Massage therapists from the Beverly Hills area perform in-room treatments for guests, just like the most elite in Hollywood experience. Each one of the 83 rooms at the hotel has high quality amenities available, such as Neil George bath and body products, fully stocked mini-bars, turn-down service upon request, highspeed wired and wireless Internet access, and much, much more. Three separate buildings make up the luxurious hotel: The Canon Residence, The Beverly Tower, and The Olympic. Nestled on a quiet residential street, The Canon Residence is the perfect, peaceful getaway where guests can relax in comfort. With fifteen rooms total, eight of which are junior suites with stocked kitchenettes, this building is ideal for long-term stays. The junior suites provide sleek, king-sized beds, a dining area that seats two, a wet bar and

a microwave. It also features an aspect that not many hotels offer: a pet-friendly policy. ‘Man’s best friend’ can accompany their guests, as long as the pets weigh less than twenty-five lbs. A security deposit of $100 is also needed. The Beverly Tower consists of twentyfive rooms and is also home to the 800 square foot, one-bedroom penthouse. High rollers that reside here will be captivated by the sprawling 900 square foot outdoor patio and gorgeous views the penthouse presents. It is well-appointed with a full-size king bed, a separate living room with a sleeper sofa,

and even a dining table that seats up to four people. The penthouse suite is also equipped with two roomy bathrooms, which include an over-sized master bath and extra storage space. Last, but certainly not least, The Olympic building is made up of forty-three guestrooms, several of which overlook the vintage-style pool. The Olympic is also home to the hotel’s award-winning restaurant. There are also two, one-bedroom suites located in the Olympic building. Stylish and contemporary, the 850 square foot onebedroom suites feature mid-century artwork as well as classic and custom designed furniture. The king-sized bedroom, large bath and separate living space, complete with a sofa bed, make these rooms the perfect space for a California escape. Aside from the plush suites, the Avalon offers a number of features including great rooms, a gym with state-of-the-art equipment, a versatile conference room, and perhaps the most amazing feature:

Avalon’s restaurant, Oliverio. Mirko Paderno is the Executive Chef of the restaurant, and focuses on creating classic Italian cuisine with a modern, Mediterranean flair. Prized dishes such as homemade foccacia bread, saucy pastas, and delicious pizzas keep guests full and coming back for more. On a lighter note, fare such as tuna tartare and other low-cal dishes are also available. No matter what time of day your stomach rumbles, Oliverio has you covered. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant is always ready to serve their diners, offering happy-hour specials on weekdays and 24hour room service. If dining in the sunshine is more your style, enjoy a meal al fresco by the pool instead of indoors. When staying in California, enjoying the sunshine is an activity on the list; Avalon Hotel’s pool area is exceptionally beautiful. Surrounded by cushioned lounge chairs and celebrityesque cabanas, the 1950’s inspired pool is the epitome of relaxation. The pool is perfectly located adjacent to Oliverio, where guests can dine poolside on the restaurant patio. During the day, the sparkling blue water highlights the vivid blue décor of Oliverio, as guests enjoy the West Coast sunshine and take a dip in the crystal clear water. Beverly Hills offers the best of the best, and the Avalon Hotel is no exception. There are no shortcomings at this haven. From the lavish, comfortably spacious suites, the classic, vintage-style pool, and the awardwinning restaurant, Oliverio, the Avalon Hotel is the top-notch sanctuary in Beverly Hills. If you’re still not convinced, (and honestly how could you not be?), the prices are a head-turning surprise. For five star, regal services, don’t expect to pay five star prices. “We consider ourselves ‘affordable Beverly Hills,’ offering a lux-lifestyle experience with value and at a surprisingly reasonable rate”, Ramon adds.

When it comes to dog training, Misty Pines knows best. They have been successfully training dogs and their owners since 1975. Not only do the trainers teach your dog manners, they also teach you how to reinforce good behaviors and eliminate unwanted behaviors. Misty Pines offers a variety of classes, programs, activities and services to enrich you and your dog’s lives. The facility offers group classes, private lessons, behavior consultations, boot camp training (a two-week board and train program) and even daycare training. Specialty classes, like agility and Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dogs International preparation, are offered monthly. Bird dog training for retrievers and pointing breeds is available as well. Misty Pines’ group format is unique because there is no minimum or maximum number of classes in the program. Each dog can learn at his or her own speed and advance throughout the five levels at an individual pace. Misty Pines accepts all ages (although pups must be at least 12 weeks old) and breeds of dogs into their training programs, and offers behavioral consultations for dogs who suffer from behavior and emotional problems, such as aggression and anxiety. At Misty Pines’ huge 5,000 square foot training center, the learning and fun never stop. Pets can continue to come back to maintain their skills and socialize with friends in the 25 acre dog park, free of charge, before and after class. Classes are offered days and evenings Tuesday through Thursday and during the day on Saturday. Misty Pines Dog Park is the complete pet company that loves the company of people and their pets.

