Pompeya, catástrofe bajo el Vesubio La exposición plantea un discurso basado en una visión global de la vida en la ciudad antes, durante y después de la erupción que la enterró bajo las cenizas. Se trata de un recorrido iniciático mediante el cual el visitante puede redescubrir Pompeya y sus orígenes, experimentar la magnitud de la erupción devastadora que la sepultó en el año 79 d. C. y contemplar su resurgir a partir de las campañas arqueológicas promovidas por Carlos III. Para esta exposición han viajado al Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal de Madrid más de 600 piezas procedentes de varios museos, principalmente, del Museo Arqueológico Nacional de Nápoles, el museo que más piezas atesora de

Analizar el papel de la pintura al aire libre como motor de la renovación plástica del siglo XIX es el objetivo principal de esta exposición. En general, tendemos a relacionar la pintura al aire libre con el impresionismo pero, cuando Monet, Renoir, Sisley o Pissarro empezaron a exponer sus obras en el estudio del fotógrafo Nadar, en 1874, la pintura en plein air llevaba ya casi un siglo de desarrollo. La muestra reunirá alrededor de 100 obras: desde los iniciadores del paisaje al aire libre, como PierreHenri de Valenciennes y Thomas Jones, a artistas como Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny y todos los grandes maestros del impresionismo, hasta llegar a Van Gogh o Cézanne. IMpressionism and Open-air Painting From Corot to Van Gogh The principal aim of this exhibition is to offer an analysis of the practice of painting outdoors as a factor within the transformation and modernisation of 19thcentury art. In general, this practice is generally associated with Impressionism. In fact, although Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Pissarro first started to exhibit their works in the photographer Nadar’s studio in 1874, plein air painting had already existed for nearly a century. The exhibition will bring together around 100 works. It starts with work by some of the founders of plein air landscape painting such as Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes and Thomas Jones, and continues through the work of figures such as Turner, Constable, Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Daubigny and all the great figures of Impressionism, concluding at Van Gogh and Cézanne.

Pompeii: disaster under Vesuvius

This exhibition is an invitation to discover and explore. The exhibition is based on a global vision of life in the city before, during and after the eruption which buried the town under ash. This tour allows visitors to rediscover Pompeii and its origins, experience the magnitude of the devastating eruption which occurred in 79 AD and discover how the city came back to life through the archeological campaigns supported by King Charles of Bourbon. For the exhibition more than 600 pieces have been shipped to Madrid’s Arte Canal Exhibition Center from  several museums, mainly from the Naples National Archaeological Museum, the center with the 8 largest amount of artifacts from Pompeii.

Hiperrealismo A finales de los años 1960 surgió en Estados Unidos un grupo de artistas que pintaban con gran realismo objetos y escenas de la vida cotidiana utilizando la fotografía como base para la realización de sus obras. La exposición que presenta ahora el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza plantea, por primera vez, una antología del Hiperrealismo desde los grandes maestros norteamericanos de la primera generación, como Richard Estes, John Baeder, Robert Bechtle, Tom Blackwell, Chuck Close o Robert Cottingham, a su continuidad en Europa y al impacto en pintores de generaciones posteriores, hasta la actualidad. El Hiperrealismo no es un movimiento cerrado; hoy, más de cuarenta años después de su aparición continúan en activo muchos de los pioneros del grupo y nuevos artistas utilizan la técnica fotorrealista en sus creaciones. Herramientas y motivos han evolucionado o cambiado con el tiempo pero con su increíble definición y nitidez, las obras hiperrealistas continúan fascinando al público.

Hyperrealism In the late 1960s a group of artists emerged in the United States who painted scenes and objects from daily life wit a high degree of realism, using photography as the basis for their works. For the first time, the exhibition now presented at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza offers a survey of Hyperrealism that starts with the great US masters of the first generation such as Richard Estes, John Baeder, Robert Bechtle, Tom Blackwell, Chuck Close and Robert Cottingham, continues in Europe with their influence on subsequent generations, and concludes in the present day. Hyperrealism is not a closed movement and today, more than forty years after it arose, many of the pioneering figures continue to be active while new artists deploy the photorealist technique in their creations.

