Aboutt editor in chief &art director

features editor & photographer

Kate has had her fair share of experimenting in different disciplines but a creative future seemed set in stone from an early age. Her indefatigable artistic talent continued to surface and when she returned to New Zealand after years travelling, she bought her first computer. Producing her own wedding invitation led to the opening of her business, Ruby & Willow Design Studio. Building on the immense success of her Magnolia Rouge blog, Kate as the editor in chief of {MAG}rouge is the key to the uncompromising aesthetic and inspiration of the magazine.

After gaining qualifications in History Jasmine took up an IT career, though she never forgot her youthful dreams of winning amateur photo competitions. Finally she understood her true calling: photography and art. Having always had a combined passion for photography with her dear friend Hannah, from their days in the art room at high school, they founded Sutherland Kovach Studio, and the rest is history! Their mission is to create a beautiful sweet world through their images. Jasmine is also crazy about her small daughter and the domestic arts.

THANK YOU TO THESE FABULOUS PHOTOGRAPHERS FOR THEIR BEAUTIFUL REAL WEDDINGS!

Hannah’s interest in photography dates back to her childhood when at an early age she became obsessed with discovering how the 3D world could be transferred to paper through a magic box. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam she worked in the BBC’s Picture Publicity Dept and on the set of Harry Potter 6 in the photography department. In 2008 she returned home and joined forces with her one of her oldest, dearest and most visionary friends Jasmine, in the successful enterprise of Sutherland Kovach Studio.

Judit started her adult life as an economist and marketer in her home country of Hungary. After marrying and having two beautiful girls, she travelled the world, finally stopping at the farthest corner of it in a place called New Zealand. It was here where she finally realized that her best recipe for success would be her culinary skills, sweet tooth, art and craft and marketing talent, and went on to form her business, Artisan Cakes. She still delights clients worldwide, this time not with her incisive ad campaigns but delicious treats from her cake kitchen.

My name is Rebecca. I fell in love with photography at 12 years old when my father gave me a Pentax film camera and helped me set up a makeshift light room in our attic. A lot has changed in photography since those days but I still love the magic of working with film as well as exploring the constant developments in digital photography. I work primarily with natural light and on location. I strive to capture portraits that are flooded with light and love.

Three years ago we met and fell in love while both studying at university in Wellington, New Zealand. We got married two years later while our passion for creative photography grew and grew. We’ve come to appreciate the fine art of photography. Portraiture is our first-love. Whether that be weddings, engagements, lifestyle, fashion, or personal portraits. Love is enigma, Love is divine, Love is the cure, but the infection to those blind. Love is pure, love is undefined, Love is beyond just a feeling, surely love is undermined. Love is many heart beats, but its rhythm the same, For love is the light through dark streets, it has no image or name. Love is bright, love is light, Love is just, love is life. Love helps the weak, love contains the spirit, Love embellishes the person, for love is coherent. Love is the problem, yet it is also the solution. A long time ago, I heard love is the filter to its own pollution. They say, love is confusing, love is illusive, Love is a lame, where as lust is amusing. They say, love is a traitor, love is addiction. How can love heal the heart, but still cause the affliction? They say, love is a dream, so I stay in wonder,

CARNIVAL affair CALAMIGOS RANCH | MALIBU PHOTOGRAPHY BY TANJA LIPPERT

JANE&STEVE

met for the very first time at her sister's wedding in San Miguel, California. Even though her sister had warned Steve to stay away from Jane, the moment they met “they were instantly glued at the hip”! Sometimes sisters don`t always know best! While Jane was in Honolulu for clinical rotation, Steve had come out to visit her, which made Jane think that a proposal might be imminent. This is how Jane describes it: "We were celebrating our one and a half year anniversary at the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki when I flat out asked him “if” he was going to propose to me. Ok, ok, there may have been liquid courage involved, compliments of thewine and champagne. He played it off like he knew I would expect it so he told me he was sorry it wasn’t going to happen out there. He basically got me so worked up I was ready to leave the restaurant early in tears. Then he said he had to go get a toothpick (when, in reality, he went to polish the ring) and ended up proposing to me. He was planning on doing it during a hike or some other romantic time but I just expedited the process!"

