From the Principal

2019 is coming to a close and what a year it has been.

This has been a real year of joy and sorrow. As a school, we have had successes in F1 in Schools, in Rugby, in mountain biking, in ICAS competitions, in Chess and so many more. We have also had the more personal joys of successful learning overcoming challenges like those offered by the school’s outdoor education programme. Mixed in with this have been the sorrows, the passing of Jack Dunwoodie, a much-loved student who graduated last year left a hole in so many hearts. This was quickly followed by the loss of Mr Don Burns, our Senior School specialist Maths teacher extraordinaire. It was while I was at the funerals of these members of our MCC community that I recalled a lesson I learned many years ago. As I listened to the eulogies for both Jack and Don, one a young many snatched in his prime and the other an old man who had lived a long and glorious life, I heard the same message. Both of these men lived life to the full, both the old and the young. They took hold of opportunities with both hands and ran with them. They did not spend their time sulking and complaining about how unfair life is. We all know that life is not fair, but these men ignored that. Instead, they took what they were offered and made something beautiful of their time here. They found the Joy that is in the everyday things and refused to be dragged down by the sorrow. Some of our staff and students are moving on at the end of this year, in fact, some have already left us for other places and positions. This same observation can be made about those changes to

our community. We can choose to lament their leaving and feel sad and deprived of the future time together or we can rejoice in the time and opportunity we had to know and be with them. This is not to say that we shouldn’t be sad, but that the reason we are sad is because of how much they were loved. It is the love that is important.

In amongst the joys and the sorrows, this year has also been a tough one for our Senior School students, particularly Year 11. The expected changes to the senior curriculum have hit with a vengeance, creating chaos in schools across Queensland, MCC being no exception. Probably the most significant change for the students and teachers is the radical increase in difficulty of some of the new syllabi. Our staff have been there as students struggled with a higher level of expectation encouraging them and supporting them as they strive to meet this new challenge. It has been a difficult journey for everyone with many tears and much frustration. Meanwhile, our seniors, the group known as the Prep halfcohort, the group that was the first of the new enrolment age restrictions so many years ago, have ended an era as being the last of the OP students and the last students to do a QCS test.

As we bring the year to a close I want to thank each of the staff members who have given their best this year for the students, and all the parents who trusted us with their most precious possessions, their children. We see each of our students at Mackay Christian College as a precious gift from God and we are thankful for each moment we get to spend with them, even when they are driving us insane, because each of them are the reason that Jesus came and died on a cross. That fact is a joy that is worth all the sorrows.

God Bless,

Open Day / King's Park Expo

From the College Captains

Wow! What a ride my 14 years of schooling at MCC has been. When I was a little prep student taking my firsts steps inside the doors of MCC with my whole life ahead of me, I never once pictured I would be here today as the Female College Captain for 2019.

From then to now, many great moments were made, and a few battles were fought. Whether that was from stressing over assignments or dealing with dyslexia. These battles were often drowned out by the overwhelming support of my teachers, friends, other students and my family. Other great highlights of my schooling years include, the endless lunchtimes spent with friends, performing in Shrek The Musical or participating in rugby teams. Leading MCC in the ANZAC march, Founders Day, weekly assemblies or weekly meetings with Mr Hopper.

The many belly laughs with Mr Murdoch in Legal or with Mr Craven in Biology made every second of my schooling worth it. I am endlessly grateful for the privilege of being your Female College Captain. To future captains, lead with confidence, courage and compassion.

Grace Watson | College Captain

When I started at MCC in 2017, I had never expected to be challenged so much academically. I learnt quickly that I could no longer sit back and go along for the ride if I wanted to succeed at MCC I had to work for it. As G.K. Nelson said “Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard, then succeed on purpose.” MCC helped to shape me into the person I am today; no longer willing to stand back. Being elected as one of the 2019 College Captains certainly reinforced my newfound confidence and I further developed as a leader.

My final year at MCC also meant my last opportunity to represent the school at the National School Mountain Bike Competition. This competition began 3 years ago and I have competed every year. The school’s competition is always a fun event that enables all skill levels to participate and it’s been

a privilege to see the improvement kids make year after year. Laying a wreath on ANZAC Day whilst wearing an Akubra with my fellow captains was amongst my most memorable events of 2019.

Upon reflection, I have realised the importance of relationships with Teachers and peers, and encourage students to work on these as they have real weight to them. I had the privilege to have been taught by Mr Burns.

As my journey at MCC comes to a close I would like to remind everyone to embrace the opportunities that present themselves. I would never have believed that I would have the opportunity to be college captain, but it is a role that I am grateful for.

Kiah Dumigan | College Captain

Being a college captain, who leads the school in a positive way that impacts the people around me, has been a goal of mine from a young age. At the end of 2018 this dream became a reality when I was announced as the Female Vice Captain. Throughout the duration of my leadership role, I have never seen myself as the person who sits on stage at assembly but rather a student in the college who gets along side others to help and encourage them.

