Olde Fashioned Christmas 2023

Heritage Society Welcome " Snow Place Like Pioneer Village " The Ferndale Heritage Society would like to welcome you to the 31st Annual Olde Fashioned Christmas at Pioneer Village. There’s snow place like home with your friends and family, There’s snow place like home and no place I’d rather be. There are many reasons to love the holiday season. Maybe it’s the delicious taste of hot cocoa, gathering together to decorate, or the anticipation of time spent with beloved family and friends. For those of us in the colder climates, watching the snowflakes fall and cover the ground with a white blanket is the essence of Christmas. Who doesn’t love a snow day now and then? As you bundle up and make gift lists for your loved ones— make sure to celebrate the beauty of the season with the help of a good book (or a yummy hot drink with marshmallows) by the fireplace, especially on a snowy day. Pioneer Village invites you to come and enjoy the pleasures of an old-fashioned snowy Christmas. Last year, the Heritage Society celebrated our longestserving volunteers, learning who they were and how they came to volunteer at Pioneer Village. For our 31st anniversary, we are celebrating our newest volunteers. What keeps our society “refreshing”? New members who bring in new ideas to blend with our traditional ways of getting things done. They offer a new vision and enthusiasm for maintaining our past. While the society is built around preserving the past, new generations emerge and their interests are seen from a different perspective. There’s no shortage of old-timers here happy to help the newbies get the hang of things! Our dedicated teams of volunteers work hard keeping the grounds looking good, selecting and putting up beautiful lights and decorations during holidays and

special occasions, maintaining each of the cabins, handling publicity, organizing and teaching educational programs. Our volunteers have put in countless hours repairing and maintaining the village against the effects of extreme weather and the ravages of time. Volunteers love nothing more than opportunities to participate in costumed occasions, enlightening often amazed visitors on how life was lived to the fullest long before all of the gewgaws and gadgets we have to navigate today! Displayed in the log cabins at Pioneer Village you can see museum display collections such as sad irons, dolls, furniture and so much more. Come walk back through time with us as our volunteer hosts in period costume greet you at the entrance and in each cabin to share with you some of our special collections this holiday season. Step out of the winter chill into the warm, cozy cabins to see how our pioneer forebears spent the Christmas season. Join us in the Pavilion where children can make a holiday craft, enjoy refreshments for all and be entertained by local musicians and high school students. Experience the sights, sounds, smells and simple pleasures of the Christmases of long ago here in the Pacific Northwest. Please don’t forget to thank all our wonderful volunteers, new and old-timers, for their many hours of preparation and hosting. We will look forward to your return each year, as so many families have made Olde Fashioned Christmas an annual holiday tradition. Proceeds from our events maintain and support continued improvements, acquisitions, and educational programs for historic Pioneer Village. We wish you and yours the very best during this holiday season. -Ferndale Heritage Society

The Cabins at

Pioneer Village The Ticket Booth Your first stop at the park is the ticket booth outside the Tillicum House, where Shay Leibrant and her helpers collect money from the ticket sales. This smiling group of volunteers along with the gate greeters, organized by Bruce Longstreth, will start your Olde Fashioned Christmas visit with a cheerful greeting and all the information you need for a magical trip back in time through the Christmases of the past. Shay Leibrant is a young member, but she is not a new member. She joined as a child in 1997 after her Grandma Sager helped to found the Ferndale Heritage Society. Now, as an adult, she is the third generation in her family to serve on the board. She enjoys being a part of our community, getting involved in all FHS events and learning about local history. Shay’s first time participating in the Old Settler’s Picnic Parade was as a baby and she has not missed a parade since. She has volunteered in many of the cabins over the years, but this year, she will be managing the ticket booth. Be sure to say “Hello” when you visit. ”Good Old Fashioned Service”

The Church Welcome to our Zion Congregation Church that was built in 1876 close to California Creek near Blaine, WA. This cabin had been a sanctuary and also a home for many Pacific Northwest settlers and pioneers. Step inside and sit for a reflective moment in one of the old wooden pews. Selah and Marcus Binarao are the lead hosts and have put forth a lot of effort to decorate the church for your enjoyment. The Binaraos have only been members of society for a few years but have a magical tie to the church as they were married in it in 2021. Selah is a local realtor with many ties to the Ferndale community. “I lived in Ferndale for my first nine years, moved away and then came back to Ferndale for a visit. I revisited the park and remembered all the wonderful moments I had there as a student participating in the education program and how immersive it was to learn history in that way. My favorite event now was this year’s education program because I was an educator and reflected back to when I was a student. The really old Bible, and the portrait of the founding Reverend W.M. Stewart, because he resembles Abraham Lincoln, are my favorite artifacts in the church. The best reason to join society is to keep this tradition alive for the next generation. As I found how valuable that pioneering experience was for me as a child, I felt an obligation to help to keep it alive for my own children someday”.

