hen the Lord does a great work, it is always appropriate for His people to rejoice. Now, as Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary celebrates 50 years of service

to our Savior, we have many reasons to honor what the Lord has done through this special ministry. For those of us who listened for years as Dr. Gray Allison told the story, “The Miracle of MidAmerica,” the past is ingrained into our memories and emotions.

THE CONTEXT Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary was never owned or operated by the Southern Baptist Convention, but it was birthed within this denomination as surely as it could be. The concerns surrounding the Southern Baptist Convention were the concerns of the founders of Mid-America. The founders’ training and ministries had been exclusively Southern Baptist. Further, the missions and cooperative culture of the Southern Baptist Convention was their culture as well. So, a conundrum existed. How do you avoid the dangerous drift theologically leftward without separation? Can you be “salt and light” within your own denomination? And how do you influence a group that may not fully want your influence?

THE PLAN According to Dr. Allison, the original plan was to meet yearly, often at the Annual Meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention each June, and pray. Their prayer was that one of our seminaries would catch fire with a zeal for missions and evangelism that would spread far and wide. Some discussion existed that a new seminary could be started in the northeastern United States, so perhaps this new school could be a place of revival. As the decade of the 1960s ended, it became more apparent that no northeastern school would become a reality and that no existing school had yet made the turn to place the proper

Dr. Allison and the initial faculty did not see themselves just stepping into a new ministry to model good behavior for others; they saw themselves as being personally obedient to the call of the Lord Jesus on their lives to follow Him. These men and their families sacrificed their careers and reputations to stand strong for the Lord. Fifty years later the same distinctives can be found in the classrooms of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. Bible, missions, and evangelism serve as the doctrinal centerpiece of who and what the school is. When I first became president in 1997, I met with Dr. Adrian Rogers and asked him his thoughts on the future of Mid-America. He told me that, “As Mid-America goes, so goes the Southern Baptist Convention. As long as the Lord has a place for the Southern Baptist Convention, He will have a place for Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary.”

very decade of the history of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary brought change and challenges. The origin of the school

in the early 1970s was truly a faith-based start with a handful of students meeting in Olivet Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. Under the leadership of Dr. Gray Allison, the school not only experienced dynamic enrollment growth, but also the school changed locations almost every decade of its life. Only three years old, the school relocated from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Memphis, Tennessee, to meet on the property of Bellevue Baptist Church until its new location across the street from Bellevue was ready for

This excerpt is from the story faithfully told by Dr. B. Gray Allison, late founder and President of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary 1972–1997 and President Emeritus until his death in 2019. “Dr. Gray,” as he was called, told the story each year during the Seminary’s annual Founders’ Days that kick off the school year. Over the years, new chapters were added to the story, eventually becoming known as “The Miracle of Mid-America,” as God continued to work. umber one, our motto was carefully chosen. “That in all things He might have the preeminence” [Colossians 1:18]. It’s all Him. In 1962, some of us began to talk about the need for a

seminary—a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching, Bible-preaching

seminary—the need to get these young preachers filled with the Word of God and filled with the Spirit of God out witnessing. Most of you are too young to know, but our [Southern Baptist] Convention had gone a long way in the wrong direction. The seminaries were liberal. The colleges were liberal. Our whole Convention had just drifted. Some of us were really burdened. We began to talk about it and pray about it and ask God to give us a seminary. For about nine years a group of us talked about the need for a seminary where every professor would believe all the Bible, all the way through without any question at all. Where every professor would be an active member of a local cooperating Southern Baptist Church. We had some professors in some seminaries who weren’t. How are you going to have Baptists if you don’t have Baptists training them? Where every professor would be a soulwinner. A seminary that would be centered in missions and evangelism. Just unashamedly conservative. Unashamedly evangelistic and mission minded.

Most of the men who were involved in the Practical Missions efforts of the school have gone on to be pastors, evangelists, and missionaries. Several have told me that what they learned sitting around the table before we went out has been indispensable in their ministries. What did they learn? Truths from Bill Gordon, H. E. Men who were greatly involved at MABTS invested their time in me, and I continued that method throughout my time at the school. In 1987, Ronnie and Susan moved their family to Memphis and began attending Mid-America. During his time there, he started the Street Ministry Practical Mission which continues to go out on the streets of Memphis. One of his favorite things has been to teach and mentor seminary students throughout the years. In 1993, he founded the Inner-City Outreach Center and later planted Miracle Baptist Church, his second church plant. Since coming to the Lord in 1981, Ronnie has seen more than 60,000 people ask Jesus to save them. All glory goes to Jesus Christ! Combining evangelistic trips, overseas and at home, with revivals, crusades, and street ministry, God has evidenced a call to evangelism in Ronnie’s life.

HIGHLIGHTS

WANTED: TEAM PLAYERS TO POINT STUDENTS TO MID-AMERICA Our Admissions Team is seeking alumni and friends who will help us tell the story of Mid-America to those God may be calling to our school. The compensation package? It’s out of this world! No, it’s not a paid position, but it’s extremely rewarding both to those who refer a student to us and to those who respond. Studies show that the vast majority (91 percent) of MidAmerica students attend our school because a friend or family member told them about us. It’s word-ofmouth advertising that no amount of money can buy.

PREVIEW DAY, OCTOBER 13, 2022 THEME IS “JOIN OUR TEAM!” This fall, we’ve planned the perfect opportunity for you to refer to us a student who is looking for a college or seminary. Take a moment right now and call, email, or text someone you know, inviting them to Preview Day on October 13. Visit mabts.edu/previewday or collegeatmidamerica/previewday.

Held March 31–April 3, our 2022 production entitled “Lord, I Believe,” was the highest attended Mid-America Passion Play ever with more than 10 professions of faith and countless lives reached!
