RUSSO’S NEW YORK PIZZERIA 7017 N 10th St # R, McAllen, TX (956) 686-5522 This month, we went to Russo’s New York Pizzeria at 7017 North 10th St. in McAllen and were treated to a tour of their amazingly delicious dishes. Russo’s is definitely more than just awesome pizza! The Arrival: Russo’s New York Pizzeria is located near the intersection of 10th Street and Trenton in McAllen. We were greeted at the door by manager Dustin Gonzalez, who quickly seated us at our table. Russo’s friendly staff greeted us along the way. As you walk in, you see the giant brick oven used to bake Russo’s signature 28” pizzas. After much deliberation on what delicious plates to order, we decided to check out the bar. The Bar: Our bartender, Justin, served up an awesome array of cocktails from Blue Hawaiians to a Flaming beer/ shot combination we forgot the name of, and even included a few of his own creations. All sorts of colored shots & drinks were on display. One bar patron took a 3-round shot that was red, yellow and green like

a traffic light. All the drinks were expertly mixed and were the perfect precursor to the Italian feast we were about to dine on. The basketball game was on the huge HD TV at the bar, and several people were already there having a great time. You could tell they were regulars, which is a testament to Justin’s superb bartending skills and the comfortable environment. After a few drinks, our server escorted us to our table where our feast was laid out before us. The Food: Before this visit, we had only tried Russo’s famous New York Style brick oven baked pizza. Boy were we in for a treat. Our eyes grew wide as we looked at all the food before us. We started off with a delicious appetizer, Roasted Prosciutto, which is grilled fresh mozzarella cheese wrapped with basil and prosciutto di parma. Next we sampled their beautifully arranged Antipasto Salad, romaine lettuce topped with prosciutto, genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, fresh mozzarella, mortadella ham and fresh vegetables served with a balsamic vinaigrette, rolled up slices of meats

and cheeses laid on a fresh, tasty salad with black olives in the center. We also got to taste their mouth-watering Mediterranean Salad; romaine lettuce, garden vegetables, pine nuts, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and gorgonzola cheese drizzled with a tasty balsamic house dressing. These salads were anything but boring. So many toppings and so many flavors, and we hadn’t even gottten to the main courses yet. After the salads, we started in on one of their hot, delicious Stomboli calzones, stuffed with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, black olives,
green bell peppers, melted mozzarella and marinara sauce. MAGX can eat like there is no tomorrow, but even we were running out of room by this point. Everything was so delicious that it would have been a sin to leave all this delicious food behind so we moved on, Their Chicken Portobello Pizzotto, a tasty sandwich with fresh grilled chicken, sautéed spinach and my favorite type of mushrooms, portobellos with melted mozzarella between Pizzotto bread; a thin and crispy Italian flatbread, was a real treat. Spaghetti Frutti di Mari was next on the
menu, spaghetti with fresh clams, mussels, calamari and garlic with a spicy marinara sauce. While everything was hot, fresh and amazing, the Chicken Picatta Pasta; fresh grilled chicken sautéed with sun-dried tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, and capers tossed with fettuccini pasta in a tangy lemon white wine sauce was unbelievably delicious. Finally, we moved on to their massive 28” New York Village Brick Oven Pizza, topped with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, black olives, bell peppers, Canadian bacon hamburger and mozzarella over their tangy pizza sauce. All of their Specialty Pizzas are hand tossed and baked to perfection in their huge brick oven. One slice each and that
was all we could eat. Each slice was about the size of 3 or 4 regular sized pizza slices. Generous amounts of fresh ingredients and melted cheese topped these gigantic slices. This place is Italian Heaven! The Verdict: Russo’s New York Pizzeria is amazing! From the exquisitely prepared dishes and delicious pizza to the friendly atmosphere and perfectly prepared drinks, Russo’s delivered an excellent dining experience. Next time you are craving fresh Italian food, we recommend you come to Russo’s. Don’t forget to leave room for their delicious deserts! We took ours to go!