Let’s be honest. If there is anything our dogs love more than a walk with Mom or Dad, it might be playtime at the dog park. Lucky Paws offers Pittsburgh’s only indoor and outdoor dog park. The outdoor space has plenty of off-leash property, with a 3,000 square foot, zero-entry swimming pool and water park designed and maintained specifically for dogs. Of course the pool is seasonal, but the outdoor area is still a safe and healthy place for your pet in the winter, with its special anti-microbial K9 Grass and six foot high fence. Dogs can play on plenty of equipment, including mountains and tunnels, and then hydrate with a drink from the doggie water fountain. Don’t worry humans, there is a separate water fountain for you too! The indoor park is a 3,500 square foot facility with EvoFlex rubber flooring, which is gentle on dogs’ joints and paws. The indoor area is easy to access, as it is connected through the backyard play area. Inside, pets (and their upright counterparts) can enjoy a sound system and big screen T.V. A waterfall, created just for dogs, provides a fun and entertaining way for thirsty dogs to get a drink. Lucky Paws is a private park and charges an entrance fee of $10 per dog. This winter, Lucky Paw’s outdoor park is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to sundown and the indoor and outdoor parks are open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be sure to take time out of your day to take your pup to play.

If your pet needs a dog-gone break, send he or she over to The Cozy Inn for a relaxing spa treatment. When you take your pet to the spa, you’ll notice the soft music playing in the background and the low-energy vocals of the employees. Pets will respond immediately to these elements, unwinding for a little rest and relaxation. Dogs can get the safe-to-lick oatmeal, honey and egg facial and/or a body massage. Massages prove to be good therapy for pets and also provide relief to dogs suffering from painful hip dysplasia, arthritis and backaches. Swedish and deep therapeutic massages are offered as well as sports massages for the athletically inclined pet. There is even a hot tub for the pups to socialize and take a break from the dog days. Not only is it a source of relaxation, the hot tub is also used for Hydrotherapy for pups going through post-surgical rehabilitation. With its numerous spa packages, The Cozy Inn is like a Nemacolin for dogs. “It’s all about the pets having a wonderful time and taking care of them completely,” said owner Carol BoerioCroft. “We take care of them mentally, spiritually, medically, physically and emotionally.” The Cozy Inn is also a daycare and overnight resort. You can drop your pet off at the spa, and after the services are complete he or she can hang out with the other pups for the rest of the day. The Cozy Inn is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, making now a better time than ever to pamper your pet.

If you’re looking to shop local for your pet, head over to Petagogy (pronounced pet-uh-goh-jee) in Shadyside. The independently owned store offers Pittsburgh’s best selection of premium and natural pet foods and supplies. “Our focus is on food and nutrition,” explained Heather Blum, one of four owners. “We want to help you learn about what you’re feeding your pet and make sure the food and treats you’re giving them are the best they can be in terms of natural ingredients and sourcing.” When it comes to food, our beloved pups should be eating protein based food instead of corn based like a lot of brand-named food served in chain pet stores. Petagogy carries numerous small, independent food products produced by small and familyowned businesses. The store also carries leashes, collars, beds, supplements, shampoos, toys and much more. Shopping at Petagogy is a fun experience for humans and dogs alike. There’s a community water bowl in the store for pets to refresh after browsing the shelves up and down the aisles. One weekend a month (and every Thursday through Sunday in the summer months), Petagogy serves doggie soft serve ice cream. Flavors range from veal and turkey to pumpkin in the fall months and “peppermutt” in December. Dogs love this treat and this store. With its knowledgeable staff and wide selection of pet products, Petagogy is the perfect place to take your dog for a little retail therapy.