Their vision for their big day was rustic, vintage and whimsical. Calamigos Ranch had fulfilled all their expectations for a fun, relaxed, outdoor place where “you are just able to stop for a moment and breathe in life.

"My favourite moment was getting to see my husband before the ceremony. Due to lighting and time constraints, Tanja scheduled a private meeting for us prior to saying our "I Do's". It wasn't rushed and we got to marvel at each other."

Festival Jane & Steve wish to visit: St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, Ireland

WHILE JANE FOCUSED

her efforts on the dress, cake and cowboy boots her piece of advice for brides is a very clever one: “Make a vision board. It is so easy to get too many themes, colors, or ideas going which can make the planning daunting. If you just start cutting pictures out of magazines and create a vision board it helps you stayed focused. Plus, it assists the cake decorators and wedding designers in understanding your vision for the day. Tanja Lippert actually shared this knowledge with me and I am so thankful for it!

interView with Kate MacPherson Here at {MAG}rouge, we are big fans of our fellow countrywoman, Kate Macpherson, a photographer who hails from Wellington. Her work has been featured in several well-known blogs and wedding magazines and we never fail to oooh and aaah when her beautiful pictures land in our inbox. We're thrilled to have her on board and, without further ado, present our {MAG}rouge Q&A with Kate MacPherson! MR: When you were a child, what did you want to be? KM: A gymnast. Until I was about eleven and realised it wasn't really gonna work out. MR: Where did you get your start in photography? Did you always know you would pursue a creative career? KM: When I was about 25. I absolutely had no idea I was going to be a photographer before this time. I liked photography and even did a few weekend courses when I was younger but never considered it as a career until I returned to NZ from travelling in my mid-twenties. I studied psychology and PhysEd at university so clearly was a bit confused about what direction I should take. Luckily it all fell into place when I decided to study photography. MR: What do you like about working for yourself? KM: Freedom. MR: What is your favourite thing about shooting weddings? KM:: The documentary aspect. I never really wanted to photograph weddings as a photography student but then it seemed the obvious choice when I realised I could take a more 'documentary' approach. Not many other types of photography have give me this much 'story-telling' freedom. MR: Who is your favourite photographer? Who is your favourite artist? KM: Photographers: Henri Cartier-Bresson and Eliot Erwitt. I love black and white street photography that combines beautiful design and a decisive moment. Artist: Flox (http://www.flox.co.nz).

Top photo of Eiffel Tower; Kate MacPherson, bottom two; Henri Cartier-Bresson

MR: Where do you draw your inspiration from? KM: All sorts of things. I love films that have a real 'feeling' that is often undefinable. Right at this moment though I am trying to let go of some thoughts around inspiration as I think if I try too hard it will be obvious. It's forever evolving, this creative inspiration thing... I'm just learning as I go and trying not to take it too seriously. I don't have the answers... in fact there may be no answers. How's that for a vague and rambling answer? MR: If you weren't a photographer, what would you be? KM: Hmmm, I liked the psychology of design when I was at uni so perhaps something along those lines? MR: Besides photography, what are your other passions? KM: I'm trying to learn video right now...not to shoot weddings but for personal projects. I also love gardening but it has been a lot of trial and error. I love watching wee seeds sprout up, it always amazes me! MR: Do you enjoy travelling, and what is the best place you have travelled to? KM: I love travelling. Africa has been a highlight; I travelled through a few African countries with my sister a number of years ago now. It was magic. As a photographer my favourite city to be in is Paris. I love it's designand the way they've used space. The light was pretty nice when I was there too. MR: Describe a perfect day in the life of Kate Macpherson! KM: It's summer, first up...make coffee, have something delicious for breakfast...read the paper. Hang out in the garden for a while. Then head off to photograph....light is perfect. Drinks, hanging with friends. Pretty simple really, sounds a bit cheesy but that's a pretty nice day in my world.