The Granary Step on up to the new stairs and porch to enter the Granary. Volunteers just recently completed the once crumbling steps into a steady and safe entrance. Julie Aamot and her helpers have decorated the best-looking old tool shed that ever existed. The Granary was built by John Gischer in 1887 on Marine Drive in Birch Bay. Gischer was one of the earliest settlers of the Birch Bay area. It was moved to Pioneer Park in the 1970s. Check out the many farming and logging artifacts that have been used over the years in our local area!

Olde Fashioned Christmas 2023

The Shields House For many years, Louise and Ken Sager have been in charge of the decorations and other activities happening in the Shields House. This year you’ll be welcomed inside by costumed hosts, and to the smell of apples cooking for those ever famous “mini apple pies”. A snowball theme tree and a collection of Nutcrackers from the Buckland family welcome you into the living room. The master bedroom is showcasing “A Holly Dolly Party” while the bears in the bathroom are wishing everyone to have a “Beary Merry Christmas”. Margaret Coulombe, a recent member into the society, is now taking on a large part of the preparations in the Shields House and also many other volunteering opportunities. Margaret has always loved the pioneer life and still wishes she had been born in the 1800’s. When she moved to Ferndale in 2017 and found out about Pioneer Park, she knew she wanted to be a part of it. Her favorite event is the Old Settler’s Picnic where she loves dressing in period clothing and meeting others in the community. While helping one day, she finally found out what the cool little hook tool that she’d had for years was: a shoe-button puller. There are several on display in the Shields House. If you love the pioneer life like Margaret does, you should join Ferndale Heritage Society and share in the fun. Shields House was built on the Old Guide Road south of Wiser Lake in 1885. It was the second building moved to Pioneer Park in 1950 by the Whatcom Old Settlers Association. The two-story Shields House is a monument to craftsmanship of the early pioneers and specifically to Conrad Shields, who constructed the house.

Foster House Choo! Choo! What would a Christmas visit to Pioneer Village be without Larry Hanson's train collection? Lead hosts Tom and Sue Brand, along with new members Mark and Louann Peery, have the Foster House decorated with garlands, lights and snowmen. For your viewing pleasure, check out the new TV photo display up in the corner showing pictures of Olde Fashioned Christmases of the past 30 years. Mark and Louann moved to Ferndale in January of 2022. They went on the Lighted Christmas stroll and got invited to join the Heritage society. “We thought joining the Ferndale Heritage Society would be a good way to meet people and participate in Community events”. This is their first Olde Fashioned Christmas to see behind the scenes and help with the preparation. Mark is planning to help set up some Christmas lights and get the train ready for display. Both plan on attending the work sessions to make the grounds and cabins ready for Christmas visitors. “We would encourage anyone to join the Heritage Society. There is something for everyone. If you like to dress as a pioneer, come join the fun. It’s fun to learn new skills, make new friends and learn more about the history of Ferndale”.

Parker House - General Store Christmas spirit is bustling at the Parker House General Store! The store offers you the perfect present or maybe you’ll find that unique collectible for someone special. Come inside and feel the spirit of Christmas that isn’t your typical commercial mayhem found in the mall. Olde fashioned store clerks, like Cora Jackson, are on hand to help you make the perfect selection of unique gifts for children of all ages who call this their favorite time of year. Stocked on the shelves are exciting gifts for everyone such as Olde English Crackers and Pioneer Village souvenirs. All proceeds from store sales go back to fund park projects and ongoing maintenance. Cora Jackson joined the Ferndale Heritage Society last year as a newcomer to Whatcom County after being invited by John and Valerie Gaetz to participate in the 2022 Old Settler’s Picnic Parade. She found in the FHS a diverse group of people who were welcoming, fun and full of local historical knowledge. She enjoys attending our meetings, especially when Fred Sutcliffe tells his stories of how these cabins were relocated to Pioneer Park. Cora has been a tremendous help in the Parker House Store, helping to move merchandise for different events, but this past spring— Everything, Shelves and All, had to be moved out and then back in while the cabin was rechinked. What a lot of work! When you visit the Parker House Store this December, make sure to see how lovely it looks now.