It’s an awful feeling when you have to go out of town and realize you cannot take your pooch with you. Do not fret MANIACS! Chances are, at Camp Bow Wow your pet will have more fun than you while on vacation. Overnight guests play all day in fun daycare activities on the 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor play space, complete with K9 Grass, play equipment and pup pools for the hot summer months. Every play area contains climate controlled indoor space as well as unlimited access to the outdoor play yards so all campers are able to enjoy the fresh air and take a potty break as they please. If you are feeling a bit homesick for your furry friend, don’t worry, each play area is equipped with a live Webcam. Camp Bow Wow even takes the extra precautions to ensure the safest play environment possible. “Our playgrounds are divided into five separate play areas, including a space designed just for teacup pups, so dogs can be grouped into size and temperamentappropriate play groups,” explained owner Barb Murray. After an exhausting day socializing with other pups, your dog will catch some zzz’s in one of the large overnight cabins, which are 4x8 or 5x10 in size and come with a comfy cot and fleece blanket. All pups are tucked in at night with a tasty campfire treat and soft music to help them fall asleep. Luxury suites are also available, which are larger than the standard cabins and have TVs and private webcams installed in each so you may find comfort knowing your pup is happy and safe. And don’t alter your travel plans with the holidays approaching. Camp Bow Wow is open 365 days a year, making it the perfect fit for your pet.

As any dog-lover knows, when it comes time to stay away from home, you want to bring your pet with you. Fairmont Pittsburgh understands guests’ pets are like family and therefore offers an accommodating home away from home. “Fairmont Pittsburgh is a contemporary Four Diamond luxury hotel, and we offer exceptional service and amenities to both our two-legged and four-legged guests,” Julie Abramovic, public relations manager, said. “You get a luxury hotel experience and comfortable and home-like amenities, like the ability to travel with your pet.” The hotel offers complimentary pet beds for canine guests, as well as pet food and treats on its in-room dining menus. If your dog has a sweet tooth, then he or she will love the delicious homemade dog treats offered in the hotel, made by pastry chef Naomi Gallego. Fairmont Pittsburgh offers more than just a place for you and your dog to stay, it also provides a friend for your pet. Edie, a white boxer/Labrador retriever, is the hotel’s official canine ambassador and she loves to socialize with other friendly pets. The dogs can meet in the lobby for some play time, and then the concierge can suggest some of the best walking trails in the city for you and your pet. The hotel charges a pet fee of $25 per night. No matter how long the stay, you and your pet will enjoy your time at Fairmont Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH VET SPECIALTY & EMERGENCY CENTER 807 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh PA 15237 412.366.3400 www.pvs-ec.com When it comes to our pets’ health, we must hope for the best and prepare for the worst. If an emergency does arise, know that your dog will be in great hands at the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. The emergency room is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with doctors and technicians on duty at all times. It has an open door policy, much like its human counterpart. PVSEC has a larger emergency staff than any other hospital in the region, which helps to keep wait times minimal. PVSEC strives to employ staff with a good bedside manner. “Our goal is to provide excellent care for the patient and compassion for the pet owner,” explained Dr. Kenton Rexford. The hospital is equipped with the widest array of diagnostic capabilities, from high field MRI and CT machines to electronic radiographs and ultra sounds. The center also houses more different specialties and specialists than other regional hospitals, promoting its unique capability of a specialist’s opinion. For example, if you bring your pet in on an emergency and find out he or she has a heart condition, the doctor could consult a cardiologist and hand the case, and your pet’s health, over to the specialist. With the holidays approaching, Dr. Rexford wants to remind pet owners to keep their dogs away from Christmas candy and chocolate, which can cause toxicity, and tinsel and ribbons, which can cause obstructions in the digestive track. Remember, a safe and healthy dog is a happy dog.

ANIMAL FRIENDS 562 Camp Horne Road, Pittsburgh PA 15237 412.847.7000 www.thinkingoutsidethecage.org When it comes to adopting a new furry friend, Animal Friends is more than just a shelter. It serves as a home to unwanted animals while they wait for the perfect parent to come and claim them. Animal Friends helps pets of every age and every background. Some pets are brought in by the public and others come from numerous local shelters. Animal Friends also has a Humane Officer who rescues animals from situations of abuse and neglect. Animals are provided a quality experience while at the shelter, they do not stay in cages all day. Dogs enjoy daily walks, training sessions and down time to cuddle with volunteers. The shelter also has a mile of wooded walking trails and large off-leash dog parks. Before buying a pet from a breeder, explore the option of adoption. Animal Friends requests between $60-$100 for pet adoption. All pets have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before adoption and there is no fee for these services. Currently, the organization is waiving the requested donation for all dogs age 5 and up because, according to Jolene Miklas, director of communications, Animal Friends believes pet adoption is truly “priceless.” And, until December 31, the shelter is also waiving the adoption request for pets age two and older. If you don’t want to adopt an animal but still want to help the cause, Animal Friends is always looking for volunteers. Get involved!