Thank you, Kate!

CABO SAN LUCAS | MEXICO PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIONA ANDERSEN

When it came to wedding planning, this couple had three main priorities that they tailored their budget to: throwing an awesome party for their amazing friends and family; having Fiona Andersen as their photographer, and an incredible venue. Read on and you’ll see they achieved all three.

The Meeting

The Proposal

The Location

Paula and Alex met in a bar in London, when her friend decided to play cupid for the night, dragging the poor guy onto the dance floor with their group of girls. If you ask Alex, he will say he wooed Paula with his dance moves, which were impossible to resist. Paula says “for those who have witnessed these ‘dance moves’, they know this to be a blatant lie!” They soon worked out that they had mutual friends, so it seems they were always destined to meet at some point.

The friend’s instincts proved to be right as a couple of years later, in the final days of a trip to New York City, they got engaged. After spending the afternoon at the Empire Hotel sipping cocktails, followed by a beautiful dinner in a really cute Italian Restaurant, Alex insisted they take a carriage ride. “Central Park was so still and quiet that it felt like we were the only ones there, and Alex got down on one knee in the horse drawn carriage and proposed to me.”

With Alex hailing from the United States, and Paula from New Zealand, they had anticipated it would be difficult to decide on a location. Paula says: “After much discussion, we decided to pick somewhere easy for Alex’s family to get to and somewhere warm for all of our guests coming from New Zealand. Cabo San Lucas, just felt like a fun, tropical place, with an easy going feel that we wanted for our big day.” The traditional Mexican feel of the Sheraton ticked all the boxes.

Festival Paula & Alex wish to visit: Coachella, California

What made their wedding wonderful was the location (Cabo San Lucas is their new favourite place in the world!), the post wedding pool party that went until 4am (tequila laybacks and all!), their amazing photographer Fiona, who was an absolute hit at the wedding, and all of the amazing speeches from their families and friends. Paula and Alex describe it as the best day ever!

For other couples considering a destination wedding, Paula and Alex can’t recommend them highly enough. “Although having our wedding so far away from both of our family homes meant that a lot of people who are important to us couldn’t make it, we ended up with 40 guests who all stayed for between four days and four weeks and made our wedding into a holiday! This meant we had the luxury of spending a lot of time with our guests at the rehearsal dinner, the wedding day and the days before and after. We are so lucky to have had this time and it made our holiday so special.”

“My favourite moment of the day was standing in front of our loved ones, saying our vows. My Dad translated for us, as the Mexican officiant has to say all of the vows in Spanish. It was really special being able to have my dad play such an important part in our day and to stand with us when we said our vows.

AN AUSTRALIAN LOVEFEST - L

LAURA & ALEX

ST ALBANS | AUSTRALIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALMA PHOTOGRAPHY

hen Alex and Laura decided on the location for their wedding, they dubbed it ‘Lovestock’. “We’re old souls, so it seemed natural to want a huge celebration in the middle of nowhere - much like a festival. It was all about the people we loved and making it an enjoyable experience for them. Nature, good food and wine, music, warmth, humor, love for the olden days - these things inspired us definitely, but we were (and still are) most inspired by the people in our lives.”

A very wise friend of the couple ad wanted - so they did. Alex and La them in every way. “We looked to lead and went from there. Everything

dvised them to do exactly what they aura’s wedding was a reflection of ourselves and the kind of life we g felt very genuine and very honest.

Alex and Laura describe the day as “pure magic”. For Laura, the most memorable moment was walking up to meet Alex at the altar. “Both of my parents were on either side of me, and as we moved closer it was such an amazing feeling. The band were playing my song, the weather was spectacular, the space looked so beautiful, and everyone was just so happy and full of love. It was overwhelmingly powerful.”