The Pharmacy) Due to space, and stair congestion, the Pharmacy upstairs in the Parker house won’t be open during the Olde Fashioned Christmas event. The Pharmacy is open during the summer tour season.

Rogers House, Veteran’s Museum Van Buren Cabin First National Bank of Ferndale Dan and Pam Williams have recently taken over the leadership of the Van Buren cabin. Dan recently hung and repositioned the old original teller window to allow visitors to get the feel of coming up to the counter and being served. Fun banking activities happen here as you're greeted by these “tellers”. “We haven’t had an old-fashioned robbery here yet, but the Sheriff is always nearby”. Pam is a summer season tour guide that really loves history, and she received glowing reviews from many visitors to the park this summer. Pam and Dan have only been society members for a short time, but we truly appreciate their volunteering involvement. The Van Buren cabin was built in 1879 and located on Van Buren Road, three miles north of Everson on the Milwaukee railroad. In 1891 it began its life as a post office, serving until 1918. When the Van Buren cabin came to Pioneer Village it became the "First National Bank of Ferndale". Check out the variety of early banking artifacts on display. The prize item is a "cannon ball" safe from the old Custer State Bank. The combination has been lost, but a stethoscope will be available for anyone wishing to take a "crack" at it. Fully one half of any gold found inside will go to the person who can work the combination! (Or one genuine $American$ dollar bill, whichever is greater in value.) Good luck!

Men and women of the Ferndale Legion under the leadership of Robert Lyles and Nancy Knapp maintain, upgrade displays, and host this noble cabin. This year’s theme is of an Old Pioneer contemplating the snow. Frieda Brester has been coming to care for the artifacts and volunteer in the Veteran’s Museum since 2007 in her role as member of the American Legion. When the Legion closed, Frieda wanted to continue her involvement, and she joined the Heritage Society in order to continue caring for the museum and its collections. Her favorite activity at the Village is the Old Settlers Picnic in summer. She enjoys sitting on the porch and greeting the visitors. She also enjoys the Olde Fashioned Christmas event, but says sitting out on the porch in the winter is a bit more challenging! Frieda loves all of the displays and information about military veterans in the cabin. She loves helping with the Christmas crafts that children can make. Frieda invites people to join the Ferndale Heritage Society so they can know all about the cabins and how they came about. The Rogers House, which was built in 1877 by A. A. Rogers, is home to the American Legion Veteran's Museum. It honors the men and women who have served and are currently serving in all branches of the military.

The Larson House How neat to see little frosty noses peering into the two windows of the Larson cabin. Fred and Kay once again have done a spectacular job of decorating the windows for visitors to enjoy. One window shows how sports minded our Ferndale community is. The other window has a lot of trinkets that spilled out of that olde fashioned trunk. One of the new and “young minded” members to recently join is Josh Andres. Josh hosted in the Larson cabin this summer, as well as the Lopas cabin. Josh was hired this past summer as an intern by the society to input data, scan photos and catalog artifacts. Josh joined FHS in the summer of 2022, right after Old Settlers Weekend, and right in time to help with Olde Fashioned Christmas! “I joined FHS because I wanted to have a more in depth knowledge of Ferndale's history, and being a member of FHS has helped me learn so much I wouldn't have learned otherwise. My favorite event to participate in is Olde Fashioned Christmas. With all the lights and holiday spirit it's a wonderful time. It also brings back memories of going to OFC as a little kid, and remembering how magical it was to walk through the park”. This year Josh is the point person for the Ice Fishing booth in the pavilion! Stop by and see what you can catch. The most meaningful display in the Larsen cabin is the plaque about Fred Sutcliffe. Fred has been a part of the Heritage society for decades and has helped move and renovate most of the cabins in the park. “The best reason to join Ferndale Heritage Society is to learn about local history, and to costume up! The dressing up part is a lot of fun”.

The Barr Barn Welcome to the Barr Barn for Olde Fashioned Christmas 2023! Be sure to come on in through the barn door even though it looks closed. Bring the kids inside to enjoy. Maybe give a pat on the nose to the two North American Spotted draft horses on display. Gail Nelson and helpers have the barn aglow with Christmas bling including a complete draft horse harness collection. Once again, the north lean-to photo booth will be set up for the annual Christmas picture of you, your family and your guests. The south side lean-to has the nativity scene.