WOOF STOP BARKERY

DIAMOND IN THE RUFF

139 Hunter Drive, Cranberry Twp. PA 16066 724.776.6863 www.woofstop.com

155 South 18th Street, Pittsburgh PA 15203 412.381.2200 www.diamondinruff.com

When it comes to rewarding your pet, you want to feed them nothing but the best. Instead of buying dog treats in mass quantities at a pet store, opt for organic treats from Woof Stop Barkery. All treats are homemade and baked fresh daily using the highest-quality, human-grade organic ingredients produced from farms in Pennsylvania, which ensure the freshest and healthiest dog treats possible. The barkery currently offers five flavors, including beef, chicken, peanut butter and honey, pumpkin and cinnamon and sweet potato and parsley. If your dog has food allergies, these treats are an excellent choice because the store provides wheat, corn, soy and gluten free options. “Woof Stop Barkery is a home-based business,” explained owner Nancy Hans. “So when we say ‘From our Home to Yours’ this is exactly what we mean.” Hans said she bakes organic treats because our dogs are family and we feed the best quality food to all members of our family. The barkery is happy to customize its products for any special occasion and has recently added decorated holiday cookies and birthday cakes to its repertoire. A half pound of treats starts at $5.59, a pound at $10.59, and a sample pounder for the dog who likes variety is $13.99. Your dog will love these great tasting healthy treats and most likely give you one satisfied WOOF.

Choosing a groomer for your dog can be stressful. We understand you want someone to care and nurture your pet during the grooming experience, one that is sometime stressful for animals. That is why Chrissy Marburger, owner of Diamond in the Ruff, is proud her business. It offers a one of a kind grooming experience. Only a certain amount of pets are groomed each day because the salon believes in quality, not quantity. Full service dog grooms are $40 and up, based on breed size, condition of coat and desired grooming styles. Diamond in the Ruff also offers spa packages, like the popular Scent of the Month package, which features a new scent of shampoo, conditioner, facial, teethbrushing, and cologne to coincide with the holiday. Since winter weather is known to wreak havoc on our dogs’ skin and paws, the salon features soothing oatmeal scrubs and Musher’s secret paw treatment to protect our pups. Diamond in the Ruff stays involved in the community. It recently sponsored the Southside #24 Local Fire Department by donating two sets of pet oxygen masks. Marburger said her doggie customers love walking past the fire station, which is located across the street from her business, and getting plenty of attention from the firemen. She thought this was the perfect way to say thank you. Marburger got the inspiration for her business after working at a corporate salon for eight years, where a malnourished and frightened shih tzu named Buddy was abandoned at one year of age. Buddy was her true “Diamond in the Ruff.”

Located in Lawrenceville, Urban Dog Day Care & Day Spa is a 7,000 square-foot, cage-free facility offering doggy daycare, boarding, grooming, self-wash and inhome pet sitting. With over 15 years of experience in the kennel industry, co-owners Sarah Chirico and Emil Radinick started Urban Dog with the intent of offering a place for dogs to socialize or, in most cases, a safe, loving environment for people to leave their dogs for the day while they are at work. A loving environment is what every dog owner seeks for his or her pooch, but Urban Dog goes a step further and offers down right pampering. A bevy of spa packages are available including “Go Roll in the Mud,” a Dead Sea mineral mud scrub treatment or a “Blueberry Facial Treatment,” a refreshing facial that effectively removes dirt, dander and tear stains. “Aromatherapy baths such as an invigorating blend of pomegranate, lemon grass and peppermint is a favorite among clients,” commented Chirico. All shampoos and conditioners are organic, vegan friendly and available for purchase at Urban Dog. Urban Dog also offers holistic, organic, all natural, 7-grain and grain free food products. Open daily from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm, Urban Dog offers the freshest perspective and “coolest” Lawrenceville approach to the run-of-the-mill doggy day care and spa.

