HEAVIER THAN YOU! With their first official show in midNovember of last year, the Weslacobased hardcore band Walk The Graves have accomplished more than they had ever hoped in the past four months. The 4-piece, which consists of Chris (vocals), Oliver (guitar), Dave-o (bass/backup vocals) and John-o (drums), have already begun laying the groundwork for building a loyal fan base. They have not limited themselves to the cities they play in, and in the last four months have played shows in Brownsville, San Benito, Harlingen, and McAllen among other cities, often hitting each place 2-3 times a month. Another
key to building their reputation is that they play to whoever will watch them. As a result, they have been gaining fans and respect from not just the hardcore scene, but also the metal scene, the punk scene and anyone in between. They have also gained recognition and praise from bands from Florida and New York, which whom they opened for this past February here in the valley. By the looks of things, these guys are just getting started. MX: How’d you guys get together? WTG: Oliver, Dave-o and I are all from Weslaco. We were in a short-
lived hardcore band last year, and when that fizzled out we all knew we wanted to keep working together and making music. We were motivated, but we weren’t sure if we were going to be able to keep this stuff up much longer. That’s when Chris came into the picture. He’s from Pharr and had also played around the scene in different bands. I saw him sing one time at a show, and as cheesy as it sounds, I asked him if he would be interested in singing for us. He said yes and since then we haven’t looked back. MX: How do you all write your music? WTG: The music we make is extremely easy, but that works great because we’re not trying to be the most flashy and technical band out there. We play hardcore, and that style is so rhythm-based that we don’t need to be great
musicans. We had one goal in mind when we formed Walk The Graves, and that was to be one of the heaviest bands playing right now. So basically one of us will come up with a verse riff or a breakdown, and we’ll keep adding or taking away from that until it’s ready. MX: What category would you classify yourselves as? WTG: We’re not going to lie, we are a hardcore band and that’s all we want to be. But, growing up in the valley you’re introduced to metal from the start. I think this has really had an impact on our sound and how we write our music. All of us listened to metal before we were even introduced to hardcore, and we still do. Let’s just say we’re metal enough to get the tough guys moshing, but I’ve also seen punkers going off to our stuff as well. MX: What is the significance
behind the name Walk The Graves? WTG: We had this notepad and we were just writing everything we could think of in there, so long as it caught our attention or sounded cool. We wanted something dark, but we didn’t want to come off as whiny or anything like that. This name sounded strong, but real. MX: What kind of reactions do you guys get in different parts of the valley? WTG: Well, Harlingen is definitely one of the most metal cities out there, so when we first played there we felt really out of place. But we started playing that show and ended up getting everyone’s attention. It was great. Brownsville actually had a bit more of a hardcore thing going on, because we see a lot of dancing every time we go there. Everyone reacts differently, I
guess, but in the end we play our hearts out and so far have been winning people over, wherever they’re from. MX: What does Walk The Graves have cooking this month? WTG: March is definitely looking to be a busy month, which is totally a good thing for us. Actually, let me just throw some promos out there really quick: March 10 we’ll be playing at the VFW in McAllen alongside the rest of the South Texas Hardcore family and Flawless Victory from Laredo. March 12 we’ll be playing Club Onyx opening up for California’s own HOODS. And on the 13 we’re going to be part of some huge all day music festival at Palmer Pavilion in McAllen. First off, who is this Dj Dani Garza? He is a man of music. Music is in his blood and music is what powers his soul to live day by day. If he doesn’t listen to music during the day, he would go crazy. Enough of the first person talk let me explain who I am. I got started into music at a very young age.
Born in San Antonio, and into an Air Force family. I was 4 years old when my father put a guitar into my hands. From that point on I was hooked . My parents would play rock, disco, Motown, oldies, and lots of country-western, and Tejano. When I was 6 years old, my family moved to McAllen, where I went to Garza Elementary and Morris Junior High. During my freshman year at Sharyland , I bought a tape that was an import from Germany on the ZYX label showcasing the upcoming dance music of Europe. I was hooked. The huge bass beats and the massive synths made my body feel energized. “What was this music I was listening to? “I wanted to here more!” So it is here that my Dj inspiration started. In ’92 I bought the House Party IV compilation by Arcade Record. In my head, this was the future of music, this is what I liked, and this is the music I wanted to make. I soon chose a career-changing path and joined the Air Force in ’96 after 2 years at UTPA. It was in the military that my music spread amongst the masses thanks to my military relocations across the country. In California, I got heavily into spinning hardcore/hard house music on my Technic 1200’s and Pioneer DJM mixer. I went under the name Dj Dani Kaos for a short while but soon changed to Dj Wicked and got to play in Hollywood’s The Palace, The Dome, Viper Room and The Roxbury. This was my big break. It was also here that I played several house parties in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Ventura. played at during Rave on the Rocks for 20,000 people back in 1998. Under the name of Dj Morbid, I produced my own cd entitled “The Universal Language” in 1999, which was a hard-hitting mix cd of hardcore/acid music. This cd sold out in the Rocky Mountain region with over 1,000 units sold.
