Lynden Family Physical Therapy My sister has been diagnosed by her physician with fibromyalgia. She complains of pain and aching throughout her muscles. She also has difficulty sleeping. What is fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that is characterized by widespread muscular aching and burning through the body. Some patients relate that they feel as if they have the flu all the time. This syndrome is also associated with other disorders, which include chronic fatigue, sleep disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic headache, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), and sensitivity to the environment, such as odors, noise, and bright lights, among other symptoms. Fibromyalgia typically occurs among women of middle age, but it also occurs in men and in other age groups. There are many theories as to the cause of fibromyalgia, but no definitive answer as of yet.

2

However, fibromyalgia is a self-limiting condition, meaning that it is not a terminal illness but a cluster of symptoms that require daily management to allow the individual to function as normally as possible. Some of the current treatments include physical therapy, improving deep-level sleep that is so crucial for body functions, trial of different medication schemes, stress management techniques, relaxation techniques, therapeutic massage, and a consistent exercise program. It is possible to manage fibromyalgia symptoms with a comprehensive treatment plan so the patient can return to normal daily activities.

Gentle Acupuncture If I’m scared of needles, can I still be treated with Oriental Medicine? If you are terrified of needles, but you’re tired of suffering and want to try Oriental Medicine, you can be treated without needles. Tui Na is “massage-style” technique. Cupping and GuaSha involve cutaneous stimulation to increase blood flow. And there is Herbal medicine. These applications treat a variety of health issues. What is Facial Rejuvenation or Cosmetic Acupuncture? Using acupuncture needles or other tools you can look refreshed or years younger. Theory maintains that as we age, we have less qi (energy) in our bodies causing skin to wrinkle and sag. Treatments can boost qi and blood circulation, increase collagen, tone skin & diminish fine lines.

My physician has ordered a MRI for what he believes is a rotator cuff injury. What is the rotator cuff? The rotator cuff refers to the network of 4 muscles that originate on the shoulder blade (scapula) and attach to the upper arm bone (humerus). The tendons of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis muscles form a “cuff” at the shoulder joint that provides stability and allows for arm movement. Injuries to any of these muscles can cause pain, and limit arm movement. How long will I have to go to physical therapy to recover from injury? For most injuries, the goal of PT is to first help control pain and inflammation, then to develop a progressive program to regain range of motion and strength. There are several variables that affect rehab, including the extent of your injury and if surgery was necessary, your general health and activity level, and ultimately your participation in a home exercise program as directed by your physical therapist. Your PT will discuss the guidelines for your participation situation with you.

Asthma & Allergy Center of Whatcom County Why would my antihistamine work for me last year, but now does not seem to be very effective for my allergies?

I am tired of suffering from allergies during the best time of year to enjoy outdoor activities. What can I do to improve my quality of life?

Antihistamines are an important part of successful control of seasonal allergies but they do not reduce inflammation in the nasal mucous membrane, which may be worse for you this year. Therefore, for optimal control of allergies, many patients need to use a prescription antiinflammatory nasal spray, in addition to an antihistamine.

Moderate to severe seasonal allergies can affect a person from spring to late summer. With the many options available to control allergies, including prescription and over the counter medications, most individuals can be treated successfully. For those who have tried multiple medications and still have symptoms, allergy shots, or immunotherapy is a good option.

PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center Construction on the new PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Cancer Center is scheduled to be complete in December. This new facility will bring the excellent cancer care services, currently provided at different PeaceHealth locations, under one roof for the first time. Why is it so important to combine cancer services into a single location? An integrated Cancer Center is about providing the best possible experience and healthcare for those who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis, treatment for their cancer, and life beyond their illness. In an integrated center, all services are provided collaboratively and in the same location. Those undergoing cancer treatment commonly suffer from fatigue, making it difficult to travel between different locations. Currently, PeaceHealth provides excellent cancer treatment at several locations - Main Campus, Cordata South Campus and in a building two blocks east of Main Campus. The new integrated Cancer Center will make it convenient for patients to receive the latest cancer care developments in one location, including: • Board-certified physicians in medical oncology and radiation oncology • Comprehensive, interdisciplinary care, from diagnosis through recovery • Oncology-certified nurses administer chemotherapy • State-of-the-art technology for radiation therapy