La vida nocturna de la ciudad alcanza su punto álgido durante estos meses y parece alterar la sangre. Las calles se llenan cada vez más de jóvenes que salen de marcha y toman las terrazas al aire libre. A pesar de todo hay que tener precaución con el tiempo, pues no son raros los días de lluvia e incluso viento, en estos meses. Además de disfrutar de los paseos por la ciudad, aprovechando que cada vez los días son más largos, nosotros le ofrecemos una visión de las zonas verdes de Madrid donde disfrutar de los colores que trae la primavera. Spring is one of the most pleasant times of the year to visit Madrid. The long days are generally warm and the nights cool. The nightlife goes up a notch, as the warmth seems to get the blood flowing. Large numbers of young people take to the streets for the all-night ‘marcha’ and all the outdoor cafes open up. Rain is not uncommon at this time of the year, and days are often quite windy. Besides enjoying the walks around the city, as days are getting longer, we suggest a visit to 11 Madrid’s green areas to enjoy the colors that spring brings.

primavera en madrid Spring IN MADRID Madrid cuenta con abundantes espacios naturales de gran variedad paisajística, desde la Sierra de Madrid, montañosa y llena de bellos parajes donde se pueden practicar deportes de nieve y montaña, a la zona de la vega de Aranjuez o el paisaje manchego en el entorno de Alcalá de Henares. También los madrileños gustan de cuidar sus numerosos parques y jardines urbanos, algunos de ellos de merecida fama histórica como los Jardines del Real Sitio de Aranjuez, el Parque del Retiro de Madrid o la Casa de Campo. Otros son de creación reciente, como el Parque Juan Carlos I o el Parque de Tierno Galván. Todos ellos, distribuidos por diferentes zonas urbanas, crean espacios verdes de gran belleza. El Retiro, como se le conoce popularmente al parque del Buen Retiro, es la joya del patrimonio artístico-natural de la ciudad y testigo de la historia monárquica, es un emblema de Madrid que constituye una visita obligada para los turistas. Muy ligado a la monarquía, las primeras noticias que se tienen del parque datan de la época de los Reyes Católicos, fundadores del Monasterio de los Jerónimos, cerca del cual había unos aposentos reales conocidos como “el Cuarto”. Es durante el reinado de Felipe II cuando se concreta el uso de esta zona como lugar de retiro y recogimiento religioso, de ahí su nombre.

“El Retiro, es un emblema de Madrid que constituye una visita obligada para los turistas.” Muy cerca del Retiro, el Real Jardín Botánico es una caja de sorpresas para quien se acerque a él, porque está repleto de hermosos rincones que contemplan más de dos siglos de historia. Además este singular espacio introduce al visitante en el conocimiento de una ciencia con largos años de tradición como es la Botánica. La Casa de Campo es una enorme extensión verde -1.722 hectáreas- situada a las puertas de Madrid. Felipe II adquirió hacia 1560 ó 1561 las propiedades -casa-palacio y tierras- situadas frente a la cornisa sobre el río Manzanares que pertenecían a la nobiliaria familia de los Vargas. Posteriormente las reconvirtió en una villa renacentista sin pretensiones de representatividad pero, acorde con su sensibilidad, enmarcada por bellos jardines. Descripciones documentadas y restos de construcciones permiten recrear un conjunto que identifica su carácter manierista a través de sus elementos clásicos: grutas, laberintos, burlas de agua, etc., situados en un auténtico vergel rodeado de densos arbolados que fueron plantados en aquel tiempo. Más alejado se encuentra el Parque El Capricho (solo abierto los festivos y fines de semana), creado a finales del siglo XVIII por la condesa-duquesa de Benavente. Este parque es uno de los ejemplares más sobresalientes y singulares de jardín paisajístico español. La visita es particularmente aconsejable en primavera, cuando el paseo se realiza entre el perfume de los bosquetes de lilas y las cascadas de rosas.