djs. In 1997, I got stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming , where I was co-owner of Club 218. We would have around 500-700 people on our event nights, which included touring bands on Fridays and touring djs on Saturdays. I built a studio and was soon producing music and mastering my own creations. I started to play big regional raves and clubs with 8,000-15,000 ravers. I spun with some of the best in the industry including local dj celebrity, Keoki, Tiesto, Christopher Lawrence, Paul Van Dyk, Bad Boy Bill, Hellfish, Delta 9, D.O.A., Deadly Buddha, Frankie Bones, Dj Rap, Aphrodite, The Poundboys, Paul Elstak, Neophyte, and many more. Denver had a great dj scene and one of the top club/nightlife scenes in the world. Besides raves, I did residencies at my own club in Cheyenne as well as the Colorado clubs, Suite 152, Washington’s, Synergy, The Hill in Boulder, Vinyl, Deadbeat Club, Tracks 2000, and the world wide known Denver club, The Church. Red Rocks had to be the most amazing venue I have ever
In 2000 I relocated to Denver and I produced “Killing Starz” under the name of Astral Factory which consisted of 14 tracks of my own material. This is where my persona took on two forms. One was Dj Dani Garza the acid/trance dj and the other was Dj Morbid the hardcore/gabber dj. I distributed this independently to djs and labels around the world and it was released on Astralmedia Records, Morbid Records, and Fallen Demon Records. The album also gained the #1 position on MP3.com for several weeks and remained in the Top 25. In 2002, as Dj Morbid I released, “Purgatory in the Rockies” which was a mix cd of hard acid, hard drum n’ bass and hardcore music clocking in at 70 minutes under Morbid Records. In 2004, as Dj Dani Garza I released, “Music for the Masses” on Astralmedia Records. This album gained top reviews around the club underground and earned top spots on several dance charts. On Download.com, I became the #1 downloaded acid dj worldwide and was among the Top 50 djs worldwide for any genre of dance
music thanks to the hits “Destroy!”, “Time Is Running Out”, and “The Blackhole”. In 2005, I came out with an E.P. entitled “Hard Motherfucker” which gained huge attention in the hardcore scene especially in Western Europe. I am happy to say that my music is being spun all over the world, like big festivals such as Mysteryland, Thunderdome, and Sensation Black in the Netherlands by some of the best djs out there including those on the ID&T label Thunderdome. I am currently working on my next self produced opus entitled, “The Journey” which is more like a cosmic adventure through space showcasing a melting pot of genres mixed into a batch that I call Tranacid. Currently the singles from the album, “Susan’s Solaris” and “Time In Neptune” have caught the attention of several djs who are currently remixing the songs for compilation albums. I am also featured on a storm chasing dvd as well as several extreme snowboard/ski videos due out in 2006. Several of my songs can be heard over the internet and on several radio stations across the globe including satellite radio. I am currently using a Dell Dimension 8200 modified desktop with Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Acid Pro, Sound Forge, Fruity Loops, 2 Technics M3D’s turntables, Pioneer DJM 600 mixer, Yamaha Dj Synthesizer, a Jackson
custom built guitar, GT5 effects processor, and several modules from Moog. The most important thing is that I believe you should always give back to music what music has given to you. Thus, I am have come back home to the Rio Grande Valley after a 10-year absence. Be on the lookout for Dani Garza to invade a club or dj event near you in the very near future! Don’t freak out when I break out an electronic violin or guitar during my set and start performing to the music. It is all about showmanship and I feel that the audience should get a show they deserve. MySpace has been a huge help in my success and I urge any musician who isn’t on MySpace to get a page up quickly. In the past month, I have been to several shows in McAllen at Mint, Onyx, and the VFW.Music is like family and each member is like a note. Every once in awhile you will strike a bad chord but most of the time you ARE the creation of something wonderful…. music!

Hello everyone, it’s me again Gamer Bob with your monthly look at video games. This month I am going to talk about the latest craze taking the nation by storm. I’m talking about the latest dance platform video gamest. Unfortunately these games have been out for more then a decade and the majority of us are barely figuring them out. These games are designed to help build coordination and rhythm and help the game players keep in shape. I have tried these and believe me I have gotten quite good. Of course I have met other players who would in fact make me look like a beginner. A few of the more famous games are DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and Pump it Up. DDR in my eyes was the basis of the dance platform genre. This game has four directional arrows that you need to remember. Knowing that, the music has a set of choreographed steps that you must follow in order and precision in order to get to the next level. The music on this game is set to Techno & House music like “Blow My Whistle” or “I like to move it.” With songs like that, how can you not get your groove on. “Pump it Up” in my eyes is as bit more advanced. Point being is that this game has five directional arrows, unlike DDR which has four. This game also requires the player to perform more hip rotations and move in circular directions. The music from this game revolves around Korean POP music and some POP from the US, plus a fi ne line of classical music. Fun Fact: Did you that there is a school district somewhere up north that is doing all they can to get these games in their Physical Education Lesson plans (goes to see how much they want the youth to be more active). These games are not really hard to fi nd. All you need to do is go to your local video arcade and I am sure that you will fi nd it there. You can also fi nd these game at other places like Gamestop, Gamecrazy, ECT for your home platform.