Black Tora has been one of the stand-out bands in South Texas for some time now. Few bands have the dedication and showmanship that these boys have and they make every show entertaining. With all their hard work, they have been able to tour the US, play regulary in some of Hollywood’s famous music venues, as well a play festivals for thousands of concert-goers. We had a chat with “Razor Dave” Benitez, guitarist extraordinaire for the 3-piece band about what’s happening woth the band, new members, and their upcoming performance at the huge rock festival, ROCKLAHOMA, featuring huge names like Whitesnake, Motley Crue, Skillet, Staind, Poison and many more. MAGX: It's been a while since we featured you in MAGX, whats going on with Black Tora this year? RAZOR DAVE: Thanks for having us Ramsey! Alot has happened since the last time. First off, Black Tora is now working with Red Rockett Entertainment which is the management that works with Bobaflex, Lazarus A.D. and other well known bands. Other than that, its the same story, touring, recording, and just trying to stay alive in this crap biz! MAGX: You guys are easily one of the most accomplished bands here in the Valley, but for those who may not be familiar with you guys, tell us about how you and (vocalist) Chris started and how that led to

the formation of Black Tora. RAZOR DAVE: Thanks, me and my brother have been working together (sorry for him) for years, and this was just supposed to be a kinda one off thing, but the motives were sincere and, one thing led to another. When rock is in your blood, its just in the blood! MAGX: We hear you guys are playing Rocklahoma again. That's an honor that no other valley band can claim.How did that come about and what big names are you sharing the stage with? RAZOR DAVE: Right on, well that’s kind of an intersting story. Back in the Myspace days, when folks were still interested in
bands, haha, we met the owner of Retrospect Records, Sam McCaslin. He has a record label that specializes in Traditional Rock/Metal. He runs one of the stages at the festival, and so this our 3rd time @ Rocklahoma! It’s always a blast. The last 2 years at Rocklahoma have seen some great bands. Queensryche, Tesla, Saxon, Overkill, Extreme, and so many more. This year Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Black Label Society etc, are on the bill. Were just excited to be a part of the history, so to speak! MAGX: What is the reaction and mood of the audience of Rocklahoma during a Black Tora set? RAZOR DAVE: Well, festival crowds

are always the bomb. They "want" to see live music and with us, it’s always been a great response. People are always kinda freaked out to see a younger/newer band just playing real rock n roll/metal. MAGX: You've opened for quite a few national bands which ones have been the most memorable and why? Weve opened for alot of great bands, but to be totally honest, most of them are just into themselves and could care less about the opening bands LOL

MAGX: What's the word on the new album? RAZOR DAVE: Right now things are in buisness mode, and it sucks that it takes so long to get that squared away, but a new album is defentily in the works MAGX: When will you guys be performing closer to home? RAZOR DAVE: As of right now, were doing the Cowboys From Hell Paso, gig @ Smoking Aces (May 14) then a headliner gig with our friends Wildstreet (NY) and Diemonds
(Canada) also at Smokin Aces (June 3) All three bands are playing Rocklahoma as well! MAGX: You have switched from your traditional Fender to a Dean RazorBack any particular reason for the change? RAZOR DAVE: Actually, as of the last year, I went from Fender to Dean back to Fender. I actually was working a Dean endorsement, but after a year of playing, I had to switch back to my roots. In my opinion, Deans cant match the tone of my American Deluxe Strat
MAGX: You've gotten a new drummer since the last time we spoke, Who is he? Where did you find him? RAZOR DAVE: Yes! His name is Nicky X, he’s from Laredo, Tx. We admit we don’t know much about either sport, but we know we have the desire and will power to annihilate KABOOM and plan to be well versed in the ways of both sports. This month we are starting our crash course in PAINTBALL and it’s history, followed by AIRSOFT next month and THE MAGX/ KABOOM CHALLENGE play-by-play in JULY. Both teams will require 1 expert in Paintball and 1 expert in Airsoft to guide them to the winners circle. The history of the paintball gun begins in the early 1970s, when it was used as a tool for marking trees and livestock. Charles Gaines, Hayes Noel and Bob Gurnsey were the first people to think up a new way to use the guns. In 1981, twelve friends played the first recreational paintball game using these industrial paintball guns from the Nelson Paint Company on a field measuring over 100 acres (with no masks or safety equipment!). Long stretches of quiet, with people busy stalking each other and worried about whether they were being stalked, were the norm. One of the first names given to the sport that we now call paintball was “The National Survival Game.” This name reflects the nature of paintball as it was first played – a small
group of friends getting together in the woods to play total elimination games. Sometimes the friends broke into teams to play each other, but most paintball games were “every man for himself.” Over the years, recreational paintball has become more sophisticated. Because more people were playing at one time, using teams became the standards. Different game variations began to form. The most popular paintball game became “capture the flag”, but offensive/defensive scenarios also were popular. As the number of people interested in paintball grew, so did the development of the commercial paintball industry. The first outdoor commercial paintball field opened in 1982. The first indoor field followed in 1984.These
paintball fields allowed large groups of people to meet in one place to play. Paintball business owners were pushed to develop new and exciting ways to keep the players entertained. This further advanced paintball’s history by driving the development of new scenarios and styles of playing. Commercial fields became responsible for one of the biggest innovations in the history of paintball: the “bunker-style” game. Smaller paintball fields let players start the action quicker, instead of having to stalk through the woods for 15 minutes before seeing anyone. Also, players purchased more paintballs when they were in a constant firefight, which made the commercial fields more money.