PROFILE When the corporate gig wasn’t fulfilling and the non-profit position wasn’t paying the bills, Jodi Hackett took her passion for pets to the professional level. The Pitt Grad started the Great American Dog Walking Company using skills and experience gained while studying Marketing and later working at a major Animal Shelter in the city. While pet sitting pooches and walking dogs may sound like a piece of cake (or kibble), caring for everyone’s favorite family member is serious business. Here, the entrepreneur gives us the skinny on choosing a good caretaker for your furriest friend. MM: Why is choosing the right pet care provider/dog walker so important? JH: This choice involves some serious consideration because your dog walker or pet sitter will have access to two of your most precious things- your home and your dog- on a regular basis. It is absolutely

anyone that they may employ. MM: And Experience? JH: Ask if and how many training classes they have taken, as well as how long they have been working with animals. Are they trained in animal first aid (canine CPR is quite different from the human version)? Have they worked with many different breeds, including that of your own dog? How would they handle excessive pulling or lunging by your dog or the approach of an aggressive dog during a walk? Answers to these questions will give you a good idea of his or her experience level. MM: How about Reliability? JH: That too is something references may mention. But also consider how quickly they returned your call to schedule a meeting, if they have multiple ways to be contacted (i.e. cellphone, email, text), and if they have a journal or log that will be filled out at each visit to keep track of when they make visits that include how long they were there and what was accomplished.

worth it to take the extra time to seek out a person who is trustworthy, experienced, reliable and compassionate. MM: Short of a lie detector test, how do you tell if a dog walker is Trustworthy? JH: References from current clients are the best. If your neighbor or friend recommended the dog walker, that is one good reference, but get others. Also, ask if they can provide a recent criminal background check for themselves and

MM: And is there a way to measure Compassion? JH: Generally that is something you should try to judge when you meet him or her and see how they interact with your dog. MM: Any other tips for the Maniac Mutt owner looking for good canine care? JH: Interview more than one person, if possible, so you can compare... - the way your dog reacts to each of them. Your dog may be timid upon meeting one,

and snuggling up when meeting another. - the services offered. If one offers only daytime dog walks and another offers pet sitting, boarding, training, dog running, and pet taxi (to and from vet, groomer etc), the one with more services may be more useful down the road. - how many dogs they walk at a time and for how long. It is perfectly understandable to want your pet to be walked alonewithout other dogs, or to at least meet the other dogs ahead of time. - what kind of paperwork they have you fill out. They should request veterinarian information incase of an emergency, health history of your dog, a list of vaccinations, allergies, etc. - their insurance coverage. If your antique lamp is accidentally knocked over or mud tracked across your white carpet, your dog walker should have business insurance to cover such accidents.

SAVOY drink will get you in the holiday spirit with a sugar coated rim and a plum garnish,” Kerstetter said. “The White Chocolate Eggnog martini is also fantastic. I’ve taken Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur, Eggnog and rum with shaved white chocolate garnish to create a spin on the classic Eggnog drink. Another holiday favorite is gingerbread, so why not have a drink that emulates that flavor? The gingerbread martini does just that.” Interested in getting your drink on at Savoy this holiday season but are worried about making it there before the holiday

enjoy these great drinks for another couple of months. And, as promised, Savoy is lending your wallet a helping hand, by offering halfoff all martinis during their Friday Happy Hour from 5-7 p.m. Now that’s something we can all be thankful for. Now, if your holidays are anything like mine, everybody eats…a lot. Between the turkey, stuffing, ham, cranberry sauce and, of course, a hearty serving of guilt, there’s always a lot of work to be done. Sure you can have your big family gathering at grandma’s house, but have you considered going out for a holiday meal instead? If so,

Savoy will still serve up healthy alternatives. He jokingly went on the record saying, “Tis the season to treat yourself!” Hear that Maniacs? Holidays aren’t for diets of water and cheese or crazy Beyonce drinks. They are for eating, especially at Savoy. Which brings us to Santa’s favorites - the desserts. Nothing says the holidays like homemade goodies. On top of the delectable chocolate crème brulee topped with fest candy cane sugar, a wide variety of other desserts make Savoy stand out even more so than it already does. “The Tasting of Pumpkin is one of our

Savoy is absolutely your alternate home for the holiday this season. Everyone who walks through their door is considered family, and is treated - and fed - as such. Savoy’s Executive Chef Kevin Watson served us up some of the latest and greatest new menu items for the holidays, yet again showing diverse and inspiring dishes and desserts. Watson dished (pun intended) about what Maniacs could expect on the menu for the holiday season. “Our seasonal salad is a pomegranate orange fennel salad with a white balsamic dressing. Its bright flavors and deep characteristics provide comfort while maintaining lightness,” Watson said. “We also have The Wild Mushroom Tart, which is wild mushrooms, lightly-sautéed, served in a flaky pie shell in a Madeira Demi sauce.” One of our favorites, and Watson’s, is The Pumpkin Ravioli, with lobster sage cream sauce and black Cyprus salt. Continuing with the Chef’s health-conscious attitude,

