Performances at 7:30 p.m. both nights; tickets are $12 if bought in advance    Approximately 230 cowboys are signed up for this year’s Lynden rodeo, said local coordinator Chris Paul.    Performances of the Lynden PRCA Rodeo on Aug. 26-27 start at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Washington Fair grandstand.    Rodeo events include bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping and barrel racing.    Advance tickets are available for $12 at www.lyndenrodeo.com, at the fair office at 1775 Front St., Lynden, or by calling 3547777. Tickets purchased the day of competition cost $14. Also available for $75 each are Silver Buckle VIP packages that include preferred parking, seats next to the bucking chutes, a catered meal and two drink tickets.    The Lynden PRCA Rodeo is part of the Columbia River Circuit of professional rodeos in which participating cowboys earn money and qualify toward the annual Wan-

Two 2010 world champions coming to Lynden rodeo Dean Gorsuch and Bobby Mote part of a highly ranked rodeo contestants list    Looking over the cowboy list for the 2011 Lynden PRCA Rodeo, coordinator Chris Paul has at least two big reasons to be excited.    Among the names are a pair of cowboys — Dean Gorsuch and Bobby Mote — who became world champions in their events at Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last year.    Actually, Lynden was a stop on the climb to the top in 2010 for Gorsuch. The 31-year-old from Gering, Neb., ended up in a four-way tie for first in steer wrestling on his August visit to Whatcom County. But he was riding a strong second half of the rodeo season, hanging in the national Top 15, to get to the finals in December.    Gorsuch is entered in steer wrestling again in Lynden.    Mote, 25, of Culver, Ore., didn’t have such a smooth ride last year either — what rodeo cowboy does? — as he was signed up for Lynden in bareback riding, but had to back out at the last minute. During the season, Mote sustained both neck and

pelvic injuries that limited him to just 33 rodeos. But he made the most of those opportunities, winning enough to qualify for the Wrangler NFR.    This year, Mote is competing in bareback riding in the Columbia River Circuit, but for Lynden he is only entered in team roping with partner Mike Beers.    On the Lynden 2011 bareback riding list, however, Chris Paul is happy to see Ryan Gray, Brian Bain, Steven Dent, Jason Havens and Royce Ford. All were ranked within the top 17 in early August in the PRCA World Standards.    Beyond Gorsuch, who has been coming to Lynden since 2008, the steer wrestlers this year include K.C. Jones, Sean Mulligan and Alex Robertson, all on the current national earnings list.    Brother Riley and Brady Minor, of Ellensburg, return in team roping currently around 12th place in the World Rankings. Other highly ranked ropers coming to Lynden are Jake Barnes and Walt Woodard, Derrick Begay and Cesar de la Cruz of Ari-

zona, Clay Tryan, Travis Graves and Cory Petska.    Bull riding, of course, brings two hot names from the 2011 circuit who happen to hail from Washington State. Shane Proctor, of Grand Coulee, is first in the world right now and Allen Helmuth, of Ellensburg, is ranked 11. (See separate story on them on pages C4-C5. Other names in the top 15 nationally are Cody Whitney and Stormy Wing.    Shane Proctor is also ranked second in all-around (two or more events).    In barrel racing, topping the list of 61 Lynden entrants are Brenda Mays and her horse Jethro, which won Barrel Racing 2010 Horse of the Year, and Lindsay Sears, third in earnings last year and known for her chic clothing style.    Last year’s rodeo drew 265 competitors to town, including 41 who advanced to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.    Email Calvin Bratt at editor@lyndentribune.com.

Sometimes they compete in one rodeo one day and travel many miles to compete in another rodeo in the next day or two, in their effort to maximize earnings and raise their overall ranking.    The rodeo’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink fundraising campaign will be highlighted on Friday. Contestants who wear pink shirts during competition that evening can earn extra prize money while raising awareness of breast cancer. Local rodeo volunteers will conduct fundraisers for the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center in Bellingham. The campaign raised $5,000 last year.    Ashley Sutherland of Custer is serving as this year’s Miss Lynden Rodeo.    There are 28 rodeos in the Columbia River Circuit, starting with Coulee City, Wash., back in May and ending with Othello, Wash., and Pendleton, Ore., on Sept. 17. Lynden’s rodeo is the 20th of the season.    The Columbia River Circuit finals are in Redmond, Ore. on Nov. 11-12.

Two of world’s top bull riders plan Lynden showings Shane Proctor will highlight the field on Friday, Allen Helmuth competing only on Saturday    Shane Proctor can wow a crowd, win some money and ride a bull. Those are all for sure. And Proctor plans to bring his top bull-riding ranking to Lynden for the second straight year.    The Washington native won’t be alone from the top-10 bull riding ranks either, as Allen Helmuth will climb on bulls too to the delight of the local fans.

