Note from the Editor

This issue is dedicated to Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) and Sophie Scholl (1921-1943) who were extremely brave women who risked their lives to fight against human rights injustices. They unselfishly and courageously put themselves in dangerous situations to help those who were enslaved, unjustly imprisoned, tortured, and faced life threatening situations daily.

Harriet Tubman, the "Moses of Her People," was born a slave on the East side of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, where she was mistreated. After she bravely escaped slavery in 1849, traveling at night through swamps, rivers and forests, following Polaris (the stationary "North Star" in the Big Dipper) and using "station stops" on the Underground Railroad (UGRR: a series of safe houses), she became a Conductor in the UGRR, making many dangerous trips to Maryland to free slaves and bring them to St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. In addition to being an abolitionist and a suffragist, Tubman was a Union Civil War scout, spy (very dangerous, as she would be hung if caught) and nurse. Tubman guided abolitionist Col. James Montgomery and his 2nd South Carolina Black Regiment up the Combahee River (in the area of Hilton Head, SC) on June 2, 1863. She became the first woman (black or white) to command an armed military raid. This tremendous and courageous effort resulted in the liberation of over 700 slaves. After the Civil War, Harriet Tubman spoke in favor of civil rights for both black and white women at women's rights conventions throughout the Northeastern U.S. Sophie Scholl, a student at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (University of Munich), was a member of the White Rose, a non-violent resistance group during World War II. As a young German adolescent, Scholl was required by the Nazi party to join the League of German Girls; however, her Jewish friends were forbidden to be part of the group due to the cruel, hostile Nazi regime. Scholl worked first as a kindergarten teacher, then as a nursery teacher as required by the National Labor Service. Once she finished her required time in the National Labor Service, she enrolled at the University of Munich in May 1942, to study biology and philosophy. Once she became a student at the University, Scholl joined her brother at the White Rose. The group bravely distributed six editions of the leaflets called Flugblätter der Weissen Rose, which encouraged German citizens to actively and non-violently oppose Nazi oppression. Unfortunately, Sophie and Hans were arrested on February 18, 1943, after they were caught distributing the 6th edition of the leaflets at the University of Munich. Four days after their arrest, a judge found them guilty of treason and sentenced them to be executed. 1-4 Harriet Tubman and Sophie Scholl were heroic women who displayed exceptional courage in the most difficult circumstances.