Alex shares this moment from the ceremony: “Laura and I were placing the rings on each others fingers. Laura was struggling to get mine on, and there was a bit of laughter from the crowd. Next thing you know about 20 or so Kookaburras in the trees above us joined in and wouldn’t stop laughing! This made the crowd laugh more and so there was a chorus of laughter all round. We felt like we had the whole universe’s blessiing at that point.”

Credits

The couple advise others to go with the flow, to not get bogged down in details, and to trust that everything will work out. Choose your vendors wisely, be flexible, and ultimately, “go gently. With every wedding, something doesn’t go according to plan. But just be grateful that so many things do and enjoy those moments as they are the ones that you will remember.”

Teresa & Justin CHURCH ESTATE VINEYARD | MALIBU PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRAEDON FLYNN

This beautiful wedding, photographed by the talented Braedon Flynn, was held at Church Estate Vineyard. Church Estate is a boutique vineyard located in Malibu Wine Country, home to over 50 vineyards both large and small. Just off the Pacific Coast Highway, this is a unique region close to Los Angeles and yet perfectly secluded.

A team of amazing vendors brought this gorgeous event to fruition. The flowers are by Mindy Rice Floral Design Mindy is a Californian herself whose work has graced the pages of many a magazine. Teresa’s beautiful gown is a Vera Wang, in keeping with the designer’s vibrant yet timeless aesthetic. With catering care of Wolfgang Puck, and event production by Oh, How Charming, this was definitely a day to remember.

Sophisticated table settings were adorned with gold serving ware and centrepieces spilling over with white blooms

The color way - inspired by the very glamorous Coco Chanel - included creams, soft blacks, and hints of gold. The ceremony took place in the round on a beautiful lawn. Mindy Rice had a custom structure welded to support billowing curtains of a creamy-golden silk taffeta, that draped softly and romantically on all four corners. A second layer of tulle was added to create depth and a third layer of soft cotton organdy gave the structure a diaphanous look. From the cocktail reception guests were escorted down a beautiful stone staircase into a softly lit ballroom. From the ceiling gorgeous black crystal chandeliers were dropped above the round tables which were covered in custom made linens, including a delicate tulle overlay for added drama. Black Chiavari chairs were added which created a stunning contrast against the cream linens. Long tables were combined with intimate rounds, and the beautiful florals included arrangements of Ranunculus, japonica pieris, sweet peas, garden roses, hydrangea & passion vine.

and Hua BLUE HILL | POCANTICO HILLS | NEW YORK PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEN HUANG

Carol and Hua were introduced by two mutual friends. They organized a brunch as an excuse to get the couple in the same room, which worked a treat! "We chose Blue Hill at Stone Barns for our venue because of the food especially the fresh produce grown right on the farm - and the beautiful setting. I took Hua there for his birthday the first year that we started dating, and we loved it so much that we made it a tradition. We usually wouldn’t worry about making reservations, preferring instead to sit at the bar and enjoy the more casual atmosphere with the same amazing food. Although we looked at a couple other venues, we knew that Blue Hill was what we wanted. We gave up having a large wedding so that we could have it there, and the result was a warm and intimate gathering of close friends and family. "

"When

Carol and Hua reached out

to me to shoot their wedding, I was

thrilled! A wedding at Blue Hill? Sure to be a stunning affair! But what I truly love about my couples is their deep

devotion

to each other while maintaining down to earth, laid back personalities and still producing a beautiful

stylish wedding.