In Madrid there are many natural spaces with varied landscapes from the Sierra de Madrid mountains, which is full of beautiful locations for practising snow and mountain sports, to the Aranjuez plain or the landscape of La Mancha in the area surrounding Alcalá de Henares. The people from Madrid also like to look after their many urban parks and gardens, some of them wellknown historically like the Royal Residence of Aranjuez gardens, the Retiro Park in Madrid or the Casa de Campo park. Others were created recently, like the Juan Carlos I Park or the Tierno Galván Park. They can be found in different urban areas and are very beautiful green spaces. El Retiro Park is part of the city´s historical heritage and botanical patrimony inherited from past centuries. Once a recreation area for the Royal Family, it has become a very popular park and is central to the city´s image. A play area fit for kings: the first mention ever of this park goes back to the era of the Catholic Kings (‘Reyes Católicos’, who were Spain’s first kings after the Reconquest’s unification of all Spanish Provinces). Founders of the Jerónimos Monastery (Monasterio de los Jerónimos), a part of them were used as royal lodgings, called ‘the Quarters’, which made this area into the temporary royal household. Under Felipe II it became a place for taking a break from the court life, as well as to enjoy religious retreat in, which it owes the present name to. Near the Retiro Park, the Real Jardín Botánico (Royal Botanical Garden) gives visitors the chance to enjoy the peace and quiet of being immersed in nature. While the garden has species dating back more than two centuries for visitors to enjoy, it is also the home to both researchers and botanists.

“El Retiro Park is part of the city´s historical heritage and botanical patrimony inherited from pastcenturies.” Casa de Campo park is an enormous green area covering 1,722 hectares, located just outside of Madrid. The property, located opposite a projection over the Manzanares River, had belonged to the noble Vargas family. Philip II acquired it, including a mansion and the land, in around 1560 or 1561. He later converted it into a Renaissance villa for private rather than official use, and surrounded it with beautiful gardens, a reflection of his tastes. Documented descriptions and remnants of structures have made it possible to recreate a place whose Mannerist style can be identified through its typical elements: grottoes, mazes, giochi d’acqua (concealed jets of water to spray unsuspecting visitors), etc., located in a veritable oasis surrounded by dense trees, which were planted at that time. Far from the city center, you can also visit the Parque El Capricho (only open on weekends and public holidays) It was created in the late 18th century by the Countess-Duchess of Benavente. This park is one of the most outstanding and unique examples of the landscape garden in Spain. Spring is a particularly good time to visit, when your stroll will be accompanied by the perfume from the groves of lilacs and the cascading roses.

The Reina Sofia is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the world today. There’s a different way to enjoy Madrid’s nightlife. Just head for the Chueca area, where all inhibitions have been cast aside to make way for fun and tolerance, and where you’ll find a whole host of wicked venues, techno discos and designer clubs. In fact this neighbourhood has always been a beacon of modernity, and was the birthplace of the famous “movida madrileña” (a countercultural movement of the 70s and 80s). And as well as being the favourite hangout of the gay and transsexual community, the streets in this area are becoming more and more popular with anyone looking for first-rate nightlife. In summer, it’s well worth visiting the outdoor terraces in the surroundings of the Plaza de Chueca square, where you’re always guaranteed to find a great atmosphere. And of course if you want to see for yourself everything that’s on offer in this most openly tolerant of cities, why not visit Madrid during Gay Pride Week (last week of June)? The event features open air concerts and shows, as well as a parade of floats and fancy dress, while the whole area is awash with rainbow flags. 44

Museo de Arte Público Public Art Museum En pleno Paseo de la Castellana un espacio de más de 4.000 m2, al aire libre, con obras escultóricas del arte español contemporáneo. Bajo el paso elevado que une las calles de Juan Bravo y Eduardo Dato, se exponen 17 esculturas abstractas diseñadas por otros tantos artistas españoles. Se trata de un museo al aire libre construido en los años 70 para integrar el arte contemporáneo en la ciudad y con sus habitantes .