MAGX: What is it about drum ‘n’ bass and dub step that move you? CRUNKBOT: I tend to gravitate towards the darker end of the dance music spectrum. The soundscape painted by the growling synths and distorted bass lines is where I feel at home.
MAGX: How was the concept of Crunkb0t created? CRUNKBOT: For about 7 years I mixed and produced drum n bass under the moniker “Sevn-S” but gigs were scarce due to the small demand for drum n bass at the time. I started experimenting with different genres such as dub step, electro, fidget house, etc. And over the next few months my gigs doubled. Since the name Sevn-S was synonymous with drum n bass I wanted to come up with a new concept, something fun and catchy to match my new multi-genre style. Originally I was using CB3K which stood for Crunkb0t3000 but that changed once I researched CB3K and realized there is a male chastity device on the market with the same name ha ha! I then shortened it to Crunkb0t.
MAGX: I hear beeps and
of music which still influence my mixes and tracks today. I listen to outlaw country, reggae, rockabilly, punk, hip hop, metal, hardcore, disco, blues, and so much more. I tend to include many elements from other genres of music in my mixes in order to appeal to a wider audience and to keep people from feeling alienated when experiencing a new genre such as dub step, drum n bass, or electro. Although someone may not be a fan of dub step for example they will probably still sing the words to their favorite songs even if they are remixed in dub step form.
MAGX: We’ve jammed out to your mixes on soundcloud and they are office favorites; what helps you choose a set list? CRUNKBOT: Rather than sticking to a particular sound or sub-genre I prefer to take the listener on a musical journey. I may start from the deeper sounds and end on a light note or vice versa, depending on the particular project. Music triggers emotions in people, it moves them in a way that only music can do. It’s those emotions that take the listener down the musical roller coaster.
MAGX: Any plans on pro-

After working with her on a few previous projects we realized we worked great as a team in the studio and decided to start writing music together. Our first track is called “Bass Chingon” - it will be a dub step/trillstep track with a chicano flavor. We hope to have it done by summer.
MAGX: What would be an ideal environment for Crunkb0t to Crunkify a crowd? CRUNKBOT: Any environment! Actually I find that the further off the beaten path a show is, the more responsive the crowd will be during my set. Warehouse parties, skate parks, etc. The more mainstream crowds typically just don’t get as crunk.
MAGX: How Crunk does the B0t like to get?
CRUNKBOT: Crunkb0t knows no limits! I want to see stuff falling off the walls, people going absolutely bananas, and complete dancefloor destruction!!!

What are some of the bigger shows you’ve played? CRUNKBOT: I played a massive warehouse party for the Everydayjunglist.org launch party in
Austin a couple of years ago and this March I had the honor of performing at the Never Say Never Festival which featured Skrillex, Big Chocolate, and a ton of other big name talent. Later that week I actually played at Schlitterbahn South Padre Island with Tiesto. Those are definitely some of the bigger shows I’ve done but nothing beats the intensity of the crowd I had when I played in Little Rock Arkansas last year, the energy was amazing - I could feel the entire venue pulse with every beat of my mix.
MAGX: Where can people catch you in action? CRUNKBOT: All over! I have gigs booked right now in Mcallen, Brownsville, Austin, San Antonio, and Denver Colorado. I have a Wednesday residency at Cine El Rey in downtown Mcallen called “Wednesday Beatdown” as well.