new seasonal desserts, which is pumpkin bar, pumpkin semifreddo with an orange graham cracker crust and a drizzle of orange caramel sauce and milk chocolate cream topped with toasted pumpkin seeds,” Waston said. “We also have a chocolate crème brulee with candy cane sugar and a Fluffer Nutter, named after the sandwich. It has peanut butter ice cream, marshmallow, peanut butter powder, milk chocolate, peanut butter ganache, toasted brioche and diced bananas. The menu also boasts a warm banana bisque, which is poured tableside into the bowl.” Dig in, fellow Maniacs, and get ready to enjoy the holiday family-style with the creative geniuses at Savoy. You will definitely not be sorry you did. Plus, who doesn’t love a little extra serving of cheer during the chilly Pittsburgh winter? Whether you’re naughty or nice, Savoy has something to fulfill all your holiday wish lists this year.

If you have been following our Savoy features in the past few issues, you have witnessed Pittsburgh’s hottest new restaurant and social lounge break all kinds of molds and records, without breaking a sweat. From amazing parties and special Maniac Martinis, to new, healthy food options and community outreach, Savoy has been heating up the ‘Burgh in ways other restaurants only dream of. It should come as no surprise that Savoy is turning up the heat yet again this year, keeping us all warm this holiday season with fresh, new ideas and making them our home away from home for the holidays. 68

We had a chance to interview the masterminds behind Savoy’s amazing success and got the inside scoop as to what they have planned for restaurantgoers during these holly-jolly months. Drink-master extraordinaire Ty Kerstetter and Executive Chef Kevin Watson showed MANIAC how to have a merrier holiday (without breaking the bank) by stopping by Savoy and savoring life. With all the new holiday menu items coming our way, there will be enough to feed Santa and then some. Forget cookies, maybe your stocking will be a bit more stuffed this year if you leave out a Sugar Plum Martini and some chocolate crème brulee for Old Saint Nick. Savoy is certainly known for its creativity, especially when it comes to drinks. Pouring some of Pittsburgh’s most exhilarating beverages, like the Savoy Martini (which is literally served on fire), Savoy has always known how to spice things up behind the bar. First and foremost, we had to check in on the Maniac Martini, aka the Ice Cream Sundae Martini, and how it was fairing with Savoy-ians. Kerstetter told us not only is it doing great, but it will be on the menu for some time. “We have featured the Maniac Martini multiple times with good feedback,

and it is being featured on our dessert menu for the entire winter season,” Kerstetter said. Bottom’s up! Maniacs can expect a few new holiday drinks to keep the holiday spirit going strong from Savoy. “I love Christmas and drinks that warm during the cold months. So for the holiday season I have added a few that fall in line with both,” Kerstetter explained. “We have our very own homemade hot chocolate that is great by itself, but add either RumChata, Bailey’s Irish Cream or Peppermint Mocha Kahlua along with alcohol infused whipped cream and a flakey cylindrical cream filled cookie and you have the perfect after dinner drink.” Naturally, he didn’t stop there. Savoy always has something for everyone and they continue to prove it. Feeling homesick? No worries, Ty has created a little slice of home for you to sip on. “Along with our homemade hot chocolate, we are rolling out a martini that is pure American, the Apple Pie Martini,” he said. As if that wasn’t enough to wet your proverbial, holiday-themed whistle, the drink genius keeps us begging for more. “We are also adding a Martini straight out of a Christmas classic, “The Night Before Christmas,” The Sugar Plum Martini. CATHY “TALL CATHY” SCHODDE As the voice of 96.1 KISS FM between the hours of 10am and 1pm (M-Fri), Cathy Schodde -- better know to listeners as, “Tall Cathy” – admits that she sometimes shows up for work on the weekends wearing sweatpants and “looking like a hot mess.” However, beyond the laissez-faire dress code that is a major perk of working in radio (aside from hosting the occasional public event), Cathy’s personal style extends far beyond fashion and includes the four-legged love of her life, Bruce. As you might expect, “Tall Cathy” is a statuesque beauty -- born and raised in Pittsburgh -- with an exuberant smile and a “listen to me, what I have to say is going to entertain you” voice. This commanding persona has drawn listeners to her show for the past five years. Whether she is commentating on the latest Hollywood gossip, taking calls from enthusiastic Pittsburgh sports fans, or interviewing celebrities, Cathy’s relatable demeanor has made her a hallmark of Pittsburgh radio in recent years. Cathy has also become a hallmark of animal rescue efforts in western Pennsylvania. Every week Cathy teams up with the Washington Area Humane Society to feature a pet of the week in efforts to raise awareness, funds and find forever homes for the over 13,000 animals that the society helps every year. Animal rescue efforts have been especially important to Cathy since 2005 when she welcomed Bruce – a mutt mix – in to her life as the result of a similar project on 105.9 “The X. “ “When he came in, it was love at first sight. I sat down, he curled up in my lap and 70