Mountain View Schoolhouse Tucked in behind the Barr Barn is the Mountain View Schoolhouse. Bonnie Wiesen, along with daughter Rebecca Swanson, have decorated the inside with beautiful trees aglow. While visiting, peer into the school marm’s living quarters, and the school room filled with school desks. There are two allowable hands-on bookcases filled with children’s books they can look through. Take a turn using fabric to dress the wooden doll toys. The research library is in the process of being catalogued by Tasia Ross for future use. Also in the library is an extensive collection of Ferndale and other Whatcom County yearbooks. Check out the list, maybe you have one to donate that we are missing. Rebecca Swanson is our newest volunteer in the most recent addition to our Pioneer Village collection, the Mountain View Schoolhouse. Rebecca is Heritage Society member Bonnie Wiesen’s daughter and has helped Bonnie over the years in the Holeman House and at our special events. Bonnie tells the story of how Rebecca, as a member of the 4-H Club, was a “Friend” of the Mountain View Library when it was in its original location. She and club members cleaned up and helped rebuild and repaint the red building after an arson fire many years ago. The 4-H members would bring their steers to the library to practice walking before they were entered into the 4-H shows! Rebecca now enjoys coming to help her mother decorate and undecorate for the Christmas events and likes to sit in the building and greet visitors. Built in 1916 as a teacher’s cottage on the West Mountain View School campus, the building was located at Lake Terrell and Douglas Road in Ferndale. It later became a classroom to house additional students. In 1945, the building became a library and community meeting center. Intalco took charge in 1989, moving the schoolhouse to their property to protect it. Pioneer Village acquired the building in 2017 and relocated it to Pioneer Village.

Pioneer Park’s Outhouse Stop by the Outhouse, oh wait, there’s someone in there… Is that Jedidiah and what is he saying? Peek inside for a look at restroom facilities in pioneer times. You will really appreciate today's indoor plumbing! Back in pioneer days, people collected their old Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogs for use in the outhouse! Every Pioneer homestead had one of these critical and necessary buildings in its day.

The Jenni House The majestic Jenni House is a true example of what this hospitable house was like in the late 1800’s. Today, Baerbel Marquart, along with Marie Honrud and Cassie Newman, have decorated with lots of crafted snowmen. Baerbel hand crocheted the snowman ornaments on the living room tree. The kitchen has the scents and smells of Christmas time baking. Cassie Newman has been unofficially volunteering since the age of four when she began to come to the Jenni House with her grandmother, Baerbel Marquart. Cassie says Pioneer Village has been a huge part of her growing up. She enjoys helping her grandmother decorate and undecorate the cabin, especially the Christmas tree, and making cookies while visiting with children. She loves all the artifacts in the Jenni House, but especially loves the hand pump vacuum and the solid oak table. “You should join the Heritage Society if you love history and learning about early Whatcom County families”. Jenni House was built in 1873 near Laurel on the old Northwest Diagonal Road. The house was used as a stagecoach stop where travelers could refresh themselves with a meal or an overnight stay. At one time a community dance hall was located on the second floor.

Olde Fashioned Christmas 2023

Lopas House, the Print Shop This cabin has recently been renovated, upgraded and made more visitor-friendly by a group of volunteers. James Burgess, along with Zack Wopat, Dick Mills and Ben Brown, volunteered many hours to make that happen. The displays now show the ways a working print shop would have printed many years ago. Check out that Christmas tree that must have had been dipped in black ink. Zack Wopat joined the Ferndale Heritage Society in 2017. He had just moved to Ferndale and was looking for fun activities. He met Dick Mills who needed help cleaning and renovating the Lopas House, which quickly became Zack’s favorite cabin. He loves all the pictures on the walls that portray the cabin in its different stages and locations, but his favorite artifact is the paper cutter. He loves hearing our young guests crack up when he tells them its name: The Guillotine. Be careful, Zack! Lopas House was built in 1879 by Edwin Lopas, a former stove molder from Illinois. In 1990, Intalco donated the cabin to Pioneer Park where it now displays a full array of Printing Industry memorabilia to include the "Linotype" Model 1914 typesetting machine.

