It’s been a nasty year Ferndale’s District 7 sets goal of 10 percent of for wildfires in the residents trained in CPR Northwest Early intervention is key Lack of rain, low humidity fueled the situation

to chances of surviving cardiac arrest

AccuWeather.com confirms what everyone in the Pacific Northwest has known for weeks: Dry weather continues to promote favorable conditions for wildfires. As of Wednesday morning, Sept. 26, there were 35 large uncontained fires raging across the U.S., with the bulk of them found in the Northwest. Specifically, Idaho and Washington have been adversely affected by the worst fires in many years. A lack of rainfall over the past month — only trace amounts in Spokane, Wash., and Pendleton, Ore. — created dry vegetation. Those arid conditions, combined with dry lightning strikes, ignited numerous fires throughout the region. The Mustang Complex fire in Idaho was one of the largest, having burned nearly 340,000 acres of land, and it was still only 25 percent contained on Sept. 26. Additionally, a stagnant weather pattern caused more problems than just fire damage. Light winds, little rainfall and excessive smoke caused air quality to become unhealthy for sensitive groups. As long as air quality is degraded, residents of smoky areas should take caution when exercising outdoors. Those with asthma or other breathing problems should be especially careful.

Fires finally being contained, but state extends burn ban Here’s a recap of the status of the major wildfires in Washington State: • As of Saturday, Sept. 29, the 15,643-acre Cascade Creek wildfire on the western flank of Mt. Adams was 55 percent contained, and crews were shifting toward mop-up. • The Wenatchee complex of fires was reported on Sept. 24 at 82 square miles and 30 percent contained, while the Table Mountain fire north of Ellensburg was reported at nearly 57 square miles in size and 10 percent contained. Those fires continued to creep on “some uncontained edges,” a spokesman said. Only a handful of structures were burned in these two fires. However, smoke continued to foul the air of many Eastern Washington communities. Cashmere schools were shut down for over a week. More than 2,500 firefighters battled the blazes. • The Taylor Bridge fire at Cle Elum was at its height around Aug. 13. The fire reached to approximately 26,500 acres (41 square miles) and destroyed more than 60 homes. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources said on Sept. 28 that weather conditions are still too dry to allow outdoor burning in general, but they have eased enough to allow industrial operations to resume in some areas of the state. For both sides of the Cascades, DNR has extended the statewide burn ban on all DNRprotected lands. The ban is now in effect through Oct. 7 on all forestlands in Washington except federal lands. “The conditions for new fires still exist, even as we head into October,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark. “Our firefighting resources are stretched to the limit, and our firefighters are exhausted. We cannot take the risk of new, human-caused fires with the tinder-dry conditions out there. We are taking the unprecedented step of extending the burn ban and asking everyone to be patient and vigilant until we see some rain.”

FERNDALE — During a cardiac event, every minute that goes by, the chance of survival drops 10 percent. That’s just one critical statistic that paramedics in Whatcom County Fire DisFire District 7 of Ferndale has used com- trict 7 often press home when promoting munity events like Old Settlers and the CPR training to the general public. Street Fair to promote CPR proficiency And the district is making it easier than ever to get the kind of training needed to with citizens. — Courtesy Photo save a life. Basic training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is conducted at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month at the district’s Church Road fire station. And although the American Heart Association issues a heart saver card to those who pay for the class, anyone can take the class for free, said Ferndale paramedic Jeff Sluys. Sluys and Tiffene Hansen are among the first fully certified paramedics within the district and they have a bag full of convincing arguments for why everyone should get some kind of training. For Sluys, it’s just a matter of having the confidence to intervene at all. Most people, he said, are hesitant to do anything beyond making the 911 call when faced with an emergency. Jerry Martin, Fire District 7 division chief of medical services, said the slim difference between dying of a heart attack and survival is dependent on the timely intervention of someone close to the patient at the critical moment. One telling incident occurred earlier this year in Birch Bay State Park and demonstrated the kind of response that can ideally make a difference. In that case, a group of college students happened upon an elderly woman in the midst of an emergency in the park restroom. The woman, who had probably been in cardiac arrest for about five minutes, benefited from about seven minutes of CPR from bystanders, extra critical since Birch Bay isn’t an area with fast response times. Unfortunately, the woman died several days later, since the cardiac arrest had been triggered by bleeding in her brain. But that doesn’t change the fact that the intervention saved her in that moment. Without the complications, she would likely have lived. Hansen said every response has to be treated as a “save” situation because there is no way of telling who is able to pull through and who is going to pass away despite someone’s best efforts. That perspective has been sharpened by the many situations she has witnessed in the last three years, along with Sluys. “There’s no typical save,” Hansen said. “I had a guy who was down for a while, but we got him up and he was okay. I had another person who was very young, but he didn’t make it.” Sluys said the district currently has a goal of training at least 10 percent of all residents within its coverage area. Increasing the chances of early intervention is critical since the district averages between 5 and 10 minutes just to drive to an emergency. So far, the district has given CPR training to over 200 people through its three-hour Saturday programs. Hansen said one of the keys to getting people interested in CPR training is to simplify it into its most important elements until people finally understand that anyone can do it. She noted, for example, that even untrained people shouldn’t hesitate to step in and do whatever they can to help someone in cardiac arrest. Without help, she said, the patient is already dead to start with. Sluys said 911 dispatchers will usually figure out whether callers are trained to do CPR. In addition, they utilize flashcards over the phone to help callers through CPR. Sluys said that, at the very least, these are some helpful beginner’s tips for emergency intervention: • First see if the patient is unconscious (call 911). • Check for breathing. If he/she is not breathing effectively, start giving compressions. Push hard and fast. • If they didn’t need compressions, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Push right in the center of the chest (the sternum). For more information, visit www.wcfd7.org/communityclasses.html. Email Mark Reimers at news@ferndalerecord.com.

JOIN US! Volunteer to be a Firefighter!

It’s very important that you take precautions when it comes to fire.Always practice these safety tips:

If your clothes catch fire . . . Safety Fire

Never play with matches or lighters Do not handle gasoline or other liquids that burn Be careful around stoves, heaters and open fires Do not cook unless an adult is present If smoke is around, stay low to the ground REMEMBER, if something catches on fire, get help. Call 9-1-1 Kids and adults should work together to form an emergency plan, including an escape route. Don’t forget to practice the plan.

STOP where you are. DROP to the ground ROLL over and over until the flames are out, covering your face and mouth with your hands
