MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

ANOTHER EVOLUTION... It’s time for another evolution in the life of this big little independent entertainment magazine. If you know me at all, you know that I always like change. And It’s time for another MAGX shake-up. I want to grow bigger, break down borders and give you a more informative magazine than ever before. I want the magazine to more accurately reflect the entertainment climate of Deep South Texas. We need volunteers though. We (meaning mostly me) cannot be everywhere at once. If you would like to be a Social Photographer for MAGX, can resist the urge to get crazy at events and represent MAGX as a professional, please let us know. I am also looking for a solid team of interns...writers, designers and content editors. I need people with a “Go Get ‘Em” attitude and a passion for Entertainment, Art & Music, who want to report on the coolest events, craft interesting stories, interview national and local musicians and artists, who love to come up with killer design concepts, and be part of a creative collective who will take this magazine far beyond anything else the RGV has to offer. If this is you... then we need you here with us! Models, models everywhere! We are kicking off the BIKINI ISSUES a month early to get you in the summer spirit. We have several beautiful bikini models gracing the next 4 covers of MAGX. A special thanks to the amazing Frank of Noah Diego’s photography, Make-up artist extraordinaire Antonio Von Marrok, MAGX’s awesome model shoot coordinator Marla Vee, and the beautiful models Erica, Melissa and Crystal who will blow you away with their pics. Broken Poetz are back within the pages of MAGX and have a new album out this month. We love BP’s musical stylings. If you haven’t seen them live, you have to do so at your earliest convenience, even if it isn’t so convenient. They explode on stage with a hip hop meets classic, Caribbean, latin and hard rock style. It’s a party when they are on that stage, and they create awesome party music! Dj Beethoven is in the hoooouuuuussssseeee. He’s opened for some of the biggest DJ’s in the world, and now you can open this mag and read about his awesomeness. Events! We got plenty. From Summer slaughter to Datsik, to South Texas Horror Con, get the 411 on your favorite artists and events HERE and withing a 300 mile radius. Manson, Snoop, Rusko, Maiden and so many others. 6201 N 10th St McAllen, TX 78504 • (956) 627-3507 Ismael Cordona, owner, has been cooking up great Monterrey style burgers in Edinburg for 11 years. His recipe has been perfected through years of cooking and experimentation. The latest Toretto’s Burgers opened up on 10th street 3 months ago and continues the tradition of making delicious burgers like you’ve never tasted before. “Every thing is homemade.” says Cordona. “Nothing packaged or processed. We use only fresh ingredients. Most, like the cheeses, are imported from Monterrey for that authentic flavor. Of course we add our own twist to it to make it something truly unique.” But they do so much more than burgers. Tortas, tacos and more add to the already robust menu. “When you try the other dishes at Toretto’s,” says Cordona, “we want everything to have it’s own signature flavor, so we use different meats and tortillas for each our dishes.

We don’t want your torta tasting the same as your tacos.” The Toretto’s Burger, their flagship burger is a huge 2 patty monster with cheeses, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, mayo, ham, eggs... it’s so packed with fresh, deliciously prepared food that it’s hard to fit it into your mouth. It’s an explosion of deliciousness! Flavors blend together amazingly well, better than you may think, considering the burger contains all the foods from breakfast, lunch, dinner to midnight snack all in one. Like your burger with less? No problem. The best thing about Toretto’s burgers is that you can eat one plain and it still tastes amazing. That’s the true test of a burger. The added ingredients aren’t there to disguise an inferior product, they truly are there to | 6 |

enhance it. Saying they were “friendly” would be an understatement. He cheerfuly took my order, made conversation and checked on me often to make sure I had everything I needed. I had a perfect experience at Toretto’s Burgers. The food was amazing. From the fresh cut fries & the delicious cheeses, to the fresh ingredients in my burger, Toretto’s totally has my vote for the Best Burgers in the Valley. So what’s down the pipeline for Toretto’s? Mr. Cordona is a few weeks away from obtaining his beer liscense, and his “Sexy Toretto’s Girls” will be taking your orders and serving up your food in fast and friendly fashion. They will also have eating challenges, MAN vs FOOD style.

MAGX Talks with Resident Austin DJ and Producer...

Daniel Allen MAGX: What can we expect when we go to one of your gigs? DA: Sexy techno and throwback house on a proper sound system, with plenty of action on the dance floor. MAGX: Best spot to play in Austin? DA: Plush. The bar staff is super dope, the venue is legendary, and the sound is on point. MAGX: What influences your style and sound?