• Survivorship resource center for education and support during and after treatment • Nurse Navigator program to guide patients with complex treatments • Nature-oriented setting and a tranquil, healing environment • One-stop registration and appointment scheduling • National and regional cancer research studies available to support patient care The new integrated Cancer Center will continue to provide a multidisciplinary approach to care, which will be enhanced by providing doctors and caregivers with a common space to collaborate. That means treating the “whole person,” not just the part of the body afflicted with cancer. It also means helping each person

navigate between diagnosis and treatment, learn about their illness and care options, and plan for treatment and recovery. Within the new Cancer Center, communication with and between care providers will be enhanced, family members will be welcomed, and space will be utilized to ensure that patients are comfortable and can experience a peaceful, relaxing setting. Shouldn’t I go to Seattle in order to receive the best cancer care? No, the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center already produces survival rates as much as ten percent better than national average for the four top cancers (lung, breast, colorectal and prostate). Upon completion

of the new Center, the already outstanding survival rates will be enhanced by their ability to offer comprehensive cancer care in a single facility. Those with cancer are seen by highly skilled and caring PeaceHealth providers and offered a full range of advanced medical treatments, along with support services and educational programs to enhance overall well-being and health. By meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each person, a more focused and comfortable journey through cancer treatment is created. But, creating a place of healing and hope is more than building a state-of-the-art Cancer Center; it means finding the right person to lead. PeaceHealth recently welcomed Jennie

No, PeaceHealth patients will continue to receive the most advanced treatment technology provided by highly skilled and caring providers for no additional cost. The Cancer Center will also continue to provide several free educational programs and support groups as they always have.

PeaceHealth provides our community with access to an unparalleled care experience and treatment outcomes that meet or exceed national norms, close to home.

PeaceHealth’s vision for a new, comprehensive Cancer Center is made possible because of the generous gifts from the community. Donations of all sizes make all the difference. You can make a secure donation by visiting www.peacehealth.org/whatcom/foundation or by calling (360) 788-6866.

What You Need To Know About Taking Aspirin To Lower Your Risk of Heart Attack If you are at risk for a heart attack, taking aspirin every day or every other day can lower your risk.

How Do I Know if I Am At Higher Risk for A Heart Attack? You may be at higher risk for a heart

attack if you can say yes to any of the following: • I am a man over 40. • I am a woman past menopause. • I smoke. • I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. If you answered “Yes” to any of these, talk to your doctor or nurse about whether taking aspirin is right for you.

Is Aspirin Safe?

For most people, taking aspirin is safe. But for some people, aspirin can increase the chance of bleeding in the stomach or intestines and may cause a small increase in some kinds of stroke. For that reason, taking aspirin is not the right choice for everyone. The higher your risk of heart disease, the more you have to gain by taking aspirin.

What Should I Do?

Ask your doctor or nurse about taking aspirin. They can help you decide: • Whether to take aspirin. • What kind to take. • How much to take. • How often to take it.

Rehabilitation Medicine

What are the treatments for Tennis Elbow? It is also known as lateral epicondylitis caused by repetitive microtrauma to the extensor tendons. It can be seen in non-tennis players who engage in repetitive activities such as hand grasping and scooping ice cream. Initial treatment may include antiinflammatory drugs, exercises and corticosteroid injections. Platelet-Rich Plasma injection to the elbow is another new treatment for those with chronic pain and limited functions.

A Pain Specialist Comes to Lynden Jimmy Cui, M.D., Ph.D. Board Certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, specializes in non-surgical care for spine pain, sports and work-related musculoskeletal injuries.

What is Spinal Stenosis? Spinal Stenosis is the result of narrowing of the spinal canal, caused by herniated disc, facet joint arthritis, and spine degeneration. The patient will complain of leg pain with walking or standing. The pain will disappear if the patient flexes the lumbar spine or assumes the sitting position. MRI is highly accurate to evaluate this condition. It can be successfully managed non-surgically with a multimodality approach.

Health Care Guide - June 2012

Essential Health Tips

1. Move More Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it’s a stress buster. Think ‘move’ in small increments of time. It doesn’t have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that’s great when you’re up to it. Meanwhile, move more. Thought for the day: Cha, Cha, Cha…. Then do it! 2. Cut Fat Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise. Thought for the day: Lean, mean, fat-burning machine…. Then be one! 3. Quit Smoking The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we’ve seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Warn your children of the false romance or ‘tough guy’ stance of Hollywood smokers. 12

4. Floss Your Teeth Recent studies make a direct connection between longevity and teeth flossing. Nobody knows exactly why. Perhaps it’s because people who floss tend to be more health conscious than people who don’t? Thought for the day: Floss and be your body’s boss.

