THE HOME DEPOT, Alpharetta, GA Lot, Lumber, Garden Associate

The ideas of sustainabilty as a means of new inovative systems started to become important to me in this project. Allowing different systems that are conventionally used, to actually be re-considered. The outer skin became an intergral part of a water catching system and a Richard Rogers esque style of systematic representation. The vents and systematic elements became emphasized as a means of reality. And the added program on top of the retail acted as a method of making all these systems aware. In this program is where all of these systems are actually exposed as a means of showing production, and how the systems work. In addition to satisfying all these requirements for people in the area, the idea that almost every abandoned post-industrial building in Atlanta was being turned into lofts became a desire that would be interesting in a high rise. So, with such in mind, layed out the residential quarters loft-esque format.

To gaze upon open fields with a heart filled with deceit, naivety, selfishness, and a yearning for gain in the world. To look upon a shovel as a tool for survival, a tool for gain in life. Building on others struggles just for our own sake, never to look at the shovel as a the device in which has destroyed a motive, a will, and an entire group of people. Sweat shows the passion for one’s self; blood, the gleam of light in which truly burns too bright to focus. Currency and perspiration determine equality, where in which hard labor, work, and determination show sense of morals. Hyms, close quarters, become the glue that bond several different people and cultures together. Green, cars, luxurious homes, the pedestal in which rises a single race above others. We became a cover up for so many wrongs. Becoming not only a tool for work, but sexual pleasure. “What are these shouts we hear!” We recite! “Though you are like Gilead to me, like the summit of Lebanon, I will surely make you like a desert, like towns inhabited… Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, making his countrymen work for nothing, not paying them for their labor”. “What do you think you are doing?! We shall not permit this!” To feel our pain, to acknowledge what it took to do what we did. To strive and strive and always just get beat down to the grown both physically and emotionally. We try to do what we can to get by and we are spitted. Please understand what we are doing. Non-sense, we will use you, abuse you, re-use and exploit you do our own doings. We are the superior and we demand NO equality. “This is all we’ve known.” “This is all we’ve known.”

The guidlines for this project were to design a place that began to re-connect one with the healing of one’s mind, body, the social network and human nature. the intent for this site was to create a less transient space in a transient society. This has been done in such a fashion of layering techniques where vignettes open up to view other programs, people, building textures and also the sky. along with this layering system also is an operable window system that is varied by the season, and by the occuant inside.

This project was one of the more fun ones I did while I was in design studio for five years. The intenet of the project was to examine certain aspects of a species, and to disect them and transform them into an Architectural notion. The Earthworm was my selection after an examination of about 10 species. The qualities I extracted from the Eartheworm were Skin, Locomotive capabilities, its’

Over the past couple of decades we have polluted a lot of large scale urban areas due to contamination. These sites which are deemed by both social and governmental organizations are called Brownfields. A Brownfield is defined as such by the EPA: “A former industrial or commercial site where future use is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination.’ Each year the EPA grants specific funds to organizations, states, and governments which is awarded not necessarily by severity of conditions but rather opportunity for growth. This year alone the state of Georgia only received $200,000 in awards towards Brownfield development. The EPA’s Brownfield program is intended to broaden the integration of economic and environmental priorities, but it’s program still has so many limitations. So, how can we exhibit and new method of remediation that coincides with that statement of the EPA? Simple, we provide a safe, healthy, cost efficient, and social interactive place. Considering most of these Brownfield sites are rather large post-industrial sites, it becomes a great catalyst to show local governments, local residents, and then the larger scope spectators that this waste does not just have to be sent to land fill. The goal would be to provide a case study of land remediation in which local governments, local residents, and then larger establishments learn and practice from.

Not only is the site a culmination of different social minds but also a culmination of different site conditions. The site is infiltrated with kudzu and several abandoned homeless spaces. Also the site’s ground cover is different through out. As you start north you start on a hard surface that weeds and plants have started to penetrate, and as you start to approach the Freedom Parkway bridge underneath is even more continuity of the skate life and the ground surfaces even changes to the point where it seems only the skaters could really inhabit only certain parts. Once on the other side of the bridge as you stand on the tracks you get this ‘landscaped’ feeling where the Inmann park people inhabit to the left, and to the right is this lush landscape of kudzu which covers over other surfaces but the kudzu is penetratable to the foot.

The transit hub is an attempt to bring multiple social groups together and have them start to interact with each other or be able to observe one another’s lifestyle. The concept for the hub is to have series of surfaces that allow or deny certain activities and to use ‘screening’ or texturizing devices that start to, vertically, to the same as the ground surfaces. This starts to resemble the different textures and mechanisms of the social groups that inhabit the surrounding areas whome which will use this hub.