Shane Proctor

Ranked first in the touring professional division of the Bull Riders Tour and also first among bull riders in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), Proctor has been turning heads in 2011.    Originally from Grand Coulee, Wash., and now living in Mooresville, N.C., Proctor said he’s looking forward to making his second straight trip to Lynden.    “The committee does a really good job with the rodeo and the dates line up right with Kennewick and Bremerton,” he told the Lynden Tribune. “Last year, I had a ton of fun. It was good and I am just enjoying the chance to come back.”    The 26-year-old got his amateur card for breakaway roping at age 12. He started saddle bronc riding as a sophomore at Lake Roosevelt High School in eastern Washington, and a year later he was bareback riding before taking up steer wres-

tling as a senior (he graduated in 2003). In college, he qualified for the national finals as a calf roper.    As an amateur, Proctor qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo three

times in bull riding and twice each in bareback riding and saddle bronc riding. Twice he qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo in 2004-05, finishing in the top 12 in all three roughstock events in 2005.    He joined the PRCA that same year and won his first professional rodeo in Arlee, Mont., in 2007.    In 2008, he won the Toughest Cowboy reality television competition, earning him $35,000 and a 36.5-acre parcel of land near Pueblo, Colo.    From there, the success has continued. After earning shy of $5,000 in 2007, about $14,000 in 2008 and about $7,000 in 2009, he took home over $52,000 last year and finished the 2010 world standings in 23rd place.    This year is an entirely different story, as he has won a total of over $189,000 and sits atop plenty of lists as the top bull rider around.    Already, he has won 12 events this year, but is looking for more.    “I’ve been on over 200 bulls this year and the more bulls I get on the better I do,” he said. “I am pushing myself to go do a lot of rodeos and make a run.”    Proctor said he can’t worry about the world rankings, the qualifying runs and the “big picture.” Instead, he sets little goals and tries to accomplish those one at

a time.    “If I worry about the big picture, I worry myself too much,” he said. “I try to keep to the little things.”    Sure, he still wants to show well in those big-picture events, such as the National Finals Rodeo and Extreme Bulls Finals, but really he knows he just needs to “go out and cover all my bulls,” a feat he hopes to accomplish again in Lynden.    Proctor was bested in bull riding last year in Lynden by winner Shawn Hogg.    Proctor will compete only Friday on this year, packing in the date with other rodeos across the state. But he’s more than happy to add Lynden into the mix, impressed with the way the committee runs the show.    “The atmosphere of the rodeo is fun there,” he said. “The committee treats us great. They had dinner for us last year and I had a lot of fun. There are always some good riders that attend.”    Bringing some of the bigger names together on the same dirt doesn’t so much spark rivalries as it does reunions, he said.    Having grown up in Washington, getting a chance to do a circuit in the Northwest appeals to Proctor. “I’ve got a lot of friends out that way,” he said. “It is always fun to run into friends and my family gets to attend and watch.”

As Proctor’s success with the bulls grew this year, he has had to scale back another rodeo love: bronc riding.    He started bronc riding earlier in the year as a way to incorporate another favorite event of his, but soon discovered he doesn’t have time to get on the horses like he wants to when concentrating on the bulls.    Plus, as Proctor said, “When you travel with bull riders, they don’t care for saddles in the car.”

Allen Helmuth

Visitors to the Saturday show in Lynden won’t be disappointed with the caliber of bull riding then either.    Ellensburg’s Allen Helmuth, planning a second-day appearance, currently sits at about 10th place on the PRCA world bull riding rankings with roughly $43,000 in prize money earned this year.    Helmuth, originally from Iowa, joined the PRCA in 2006 and now the 27-year-old eastern Washington resident has improved on his 2010 final ranking of 45th and 2010 prize money of nearly $26,000.    He won a pair of events in 2007 and earned over $7,000 before grabbing an event win and nearly $20,000 in prize money in 2008. In 2009, he had a pair of wins, but dropped from 65th in the rankings to 81st with $14,000 earned. Last year, he stepped it back up and this year his five event wins already have him rising in the rankings even more.    As with Proctor, the dates of the Lynden event line up nicely with the rest of the Northwest circuit for Helmuth, making the

Sutherland waited to compete for the crown

Lynden PRCA Rodeo an easy one to hit.    With well over 100 bulls ridden so far this year, Helmuth still wants to not think about this success too much. “I just do my job and let everything fall where it may,” he said.    Helmuth doesn’t dabble in other events, sticking with the bulls. But that keeps him plenty busy, as he will head back