5. Reduce Stress Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e., soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.

Health Care Guide - June 2012

6. Protect Yourself from Pollution If you can’t live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It’s a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent. Thought for the day: ‘Smoke gets in your eyes’…and your mouth, and your nose and your lungs as do pollutants….hum the tune daily. 9. Keep a Positive Mental Outlook There’s a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can’t be unhappy when you’re smiling or singing.

7. Wear Your Seat Belt Statistics show that seat belts add to longevity and help alleviate potential injuries in car crashes. Thought for the day: Buckle down and buckle up. 8. Avoid Excessive Drinking While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. Thought for the day: A jug of wine should last a long time.

Lynden Tribune & Ferndale Record

10. Choose Your Parents Well The link between genetics and health is a powerful one. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn’t mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Thought for the day: Follow these basic tips for healthy living and you can better control your own destiny.

Lamphere Insurance, Financial and Estate Planning Concern 1: Who will take care of me when I can no longer care for myself?

Concern 2: What is a realistic length of time that people need Long-Term Care benefits?

Response: With our longer life expectancies, we are now experiencing a new kind of health crisis in our country: a sharply increased need for help with physical and mental health care on an ongoing basis. Unless you’ve experienced this within your own family, this issue may seem unreal to you. Those who invest in their future care provide a great gift to themselves and to those who will have responsibility for caring for them.

Response: The REALITY is that the average duration of care is 3.5 years. Planning ahead provides alternatives which allow you to keep full control of your health care needs while simultaneously protecting your assets. With the ratio of taxpayers to each person on Medicaid today equaling 2-to-1 (Kaiser 4/11), it is very risky to trust that Medicaid services will be available when you need them.

Visiting Angels My parents are at the point of needing help in their home. This is new and uncharted territory for us. How do you go about finding caregivers to work with people like my parents? We know that this is a difficult decision to make.  We approach this as if it were our home and our parents.  In our hiring process we first look for caregivers that have the compassion and skill to do the job. They must have the heart to care like family and the knowledge and ability to give the care. Secondly, caregivers must be dependable. Their dependability has a domino effect, they must show up and be on time! Life has enough challenges without you having to worry about help that doesn’t arrive on time. Finally, a caregiver must be trustworthy. Having someone new in your home can be scary.

That all sounds great. But how do you assure that this is true about your caregivers? At Visiting Angels we not only value these things, we actually test for them. We are the only ones in our area to use a nationally recognized Caregiver Assessment tool that measures for a caregiver’s ability to work well one-on-one, and measures their character for reliability and trustworthiness. And for your peace of mind, we assign a specific Case Manager to meet with you and your family, to get to know them, and the client’s needs. That same Case Manager introduces our caregivers to you on the first visit, as well as monitors the ongoing care.

“We measure our success by the lives we touch.” • On call 24/7 • Personalized case-by-case care • You choose your care giver • All levels of care • 1 to 24 hours of care • Comprehensive Caregiver Screening and Testing

Health Care Guide - June 2012

SUMMER HEALTH:

Stop Frequent Heartburn (ARA) - Summer is here, which means it’s time to pack your bags for vacation, dust off your beach umbrella and fire up the grill. Unfortunately many people will not only feel the summer heat outside with friends, but also inside their chest. Summer is prime time for heartburn. Barbecue season is the time of the year when people experience frequent heartburn symptoms the most, according to a recent survey by Wakefield Research for P&G, which brings you Prilosec OTC(R). The survey revealed that many frequent heartburn sufferers - those who experience heartburn two or more days per week - are not treating symptoms as effectively as possible, and there is a general lack of understanding about heartburn and available treatments. One of the top misconceptions is that all over-thecounter (OTC) heartburn treatments are the same. Although frequent heartburn symptoms can be reduced with antacids or H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors are indicated specifically for frequent heartburn. There are important differences among the available therapies: • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) treat frequent heartburn by shutting down many of the acid pumps in the stomach and stopping symptoms before they start. Effects can last 24 hours. • Histamine2 (H2) blockers partially block production of acid in the stomach. The effect of H2 blockers generally lasts six to 12 hours. • Antacids neutralize existing stomach acid and provide relatively rapid but short-term relief of heartburn symptoms lasting one to three hours. Two myths many believe are that drinking milk can help relieve symptoms and that weight gain has no impact on frequent heartburn. In actuality, a glass of milk increases one’s acid production (like any food) and maintaining a healthy weight is one key to treating heartburn.