And this was definitely the case for Carol and Hua!"

in the afternoon. It started raining as soon as I arrived at Blue Hill and all the way through our proposed portrait schedules. The rain poured and poured, allowing us just a few photos outside with tiny little parasols. Through it all, Carol and Hua had smiles on their faces and a gleeful, positive outlook. They moved their beautiful ceremony set up indoors, giving up hope of an outdoor ceremony. It was obvious they understood the real purpose behind their wedding: to be married in front of friends and family and surrounded by love, instead of worrying about anything outside of their control. As if the universe could sense their calm, the skies opened up and the evening sun started shining through, just in time for their cocktail hour outdoors. We even managed to take a quick stroll through the beautiful grounds at Blue Hill and take some more photographs and it turned into a perfect evening!" JEN HUANG, PHOTOGRAPHER

make your own floral adornment...

DIY

Supplies: Flowers Vintage lace Metal headband Ribbon Hair comb Felt Glue gun

instructions: Choose your flowers and snip them right at the base of the bloom. It is a good idea to spray them with a floral preservative so that they last longer out of water. Arrange the flowers how you would like them on a piece of felt. Add in other elements like vintage lace, greenery, and/or berries. Use a hot glue gun to adhere the flowers to the felt making sure all elements are secure. Fasten the your beautiful arrangement to your chosen headband, comb, or ribbon. Ta-daa!! Your floral adornment is ready to be enjoyed.

Love on the the Lake VILLA RUSCONI | LAGO MAGGIORE | ITALY PHOTOGRAPHY BY JONATHAN ONG

JiaEn & Fede

first met in New York. Four years later they threw in their day jobs to start Roomorama – an online business specializing in short term rentals around the world. Three years after that and one R18 proposal later, it was time to walk down the aisle at Villa Rusconi by Lago Maggiore, where Federico is from. Jia chose her Lanvin dress because she wanted a dress she would wear again and again. “This was the third dress I tried on and I loved it immediately – it was simple, elegant, and most importantly, it was comfortable!”

Jia says “I think the fact that it was so relaxed made it special. There were no rules and we didn’t have any expectations…. We were supposed to do the speeches when it was still light out, but everyone started eating. We just kind of went with the flow and did the speeches in the moonlight, on the lawn. In the end, everything worked out quite lovely.”

The couple’s advice for planning a wedding is “Always remember what a wedding is about – it is a celebration of love, and nothing else should matter more. Don’t stress too much about the details and what people might think – just relax and enjoy yourselves, and your guests will feed off the good energy!” Festival Jia En & Fede wish to visit: Coachella, California

The Photographer says... “I had never been to Italy before, so coming to Stresa was such a magical experience for me. I loved the fact that Fede & Jia En kept things very simple and let all the different elements of the wedding naturally shine through, like the location and the food. The whole day was very organic, with no real structure, which made it all the more fun & like a big party. JONATHAN ONG

confessions OF A WEDDING PLANNER

by Rhiannon Nicole

Believe me when I say I love a good DIY project just as much as the next craft-loving chick. I kid you not, my local arts and hobbies store absolutely knows me by name. But when it comes to hand crafting chunks of your own wedding day there’s so much more to consider than a little bit of glue and glitter. Below are a few simple tips and guidelines for throwing a DIY wedding (or at least incorporating some handmade details into your day) without pulling out your hair or breaking the bank. Remember, all of you brides and grooms to be, it’s so far from ‘Till DIY Do Us Part.’

{CONSIDER COSTS} DIY once stood for doing something yourself in order to save some serious cash. But get yourself knee deep in something seemingly simple (let’s say the popular choice of homemade mixed berry jam favors for all 200 of your dear guests) and you can kiss away a good chunk of your hard-earned money. The ingredients for the jam, the jars and lids to house it all in, the fabric to wrap the tops with, the twine or ribbon to hold the fabric in place, and the sweet little labels with your monogram on them all add up to an impressive cost. Instead, why not purchase jam for your favors through a Ma and Pa business local to where you or your groom grew up or are getting married. You may score a discount for buying a large quantity, you’ll definitely get the same homemade feel that DIY jam would have given and you’ll absolutely save yourself some money along with a few other valuable things.