DA: I tend to pull from my 22 years of experience as a DJ, in addition to 12 years as a producer. Vibes on the floor and in the studio push me every day. MAGX: What do you think of the growing popularity of electronic music? DA: I appreciate any and all forms of electronic music. If it’s produced well, respect. As far as Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto, and Skrillex, they’re a gateway to electronic music. On the opposite end, we have Maceo Plex, Waifs & Strays, and Scuba. Mainstream underground vs. true underground. Without one, the other could not exist. Yin/Yang. MAGX: If you could play anywhere on the globe, where would it be? DA: I’d start in the region of Castilla in Spain. Let’s go with Barcelona. I’m half Spanish and half Irish. My next choice would be to rock a pub in Kinvara, a village located in the south of Ireland. MAGX: What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened at one of your gigs? DA: Red Door, Houston. 2005. Some amateur asks me to “scratch”. Hand motions and everything. I say no. Once I turn around to dig in my crate, he spits on the record that’s playing. Then… he immediately runs to the bar, grabs the tip jar and

smashes it on the ground. Tries to run out with the cash. Turns out homie is rocking a fake military ID. He’s in prison serving a ten year sentence. Idiot. MAGX: If you could produce tracks for any vocalist, who would it be? DA: Charles Bukowski. MAGX: What would be your ultimate Dj setup?

| 8 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

DA: 2 Technics 1200’s. Allen and Heath Xone 92. Traktor using control vinyl, with an X-1 for effects. Monitor on the right. MAGX: Where can we go to learn more about you and your music? DA: Check Beatport under the artist name Daniel Allen for my latest production. Also, DJ mixes and exclusive edits are available for download at soundcloud. com/daniel-allen.

Electronic music has been growing by leaps and bounds in South Texas and so called Dj’s are popping up left and right, but there are a select few who are deserving of the name. One of those is DJ BEETHOVEN. 3 or so years ago, there was a shift that coincided with the arrival of the huge Global Groove electronic spring break shows like TIESTO at South Padre. South Texas was at last ready to support shows that previously were only for big cities like San Antonio, Houston or Dallas. Now 15,000 plus electronic fans eagerly gather to experience the barrage of sounds and lights and dance to the hottest beats. Beethoven is no stranger to huge shows. He performs at them regularly. Anytime a big name DJ is in town, chances are, DJB is on the bill with them.

MAGX: What it like stepping onto a huge stage overlooking a sea of people? DJB: It's like getting a shot of adrenaline to the heart. Everything moves so quick, and is so amazing, you don't realize that your on a stage performing. By the time you know it, its over and you still have the rush! MAGX: What inspired you to start DJing? DJB: The fact that there are endless possibilities of mixing music together is what got me interested. Followed by

people dancing to what I was mixing was another reason why I started. MAGX: Who are your musical influences? DJB: Ludvig Van Beethoven, The School of Vienna, Wilhelm Wagner,Benny Benassi, Caspa, and Ramon Ayala just to name a few. MAGX: I heard you are versed in Music Theory. How does that translate into your music? DJB: Chords, notes, phrases, cadences and form all have to go somewhere if | 12 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

you want people to hear what you hear in your head and heart. People always ask me, "Whats the first thing I should do to be a dj?" I always reply the same, "Start counting music. You will notice that every 16 or 32 beats there will be a change." That's phrasing. MAGX: What style of electronic music would you consider yourself? DJB: Buffet Music, because I play a little bit of everything. MAGX: I'm told you like to trip out the crowd by playing untraditional songs right before you drop a fat beat.

MAGX: What's the strangest combo you've thrown down? DJB: I've played a corrido into a dirty dutch track and also Ramon Ayala's "Tragos Amargos" into LMFAO's "Shots". Watch out for the huapango into electro track I'm working on for the next show! MAGX: What equipment do you perfer to work with? DJB: Pioneer Cdjs are my preference, but I'd rather be playing on some Technics sl-1200 mk2s, they look classy! MAGX: Do you keep up with the latest technology? DJB: Yes I do. But technology is changing rapidly especially in the dj/producer world! All these new gadgets keep coming up, its not even funny. MAGX: Do you think technology will get to the point where all you will need is a smart phone to create music soon? DJB: I think it will, if it already hasn't. I think the closest I've seen is Fl Studio on Iphone. But to mix with a phone, it's already possible. I've dj-ed at a party once with my Android phone and Serato. MAGX: If you weren't a DJ, what kind of music would you be making? DJB: I'd probably be making arraignments for band and orchestra. MAGX: What are some of the big shows you've played? DJB: Ultimate Music Experience 2012, DJ Bl3nd, Winter Wonderland featuring Chuckie and Above and Beyond have been some of the big shows. Actually anything thats (name drop) Global Groove is a BIG show! MAGX: What has been the most memorable?