Ashley Sutherland is a patient competitor.    Ever since the annual Miss Lynden Rodeo Queen Pageant’s inception in January 2009, when Bellingham’s Hilary Zender was crowned, Sutherland knew she wanted someday to earn the title.    Up until this year’s pageant, Sutherland was too young to enter. The Rodeo Queen must be 18 to 23 years old, so Sutherland played the waiting game. 2011, however, was her year.    Sutherland, who turned 19 just a week after earning the crown, ran uncontested in the pageant back in February. So the evening wasn’t as high stress as it could have been.    “Instead of having a pageant this year, we just had a coronation,” she said. “We just had our silent auction, dessert

social, and then it was announced. On the night of Feb. 5th, it was official that I had become the Rodeo Queen. I wish we would have had something like (a pageant).” A history with horses    Horses have been part of Sutherland’s life for as long as she can remember.    “In a picture that we have, I’m 2 or 3 (years old) and I’m already sitting on my dad’s horse by myself,” she said. “I’ve done everything from 4-H to FFA to trade shows to pretty much everything. I’ve definitely tried my hand at quite a few different disciplines.”    She seems to gain new horse expe-

Description of Rodeo Events    PRCA Rodeo today involves these eight events: Bareback Riding, Barrel Racing, Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Roping, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping and Tie-Down Roping. In addition, All-Around is a special prize for those cowboys who compete in more than one event.    Now in its seventh year, the Lynden PRCA Rodeo does not do Steer Roping competition.    Here is a description of what’s involved in each event:

Tie-Down Roping Goal: Speed in roping a calf and tying three of its legs together. Action: From the chute, calf gets a short head start. Cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin” string in his mouth. Once a loop is over the calf’s head, horse is trained to stop and pull the rope taut. Cowboy dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and finishes the leg-tying. Calf must stay tied for six seconds to make a qualifying run. Scoring: In seconds.

PRCA LYNDEN RODEO

Bareback Riding

Team Roping

Goal: Stay on bucking horse at least eight seconds, score points for technique.

Action: The team consists of a header and a heeler. Steer gets a head start out of the chute. Header throws first loop to catch steer’s head or horns and uses horse to pull rope taut. Heeler must catch steer’s hind legs with his own rope. When both ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, time is recorded.

Action: Sitting directly on horse, cowboy has only his own riggin’ to hang onto. Out of the chute, he must have his feet above the horse’s shoulders through its first move, then can spur it. Cowboy must keep one hand free at all times. Judging based on “exposure” to horse’s strength, spurring technique and horse’s bucking action.

Goal: Speed of two cowboys in roping a steer to the ground.

Scoring: In seconds.

Scoring: On scale of 100 points.

Saddle Bronc Steer Wrestling Riding Goal: Wrestle a running steer to the ground. Action: The contestant and a partner hazer, both mounted, start out on either side of chuted steer. In the chase, hazer controls steer’s direction. As the wrestler draws even, he dismounts in order to grasp the steer’s horns, dig his boot heels into the dirt to slow down the steer and then wrestle it onto its side. Clock stops when all four legs point in the same direction. Scoring: In seconds.

Goal: With specialized saddle, stay on buckin’ bronc at least eight seconds, score points for performance. Action: Saddle has no horn; cowboy’s only handhold is a six-foot braided rope. When gate opens, cowboy’s boots must be above the horse’s shoulders. After first jump, he can begin spurring. One hand must remain totally free of equipment, body or horse. Judges score on difficulty and control. Scoring: On scale of 100 points.

PRCA LYNDEN RODEO

C11

Bull Riding

Barrel Racing

Goal: Stay astride the bull for eight seconds, earn points.

Goal: Speed in completing a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena.

Action: In rodeo’s most dangerous event, the rider settles on the bull’s back in the chute. His braided rope is wrapped around the bull’s girth and looped into his hand for grip. During the ride, one hand must remain free. Judges consider the difficulty of the bull’s spinning, jumping and kicking, and the cowboy’s degree of control.

Action: Time begins when horse and rider cross the start line and ends when they come back across the same line. Runs are timed to the hundredth of a second. Although a part of most PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, barrel racing is administered separately through the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

Scoring: On scale of 100 points.

Scoring: In seconds.

Steer Roping

All-Around

Goal: Speed in roping a full-grown steer.

Many cowboys compete in more than one event at a rodeo. A special prize may be awarded to the top money-earner among all cowboys entered in more than one event. The All-Around Champion is a prestigious award.

Action: Similar to tie-down roping. Cowboy must catch the steer by first roping it around the horns. Then he tosses the rope over the steer’s right hip and rides to the left to bring the animal to the ground. With rope taut, cowboy dismounts and runs to the steer to tie any three of its legs, which must remain bound for at least six seconds. Scoring: In seconds.