I knew that he was meant to be my pup,” explained Cathy. Cathy estimates that Bruce is about seven years old now. About his personality and background, Cathy said, “My brother calls him a junk-yard dog. I think he’s a mix of Rottweiler, Shepherd and Chow (his tongue is pink with black spots). If you didn’t know him, you’d think a pen exploded in his mouth.” When asked to name her favorite thing about Bruce, Cathy confessed, “There are a million things I love about Bruce. He’s adorable, smart, cuddly and full of personality. But overall, my favorite thing about him is that he is always at the door when I come home and he’s super excited to see me. No matter what kind of day I have had, he always makes it better. He’s my little man.” The love between Cathy and Bruce was quite evident the day of the photo shoot for this article. Not surprisingly, her interaction with Bruce in front of the camera illustrated a level of dependence and comfort from both. The comfort Cathy finds with Bruce translates to the style choices she makes on a daily basis. You could refer to her as All-American in that she prefers ripped up jeans, Chuck Taylors and no makeup. “I’m a classic skinny jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, so I’ll dress up a casual look with accessories and a pair of heels of boots,” explained Cathy about her day-to-evening fashion approach. We asked Cathy about her favorite piece in her wardrobe to which she responded, “I love skinny jeans because you can dress them up or dress them down any way you want. I have way too many pairs of jeans.” Too much of a good thing is never enough and one thing is for certain; Pittsburgh can’t get enough of Cathy. She humbly recounted an interaction with a fan, “Someone got so excited that they cried when we met back stage at a concert. It was adorable. I was stunned and didn’t know to react. I’m just a girl from the North Hills, that’s all! Never in a million years did I ever expect that kind of reaction. It was very flattering.” Be sure to tune in for Cathy’s show every morning as we are sure that her beautifully unassuming personality and outwardly excitable desire to entertain and connect with people will have you at, “Hello!”

Animal Friends welcomed a soldout crowd of 476 to the Circuit Center and Ballroom. Black Tie & Tails was an important chance to celebrate the pets who so selflessly offer their whole hearts while supporting those who still desperately need help. Guests of Black Tie & Tails received a fantastic ‘Burgh-inspired invitation courtesy of Honorary Artist Dave Klug. A special benefactor reception began at 6:30 p.m. and offered guests the chance to neb around the silent auction. The Fluted Mushroom served upscale Yinzer favorites including gourmet pierogies, Steel City Sliders and the legendary cookie table. The extraordinary auctioneer Tripp Kline returned, with emcee Jim Krenn from WDVE, to coax all bid paddles into the air—especially when guests took the

opportunity to sponsor spays for pets in need. A special and meaningful highlight of the evening was when Animal Friends’ CEO David Swisher took guests behind-thescenes of a recent rescue in Garfield. In the midst of planning for the party, Animal Friends was called to a home with 70 cats living in filthy conditions. Rescue workers quickly mobilized to save the cats and bring them back to Animal Friends. And of course, there were plenty of chances to snuggle up with a grateful pup or steal a sweet moment with a lap cat, as Animal Friends’ homeless residents arrived dressed to the nines. This year’s Black Tie & Tails raised an incredible $409,000 for homeless animals and humane programming.

Remember that harmful UVA and UVB sunrays exist everywhere and every time of year. While cloudy winter days can filter out UVB, the more dangerous UVA rays are still reaching your skin. If there’s snow, the reflective rays of the sun are hitting your skin from all angles. Even in the winter, be sure to wear sun block containing zinc and titanium dioxide.

As an LA-based dermatologist, I see the emotional impact good or bad skin can have on a person’s well being. I understand all too well when we look better on the outside, it can help us to feel better on the inside. Taking good care of your skin is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy and youthful physical appearance. A great deal of skin health is related to personal hygiene habits, lifestyle and environmental factors. The latter is something we have less control over. We generally don’t have severe winter conditions in Southern California, but I often help people who are dealing with skin issues related to too much sun exposure and environmental pollution. Every area of the world carries its own unique external stressors on the skin. It’s difficult to escape 72

skin on your back. Afterward, put saran wrap over the skin and sleep with it overnight.