| 13 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

DJB: U.M.E. 2012 South Padre was the most memorable. The production was awesome! The crowd was amazing! And the vibe of everything was energetic! But performing to some of my best friends at a large event, made it even more memorable! MAGX: Any "star-struck" moments? DJB: I met Benny Benassi about 3 years ago in San Antonio. He's like the daddy of Electro-House. I got on stage while he was playing because I showed the promoter my tattoo of Benny on my arm. I didn't know what to say. All he did was take a picture of my tat and a pic of me and him! I think I said "Your music is awesome!" MAGX: Do you think it's easier to get your music heard now days than it was about 10 years ago? DJB: Of course! There are so many mediums that you can use to promote your music. Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Facebook and other sites on the net! MAGX: What's the craziest thing you've seen at one of your shows? DJB: I think there was an old man stomping to some trance at a show! I was like "whatttttt?!?!?!?!" MAGX: What's your next schedules performance? DJB: My next confirmed scheduled performance will be for Global Groove's RGV Summer Series ft Steve Aoki. Sunday August 19th 2012! I also have a residency at Le Rouge in Downtown Mcallen. MAGX: Where can people get more info on you and your music? DJB: www.soundcloud.com/djbeethoven and www.facebook.com/ djbeethoven22

ERIKA CAVAZOS Age: 26 Hometown: Weslaco, Texas Favorite Food: Anything Mexican! Favorite Drink: Chivas with mineral water Favorite Song: Birthday Cake –Rihanna Favorite Movie: Man on Fire Celebrity Crush: William Levy

Best modeling gig: Before, I would say my best modeling gig was when I was 1 of 2 girls from Texas chosen to be in the Chica Wrangler Calendar. I was flown to Houston for a casting then to Mexico City for the photo shoot. Now I would have to say Model Latina is and may be one the best gigs in my career thus far. How has being Latina influenced your career? I think that right now, being a Latina in the industry is a huge plus. Latinos and Latinas are blooming in all aspects of the industry -- movies, modeling; you pick up a magazine and we are everywhere. We can thank Eva Longoria, Eva Mendes and Sofia Vergara for their accomplishments and opening the doors for Latinos, because it had been really slow for a while in the industry. How was it competing on Model Latina Las Vegas? I loved competing on Model Latina. Being one of the lucky 17 chosen to be a part of the cast and then chosen as the winner was something that words cannot describe. Never knowing what our challenge of the week was going to be was stressful and not being able to communicate with our family made all of us stress out even more. At first it was awkward to have cameras filming us 24/7 but after a few days we forgot all about them. You travel a lot. Do you have a favorite Mexican restaurant that you always find time to squeeze into your busy schedule? Actually, right now in L.A. -- and you're going to laugh at this -- I always go to Chipotle whenever I want Mexican food! I love their chips and salsa, their guacamole ...so, yeah, I always hit up Chipotle. What's in the future for you and your modeling career? I will be traveling to South Beach, Miami this month to do some photo shoots and then I will return back to LA in my pursuit to continue to book work in the industry. I can't give an exact idea of what is to come because in this industry you never know what is in store for you. You just have to be willing to wait and be persistent. Where can fans go to see more of you? facebook.com/pages/Erika-Cavazos/260909617271254 and www.mynuvotv.com/shows/model-latina-las-vegas

MAGX: MUSIC For several years the Alcocer brothers and their band of great musicians, together called The Broken Poetz, have been setting stages ablaze locally and all over Texas with 3 MC's spitting rhymes over a hip hop meets electric guitar style sound. Each MC brings a different style to the mix while guitars wail to fat bass lines and a killer drum beat. Last year, someone took notice that these guys were just too damn good. Now, armed with management, a budget, a new line-up and a renewed vigor, The Broken Poetz are ready to set the world ablaze too.