“One way to treat frequent heartburn is to take a medication that can help block the acid that causes heartburn, so you don’t get it in the first place,” Dr. Sachar observed. “It’s possible that, while taking just one pill a day as directed, a 14-day course of Prilosec OTC can control, and in many cases, eliminate frequent heartburn symptoms. Prilosec OTC may take one to four days for full effect and should not be taken for more than 14 days or more often than every four months unless directed by a doctor. It is not intended for immediate relief.” People can take measures to avoid heartburn symptoms this summer. Dr. Sachar offers the following tips for those suffering from frequent heartburn: • Get educated. One of the best defenses is to arm yourself with information. With all the over-thecounter medications available, my patients are often overwhelmed and don’t know what is right for them. Additionally, people often fall prey to the common myth that experiencing symptoms daily is normal, without realizing there are treatments available. The more you know about frequent heartburn, the better you will be able to treat it. • Talk to your doctor about the right treatment for you. Dr. Sachar recommends over-the-counter PPIs, like Prilosec OTC because it’s possible with just one pill a day to block the acid and stop heartburn before it starts for a full 24 hours of zero heartburn. It’s possible while taking Prilosec OTC. Use as directed for 14 days to treat frequent heartburn. Do not take for more than 14 days or more often than every four months unless directed by a doctor. Not for immediate relief. • Quit smoking. Smoking relaxes the valve at the top of your stomach, allowing excess stomach acid to reflux into your esophagus. Mt. Baker Vision Clinic When should my child have their first eye exam? Most professional eye organizations recommend a child have their first eye exam by five years old. However, if you suspect a problem with your child’s eyes, exams can be done at any age, including soon after birth. Should my children wear sunglasses? Experts say 50 percent of our lifetime exposure to UV rays may occur by age 18. Given that cumulative UV damage to eyes cause diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration later in life, make sure your kids eyes are protected from the sun with good quality glasses.

Vision Plus Cataracts 101 You’ve heard the word cataracts, and you know it has something to do with vision. Here’s a quick primer on the effects, risk factors and symptoms of cataracts. The word cataract means waterfall, and refers to a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye, obstructing the movement of light into the eye. Typically both eyes are affected – one usually before the other. Cataracts are usually related to aging and are very common in individuals age 60 and older. But other types of cataract do exist, including • Secondary: cataracts forming after surgery for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma, or in individuals who have diabetes • Traumatic: cataracts developing after an eye injury – even years later. • Radiation: cataracts that develop after exposure to some types of radiation

The progress of cataracts is slow but steady, resulting in loss of vision that is painless but can cause blindness if untreated. Contours, shadows and color vision become less vivid and glare sensitivity is increased. Diseases such as diabetes and personal behavior like smoking and alcohol consumption can increase the likelihood of developing cataracts. Other factors include exposure to sunlight, particularly ultraviolet B rays, a deficit of some vitamins and antioxidants and taking certain medications. Cataracts can be quickly and easily removed with an hour-long surgery (one hour per eye) under local anesthetic. In the course of the surgery, your old, blurry lens is replaced with a new, clear, plastic lens. This process dramatically improves vision in over 90% of people.

Health Care Guide - June 2012

Hearing Northwest What is a hearing evaluation and when/why should I get one? Hearing tests are designed to identify all degrees of hearing loss. After gathering a health history, the hearing specialist will conduct an ear exam with an otoscope to check for obstructions, infections or other medical conditions that might affect hearing. If there is no medical reason for hearing loss, the hearing specialist will perform a series of tests, including an audiogram, to determine if a hearing problem is present. If you find yourself misunderstanding speech in conversations, having difficulty hearing in noisy social settings, or unable to hear on the phone, you may want to consider getting a hearing exam. Additionally, if you have a history of noise exposure (listening to loud music, working in a noisy setting, hunting, shooting, etc) you may have damaged your hearing.