I am thankful to the College for giving me opportunity to represent them in a way that honours and reflects the values on which it is founded. During my final year I have realised how easy it can be to lose sight of your goals when the stress of school, home and work get in the way. I have found that in these moments it is important to keep your head up, ask for help when you need it, cherish the hard times and the good ones because before you know it you’ll be graduating.

College Captains: Joshua Dean-Milton, Emma Stam, Kiah Dumigan, Grace Watson with Dr Barclie Gallogray, College Principal 2019

From the House Family Captains

Averill

Thank you for a great year Averill! 2019 has been a fun filled year. Being the Averill Captains has been challenging, but memorable. We want to thank the whole of Averill for making our job so much easier. You guys are the reason we had great house family spirit that thew us over the line.

We will miss the enlightening laughter in house family and home room. We will miss the endless sound of cheering at every sports carnival. This year has been stressful as our last year of school, but when you add a leadership position on top, it pushes us to our limits. With the complete help of Ms McQuaker and many more extraordinary teachers and students, it has been so comforting to know we have had a team behind us during the entire journey.

So to the future Averill Captains of 2020 we wish you all the best on this roller coaster of a journey. Good luck, stay strong and most importantly keep God the Centre of everything! “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is a progress. Working together is success.”

Dennis

Dennis is a house family built on culture, family, and fun. 2019 has been an amazing year where we have accomplished so much over the 12 months. Dennis house family has changed significantly in the past two years, the students have grown up and changed into amazing and unique individuals and have learned to work together and mature as young adults. It has been an honour and a privilege to be a house captain for Dennis. Each one of our leadership team have enjoyed serving in a number of capacities. We as leaders have certainly faced challenges, but we have all been able to work together and help one another.

We would like to thank Mr Millward and the whole of the Dennis House Family. These people have made Dennis the amazing family it is today. To the future House Captains good luck, work hard, collaborate efficiently and also have fun. Being captain can be stressful and full of painful moments, but remember. Year 12 is a year you will never forget. We wish you and the house family all the best in the future.

Evans

2019 has been a memorable year, none of us will forget our Evans family. We have had a lot of ups and downs but we are thankful for this whole experience, it has made us become better people.

The team spirit of Evans has grown over this year and will continue to do so as we hope our actions leave a legacy that motivates people to do more, reach higher, push the boundaries and become better than they were yesterday.

It has been a joy to lead and connect with the younger students during house family time and for the older students, we encourage you to challenge yourself and step up to the role of being mentors to the younger grades.

We are also thankful for Mr Swadling guiding us through the first term and his contributions to Evans house family over the past years. We are blessed and fortunate for Mrs Corry stepping up to the challenging role for the remainder of our time as Evans House Family Captains.

We would also like to acknowledge the other house families Young, Dennis and Averill for always bringing their A game to each event. We as captains have loved this role and would like to say good luck to the future Evans Captains of 2020!!

Evans House Family Captains

Kyra Gildett, Clayton Hewitt, Drummond Robbie, Alyce Mossis (absent)

Young 2019 has been a great journey of big trials and little triumphs. Young House has celebrated the success of its members who have won age champion at the sporting carnivals, travelled to the Torres Strait for the mission trip and those who gave their best and received Thank You awards. This year, during House Family time, we have really enjoyed writing letters of encouragement to the Young House Family members at Providence. It has also been exciting to receive letters back from them too.

Despite our great efforts in various sporting events, we were unable to attain a win. We did, however, attempt to make a comeback with our enthusiastic singing of the National Anthem and passionate environmental efforts at litter parade, which earned us some House Family points.

We would like to thank, Miss Hopper, all the students of Young House, our families, friends, and the other House Families for their support throughout the year. All the best to the future captains and remember “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work”

Care Ambassadors

FRONT ROW: Mrs Sylvia Fay, Natasha Walker, Sara Daniel

SECOND ROW: Alexander Hislop Ocean George-Cawte

When we were elected Care Ambassadors we were unsure on what we would be doing but over the past year we have really grown into this role taking on the challenges that came with it. We’re all coming to our final years of schooling, and being Care Ambassadors has taught us important life skills, such as how to work with others, working towards a deadline, and social skills. We were grateful to assist the Parent Association with raising funds for our College by participating in the Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls. And we found joy is writing to and receiving letters from our sponsor child, Charith who lives in Ecuador.

We had the opportunity to plan and organise events for the National Day of Action Against Bulling and Violence by leaving positive messages written in chalk on the footpaths all around the College and by having an odd sock day to promote it’s ok to be different. We also held a sausage sizzle to raise funds for Headspace to support the wonderful work they do for young people in our community.

‘R U OK?’ Day was one of our biggest events this year where we continued the legacy of suppling King's Park campus students with cupcakes in exchange for a positive message. On the day we also educated students on the importance of asking someone ‘R U OK?’ and the steps to take in helping someone after you’ve asked the question. Students on King's Park Campus sent letters to students on Providence to say hello and let them know it’s good to connect with others.

Shoutout to Mrs Fay for being a really cool mentor and all the best to the new incoming CARE Ambassadors of 2020.