Over 4,000 m2, in the heart of the Paseo de la Castellana, dedicated to contemporary Spanish art. Beneath the flyover built in 1970 to join Juan Bravo and Eduardo Dato street, stand 17 abstract sculptures designed by 17 different Spanish artists. This is an open air museum in which the city, its inhabitants and art merge in a common space.

museo de arte público public art museum El crecimiento urbanístico y demográfico de Madrid obligó, en la década de los sesenta, a idear una forma de unir el centro de la ciudad con los nuevos barrios. Así, en 1968 se aprobó un proyecto por el cual se construyó el puente de 320 metros de longitud que desemboca en el barrio de Salamanca. No era un simple puente, ya que en su diseño, no sólo se tuvo en cuenta la función que debía cumplir, sino también su impacto estético. Por ello, se utilizaron materiales como el acero corten para sus vigas o el hormigón blanco de los pilares, con los que conseguir embellecer la estructura. Poco después, ese estudiado diseño fue el que permitió aprovechar el puente como marco para un nuevo museo de arte abstracto. El impulsor de la idea de transformar esta zona de paso en un centro de arte al aire libre fue el artista Eusebio Sempere quien, además de participar en este proyecto, jugó un papel esencial en las donaciones de las esculturas por parte de los propios autores o sus familiares. Además de ceder una de sus esculturas al museo ‘Móvil’, la influencia artística de Sempere está presente en parte de la ornamentación de la construcción, como las barandillas o los asientos que bordean un pequeño estanque situado bajo el puente.

Así, al iniciar el recorrido desde la calle Serrano, se encuentran piezas como Mediterráneo, de Martín Chirino; Un mon per a infants, de Andreu Alfaro; o Al otro lado del muro, de José María Subirachs, pero también obras de Francisco Sobrino, Rafael Leoz, Marcel Martí y de Amadeo Gabino. Descendiendo hacia el Paseo de la Castellana, encontramos obras vanguardistas, como la escultura de Pablo Palazuelo o el mural de Gerardo Rueda, las que comparten protagonismo con las creaciones de Joan Mirò –Mère Ubu–, Julio González –La petite faucille y Alberto Sánchez – Toros ibéricos–, exponentes de la generación de la denominada ‘vanguardia histórica’. Tampoco falta, por supuesto, una escultura de Eduardo Chillida, Sirena varada, una gran pieza de hormigón suspendida de los pilares del propio puente.

In the 1960’s the urban and demographical growth of the city of Madrid made it necessary to seek a way of joining the city centre with the new surrounding neighbourhoods. Hence, in 1968 the project drawn up by the engineers Alberto Corral López Dóriga, José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez and Julio Martínez Calzón to build a 320-metre bridge over to the Salamanca neighbourhood was approved. It is not simply a bridge since its design did not only consider the function it should fulfil, but also contemplated the aesthetic impact of the structure. Hence, materials such as cut steel were used for the beams and white cement for the pillars in order to embellish the structure. Shortly afterwards, the bridge’s long-studied design was what inspired the bridge to be chosen as the setting for a new museum of abstract art. The promoter of the idea to transform this bypass area into an open air art centre was the artist Eusebio Sempere, who not only participated in the project, but played an essential role in obtaining sculpture donations from the authors themselves or their relatives. In addition to lending one of his own sculptures to the museum, ‘Mobile’, the artistic influence of Sempere is present in part of the building’s adornment, such as the railings or the seats placed along a small lake located under the bridge. The location of each sculpture is intended to accompany the pedestrians as they cross the passageway or simply stroll alongside the gardened area of this museum that is open to the public 24 hours a day. What is more, the lighting installed also allows us to enjoy the forms of the pieces after