{CONSIDER TIME} Which leads into my next thought. Time is money. Time is your friend when you’re planning your wedding. And the majority of DIY projects take a significant amount of time. Time that could otherwise be spent with family and friends who have travelled to see you and spend time with you and your significant other, distraction and project-free (because let’s be honest, tons of DIY couples wait until the last minute to get those projects done). Are we seeing the pattern here? As a wedding planner who often builds props and décor for my clients believe me when I say the simplest DIY projects (like fabric garlands) can sometimes be the most time invested. If you do decide to tackle a DIY project give yourself lots of time to finish and trouble shoot, and prepare to be finished if possible at least a couple of weeks before the big day. Hand folding your programs in the salon chair while your hair is being coiffed on the biggest day of your life is a no no in my books. {CONSIDER THE PROJECT} Thanks to the saturated industry of wedding blogs and marketplaces, you can score the best kind of second hand wedding décor online, some of it DIYed to begin with. Meaning not only can you take a DIY project off another couple’s hands to use for your own wedding but your potential DIY project could be sold post-wedding to another bride and groom hoping to rock that same look. Things that are good for a second and third time around? Fabric based items like linens, napkins, and runners, garlands and buntings,

chuppahs, centerpiece vases and tins, vintage pieces, signage, cake stands, table numbers, photo booth props and backdrops. Edible treats and things like confetti poppers, balloons, favors, dance floor decals or overly used items are usually a one-time use sort of deal. Oh and don’t plan on investing time and money into making something merely in hopes of reselling it after the fact. {BIGGER SCALE DIY’S} Aside from small DIY details, some couples have hopes of handling things like their flowers, food, music and rentals all on their own. I actually have a current client who told me when she first hired me that she’d be making her own wedding cake. I nearly fell off my chair hearing these words escape her mouth. A small, Bundt pan cake for a casual backyard wedding with 50 guests? Taking the DIY route may be perfectly appropriate (though that’s not the kind of wedding she’s having). As I explained to her, she hired me to help make her planning process as stress-free as possible. And mixing, baking, icing, decorating, transporting and setting up her own wedding cake the night before her wedding, didn’t quite stay in line with those goals. I’d much rather have her catching some serious shut eye on the eve of her wedding than wiping butter cream from her brow. I think she’s finally agreed. {TAKE ADVANTAGE} Of your talents that is. Sometimes DIYing a large detail for your wedding is commonsense. Sticking in line with the whole cake idea, I have a colleague in the industry that is a successful pastry chef with an impressive portfolio of beautifully crafted wedding cakes. For her upcoming fall wedding she’ll be making her own four-tier wedding cake. And while that sounds unfathomable to most, this is a wonderful example of an achievable large scale DIY. Because said girlfriend has tricks to make it work like having three of the tiers be dummies so that the decorating can be done a week before, employees to do the delivery and set up so she doesn’t have to, and a knowledge of the industry and cakes themselves to trust everything will be as expected. Common sense and intuitiveness are wonderful things to rely on when sitting on whether or not to tackle a specific DIY project. {WHY DIY} Ask yourself this: does having a DIY wedding seem like the way to go because thousands of other couples across the Internet have done the same? DIY weddings aren’t only trendy these days but an awesome reflection of a bride and groom and their families combined hard work. I totally get how alluring that gratification must be when all you can picture are the smitten faces of your guests enjoying every last handmade touch on your big day. But let’s not forget that the groom with the handmade ties has a mom who’s a seamstress. Or the bride with the gorgeous birch chuppah and heirloom lace draping has a father with a woodshop and an aunt with a copious amount of old lace curtains she’s not sure what to do with. Oh and that couple who had the handmade wood palette backdrop that looks like it’s straight out of an Anthropologie store display have an uncle who manufactures palettes (or may just own the city’s local Anthropologie store). DIY weddings are awesome. But so are weddings where not one DIY detail is in sight. At the end of the day whether you’re picking dried glue off of your manicured nails, the goal is all the same. Happy Crafting! www.heygorgeousevents.com