MAGX: Things have changed since last we caught up with you guys. Tell us what's happened in the last year. John: Well since we've last talked to you we got hooked up with an upstart Record label out of Los Angelas California called Ruby J Entertainment. Its run By Tony and Norma Comella, a great couple that we were introduced to by a mutual friend. They actually came out to a show to check out the band, and they liked what we were doing and they said they would like to work with us, help us out as far as the managing group getting us out there on a tour and get an album recorded. Really, it felt like a blessing because we had been going at it for a while just trying to stay fresh with the sounds and keep jamming whenever we could. We had our ups and downs as far as working with different musicians throughout the years, losing some of the original members, but one thing that always stayed constant in the band were the three vocalist David Alcocer, John Alcocer, and Jason Salas. We never stopped believing in ourselves and what we were about. So we do feel fortunate to have Ruby J in our corner. They believe in the music, and I think you really have to have that from management. I just want to say we have nothing but love for Ruby J. MAGX: How has management changed the Broken Poetz? John: Well, the first thing we've changed is that if you want to go pro you have to have the pro gear, so we definitely upgraded our equipment, so that helps a lot. Also, I feel everything in the band now has more of a structure to it. We're more organized, we know what needs to get done and we're doing it. Also ,what I see different is we're really going at it everyday, preparing ourselves for whatever comes our way. I mean, we practice alot now more than ever. Our motto is: if you do the work in the practice room, then the shows are going to be easy for everyone, less mistakes onstage. Put it this way, having management backing us

has just lit the fire under us. We know we're on the right path. MAGX: You guys have been playing bigger and better shows around Texas. What are some of the places you've been and how have you been received? John: Well, as far as shows we have been playing lately here and there around town. We've performed a couple of opening events at Pharr Events Center for Taking Back Sunday, also we did this year's Never say Never Festival, the Whiz Kalifa show. Other than that we've been keeping busy in the local scene... Simon Sez, Newman's, Cypress, Smokin' Aces, all really great venues for local bands down here. As far as feedback, it's really been great. The crowds are awesome. I definitely think doing the bigger shows really benefits what we're doing. It's just awesome playing to a larger crowd, it's just more energy, more crowd response, it's an awesome feeling. MAGX: Have you guys been in the studio in the last year? John: Definitely. We actually just finished the album which is set to be released by mid-May . The album's name is Dirt Don't Shine. There's a story behind the albums name. We have to thank Russell from Weird Magazine for that. Yeah, we basically lived in the studio for a few months just working everyday. We recorded the album at Block 1 studios with engineers Chava and JJ. We'd like to thank them for all the help with the album, very talented guys out there. MAGX: Who are the new members? John: Well since the last interview we've had a couple of changes in the band. On the bass we have Sammy Watts, killer Bass player. On the drums we have Derek Perez who is really holding it down on the drums. The newest member to the group is lead guitarist, Zeke Flores. All doing a great job. I think the music is | 19 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

sounding better than ever. MAGX: What have they added to the groups dynamics? John: Well as far as the bass lines I think Sammy fits in great. He adds that fat bass sound and really has a groove in his playing style. It's really changed up the whole dynamics of the group. Then you have Derek on the drums, keeps timing great, has a snap to his playing, keeping everyone on the same page. Then you have Zeke on the guitar. Very talented guitarist, giving the group that rock feel. Overall, I think the sound is more polished now. You can hear the lyrics more than ever now and I think that's very important. Lyrics need to be heard. MAGX: For those who may not have seen you guys yet, how would you describe your music? John: I would describe our music as very versatile. You might even catch the Broken Poetz singing a love song one day. You just don't know what to expect from us because we're going to hit you from all angles, hip hop, rock, reggae, pop, a little of everything. We're just not going to hit you with one flava. MAGX: I hear a little bit of Latin flavor in the song Devil on My Back. Will we be hearing more of this? John: Most definitely there will be more songs like that with the Latin flavor. We definitely are proud to be Hispanic and we really want to represent our Mexican roots. MAGX: What's your goal for the Broken Poetz? John: Some of our goals for the Broken Poetz are to get on the road with a major tour and hit the airwaves with our music. We have a good start with that. Every Sunday, 7 to 8 pm on 105.5 the X's Homegrown you can hear some of our tunes. We will definitely continue to write