EAT, DRINK AND REST Combine all of the tips above with getting a good amount of nutrition, water and sleep. Seven to eight hours of sleep is critical to look and feel youthful. We may not have a lot of control over where we’re living and the climate of the area, but we do have the ability to educate and protect ourselves to offset nature’s havoc on our skin. This way we can look and feel good about our appearance any time of year. that we can protect and off set nature’s havoc on our skin. This way we can look and feel good about our appearance any time of year.

THE AIR During wintertime, decreased humidity and heaters dry the skin. It is best to use lotion liberally all over the body multiple times during the day.

SHOWERING Don’t put soap all over your body when you shower. It’s best to only use soap under your arms, around the groin area and on your feet. These areas have bacteria which cause odor, but sweat and dirt on other areas will wash off with water. Like soap, shower gels also dry on the skin and should be used only on the same areas that soap is used. Remember, shower gels have a PH balance close to soap. They can also strip away the top barrier of your skin, making it itchy and red. Don’t stay in the shower too long and don’t wash your skin too often. If you have dry skin, take showers every other day. If your back is itchy, don’t have the shower hit your back. Have it hit your chest instead.

LOTIONS & MOISTURIZERS Apply body lotion right after you get out of the shower while skin is damp. Also, applying lotion before you shower will prevent the drying effect of soap and hot water on the skin, especially on dry areas like the feet and back. If your skin is so dry that your lotion absorbs immediately, apply a very thick layer of lotion on your skin. This also includes the

Capalbo got into handling shows because of his family’s history. “My grandma Ruth greatly inspired me to show dogs. I always knew she had thousands of dogs racked up over the years that she showed, breed and groomed,” explained Capalbo. “My mom Kathy inherited her dog grooming business, and eventually, down the road it, all came to me.” Capalbo shows poodles in two different categories. He participates in the breed ring, a ring fully dedicated to a certain breed and that breed only, and Junior Showmanship, a ring where kids age nine to 18 all compete for best junior handler, 74

regardless of the dog breed. And according to Capalbo, having a poodle is more than a challenge, it’s also dedication. He said the breed is time consuming when it comes to coat maintenance and training. And on top of that, poodles are the second most intelligent breed of dogs, so as an owner you have to be careful they don’t outsmart you. Although Capalbo seems quite young for this type of sport, he insists there are a lot of young handlers showing dogs these days. He said most kids are born into a dog family, meaning a grandparent or parent showed dogs at some point and the passion for the sport was passed down by generations. The American Kennel Club started the junior showmanship program to increase the number of junior handlers. “Showing dogs is extremely fun,” Capalbo said. “If there were only older people showing, it would be a non-existing sport.” Dog shows are something both the handler and the pet can enjoy, and it teaches both to work together as a team. “You have to have just that right pace together in the show ring,” Capalbo said. Besides bringing out his competitive side, Capalbo said the shows also teach him a lot about responsibility. “When going to a dog show, you have to have twentyfour hour supervision on your animals,” he said. “Every dog show comes with a lot of brushing, combing and coat maintenance. I want that elegant beautiful poodle when I enter the show ring, and that does not come easy.” There is more to the sport than just winning. Capalbo appreciates the “plethora” of personal rewards the sport provides him. Of course he loves spending quality time with his pet, but he also enjoys making new friendships, some which he said he will keep for a lifetime. “Just like other sports, you and your ‘teammates’

both have something in common, so you are bound to build a long lasting relationship,” he elaborated. If you have ever watched a dog show, you know the atmosphere is a bit on the serious side. Everyone seems to know exactly what they’re doing and the show seems to flow ever so smoothly. But that’s not to say all shows are perfect. Capalbo has had his fair share of Maniac moments during competition. “I went to a dog show for the first time and had to go in the ring. I was not expecting to show a dog that day and certainly did not expect what was going to happen. A handler’s daughter had a horrible migraine and could not show up, so they filled me in for her,” Capalbo told MANIAC. “When I entered the ring, the dog tripped, but luckily I was able to keep my cool. The dog wanted to take a second jab at it and I nearly hit the pool of the tent. Proceeding to put the dog on the table, my ID number flew off and the judge had to go pick it up. I wasn’t getting first place that day.” In the future, Capalbo plans to become a professional handler. With all of his experience thus far, we are sure he’s going to be quite successful in his career. “This sport takes dedication, and I have to remind myself this over and over again,” Capalbo said. “I love this sport and when you are hooked there is no going back. Showing dogs becomes a part of you.”