Barrett Post Office Don't forget to visit the Barrett House or the old Trudder Post Office. Kids can bring the letters they wrote to Santa to mail in the special Santa mailbox. Besides lots of Postal Memorabilia, there will be a display of snowflakes and snowmen. Linda Cline is the lead in this cabin with help from Jim and hosts like Jerilyn. They’re looking forward to seeing you all! Jerilyn Pomeroy-Peterson joined the Ferndale Heritage Society in the spring of 2022. She remembered visiting the cabins previously with family and decided it would be a great place to volunteer. Now she is currently the society’s “Sunshine Lady” who mails out cards depending on the occasion. Her favorite event is Old Settler’s Picnic where she enjoys sharing local history with the guests who come through the cabins. In the Barrett House, she shows them her favorite display: a collection of original rubber postal stamps of long ago. She is looking forward to learning more about the horse-drawn mail wagon in the Post Office. Jerilyn has a degree in fashion design, so she also enjoys participating in the vintage fashion shows sponsored by the society.

The Holeman House - School House Oh, the weather outside may be frightful, but inside the Holeman school house it’s delightful! All the Christmas decorations along with school days memorabilia are on display for your enjoyment. Juanita Coolidge recently accepted the responsibility of cabin lead for the Holeman cabin. The Society is very grateful for her to do that as she is an amazing volunteer. When Juanita, a retired teacher, moved to Ferndale, her daughter Connie suggested that she check out the Heritage Society as a way to meet new people in the community. After visiting the village, Juanita really liked the cozy log cabins and the hosts. Playing the role of Gramma Jenni during the spring education program is Juanita’s favorite activity with the society. Baking bread with the visiting students is a “roll” that Juanita has truly enjoys. “The Pioneer Village is the focal point of the Ferndale community and a great opportunity to be involved…and it’s fun!” Hosts invite the children to sit at an old school desk, write a letter to Santa Claus at the North Pole to be mailed in the Barrett Post Office special mailbox, for delivery to Santa. Children 12 and under will receive a letter from Santa. Santa and his helpers work hard to see that all letters are answered in time for Christmas. Don’t forget to write your full name and complete mailing address NEATLY and CLEARLY on your letter so that Santa will know exactly where to send his letter back to you. While in the schoolhouse, be sure to ask the Schoolmarm or her assistants to tell you all about going to school in a one-room schoolhouse in pioneer days. It was a very different experience for both pupils and their teachers!

Pioneer Pavilion It might be damp and chilly outside, but here in the Pavilion it’s warm and friendly. Enjoy the hot coffee or cocoa which have all been donated by our local WECU (Whatcom Education Credit Union). Marie and her helpers are serving delicious cookies donated by local businesses. The display boards and tabletop notices let you see who has donated to Olde Fashioned Christmas. Be sure to thank those businesses next time you visit them. Without their help and hundreds of volunteer hours this event wouldn’t happen. The Pavilion is where children can make a holiday craft, do some ice fishing and all ages can be entertained by local musicians and high school students that donate their time and talents to add to our holiday spirit. Check out our Gingerbread People decorations and the beautiful Christmas tree. Your last stop in the pavilion will be to visit with that special guest dressed in red. Santa will be taking your special gift requests and is available to pose for quick pictures. We hope you enjoy Olde Fashioned Christmas as much as we enjoy putting it on. And if you’ve ever thought you might like to help with this wonderful family-friendly event, please let us know.

Gingerbread Cookie Bars

Ingredients: 8-1/2 cup popped popcorn ¾ cup packed brown sugar 6 TBS butter 3 TBS corn syrup ¼ tsp salt 1 cup mixed nuts or peanuts Instructions: Mix everything except popcorn and nuts in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook for five minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and pour over popcorn that is in an oven proof pan (I use my roaster pan). Stir and coat quickly. Bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Add nuts into popcorn and stir. Return to oven for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and spread out on foil to cool. Break apart when cool and store in an airtight container or in Ziplock bags.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup plus 3 TBS butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup dark brown sugar 1 tsp plus ¼ tsp vanilla extract 1/3 cup molasses • 1 large egg 2 cup all purpose flour • 2 tsp baking soda 1 TBS ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp ground cloves 1/2 tsp salt • 6 oz. cream cheese 2-1/4 c. powdered sugar

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x13 inch pan with non-stick cooking spray. Set the pan aside. Whisk together the dry ingredients and set aside. In another bowl, cream together ½ cup butter, sugars, vanilla and molasses for about one minute. Mix in the egg, then mix in the dry ingredients, until combined. Spread the dough evenly into the pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes. While the cookie bars are cooling, make the cream cheese frosting by first beating the cream cheese and 3 TBS butter together. Then mix in the powdered sugar and ¼ tsp vanilla and beat for another minute or two. Spread the frosting over the bars, after they have cooled completely. Garnish with holiday colored sprinkles, cut into squares and ENJOY! -Submitted by Linda Harkleroad