Five rodeo stock contractors lined up for this year Top-bucking bulls, broncs are voted on each year by the cowboys that ride them    More sources of stock make for a more interesting rodeo.    So, with five contractors involved, the 2011 Lynden PRCA Rodeo should be extra interesting.    This year’s two-day show will use these four stock suppliers from eastern Washington: Big Bend and Flying 5 out of Ritzville and Corey & Lange and Flying Diamond out of Moses Lake. Also contributing is Bar C5 Ranch out of Alberta, Canada.    “We should have a great lineup of stock with these all working together,” said Chris Paul, Lynden rodeo coordinator.    Northern Cross from Omak, Wash., has been the single contractor for all six

Ballots go out every Sept. 1, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet each December.    “Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for years, fostering their animals’ growth and development until they are ready to be tested in the arena for the bucking instinct and physical abilities, which may make them champions in their own right.”    The drawing determining exactly which bronc or bull will be matched with which cowboy on Friday and Saturday took place on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

PRCA LYNDEN RODEO

Rodeo riders are still ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink’ Cancer awareness effort helps local patients, rewards cowboys who wear pink on Friday    LYNDEN — Finding someone tough enough to wear pink hasn’t been particularly hard since the idea was born to ask rodeo contestants to don the color for a good cause.    And Friday night at the Lynden PRCA Rodeo promises to be no different as cowboys’ earnings are boosted if they win events while wearing the color associated with breast cancer awareness.    The charity effort, which made its debut at a Las Vegas rodeo in 2004, has grown to include organizing committees for rodeos all over North America, said Cindy Witman, past chair of the Lynden Tough Enough to Wear Pink committee.    The local group, which is now chaired by Witman’s daughter, Megan Kalma, donates its proceeds to the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center fund, which is used to support cancer patient costs not covered by insurance.    Witman said the local group was begun in 2008, when she approached Jim Baron, general manager of the Northwest Washington Fair, about the idea. The project gained his support, allowing the group to promote the Lynden PRCA Rodeo and raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer.    The primary method for fundrais-

PRCA LYNDEN RODEO ing is through a partnership with Wrangler, the company that manufactures the pink western apparel used in the project. Proceeds from clothing sold through the program go to the local sponsoring organization.    Carol Brumet, spokeswoman for the cancer center, said she has been thrilled with the effort, since it is a very practical way of supporting cancer research. None of the money leaves the county, she said. Instead, local cancer-sufferers going through clinical trials will be able to continue treatments even if their insurance doesn’t cover something specific in their regimen.    Past years’ efforts have raised about $5,000 each, with a check presentation being made each fall.    Witman said volunteers often don’t know what to expect each year and only hope to match what was raised previously.    Local publicity efforts have been helped recently with the addition of a pink tractor from Jim Hale, owner of the local John Deere dealership, Washington Tractor.    Hale said the tractor is a classic that is effective because no one ever expects to see pink instead of green on a John Deere.    The tractor was first sold by Hale in the 1960s. But he reacquired it later when he purchased a ranch in Eastern Washington and discovered the tractor was there. He then sold it to a friend who was planning a wine label based on the idea of a pink tractor and the vintage

Lynden Tribune | Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 | Ferndale Record machine lost its green color.    When that enterprise didn’t get off the ground, the machine languished with no home.    “The last thing I wanted was a pink tractor,” Hale said.    But Hale eventually had his own personal connections with cancer and he realized that the tractor might have a completely new use. So he bought it back from his friend.    Last year was the first time Hale’s tractor made its appearance at the Lynden rodeo in order to promote the cancer campaign. It will be there this year as well.    Since then, the tractor has earned accolades as an innovative way of creating buzz for the cancer fight, Hale said.    Friday night is Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the Lynden event. Winners of any of the seven main events will get a $500 bonus if they do it while wearing pink, thanks to the generosity of local donors, Witman said.    In many cases, some of that money comes back to the charity through the goodwill of the winning contestants, Witman said.    Attendees at the rodeo will be presented with various ways of contributing to the effort, including through raffle ticket sales and apparel purchases.    For more information about Tough Enough to Wear Pink, visit the website at www.toughenoughtowearpink.com.    Email Mark Reimers at reporter@ lyndentribune.com.

Sutherland: Traveling ahead Continued from C6 a setting comparable to that of a job interview. Contestants will then be judged in a horsemanship competition, which includes carrying a flag, riding in a pattern and practicing their rodeo wave.    The pageant in the evening consists of the contestants answering questions in front of the audience and a biography speech, along with a dessert social and a silent auction.    Rodeo Queen application forms will be available at the Lynden PRCA Rodeo, and very soon on the LyndenRodeo. com website. Ramerman will host an informational meeting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Peoples Place on the fairgrounds. Anybody interested in participating in the pageant is welcome to attend.    Email Brent Lindquist at sports@lyndentribune.com.