“It's been a hell of a bumpy road. In this business, you have to have people around you that truly believe in what you are doing or else it will never work!” - John, Broken Poetz

new music and just basically plant a seed wherever we go and share our music to the masses. MAGX: How did you and your brother get your start in music? John: Well, it actually all started in our high school years. We were always into hip hop. In those days you could catch us at a party just rapping away. We had our cousin Grinch Rodriguez from Houston, Tx that inspired us a lot. He was doing his thing. Also, we started going to some shows down here. I'm sure you heard of Bread 8, Kactus, led by Kido who's now got his band Personal Use. Yeah, all of that definitely got us thinking about putting a band of our own together. I would say it got serious when my brother (David Alcocer) learned how to play the guitar and keyboard. It just opened up the doors to being able to write original music and basically we've never looked back. MAGX: I remember watching you guys back in 2000 at a bar called Excalibur in Palmview, TX and being blown away. You guys were under

the name UNIKRON at the time, different lineup, but I knew you guys had that "thing", that spark. Was it a bumpy road to get to this point in your music careers 12 years later? John: Actually, I would say Unikron was the seed that was planted what has become the Broken Poetz. It's been a hell of a bumpy road in this business. You have to have people around you that truly believe in what your doing or else it will never work. we had the misfortune of working with people that didn't believe in what we believed in you can only have one chief in a group and alot of times you have the indians wanting to be the chief you cant have six chiefs it doesn't work that way .But you know what i never stopped believing in what we do and thats why were still standing if you choose to leave this band don't expect it to fall apart cause i wont let it you know why cause I BELIEVE….lol MAGX: What are the Broken Poetz' musical influences?

| 20 |

MAGX: SOUTH TEXAS ENTERTAINMENT MAG

John: Theres so many different influences... Kiss, Zeppelin, The Beatles, Elvis, old school hip hop, the list can go on forever. We definitely are fans of all types of music but most importantly to us, we try not to sound like any of them. MAGX: Are you guys performing in South Texas anytime soon? John: We have a couple of shows at Simon Sez this month, May 10th and 24th before we hit the road for some out of town gigs. We definitely will keep you posted! MAGX: Where can people get more info and listen to some Broken Poetz jams on the web? John: Facebook, Youtube, Brokenpoetz.com, soundcloud, Itunes, Rhapsody, 105.5 the X every Sunday 7 to 8, hell just google the Broken Poetz, you'll find us. Before we go, we would just like to thank Magazine X for always supporting the Broken Poetz and the local music scene throughout the years. Thanks!

rich, Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Shannon Larkin, Phil Collins, Tony Royster Jr., Aquiles Prietser, Mike Portnoy, Vinny Paul, and Ian Paice to name just a few.

MAGX: When did you guys start playing as Sky Tree?

MAGX: What does Sky Tree sound like?

Raul: I actually did Sky Tree as a solo project, which started in 2006. I released a six song demo in late 2008 on iTunes. In March of 2011, Vee Rubio and I got together and started going over some of the songs I had written. We later recruited Rick Reyna to play bass for us. We had no expectations when we began this band, but it quickly started taking off for all of us. MAGX: Which musicians inspire you guys to make music? Raul: That's a hard question. My all-time favorite band has always been Metallica. But the bands that inspire me the most are bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Tool. Rick: I’m old school rock. Back in the day I would listen to a lot of Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden, but for a while I was also listening to green day, nofx and bad religion. Now u would probably hear me jamming to Breaking Benjamin or some Shinedown. Vee: As a drummer I would have to say Lars Ul-

Raul: I've heard a lot of people say we remind them of Tool, but other bands such as Deftones, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin and Godsmack have also been mentioned. I'd like to think we are a progressive hard rock band that incorporates heavy guitars, with some great bass lines, hard hitting drums and melodic vocals. MAGX: How was playing at SXSW? Raul: SXSW was an amazing experience for me. I had never attended and was simply blown away by the amount of talent that was out there. We're already booked for next year so we can't wait to do it again. MAGX: What's the craziest thing that's ever happened to you guys during a show? Raul: We played the first annual Rock-It on Campus at Texas A&M Kingsville and the mic shocked me so bad it caused my effects pedal to restart. I'm guessing the surge went through my body down to my foot. MAGX: Where is your favorite place to play? Raul: I think each place we've played at has

| 22 |

been pretty good so far. As far as sound quality goes, Zombies in San Antonio was the best. Rick: I don't have a "favorite" place. Just as long as we are playing is what matters. Vee: So far I’d have to say Smokin' Aces. MAGX: You guys are going to have a CD release soon, tell us about your new album. Raul: Our upcoming CD has been inspired by so many things that have happened in my life personally. Five of the songs on there were part of the six I released when Sky Tree was just a solo project. As a band, we've written five more songs that each one of us put our stamp on. The song that means the most to me is “Gone So Far”. Vee and I wrote those lyrics about losing two people we loved. I lost my mom in June and he lost his wife in September. Every time I play that song I get very emotional as does he. “The Dawn” is probably my favorite song. It’s about having another chance to make things right with each new day. Very powerful song. MAGX: Where can fans go to hear your music and learn more about you?