ately, it seems, I have been inspired by the most random things, and it’s mostly been outside the musical realm, which is different for me. One of those things is what I’m writing about today, this amazing documetary that I discovered, um, for the second time. So, one of my friends, who is a writer, called me one day and felt the need to leave a rather manic, rambling message on my phone saying I had to see this movie called Stone Reader, that, and I’m paraphrasing here, it was the best movie he’d ever seen in his whole entire life. Although I usually trust this friend’s judgement in these matters, I had reservations about such an absolute statement. I went to do my research at imbd.com, where I learned that this film was about You are on page 15 • Magxonline.com
an unknown author who had published one masterpiece in the eary 1970’s, never to be heard from again. Great. A movie about a writer. Figures that this recommendation would come from someone who is a writer. That would kind of be like my husband telling me to go see a documentary about some prodigy golfer that fell off the map after winning one Masters tournament twenty years ago. Why would I care? But, I do love to read, and I guess one could say that I write every once in awhile, so maybe I could actually relate to, or at the very least, appreciate, something this film had to offer. I go to the video store on a rainy day, one of those perfect moviewatching days, in search of the Stone Reader, which was easier to find than I expected. As I read the movie jacket blurb, it hits me. I realize that I know this film, or at least, I know of it. How could I forget something I saw every day and was intrigued by for months and months? Let me explain. This film was probably the most moving piece of cinema I’ve seen. Another absolute statement, but it’s ture. Its narrator, writer, and creator, Mark Moskowitz, is on a mission to find Dow Mossman, the
author of a book he read and carried with him since 1972. It was called The Stones of Summer. When it hit the shelves, it got major press and was reviewed in the New York Times as being the next coming of age novel of the century, the next Catcher in the Rye. But in 1998, Moskowitz couldn’t find a copy of the book or even any bookstore employee who had heard of Dow Mossman. Over a period of years, and through a series of fortunate and unfortunate events, Moskowitz finds Mossman. On the way he speaks to literary giants, people who knew Mossman, people who worked with the publishing company at the time The Stones of Summer was published, and the very person who wrote the glowing review in the New York Times in 1972. Even for non-book lovers, this movie strikes a chord. It speaks to the human spirit. Though you’ve never heard of it before now, watching Stone Reader you come to love Mossman and his book. You find yourself understanding Moskiwitz’s insatialble and offbeat quest to find this man. I know, I’m getting mushy, but I haven’t even told you the best part. Mossman’s novel had been out of print for the better part of twenty years. After this documentary was released, it received much
critical acclaim at all the right film festivals, and attracted the attention of many people, one of those being the CEO of Barnes & Noble, Steve Riggio. After losing the winning bid of a ridiculous amount of money for the last hardcover copy of The Stones of Summer on an auction on e-bay, Mr. Riggio decided he needed to single-handedly resurrect and reprint this quirky novel so that a whole new generation could get involved. That’s why I’ve seen this story before. I saw it every day at work, and the story was so intersting that I vowed I would read this book. Well, that hasn’t happened yet, but Stone Reader was so compelling that it has strengthened my resolve. Coming to an issue in the near future....review of The Stones of Summer....

Harry Potter: The Order Of The Phoenix On 2007 the fifth installment of J.K. Rowling’s Potter series will make it’s way to theatres world wide. “Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix”. This installment will feature of course “the return of he who cannot be named” , the prophecy concerning Potter and Longbottom, and of course the death of a major character. Who dies ? Can’t tell you, go watch the movie, or better yet go read the book. All the regular cast from the fourth film are back as well as some new faces. The Dursleys which were not in the last film, will return for the next film. Gary Oldman is in talks to return as Sirius Black, although seeing Oldman as Black again would be fantastic, those of you that have read the book know his ultimate fate.

Originally to be a summer 2006, it will now be moved over to a summer 2007 release date. Rodriguez, which will be onboard for SC2 is finishing up a horror flick with Quentin Tarrantino called “GRIND HOUSE” in his hometown of Austin, Texas. Sin City 2 will be again a mix a different books by Miller, with some of the characters coming back from the first film.
Back In Black SPIDERMAN 3 has added yet another character to the cast. Gwen Stacy will be played by Bryce Dallas Howard, (Ivy Walker The Village). Not much has been released on Howard’s character, but those of us who have read the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN know the fate of this young lady. The BIG, HUGE news is the picture of Spiderman that you are looking at. It’s not a black and white photo, IT’S THE BLACK COSTUME!