Tracey Demmon, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology

Patricia J. Burns B.A, NBC-H.I.S, Owner

It is important to monitor your hearing levels and identify any signs of hearing loss in order to maintain overall health and prevent further hearing loss. What can you do about it/what are the benefits of hearing aids? Often times, people with hearing loss wait years to take action, in fact only 1 out of 5 people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wear one. But, hearing aids can improve the wearer’s quality of life and early amplification can improve their chance of using hearing aids successfully. The wearer can begin to participate in conversations again, interact with their loved ones, and become involved in community activities they may have previously avoided because of their difficulty hearing. Hearing aids come in a variety of sizes and styles designed to fit the needs of each individual and their hearing loss. Many of the styles are very cosmetically appealing and discreet and different technology levels allow the user to select an instrument that will fit their budget.

Hearing Health Clinic Do I need 2 hearing aids?

FACTS ON HEARING LOSS • 1 in 4 workers exposed to high levels of noise will develop a hearing loss • 3 in every 10 people over age 60 have a hearing loss • 1 in every 6 baby boomers (ages 4159) has a hearing loss. • 1 in every 14 Generation X’ers (29-40) already has a hearing loss.

Lynden Tribune & Ferndale Record

In the event that your hearing loss is diagnosed in both ears, two hearing aids will be recommended. Equal hearing sensitivity comes from the use of both ears. The ability to identify the direction of a sound source allows a person to react more appropriately to his/ her environment; this is accomplished by using both ears simultaneously. Your audiologist will make the proper recommendation. Will my hearing aid damage my hearing further? No. Your hearing aid will be programmed to a safe level. You may have to re-accustom yourself to loud sounds and noises in the environment. All sounds are amplified, although loud sounds are amplified to a lesser degree than softer sounds.

We’re worried about being able to afford skilled nursing care. How can we learn about funding options that may be available? Christian Health Care Center’s social services department helps residents and their families identify any programs that may be able to help pay for long term care, short term rehabilitation, medications, therapy services, and more. Many of the local and national organizations our staff works with, along with other senior healthrelated information, are listed on the Resources page of our website. Please visit chcclynden. org or call us to learn more about funding options for skilled nursing care.

Advanced Audiology, LLC Why do I “hear”, but I can’t “understand”? Often times with a hearing loss we will hear some sounds better than others. When we miss key words or sounds, our brain attempts to “fillin” the blanks, and sometimes we don’t quite get it at all. So simply amplifying all sounds doesn’t always work with hearing loss, we need to amplify specific frequencies. Call your Audiologist to schedule a hearing exam. Can’t I get just one hearing device? If both ears need amplification, then two devices are recommended. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. But, with two devices directionality is better noise management is better and overall understanding is better.

Emergency Numbers

When is my blood pressure too high? High blood pressure is a risk factor for strokes and heart attacks. For adults from 20 to 65 the top number (systolic) really should be below 135 mmHg. The bottom number (diastolic) should be under 85 mmHg. Can I lower my blood pressure without medicine? Lifestyle can influence blood pressures. Limiting salt in the diet, regular modest exercise and limiting the consumption of alcohol and caffeine can be helpful and should be tried. If blood pressures are repeatedly elevated, it is important to consult your health care provider regarding this risk factor.

Cascade Prosthetics & Orthotics Will I be able to return to my normal activities with my lower leg prosthesis? Yes. Depending on the level of amputation, most are able to resume their normal daily activities including driving. Some activities may require personal and equipment adaptations to perform them. Normal progression of walking is to use a walker, then transition to a cane, and finally without an assistive device. This varies with each patient. What types of shoes can I wear with my ankle foot (AFO) brace? Most styles of walking and athletic shoes can accommodate braces, as can many kinds of casual shoes. Snug fitting dress shoes usually are not able to be worn with braces. There are also specialty shoes known as depth shoes that can accommodate braces, and these are available in a variety of styles and colors.

Patient’s Testimonial on Mini Implants

Having a chronic life threatening gastro intestinal illness, I lost 65 pounds. My dentures no longer fit. I had a terrible time trying to eat, and to leave my house with no teeth was very humiliating.

When Eric was done with my dentures, I was happily amazed to see the change in my face. Where my cheeks were hollow, they filled out, and all of the sudden I had lips.

Then a series of events happened, and I was able to see a denturist. Choosing NW Dental and Denture was refreshing and empowering. The staff was friendly and professional. Dr. Henry led me through the process of the implants. The procedure and recovery time was fast and non-eventful.

When I first contacted NW Dental and Denture I weighed 97-98 pounds. Three weeks later I weighed 100 pounds. Thank you, NW Dental and Denture, each and every one of you. You gave me back my life!!!
